As residents awoke on the recent Veterans Day, 1,400 American flags
were being placed in residential yards and at businesses throughout Hays. The popular fundraising project is undertaken by nearly 40 members and
volunteers of the local Kiwanis Club. They start at daylight and remove the flags as the
sun sets.

There are currently six known World War II veterans living in Ellis County. Four of the men were honored during the Nov. 11 event Each man is in his late 90s or a centenarian.

They are Robert
Pfeifer, 95, Army; Don Bickle, Sr., 95, Navy; Dan Hoffman, who will celebrate his 100th birthday in March, Navy; Arris Johnson, 101, Army, Warren Hall, 101, Navy; and Al Dreiling, 102, Army.

Stan
Dreiling, Hays, has headed the VFW Post 9076 Honor Guard for military funerals since 1972. Since January 1 of this year, Dreiling has
overseen 39 military funerals.

Over the years, the local military honor guard has conducted 1,400 funerals at grave sites when requested or given permission by
the family to be present at these funerals. They have fielded requests from
other families that have taken place in nearby communities outside of Ellis County and have been seen at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery in WaKeeney on
some occasions.

Various
speakers spoke at the gathering inside of the VFW Hall.

Most touching, and producing moist eyes by many that attended, was the guest speaker, Crystal Hendricks of Hays. Hendricks is an Air Force military veteran, along with her
husband and brother, having served in combat zones overseas. Her grandfather was
the most inspirational figure in her life, she told the crowd, alluding to his military experience
in World War II.

Post
Commander Chris Stegman provided the greetings and introductions of speakers
and called for audience members having served in the military to stand and be
recognized for their various branches of service.

Following
her presentation, Mariella Dreiling was announced as the winner of the Voice of
Democracy contest and spoke on behalf of Savannah Clingan and Tristan Legleiter
who all will be entered into the state competition. They were introduced
by the VFW Auxiliary Commander Kathy Schupman.

Bob Munsch, Marine Corps League, assisted by Peter Unrein and Fred Weilert demonstrating the 13 folds of the American flag presented at funerals.

Members of
the Hays VFW include Merle McLaren and Gary Albrecht who have served in both
the Korean and Viet Nam wars.

Four
musical numbers were suang by local talent Bob Dreiling, which was well
received by the audience.

A special thank you to Stan Dreiling for his help in providing the
military information and accurate listing of names by those who were mentioned.

🎥 Veterans Day in Hays thanks six remaining local WWII vets 

With an eye to the critical role agriculture plays in the lives of Kansans, Dr. Grady Dixon, dean of the Peter Werth College of Science, Technology and Mathematics, and Ken Rahjes, Kansas District 110 representative, launched a pilot agricultural forum. The event, held Monday in the FHSU Robbins Center, was funded by Fort Hays State University as part of its mission to serve Kansas residents.

“If you live in Kansas, no matter what your occupation or your hobbies or interest, you are doing ag in one way or another,” Dixon said in his welcome to the group of approximately 50 attendees. “We should be better about getting everybody involved. So, we hope to get the conversations going today.”

Issues and perspectives of eight guest speakers representing several agriculture industry sectors were presented throughout the day. Speakers included: Steve Fenton, Midland Marketing; Kent Dunn, vice president of Kansas Cotton Association; John Grabbe, co-owner Grabbe Farms; Chad McCormick, Grant County Feeders; Landon Oldham, founder/owner Heartland Soil Services; Brant Peterson, district 3 commissioner, Kansas Grain Sorghum; Dan Senestraro, owner Eastside Dairy; and Jace Young, founder, and CEO, Legacy Farmer, LLC.

Rahjes led a legislative panel at the close of the day’s presentations and spoke about the value of sharing ideas.

“We wanted to highlight what is going on in Kansas,” Rahjes said. “And give stakeholders a chance to interact with legislators. A real opportunity for them to hear from you.”

Other legislators on the panel included: Sen. Mary Ware, Wichita; Rep. Bill Clifford, Garden City; Rep. Jim Minnix, Scott City; and Sen. John Doll, Garden City. During the panel discussion, the legislators discussed property tax relief, water concerns, and potential markets to move commodities.&nbsp;

“My impression is that ag-industry practitioners and state legislators both saw significant value in the ag forum,” Dixon said. “I hope to continue something similar in future years.”

