On Monday, Fort Hays State University welcomed students for the first day of classes and a little bit of fun, with the annual Back to School picnic.

Hundreds crowded the FHSU quad to visit with over 40 area businesses and student organizations during the afternoon event.

"The Back to School Picnic is iconic," said Fort Hays State University President Tisa Mason.

That event welcomed NCK Tech and Hays Hair Academy students to campus, along with the community, to introduce students to Hays.

In previous years, Downtown Hays Development Corp. has hosted the March 2 Main, but this year those activities were included in the picnic.

"Re-evaluating it in 2021, we got all of the major key players together and said, 'Why have two fantastic events that are going to compete against each other? Why not join forces and have one big blowout?' " said Allie Glidewell, DHDC director of events and operations.

The university also hosted vaccination events during the first week to make it easy for anyone to be vaccinated to receive one, including an event during the Back to School Picnic.

While the university began the semester with no face masks or vaccination mandates, Mason said FHSU would monitor the situation closely and encourage safe behaviors.

"We will continue, just like we did with our phaseout plan, to encourage face coverings," Mason said.

But she said some specific courses, situations or gatherings on campus might implement masking requirements as needed.

"Unlike many of the other universities, it is not an all-class mandate. It is by decision of the faculty member or a specific organization," Mason said.

Even without the requirement in place, she said some have taken to wearing masks.

"We want to make sure the people who are wearing masks are feeling comfortable, not bullied, and that we are respecting them and thanking them for doing that," Mason said.

The university will also encourage COVID-19 vaccinations for those students and staff.

"We have a robust vaccination incentive program," Mason said. "That includes direct payment of $400 to eligible Fort Hays State University students and employees."

Other Kansas schools have offered drawings and scholarship dollars, but she said the direct financial payment made more sense for FHSU.

"First of all, it is a direct payment of cash," Mason said. "It applies to every student and our faculty and staff. ... We think cash is a good incentive. We think our students will spend a lot of that money locally, which will pump into the community as well, and it's the right thing to do. It's to encourage people to take that step if there are people willing and able to, to protect our community."

And those previously vaccinated are also eligible.

"All you have to do is show your card, voluntarily, and you will get your $400," Mason said.

She said with this program, they are respecting individual rights while incentivizing community members to move forward with the vaccination.

Through the FHSU gateway program, students at NCK Tech and the Hays Academy of Hair Design are also eligible for the incentive.

Eligible students and staff can provide their vaccination cards until Oct. 8 to be eligible.

While FHSU students will being classes without COVID-19 precautions mandated, as case counts continue to rise, Mason said they will continue to monitor and make changes as needed.

"The one thing that we don't want to do, is to go back to remote learning," she said.&nbsp;"We know that that is a challenge for students so we are doing everything possible to prevent that. We have the flexibility and we will do what we need to do, but we want to keep students face-to-face."

The Hays USD 489 school board voted Monday night to take applications for a board vacancy.

Nuchelle Chance resigned her seat because she moved out of the district.

Chance's term was set to expire in January. The November election will determine who takes the seat.&nbsp;

Unless the person who is appointed is someone who is running for school board and is also elected to the board, the person who is appointed would only serve until the newly elected board members take their seats in January.

Board member Lori Hertel made a motion to leave the seat vacant until the newly elected board members take their seats in January. Her motion died for lack of a second.

The school district will publish a notice of the vacancy in the local newspaper. Fifteen days after publication, the board can appoint someone to the vacancy.

