Separation of loads brought to the landfill for disposal

Ellis County Landfill Customers: We are reminding everyone (including residential customers, commercial contractors and roll-off service providers) to please have their loads separated into the following types of categories for proper disposal at the landfill:

Municipal Waste- Examples include household waste, garbage, yard waste, paper, fabric, microwave ovens, carpet & pad, mirrors, insulation, foam, and Plastic.

Construction and Demolition- Examples include shingles, drywall, masonry materials, toilets, wood, and non-friable asbestos.  Please note: Special provisions must be made in advance for non-friable asbestos.  It must be wet and covered to transport.

Trees-Woody-stemmed plants only.  The load must not contain dirt.  Root balls must be weighed and charged as construction & demolition and taken to the C&D pit. Pampas grass, pine needles, honeysuckle plants, and tumbleweeds are accepted at the tree pile as well. 

Items not accepted at tree pile- These items can be disposed of at the City of Hays compost site: Grass, Leaves (no branches) , Bamboo Stalks, Garden Waste, Straw, & Non-woody plant material.

Tires-One or two car tires are a minimum charge of $10.00. Three or more tires & all tires with rims will need to be weighed and charged accordingly by the prorated tonnage. Skid steer tires are to be taken to the tire pile.  Rubber tracks for equipment are to be taken to the transfer station and charged as municipal waste.

Clean Rubble- Such waste includes but is not limited to: Landscape rock w/minimal dirt, limestone, brick, clean concrete or concrete with steel mesh/rebar, masonry, and granite.

Household Hazardous Waste- must be placed in the designated storage container. These items include pesticides, herbicides, paint, stain, aerosol cans, antifreeze, fuels, acids, flammable chemicals, dangerous/poisonous chemicals, lead-acid/lithium batteries, etc...If you are unsure of any material, please call for assistance.
