Since I have had some questions recently on soil sampling, I thought it might be worth re-visiting. Not always a fun activity but the return on investment (ROI) is guaranteed!

First and foremost what are you sampling for? This will determine how deep of a sample you will need to get. For instance, if you are sampling for phosphorus, potassium, soil pH and even micronutrients such as zinc, and iron, then a 0 to 6 inch sample is necessary; a piece of cake.

However, if you also need to sample for nitrogen (N), and possibly even chloride and sulfur then it gets tougher. Nitrogen, sulfur (S), and chloride (Cl) easily move with water and therefore considered mobile in the soil, as opposed to phosphorus that only moves a little in the soil. To sample properly for N, S, and Cl, K-State recommendations are to sample to a depth of 24 inches.

I will be the first to admit that sampling to a depth of two feet can be a bit tiring with a hand probe, even when soil moisture is good. But if you really want a more accurate N, S &amp; Cl soil test, you should sample to 24 inches. If the soil is dry, sample as deep as you can and record what the average sampling depth was on the form that goes to the lab.

For example if you probe to an average depth of 16 inches, make sure it is recorded on the form. Be sure you completely fill out the entire form. It will ask what the intended yield goal is and crop to be grown, what the previous crop was, dryland or irrigated, and if any manure has been applied; make note of that too. The more information the lab has the better the recommendations will be.

Some folks are using cordless drills and an auger type of bit to pull the 24 inch samples. We have the auger bit and bucket for check-out, as well as hand probes for check-out at our offices.

If you are using a hand probe take along a can of WD-40 and oil up the probe tube before using it. The soil cores come out so much easier, and, no, the WD-40 will not affect the soil in any way to foul up the results. 

Other items needed are two clean plastic buckets to put the 0 to 6 and 0 to 24 inch samples in, the soil sample form from the lab you use, and bags to put the soil into to mail to the lab—about a pint of soil is needed.

K-State recommends taking at least 20 to 30 cores per field, which is a bitter pill to swallow that most don’t. The more cores you take the better representation of the field you will get—to a point. I would recommend taking at least 12 to 15 cores per field, mix thoroughly in a clean bucket, and then fill your soil container from this mixture.&nbsp;

It is actually recommended to divide your fields into uniform areas. For example, if the field has differences in topography--bottom ground, hill sides or sloping, soil texture, etc.

On fields that have been reduced-tilled or no-tilled for several years, a split sample from the top 6 inches (i.e. 0 to 3 inches and 3 to 6 inches) is encouraged to assess pH to determine if there is any nutrient stratification—decrease in soil pH near the surface.

Avoid sampling in old fence rows, dead furrows, low spots, feeding areas, and other areas that might give unusual results. If information is desired on these unusual areas, obtain a separate sample from that area.

County extension offices have the soil sample forms and bags, and most if not all will have a soil probe you can check out and use.

I better quit while I still might be ahead. If I keep pointing out all of the fine details that land grant universities and soil scientists recommend in order to take soil samples, I will probably scare off all that read this. 

The key is to just get started and at least try sampling a few fields, and with time and some experience it will get easier and you will probably learn some tricks to make the experience less time consuming and labor intensive.

 The other alternative is to have someone who does this service come out and pull the samples. 

Either way it will still pay dividends and you will know how much fertilizer to apply, rather than guessing.

HAYS - Hays High and Hutchinson battled on Friday evening for a spot in the 5A State Basketball Tournament. The Indians trailed early then went on a big run and never looked back and won 56-17.

Hutchinson scored the first four points of the game. It took the Indians nearly three minutes to put anything on their side of the scoreboard. Katie Linenberger hit a pair of free throws and opened the flood gates.

Hays held the Salthawks scoreless for the remainder of the quarter for an 8-2 lead after the first eight minutes. The second quarter belonged to the Indians. Linenberger scored the first six points of the frame forcing a Hutchinson timeout.

The Salthawks scored out of the time out for their only points of the second quarter. Molly Buckles scored the final two points of the quarter right before the buzzer to polish off a 13-0 run and a 27-6 halftime lead.