COLBY — Former professional football player and current educator, entrepreneur and NFL agent Ron Freeman will begin the 2021-22 Dr. Max Pickerill Lecture Series at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 7. The presentation will be in Frahm Theatre on the CCC campus.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Freeman earned graduate and undergraduate degrees from Pittsburg State University. He later played for the Buffalo Bills and the Kansas City Chiefs of the NFL, and the Pittsburgh Maulers, Jacksonville Bulls, and the Orlando Renegades of the United States Football League. He has lived in the Kansas City area since leaving the game.&nbsp;

He served as the Kansas City urban director before launching his coaching and speaking business. His latest venture is working with the education community to develop leadership at the administrative level. It was in that work that he saw the need to rethink race.&nbsp;

As he grew up during the 1960s, Freeman said he got a first-hand look at Jim Crow laws and the Civil Rights movement. His passion for history motivated him to dig deeper into race matters, and the resulting book, "Rethinking Race," references the events that inspired him to see race differently.&nbsp;

Freeman will speak about his experiences and provide insight on current national issues and the possibilities for racial healing.

Former KC Chief opens Pickerill lectures at Colby CC

By KIM BALDWIN McPherson&nbsp;County farmer After a few months of all that summer on the farm entails, the kids have returned to school. From helping with wheat harvest, hauling meals and equipment out to fields, taking naps in the car while helping me complete parts runs, sweeping shop floors, assisting with irrigation duties and making popcorn deliveries, it’s safe to say my kids experienced a healthy dose of farm-kid living during their summer break.&nbsp; &nbsp; Secretly, my husband and I conspired and we now fully admit that some of the summer tasks were created to encourage our kids to say, “Man, I can’t wait to get back to school!” &nbsp; This school year, our family has entered a new phase. No longer am I shuttling kids to and from school on a daily basis because both are old enough to ride the school bus. &nbsp; It’s been the topic of many conversations throughout the summer. The excitement of the idea of riding a bus to and from school is something both my children have really built up over the last few months. In fact, as we have approached the start of a new school year, it wasn’t the promise of wearing new clothes, meeting new teachers, making new friends or getting to enjoy a school pizza lunch with their buddies that truly excited my kids. &nbsp; What has motivated my two children every morning has been the countdown to the first day they could ride the big, yellow bus. &nbsp; A week before the first bus ride, we decided everyone needed to get back into the morning school routine. We agreed everyone would need to get out of bed earlier. Everyone would need to be dressed and at the breakfast table by a specific time. And everyone would need to head out the door to ensure the bus would make a stop for the Baldwin children. &nbsp; Oddly, the plans to return to a morning routine were well received by both children. The excitement surrounding the school bus led to both children waking up way before they needed to every morning. They were fully dressed and at the table with plenty of time to spare. They wanted to make sure they practiced the morning routine because they wanted to get on that big, yellow bus. &nbsp; Finally, the big day arrived. The children were awake, dressed, fed and excitedly waiting at the end of our driveway for their chariot. They waved as trucks drove past. They stood in silence to listen for the bus. And finally, after offering assurances that the bus had not forgotten our stop, the big yellow bus arrived. &nbsp; Following the first day, my son realized they would travel many miles of bumpy dirt roads. His overwhelming excitement of sitting in the back of the bus was momentarily quelled that first day thanks to his tendency to get car sick. Apparently all those bumpy rural roads make for a pretty uneasy ride if you sit in the way back of the bus.&nbsp; &nbsp; However, after making a seating adjustment, my two agree that you can still enjoy a bus ride even if you sit closer to the driver. &nbsp; While my two children are not the first on or the last off the bus, they’re pretty darn close to it. Our small school district only has a few busses running the country routes. My kids ride a bus that traverses the far boundaries of the west, north and northeast parts of the school district.&nbsp; &nbsp; Catching the bus in the morning means heading out the door almost 40 minus earlier than when I would chauffeur my passengers last year. It also means you get home later.&nbsp; &nbsp; As we continue our morning routines and the newness of a new school year begins to fade, it is my hope that my two will continue to look forward to going to school every morning – even if it’s mainly because they get to traverse the bumpy rural dirt roads on a big yellow bus.

A former Ellis County law enforcement officer has pleaded no
contest to possessing child pornography and stealing guns from the Hays Police Department.

