Ellis Homecoming set for Oct. 10

After 25 impactful years, HaysMed is retiring its traditional drive-thru flu shot clinic and launching a more flexible, integrated approach to community health. Starting this fall, flu shots will be offered during its monthly blood screening events- providing a convenient, one-stop opportunity for preventive care.

The decision to discontinue the drive-thru format comes in response to changing community needs and increased access to free flu shots at local pharmacies such as Walgreens, Walmart, and Dillon’s. While the HaysMed drive-thru clinic once served nearly 4,000 individuals annually, recent participation has dropped below 1,500. This new format allows the hospital to better align with current trends and improve accessibility for the community.

Participants can now receive a free flu shot, participate in blood screening lab draws, or do both- all in one visit. Flu shots will be available on the following Saturdays from 6:30 a.m. – 10:00a.m. at Entrance B (Miller Pavillion), using parking Lot B on September 6, October 4, or November 1, 2025.

Children’s flu shots will be administered in the same area as adult vaccinations to simplify the experience for families. To help with flow and minimize wait times, participants may choose to go directly to the flu shot station or begin with blood screening.

Since its inception, HaysMed has proudly administered 69,802 flu shots to the community. In 2024 alone, the hospital provided 1,300 adult and 378 pediatric vaccines free of charge, thanks to the support of the HaysMed Foundation.

The HaysMed flu shot events have also supported local families through food donations. In 2024, participants donated 583 pounds of canned food to the Community Assistance Center. Since 2007, the hospital collected a total of 26,854 pounds- nearly 13.5 tons of food!

All attendees are encourage to bring a non-perishable food item to continue this tradition of giving back.

U.S.Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kansas, gave a speech on the Senate floor on Wednesday honoring Sgt. Scott Heimann of the Hays Police Department, who was killed in the line of duty on Sunday.

"Hays Police Officer Sgt. Scott Heimann tragically died on Sunday while defending his community from harm.  Hays is a small, tight-knit town, and the loss of this young man is deeply heartbreaking for us. 

We will always remember Sgt. Heimann's sacrifice and honor the legacy he leaves behind. My prayers are with Sgt Heimann’s wife, children and the entire law enforcement and Hays community during this difficult time."

Senator Marshall also introduced a Senate resolution to honor the life and sacrifice of Sgt. Heimann.

Sen. Moran honors Sgt. Heimann on Senate floor

Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler at a Wednesday night vigil for Sgt. Scott Heimann said that his deep faith had been shaken in the wake of the <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/259a0a4e-7e84-4de0-abd6-7a961ab84091">Sunday killing in the line of duty of one of his officers</a>.

He added he continued to find comfort in the word of God.

Heimann served on the Hays Police Department since 2016, all of those years under the direction of Scheibler. He was serving as a patrol sergeant when he was killed, having recently been promoted.

Mourners gathered Wednesday night at the Thomas More Prep-Marian grotto for a candlelight vigil for Heimann. Many of them were his peers dressed in uniform. The Kansas Highway Patrol offered a special escort for the family.

"Scott was an amazing and talented man," Scheibler said. "He was kind and compassionate and caring in all that he did. Scott was so smart, so strong. He had an amazing sense of humor.&nbsp;

"If Scott were here, he would tell you he was handsome too," Scheibler said, which brought giggles from the crowd.

He said Heimann could have done anything in the world and been successful. He wanted to be a Hays Police officer.

"He wanted to stand on the wall and protect this community," Scheibler said. "I think it's important that you know that he wanted to protect you."

He said this made him successful throughout his career. Scheibler said he was a strong leader and a mentor for the Hays Police Department.

Scheibler said Heimann joked with him that he was keeping the seat warm for him, as Scott hoped to one day be the chief of the Hays Police Department.

"Scott impacted our community in so many ways," he said, "By reading books to children in the library, giving knuckle bumps as kids walked to school, wrestling drunks in the bar, to responding to the most dangerous threats in our community."

Scheibler's voice began to waver, "During the last few days, as my thoughts dwell on Scott, I'm reminded of the Bible verse Isiah 6:8.

"And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, 'Whom should I send? Who will go for us?' And I said, 'Here I am.'"

"When evil came to our community that night, like so many other times for the members of the Special Situation Response Team, he left his family, he left the comfort and safety of his home and raised his hand and said, 'Here I am.'"

He called Heimann his friend, his brother in blue and his hero.

