· Lubricating wheel bearings to prevent excessive tire wear

· Replacing cabin, fuel, air &amp; oil filters as required

· Performing tire rotations to ensure even tire wear

· Testing tire pressure &amp; adding air as needed

· Making recommendations for additional servicing based on initial vehicle inspections.

Qualifications for our Oil &amp; Tire Technician positions:

· Ability to accurately document repairs

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State men's basketball announced the signing of Kyle Grill for the 2022-23 season. Grill is a 6-foot, 5-inch guard and is currently a senior at Maize High School in Maize, Kan. Grill was a KBCA All-State Second Team selection in Class 5A last year, helping his team to the Kansas Class 5A State Championship in 2020-21. He also received all-state accolades from the Topeka Capital-Journal and the Wichita Eagle. He was an All-Wichita Large School First Team selection by Vype and also an All-AVCTL First Team selection. Grill averaged 11.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game, while shooting 50 percent beyond the 3-point line, 58 percent overall, and 80 percent at the free-throw line during his junior season.&nbsp;&nbsp;

🏀 FHSU men announce signing of Kyle Grill for 2022-23

The Small Business Development Center, supported by our Robbins College of Business and Entrepreneurship, exists to increase economic prosperity in Kansas by helping entrepreneurs and small business owners start and grow their businesses. Headquartered in Topeka, the Kansas Small Business Development Centers throughout the state are funded through federal grants, local colleges and universities, and the state of Kansas. It is a system of 12 centers – several located on university campuses. All 12 centers are overseen by Fort Hays State University.

I recently visited with Rick Feltenberger, the director of the SBDC at Fort Hays State. I learned that as of August 2021, the state of Kansas started 174 fewer businesses than during all of 2020. This makes retaining critical infrastructure businesses (grocery stores, veterinary clinics, pharmacies, lumber/hardware stores, etc.) essential to economic prosperity. Rick also shared some information specific to businesses in rural Kansas, including:&nbsp;

• 50% of business owners are 51 or older.

• Only 30% of family-owned businesses successfully transition to the second generation.&nbsp;

• 20% plan on closing and conducting an orderly liquidation of assets.&nbsp;

Rick believes that one potential solution lies in careful business exit or succession planning. This process ensures business owners are fully prepared to transfer the single largest financial asset they have to a new owner, whether it be a family member or a third party. Rick cautions that many business owners confuse the successful transition of their business with the simple act of selling the business. A successful transition occurs on the owner’s terms, their timeline, and their price. It takes planning to get there. Focusing on “selling” doesn’t put the owner in a sound financial position.

Typical mistakes business owners make as they look toward exiting the business:

• Underestimating the amount of money required to meet their retirement or post-business lifestyle. Our heritage, work ethic, and upbringing in rural America make us unique. It also makes us very modest in our outlook. To maintain a retirement income of $30,000 per year requires a nest egg of about $750,000. If personal savings and investment can’t cover this, owners will need to maximize the net proceeds from their business.

• Assuming that their business will naturally be attractive to a potential buyer. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, and prospective buyers may evaluate the value of a business very differently than the current owner.&nbsp;

• Overestimating the actual value of their business. Valuing a business that is preparing for a transition is slightly complex, but the formula is very simple: Earnings x a market multiple factored for risk = Value. Earnings are the cash flow generated from the business. Market multiples are determined in the private equity markets, and every industry has a range of these multiples based on the relative risk level of the business. While owners can’t control the multiples, they absolutely can control where they land in that range of multiples by making their business less risky to a buyer. The lower the risk, the higher the multiple and the greater the value. It really is that simple.&nbsp;

Essential first steps in business succession planning

• Organize your financial reporting. This would include developing a personal financial statement, a detailed view of the owner’s assets and liabilities. The process isn’t difficult, and the owner’s financial planner or a certified exit planning advisor can usually help.

