If selecting a cut tree, watch for these signs that the tree is too far gone.&nbsp;

- Needles are a dull, grayish-green color - Needles fail to ooze pitch when broken apart and squeezed - Needles feel stiff and brittle - Needles pull easily off tree&nbsp;&nbsp;

Once you have your tree home, recut the trunk about one inch above the original cut. This will open up clogged, water-conducting tissues. Immediately place the trunk in warm water.

Locate the tree in as cool a spot as possible. Avoid areas near fireplaces, wood-burning stoves and heat ducts as the heat will result in excess water loss. 

Make sure the reservoir stays filled. If the reservoir loses enough water that the bottom of the trunk is exposed, the trunk will need to be recut. Adding aspirins, copper pennies, soda pop, sugar and bleach to the water reservoir have not been shown to prolong the life of a tree.&nbsp;

If you choose a living Christmas tree, be sure to dig the planting hole before the ground freezes.&nbsp; Mulch the hole and backfill soil to keep them from freezing. 

Live trees should not be kept inside for more than three days. Longer periods may cause them to lose dormancy resulting in severe injury when planted outside. You may wish to tag the tree at the nursery and then pick it up a couple days before Christmas. 

After Christmas, move the tree to an unheated garage for several days to acclimatize it to outside temperatures. After planting, water well and leave some mulch in place to prevent the soil water from freezing and becoming unavailable for plant uptake.

Week two Reindeer Radio winner announced; play with KAYS, Hays Post

Defiance Brewing Co., 2050 E. Highway 40, announced it will close its taproom this Friday after 12 years of operation.

Defiance Brewing Co. in Hays to close permanently on Friday

The Ellis County Commission will consider approving an increase in per-pound fees for disposing of household hazardous waste during its 8:30 a.m. meeting on Tuesday.

The change applies only to individuals or businesses disposing of more than 55 pounds per month. Ellis County residents will still have free disposal for smaller amounts, with some exceptions.

Justin Craig, county environmental services director, will meet with the commission. The current rates have not been updated since 2017, and increased disposal costs now require an adjustment.

Entities that exceed the monthly limit must use a commercial disposal service. The new rates would take effect Jan. 2.

Melissa Miller, the county’s health director, will request approval of a $53,500 purchase order to fund the remaining 2025 vaccines. The county returned to direct vaccine ordering after ending its contract with VaxCare in 2024.

A previous purchase order covered the first half of 2025. The new order will be paid from the health department’s end-of-year budget.

Kylie Honas of the Ellis County Library Board will provide an update on the board’s work throughout the year. Since the board was formed too late to prepare a 2025 budget, the commission had previously approved $10,000 in startup funds.

So far, only about $1,500 has been spent. The board still has fees due for 2025 that fall under the original $10,000 allocation.

Public Works Enterprise Asset Management solutions

Brendan Mackay, county public works director, will ask for approval to award the bid for a new Enterprise Asset Management system to OpenGov, replacing the county’s outdated system.

The system would improve workflow across public works divisions under a proposed five-year contract. The roughly $176,490 cost would be covered using the department’s remaining 2025 budget allocations.

Fort Hays State University President Tisa Mason will give updates from the university.

Two property owners will meet with the commission to discuss Wheatland Avenue, which runs north of Fort Hays State Tech North Central to 27th Street. They are seeking clarification on who is responsible for maintaining the road.

The commission will be asked to approve the annual review of the Ellis County Solid Waste Management Plan, which includes minor updates.

The Gemini Juniors 4-H club, with support from a local Scout troop, will ask for permission to decorate the trees just North of the Hays Public Library. This continues an annual tradition.

Ellis County Commission to consider increasing hazardous waste rates

GOVE COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 8a.m. Monday in Gove County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2019 Toyota Tacoma driven by Megan N.&nbsp;Mohrlang, 36, Clifton, Colorado, was westbound on Interstate 70 just west of County Road 14. The pickup struck a patch of ice, traveled into the ditch and rolled onto its top.

EMS transported Mohrlang to the Logan County Hospital. She was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Two inches of snow had fallen in Hays as of 8 this morning, according to the K-State Ag Research Center.

A winter weather advisory will be in effect until noon today.

Additional snowfall accumulation of up to an inch is possible, according to the National Weather Service.

Affected counties include Trego, Ellis, Ness, Rush, Pawnee and Stafford.&nbsp;

Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Plan on slippery road conditions.

The National Weather Service suggests you slow down and use caution while traveling. The latest road conditions for the state are available by calling 5 1 1.

Snow falls overnight in Hays; thaw expected Tuesday

Hays students are finding new confidence and career paths through Jobs for America's Graduates-Kansas as early as middle school.

