NORTON — Norton County Community Foundation and Norton Area Chamber of Commerce recently announced the launch of&nbsp;Station 15: The Podcast for Life in Norton County, Kansas.Season One episodes will be released every Tuesday, starting June 1 through July 6.&nbsp; Station 15 Podcast highlights human interest stories from Norton County, Kansas. Host Tyus Henson and guests will re-think what it means to be rural and explore the spirit, culture, and people who call Norton County home. Each season will explore a central theme, all from a rural lens. Season One considers holistic health, and discusses questions such as:&nbsp;What does "mind, body, and soul" healthcare look like in a rural community? Are services even available to tend to all three?&nbsp;The podcast is available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and most podcast-hosting platforms. We have incredibly talented people in every industry and walk-of-life with more stories to tell. Norton Co. foundation, chamber announce 'Station 15' podcast

In the last three to five years now, there have been problems with chinch bugs coming out of mature wheat fields and feeding on the small grain sorghum and forage sorghum plants after wheat harvest.&nbsp; &nbsp;

The overwintered adults emerge in early spring and fly into small grains where they mate and produce the first generation. Most problems in milo or feed occur when large groups of the immature, wingless nymphs migrate from maturing wheat fields and invade adjacent sorghum or sorghum/sudan hay fields where they attempt to complete development. They typically do not infest the entire field but can take out several rows of milo next to the wheat. &nbsp;

Problems with this insect were historically confined to eastern and central Kansas, with damage beginning in May or June, but in recent years, chinch bugs have become more of a problem further west in the state.&nbsp;

Chinch bugs puncture vascular tissues to extract plant juices and secrete digestive enzymes that cause the breakdown of surrounding plant tissues. Feeding punctures also can allow pathogens to enter the plant.&nbsp; Consequently, damaged plants present a variety of symptoms including stunting, yellowing, wilting, and necrotic lesions. The effect nymphal feeding has on plants depends to a large degree on the size, health and nutritional status of the plants. Growth stage and water balance are critical because small or drought-stressed plants have less ability to tolerate or recover from chinch bug feeding damage.&nbsp;

Using seed treatments: clothianidin (Poncho), imidacloprid (numerous products) and thiamethoxam (Cruiser) at planting can potentially decrease chinch bug damage and may protect plants for up to 3 weeks, unless the migration is heavy. Growers can use follow-up sprays on border rows if protection wears off before the end of chinch bug migration.&nbsp;

Most often the damage is noticed only after several rows of sorghum or feed have been severely stunted or killed. Ideally treating promptly as migrations begin and before significant numbers of bugs enter the field and small plants are affected is best.

An insecticide spray can be used over the affected rows and approximately an additional 100 feet beyond. Also, spraying about 100 feet into the wheat stubble is advisable if chinch bugs are still coming out of the wheat field.

Most currently approved insecticides have good efficacy against chinch bugs, if three factors are considered. First, it is important to use the full recommended rate of the selected insecticide, preferably applied in 20 to 40 gallons of water per acre. High gallonage ensures good plant coverage and enhances the movement of material into protected plant parts such as leaf sheaths, which increases the probability of contact with bugs. Second, the material should be applied with properly adjusted and calibrated equipment. Cone nozzles designed for high-pressure use will create smaller droplets and improve coverage. Third, the timing of the insecticide application is critical. Early morning applications are preferred because winds are calm (reducing drift), temperatures are cool (reducing volatilization of chemicals), and a large proportion of the chinch bug population will be on the plants and exposed to the application. None of the materials currently registered for use against chinch bugs has long residual efficacy and plants can outgrow the protection. Because peak migrations may continue for 10 days or more, monitoring is required to determine if additional applications to border rows are necessary.&nbsp;

The races for the fall city and school board elections are
set.

The deadline for interested candidates to file was noon Tuesday
and while there were a number of candidates who filed for several positions, there was still not enough interest to force an August primary election.

To force a primary election, there has to be triple the
number of candidates file for the number of open seats, plus one. 