• Ensure your business financials are clean and accurate. The best way to do this is to have your accountant prepare income statements and balance sheets along with business tax returns for the past three years, plus detailed statements for the last 12 months.&nbsp;

• Communicate your intentions to your customers and potential buyers. The path to attracting a potential buyer can be tricky, so you will need a well-thought-out plan and a good team of advisors. The good news is that your buyer might be living in your community. The bad news is that no one will know that you are looking for a buyer unless you tell them. Forget the myths about losing customers or employees; it doesn’t happen if you properly communicate your intentions.&nbsp;

• Contact your local Economic Development Office and Chamber of Commerce. They may know of an interested person. If nothing else, they can quietly get the word out for you.&nbsp;

• Find an apprentice who would like to own your business. This isn’t a quick option as it could take two to three years to train an apprentice, often even longer. This is why it makes so much sense to start the process long before you face an event that requires you to leave the business.

HAYS, Kan. - Fort Hays State women's basketball head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=1043">Tony Hobson</a>&nbsp;has announced the signing of a pair of future Tigers that will join the squad in the fall of 2022. The incoming class of 2022 includes Brooke Loewe out of Ballard High School in Huxley, Iowa and Ellie Stearns from Andover Central High School in Andover, Kan.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Brooke Loewe 5-8 | Guard Huxley, Iowa | Ballard HS Brooke Loewe will be a four-year starter at Ballard High School in Huxley, Iowa. She was an Iowa Class 4A first team All-State selection as a junior after helping the Bombers win the 4A state championship. The 5-foot-8 guard was named to the 4A All-State Tournament team last spring during their run to the title. She is a three-time first team all-conference selection and has earned Class 4A all-region honors as a freshman, sophomore and junior. Loewe has helped the Bombers to three regional finals and two regional championships. She's averaged 10.8 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 3.4 steals per game through her high school career, totaling 755 points in 70 career games. Loewe also played soccer in her time at Ballard. Why did you choose to attend Fort Hays State? "I chose Fort Hays State because it was somewhere I could see myself for the next four years. 🏀 Tiger women sign two for 2022

The <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/e91cb584-b331-4870-b9e0-56540afb9dc2">reconstruction of West 27th Street</a> between Hall and Fort Streets will be halted as the weather turns colder, according to John Braun, Hays project director.

Work force availability and other factors kept the contractor, Paul-Wertenberger Construction of Hays, from completing the $2.4 million project by the original schedule date of November 17, Braun explained.&nbsp;

Designated as an arterial road, 27th is a busy three-lane street, carrying approximately 10,000 vehicles per day east and west across the city.

Traffic has been diverted from the area since <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/ac570a64-b3fd-4c58-9817-39cdd72de2b5">work started&nbsp;March 25</a>&nbsp;at Hall Street and continued east on 27th Street during the summer to about the area of Lincoln and Cottonwood Streets.

"The contractor will button things up for a winter shut-down," Braun said. "By the middle of next week, 27th Street will be reopened to unrestricted traffic and all adjacent residents will have full access to their properties.

"Construction will resume in the spring to finish out the rest of the project all the way to Fort Street."

"All the detour and construction signage, traffic cones and stuff will be removed," Braun said, "and the street will be opened for full traffic throughout the winter until a mutually agreed upon date will be determined to start back up and then finish the project."

The work is currently about two-thirds completed.

Adjacent residents have had to use the alleys to access their property.

"All the pavement is being removed and replaced, curb and gutter, sidewalks. So it's a full makeover of 27th," Braun said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Also included are new pavement markings, storm sewer improvements at Canal Boulevard and the area adjacent to Van Doren Pond, waterline improvements including abandonment of an old four-inch water main along Walnut from 23rd to 27th, and fire hydrants at Hillcrest, Cottonwood and Willow.

Golf tournament raises funds for DSNWK group homes

SHERMAN COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just after 8a.m. Wednesday in Sherman County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2007 Saturn Ion driven by Edgar Uriel&nbsp;Soto-Lara, 40, Goodland, was northbound on Kansas 27 eight miles north of Interstate 70.

The driver missed his turn, entered the east ditch and turned on to Kansas 27 to make a U-turn. The driver did not see a southbound&nbsp; 2020 Sterling semi driven by Fabian S. Ledesma, 50, Goodland.