Broad range of ag topics discussed at FHSU forum

Can the three newly elected Kansas State Board of Education members move the agenda to the far right? &nbsp;We’ll soon find out.&nbsp;&nbsp;

While the much-hyped red wave didn’t materialize at the national level, Republicans took all five open seats in the Nov. 8 state board elections, gaining a seven to three advantage over Democrats.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The new board majority may move to advance more, and more rigorous, conservative positions. During the campaign, the three conservative Republican candidates’ views focused consistently on limiting discussion of gender, sexuality and race; banning books; and requiring all curriculum and materials to receive the parents’ approval before being given to students.

&nbsp;The three conservatives also supported “school choice,” a term that means allowing parents to claim the portion of state tax dollars going to their child’s education and use it for private schools or other not assessed nor audited learning expenses.&nbsp;

&nbsp;According to a report by KCUR the National Public Radio Kansas City affiliate, the conservative candidates’ campaign websites used similar language projecting a unified front on these issues.&nbsp;

In the past, KSDE board members have worked across party lines to support a moderate agenda, even though Republicans outnumbered Democrats on the board.&nbsp;

It’s not yet clear just how much the three new conservative board members can shift Kansas education agendas by moving the party that holds voting control toward national right-wing policies.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In general, the Kansas Legislature makes the laws governing K-12 education and it’s&nbsp;the responsibility of KSDE to carry out these laws including how curriculum is implemented.&nbsp;

November election results pushed the Legislature farther right and allowed Republicans to maintain a two-thirds supermajority. Nevertheless, Republicans, even with a supermajority in the Legislature last year, could not override a Parents’ Rights Bill or a bill prohibiting transgender students from athletic competition. Both bills were vetoed by Democrat Laura Kelly who will return for a second term as governor.&nbsp;

The November failure of an amendment giving the Legislature&nbsp;veto power to suspend rules and regulations written by executive branch agencies under control of the governor, also will make it difficult for&nbsp;a Republican controlled Legislature and KSDE board to make ultra-conservative changes in policies governed by state law.&nbsp;

Yet, the state board has considerable power to shape the way education laws are put into practice such as how subjects are taught, teacher licensure and graduation requirements.&nbsp;

Despite three of the open board seats going unopposed to Republicans, Kansans spoke through the election and the signal is clear. It’s time, within the legal framework of state and federal equity laws, to pump-the-breaks on school issues many in the public find unhelpful, such as explicit gender/sexuality education in Kindergarten to grade three classes.

There are serious issues to be addressed—teacher shortages; funding of special education; academic improvement, especially in math and reading in the lower grades—culture wars aside.&nbsp;

The hope is that relations on the state board don’t deteriorate, calm will prevail and special interests will give way to working through common concerns.&nbsp;

It really doesn’t matter which political party holds the majority of votes on the KSDE board as long as each of the members put the best interests of Kansas schools above party loyalties. &nbsp;

INSIGHT KANSAS: Will conservatives control state school board?

Due to the Thanksgiving Holiday on Thursday and Friday, there will be changes to the 
refuse and recycling pickup schedule. Monday pickup will not change. 
Tuesday and Wednesday routes will be picked up on Tuesday Nov. 22, and 
Thursday and Friday routes will be picked up on Wednesday, Nov. 23.&nbsp;

It
 is anticipated that heavy volumes of refuse/recyclable will be 
encountered around the holidays. Set bags out by 
7 a.m. on the collection day and keep in mind that the trucks have no 
set time schedule.

Those flu bugs are nasty this year, and with so many families spending time together over

the holidays, it is likely that you or someone close to you will catch it. &nbsp;The information that crosses my desk about avoiding contagious illnesses is consistent. WASH YOUR HANDSOFTEN. &nbsp;Washing your hands at every step in the food preparation process will certainly help from spreading those germs. &nbsp;Whenever you touch your face or hair, or after sneezing or coughing into your hand you will want to wash. Reminding children to wash up after they have been playing outside, or with the family pet is another key.&nbsp;

The correct way to wash hands is to wet them with warm water, lather the soap and rinse; a process that should take around 20 seconds. Make sure you&nbsp;wash the cuticle area and around jewelry especially well.&nbsp;Keep a clean hand towel near every sink or consider switching to paper towels that can be disposed of.&nbsp;&nbsp;The use of hand sanitizers may sound like a good idea but when we have used our&nbsp;“glow&nbsp;germ”&nbsp;activity we found lots of germs survive the use of such cleansers. The use of warm water and soap works best.

