The Plainville Fire Department recently received an $8,000 matching grant from the Heartland Community Foundation to purchase grain bin entrapment rescue equipment.

The equipment will be the only equipment between Ellis County and Phillipsburg. The project qualified for Rooks County Disaster funds as a disaster preparedness project, Sarah Meitner, Heartland executive director, said in an email.

The matching funds from the fire department came from a golf tournament fundraiser in April that raised $7,900, said Craig Wise, Plainville fire chief.

The rescue kits include safety harnesses, ropes, a tripod, a coffer bin and a grain auger. The equipment is on order. Some of the Plainville firefighters, who are all volunteers, have already received entrapment training. More firefighters will be trained once the equipment arrives.

Wise said the intent was this equipment would be used regionally and would be available to the Stockton Fire Department as well. Stockton firefighters also will be participating in rescue training.

A timely response is vital in grain bin accidents. Old or wet grain can get caked on the side of the grain bins. A farmer may enter the bin to break the grain lose and not realize there's a void in the grain underneath him or her, Wise said.

The farmer can sink into the grain and become entrapped almost as if they are encased in concrete, Wise said. 

"If you go deep enough, it can cut how much air you can take into your lungs," Wise said. "If your chest can't expand, your lungs can't get the air.

"With that said, us having the equipment and the knowledge to deploy the equipment rapidly but efficiently is extremely important."

Wise said he thought the equipment is especially key to responding to possible entrapments at private grain bins rather than large co-op grain elevators that may have safety protocols built into their systems. 

Plainville Fire has not had to respond to a grain bin entrapment during Wise's tenure.

"We would rather have the equipment and training and never need it than not have any of it and need it," he said.

Wise thanked the Heartland Foundation as well as members of the community who supported the project.

In a separate grant, the Stockton Fire Department received $6,000 from Heartland Community Foundation to purchase 14 carbon-fiber oxygen cylinders. The lightweight cylinders will allow firefighters to be more nimble and responsive in a fire and outfit them with the safest equipment.

Plainville fire receives grant for grain bin entrapment rescue equipment

Two Ellis County residents face rape and other charges related to an incident in March 2021.&nbsp;

According to court records, Michael Patrick Schmidt, 22, and Casey Ray Robben, 22, appeared in Ellis County District Court this week after an arrest warrant was issued for both men on Nov. 7.

In the filed criminal complaints, Robben was charged with rape, aggravated criminal sodomy and breach of privacy.

Schmidt was charged with rape and aggravated criminal sodomy.

The charges stem from an incident alleged to have occurred on March 17, 2021.

During the incident, the unidentified victim was said to have been assaulted by both men while intoxicated and unable to offer consent, according to court documents.

Robben also allegedly filmed the victim in a state of undress and is accused of sharing that video without consent.

Schmidt was also charged on suspicion of rape in a second incident reported to have occurred with a separate unidentified victim on August 12, 2021.

Bond for Schmidt was set at $100,000, and he was no longer listed as being held in the Ellis County jail as of Thursday morning.

A hearing to reduce a $250,000 bond for Robben was set for 10 a.m. Thursday. The motion was presented through his attorney Andrew Walter and sought his release without a bond but under the supervision of a court services officer.

Plaid Friday was first celebrated in 2009 in Oakland, Calif., a city known for strong “shop local” campaigns. The Plaid Friday movement has grown across the nation, and even more so in the Russell area. 

Starting in 2010, Encore Antiques &amp; Collectables hosted Plaid Friday events and in 2014 Encore encouraged local businesses to become involved. The Russell County Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau stepped in to support the local Plaid Friday efforts.

Small Business Saturday was first observed in the United States in 2010, and encourages holiday shoppers to patronize brick and mortar businesses that are small and local. The first event was sponsored and promoted by American Express via a nationwide radio and television advertising campaign. 

Encore first celebrated Small Business Saturday in 2011 and was named a Small Business Saturday Neighborhood Champion for the sixth year in a row.