Hutchinson scored the first three points out of the locker room. Hays responded with a 22-5 run for the remainder of the quarter. Molly Martin and Jenna Schmeidler scored 21 of the 22 points in the second for a 49-13 lead through three quarters.

Once again the fourth quarter was a running clock. Hays still outscored Hutchinson 7-4 for the 56-17 victory.

The 17 points scored by Hutchinson is the eleventh time the Indians have held an opponent to 29 or less points. It is the twelfth game an opponent had single digit made field goals in a game against Hays. Zoe Winter and Molly Buckles combined for 18 rebounds which was three more than Htuchinson had as a team.

Hays (22-0) sets a school record for wins in a season. The teams to beat Hutchinson (15-7) are a combined 132-6.&nbsp;

The Indians reach the state tournament for the first time since 1996.&nbsp;

🏀🎥 Hays High girls host Hutchinson in sub-state championship

In a weird twist in the draw of the seedings, both the Fort Hays State University men’s and women’s teams ended up playing the University of Central Missouri in this year’s quarterfinals of the MIAA Basketball Championships.

Some Tiger fans glanced at each other and chuckled when it was announced that the UCM dancers would be performing during a break in the women’s game Thursday night.

“And here from Central Missouri are the Mule Kickers,” came the announcement over the PA system.

It was the Tigers who actually did the kicking on this day, assuring the teams and their large following they would be enjoying the sites of Kansas City until at least Saturday.

While the Tiger men and women have turned in several exciting doubleheaders this season, fans were treated to a doozy on Thursday in historic Municipal Auditorium in downtown Kansas City, Mo.

In their first game, the FHSU men led by as many as 26 points in the first half but had to withstand a furious second-half comeback by the Mules to hold on for the win.

A long MIAA banner stretched down the length of the seats is the only thing separating fans from opposing teams sitting behind their teams’ benches.

As the Mules made basket after basket in their comeback and got to within three points late in the game, players from the UCM women’s team were part of the loud cheering section in the crowd.

The Jennies (the UCM women’s mascot) started jawing back and forth with a young man just a few seats away in the Tiger section.

In the end, it was the Tiger fan who got in the last jab as FHSU pulled out the 67-61 victory.

Tiger faithful wondered if the Jennies might have worn themselves out cheering for their men’s team. A few hours later, the UCM women fell to FHSU, 90-74.

Fort Hays State showed Central Missouri – and other MIAA teams – it’s here to stay as a conference stalwart after sophomore Telexa Weeter’s 35-point, 11-rebound performance in the women’s game.

It was uplifting to see how many Fort Hays State students get to take part in the MIAA Championships.

There was Garrett Wellbrock sitting courtside with Pittsburg State student Nick Butler, dressed in shirts, ties and suit jackets announcing the game alongside professional announcers.

Students from the video production programs at MIAA members FHSU, Central Missouri and Pittsburg State are streaming the tournament games for the MIAA Network this week.

Just a few seats down from Garrett was his dad, Gerard Wellbrock, longtime Voice of the Tigers for Eagle Radio in Hays.

Most fans who learned of the father-son connection surely were in unison while thinking, “How cool is that?”

Besides the players and their team managers, there was the pep band, the cheerleaders and the Tiger Debs dance team.

The university mascot, Victor E. Tiger, is always a crowd favorite.

And student workers from the Tigers’ athletic department were helping out FHSU Assistant Athletic Director Matt Cook, chair of the MIAA Basketball Tournament Committee.

“This is great for our students to have them around all our alumni and networking with other professionals as well,” said Curtis Hammeke, FHSU’s athletic director. “The tournament is a great platform that is beneficial for our students in a lot of ways.”

The 2025 tournament is a nostalgic one for Hammeke, who is retiring in June after 21 years as the Tiger athletic director. Hammeke, an FHSU graduate, also served as the Tigers’ baseball coach for several years.

Bill and Sandi Hubbard from Lawrence traveled east to Kansas City to watch their daughter, Sally, play in the Tiger pep band.

“That’s awesome that you’re from Lawrence (home of KU) and your daughter came out west to college Fort Hays,” a Tiger fan told the Hubbards as they stood in line for prime seats.