With three positions up for election on the Ellis and
Victoria city councils, Hays City Commission, the Victoria, Ellis and Hays
school boards, and the Big Creek, Munjor, Prairie Acres and Suburban Estates
Improvement Districts, there would need to be 10 candidates file in each race to
force a primary. None of the races reached that threshold.

Races set for Ellis County city, school board election

Dr. Ivalah Allen is “thrilled” to announce the 74th annual High Plains Music Camp at Fort Hays State University will be in person after having to hold the 2020 version virtually because of the pandemic.

“I was holding my breath until we learned in late March that we had the go-ahead,” said Allen, associate professor of music and theatre director of the camp. “We are excited to have these young musicians back on campus.”

The dates for the camp – which include instruction for middle and high school students in band, orchestra, and vocal – are July 11-17. Registration for a residential, full-time camp participant is $450, which includes lodging and meals. The cost for day participants is $250. All participants receive quality instruction, a drawstring cinch bag, and a T-shirt. Registration is encouraged by June 15. After that date, a $100 late fee will be added to the camp fee.

There will be sessions for middle school band and four areas of instruction featuring high school students – band, jazz band, orchestra, and vocal. The only section that will not be held this year is middle school orchestra because of low early enrollment and lack of enough orchestra staff.

Nightly performances at Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center in Sheridan Hall will include a visit by the Kansas 135th Infantry Band from Fort Riley Tuesday. Those performances, set for 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, are all open and free to the public. Jazz band performances begin at 6 p.m. Friday. There also will be a musical at 6 p.m. Friday in Felten-Start Theatre in Malloy Hall.

The camp, one of a kind in Kansas, is an opportunity to learn from nationally recognized musicians, teachers, and conductors. It also is an excellent recruiting tool for FHSU, and the camp annually is a training ground of sorts for current Fort Hays State students who serve as counselors.

“We have a lot of music education students help at the camp,” she said. “We like to get them involved as counselors because this is the age group they are going to be working with as teachers when they graduate.”

It’s a full week for the participants. After arriving on campus Sunday for registration, they audition for the various levels of instruction. The counselors then begin tours of the campus, and ensemble rehearsals begin following dinner Sunday evening. Following full days of instruction, the participants then are all involved – in one way or another – in the evening concerts.&nbsp;

Allen is looking forward to another action-packed week.

“There are no two years of camp that are alike,” she said. “It can be challenging and keeps us on our toes. But that’s what makes it fun.”

Now that June has arrived, we are officially returning to pre-COVID-19 policies and practices. In general, this means that face coverings are no longer required. Classrooms will be returned to “normal” capacity. The Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center will retire its classroom pandemic re-assignment and re-embrace its performing arts purpose. And a myriad of opportunities to connect and grow in our relationships will proliferate. It is finally time to see smiles as we reconnect deeply and sincerely.&nbsp;

We celebrated this return with a campus-wide picnic on June 2, and I am excited and brimming with optimism.

As we celebrate this renewal, I am reminded of a saying: Grace grows best in the winter. For me, COVID-19 was a time of slowing down, of creating new self-care routines, and being intentional in nurturing and growing key relationships. Now, the great outdoors awaits with a flurry of promises and hope. Masks have been packed away. Dinner parties, parades, concerts, and summer holiday celebrations await.

As my summer calendar quickly fills up, I find myself pausing for a moment to reflect on what I have learned while living, surrendering, and growing through a world-wide pandemic as the Fort Hays State University president. Here are a few of my thoughts:

First, we took the time to frame our path forward by adopting guiding principles before designing strategy or policy. Those guiding principles were: prioritize the health and safety of faculty, staff, and students; protect the mission of FHSU; maintain critical operations and fiscal footing; be mindful of good governance principles; remain nimble and true to FHSU’s innovative culture; and comply with any Kansas Board of Regents directives. These guiding principles helped us stay clear during times of multiple options and especially when our decisions differed from our peers.