On Tuesday, Blaine D. Dryden, Hays, entered no contest pleas in
Ellis County District Court to aggravated internet trading of child
pornography, sexual exploitation of a child and theft of a firearm. As a
result, he was found guilty on all three charges by Chief Judge Glenn Braun.

Under the plea agreement, Dryden faces a minimum of 91 months, or more than seven and a half years in prison. 

Dryden was originally charged with aggravated internet
trading of child pornography and seven counts of sexual exploitation of a
child, with the additional charge of theft of a firearm.

According to information presented at Tuesday’s hearing by
the Kansas Attorney General’s Office, which is handling the case, in November
2019 the Hays Police Department received a tip about child pornography being
shared through Facebook. 

The investigation led officers to a location in the 1600
block of West 29th in Hays. After it was determined that Dryden resided
at the residence, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation was called to handle the
investigation.

Dryden was employed with the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office at the time and served as a lieutenant with the department until June 16, 2020.
He worked for the sheriff’s department for nearly six and a half years.

The Kansas Attorney General’s office said Dryden uploaded
and sent a sexual image of a young girl to a woman in Nebraska.

During the investigation, Dryden admitted to uploading the
image to law enforcement officials. They also discovered similar images and
several electronic devices at Dryden’s Hays residence. 

After the investigation was complete, law enforcement officials
served a second search warrant at the same location in the 1600 block of West
29th in April in connection with firearms stolen from
the Hays Police Department.

The state attorney general’s office determined that Dryden was
in possession of four guns connected to Hays Police Department
investigations.

Dryden had falsified paperwork claiming he had destroyed the
guns when, in fact, he did not, the attorney general's office said.

Sentencing will be scheduled for later this year, and Dryden was
remanded to the Ellis County jail.

The Hays school board approved its budget at its meeting Monday night with a slight mill levy decrease.&nbsp;

The mill levy decreased from 41.241 mills last year to 41.236 mills for the 2021-22 school year.

The school district's valuation increased from $322,681,782 in 2020-21 to $335,274,898 for the 2021-22 school year.

Because the district's valuation increased, the school board had to conduct a revenue-neutral hearing. This hearing is required by law for any entity that has a revenue increase.

Chris Hipp, assistant superintendent of business services, said the district has one of the lowest tax rates in the state.

During the KAYS Morning Show on Monday, Superintendent Ron Wilson said the low tax rate can be attributed to a strong local valuation and the district's lack of a bond.

The district is basing its budget on flat enrollment this year.&nbsp;

The district has been able to sustain about 6 percent in its contingency reserve. The district uses those funds in cases of unforeseen expenses, including to pay a more than $21,000 gas bill the district received after February's cold snap.

That gas bill had been $65,000, but with the help of the Kansas Association of School Boards, the district was able to negotiate the bill down to $21,699.

Board Vice-President Craig Pallister&nbsp;said the Kansas Legislature has long recommended school districts spend at least 60 percent of their expenditures on instruction. He noted the district's budget was well above that at 62 percent for 2021-22.

"I would like to see professional development grow," he said. "Because we say the most important person in that school and that classroom is the teacher. We need to get them training."

Wilson said the district is doing more professional development this year than any year in recent memory. It is using state partnerships to reduce costs to the district.

Casey Herrman, board candidate, said during the public comment period student fees are outrageous.

The carry-over in that fund is $716,000. Herrman said he did not understand why fees remained so high when the fund continues to increase.

About 30 people attended the school board meeting Monday, many to express their opposition to masks in schools. Nine of those people spoke during the public forum portion of the meeting.&nbsp;

The school district does not have a mask mandate at this time.

Wilson said 17 students have tested positive for COVID-19 as of Monday. Six more are in the testing process. <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/52b11376-f7f4-4fc7-bedd-8e90885942e8">See details of the district's COVID precautions.</a>

The board approved engineering contracts with Integrated Consulting Engineers for design work on air-conditioning projects at Wilson Elementary School and Hays High School.

