On average, 90 percent of poisonings happen in homes in America each year, and nearly 70 percent of people who call Poison Help get the help they need right where they are—saving the cost of a trip to a healthcare professional or hospital.

Not everyone realizes that Poison Centers are for everyone. While poison centers get a lot of calls about children, calls about teens, adults and older adults tend to be more serious. 

More than 60 percent of calls to the Kansas Poison Center in 2024 involved medicines or pharmaceuticals. However, other common poisons include household products, plants, mushrooms, pesticides, animal bites and stings, carbon monoxide and many other types of nonpharmaceutical substances.

Three-day weather outlook

The City of Hays is notifying residents of delays in generating monthly water bills due to a technical issue impacting a third-party data service provider.

The issue, which originated outside city control, has temporarily affected the city's internal billing processes.

According to Director of Finance Kim Rupp, the city was first notified of the issue by their external service provider last week.

The vendor handles data services critical to the city's ability to create and distribute monthly water billing statements.

“The problem arose unexpectedly with our vendor’s internal systems, which has prevented us from generating water bills on schedule this month,” Rupp said. “We’re in continuous communication with the vendor, and they've assured us they are working urgently toward a solution.”

City officials emphasized that while they expect a resolution soon, no exact timeline can currently be guaranteed.

The vendor continues efforts to rectify the technical malfunction and has indicated significant progress, but the precise completion date remains uncertain.

“Unfortunately, the nature of this issue means our hands are tied until our vendor completes their repairs,” Rupp said. “We appreciate our residents’ patience and understanding as we work through this unexpected situation.”

Residents may have already noticed their water bills did not arrive at their usual time this month.

The city typically sends out billing statements regularly throughout the month, and the current delay has impacted a significant number of accounts.

Rupp noted that while new bills cannot currently be generated or paid, residents who previously received their bills can still make payments using regular methods, including online, mail, or in-person options.

“The issue does not affect bills already sent out prior to this issue,” Rupp said. “If you have an existing bill, please continue to pay that bill normally.”

The City Clerk’s Office and Finance Department will resume processing and mailing of new water bills immediately upon restoration of the vendor’s services.

Once residents receive their delayed billing statements, they can pay using the standard payment methods without additional steps required.

City officials expressed regret for any inconvenience this issue may cause and remain committed to keeping residents informed of any updates regarding the timeline and resolution.

“We sincerely apologize to our residents for this disruption in our normal billing processes,” Rupp said. “This issue highlights our reliance on certain external providers and the impact these unforeseen events can have. We remain committed to providing timely information as we receive updates from the vendor.”

Ellinwood Hospital & Clinic to be featured on SHPBS 'Doctors on Call'

 Brothers John and Nate Egan remember all too well what it was like to be students with big dreams. As recent Fort Hays State University graduates, the brothers say FHSU had a profound impact on them. So much so that the 26 and 22-year-old brothers have already created a scholarship for students like them, chasing the same early success they’ve had since graduating.

Now based in Missouri, John is a marketing representative in the commercial and life insurance field. He loves every minute of interacting with customers and helping them meet their individual needs. He landed the job through one of his peers at Fort Hays State. The experiences he gained at FHSU and time spent in the Finance Club with his brother, Nate, inspired him to take the leap into creating a scholarship to help others with the same interests.

“We felt very blessed that we were able to graduate with no debt due to scholarship support,” John said. “We were both able to land good jobs thanks to our education at FHSU, and we decided to give back because we wouldn’t be here without Fort Hays State.”

Hearing John’s decision to start a scholarship encouraged Nate to join him. Nate was incredibly involved on campus, participating in Alpha Kappa Psi, Economics Club, Finance Club, Catholic Disciples, and as a Robbins College Ambassador with John. 

Culminating in his position as a financial analyst in Chicago, Nate felt the same gratitude as John for the opportunities at Fort Hays State University that led him to where he is today.

“The conversations I had with my professors about how to prepare for the adult world allowed me to hop in and succeed right away,” Nate said.

Each year, the brothers hope to make an even bigger contribution to help as many students as possible. The Egans’ story is only one example of how giving back can transform lives at Fort Hays State.

Get ready for a splash of color, as paintball may be the next big thrill in Ellis County.

Imagine Ellis County hosted its first Think-Tank Throwdown Thursday in downtown Hays to explore opportunities to improve the county.

Ellis County residents pitched their ideas to a panel of judges for a chance to bring their visions to life. Leigh Purdy earned first place and secured a contract with Imagine Ellis County to carry out her project in memory of a former classmate.