Sunday Funday will include a variety of events, allowing families to enjoy time together and find a few final bargains. Encore Antiques &amp; Collectables serves as the headquarters for Plaid on the Plains. Shoppers are encouraged to start their Plaid on the Plains adventures at Encore to pick up a plaid shopping bag and the 2022&nbsp;Shop Sheet. 'Plaid on the Plains' encourages holiday shoppers to buy local

Members of the Delta Tau Omega chapter of the American Criminal Justice Association/Lambda Alpha Epsilon traveled to Warrensburg, Mo., this fall to compete in the Region 3 Conference. With its 21 members, the FHSU’s team was the largest Criminal Justice Club group to travel to a regional or national conference. In addition, team members brought home more awards than had been received at any previous competition.

“This speaks highly of the criminal justice majors and minors who take their participation in this organization and their education seriously,” said Dr. Tamara Lynn, associate professor of criminal justice. “We look forward to the ongoing success of all members of the organization.”

The club competed against chapters from Garden City Community College, Metro Community College (Nebraska), Peru State University (Nebraska), University of Central Missouri, Central Methodist University (Missouri), and California State University, Long Beach.

Club members competed in written exams, including corrections, criminal law, juvenile justice, police administration, and ACJA/LAE Knowledge about the organization. Students also competed in skills-based contests, including crime scene teams, firearms (individual and teams), and physical agility.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The final competition included scholarly poster presentations.&nbsp; Written exams, crime scene processing, and firearms competition levels included lower (freshmen and sophomores), upper (juniors, seniors, and graduate students), and professional.&nbsp; The physical agility competition, separated by age, male, and female, included 18 – 25, 26 – 35, and 36 + years of age.&nbsp; The poster presentations were divided into lower, upper, and graduate levels.&nbsp; Individual award winners, according to the level of competition, from this year’s conference include:

Three-day weather outlook

Looking at turkeys for your holiday meals? &nbsp;Here are some tips&nbsp;to help make your holiday&nbsp;turkey&nbsp;safe and healthy. &nbsp;Turkey is a healthy choice&nbsp;since&nbsp;it is considered a white meat and full of protein! &nbsp;

ome tips for keeping it as healthy as possible is to bake it and not fry it&nbsp;or&nbsp;use herbs&nbsp;and&nbsp;lemon to season rather than butter and salt. &nbsp;Allow&nbsp;one&nbsp;pound (1&nbsp;lb)&nbsp;of turkey per person&nbsp;you are serving.&nbsp;Thawing turkeys can be tricky but remember to thaw them&nbsp;in one of three ways:&nbsp;in the refrigerator, in cold water,&nbsp;or the microwave. &nbsp;Allowing your bird to thaw at room temperature can allow dangerous bacteria to grow. &nbsp;Washing a raw turkey or poultry also spreads bacteria around the kitchen so you can save time and skip washing the bird.&nbsp;To roast the turkey, start with&nbsp;an oven temperature set at least at 325 degrees. &nbsp;Timetable for turkey roasting varies based on size and if the turkey is stuffed or not. &nbsp;The turkey&nbsp;should reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees&nbsp;when it is thoroughly cooked. &nbsp;Allow the turkey to stand for 20 minutes before carving.

Then there are the leftovers. &nbsp;Turkey can be eaten hot or cold once it is cooked. &nbsp;However,&nbsp;a good rule is to keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold and don’t allow leftovers out for too long. &nbsp;Resist the temptation to leave lunch out for supper.&nbsp;&nbsp;Leftovers should be refrigerated within two hours. &nbsp;Dividing leftovers into smaller portions and in shallow containers allows leftovers to coolquickly. &nbsp;Leftovers should be used within three to four days. &nbsp;

The high Friday is not expected to get above the freezing mark, with sustained northwest winds of 11 to 14 mph. The overnight low will drop to the mid- to upper-teens.

On Saturday, the high is expected to rise to 41, and then jump to the mid-50s Sunday through Wednesday. Thanksgiving Day is predicted to be colder, with a high in the low-40s, the NWS said.

Skies are expected to remain clear through Turkey Day, forecasters predicted.