The Sterling struck the Saturn, traveled off the road and overturned in the east ditch.

EMS transported both drivers to the hospital in Goodland. They were properly restrained, according to the KHP .

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment on Wednesday reported 31 new COVID-19 cases in Ellis County had been identified since Monday.

As of Wednesday morning, HaysMed reported 17 COVID-19 inpatients, up from 15 on Monday.

The KDHE reported Wednesday 53 percent of eligible Ellis County residents are fully vaccinated, noting the vaccination rate for the eligible Kansas population (12 and older) is approximately 64 percent.

Since reporting began, there have been 4,748 cases of COVID-19 identified in Ellis County, including 76 coronavirus-related deaths.

Governor Laura Kelly: An open letter to Kansas communities

A small earthquake was detected in northwest Russell County on Tuesday evening, according to the Kansas Geological Survey.

The 2.2-magnitude quake was recorded at 7:36 p.m. Tuesday in the far northwest corner of the county.

Also Tuesday, a 2.3-magnitude quake was reported at 11:32 a.m. in northeast Smith County.

The finishing touches were added to the latest downtown mural this week — a depiction of individuals with disabilities on the front of the Arc Thrift Store building, 600 Main.

The mural was painted by local artist Dennis Schiel. He is a prolific mural painter, having also created the mural on the side of the Fox Theatre, S&amp;W Supply on Eight Street and the Hays VFW, along with with many other projects in communities outside of Hays.

The Arc sponsored the mural with funds they would have used for programming in 2020, but all of the out-of-town activities for the Arc participants were canceled because of COVID.

Sarah Meitner, Arc president, said the Arc board had been thinking about a mural for some time. They wanted to bring awareness to people with disabilities in the community.

She said she wanted the community to understand individuals with disabilities want to belong, have fun and celebrate their successes. Arc activities allow the individuals to be with friends, be a part of something and be proud of something, she said.

This is the third mural in what local officials hope will be eight to 10 downtown murals in two years. The project has been dubbed <a href="https://www.facebook.com/brushthebricks/">Brush the Bricks</a>.

Schiel's current work on the Arc building depicts individuals with disabilities involved in Arc-sponsored activities, including Special Olympics. Although he used local athletes for his inspiration, no local indvidual's face will be depicted in the mural. Local officials didn't want any of the individuals in the Arc program to feel left out, Schiel said.

"It's a heck of a program as far as I'm concerned," Schiel said. "I didn't realize they did as much as they do. The Arc is pretty amazing."

Among the athletes that are depicted are a basketball player, a blind baseball player, track athletes, a cheerleader in a wheelchair. A bingo player and dancers are also featured. These are activities also sponsored by the Arc.

This will be the last mural for the Brush the Bricks project finished this year. However, Schiel will assist with a community mural on the Midland Marketing building next year. A red dragon is planned for the side of the Sake2Me building to pay homage to Sister City Chinese connection with Hays.

Schiel will also paint a mural on the building in the 100 block of East 11th Street. The exact content of that mural has yet to be determined.

"It's going to be lots of color and lots of flowers," he said. "I'm not sure what all is going into that one, but that one will be fun."

The project will also be working on stretch banners that will highlight the art of sculptor Pete Felton and John Cody, who was known for his paintings of moths.

UPDATE: Indviduals with disabilities featured in Arc mural

TOPEKA&nbsp;– Gov. Laura Kelly this week congratulated Roger Hrabe, Rooks County Economic Development Director, on receiving the Governor’s Tourism Award. The governor announced the prestigious award during the annual Kansas Tourism Conference in Liberal.

“Our tourism industry supports Kansas jobs, injects millions into our economy, and preserves our state’s unique history for future generations – but its success wouldn’t be possible without talented Kansans like Roger Hrabe,” Kelly said. “Roger truly understands the connection between tourism and developing a thriving community, and his work has gone above and beyond for the people of Rooks County. Congratulations, Roger, on this well-deserved recognition.”