Second, we focused on, and drew from, our core institutional characteristics of resiliency, innovation, and care. Our grit and determination have always propelled this western Kansas university forward. From our meager beginnings to our unprecedented successful present, we did what we do best – we got to work. As we confidently “rolled up our sleeves,” we drew upon our legacy as a pioneer in quality distance education. Since 1902, we have delivered learning solutions that fit students’ circumstances – and this time of pandemic was no different. Through a lot of hard work and intelligent risks, our community borrowed best practices while forging our own path.&nbsp;

While the curriculum was boldly being redesigned by our faculty, our staff created care teams to check in on every student throughout the pandemic. This coalition of more than 100 faculty, staff, and student volunteers helped our students stay connected and on track with their academic plans. Our student emergency fund was ramped up. FHSU Foundation trustees wrote checks and asked, “How can I help?”

During the spring of 2020, all students who had an on-campus job were paid whether or not they worked or were unable to work due to returning home. Throughout the pandemic, not one FHSU employee lost their position due to COVID-19. Our highest-need students received an additional $2.9 million in aid, thanks to government assistance. Our 2020-2021 academic calendar remained unchanged, and all breaks were honored so that our people could rest.

As I write about our planning and decisions, it seems so simple. But in the moment, we were leading on the edge. Our people were working harder and intentionally in ways that cannot even be described. It was intense. It was hard.&nbsp;

Third, throughout the process we had incredible partners. The Kansas Board of Regents facilitated information sharing while giving us the latitude to make individual and regional decisions. My colleagues, the university presidents of the other five KBOR universities, met weekly to exchange information and strategies. Though unpopular to some, the city of Hays mask mandate helped us normalize best practices, while the Ellis County Health Department assisted in reinforcing community expectations and protocols. Ellis County went a step further by helping us fund our quarantine protocol by providing hotel and food vouchers for students while our campus care team continually checked on our students. That was remarkable!

Finally, throughout this entire process, I came to understand that this would be a growing season for me. One of the ways I grew as a professional was to learn on a very deep level the difference between managing and leading. I had to figure out where my voice was needed and when my trust was needed more than my voice, when to step into discussions, and when to resist the temptation “to be in charge” so that those closer to critical issues had the space to rely on their expertise to drive solutions. Sometimes these moments were humbling. Sometimes they were nerve-racking. But mostly, I felt the deepest gratitude to be surrounded by strong, smart, humble, hardworking colleagues. As trust was tested and nurtured, I learned a lot about letting go of managing to increase my capacity to lead.

In reflecting back upon this past year and half, I realize that while there will always be challenges and changes, Tiger Nation will continue to press on and grow in spite of them. It is who we are.

MASON: Count on us to be Tiger strong

Many people mistake little barley (Hordeum pusillum) for a little foxtail because the foxtail and little barley seedheads are similar. However, little barley is a winter annual that comes up in late September - October and spends the winter as a small plant. It thrives in the cooler spring temperatures, forms seed heads, and dies out usually by July. Foxtail, on the other hand, is a summer annual that does well in hot weather. Also, foxtail will not produce seedheads until mid-to late-summer. So, why are we talking about little barley now? Because now is NOT the time to control it unless it is in an area where a non-selective herbicide that kills everything such as glyphosate (Roundup) can be used. The best control for little barley in turf is a thick lawn that is mowed high enough that sunlight does not hit the soil. Little barley seed will not germinate in such conditions. Overseeding in early September can thicken up a tall fescue lawn and prevent a little barley infestation. However, if you do not plan to overseed even though the lawn is a bit thin, preemergence herbicides can be used to provide at least partial control of this weed. The only preemergence herbicide that I know is labeled specifically for little barley is&nbsp; Weed Impede by Monterey Lawn and Garden. Weed Impede can only be used on warm-season grasses (bermudagrass, buffalograss, zoysiagrass) and tall fescue that is grown in warm-season areas such as Kansas. However, Dimension (dithiopyr) a pre-emergent, is labeled for barley (Herodium spp.) which would include little barley and therefore can be used to keep this weed under control. Because little barley is a winter annual, apply the preemergence herbicide about mid-September and water in to activate. If overseeding, do not apply any preemergence herbicide as it will interfere with the germination of tall fescue. TOPEKA—The Kansas Supreme Court reappointed 11 members to the Kansas Board for Discipline of Attorneys.