Of course there are some other things you can do to avoid becoming ill. &nbsp;Getting plenty of rest and eating right, including lots of fruits and vegetables&nbsp;that are chock full of immune boosting vitamins&nbsp;is a great idea. Make time in your day for some quiet time to reflect and relax. Keeping the stress level down will help promote health. Limit visits with people who have a compromised immune system, especially if you have any symptoms of illness.

KRUG: Spread joy, not germs this holiday season

ELLIS COUNTY—Three people avoided injury when a small plane made a belly landing just after 1p.m. Saturday in Ellis County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1965 Mooney M20E piloted by John Michael Hershey, 58, Monument, Colorado, was making a final landing approach to Hays Regional Airport. The manual landing gear failed to fully engage. 

Upon landing, the landing gear collapsed under the aircraft and it made a belly landing on the runway.

Hershey and two passengers were not injured. The KHP reported no additional details.

 </figure>ELLIS COUNTY—Three people avoided injury when a small plane made a belly landing just after 1p.m. Saturday in Ellis County.The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1965 Mooney M20E piloted by John Michael Hershey, 58, Monument, Colorado, was making a final landing approach to Hays Regional Airport. The manual landing gear failed to fully engage. Upon landing, the landing gear collapsed under the aircraft and it made a belly landing on the runway.Hershey and two passengers were not injured. The KHP reported no additional details.

Today we’ll meet a small town Kansas law firm that specializes in helping clients across the nation protect their intellectual property.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Attorney Daniel Coughlin is founder and principal of the Coughlin Law Office LLC in Sabetha.&nbsp; Stuart Aller is the patent agent in the law firm.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Coughlin is a Michigan native.&nbsp;While earning a doctorate in biochemistry at the University of Michigan, he researched a product that was thought to be patentable.&nbsp;“I was intrigued by the patent process,” he said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Coughlin earned a law degree at the University of Toledo.&nbsp;Through a church youth group, he met and later married Tamra who was born in Sabetha.&nbsp;While working his way through law school, Coughlin built and programmed control panels at a Sabetha manufacturing company.&nbsp; He recognized that patents help encourage inventors by protecting their innovative ideas.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In 2012, he opened the Coughlin Law Office in Sabetha.&nbsp;Over time, he found a niche in developing and filing patents for his clients.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In 2020, Hiawatha native Stuart Aller joined the firm.&nbsp;Aller graduated from K-State with life science degrees and worked as a scientist for the State of Kansas before moving back to his hometown to teach.&nbsp;Aller met Coughlin and started doing technical writing for the firm during the summers. Aller became interested in the patent work that supports innovation. &nbsp;&nbsp;

“I’ve always been interested in science and technology,” Aller said.&nbsp;He sat for the patent bar exam, which is a specialized form of legal certification.&nbsp;“There’s something like a 40% pass rate,” he said.&nbsp;“It was definitely the hardest exam I’ve ever taken.”&nbsp;

Aller passed and, in 2020, became certified by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office as a registered patent agent. He joined the Coughlin firm in offering their KanPat® intellectual property services.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“An inventor will come in with some idea and we will work though it to identify the key factors that make it new and unique,” Coughlin said.&nbsp;Then they develop a proposed filing complete with technical drawings and explanations. Ultimately this is filed with the U.S. Patent Office.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“It is not necessarily a quick process,” Coughlin said.&nbsp;Filings are subject to in-depth review by patent examiners.&nbsp; “Depending on various factors, it can take 2-3 years at the fastest or up to 5-6 years for a patent to issue. However, ‘patent pending’ can usually be achieved in just a few days or weeks.”&nbsp;

“(Working with clients) is one of the best parts of the job,” he said.&nbsp;

Coughlin Law Office recently worked with a K-State student to patent an improved hitch pin.&nbsp;In another case, they worked with an inventor who had been turned away by a big city law firm, but Coughlin and Aller ultimately obtained a patent for him.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Sabetha is a fruitful home base for the company due to the multiple innovative manufacturers found in the community.&nbsp;However, the firm’s reputation has grown far beyond the region.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Coughlin Law Office has done patent work for clients across the nation, from Florida to Washington state.&nbsp;They have also done international work on intellectual property protection in such places as Japan, Brazil, Australia and South Africa.&nbsp;

Now That’s Rural: Daniel Coughlin, Coughlin Law Firm 

NCK Tech Foundation has announced its first two Hall of Fame awards at our Beloit and Hays Campuses that were bestowed during Founders’ Week (Nov. 14 to 18). NCK Tech honored a former instructor and administrator who was one of the first employees of the College in Beloit and honored a key benefactor who helped establish our NCK Tech Hays Campus in 1980.

