A winter storm warning is in effect from 6 p.m. Wednesday to 6 p.m. Thursday, the National Weather Service in Dodge City reported.
The front is expected to bring 5 to 6 inches of snow to the Hays and Ellis County area, with more accumulation possible to the north and west.
The snow is expected to be accompanied by winds gusting to 40 mph, which could reduce visibility and lead to drifting and snow-covered roads.
The mercury will drop to 12 overnight, with wind chill values as low as 4 degrees below zero.
Snow is expected to begin after 5 p.m. in Ellis and Trego counties, last through the day Thursday and taper off by Thursday evening.