They will serve four-year terms beginning July 1 and ending June 30, 2025.

The Office of the Disciplinary Administrator works under the direction of the Supreme Court. The disciplinary administrator reviews and investigates misconduct complaints filed against attorneys. The office also presents cases to the Kansas Board for Discipline of Attorneys, recommends discipline to the Supreme Court in serious matters, and provides education and resources to Kansas attorneys to prevent misconduct.

John Gatz, Colby, chairs the board, and Roberson is vice chair. They serve on the review committee, along with at-large member Leslie Miller, Lawrence. The committee reviews all cases docketed for investigation and issues reports on case dispositions. Disposition can be dismissal (with or without a letter of caution), diversion, informal admonition, or formal charges.&nbsp;

Board members are attorneys from across the state. They meet in three-person panels to conduct hearings. Each panel includes two board members and one at-large attorney. Panels hear cases after the review committee has found probable cause that an attorney has violated the Kansas Rules of Professional Conduct and that published discipline is warranted.&nbsp;

Great Bend man reappointed to Kan. Board for Discipline of Attorneys

BUNKER HILL – The Earl Bane Foundation has awarded Smoky Hills PBS with a grant for the station’s Literacy Leadership program. The $6,000 grant will provide books to children in Head Start in Saline County and support children’s programming.

“We are thrilled to once again receive support from the Earl Bane Foundation,” said Haley Gagnon, special events coordinator for Smoky Hills PBS. “With the foundation’s support, we are able to provide books for Head Start programs in Saline County and provide children’s programming, PBS KIDS, to all of the children in central and western Kansas. Providing children with the tools for a successful future is an important part of what we do at Smoky Hills PBS.”

The Earl Bane Foundation was established in 1994. Its giving supports primarily higher education, children, youth and social services for the educational, economic, scientific and religious benefit of Salina and Saline County.

The Smoky Hills PBS Book Distribution program provides books each year to Head Start and other early education programs across central and western Kansas through the funding of many foundation partners throughout Kansas. Encouraging a love of reading at a young age is an important aspect of educational development and that serves as the basis of why Smoky Hills PBS provides its Book Distribution Program each year.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment on Wednesday reported one new COVID-19 case in Ellis County had been identified in the past week.

Creighton University economist Ernie Goss sees the growth of government under President Biden's proposed budget as a negative.

"We're going to see an overheated economy," Goss said. "The federal government is expanding. The latest proposed budget for next year is $6 trillion. I'm sorry to be laughing, but that is out there. That's going to have inflationary pressures. The Federal Reserve says that they see this as transitory. We hope and pray it is transitory."

Goss noted that it isn't the same as the late 1970s under President Carter.

"We don't have the oil prices pushing," Goss said. "Oil prices are higher. We're now at $68 a barrel, but we're not seeing that supply-side push in terms of oil. We are seeing it in other areas. For example, lumber. We are seeing that growth there, out the roof. We're seeing housing prices 12% growth year over year."

Another drag on growth in the opinion of several of the managers Goss surveys is a lack of skilled workers.

"Twenty-three percent of the supply managers listed the shortage of workers and the supply of workers as being the number one challenge for 2021 to their company," Goss said. 

Due to the bounce back growth of the economy, however, the overall Mid-America Business Conditions Index was at a strong 72.3 for May. Anything above 50 is considered growth.

Goss: Growth of government could 'overheat' economy

Andrew Duke, who recently graduated from Hays High School, is headed to Princeton University in the fall.

Duke is the grandson of Josephine Squires.

Princeton was not the only Ivy League college at which Duke was accepted. He was also accepted to Harvard and Duke universities.

Duke said he received a generous financial aid package to attend Princeton, but added Princeton was his dream school.

Duke plans to study math with the hopes of eventually earning his Ph.D. and becoming a math professor like his grandfather.

"I really enjoy the subject, and I would like to share it with more people," he said. "Math is a really great subject, and I think it's a shame that a lot of people don't really develop a love for it."

