Two annexation requests and a request of support of housing tax credits will be addressed at today’s Hays city commission meeting.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Both annexation requests, for property adjacent to 1100 E. 43rd Street and for properties located near 230th Avenue and 55th Street, would be for future business developments, according to Toby Dougherty, Hays city manager.&nbsp;

Old Town Development, Inc., is asking the commission for support in its housing tax credit application for a 40-unit, low income apartment complex near 22nd and Wheatland.&nbsp;

Further discussion on a potential traffic roundabout at 27th and Canterbury will continue. A test with a temporary roundabout by city staff earlier this month at the intersection went very well, according to Dougherty. “City staff feels&nbsp; that a roundabout would be beneficial at that location and that the work could be performed in-house, " he said.

The commission will also hear from the ARC Park non-profit group, which will ask for permission to proceed with phase three of park enhancements.&nbsp;

RUSSELL - A household hazardous waste drop-off day will be held in Russell on Saturday, April 22.

Get rid of old paint, stains, varnishes, indoor and outdoor insecticides, weed killers and drain cleaners along with e-waste like cellphones, computers and TVs. This is for household waste only.

No commercial hazardous waste, medical waste, used motor oil or mercury.

Russell to host hazardous waste drop-off day Saturday morning

This weekend, Thomas More Prep-Marian students are set to hit the stage for their production of William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream.

And while the over 400-year-old play is a well-known staple, this performance will feature an Art Deco twist and has been adapted for the annual TMP-M play.

"It's a 'twist on an old story,' " said Travis Grizzell, director and TMP-M&nbsp;English, drama, debate and forensics instructor. "We are
setting it in the 1920s, the Jazz Age, with all the guys in the three-piece
suits and the flapper girls. It takes place in Athens, Greece, and we got the
1920s theme kind of rolling with Art Deco set design and a lot of fun stuff in
that way."

He said while the language used by Shakespeare can sometimes be difficult for young performers, the story remains timeless and universal.

"It's not exactly a language or a script that we're used to," Grizzell said. But "once we get up on the stage and moving, I use the analogy that Shakespeare is kind of like opera, even if you don't get all the language, if it's done right, you pretty well get the gist of it.

"For 400 or so years, he had this great talent for finding out what motivates us and how we're affected with emotions and circumstances and conflict," he continued. "And it translates well to just about any time period because it's just about that human condition."

Along with adapting the visuals to Art Deco, the script was adapted for length. Grizzell said the show will run around an hour and 45 minutes and will be presented without an intermission.

While some of Shakespeare's work can be "heavy" he said this play resonates with youth.

"A Midsummer Night's Dream is fun," Grizzell said. "It's a bunch of fairies. It's young lovers. And it plays really well with high school students because these young lovers are so emotional, and it's a lot like Romeo and Juliet&nbsp;in that they are force-fed that 'I'm in love. I know because I've seen him, and I've known him for 15 minutes, that kind of thing.' And it all plays out. It's a happy ending. It's not a tragedy. And it's just fun and relatable."

Nearly 40 TMP-M students have worked to bring the performance to the stage, including longtime performers and those taking the stage for the first time.

"It's
just been an absolute blast with this group rehearsing and getting ready for Shakespeare," Grizzell said.&nbsp;

He said it is especially rewarding watching students grow from that anxiousness into convincing performers.

"From my perspective, and my assistant director,&nbsp;Wendy Richmeier, we saw when we were handing out the script, and they're glossily eyed, and they're like, 'Dude, there's no way we can do this,' " Grizzell said.

But from those initial impressions, he said the students took to the play and made it their own.

"Some of these students, they absolutely bloom and take off," Grizzell said. "And we've got some amazing kids doing some amazing stuff.

"These kids, some of them really, they dig in, they prioritize, and they work their little tails off to make this stuff happen," Grizzell said. "And that is a huge project. And it culminates in the span of three days, and then they're done. So it's a cool thing. It really is."

The result is a show anyone can enjoy, he said.

"If you go multiple times, or if you just check it out once, I can almost guarantee you won't totally regret going. You'll have a good time," Grizzell said. "You'll feel good about supporting the art, supporting the students, and you'll be cultured now because you've been exposed to 'The Bard' Mr. Shakespeare."

Performances of&nbsp;A Midsummer Night's Dream&nbsp;are set to be performed in the school's Dreiling Theater at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

🎙 Iconic Shakespeare play gets Art Deco treatment during TMP-M spring production

Campus Compact, a Boston-based non-profit organization working to advance the public purposes of higher education, has named 154 student civic leaders from 38 states, Washington, D.C., and Mexico, to the 2023 cohort of Newman Civic Scholars. The list for this coming school year includes Fort Hays State University sophomore Ella Burrows.

The Newman Civic Fellowship recognizes students who stand out for their commitment to creating positive change in communities locally and around the world. Fellows are nominated by Campus Compact member presidents and chancellors, who are invited to select one outstanding student from their campus each year.