"... not because of how he fell, but how he lived to serve," Scheibler said. "I find assurance in Matthew 5:9. 'Blessed are the peacemakers because they will be called the children of God.'"

He called Heimann the ultimate peacemaker.

"God bless Scott, and may the example of his life bring peace to us all," Scheibler said.

Heimann, 32, was a 2012 graduate of TMP, the Catholic middle and high school in Hays. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Hays and was noted by many as a devout Catholic.

Fr. Fred Gatschet spoke to the mourners, "This evening we are going to acknowledge the hurt, the sense of loss, the grief, the anger, the frustration with the whole situation. As we go through the vigil tomorrow and the funeral, we will interject more hope and consolation."

Gatschet read Psalm 22, which was the Psalm that Jesus cited when he was on the cross.

The Psalm begins, "My God! My God! Why have you abandoned me? Why so far from my call for help, my cries of anguish?"

As the Psalm continues, it says, "but you, oh Lord, do not stay far off. My strength comes quickly to help me, deliver my soul from the sword."

He concluded by quoting St. Theresa of Avila, "Let nothing upset you. Let nothing startle you. All things pass. God does not change. Patience wins all that it seeks. Whoever has God lacks nothing. God alone is enough."

Mayor Sandy Jacobs called Heimann a brave soul who made the ultimate sacrifice.&nbsp;

"On behalf of the city, my fellow commissioners and city staff, we extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends and colleagues of the fallen officer, Sgt. Scott Heimann. His service and sacrifice serving our community will never be forgotten," she said.

"We stand united with our police department and the entire community as we navigate this really difficult time," she said.&nbsp;

She asked the community to keep all those affected in their thoughts and prayers.

"Scott Heimann was more than just a uniform. He was a protector, a neighbor, a friend, a husband and a father. He was someone who stood tall every day, not knowing what the shift might bring, but always showing up with courage and commitment."

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/259a0a4e-7e84-4de0-abd6-7a961ab84091">Heimann is survived by his wife,&nbsp;Beth, and a young son and daughter.</a>&nbsp;His parents and mother-in-law and father-in-law are also Hays residents.

Jacobs continued, "Tonight we hold these candles, not only to mourn and honor, to shine light in the darkness of loss and to say to family and the department and each other, 'You are not alone.'"

"To Scott's family, your pain is unimaginable, and no words can make it easier, but please know, Scott did not serve in vain.&nbsp;

"This city is safer, stronger and better because of his sacrifice. We are forever in his debt," she said.

"To all that are gathered here," Jacobs said, "May this night remind us of the power of unity, the strength of community and the enduring light of service and love."

The vigil was concluded with a song sung by TMP students, followed by a prayer led by Fr. Gatsche.

A visitation for Heimann will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at Gross Memorial Coliseum.

Scott Heimann said that his deep faith had been shaken in the wake of the <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/259a0a4e-7e84-4de0-abd6-7a961ab84091">Sunday killing in the line of duty of one of his officers</a>.He added he continued to find comfort in the word of God.Heimann served on the Hays Police Department since 2016, all of those years under the direction of Scheibler. He was serving as a patrol sergeant when he was killed, having recently been promoted.Mourners gathered Wednesday night at the Thomas More Prep-Marian grotto for a candlelight vigil for Heimann. Many of them were his peers dressed in uniform. The Kansas Highway Patrol offered a special escort for the family.<figure>

 </figure>"Scott was an amazing and talented man," Scheibler said. "He was kind and compassionate and caring in all that he did. Scott was so smart, so strong. He had an amazing sense of humor.&nbsp;"If Scott were here, he would tell you he was handsome too," Scheibler said, which brought giggles from the crowd.He said Heimann could have done anything in the world and been successful. He wanted to be a Hays Police officer."He wanted to stand on the wall and protect this community," Scheibler said. "I think it's important that you know that he wanted to protect you."He said this made him successful throughout his career. Scheibler said he was a strong leader and a mentor for the Hays Police Department.Scheibler said Heimann joked with him that he was keeping the seat warm for him, as Scott hoped to one day be the chief of the Hays Police Department."Scott impacted our community in so many ways," he said, "By reading books to children in the library, giving knuckle bumps as kids walked to school, wrestling drunks in the bar, to responding to the most dangerous threats in our community."<figure>