Hays High School has offered the program for about a decade. JAG-K Career Specialist for Hays Middle School, Sally Giddens, said this is the program’s first year at the middle school.

"JAG-K states that the students we serve are anyone who has a need, want or can benefit from the JAG program," Giddens said.

JAG-K is a nonprofit that partners with schools to provide an elective course to support students at risk of not graduating.

The program offers academic support, career exploration and leadership development to help students successfully transition to post-secondary education, military service or the workforce.

JAG-K Career Specialist Bryan Zollinger said Hays High students must meet at least six selection criteria to qualify for the program.

"It could be that you come from a low-income family, somebody in your family is incarcerated, maybe you're from the bottom quadrant of class rank. Students who are not doing well for one reason or another, but have the potential to do well," Zollinger said.

According to JAG-K, among the class of 2024 in Kansas, 36% of students come from single-parent households, 57% are students of color, 44% rank in the bottom quarter of their class and 70% qualify for free or reduced-cost lunch.

Giddens said she oversees 58 students and focuses on building their skill sets. Her class completes monthly objectives centered on communication, decision-making and organizational skills.

Giddens said JAG-K places a strong emphasis on student voice and student choice.

"Ideally, they help me create who our guest speakers will be that month and who they want to learn from," she said.

Giddens said students regularly engage with local employers and take part in service projects. Recent activities include touring an Ellis County EMS ambulance and helping with football game set-ups and clean-ups.

Her students are scheduled to ring bells for the Salvation Army on three dates in December.

One recent speaker at the middle school was Remy Stull, a young barber at Fade Factory in Hays and a former JAG-K student. He also presented to JAG-K students at the high school on the same day Hays Post interviewed Zollinger.

Zollinger said the high school program has grown quickly since he started five years ago, expanding from 35 students to 120, with about 180 students now participating districtwide.

"We do what is called project-based learning. We don't have a textbook. We look at the competencies, and then we develop projects that teach those competencies," Zollinger said.

Zollinger said that last year, students engaged with 170 businesses, ranging from tours and guest speakers to job shadows, internships and apprenticeships. This is in addition to community service hours throughout the year.

"It's very student-centered. If we have a kid who's interested in automotive technology and repair, they can develop a project to cover those competencies," he said. "We do a lot of financial literacy education to hopefully keep them out of credit card debt, teach them how to save money, invest money and budget."

Zollinger said the program also offers a 12-month follow-up period after graduation, allowing him to stay in contact with students and help with tasks such as college applications and job opportunities.

According to JAG-K, the class of 2024 statewide exceeded national standards in the top measured success categories:

98% graduation rate 78% employement 67% further education

Zollinger works alongside JAG-K Career Specialist Ashley Kazenbach at the high school. Giddens said her middle school roster is nearing its limit of about 60 students, and she expects it to be at full capacity next semester.

Giddens emphasized that the program is not for “bad kids,” but for any students who may face challenges in different areas of their education.

"They all have a need, and they can all benefit from this program," she said. "That's something that's really special and different about this program that students may not always get in the normal classroom setting."

There are 121 JAG-K programs in the state serving 6,500 students for the 2025-26 school year, according to JAG-K.&nbsp;

 </figure>By TONY GUERRERO Hays PostHays students are finding new confidence and career paths through Jobs for America's Graduates-Kansas as early as middle school.Hays High School has offered the program for about a decade. JAG-K Career Specialist for Hays Middle School, Sally Giddens, said this is the program’s first year at the middle school."JAG-K states that the students we serve are anyone who has a need, want or can benefit from the JAG program," Giddens said.JAG-K is a nonprofit that partners with schools to provide an elective course to support students at risk of not graduating.The program offers academic support, career exploration and leadership development to help students successfully transition to post-secondary education, military service or the workforce.JAG-K Career Specialist Bryan Zollinger said Hays High students must meet at least six selection criteria to qualify for the program."It could be that you come from a low-income family, somebody in your family is incarcerated, maybe you're from the bottom quadrant of class rank. Students who are not doing well for one reason or another, but have the potential to do well," Zollinger said.According to JAG-K, among the class of 2024 in Kansas, 36% of students come from single-parent households, 57% are students of color, 44% rank in the bottom quarter of their class and 70% qualify for free or reduced-cost lunch.Giddens said she oversees 58 students and focuses on building their skill sets. Her class completes monthly objectives centered on communication, decision-making and organizational skills.Giddens said JAG-K places a strong emphasis on student voice and student choice.<figure>