The roots of North Central Kansas Technical College and all other vocational-technical schools in Kansas were established when Senate Bill 438 passed the Kansas&nbsp;legislature in 1963.&nbsp;In November 1963, Beloit was authorized as one of only six&nbsp;vocational-technical schools in the state at that time, the&nbsp;smallest community to receive such a school.

The start of 1964 saw the city of Beloit with the foundation&nbsp;of a vocational school, but what appeared to be the impossible&nbsp;task of preparing to offer classes in only a few short months.&nbsp;By mid-April, 1964 the first step had been taken to remedy this situation when the first of four instructors committed to join the&nbsp;faculty.&nbsp;Bob Severance, a young vocational agriculture teacher at Simpson High School, was the first person to sign a contract.

Although recruited as a vocational agriculture and welding instructor during the tech school's first days, Severance soon&nbsp;found himself with different duties. Besides teaching production&nbsp;ag and welding, Severance devoted much of his time to public&nbsp;relations during the formative years of the school.&nbsp;His appointment as director (president) in 1967 would span the next quarter-&nbsp;century of the school's existence, and his vision and guidance are&nbsp;evident in nearly every phase of its growth.&nbsp;Bob&nbsp;served in that capacity until his retirement in 1992.

“As a strong supporter of NCK Tech from day one, Bob Severance has paved the way for other Trailblazers over the years. Education and the development of skills in our future workforce has truly been his passion in life and NCK Tech and the community of Beloit have benefitted from years of Bob’s leadership,” said NCK Tech President Eric Burks.

In 1980,&nbsp;St. Anthony's Hospital donated 25 acres for use of the Hays NCK Technical College campus of which Leo J. and Albina Dreiling were instrumental in securing this donation. A few months later, in October 1980, Leo J. and&nbsp;Albina Dreiling made a gift to the school of&nbsp;$100,000 to be used specifically for bringing sewer, electrical,&nbsp;gas and water hook-ups to the newly-established campus. At the same time the campus layout for the Hays satellite location was accepted.&nbsp;

The Leo J. and Albina Dreiling Charitable Trust was&nbsp;instrumental in the success of the expansion of technical programs on the Hays Campus by providing a&nbsp;$25,000 donation in 1985 to pay the cost of remodeling the former carpentry building for use by the licensed practical nursing and&nbsp;applied data processing departments. The&nbsp;Dreiling’s&nbsp;were also influential in a variety of fundraising campaigns for the College as well.

“During their lifetimes, Leo J. and Albina Dreiling were gracious and benevolent people. They would be extremely proud to know that their tradition of supporting important community projects is being continued by the current Trustees of the Dreiling Charitable Trust. The names Leo J. and Albina Dreiling adorn many buildings and programs in this area. Their kind and sincere involvement with projects&nbsp;havemade Hays a better place to learn, work and live,” said NCK Tech President Eric Burks.

Kraig Gross accepted the award in honor of his grandparents.

Hays High entered the state semi-finals for just the third time in school history. The #3 Indians traveled to #1 Maize on Friday night. Hays the second seed in 5A West and the Eagles the top seed.

TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has rescinded a boil water advisory for the city of Alexander public water supply system located in Rush County. The advisory was issued because of a failure to maintain required chlorine residual levels.

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Laboratory testing samples collected from the City of Alexander public water supply system indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved.

COLBY — The Trojans men's cross country team continues to be honored after winning the national championship on Nov. 12. This week, the U.S. Track &amp; Field and Cross Country Coaches Association named Sanele Masondo the Men's Athlete of the Year and Brady Johnson the Men's Coach of the Year. Member coaches voted on the awards following the NJCAA Division I Cross Country Championships.

Masondo, a sophomore from Kwazulu Natal, South Africa, capped his undefeated season with the individual title at the 2022 NJCAA Division I Cross Country Championships in 24:07.2. He also won the individual title at the Region VI Cross Country Championships in 23:31.6, as well as the Greeno/Dirksen Invitational and the Chile Pepper Festival. Twice during the season, he was the USTFCCCA athlete of the week.