Yes, people stand in line in the hallway – some for as long as an hour – to nab their favorite seat behind the Tiger bench.

“We gave our kids the privilege to say they paid for their own college education,” Sandi said with a smile, mentioning the affordability and numerous scholarship opportunities at Fort Hays State.

“We’re here to cheer on the band and want the Tigers to keep winning,” Bill added. “The more they win, the more we get to watch our daughter in the band. ”

Rest assured, other FHSU supporters have the same wish.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

The advisory took effect on March 7, 2025, and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. 

KDHE officials issued the advisory because of the city cannot currently maintain the minimum required chlorine residual. Failure to maintain required chlorine residual levels may put the system at risk for bacterial contamination.&nbsp;

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Fort Hays State University Music &amp; Theatre Programs is proud to announce that Ashley Vilaysing is the recipient of The Presser Foundation’s 2024-25 Undergraduate Scholar Award. The award is designed to encourage and support the education of a music student who has achieved a high level of musical and academic excellence, demonstrated leadership and service, and contributed to an inclusive community.

Vilaysing, a Hays native, is a senior at FHSU pursuing a major in music education with a minor in psychology. She is active in many ensembles, including the FHSU Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Winds, Tiger Marching Band, the Hays Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, and Clarinet Choir. She holds several leadership positions within these ensembles, including principal clarinetist, section leader, drum major, and uniform manager. 

Vilaysing is also engaged in the collegiate chapter of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) at FHSU, currently as vice president.

"Ashley is an exceptional student leader whose dedication, professionalism, and passion for music education set her apart,” said Dr. Emily Chapman, assistant professor of music education at FHSU. “As a talented musician and mentor, she has demonstrated both excellence in her craft and a deep commitment to guiding and inspiring others. With her unwavering drive to make a difference, she is eager to step into the classroom and impact the lives of her future students from day one. I am incredibly proud of the teacher she is becoming.”

Vilaysing said she is grateful and honored to be selected as this year’s Presser Scholar.

“My passion for music education stems from the support of all the amazing educators I’ve been fortunate to have and my closest friends and family,” she said. “Through their belief in me, I am inspired to provide the best opportunities for every student, and I aim to lead with compassion, understanding, and excitement.”

Vilaysing hopes to inspire her students with the courage to pursue their passions in much the same way her teachers inspired her.

“I push myself to be the best I can be so that my future students can receive the education they deserve,” she said “Through enriching and broadening perspectives, I hope to provide my students the chance to experience and enjoy diverse educators from a variety of backgrounds.”

Vilaysing plans to teach in western Kansas after graduation, where she can encourage future students and foster a life-long love for music. Vilaysing will use the funds to help support her student teaching journey next semester. She hopes to share her passion for music and, in turn, help her students discover their own passions.

The Presser Foundation was established in 1939 under the will of the late Theodore Presser. It is one of the few private foundations in the United States dedicated solely to music education and music philanthropy. 

Mr. Presser taught at many undergraduate and graduate music institutions. To honor his commitment to music education, undergraduate music programs at selected colleges, universities, and independent institutions of higher education are provided the opportunity to present the Presser Undergraduate Scholar Award, which recognizes the accomplishments and contributions of a music major in their final year of undergraduate study.

2025 Presser Scholar at Fort Hays State University announced

The Hays Police Department is requesting the public's assistance in locating two suspects involved in a robbery.

At about 12:26 a.m. on March 1, Hays Police responded to a report of possible aggravated battery in the 500 block of West 7th St. in the back alley of Chucks, Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler said.

A Hays man was allegedly accosted at gunpoint by two male suspects and taken to an area between houses, where he was physically assaulted and pistol-whipped.

Scheibler said the man was allegedly stripped of his clothing, except for his underwear, and robbed of his wallet and phone.

Twenty-year-old Roqua James Fleenor of Hays is wanted for alleged aggravated kidnapping, aggravated robbery and aggravated battery.

Twenty-six-year-old Isaiah Tai Simpson of Hays is wanted for allegedly aiding and abetting in aggravated kidnapping and aggravated robbery, and interference with law enforcement.