Cold Friday, then mercury will rise this weekend in NW Kansas

RUSSELL COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 3p.m. Thursday in Russell County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a&nbsp; 2022 Peterbilt straight truck driven by Anthony Joseph Moshier, 23, Hoisington, was northbound on 181st Street 3.9 miles west of the U.S. 40 and U.S. 281 Junction and stopped at the railroad crossing.

As the truck began moving forward, the driver did not see the westbound train.&nbsp; The train collided with the truck.&nbsp; The truck came to rest in the southwest corner of the crossing where it caught fire and was completely destroyed.

EMS transported Moshier to Russell Regional Medical Center.&nbsp; There were no injuries on the train.&nbsp;Moshier was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Kansas man hospitalized after train, truck crash and fire

THOMAS COUNTY — U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development Kansas State Director Christy Davis announced Thursday the agency is lending&nbsp;$108,249,000 to help Citizens Medical Center in Colby&nbsp;expand critical health care services, according to a media release from the agency.

On Nov. 2, the community broke ground on a 184,000-square-foot replacement hospital and rural health care facility in Colby.

The new facility will incorporate operations of both the hospital — Citizens Medical Center — and family practice clinic — Family Center for Health Care — under one roof, according to a media release from the Citizen's Foundation.&nbsp; The new facility will encompass all currently available services plus additional capabilities that include future service expansions. The new facility will be located south of the existing campus. 

The current facilities will be repurposed and remain as functional aspects of the organization.

“There is no better way to celebrate National Rural Health Day than to invest in our state’s rural healthcare infrastructure,” Davis said. “USDA is committed to ensuring rural Americans have access to reliable quality health care, like that provided by Citizens Medical Center.” &nbsp;&nbsp;

USDA providing $108M in loans for new hospital in Colby

Four Fort Hays State University seniors in interior design created a spa at the Moss-Thorns Gallery of Art.

"Essence" is the annual interior design senior exhibit. The seniors — Holly Linenberger of Hays, Brianna&nbsp; Miller of Spearville, Chloe Hibbs of Concordia and&nbsp; Aundrea Madison of Ulysses— were the first group to design a commercial space for their senior project.

The exhibit will be on display through Nov. 18.

Hibbs worked on the reception area of the spa.

"We went with lighter colors because when you think of a spa, you think of clean and also elegance and also the organic feel," she said.

The students chose soft tones of green and blue, as well as neutrals to give a clean, calming feel.

"This year we wanted to go more commercial," Linenberger said, "and have a spa with more a relaxing, sensory and elegant theme to it, but also incorporating biophilia with the plants and everything. We just wanted to give the community a relaxing spa, especially in times like this." 

Biophilia is the human instinct to connect with nature.

The students also incorporated eucalyptus scents and the sound of water for a further calming effect.

The students created a light fixture using copper sheets, clear Christmas ball ornaments and fairy lights. The students also used candles throughout.

Ashley Furniture provided the furniture for the exhibit and other local sponsors provided other accents.

Madison and Miller composed the center seating area.

"It's really serene is what we were going with, so we have bamboo and the furniture from Ashley's we tried to make it very organic and very round and soft," Madison said.

Linda Ganstrom, FHSU ceramics professor, lent her sculptures of women to the exhibit.

Underclassmen made pillows for the massage beds and covered the chairs for the changing rooms.

The students created a tea bar, which included a living moss installation on the wall.&nbsp;

"We chose to do commercial because it's different. We wanted to give Hays a different feeling and a different feeling of the spa — an organic one and a natural one," Miller said. "We really just wanted to change it up."

Miller will graduate in May. She hopes to live and work in Kansas City after graduation.

Linenberger will graduate in May with a degree in interior design with certificates in construction management technology, architectural technology, drafting and design, and painting. She said she hopes to eventually own her own interior design company.

Madison will graduate with her degree in interior design in December. She hopes to work at an architectural firm.

Hibbs will be graduating in May. She said she would like to work for a contractor or architectural firm after graduation.