Under Johnson, the Trojans won the program's first national championship and the school's first team crown since 1999. Led by individual winner Masondo, the Trojans dominated the NJCAA Cross Country Division I Championships with four top-10 finishers to score 38 points and win by 87 points. Colby also claimed the title at the Region VI Cross Country Championships, winning by 42 points.

Johnson has coached at Colby Community College since 2019. The Plainville native led his squad to a 2021 region championship and a third-place finish at the national meet.

RUSSELL — A Christmas Galleria is seeking to raise funds for a new accessible play park in Russell.

The community already has raised about $40,000 toward the $1 million project, which will replace equipment that has aged out in Memorial Park next to the fairgrounds. With fencing and accessories, the project will need closer to $1.5 million.

The Arc of the Central Plains, which also lent support to a similar project in Hays, is mentoring the Russell group, said Kathy McAdoo, Arc executive director and Russell resident.

McAdoo said she hopes community members will take the time to research the project. Accessible equipment and surfacing are more expensive than standard playground equipment.

Although mulch is Americans with Disabilities Act compliant, most people who use walkers and wheelchairs can't navigate through it, which means parks that use mulch as ground cover are not accessible, McAdoo said.

The Russell Park will have similar equipment and surfacing to the ARC Park in Hays with different colors and themes, McAdoo said. The Russell group is working with the same companies as Hays.

The new equipment will include accessible swings, zip line, we-g0-round, play structures with ramps, sensory equipment, musical equipment and a quiet place for children who become overstimulated.

McAdoo said Russell residents have been watching the development of the ARC Park in Hays and decided when it was time to replace the equipment at Memorial Park, they wanted to replace it with accessible equipment.

"Not only are there kids and adults there who will be thrilled to have it," she said, " but also people in the neighboring communities around Russell. They also get a fair amount of I-70 traffic and a number of ball tournaments that come through Russell. It's kind of a natural thing."

McAdoo said accessible parks allow all kids to play side by side—something they may not be able to do at school.

"Here they are all playing, and there are no barriers and they can just be themselves," she said.

Volunteers hope to have the project completed within two years, McAdoo said.

The project is still in its infancy, McAdoo said. However, all funds raised in Russell will stay in Russell.

The Christmas Galleria in Russell is an attempt to replicate the Festival of Trees in Hays that has raised funds for the Hays ARC Park.

The Galleria is offering 45 items, including decorated Christmas trees, wreaths, holiday tabletop displays and outdoor decor. Almost all of the materials for the decorations were donated and the same volunteers who created the pieces for the Hays Festival of Trees created pieces for the Russell Galleria.

"This is a unique fundraiser for Russell," McAdoo said. "This is the first time anything like this has been done. We are hoping to add something to the holiday season in Russell—another fun activity, another way to connect the community and bring people out to see what other folks have created.

"Russell is a very giving community."

The
 online auction is live now and will run through 5 p.m. Monday. A link to the auction will be on the home page of the

Christmas Galleria to raise funds for accessible Russell Play Park

There were no changes in the Nov. 8 general
election results following canvassing Thursday by the Ellis County
Commission.

Of the 90 provisional votes, 65 were accepted, according to
Election Officer and County Clerk Bobbi Dreiling.

“And those were all because either the voter
lived in county and changed addresses or changed names," she said. "There was one we could
not find their name in the poll book but they were eligible to vote.”

The 25 ballots rejected were due to the voters not being
registered in Ellis County. &nbsp;There were
no discrepancies found in the results.

The only contested race was for state representative 111th District, pitting incumbent Republican Barb Wasinger against Democratic newcomer Ed Hammond, both of Hays. Wasinger defeated Hammond by a considerable margin — 5,038 to 3,291.

Commissioners thanked Dreiling and her staff who conducted
four elections this year — the primary and general elections as well as special elections regarding bond issues for the Hays and Ellis school districts.&nbsp;

"I've heard nothing but good things about how your office has handed all these elections this year, including the special elections," said Joe Leroux, Third District commissioner.

"I appreciate that," Dreiling responded with a big smile. "I have the best election board workers."

There were also some write-ins for Ellis County the nine township clerks and four of those were tied.

So Dreiling had commissioners draw the candidate names out of a small wicker basket.

Results for the tied township races were:&nbsp;

Big Creek Township - Jamie Graham Victoria Township -Jerry Brungardt Lookout Township - Larry Reichert Wheatland Township - Todd Neiman&nbsp;

The winners will be sent an official certificate with the option to decline the office, Dreiling explained.