Kelly cited Hrabe’s many accomplishments, including his part in developing and constructing informational tourism kiosks along Solomon Valley Highway 24, during the award ceremony. Hrabe also played a critical role in developing the Rooks County Regional Airport, which boosts the local economy by allowing visitors to stop and fuel their planes; encourages more overnight stays in the county; hosts airplane tour groups; and makes it easier for doctors to fly in and serve the local hospital.

The Governor’s Tourism Award was established in 1983 to recognize Kansans for outstanding contributions to the Kansas travel and tourism&nbsp;industry. This annual award is presented to an individual or organization that demonstrates cooperation, sustainability, quality and accountability in their support of the overall growth of tourism in Kansas.

Lieutenant Governor and Commerce Secretary David Toland personally presented Hrabe with the award during the 2021 Kansas Tourism Conference, which led to a standing ovation from the audience.

“Roger’s commitment to making his community a better place truly is inspirational,” Toland said.&nbsp;“He has been thoughtful, innovative and selfless in finding ways to strengthen local travel and tourism opportunities as part of his economic development strategies. Roger’s hard work speaks for itself, and his community and region are better off because of his tireless efforts.”

“I am both appreciative and humbled to receive this award,”&nbsp;Hrabe said.&nbsp;“There are so many tourism professionals around the state who do a much better job than I do.&nbsp;I am grateful for their help and support.”

Rooks Co. official named winner of Governor's Tourism Award

RUSSELL — Opening reception of Roaming House: A Journey Home at the Deines Cultural Center from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday from 5-7 p.m. for Joey Embers.

In 2001, Joey Embers, a Kansas native from McPherson County, received a BA in studio art from Bethany College. It’s during this time that Joey found passion for learning and a strong sense of identity with a paint brush in hand and usually a charcoal-smeared face.

The paintings in this show come from a larger body of work called&nbsp;A Roaming House, a journey home&nbsp;that was started in 2014.&nbsp; The series depicts a house suspended in an endless shifting landscape of time and emotions. Using bold vibrant colors and a wide range of marks Joey leads the viewer on a journey through a surreal mindscape. The composition of each painting starts to reveal a dialogue between each of them. If you change the order and the relationships of the paintings, they will tell a different story.

Joey’s exhibition of paintings will be in the Deines Gallery from November 19 to January 5.

The Deines is located in Russell at 820 N. Main Street and is open 12-5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and Saturday and Sunday 1-5 p.m.

It’s during this time that Joey found passion for learning and a strong sense of identity with a paint brush in hand and usually a charcoal-smeared face.The paintings in this show come from a larger body of work called&nbsp;A Roaming House, a journey home&nbsp;that was started in 2014.&nbsp; The series depicts a house suspended in an endless shifting landscape of time and emotions. 'Roaming House: A Journey Home' set to open in Russell

BY GLENN BRUNKOW Pottawatomie County farmer and rancher In a few short days we will all sit down and celebrate Thanksgiving. The holiday that is meant for us to reflect and decide what it is for which we are thankful. We have a lot to be thankful for in this great nation, not the least of which is our farms and ranches. This is so appropriate because Thanksgiving is associated with food. My guess is most of us will have the traditional feast of turkey and all the fixings, right down to the pumpkin pie. No matter what you include for your Thanksgiving dinner, without a doubt it will be one of biggest feasts of the year. All of this great food is brought to you by a fellow farmer or rancher, even the yams. While I do not know any yam farmers and, to be honest, I am not even sure what a yam is. I do know the people who grow them are good. Those of us involved in agriculture are part of the fabric that is the foundation of this great nation. At the core of every great society is a robust, self-sufficient food supply. We are so blessed in the United States to have the safe, abundant, wholesome food supply within easy reach.. Most of us have never really faced empty shelves. Sure, there are times like right before a predicted snowstorm the shelves may be a little low. But very few of us have ever faced a real shortage of food. We got a little glimpse of this during the pandemic, but any deficits were short lived. We are also fortunate to spend a relatively small portion of our earnings on food. We are used to having the shelves full and the prices at a reasonable level and that is all because of the hard work we put in as farmers and ranchers. The price of this year’s Thanksgiving dinner has undoubtedly gone up because of inflation. But it is still a feast that comes at an amazing bargain, and one we do not take enough credit for. This coming week is when we, as farmers and ranchers, should be sticking our chests out with pride and letting the world know about the remarkable things we do to put food on tables around the world.. This is true every day but especially the day when we are to give thanks, and our way of giving thanks is centered around a great meal. See what I mean about food being at the center of our society? We have a lot to be thankful for in this great nation, but at the top of that list is our food supply. It is OK to take pride in the fact that all of us do our part to provide the safe, abundant, wholesome food we all need. That is also something to be thankful for, and I wish you all the happiest of Thanksgivings.