The design fee for the HHS project is $120,000. The Wilson design fee is $52,500.

ICE has done design work for the district before.&nbsp;

The district is not required to send design contracts out for bid. Board member Allen Park said he wished the contracts had been sent for bids anyway.

Wilson said he hoped work could begin on the projects in the spring.

The board also approved the new HHS student handbook.

🎙Hays USD 489 board approves budget with lower mill levy

The floodwaters may have receded months ago, but the small community of Natoma is still trying to address the devastation that May flooding brought.

Mayor Rick Dunlap said the recovery process has been slow.

That process has been made more difficult by a lack of recovery funds.&nbsp;

Ryan Cook, city treasurer, said the not enough people nor structures were affected by the flood to qualify for Federal Emergency Management Agency relief funds.

Dunlap and Dale Eickhoff, city council president, are both on the fire department and helped with evacuations on the day of the flood.

"Even though it affected a third of our community, it did not qualify because what it destroyed did not meet the threshold that FEMA has today,"&nbsp;Eickhoff said.

Cook said the community did qualify for Small Business Administration funds. The community also received thousands in private donations. ICT Great Plains, a company that owns an electric transmission line outside of Natoma, donated $12,000 to the Community recovery fund on Monday.

The Osborne Community Foundation donated $5,000 to match local funds that had already been raised.&nbsp;

Rep. Troy Waymaster, R-Bunker Hill, and Sen. Elaine Bowers, R-Concordia, were both in Natmoa Monday for the donation presentations.

"When I was on the phone with the governor when this all happened, the [FEMA] threshold was $4.4 million. Gov. Kelly said they won't hit that threshold for FEMA to respond," Waymaster said. "It is unfortunate and should not be that way.&nbsp;

"If there is an emergency happening, regardless of what the dollar amount is, FEMA should react to it. In '93, they didn't have that threshold. Why do they have it now?"

Eickhoff said, "A town the size of Natoma has a huge loss to them, and it doesn't qualify. It was a huge loss none the same. In comparison to anyone else, we had a disaster, yet it doesn't meet their criteria."

Dunlap said the full damage to the community is yet to be seen. Officials had to let the water table go down in order to start assessing the damage to the city's water and sewer systems.

The floodwaters overran the city's water plant, and the city was on a boil water advisory for a time.

City sidewalks and streets were also damaged by the rushing water.

Most of the people who had homes that were heavily damaged by the flood have moved into other homes in the area.&nbsp;

"I think a lot of people were thinking they'd receive a check to rebuild, and that is not how this works," Dunlap said.

The Post Office, which was damaged in the flood, remains closed. Repairs included asbestos removal. A date for reopening the building has not yet been set.

"Over here on First Street and the next one over you could see the pavement, and then six minutes later, you couldn't see it," he said. "It had risen 2 feet that fast."

Local officials, including Dunlap and Eickhoff, tried to coordinate rescue efforts. The water came up so fast that many people were stranded in their homes and had to be rescued.

The water was too swift for boats, and eventually, rescue crews had to use a high loader to navigate the water.

"That was our whole main concern the first day was getting people out, and it took most of the day," Dunlap said.

Saturday, the Hays Aquatic Park was filled with a different kind of patron — the four-legged kind — as they hosted the annual dog swim to wrap up the season.

In conjunction with Doggie Play Day, participants were not only able to let their four-legged family members enjoy the cool water on a warm August Saturday, but they also got to take home crafts made with the help of the pets.