Interior design students explore commercial space in 'Essence'

A consultant brought in by the Hays USD 489 to look at the rebranding of Hays High and Hays Middle schools told a community forum that the responses from a rebranding survey were very positive but lacked cohesiveness.

The district is in the process of building a new high school after a bond was passed in May.

District officials said they wanted to look at the rebranding for the school before construction begins next summer.

No action was taken on the rebranding process Tuesday night, but about 80 people attended the community meeting — some with very differing views.

More than 600 people — students, parents, alumni and community members — responded to a survey on a possible rebranding. The results of that survey were released for the first time Tuesday night.

"All of what we are talking about with the Hays High School Indians is very topical," John Jenson, consultant, said. "It is what we call a sensitive mark. All across the country, I'm dealing with these Chinooks and the Savages and Red Raiders and the Redskins and the Warriors everywhere I go."

Jenson is employed by Jostens. He provides his services free upon request to schools across the country. The district is not paying for his services.

"My goal tonight is to let you know what you think you are going to be moving forward," he said.

The survey asked what it means to be an Indian. Although a few respondents said being an Indian is racist and disrespectful. Jenson said the majority of the survey respondents said they felt being an Indian was positive. This included words like tough, courageous, gritty and intelligent.

"People love this place," he said. "There's no denying it."

He continued, "The problem is not that people don't love it here. The problem isn't that the Indians don't mean something. It just doesn't mean the same thing."

"With a lack of definition of who you are, anyone can say whatever they want," Jenson said.

Jenson visited the high school on Tuesday. 

"I saw 21 different versions of an Indian," he said. "Some of the things are not versions that I would have on the wall, but over the years, they're there. It is no wonder that someone might walk in and say that's offensive. And I might say, 'Yeah, that could probably come down.'"

With the new building in the works, Jenson said this is the best time to further focus on what it is to be a Hays High student.

"This is the best time for you to say this is who we are, this is what we look like, this is what our colors are. This is a chance for you to come closer with clarity and unite not a time to get further apart," Jenson said.

When asked about the current culture at the school, respondents also gave many positive answers including loyal, pride and innovative. Respondents also described the culture as white, resistant and stagnant. A survey respondent also said German.

"If someone drives by and sees your flag flying, what do you want them to say?" Jenson asked. "All I would say is get on the same page and you will be onto something that most schools are not onto."

Ruth Legleiter, Hays resident who had previously spoken at a school board meeting about the mascot, said she was very frustrated because she has sent emails to the school district about the rebranding committee and received no information in response.

She said she wanted to know who was going to be on the rebranding committee and how they are going to be selected. She has offered her services to that committee. She said she wants the school district to be more transparent in the rebranding process.

Jenson said he personally recommended school officials not take any steps to form a rebranding committee until after the rebranding community meeting Tuesday. He assured Legleiter the rebranding process would be transparent.

"I'm looking for the truth," Jenson said, "because when the truth is big enough and strong enough people will wrap themselves around it and connect to it and isn't that what we want?"

One community member said she thought grit and resilience best described the school and the bond process. She said Rockwell, in which the meeting took place, was built during World War I. She said that was a symbol of grit and resilience.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/56bcc42c-6bf4-4ecf-8b56-9a8218f5058a">Another audience member brought up the Kansas Board of Education's recent recommendation that all Kansas schools abandon Native American mascots within the next three to five years.</a>

Another audience member suggested the current images and symbols being used at the high school are not reflective of the native people who lived in the Hays area or Hays at all. These include the war bonnet and totem pole.

"I think if we are going to do something that is representative of something tough and resilient, I think we should find something that is representative of Hays, Kan.," he said.

At least one respondent to the survey suggested the high school retain the Indian mascot, but explore the true nature of what it means to be a Native American and honor that.

Yet another audience member said the emotion over the high school mascot was a symptom of a larger community problem.

"You have a community who wants to be exclusive and inclusive at the same time. It wants to be welcoming and build new schools and have new people come in but have nothing change in the process," he said.

He said Hays tends to be cliquish and can be a hard place to break into.

A woman said she moved to Hays a year and a half ago and said others like herself have considered leaving because of the attitude toward the mascot.