 </figure>"Ideally, they help me create who our guest speakers will be that month and who they want to learn from," she said.Giddens said students regularly engage with local employers and take part in service projects. Recent activities include touring an Ellis County EMS ambulance and helping with football game set-ups and clean-ups.Her students are scheduled to ring bells for the Salvation Army on three dates in December.One recent speaker at the middle school was Remy Stull, a young barber at Fade Factory in Hays and a former JAG-K student. He also presented to JAG-K students at the high school on the same day Hays Post interviewed Zollinger.<figure>

 </figure>Zollinger said the high school program has grown quickly since he started five years ago, expanding from 35 students to 120, with about 180 students now participating districtwide."We do what is called project-based learning. We don't have a textbook. We look at the competencies, and then we develop projects that teach those competencies," Zollinger said.Zollinger said that last year, students engaged with 170 businesses, ranging from tours and guest speakers to job shadows, internships and apprenticeships. This is in addition to community service hours throughout the year."It's very student-centered. If we have a kid who's interested in automotive technology and repair, they can develop a project to cover those competencies," he said. "We do a lot of financial literacy education to hopefully keep them out of credit card debt, teach them how to save money, invest money and budget."Zollinger said the program also offers a 12-month follow-up period after graduation, allowing him to stay in contact with students and help with tasks such as college applications and job opportunities.According to JAG-K, the class of 2024 statewide exceeded national standards in the top measured success categories:98% graduation rate 78% employement 67% further education Zollinger works alongside JAG-K Career Specialist Ashley Kazenbach at the high school. Giddens said her middle school roster is nearing its limit of about 60 students, and she expects it to be at full capacity next semester.Giddens emphasized that the program is not for “bad kids,” but for any students who may face challenges in different areas of their education."They all have a need, and they can all benefit from this program," she said. Adams Brown celebrates 80 years by giving back to local communities

Fort Hays State University will recognize approximately 981 graduates for the fall commencement on Friday (in person) and Saturday, Dec. 12-13, for the virtual ceremonies.

Graduates who have chosen to participate in person will be honored in two ceremonies on Friday at Gross Memorial Coliseum (GMC). All graduates will be recognized in two virtual ceremonies on Saturday.

The ceremonies will begin at 8:30 a.m. (central time) on Friday for undergraduate and master’s candidates in the Robbins College of Business and Entrepreneurship, the College of Health and Behavioral Sciences, and the Werth College of Science, Technology, and Mathematics.

The 11 a.m. ceremony will be held for the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences and the College of Education, honoring undergraduate, master’s, and Ed.S. candidates.

Saturday’s virtual ceremonies will begin at 2 p.m. for the Ed.S. and master’s students. The undergraduate virtual ceremony will follow at 4 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

FHSU fall commencement set for Dec. 12, 13

The beginning of the winter holiday season has begun, filled with food, family, friends and fun. I’d like to share some thoughts from Kansas State University family resource management specialist Elizabeth Kiss. She says that as celebrations are planned, it is important to consider the mental and financial stresses of the holiday season.

“One way to approach holidays is managing our time, energy and money,” Kiss said. “Things to think about are what's important to us as individuals and what is it that our family most enjoys about the holidays and really focus on those things, which for many families, is being together.”

Kiss said food is a large part of the holiday budget, including traditional meals such as turkey on Thanksgiving as well as serving food during parties or open houses, baking, and eating out.

Kiss added that holiday decorations -- such as plates, napkins and wrapping paper -- are important to include in the budget, but urges consumers to be cautious of the environmental impact of excessive paper products.

“I think we sometimes have unrealistic expectations of the holidays, and that can not only be stressful from a financial standpoint, but a mental standpoint as well,” Kiss said.

She adds: “The perfectionism and high standards that we place on ourselves, especially when it comes to food, can be draining. It is more about being together and less about all of the decorations and all of those things being perfect.”

Kiss said there is a need to keep a normal routine between celebrations, especially for children.

“This is a lot of stimulation for children, and they may be eating differently -- maybe more sweets than usual -- so keeping mealtimes at a regular time and keeping bedtime fairly regular is important,” Kiss said. “Also consider how much they can handle in terms of events and stimulation, what they're interested in doing or what they most enjoy.”

Board games and outdoor activities don’t cost a lot of money, she said.

Kiss also recommends making lists for all gifts and browsing before purchasing to be able to take advantage of good prices and not overspending or not following a plan.

“Research has reported that more than half of shoppers have already started gift shopping so they can recognize the deals, and so they spread expenses out a little bit in their budget,” Kiss said.

Kiss suggests paying more upfront and financing less to minimize debt in January; pay cash when available. Keeping receipts and minimizing credit card use can help shoppers stick to a budget.

“Make the holidays what you want the holidays to be and be comfortable with what you decide. Try and keep that stress level -- both mentally and financially -- as low as possible,” Kiss said.