"It is taking the universe as we see it and putting it in terms that we can understand and quantify, and we can use it to predict other things," he said. "I also really like that it is perfectly logical. Any time you have a problem in math, there is a set solution or a set number of solutions."

Duke also has a creative side. He likes to write. He's participated in all of the musicals and all of the plays during his four years of high school. Most recently, he had a role in the HHS production of "Rent."

He also directed  and produced "Twisted: The Untold Story of a Royal Vizier" to earn his Eagle Scout Award.&nbsp;

Duke graduated first in his class and received a perfect score on his ACT on his first attempt, and a 1580 on the SAT. A perfect score on the SAT is 1600.

Duke served as a co-captain of the HHS Scholar's Bowl team, which went to state three of his four years in high school. His math relay team also took first place his junior year. The event was not held this school year because of COVID. He also took home individuals medals in math relays.

He took calculus I, II and III at FHSU, and just finished linear algebra in the spring.

Duke could have applied for advanced placement at the Fort Hays State University Kansas Academy of Math and Science, but he opted to stay at HHS. He also never skipped any grades.

Duke said he wanted his social life and extracurricular activities to thrive as much as his academics. He said being a complete person was more important to him than completing his education a year or two early.

"There were some points where I had to blaze my own path and prepare myself," he said, "because I just think pragmatically Hays High doesn't have the experience and resources to help a student go all the way to an Ivy because the vast majority of students won't be going that far.

"I think I got some great instruction," he said. "I don't think if I hadn't been at as good of a school it would have been at least been a hindrance to me to shoot for the stars."

Some of his most treasured memories have been spending time with his friends, whether that be joking during play practice or eating wings during the Super Bowl.

Duke said he is excited to start college and have more independence, but moving half way across the country to New Jersey to go to school will be difficult.&nbsp;

"It's going to be a massive change and moving a long ways away," he said. "I'm going to be meeting a lot of new people. I don't know anyone who is going to Princeton, personally. ...

"I am crossing my fingers about what comes next."