"Hays is famous for disc golf. Let's make it famous for paintball, too," Purdy said.

Purdy proposed the Cody Joseph Younger Memorial Paintball Park. Similar to a skate park, it would be a free, bring-your-own-gear facility to provide local youth and families with safe and exciting outdoor recreation.

Preliminary location ideas for the 0.5 to 1-acre facility included Elizabeth Polly Park and Daniel G. Rupp Memorial Park in Hays. However, Purdy said she is open to placing it in other Ellis County communities.

The youth and activity center would promote teamwork, strategy and physical activity through paintball games like capture the flag, team deathmatch, king of the hill and battle royale.

Purdy said the facility could also offer options for airsoft, laser tag and Nerf guns.

"This would encourage teamwork and strategy," she said.

Purdy detailed the costs and materials in her presentation, saying the project would stay within a $2,500 to $5,000 budget. She hopes to secure donated materials as well.

Materials include plastic culverts, rain barrels, wooden spools, sandbags, tires and concrete barriers.

Purdy said the Hays Park Department could provide maintenance assistance, with volunteers and local service clubs also participating.

Purdy said there is a regional demand for this type of youth entertainment, which has the potential to engage local businesses and boost tourism.

With the nearest paintball park 90 miles away in Assaria, Purdy said there's a regional demand for this type of youth entertainment. She highlighted the potential to generate local business engagement and boost tourism.

"I love the opportunity to honor my late friend and bring something really cool to Ellis County. Thank you for allowing us this opportunity," she said.

Anthony Hurla proposed a nonprofit recreational facility focusing on a paintball course. The long-term vision is to expand into a full-scale activity center featuring go-karts, laser tag, roller hockey and rock climbing.

Hurla's plan is to start with a low-impact paintball park, which he described as the most cost-effective option for kids and adults,  offering an affordable, accessible and alcohol-free environment.

According to James Robben, Grow Hays' director of business development and special projects, Hurla and Purdy will work together due to their similar ideas.

Hurla’s proposal also suggested using profits to support road repairs, building improvements and other needs in Ellis County. He placed second in the competition.

Other ideas presented at the Think-Tank Throwdown included a vending ice machine at the Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex, an organic greenhouse and affordable tiny homes to help address the housing shortage.

The remaining participants will be connected with community members who can help develop their projects. Grow Hays intern Elizabeth Noble led the Think-Tank Throwdown, which was judged by a panel of three.

Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas

Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas is excited to welcome Alli Puetz, a master of social work student at the University of Saint Mary, as a summer counseling intern serving the Manhattan community and the Diocese of Salina.

Alli is now accepting new clients for in-person counseling in Manhattan and teletherapy sessions for individuals across the Diocese of Salina. 

Her availability begins May 12 and continues through the end of July, with immediate openings for children (ages 10+), teens, adults, couples, and families.

Originally from the Wichita area, Puetz completed her undergraduate degree at Kansas State University and is actively involved at St. Isidore’s Catholic Student Center. She is passionate about providing hope and healing through compassionate care.

Puetz will provide counseling services under the clinical supervision of Jessica Sampson, LSCSW, Director of Family Support Services at Catholic Charities. Jessica has more than 13 years of experience with the organization and is a licensed specialist in clinical social work.

“We’re really grateful to have Alli with us this summer,” said Megan Robl, executive director of Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas. “Her presence helps us expand access to affordable, compassionate mental health care for families across our diocese. We know how busy providers are right now, and we also know how critical it is to offer quality support for those who are struggling. Alli allows us to meet more of those needs, and we’re excited for what this summer will bring.”

Counseling through Catholic Charities is available to all individuals regardless of religion, race, age, or financial status. Services are confidential and offered either in person at one of the agency’s office locations or via teletherapy through a secure online platform, based on client preference.

TREGO COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 8p.m. Monday in Trego County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2011 Honda Accord driven by Jose S.&nbsp;Bonilla, 50, Albuquerque, New Mexico,&nbsp;was eastbound on I Road at 240 Avenue one quarter mile west of WaKeeney. The driver&nbsp; began negotiating a curve as the car traveled left off the roadway into the north ditch. The driver overcorrected and traveled back across the roadway and the car rolled into the south ditch.

EMS transported Bonilla to&nbsp;Trego County-Lemke Memorial Hospital. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Driver hospitalized after car rolls into NW Kansas ditch

A classic case of good versus evil is coming to the FHSU campus this month.