Both suspects should be considered armed and dangerous. Scheibler cautions the public from approaching the suspects.

SENATE HIGHLIGHTS March 4, 2025

Senate Committees continued to review bills which have been sent over from the House, and we had one day of General Orders this week in the Senate.&nbsp; As we work though committee bills on the floor, we will also begin to have&nbsp;Conference Committee reports to vote on as well.&nbsp; 

A Conference Committee is a small, bipartisan and bicameral committee that works to smooth out the differences between the House’s and Senate’s version of a similar bill.&nbsp; Once the Conference Committee comes to a compromise, the committee’s version of the bill will be sent to both the House and the Senate for a final vote, before advancing the bill to the Governor’s desk.&nbsp;

<a target="_blank" href="https://kslegislature.gov/li/b2025_26/measures/scr1604/">SCR 1604</a>, a resolution calling for the Convention of States.&nbsp; Under Article V of the United States Constitution, a convention of states may be called to propose amendments to the United States Constitution.&nbsp; It takes 34 states ratifying identical resolutions to call for such a convention, and then 38 states to ratify any amendments emerging from that convention. So far, 19 states have adopted a version of SCR 1604, which calls for a convention “limited to proposing amendments to the Constitution of the United States that impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government, and limit the terms of office for its officials and for members of Congress."&nbsp;&nbsp;SCR1604 passed 29-11.&nbsp; I voted yes.

<a target="_blank" href="https://kslegislature.gov/li/b2025_26/measures/sb33/">SB 33</a>&nbsp;would authorize the sales tax exemption provided for in continuing law for sales of the services of slaughtering, butchering, custom cutting, dressing, processing, or packaging of an animal for the customer’s own use or consumption to be claimed without a requirement that exemption certificates or forms be provided by the purchaser or collected or maintained by the seller.&nbsp; This a follow-up bill from 2024 which removed sales tax on the processing of meat but customers were required to fill out extra Department of Revenue paperwork each time and keep on file for future review of the state.&nbsp;&nbsp;SB 33 passed 40-0.&nbsp; I voted yes.

<a target="_blank" href="https://kslegislature.gov/li/b2025_26/measures/sb137/">SB 137</a>&nbsp;would amend the Kansas Standard Asset Seizure and Forfeiture Act to permit firearms forfeited under the Act to be sold or transferred to a properly licensed federal firearms dealer.&nbsp;&nbsp;SB&nbsp;137 passed 39-1.&nbsp; I voted yes.

Imagine someone you love in crisis – scared, overwhelmed, unsure where to turn. For too many in our community, that’s often the reality. But it doesn’t have to be.

High Plains Mental Health Center is proud to announce construction has started on a new Crisis Intervention Center in downtown Hays.

This facility will help save lives and bring hope to those who need it most.

Expected to open in November, the Crisis Intervention Center will serve adult clients experiencing mental health or substance use crises. 

The facility will accept both voluntary and non-voluntary referrals for treatment and will also offer medical detox services for those under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Currently, there are no outpatient de-tox facilities or adult crisis beds in Northwest Kansas, so this facility will fill a significant gap in services, said Chief Executive Officer Craig Poe.

“This facility will be a vital resource for individuals facing mental health and substance use crises. Too often, those in crisis find themselves in emergency rooms unequipped to provide the specialized care they need or, even worse, in jail due to a lack of appropriate alternatives,” Poe said. 

“The [Crisis Intervention Center] will change that by offering immediate stabilization, treatment, and support in a safe, therapeutic environment that upholds the dignity of every individual.”

The&nbsp;Crisis Intervention Center will offer 22 patient rooms and two de-escalation rooms, with overflow capacity available to accommodate peak demand times.

The facility is expected to serve at least 500 clients annually, and it will be the closest option for residents in 28 western Kansas counties.

It will be in the Hadley Office Complex, 205 E. Seventh Street in Hays. Led by High Plains Mental Health Center, this transformative project is already partially funded, but an additional $4 million is needed to make it a reality.

These funds will cover critical renovations, architectural design, safety enhancements, and furnishings to ensure a state-of-the-art facility. 