After their worst week in nine months crude prices rose five percent on Monday. Brent crude dropped to its lowest price since May on Monday, but later jumped five percent, recovering somewhat from a seven-day losing streak in which prices dropped 8 percent. Both benchmarks marked their biggest week of losses in more than nine months. WTI was nine percent lower, but posted 5 percent gains on Monday.&nbsp; Near-month light sweet crude on the Nymex settled Friday at $62.32 per barrel, the lowest settlement for the benchmark contract since May 21.&nbsp; In midday trading Monday that contract was up more than $3 to $65.54. Most analysts credit a rise in global stock prices and a weaker dollar for the rise in oil prices. Kansas Common crude starts the week at $52.50 per barrel, down a dollar and a half from a week ago, and down $12 from the first of the month. Gasoline prices are slightly lower across the U.S., and across Kansas. Triple-A says the national average was cent and a half lower than a week ago, a half cent higher than a month ago, and nearly a dollar per gallon higher than a year ago. On Monday, the U.S. average was just over $3.16 per gallon. The average across Kansas was just over $2.90 per gallon. On Monday, most stations in Hays were down to $2.83 per gallon. Prices in Great Bend were down to $2.79 per gallon. The weekly Rig Count in Kansas from Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service was largely unchanged with eight active rigs in eastern Kansas and 24 west of Wichita.&nbsp; Drilling was underway on one lease in Barton County. Baker Hughes reported 503 active drilling rigs nationwide for the week, an increase of eight oil drilling rigs but a drop of five rigs seeking natural gas. The count in Texas was down one, but New Mexico, North Dakota, and Utah were each up one. Kansas regulators last week okayed 22 permits for drilling at new locations across the state, five of them east of Wichita and 17 in Western Kansas, including one new drilling location in Ellis County. Operators completed 16 new wells statewide last week. That makes 508 newly-completed wells so far this year. Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reports eleven new completions in eastern Kansas and five in the western half of the state, including one in Stafford County. The latest report from the Kansas Geological Society shows drillers have discovered three new oil fields in Kansas, located in Lane and Rawlins counties, bringing the total so far this year to 13 new fields. That total includes three in Ellis county and one in Russell County. A weekly report from the Energy Information Administration pegged U.S. stockpiles at 435.5 million barrels, down more than three million barrels, and about six percent below the five-year average for this time of year. U.S. crude production topped 11 million barrels a day for the tenth straight week. The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports domestic output for the week through August 13th was up slightly over the week before, to just over 11.4 million barrels per day. U.S. crude imports were down last week to 6.4 million barrels per day. The four-week average for imports is up more than 14% over last year. OPEC's Monthly Oil Market Report predicts a modest increase in economic growth worldwide this year, but not enough to improve the cartel's demand expectations. The cartel is standing by its earlier predictions that worldwide demand this year will grow by just six million barrels per day to an average of 96.6 million barrels per day. The cartel predicts global economic growth of 5.6% this year, an increasingly optimistic view.&nbsp; Now that an international group has discovered nine billion barrels of recoverable oil and gas off its coast, the tiny South American nation of Guyana is shooting for better terms. Reuters quotes the vice president saying the Profit Sharing Agreement for future projects will be ready within about six months and will be tougher than the one negotiated with the consortium. The country expects to install an energy regulatory body and will soon name the winner of a one-year contract to market all that crude. Carbon capture technology is red hot, even as climate warnings reach code red. A report from Bloomberg notes the market for sequestering greenhouse gases is expected to skyrocket, particularly in Europe, where industries are paying increasing prices for emissions and governments strive to reach net zero. A report from Credit Suisse Group says the market could reach $2 trillion. The process siphons off carbon dioxide, compresses it, transports it and then stores it in depleted oil reservoirs. The number of projects planned around the world has risen six-fold since 2019 to 300, according to analysts at Wood Mackenzie.