"Jekyll &amp; Hyde," the 1990 musical based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 novella, will run April 11 and 12 at 7:30 p.m. and April 13 at 2:30 p.m. in FHSU’s Felten-Start Theatre. The cast of 22 actors/singers and 18 orchestra pit members has been rehearsing since early February.

“It is a complex show, but fun with great music,” said Dr. Terry Crull, professor of music and director of Jekyll &amp; Hyde. “The music is the highlight of the show.”

The storyline of Jekyll &amp; Hyde will be familiar to film, literature, and theatre buffs. 

It follows the unfortunate life choices of Dr. Henry Jekyll, who wishes to develop a formula to cure his comatose father. Jekyll’s proposal to use a human subject (his father) to research the formula is rejected by his hospital’s board of directors.

After testing the formula on himself, Jekyll undergoes a painful transformation into Mr. Hyde, a sinister, violent man. The show contains some mature content and is recommended for ages 13 plus.

Much of the music will be familiar to those who enjoy musical theatre. Songs such as “This is the Moment,” “Someone Like You,” and “Once Upon a Dream” are just a few examples.

The show poses many new production challenges for Carl Sage, assistant professor of theatre, who is tasked with making the story come to life through his set design.

 It will be the first time a projection system will be used to create large background scenes. The projection system eliminates the need for big flats that drop onto the stage.

“Whatever you do on stage must be conducive to storytelling,” Sage said. “It can be a challenge, especially for some of the more skill-heavy situations, like programming the light board, which can take hours or days to program. It’s a process. You can’t make things happen instantly.”

Crull said he is anxious to see how the sets come together. “It will be very exciting,” he said.

Main cast members include Garrett Cole, Hays, as Jekyll and Hyde; Allie Straub, Hays, as Lucy Harris; McKynlee Stecklein, Hays, as Emma Carew, Jekyll’s fiancée; and Quinton McGuire, Hays, as John Utterson, Jekyll’s friend and confidant.

Classic good vs. evil coming to FHSU April 11-13

Imagine the years of the Dust Bowl and Depression in western Kansas--hard times for the toughest. Residents in Trego County with a little cash could escape in their local theatre. Owner C. B. Kelly made sure his patrons got their money’s worth when they attended movies.

When Kelly rebuilt the theatre, he included heating and cooling systems in its basement so audiences could watch in comfort any time of the year. By 1936, he added a new “washed cooling system.” Based on the description, it may have worked like an evaporative cooler with the local newspaper reporting in the summer of ‘36, “The system had a good workout and keeps temperatures at a low point.”

In addition to regularly updating business infrastructure and adding a marquee in 1936, Kelly invited vaudeville acts to perform during intermissions between his popular Hollywood productions. In the early '30s, Kansan Milburn Stone (later Gunsmoke’s Doc Adams) performed a vaudeville act in the Kelly Theatre with his partner--one-time WaKeeney resident J.O. Strain.

Not only did Kelly hire vaudeville performers to attract crowds, CB encouraged locals to share talent, which resulted in a series of short movies about Trego County life. 

By the late 1930s, one of Kelly’s employees, Avon Gregg accessed a home movie camera. Kelly encouraged him to film current events in the area which were screened along with professional films. 

One production involved Richard Owen’s family near Voda celebrating a 50th wedding anniversary. Gregg also snapped and shared candid street scenes. Another film documented building a bridge over the Smoky Hill south of Voda. One more captured footage of Chas Phillips and Roy Parsons displaying large fish from Seattle while another revealed a local business unloading oranges. The movie of fireman fighting Clifton Brown’s garage fire on Julia Marshall’s property undoubtedly had the crowd holding their breath in alarm. (If anyone has these films, please share them with Trego County Historical Society so they can be digitized and saved.)

A rabbit drive on the Hille Farm southwest of WaKeeney received considerable publicity. According to the Western Kansas World, a crowd of 7,000 from the area and eastern parts of Kansas participated. CB’s employee capitalized and filmed it. According to the Feb. 14, 1935 Western Kansas World, Kelly showed these at the “Kelly Theatre each night for the balance of the week in connection with the rest of the show.”

In addition to showcasing local films, Kelly hired performers such as Buck Owens and his Cowboy Movie Band, The Dixie Ramblers, and “Rita Ty Bel--Hollywood’s Famous Lady Double Actress” to accompany features such as "Storm Over Bengal." His efforts kept his theatre open.