"What makes someone strong is admitting they made a mistake and fixing it," she said. That is what strength is. This community can choose to do that or it can dig in."

There was a question on the survey that asked about changing the middle school mascot to the Indians. Those answers were mixed. Many respondents wanted to know the costs of a change. Jenson said more discussion was needed.

Hays searches for unity in light of divisive debate on high school mascot

The 92nd&nbsp;annual 4-H Achievement Banquet was recently held at the Ellis County Fairgrounds in Hays to honor Ellis County&nbsp; 4-Hers.

Theresa Meis and Schneider Auction Service were recognized as the “Friends of 4-H” for their support of the Ellis County 4-H program during this past year.&nbsp;

Each 4-H club in the county has the opportunity to nominate a business and an individual who they feel have gone above and beyond the call of duty to help Ellis Co. 4-H. The Ellis Co. 4-H Council makes the final decision on who to recognize as a “Friend of 4-H."

This year’s individual Friend of 4-H is Theresa Meis. She was nominated by the Good Hope 4-H Club. Theresa went above and beyond at this year’s county fair. She is a treasure to Ellis County and puts her heart and soul into helping Ellis County youth. Thank you for your dedication to Ellis County 4-H, you truly are a Friend of 4-H!&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

This year’s business Friend of 4-H is Schneider Auction Service. We would like to thank Jason Schneider and John Kisner for their support of the Ellis County 4-H program. They were nominated by the Victoria Vikings 4-H club. Schneider Auction Services has helped with the livestock auction for several years. Schneider and Kisner do a fantastic job working the crowd and trying their best to get the most value they can for the 4-Her’s and their livestock projects. They are also seen out at the fair looking at exhibits and supporting the fair. Their service to the 4-Her’s and the livestock do not go unnoticed and they truly are a Friend of 4-H.

Congratulations and thank you to these individuals for their dedication to and support of Ellis County 4-H youth.

All&nbsp;Ellis County 4-H members present received their certificate of completion and were awarded their membership pins based on the number of years and level of involvement in the local and statewide 4-H program activities.

The evening concluded with the 4-H Scholarship &amp; Development Committee having a silent and live auction to raise money for 4-H camp and graduating senior scholarships.

Each recipient receives a copy of Danforth’s inspirational book, "I Dare You." Dakota’s reference wrote “I have known Dakota all his life and have had the ability to watch Dakota on both spectrums from struggling in life to only find success and character to be the young man he is today. I have seen Dakota lead and be a positive role model and help build character with many individuals. No person is a stranger to Dakota and he will lead and lift any individual he is surrounded by.”<figure>

92nd annual banquet honors Ellis County 4-Hers

RUSSELL — Russell Main Street, Inc. will kick off the Russell Christmas Celebration on Sat., Nov. 26 at 7:15, p.m. with the Lighted Christmas Parade.

The 2022 theme for the Christmas Celebration is "A Musical Christmas." The theme will be displayed during the Lighted Christmas Parade. The parade takes place in Downtown Russell beginning on 9th&nbsp;Street.

Everyone is welcome to participate in the parade; the only requirement is the entry is required to have lights. Entry into the parade is free and RMSI will award the top three places for best of parade. Deadline to register for the judging is Nov. 18.&nbsp;

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment on Wednesday reported 24 new COVID-19 cases had been identified in Ellis County from Nov. 5 to Nov. 11. 

KDHE reports updated case numbers weekly on Wednesdays.

Ellis County moved into the high-incidence category last week the KDHE reported. (See map below).&nbsp; Several other northwest Kansas counties were moved into or remained in the high-incidence category.

KDHE: 24 new COVID cases in Ellis Co. this reporting period

The Wheatland Electric Cooperative Board of Trustees has voted to retire $2.25 million in capital credits to eligible members (electric account holders), the largest payout in the cooperative’s nearly 75-year history.

This December, eligible members (Wheatland account holders, both past and present) who have accumulated at least $25 in credits will receive their payout in the form of a check during our Capital Credits Harvest Day on Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2022.