With a target completion date of October 2025, this project is on a tight timeline — but the urgency of our community’s mental health needs makes every step forward essential.

Over the past decade, mental illness and substance use issues have escalated into a growing crisis that demands immediate attention. 

Northwest Kansas has one of the highest suicide rates in the state, yet there are no adult psychiatric hospitals in the region.

As a result, individuals in urgent need of care are often sent to emergency rooms or jails — facilities designed for medical emergencies and public safety, not for mental health treatment.

Without the right expertise or environment, these settings often fail to provide the care needed, leaving individuals vulnerable and their conditions worsening.

The current system is overloaded, as regional emergency rooms often must hold psychiatric patients for days waiting on a state hospital bed to become available.

Often, law enforcement officers must also remain at the hospital in cases of non-voluntary admissions. As a result, rural police and sheriff’s departments struggle with staffing capacity while knowing the patients are not receiving prompt and adequate treatment.

“This facility will be huge for this region and our ability to provide services to those mental health consumers who need help, especially in times of crisis,” said Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler. “Law enforcement across the region have to respond to these calls. This facility will allow those patients to get treatment in a more timely manner.”

The&nbsp;Crisis Intervention Center will also drive economic growth and community prosperity by creating 86 new jobs — 50 direct jobs within the&nbsp;Crisis Intervention Center and 36 additional jobs through the subsequent economic ripple effect.

This proposal is an opportunity to make a lasting impact on the mental well-being of Kansans, while simultaneously driving economic growth and job creation in Hays and surrounding communities.

High Plains announces new Crisis Intervention Center; launches fundraising campaign

Hays Municipal Court introduces its newest court clerk, a rising professional in law and order.

Megan Kisner, a Junction City native, moved to attend Fort Hays State University before finding herself managing police records and greeting everyone who arrived at the Hays Police Department.

"I really wanted to learn a lot more about law enforcement and the legal system. This was a really good fit for me to learn about something I was interested in," Kisner said.

Kisner spent over a year as a police records clerk before transitioning to the municipal court on Feb. 16, bringing experience from her previous role.

Kisner said the police department and municipal court offices are cross-trained. Both are located under the Hays Police Department building.

Eager to take on new challenges, Kisner embraces new responsibilities, including court attendance, legal paperwork, and regular communication with attorneys and defendants.

"It'll be a learning curve for myself," she said.

Kisner grew fond of Hays and the region, which influenced her to stay. Three months ago, she married a local farmer, further solidifying her ties to the community.

Kisner earned an associate's degree in general business, which she credits with providing valuable skills that can be applied across various professions.

"Business classes are essential for anybody in any career. You learn about effective communication, management and marketing," she said.

Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler highlighted several staffing changes, including a new city prosecutor, which has delayed some cases and added to the municipal court’s backlog.

"That's a bit of a challenge, but I'm excited for Megan. She's a really good fit for the position," Scheibler said.&nbsp;

Kisner appreciates remaining in the same office with her colleagues and does not see herself going anywhere as she focuses on the court's growth.

"I'm very happy just staying in this position that I have been promoted to. I think there's a lot of growth that can be done within the municipal court, and there's a lot of exciting opportunities," she said.

A Plan Can Help Small and Medium-Sized Businesses Fuel Growth

It’s best practice for all businesses to have a strategic plan, from self-employed professionals to Fortune 500 Companies. Strategic plans provide vision, direction, focus and help business owners align their goals with actionable steps. Without a strategic plan, businesses risk drifting without clear priorities, leading to missed opportunities.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Additionally, strategic plans help businesses anticipate potential challenges and respond to competition in a proactive manner. By setting clear objectives and identifying competitive advantages (and disadvantages), the business can develop strategies to differentiate themselves from competitors and stand out in the market.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The business owners and executives we’ve seen successfully develop and execute strategic plans were the ones willing to step outside of the normal “day-to-day” and dedicate the time to working on their company. The investment made in designing the plan, executing the plan and being held accountable to the plan, were just as, if not more important, than the actual plan itself.&nbsp;

How Does a Strategic Plan Work?&nbsp;

Simply put, a strategic plan is a roadmap to get you from Point A and Point B. We like to think of a strategic plan as if we were planning on a cross-country road trip. Before getting on the road, wouldn’t you want to take a look at a map? Of course. Yet it’s surprising how many companies attempt “to drive from LA to New York” without a map.&nbsp;

The first thing to consider is what kind of trip you want to have. Is the goal to take the fastest, most direct route? Is the goal to meander and stop to catch a show in Vegas or hike in the Rockies? Or is the goal to drive to Kansas City as fast as possible, but stay with family for a few days?&nbsp;

In other words, setting goals and objectives is the heart of a strategic plan.