Many consider rabbit drives a sign of hard times. In 1939, Kelly responded with a reduction in admission rates. He dropped Saturday night movie fees to 10 cents each for adults and children. Tuesday and Wednesday attendance required 25 cents for two. No mention appeared regarding Kelly reducing staff, but a July article referenced that CB now “devoted his entire time to the Kelly Theatre and quit managing the Staatz Hotel.”

Though local families struggled throughout the Depression, CB Kelly made certain that the WaKeeney region could forget their troubles at his theatre. 

As a bonus, he encouraged local talent to document residents’ lives and share those films. What a thrill to attend movies and see yourself on screen.

Residents in Trego County with a little cash could escape in their local theatre. Owner C. B. Kelly made sure his patrons got their money’s worth when they attended movies.When Kelly rebuilt the theatre, he included heating and cooling systems in its basement so audiences could watch in comfort any time of the year. By 1936, he added a new “washed cooling system.” Based on the description, it may have worked like an evaporative cooler with the local newspaper reporting in the summer of ‘36, “The system had a good workout and keeps temperatures at a low point.”In addition to regularly updating business infrastructure and adding a marquee in 1936, Kelly invited vaudeville acts to perform during intermissions between his popular Hollywood productions. In the early '30s, Kansan Milburn Stone (later Gunsmoke’s Doc Adams) performed a vaudeville act in the Kelly Theatre with his partner--one-time WaKeeney resident J.O. Strain.Not only did Kelly hire vaudeville performers to attract crowds, CB encouraged locals to share talent, which resulted in a series of short movies about Trego County life. By the late 1930s, one of Kelly’s employees, Avon Gregg accessed a home movie camera. Kelly encouraged him to film current events in the area which were screened along with professional films. One production involved Richard Owen’s family near Voda celebrating a 50th wedding anniversary. Gregg also snapped and shared candid street scenes. Another film documented building a bridge over the Smoky Hill south of Voda. One more captured footage of Chas Phillips and Roy Parsons displaying large fish from Seattle while another revealed a local business unloading oranges. The movie of fireman fighting Clifton Brown’s garage fire on Julia Marshall’s property undoubtedly had the crowd holding their breath in alarm. Between tariff uncertainty and a big Saudi price cut, the crude oil market takes a beating.&nbsp; NYMEX futures prices shed five dollars a barrel on Friday to settle a penny below $62. Prices were down another three percent Monday morning. WTI was fetching a few cents over $60 a barrel after dipping below $59 earlier in the session.&nbsp; Kansas Crude prices dropped five dollars Friday. Kansas Common crude at CHS in McPherson starts the week at 52.25 per barrel.

Saudi Arabia slashed its prices by more than two dollars a barrel, dropping prices for Asia customers to a four-year low.&nbsp; Reuters reports the second monthly price cut in a row marks the biggest decline in two years.

Eight key OPEC+ producers last week agreed to raise combined crude oil output by 411,000 barrels per day, what the cartel calls the equivalent of three monthly increments.

Kansas crude production has dropped from the worst ever to the new worst ever, again. The data crunchers at the Kansas Geological Survey (KGS) have been busy with what a spokesman called "significant changes in their server architecture." This week they released the delayed and much-anticipated December and year-end crude oil production totals. The new report shows annual statewide production of 26.8 million barrels, the worst annual total in KGS records, for an average of 73,306 barrels per day. That's down from just under 76-thousand barrels a day the year before and 77-thousand-plus the year before that.

KGS reports Ellis County is still the top producing county in 2024, with 5,668 barrels per day. That's down 213 daily barrels from the year before. Finney County production jumps to the second spot with 4,405 barrels per day, up 605 daily barrels. After Haskell County at third comes Barton County at 3,847 barrels per day, down 233 barrels a day from the year before. At fifth, Russell County output dropped 87 daily barrels year-over-year, at 3,507. Stafford County drops 62 daily barrels to eighth place with 2,391 barrels per day.

Kansas regulators report 83 new intent-to-drill notices in March, or 202 so far this year. A search of the Kansas Corporation Commission Web site shows Barton County with two new intents, and four so far this year. Ellis County has a new one. That's makes two for the first three months of the year. Russell County notches its first of the year, and Stafford County adds one, for a year-to-date tally of seven. Haskell County reports five new intents or seven through the first quarter. Finney County has 17 so far this year, with five new ones in March.

The Kansas Corporation Commission okayed 26 new drilling sites, with 12 in Western Kansas including one in Stafford County. That's 199 new drilling permits this year, compared to 232 through the first quarter last year.