Brent crude dropped to its lowest price since May on Monday, but later jumped five percent, recovering somewhat from a seven-day losing streak in which prices dropped 8 percent. Both benchmarks marked their biggest week of losses in more than nine months. WTI was nine percent lower, but posted 5 percent gains on Monday.&nbsp; Near-month light sweet crude on the Nymex settled Friday at $62.32 per barrel, the lowest settlement for the benchmark contract since May 21.&nbsp; In midday trading Monday that contract was up more than $3 to $65.54. Most analysts credit a rise in global stock prices and a weaker dollar for the rise in oil prices. Kansas Common crude starts the week at $52.50 per barrel, down a dollar and a half from a week ago, and down $12 from the first of the month. Gasoline prices are slightly lower across the U.S., and across Kansas. Triple-A says the national average was cent and a half lower than a week ago, a half cent higher than a month ago, and nearly a dollar per gallon higher than a year ago. On Monday, the U.S. average was just over $3.16 per gallon. The average across Kansas was just over $2.90 per gallon. On Monday, most stations in Hays were down to $2.83 per gallon. Prices in Great Bend were down to $2.79 per gallon. The weekly Rig Count in Kansas from Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service was largely unchanged with eight active rigs in eastern Kansas and 24 west of Wichita.&nbsp; Drilling was underway on one lease in Barton County. Baker Hughes reported 503 active drilling rigs nationwide for the week, an increase of eight oil drilling rigs but a drop of five rigs seeking natural gas. The count in Texas was down one, but New Mexico, North Dakota, and Utah were each up one. Kansas regulators last week okayed 22 permits for drilling at new locations across the state, five of them east of Wichita and 17 in Western Kansas, including one new drilling location in Ellis County. Operators completed 16 new wells statewide last week. That makes 508 newly-completed wells so far this year. Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reports eleven new completions in eastern Kansas and five in the western half of the state, including one in Stafford County. The latest report from the Kansas Geological Society shows drillers have discovered three new oil fields in Kansas, located in Lane and Rawlins counties, bringing the total so far this year to 13 new fields. That total includes three in Ellis county and one in Russell County. A weekly report from the Energy Information Administration pegged U.S. stockpiles at 435.5 million barrels, down more than three million barrels, and about six percent below the five-year average for this time of year. U.S. crude production topped 11 million barrels a day for the tenth straight week. The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports domestic output for the week through August 13th was up slightly over the week before, to just over 11.4 million barrels per day. Members of the Hays Volga German Society, organizers of Oktoberfest Hays, have announced the 49th annual Volga German Oktoberfest will take place Friday, Oct. 1, from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 2, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., in Municipal Park.&nbsp;

Oktoberfest Hays also announced the traditional raising of steins and wearing of lederhosen will be part of the 2021 event. The free admission event will feature two days filled with German traditions, from food and drinks, to music, contests, dancing, a cornhole tournament, kids activities and more.&nbsp;

Registration is still open for vendors to become an integral part of a longstanding Hays tradition. Oktoberfest Hays consistently attracts thousands of visitors and residents who attend every year. In addition, the event provides the opportunity to expose businesses to a diverse demographic, due in part to the multitude of activities offered for every age and family size.&nbsp;

Pre-emergence herbicides with residual activity are an important component of high-yielding cropping systems. They are used less frequently in wheat production compared to other cropping systems in Kansas, but residual herbicides applied prior to wheat emergence can be part of a good weed management system in wheat production. Most residual herbicides labeled for pre-emergence application in wheat are Group 2 (ALS-inhibiting) herbicides, which are associated with herbicide resistant populations of kochia, marestail (horseweed), bushy wallflower, flixweed, henbit, and brome species in Kansas. Products in Groups 14 (the PPO-inhibiting herbicides) and 15 (the long-chain fatty acid inhibiting herbicides) are also labeled; however, they are generally more dependent on rainfall for activation than the Group 2 herbicides.

Herbicides without residual activity may be applied with or without residual herbicides in the weeks prior to planting wheat. Older products include the Group 2 herbicides Amber, Olympus, and Pre-Pare, as well as Group 4 (plant growth regulating) herbicides like 2,4-D, dicamba, or fluroxypyr (StareDown,). It is especially important to be aware of planting interval restrictions for Group 4 herbicides, which range from 10 to 45 days.