 </figure>Scheibler's voice began to waver, "During the last few days, as my thoughts dwell on Scott, I'm reminded of the Bible verse Isiah 6:8."And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, 'Whom should I send? Who will go for us?' And I said, 'Here I am.'""When evil came to our community that night, like so many other times for the members of the Special Situation Response Team, he left his family, he left the comfort and safety of his home and raised his hand and said, 'Here I am.'"He called Heimann his friend, his brother in blue and his hero."... not because of how he fell, but how he lived to serve," Scheibler said. "I find assurance in Matthew 5:9. Vigil: Community shaken by officer's death but blessed by 'ultimate peacemaker'

UPDATE: The annual Tootsie Roll Drive has been postponed to next weekend, Oct. 10-12.&nbsp;

It's time for the 55th annual drive for helping people with intellectual disabilities sponsored by the Knights of Columbus in Hays, Munjor, Catherine and Schoenchen.

On Friday through Sunday, Oct. 10-12, local Knights of Columbus members will hand out Tootsie Rolls in front of many Hays businesses.

Donations received during Tootsie Roll weekend will benefit the intellectually disabled as well as our citizens and our community.

Of the money collected, 80% stays in Hays and is given to local organizations that work with these special citizens. The balance of the money goes to our state "Commitment to Humanity" fund which helps finance projects like the Special Olympics.

Last year the Knights of Columbus underwrote the Kansas Knights of Columbus Special Olympics Basketball Tournament at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays with an amount of approximately $26,000.

Plan to attend the Special Olympics Basketball Tournament to be held March 20 and 21, 2026 in Hays. Last year there were more than 1,000 participants. The opening ceremonies are most impressive.&nbsp;

Knights of Columbus Tootsie Roll Drive moved to Oct. 10-12 in Hays

COLBY —&nbsp;Colby Community College posted the highest Full-Time Equivalency (FTE) enrollment increase among all public institutions in Kansas for fall 2025, according to preliminary enrollment reports from the Kansas Board of Regents.

Colby's FTE climbed 10.7% in one year, rising from 899 in fall 2024 to 995 this semester. FTE measures enrollment based on the number of credit hours taken rather than headcount alone. For example, one student taking 15 credit hours equals 1.0 FTE, while two part-time students taking seven and eight credit hours, respectively, also equal 1.0 FTE when combined.

 The state’s fall preliminary report is based on enrollment as of the 20th&nbsp;day of classes and does not include courses that begin later in the semester.

The increase marks not only strong short-term momentum but also long-term growth. 

Over the past five years, CCC has recorded a 16.2% rise in FTE, a significant achievement during a period when many Kansas colleges faced enrollment declines. Taking a longer perspective, the College has posted 12.3% FTE growth over the last decade, the highest among the state’s 19 community colleges.

"Our enrollment growth is a reflection of Colby Community College’s commitment to student success and community partnerships,” said CCC President Dr. Seth Carter. “We remain dedicated to offering high-quality, affordable, and accessible education to all of the students we serve.

With enrollment gains across one-year, five-year, and ten-year trends, CCC continues to strengthen its position as a resilient and forward-thinking institution in Kansas higher education.

In addition to more than ten years of private practice in Hays, Todd previously served as general counsel and executive assistant to the president of Fort Hays State University, practiced at the Topeka firm of Cavanaugh, Smith &amp; Lemon, P.A., and served as a research attorney for the Kansas Court of Appeals.

Altogether, Powell brings close to thirty years of legal experience in a wide range of areas, including personal injury and civil litigation, transactional law, contract law, employment and labor law, municipal and governmental entity law, divorce and family law, and appellate practice. 

In addition to his professional work, Powell is and has been involved in the community. He previously served on the Ellis County Economic Development Coalition, including as president of the board, has served on the board for the Hays Area Chamber of Commerce, and is a past president of the Hays Kiwanis Club.

Jeter Law Firm LLP adds attorney

Since spring, I’ve eyeballed milkweed plants growing in road ditches. Every time I spied one, I’d think of monarch butterflies searching for meals and nurseries to incubate eggs and nourish larvae. 

Eventually, I intended to harvest and plant seed pods to encourage more monarchs to flit amongst our flowers. Glory be, I remembered and now celebrate a bowl full of exploding milkweed fibers and seeds.

Nature and its symbiotic relationships fascinate me, none more than the one between monarch butterflies and the milkweed that graces prairies, roadsides, and open pastures across the mid-United States. Surprisingly, these 2- to 4-foot-tall perennials with globe-shaped leaves and pretty flowers manufacture toxins that drive most critters away. The monarch, however, evolved to utilize those chemicals as food and then internalize them to make themselves undesirable to prey.