As required by state law, a post-audit was conducted by hand of one percent of the county's 34 precincts. That included Ward 3, Precinct 1, Commission District 1, 111th state house district, and the constitutional amendment question regarding election of sheriffs.

"They were all perfect — matched the machine results — after our hand count," Dreiling reported.&nbsp;

Voter turnout was 54.35 percent. Out of a total 19,526 registered voters, there were 10,612 ballots cast.&nbsp;

A longtime campus tradition returns,&nbsp;celebrating the holiday season and the planting of our two evergreen trees&nbsp;at&nbsp;Fort Hays State University.

The holiday tree-lighting ceremony will be in front of Sheridan Hall. The event&nbsp;is&nbsp;open to the public&nbsp;and will begin at&nbsp;5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29.&nbsp;

The university’s Dickens Carolers will perform. A variety of activities will follow the tree lighting, including crafts and cookie decorating, a coloring page contest, kids’ train rides, and photos with Santa Claus. The first 200 people will have the opportunity to receive a holiday-themed FHSU long-sleeved T-shirt&nbsp;and coffee/ hot chocolate from Breathe Coffee.

The event is sponsored by several FHSU offices and organizations: the Office of Student Engagement,&nbsp;the Office of the President, and Residential Life.&nbsp;

The awards are given by Kansas PRIDE — a partnership of K-State Research and Extension — the Kansas Department of Commerce, Kansas Masons and Kansas PRIDE Inc.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Jamie Menon, co-coordinator of Kansas PRIDE, said&nbsp;the Community of Excellence award is for those communities that have completed a community assessment, address opportunities for community improvement and continuously work to identify and meet needs of their community.&nbsp;

The winners for the 2022 Community of Excellence Awards Designation are:&nbsp;

• Delia • Highland • Russell • Vermillion

Communities of Excellence are designated for a three-year period in which they can apply for multiple grants from Kansas PRIDE to address community needs.&nbsp;

Menon said the communities were recognized for their efforts to identify what they want to preserve, create&nbsp;or improve for the future.&nbsp;

She notes local PRIDE volunteers work with K-State Research and Extension and the Kansas Department of Commerce to accomplish the community’s goals.&nbsp;“There are some communities that go above and beyond with their workload, and the Kansas PRIDE office would like to give them recognition,” she said.&nbsp;

“PRIDE groups work hard to make their community a better place to live and work,” Menon said. “They all deserve recognition for the benefits their projects bring to their communities.”&nbsp;

Hays PD Activity Log, Nov. 6-12     

I first learned to hunt deer with a group of neighbors where I grew-up in Ohio. 

We all had our&nbsp;favorite&nbsp;stands or places to sit for the first couple days of deer season, then if we hadn’t yet harvested a deer, we would get together as a group to move deer&nbsp;through a wood-lot&nbsp;somewhere&nbsp;towards waiting hunters. 

Here in Kansas, I have harvested several deer from stands or blinds strategically placed along travel routes or at&nbsp;natural&nbsp;feeding spots. When we built our raised blind years ago, we hung a corn feeder in a draw in front of the blind. Squirrels chewed a hole in the bottom of the feeder, so we tried another.&nbsp;Unhappy with that feeder, we began&nbsp;simply&nbsp;scattering buckets of shelled corn, ear corn, apples or pears&nbsp;on the ground&nbsp;over an area the size of a couple houses, which we still do today.&nbsp;

Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is a very infectious and deadly disease that was first discovered in our KS wild deer in 2005 in the northwestern part of the state, and has steadily spread south and eastward&nbsp;across Kansas. While&nbsp;conservation professionals are not certain of all the ways in which CWD spreads, they agree that the most prevalent seems to be from direct deer-to-deer contact, through saliva, urine, feces etc.

A friend frequently attends the open meetings held around the state where the public is invited to listen to, and to comment on topics such as proposed hunting season dates, etc. and topics of concern such as CWD. He told me that a topic of discussion at the last meeting he attended this summer was whether or not feeding and baiting deer&nbsp;aids in the transmission of CWD, and the possibility of making that practice illegal here in KS arose. A brochure about Chronic Wasting Disease available from the Kansas Dept. of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) states that “Concentrating deer and elk by artificial feeding or baiting probably increases the likelihood of both direct and indirect transmission between individuals” (meaning deer and elk.) A&nbsp;recent post on the KDWP Facebook page urges hunters not to feed or bait deer, and a topic at the early September open-meeting at Kansas City was a proposal to disallow bait&nbsp;for deer&nbsp;to be placed on KDWP managed lands and on all land enrolled in the popular walk-in hunting program.