When selecting pre-emergence herbicides for use in wheat production, keep in mind that many of these products are also labeled for use in emerged wheat. Unless using a planned split-application, avoid repeated use of products from the same herbicide group to slow the development of herbicide-resistant weed populations in your fields.

Field bindweed is a particularly troublesome weed for which a special discussion is justified. In a 12-year experiment conducted at the Agricultural Research Center in Hays, field bindweed reduced wheat yield 2 to 50%. Management of this weed during wheat establishment is important because field bindweed continues to grow until temperatures drop below 20°F.

The herbicides most commonly recommended for field bindweed control include various formulations of 2,4-D, dicamba, and glyphosate. Dicamba tends to provide greater control for fall applications compared to 2,4-D or glyphosate, especially if plants are drought-stressed. Another commonly used product is Facet (quinclorac). It is most effective when applied just before the first killing frost. Other herbicides that are labeled for fall application to control or suppress field bindweed in wheat include Affinity, Aim, and Cimarron.

Satisfactory control of field bindweed will not be achieved with a single herbicide application. It will take multiple years of herbicide applications to deplete the energy stored in the root system and control an established infestation.

Older products include the Group 2 herbicides Amber, Olympus, and Pre-Pare, as well as Group 4 (plant growth regulating) herbicides like 2,4-D, dicamba, or fluroxypyr (StareDown,). It is especially important to be aware of planting interval restrictions for Group 4 herbicides, which range from 10 to 45 days.When selecting pre-emergence herbicides for use in wheat production, keep in mind that many of these products are also labeled for use in emerged wheat. Unless using a planned split-application, avoid repeated use of products from the same herbicide group to slow the development of herbicide-resistant weed populations in your fields.Field bindweed controlField bindweed is a particularly troublesome weed for which a special discussion is justified. In a 12-year experiment conducted at the Agricultural Research Center in Hays, field bindweed reduced wheat yield 2 to 50%. Management of this weed during wheat establishment is important because field bindweed continues to grow until temperatures drop below 20°F.The herbicides most commonly recommended for field bindweed control include various formulations of 2,4-D, dicamba, and glyphosate. Dicamba tends to provide greater control for fall applications compared to 2,4-D or glyphosate, especially if plants are drought-stressed. Another commonly used product is Facet (quinclorac). It is most effective when applied just before the first killing frost. Other herbicides that are labeled for fall application to control or suppress field bindweed in wheat include Affinity, Aim, and Cimarron.Satisfactory control of field bindweed will not be achieved with a single herbicide application. RUSSELL COUNTY—A Kansas man was injured in an accident just after 2p.m. Monday in Russell County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2014 Freightliner semi driven by Simon U. Miller, 56, Salina, was north bound on Kansas 232 at Kansas 181. The vehicle took the curve too fast and overturned.

EMS transported Miller to the hospital in Russell. He was properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

A variety of options are available, including reserved season tickets, all-sports season passes, and single-game tickets. HaysMed has announced two new physicians have joined its the medical staff. Dr. Abigail Serpan, family medicine, and Dr. Justin Helberg, hospitalist, began working Monday.

Dr. Serpan completed medical school at the University of Kansas School of Medicine, Salina Campus. She completed a residency at Pierre Rural Family Medicine. She will be seeing patients at Family Medicine at HaysMed.

Dr. Helberg completed his medical schooling at The University of Kansas School of Medicine, Wichita.&nbsp; He completed a residency in internal medicine at Moses Cone Internal Medicine Residency Program, Greensboro, North Carolina.&nbsp; Dr. Helberg will be part of the hospitalist team that specializes in treating in-patients in the hospital.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment on Monday reported 32 new COVID-19 cases in Ellis County had been identified since Friday.&nbsp;

As of Monday, the University of Kansas Health System reported 14 COVID-19 inpatients at HaysMed, down from 17 on Friday.