Annual Kiwanis poinsettia fundraiser deadline in Nov. 18

Candidate Cathy Hopkins has called for a recount in the Hays USD 489 school board race.

Only the top three vote-getters in the race will earn seats on the school board. Hopkins placed fourth behind Meagan Zampieri-Lillpopp by five votes after the canvass Monday.

"I just felt compelled with only five votes that it wouldn't hurt to have another look," Hopkins said. 

Hopkins said she sought out Zampieri-Lillpopp in person to tell her that she planned to request a recount. She said they were on the same page.

"It just seems to make sense when it's so close," Hopkins said.

Zampieri-Lillpopp said she thought requesting a recount is Hopkins' right as a candidate.

"I don't think verifying it is any problem. It's a democracy. That's how things work," she said. ...

"I put my name out there to serve, and that's what I will do if that's what people want."

Any candidate can request a recount regardless of the votes they received, said Ellis County Clerk Bobbi Dreiling. She is planning to start the recount 7 a.m. Friday and anticipated it will take eight to nine hours.

Hopkins has requested the ballots be rescanned through the optical scanner. A Republican and Democrat will take turns feeding single paper ballots through the scanner.

Members of the public will be allowed to watch the recount. Dreiling asked that people remain quiet during the procedure. 

The recount will not affect any other race in the county.

Dreiling is trying to reconvene the canvass board early next week to re-certify the USD 489 race.

Hopkins calls for recount in Hays USD 489 school board race

After serving as the county’s top health official through
the height off the COVID-19 pandemic, Ellis County Health Services Director
Jason Kennedy stepped down from his post Monday. 

Kennedy took over the position of Health Services Director
in December 2019 when then Health Services Director Kerry McCue retired.

Shorty before, the county commission elected to combine
the Health and Emergency Medical Services into one department.

At Monday’s commission meeting, Kennedy thanked the community
and the commission.

“This is a great community, a phenomenal community (and) I
look forward to serving it in a different capacity,” Kennedy said. “I am truly
thankful for the time I’ve had hear and for that working relationship with you
guys.”

Commission Chair Butch Schlyer said in a statement Monday
that Kennedy has done a “phenomenal job with us at Ellis County and has made
many improvements to both departments he served as the director and has taken
the lead role in Ellis County during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Five months after Kennedy took over the position, the first case
of coronavirus was confirmed in Ellis County. He also served as the county public
health officer and Kennedy will continue to serve in that role until the spring.

“To ensure our citizens get a consistent public health voice
from Ellis County as we hopefully move to the end of pandemic,” Schlyer said. 

Kennedy also addressed the pandemic Monday.

“This has not exactly been the easiest two years for anybody
in this community and I appreciate the support (and) the dedication of you
guys.” Kennedy said. “We have been able to walk through this pandemic together without
a lot of the issues that we have seen around our state and our nation.”

Kennedy will help with the transition at the EMS until
Nov. 26 and, at that time, Danita Schroeder will take over as the interim
department head.

Kim Reel was named the interim head of the health department.
Kennedy will help with the transition until Dec. 10.

 </figure>By BECKY KISER Hays PostA record high temperature was set in Hays Monday.The mercury soared to 80 degrees yesterday.According to official records at the K-State Agricultural Research Center, the previous high temperature on November 15 in Hays was 78 degrees, set in 1952.One year ago the daytime high was a more seasonable 64 degrees.A dramatic drop in temperature is forecast beginning Wednesday with highs in the upper 40s and low 50s.