As one would expect, the KDWP Facebook post urging people not to bait or feed deer&nbsp;as a way to help slow the spread of CWD&nbsp;drew a multitude of comments, with those in support of feeding deer far outnumbering those against it. Comments supporting banning the practice offered little factual information, most merely stating their opposition to feeding&nbsp;and&nbsp;baiting deer, and that deer should be hunted “the old-fashioned way.”&nbsp;Comments supporting&nbsp;feeding and baiting deer often mentioned the fact that many deer naturally feed on the same alfalfa, corn stubble, soybean stubble and new wheat fields, making the commentor wonder how deer feeders are a problem.&nbsp;

We feed deer mostly to get them comfortable with browsing in front of our blind. Last season, I was seeing the same five does and fawns every morning. My sister on who’s property our blind&nbsp;stands, had never spent time with us in the blind during hunting season, so I took her with me one morning. I had prayed that God would at least allow us to see the same five deer that morning, but to our amazement, He brought us fourteen! For forty-five minutes, she got to watch fawns run and play like lambs, and young bucks spar with each other, none of which would have happened had the scattered corn not invited them to&nbsp;pause and&nbsp;browse on&nbsp;their&nbsp;way through to a nearby bedding area.&nbsp;

If corn is being fed to deer by dumping it in a&nbsp;big&nbsp;pile on the ground where every critter from miles around can come and eat from that same pile, I can see how that could&nbsp;concentrate&nbsp;saliva, urine and feces there. But&nbsp;I’m not convinced&nbsp;at all&nbsp;that scattering corn and apples in a large area like we do, or using a battery-powered corn feeder that flings a small amount of corn at&nbsp;a&nbsp;time over a broad area will contribute to the spread of Chronic Wasting Disease.&nbsp;I understand the argument, but color me skeptical. He told me that a topic of discussion at the last meeting he attended this summer was whether or not feeding and baiting deer&nbsp;aids in the transmission of CWD, and the possibility of making that practice illegal here in KS arose. A brochure about Chronic Wasting Disease available from the Kansas Dept. of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) states that “Concentrating deer and elk by artificial feeding or baiting probably increases the likelihood of both direct and indirect transmission between individuals” (meaning deer and elk.) A&nbsp;recent post on the KDWP Facebook page urges hunters not to feed or bait deer, and a topic at the early September open-meeting at Kansas City was a proposal to disallow bait&nbsp;for deer&nbsp;to be placed on KDWP managed lands and on all land enrolled in the popular walk-in hunting program.As one would expect, the KDWP Facebook post urging people not to bait or feed deer&nbsp;as a way to help slow the spread of CWD&nbsp;drew a multitude of comments, with those in support of feeding deer far outnumbering those against it. Comments supporting banning the practice offered little factual information, most merely stating their opposition to feeding&nbsp;and&nbsp;baiting deer, and that deer should be hunted “the old-fashioned way.”&nbsp;Comments supporting&nbsp;feeding and baiting deer often mentioned the fact that many deer naturally feed on the same alfalfa, corn stubble, soybean stubble and new wheat fields, making the commentor wonder how deer feeders are a problem.&nbsp;We feed deer mostly to get them comfortable with browsing in front of our blind. Last season, I was seeing the same five does and fawns every morning. My sister on who’s property our blind&nbsp;stands, had never spent time with us in the blind during hunting season, so I took her with me one morning. I had prayed that God would at least allow us to see the same five deer that morning, but to our amazement, He brought us fourteen! For forty-five minutes, she got to watch fawns run and play like lambs, and young bucks spar with each other, none of which would have happened had the scattered corn not invited them to&nbsp;pause and&nbsp;browse on&nbsp;their&nbsp;way through to a nearby bedding area.&nbsp;If corn is being fed to deer by dumping it in a&nbsp;big&nbsp;pile on the ground where every critter from miles around can come and eat from that same pile, I can see how that could&nbsp;concentrate&nbsp;saliva, urine and feces there. But&nbsp;I’m not convinced&nbsp;at all&nbsp;that scattering corn and apples in a large area like we do, or using a battery-powered corn feeder that flings a small amount of corn at&nbsp;a&nbsp;time over a broad area will contribute to the spread of Chronic Wasting Disease.&nbsp;I understand the argument, but color me skeptical.