Hays High graduate headed to Princeton

OPEC and its allies have confirmed plans to return more than two million barrels of crude oil per day to the international marketplace. Energy ministers on Tuesday said they plan to add back 350,000 barrels per day in June and 440,000 barrels per day in July, while Saudi Arabia adds back its one million barrels in additional, voluntary cuts. A technical report from the cartel Monday suggested world oil demand is set for a big rebound. Crude futures prices gained nearly four percent in morning trading Tuesday, ahead of the announcement of increased output. Kansas Common crude at CHS in McPherson starts the week and the month of June at $56.50 per barrel. That's up a quarter from the week before, but nearly three dollars higher than a month earlier. The average price for the month of May was $55.28 per barrel. Independent Oil &amp; Gas reports four active rigs in eastern Kansas, down two for the week, and 18 west of Wichita, down one. Operators are about to spud three new wells in Ellis County, and reached total depth on two more. Drilling was underway on one lease in Stafford County. Baker Hughes reported 457 active drilling rigs across the U.S. on Friday, an increase of three oil rigs.&nbsp; The count in Texas was up four rigs, while New Mexico was down one. The national count is down 4% in the last month, but up 63% year-over-year, according to Enverus Rig Analytics. Out of 27 new drilling permits approved across Kansas last week, just three were west of Wichita. That's 351 new drilling permits so far this year, compared to 187 by the end of May last year amid the pandemic slowdown. It's seven permits short of the total through May of 2019. Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reported 23 new well-completions for the week, nine in eastern Kansas and 14 west of Wichita. That's 300 completed wells so far this year across the state. Weekly U.S. crude-oil production topped eleven million barrels per day for the first time in five weeks, increasing 92,000 barrels per day from the week before. The government reported a slight drop in imports and inventories. For the week ending May 21, domestic stockpiles dropped 1.7 million barrels to just over 484 million. That's about two percent below the five-year seasonal average. Domestic gasoline stockpiles dropped by 1.7 million barrels last week, and are now about three percent below the five-year average. Crude imports were down 138,000 barrels to 6.3 million barrels per day. The four-week average for U.S. imports is down slightly from a year ago. Memorial Day weekend gasoline prices were the highest in seven years. The auto club AAA says the national average Thursday was just over $3.04 per gallon, more than a dollar higher than last year. The average across Kansas was $2.82 per gallon. Prices held steady locally, with most stations in Hays and Great Bend posting $2.74 per gallon. Your 15-gallon fill-up cost nearly $17 more than it did last Memorial Day. Oil-by-rail traffic was down last week but remains nearly ten percent above the totals from a year ago. The Association of American Railroads reported 10,800 tanker cars moving petroleum or petroleum products for the week ending May 22. That's down 430 cars from the week before but it marks a 9.8 percent increase over the same week last year. An oil-drillers group in Canada is raising its drilling forecast for the year. The Petroleum Services Association of Canada, raised it's annual forecast to 3,600 new wells this year, up 7.5 percent from their prediction at the start of the year. A report in the Financial Post credits higher oil demand, support for higher prices, and a big government fund to keep service workers busy decommissioning wells. Drilling in Canada was down 30% in the first quarter of 2021, compared to a year earlier. But the group expects drilling from April to December to double that for the same 9-month period in 2020. The world's largest energy companies are increasingly being forced to rethink their positions on climate change, after historic defeats in the boardroom and in the courtroom. Exxon Mobil lost at least two board seats to a small activist hedge fund making green demands in what was the most expensive proxy fight in history. Vote tallies for five more seats on the Exxon board were too close to call. Shareholders at Chevron backed a call for that company to cut emissions from the end-use of its products. &nbsp;61 percent of voting stockholders supported the petition. And, a judge has ordered Royal Dutch Shell to slash emissions from the end use of its products by 45% in less than ten years. Shell said it would appeal, and analysts said the decision is not the final word in the case. A new government report suggests a huge drop in US electricity consumption last summer, except at home, where usage spiked. Total usage was the lowest in five years. Commercial and Industrial consumption dropped to the lowest level since 2004. But residential consumption was through the roof. The Energy Information Administration says near-record high temperatures, along with more people spending more time at home, prompted all-time record high consumption among residential users. This year, EIA predicts growth in consumption among commercial and industrial customers, and a decline in residential use. The state-run oil company of Mexico is buying the remaining interest in a refinery complex it operates in Houston. For nearly thirty years, PEMEX and Shell have jointly operated the Deer Park facility in a fifty-fifty partnership. Now Pemex is buying out its partner for $596 million in cash, debt, and inventory. Shell officials said they had not planned on marketing their half of the refinery, but reached the agreement following an unsolicited offer.

Demonstrations in wheat grinding, bread making, milking, butter making, rope making, bees wax candle making, washing, gardening, knitting, aprons, knot tying, and much more will be presented and all ages will be able to participate. Kids can get their "Passport to History" by participating in demonstrations and win prizes.&nbsp; The Russell County Muzzle Loaders will have an encampment set up all four days, and a chuckwagon display and cowboy poet will be on hand along with Will Rogers and Abe Lincoln personalities. A program on Women’s 1800s Fashion will be held on Saturday at 2 pm.&nbsp;