In the business world, it looks like this:&nbsp;

ABC Company is making $5 million in revenue and has EBITDA of $1 million. It has 25 employees and sells products into three customer groups. Its owner’s top goal is to grow. But growth is an amorphous goal until you quantify it with some numbers.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Industry research – an essential aspect of strategic planning – shows other companies in ABC’s industry have typically achieved growth of 2x to 3x revenues over the past five years. But ABC’s owner wants to achieve growth of 5x revenues and add two more customer groups over the next five years.&nbsp;

A key characteristic of a good strategic plan is the probability of success i.e. realistic. The ABC owner’s goal is aggressive, but is it realistic? A market analysis shows the owner’s goal may be realistic if ABC can acquire a competitor company in addition to achieving organic growth, and if the economy and interest rates are favorable. But those are big “ifs,” and ABC would have to be extraordinarily disciplined to adhere to the strategic plan’s roadmap.&nbsp;

Quantitative &amp; Qualitative&nbsp;

Building a strategic plan requires both quantitative and qualitative thinking. Your goal may be quantitative – say you want your company to grow from $10 million in revenues to $15 million over the next three years before going out to market. That’s quantitative. You have quantified a goal.&nbsp;

 </ul>It’s best practice for all businesses to have a strategic plan, from self-employed professionals to Fortune 500 Companies. Strategic plans provide vision, direction, focus and help business owners align their goals with actionable steps. Without a strategic plan, businesses risk drifting without clear priorities, leading to missed opportunities.&nbsp;&nbsp;Additionally, strategic plans help businesses anticipate potential challenges and respond to competition in a proactive manner. By setting clear objectives and identifying competitive advantages (and disadvantages), the business can develop strategies to differentiate themselves from competitors and stand out in the market.&nbsp;&nbsp;The business owners and executives we’ve seen successfully develop and execute strategic plans were the ones willing to step outside of the normal “day-to-day” and dedicate the time to working on their company. The investment made in designing the plan, executing the plan and being held accountable to the plan, were just as, if not more important, than the actual plan itself.&nbsp;How Does a Strategic Plan Work?&nbsp;Simply put, a strategic plan is a roadmap to get you from Point A and Point B. We like to think of a strategic plan as if we were planning on a cross-country road trip. Before getting on the road, wouldn’t you want to take a look at a map? Of course. Yet it’s surprising how many companies attempt “to drive from LA to New York” without a map.&nbsp;The first thing to consider is what kind of trip you want to have. Is the goal to take the fastest, most direct route? Is the goal to meander and stop to catch a show in Vegas or hike in the Rockies? Or is the goal to drive to Kansas City as fast as possible, but stay with family for a few days?&nbsp;In other words, setting goals and objectives is the heart of a strategic plan.In the business world, it looks like this:&nbsp;ABC Company is making $5 million in revenue and has EBITDA of $1 million. It has 25 employees and sells products into three customer groups. Its owner’s top goal is to grow. But growth is an amorphous goal until you quantify it with some numbers.&nbsp;&nbsp;Industry research – an essential aspect of strategic planning – shows other companies in ABC’s industry have typically achieved growth of 2x to 3x revenues over the past five years. But ABC’s owner wants to achieve growth of 5x revenues and add two more customer groups over the next five years.&nbsp;A key characteristic of a good strategic plan is the probability of success i.e. realistic. The ABC owner’s goal is aggressive, but is it realistic? A market analysis shows the owner’s goal may be realistic if ABC can acquire a competitor company in addition to achieving organic growth, and if the economy and interest rates are favorable. But those are big “ifs,” and ABC would have to be extraordinarily disciplined to adhere to the strategic plan’s roadmap.&nbsp;Quantitative &amp; Qualitative&nbsp;Building a strategic plan requires both quantitative and qualitative thinking. Your goal may be quantitative – say you want your company to grow from $10 million in revenues to $15 million over the next three years before going out to market. That’s quantitative. You have quantified a goal.