Independent Oil and Gas Service reports 47 new well completions in eastern Kansas last week. There were just six west of Wichita, including three in Haskell County and one in Stafford County. Completions for the first quarter total 347, compared to 301 last year at this time.

US crude production boasts its third-best weekly average, it's second-best four-week average, and all-time best cumulative average. US crude production through March 28th averaged 13.58 million barrels a day, up six thousand barrels from the week before and nearly half a million higher than the same tally a year ago.

The Energy Information Administration reports crude inventories rose 6.2 million barrels from last week to 439.8 million barrels. Stockpiles are down nearly three percent from a year ago, and are about four percent below the five-year seasonal average.

The Energy Department took delivery on another 300-thousand barrels of crude last week for the Strategic Petroleum Reserves. That's 32.8 million since full-scale refill operations began last April. SPR barrels were sold in 2022 for more than $95 a barrel. The average price we're paying remains below the ceiling established by the government. Paper savings now total over $490 million.

Crude imports from Canada rose for the second week in a row, but the tally for the month of March is the lowest since October. US refiners imported 4.4 million barrels of Canadian crude per day last week.

Total US imports averaged 6.5 million barrels per day, rising 271-thousand barrels from the previous week. EIA says crude exports averaged 3.8 million barrels a day, making the US is a net crude importer by two-and-a-half million barrels a day.

The Kansas Rig Count totals were unchanged from a week ago, with eight active rigs east of Wichita and 15 in Western Kansas. Independent Oil and Gas Service reports drilling underway or about to resume barring weather delays on a lease in Barton County, two in Finney County, one in Russell County and one in Stafford County.

Baker Hughes reports 590 active drilling rigs across the U.S. The number of oil rigs is up five. The tally of those seeking natural gas is down seven rigs. Texas is down three rigs for the week.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Hays USD 489 school board will consider purchasing furniture for the new high school building at its meeting at 6:30 tonight at the Rockwell Administration Center.

The board is asking to approve purchases not to exceed $1 million&nbsp;from Circadia.

The board will also be asked to approve the purchase of flat panel displays from KCAV for $127,812 for the new Hays High building.

The board will discuss school fees for the 2025-26 school year. The list of fees was not included in the public board packet.

The board will also hear reports from the district's librarians and an update on the district's new vehicle fleet program.

Democrats took to the streets of Hays to protest the Trump administration’s grip on small organizations and the broader economy.

Local Democrats had a Saturday rally called "Hands OFF!" as part of a nationwide movement. Chairwoman of the Ellis County Democratic Party, Anna Towns, said it was an effort to show that rural areas are impacted.

"I had a few people that wanted to be involved but couldn't go to Topeka," Towns said. "We talked about how it's important in our local community to stand up for these issues, show our friends and neighbors that there are real Kansas who are impacted by these things."

The protest challenged federal policies under the Trump administration and Elon Musk, particularly opposing cuts to public services for the benefit of billionaires.

The Facebook event for the gathering stated President Donald Trump and Elon Musk are taking everything they can, including health care, data, jobs, and services, calling it a 'crisis.'

Event organizer Anniston Weber said a similar protest was taking place in Salina, adding the demonstration's aim was to make progressive voices more visible throughout the region.

"We live in a very rural and conservative area. I think it's important to remind people who are less conservative or more progressive that there are people here they can find kinship in and safety with," Weber said.

Weber said national issues often reach the local level, as federal funding cuts by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) have affected nearby organizations.

Weber, who works in the local nonprofit sector, said organizations have been forced to adjust their operations amid federal funding confusion and financial concerns.

"Just because we're a small town doesn't mean that our voices aren't important," Weber said.

Towns said federal policy changes have led to job losses and disruptions for Ellis County residents, particularly in nonprofit work and agricultural research positions.

"I do know that there are people who are involved in our group and people who have spoken to me personally who were part of the rounds of layoffs," she said.

Towns and Weber urged people to stay informed, contact their representatives and legislators, speak up on key issues and help create meaningful change.

More than 75 people attended the protest on a cold and windy afternoon. Weber noted a wider range of participants than the February demonstration, which focused on deportation efforts under the Trump administration.

"Not everybody loves to see a group of progressives standing on the side of the road. I know that it's annoying and people don't want to see people who disagree with them," Weber said. "I hope that somebody, even if it's one person, saw us out there and felt a sense of solidarity or they went away with questions that they will research."

Towns said she hopes attendees leave feeling empowered, less isolated and part of a larger movement. As for the many onlookers who drove by, she hopes they recognized and respected the protesters’ First Amendment rights.