One of Wheatland Electric’s seven cooperative principles is members’ economic participation, which means members contribute equitably to and democratically control the capital of their cooperative.

Capital credits is just one way we honor this cooperative spirit, and why we’re inviting members to come “enjoy their slice of the pie” during our Dec. 6 event.

Members are invited to come pick up their capital credits check between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and can enjoy complimentary pie and other refreshments, first-come, first-served.

Because electric cooperatives like ours operate at a cost, any excess revenues (called margins) can be allocated to members in later years through capital credits. Trustees determine how and when to retire (pay out) capital credits when economically feasible.

Wheatland Electric has retired at least $1 million in capital credits every year for the last five years.

This year, co-op members from 1989, 1990, and 2021 are eligible for our record-setting payout, which trustees voted on in September.

The credit amount that an individual member receives is based on the amount of electricity used (kilowatt hours) during the payout year(s), and his or her duration of membership.

Of this year’s $2.25 million payout, $250,000 comes from Sunflower Electric Power Corp., our power supplier. Wheatland Electric is a distribution cooperative and a member of Sunflower, a generation and transmission cooperative.

Members, active or inactive, who do not pick up their capital credits checks on Capital Credits Harvest Day (Dec. 6) will have them mailed to their address of record.

In addition, eligible members who have not accumulated at least $25 in capital credits this year will not receive a check. However, they will not lose their payout amount. Instead, their retirement amount will be rolled over into a future year’s payout.

It is important that Wheatland Electric has the current mailing address of all inactive members (individuals not currently receiving service but who have received service in the past) to ensure the timely delivery of capital credits checks each year.

LA CROSSE — The Rush County Historical Society and Kansas Barbed Wire Museum will once again host the annual Old-Fashioned Christmas from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 25 at the museum complex in La Crosse. 

Visitors can browse the five unique museums beautifully decorated for the holidays: the Historical Museum in the 19th Century Timken Depot; the Post Rock Museum, one of the seven wonders of Kansas Customs; the Nekoma Bank Museum, a restored 1916 rural bank; the Pleasant Point School Museum; and nationally recognized Kansas Barbed Wire Museum. 

There will be live musical performances including piano and organ. Visitors can enjoy hot cider, homemade cookies, roast marshmallows over an open fire, or something new this year, extra-large Kansas-grown popcorn. There will also be a special project for the kids in the one-room school.

Santa Claus will arrive at 6 p.m. on the firetruck and hand out candy sacks to the kids in front of the bank museum. For kids of all ages, La Crosse Fire District #4 will be serving hot dogs and chocolate milk or water.

There will be a special display of antique toys in the Pleasant Point One-Room School Museum. The century-old school is a time capsule of early 20th-century rural education with nearly all of its original furnishings and books.

Events begin at 5 p.m., Friday, Nov. 26 at the museum campus on the south edge of La Crosse on West First Street. To ease congestion, visitors are asked to park north of the creek on Third Street across the bridge. Visitors can access the complex by the footbridge in the park. Persons with mobility issues are welcome to park in the museum parking lot.

La Crosse hosts annual Old-Fashioned Christmas

RUSSELL — The Deines Cultural Center welcomes its newest art exhibition with Rebel Mahieu and her show: Master of Ceremonies.

Rebel was born in Beloit in 1972 and grew up on a farm north of Glen Elder. She received an associate of arts degree from Cloud County Community College, studied commercial design at Kansas State University, and received a B.A. in art education with an emphasis in printmaking from Fort Hays State University in 1995. 

She then taught art for eight years, coached basketball and helped STUCO students build floats for parades at Ruppenthal Middle School in Russell, Kansas. 

In 2012, Rebel received a MLS degree in sculpture from Fort Hays State University and is now in her 15th year of teaching art at Colby Community College; she absolutely loves working with students to encourage them to experiment with materials and ideas and to promote art/artists in the community.

When Rebel is creating she enjoys using layers of various materials in a mixed medium style. In her layers you will see symbols, color, and texture used to express an idea or moment in time.