Holiday events in Osborne County

I wonder how many of you realize there are two different skunk species living in Kansas; the Striped Skunk with which we are very familiar, and the Eastern Spotted Skunk, often referred to by old-timers as civet cats. I knew there were spotted skunks in Kansas, but have never seen one myself, nor did I know anything about them, so off to Mr. Google I ran.

As Kansas became populated at the beginning of the 20th century, eastern spotted skunks moved northward and westward into the state. The small diversified family farms that existed back then with numerous hay stacks, tree rows, woodlots and myriads of small farm buildings favored the spotted skunk, and they thrived. 

Over the decades as farming has become bigger, cleaner and more efficient, the spotted skunk population has shrunken to where there are now only pockets of them in a few southeastern and west central counties; they just couldn’t adapt like the striped skunk and in 1982 they were added to the Kansas list of threatened species.

Eastern Spotted Skunks are smaller than a common house cat and are built long and low to the ground with bodies that more resemble a weasel. They have a white triangular nose patch, a mostly black tail and four to six white stripes arranged in seemingly infinite, random patterns around their body, making them appear more like spots than stripes. 

They eat mostly insects but are opportunistic feeders and will eat most anything if necessary. They are much more agile than striped skunks and readily climb up trees or into barn lofts.

I remember hearing the old guys at the nursing home where I used to work talk about trapping civet cats when they were young, and they all say how much worse it was to get sprayed by them than by a striped skunk. Sure enough, spotted skunk musk is known to be stronger than that of a normal striped skunk. A unique quirk a spotted skunk often exhibits is the inclination to do an actual handstand on its front legs with its tail arched over its back when threatened.

There is currently no open season allowing Eastern Spotted Skunks to be harvested in Kansas, so I think I’ll add seeing one in the wild to my personal bucket list.

What sat vacant for several months has been revived into a renewed cornerstone for floral services in Plainville, thanks to the Brewster family.

Joe and Lolly Brewster bought the location, 200 W. Mill St., after quietly eyeing it for four months. Lolly said an unexpected message soon arrived, setting their family on a new chapter.

"The realtor texted me in September of last year and asked, 'Do you have any interest?' and I said, 'How did you know?' because I've never pursued it," Lolly said.

Lolly said she has always loved floral design, landscaping and interior design, but she never envisioned her niche becoming a career. Paradise Flats Gifts &amp; Florals carries locally made items along with a variety of other gifts and décor available for delivery.

Their inventory includes custom seasonal arrangements, roses and a variety of wrapped bouquets. The shop’s shelves are lined with gifts such as stuffed animals, popcorn, candles, health and beauty items, religious items and seasonal décor.

The Brewster family began remodeling as soon as they purchased the shop on Nov. 21, 2024, but chose to remain open throughout the process to ensure Rooks County continued to have access to its floral services. The business was previously known as Mill Street Market.

Paradise Flats celebrated its one-year anniversary this month with an open house.

"We're very grateful to Deanna Hammerschmidt, the previous owner, and Carol Van Dyke, the owner before Deanna. We've learned from both of them and it's been very beneficial," Lolly said.

Its floral services cover a wide range of holidays and occasions. These include prom, homecoming, graduations and cemetery arrangements with delivery. The shop also provides tuxedo rentals and purchases through Jim’s Formal Wear, with measurements done in-house.

The shop also offers subscription packages for recurring monthly flower deliveries. With the first order, customers receive a vase that is reused for each subsequent arrangement.

The family of eight runs the business together, handling in-store services and social media marketing. Lolly said their family was deeply rooted in the community long before purchasing the shop and continues to strengthen those ties through their relationships with customers.

Joe said, "We wanted to provide a place where people could still shop locally versus going to Hays or Phillipsburg."

"We're not professionals by any means, but we try to serve our community," Lolly said.

Lolly graduated from Plainville High School and later earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Washburn University. She spent about 11 years in the nursing field before stepping away as their family grew to six children.

The shop is open from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Paradise Flats Gifts & Florals blooms under new ownership

TOPEKA — Twenty young Kansas Livestock Association (KLA) members from across the state graduated from the Young Stockmen’s Academy (YSA) November 21 during the annual KLA Convention. Merck Animal Health again partnered with KLA to host members in their 20s for a series of four seminars throughout 2025. The program, which began in 2006, now has graduated 376&nbsp;members.

The annual KLA Convention in Manhattan was the fourth and final session for this year’s class. Participants had the opportunity to gain additional industry knowledge and network with other KLA members from across the state during the three-day event.&nbsp;YSA&nbsp;members also got a firsthand look at the inner workings of the association by attending the KLA Chairmen’s Circle meeting and participated in the policy-making process by joining in on committee and council meetings.&nbsp;