For monarchs from the Rockies east, it starts with migration from mountains in Mexico as far as Canada each spring. Along that route, milkweed supports them with pinkish to lavender blooms and offers host plants where they lay pale, miniscule eggs on the underside of those round leaves.

Within days, those eggs hatch and scores of a favorite childhood literary character, "The Very Hungry Caterpillar", emerge. These bottomless pits eat only milkweed leaves. 

Due to a DNA mutation, their systems detoxify poisonous chemicals unique to this plant. Over an approximate two-week span, they eat, mature, and molt repeatedly, their colors continually intensifying. All this while they reprocess chemicals that will protect their butterfly incarnation.

 I plan to watch from a front row seat once my seeds develop enough to support this monarch stage of life.

Once a caterpillar achieves full size, it attaches to an object and forms a chrysalis. Inside that protective shell, miracles evolve in 10 to 14 days. The one-time caterpillar cells reconstitute themselves into a stunning black, orange, and white adult monarch toxic to prey.

Once wings harden so butterflies can flutter, these summer visitors flit from blossom to blossom feeding on nectar while pollinating plants. Though butterflies nourish themselves with various blooms, milkweed remains essential to monarch survival as a nursery host plant for egg laying, caterpillar food, and creating toxic wings.

Milkweed with its known cardiac glycosides is monarch larvae’s only food. During their development, that potent chemical cocktail collects in striped, pillowy caterpillar bodies—later becoming part and parcel of designer orange, black, and white wings as well as butterfly heads, thoraxes, and abdomens. 

When creatures up the food chain consume a monarch, they suffer anything from diarrhea to cardiac arrest. In the animal kingdom, devouring orange-winged insects is a no-no. Some species like the Viceroy evolved to mimic this protective coloring.

What a spectacular symbiotic match between a unique plant with exploding seed pods to monarchs that migrate across this milkweed-rich region twice a year! To utilize that toxin-laden plant as a protective nursery host to creatures immune to those poisons is science fiction on steroids. 

Double the amazement with the fact those chemicals accumulate and repurpose themselves in brilliant orange wings so predators know to avoid these pollinators. 

Design by the Master’s hand dazzles me every time I discover it. Here’s hope for even more milkweed seeds following this year’s planting.

RUSSELL — The 16th annual Bricks, Broncs, &amp; BBQ will be held on Friday, October 3 and Saturday,&nbsp;October 4, in Downtown Russell.

Hosted by Russell Main Street, Inc., this two-day&nbsp;festival has become one of Russell’s most anticipated annual gatherings, celebrating our&nbsp;community’s businesses, food, music, and culture while drawing visitors from across the region. Each year, this event helps bring energy and economic activity to the heart of Russell, and 2025&nbsp;promises to be one of the biggest yet.

While Bricks, Broncs, &amp; BBQ is packed with fun, food, and entertainment, the heart of the event&nbsp;runs deeper. Russell Main Street, Inc. hosts the festival as part of its mission to revitalize&nbsp;downtown Russell and keep it thriving as the hub of our community.

Proceeds from the event go directly back into downtown projects, small business support,&nbsp;beautification efforts, and creating events that bring people to Main Street.

Trunk or Treat at North Oak Community Church on Halloween

This fall, 14,682 students, including 9,146 Kansans, are enrolled at one of the three Fort Hays State University affiliated institutions. On-campus enrollment at FHSU grew by 2% over last year. Enrollment at Fort Hays Tech | North Central is up 6.9% in Hays and Beloit, and enrollment at Fort Hays Tech | Northwest in Goodland is up 3.5%.&nbsp;

According to the <a href="https://submission.kansasregents.gov/ibi_apps/portal/BIP_Public2/KHEStats">Kansas Board of Regents website</a>, total fall 2025 enrollment at FHSU in Hays is 12,849 students, down 0.2% from 12,878 students in fall 2024.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The five year change, according to the regents, is -12.5% fewer students.&nbsp;

Scott Cason, FHSU chief communications officer, told Hays Post the university's enrollment was down 88 international students and three online students from one year ago.&nbsp;

He said the university planned for the likely reduction in international students, especially on its China campuses. 