Prairie heritage events, demonstrations featured at Prairiesta 2021

By KIM BALDWIN McPherson County farmer and rancher Summer is here! The kids completed their last day of school and have officially reported for summer duty as farm kids. During a recent breakfast conversation, my family sat down to identify some goals for this summer. The kids want to bake cupcakes, ride their bikes, go fishing and visit some museums. My husband wants to harvest wheat and manage irrigation. I want to maintain a clean house. I know some goals are loftier than others. &nbsp; Another major goal is to keep the kids learning so they don’t experience the “summer slip.” &nbsp; A weekly visit to the local library, daily reading expectations, intentional quiet time, and going outside to enjoy and explore the outdoors (while also burning off energy) are all on the agenda. There’s a lot of “learning” my husband and I want the kids to experience this summer.&nbsp; &nbsp; As we were having this family conversation, storm clouds were forming in the counties to the far west of us. The TV weather personalities began mentioning the potential for extreme weather later in the day. As the day continued, the sky to the west of us began darkening and you could hear an occasional rumble of thunder in the distance. &nbsp; By late afternoon, my daughter’s tee-ball coach began texting parents to determine if we’d continue with our evening practice. The atmosphere was changing, and you could feel it in the air. The weather personalities were now on the TV more than the regular programs while a radar image filled the screen. The folks in the counties west of us were definitely experiencing some weather. &nbsp; As our tee-ballers were learning how to hit a ball and run to first base, the darkness filling the horizon to the west expanded to include the northern sky. Rumbles of thunder became more frequent and closer. &nbsp; Practice was cut short because of &nbsp;the threat of lightning. As we drove home we talked about the great science lesson we were about to experience. We’d be able to enjoy an unobstructed view to watch those western storm clouds build and move to the east while staying well to the north of us.&nbsp; &nbsp; Once at our prime viewing spot, I could tell the kids clearly felt the energy building to the north and west of us. It was an impressive display of darkness within those moving clouds. We could hear the thunder. We could see the lightning. We could smell the rain. And we could feel when the wind shifted. &nbsp; The storm that was once to the north of us was now rapidly moving toward us. We quickly moved the vehicles into our shop before the rain began. We went back to the house and turned on the TV. The radar showed what we already knew. &nbsp; From our porch we watched excitedly as the rain fell hard and our driveway quickly became a stream. And then the hail began. Large hail. Tapping on the roof, beating the trees and bushes, bouncing before carpeting the ground. The kids’ excitement turned to concern as the hail continued falling. It kept falling. We witnessed the most wicked hail we have ever experienced. &nbsp; Early the next morning, the kids were with us as my husband and I scouted our fields and assessed the damage. The kids helped find all of the dents and broken mirrors and busted windshields I needed to take photos of for insurance. They counted the holes now allowing light to shine through into the machine shed. They walked into the saturated wheat fields to help their daddy count the broken stems of full wheat heads that would have been harvested in just a few weeks. They drove through the water to check on the submerged fields of newly planted corn and soybeans. &nbsp; They heard my husband and I calmly evaluating and problem-solving each situation.&nbsp; &nbsp; And they learned through our words and our reactions that it could have been much worse and there is still so much to be thankful for even with all of the damage. &nbsp; I can’t quite connect all of the formal educational standards and competencies we covered during this event, but know wholeheartedly that even though it's summer break, our kids have already gained some pretty important lessons here on the farm.

Life of longtime FHSU employee will be celebrated Saturday

ELLIS COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just after 2:30p.m. Tuesday in Ellis County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2020 Hyundai Sonota driven by Jessica R Wise, 31, Wichita, was eastbound on Interstate 70 near the Victoria exit. The car hydroplaned into the the ditch and rolled&nbsp;

EMS transported Wise and a passenger identified as Corey L. Dabbs, Sr, 39, Wichita to Hays Medical Center. A 7-year-old passenger was not injured. All three were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

Phase 3 of the second season of the North Vine Street Corridor 
Project begins this week, weather permitting. 

During this phase, 
traffic on Vine Street in the area from 35th Street to 43rd Street will 
be shifted to the west side of Vine Street on the new pavement so that 
work can begin on the east side. Like previous phases of construction, 
left turns are not allowed in areas of construction where traffic is 
reduced to a single lane. Only right turns will be allowed to and from 
the I-70 ramps and various intersections. The currently posted detours 
will direct traffic through the construction zones. &nbsp;

Southbound 
Vine to eastbound I-70; as well as, eastbound I-70 to northbound Vine is
 being detoured to use the 32nd Street roundabout. &nbsp; &nbsp; Northbound Vine 
Street to westbound I-70; as well as, westbound I-70 to southbound Vine 
is detoured to use 41st Street, General Hays Road and 43rd Street. 
&nbsp;This phase of construction is expected to last several months through 
the summer.

Vine traffic will shift again as roundabout work continues

The Hays Hurricanes Swim
 Club is up and running (or swimming), and our summer session begins 
Tuesday with practice and parent meeting at the Fort Hays State University pool. The parent meeting will be at 6:15 p.m., with practice from 6:45 to 8:15 p.m.