&nbsp;But a market analysis may show that the best-in-class companies in your sector (e.g. manufacturing industry) are selling products at gross margins of 40% to 50%. Yet your company is selling products at a gross margin of 30%. It is also a quantitative thought: 30% vs 40%-50%. But it is also a qualitative thought: why? Why are your company’s products selling at a lower gross margin than your competition? Are they buying raw materials cheaper? Does your workforce lack certain skills and training to manufacture complex, more profitable products? Do you need to invest in better equipment in an attempt to improve production efficiency? The numbers point to a qualitative question, and you need to look at what’s behind your gross margin and figure out how to improve it before you go to market.&nbsp;In essence, math can be easy. The numbers speak for themselves. But it’s the qualitative factors behind the numbers that reveal the challenges that will define much of a company’s strategic plan.&nbsp;Business Lifecycle&nbsp;An effective strategic plan should mirror where a company is in its business lifecycle. If your company is a startup, the strategic plan will look different than the plan for a mature business. For a startup, the goal may not be to become profitable within a year, but rather obtain additional rounds of funding, prove its concept and identify a growth track.&nbsp;&nbsp;Compare this plan to a company that is mature, profitable and has shareholders. They may not be looking for additional investments. But say the company has had a great year and has grabbed the attention of several private equity groups for a future acquisition. Its strategic plan might be one built around selling the company in two or three years and cashing out. What was once a mature company has now prepared a strategic plan around exit planning.&nbsp;No matter where a company is in its business lifecycle, the process of building a strategic plan is the same: you have a starting point, which is where you are today. You envision an end point. Your strategic plan is the roadmap that gets you from the starting point to the end point.Characteristics of a Good Strategic Plan&nbsp;A good strategic plan rests on three important characteristics:&nbsp;<ul>
 <li>Clarity:&nbsp;Even if someone doesn’t agree with your plan, can they read it and understand it? Does it make sense? If a business owner hears from key stakeholders that the strategic plan doesn’t make sense or can’t hit its goals, such criticism should be taken seriously.&nbsp;</li><li>Relevance:&nbsp;Does the plan support the owner’s goal? A strategic plan should tie back to specific goals and timelines. If analysis and financial projections show the strategies and objectives in the plan, such as acquisitions or expansions of product lines, won’t be enough to help the company reach its goals, where does the problem lie? Are the strategies out of kilter or are the goals unrealistic?&nbsp;</li><li>Reality:&nbsp;Perhaps the most important characteristic is whether the plan is realistic. You should be able to map goals, objectives, milestones and outcomes to the plan in a way that makes sense. If a company is valued at $8 million and its owner’s goal is to sell for $10 million, and industry projections support that growth, that’s a realistic goal. But if they’re valued at $8 million and they want to sell for $20 million within two years, that’s an unrealistic goal.&nbsp;</li>
 </ul>Who is Involved in Building a Strategic Plan?&nbsp;Ultimately, a strategic plan will impact nearly everyone in a company. It needs to be finalized and approved by key stakeholders, including top management, investors and perhaps the company’s attorney and accountant.&nbsp;But the team that actually puts together the plan should be selected based on their skills and the relevance of their roles to the content of the plan. For instance, if the plan calls for a reorganization of the ownership group, an attorney will need to be involved, and most likely a tax advisor, as well.&nbsp;Some companies have the internal talent and skills to put together a comprehensive strategic plan. Others don’t and need to reach outside for expertise. Depending on the key goals and strategies laid out in the plan, input from an attorney, an accountant, a banker, a wealth advisor or a business consultant may be advantageous.&nbsp;In the end, your strategic plan needs to be short, sweet and to the point. But it needs to be supported by a lot of work behind it.