"It's attributed to things beyond our control," Cason said.&nbsp;

"The unmatched value of a Fort Hays educational experience continues to attract students who seek a high-quality education at an affordable price to our three institutions," said FHSU President&nbsp;Tisa&nbsp;Mason. "With the support of our state legislators, we are making investments in the future of Fort Hays that align with the goals set forth by the Kansas Board of Regents&nbsp;and&nbsp;our state's workforce needs."

Fall enrollment at the three Fort Hays schools at a glance

The fall 2025 enrollment count at Fort Hays State University, Kansas’ largest comprehensive regional public university, includes 1,096 first-time new undergraduate (non-transfer) students, an increase of more than 9% over last year, campus residence halls operating at full capacity, and a 5% increase in the number of Kansans enrolled at the university over the past two years.

Enrollment in academic programs that prepare graduates to work in critical-need professions grew again this fall. Undergraduate enrollment growth leaders in this category include Social Work at 23% over last fall, Allied Health (Medical Diagnostic Imaging, Medical Imaging, and Radiologic Technology), with an increase of 22%, and both Nursing and Applied Technology at 9% in enrollment growth.

Thanks to $15 million in funding from the Kansas Legislature, an expansion of Stroup Hall that is underway will bring the Departments of Nursing and Allied Health together under one roof, creating collaborative, state-of-the-art spaces for learning and training.&nbsp;

With the support of Senator Jerry Moran, the university secured&nbsp;an additional $3 million U.S. Department of Education grant to fund the advanced simulation labs, modern classrooms and realistic clinical environments necessary to ensure&nbsp;FHSU students receive hands-on training that mirrors real-world practice.

This expansion will provide the space necessary to meet an anticipated enrollment growth in nursing of more than 65% and medical diagnostic imaging programs of 40% over the next several years.&nbsp;

The Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science (KAMS/AMS), FHSU’s residential early college program for gifted high school juniors and seniors, saw enrollment growth of 6%, marking the third consecutive year of enrollment growth. &nbsp;

Overall enrollment at Fort Hays Tech | North Central in both Beloit and Hays this fall is 1,055, a 6.9% overall growth in enrollment over last fall. &nbsp;Enrollment markedly increased in several areas of critical workforce needs in our state, including Construction Technology and Electrical Technology at 39%, and Plumbing, Heating, and AC (PHAC) programs at 53%.

All three of these programs train professionals to fill critical workforce-need programs who will likely go on to live and work in Kansas. The Construction Career Center, scheduled to open in time for the 2026 spring semester, will serve as the new home for these three programs (and the Commercial Driver’s License program), and fuel future growth in these critical program areas.

"We’re thrilled that our enrollment continues to rise—an exciting reflection of the dedication and hard work of our faculty, staff, and admissions team, said Fort Hays Tech | North Central President Eric Burks. “The buzz around our new building is driving impressive growth in our construction programs, alongside continued momentum in online learning."

Fort Hays Tech | Northwest in Goodland experienced strong enrollment growth across multiple programs this year. Our Electrical Technology program has seen such high demand that an additional instructor was added, yet student interest still exceeded capacity, leading to a waitlist. 

Other programs are also on the rise: Child Care Specialist and Respiratory Care are both up 50%, Medical Assistant is up 66%, Cosmetology is up 24%, Computer Graphics Technology is up 23%, and Welding Technology is up 12%.

Early College enrollment has also increased. These opportunities give high school students a valuable head start— exploring career pathways and gaining real-world skills before graduation. 

Across all programs, students are choosing Fort Hays Tech | Northwest for its hands-on training, strong industry partnerships, and proven job placement outcomes.

"The increasing demand for graduates with technical skills in our region is making technical education a popular choice for high school students," said Dr. Corey Isbell, Fort Hays Tech | Northwest President.&nbsp;“Students and families are becoming more aware of the opportunities available to them on our campus, and this is driving our enrollment growth in several areas.”

FHSU, affiliated technical colleges release fall student enrollment numbers

TOPEKA — The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for the Ellis Co. RWD 1C public water supply system located in Ellis County.

 </figure>Kansas Department of Health and EnvironmentTOPEKA — The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for the Ellis Co. RWD 1C public water supply system located in Ellis County.This does not affect those customers who receive their water from the City of Hays.Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:<ul>
 <li>Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water.</li><li>Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker.</li><li>If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.</li><li>Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.</li><li>Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.</li>
 </ul>The advisory took effect on October 1, 2025 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE officials issued the advisory because of a loss of pressure due to maintenance in the distribution system.