“It means a lot to see the work that I’ve done has been recognized,” Burrows said. “Through the Newman Fellowship, I’ll be able to learn more and bring that back to Fort Hays to continue to get more students civically engaged.”

Burrows, a political science major with a pre-law emphasis, will begin her term as a fellow in the fall of 2023. She will attend a conference in Boston next October, where leadership, professional development, and civic engagement opportunities will be available.&nbsp;

In the fall, she will also begin her term as Student Government Association president, duties of which will intersect nicely with her Newman Fellow term.

Burrows is passionate about civic engagement and is working with the Student Affairs Committee of the Faculty Senate to examine student voter registration and other issues surrounding voting on the FHSU campus. &nbsp;

She credits much of her interest in civic engagement and community development to her upbringing in Satanta, a community of just 1,092 people.

“Our town is so small, it is fighting to survive out in western Kansas,” she said. “My whole path is to get people engaged, and eventually, I’d love to get into politics and do policy research and create policies that benefit all of western Kansas.”

In her personal statement, Burrows points out that her community “raised me to advocate fiercely for the least, the last, and the lost.”

Burrows has served as a freshman senator in SGA and legislative affairs director. In addition, she has been a student coordinator for the American Democracy Project, peer mentor to the Honors College, and peer academic leader to the Law, Politics and Justice Living and Learning Community. THOMAS COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 9p.m. Wednesday in Thomas County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2019 Freightliner semi driven by Lasha&nbsp;Niniashvili, 26, Brooklyn, New York, was eastbound on Interstate 70 at County Road 2 when a gust a wind caused the trailer to swing over and roll onto the passenger side.

EMS transported&nbsp;Niniashvili and a passenger Sabato&nbsp;Tchokhonelidze, 24, Brooklyn, New York to Citizens Medical Center.&nbsp; The driver was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Authorities have identified a woman from Colorado killed in an accident
early Wednesday on Interstate 70.

According to the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office, just
after 2 a.m. Wednesday dispatchers received the report of a rollover accident
on I-70 near milepost 166.

The 34-year-old woman — Ebony C. Williams, Denver — was eastbound on the interstate when her 2018 Ford Fusion left the roadway and traveled over an embankment between two bridges and rolling.

Williams was pronounced dead at the scene. She was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

She was wearing a seat belt, according to the sheriff’s
office news release.

State Rep. Barb&nbsp;Wasinger, R-Hays, has announced that “Karen’s Law” (HB&nbsp;2027)&nbsp;was signed into law by the Gov. Laura Kelly. &nbsp;The legislation creates a procedure to prevent the distribution of a person’s assets to someone charged with killing that person. Prior to passage of this law, a person charged with killing someone could collect from their estate until found guilty of the crime. “Karen’s Law” is another much-needed provision in the law to protect victims of abuse, Wasinger said in a news release.

The&nbsp;need for this&nbsp;legislation was brought to Wasinger's attention by Jeremiah and&nbsp;Kaycie&nbsp;Schumacher after the death of Jeremiah’s mother, <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/99967967-bd32-4c29-9eee-bfc763acb50a">Karen Schumacher</a>. Jeremiah’s father is currently in jail charged with&nbsp;the alleged&nbsp;murder&nbsp;of his wife&nbsp;when&nbsp;it was discovered that&nbsp;he had access to Karen’s assets.&nbsp;They went to court to prevent this from happening and then went to&nbsp;Wasinger&nbsp;for her help&nbsp;to fix this&nbsp;“void”&nbsp;in&nbsp;probate law.

“This&nbsp;became a&nbsp;bipartisan&nbsp;project that&nbsp;is&nbsp;near and dear to me to help the&nbsp;Schumachers," Wasinger said. HaysMed plans to have its new child care facility complete by the end of this summer.

In analyzing the need for child care in Ellis County, the hospital estimated it would use 260 slots just for its employees, said Shae Veach, HaysMed vice president of regional operations during a Hays Chamber luncheon March 31.

Ground already has been broken on the new center. It will be east of the Center of Health Improvement next to the hospital's fitness trail.

The center will have 70 slots for children infants through age 6. All of the slots will be dedicated to HaysMed staff. Those slots will be awarded through a lottery system, which will be offered in late spring.

The hospital has recruitment and retention shortfalls, Veach said. The hospital hopes to use the child care center as an employment incentive, Veach said.

Although the child care center should help with recruiting, Veach said more industry, jobs and housing also would help the hospital recruit.

Veach said hospital officials hope hospital employees' children will fill the HaysMed child care slots and that will open spots with other providers for community families.&nbsp;

At the last report, Ellis County still needs 542 new child care slots to meet demand.

Hours for the center will be 5:45 a.m. to 7:15 p.m. Programming will be curriculum-based.&nbsp;

The center will have three outside play areas and a dedicated drop-off/pickup area. In addition, the child care center will use the fitness center gymnasium for playtime during inclement weather.

HaysMed will contract with an outside provider to operate the facility.

Construction of the facility is being funded through grants from the Hays Medical Center Foundation, Dane G. Hansen Foundation, Hadley Foundation and Nex-Tech. Veach said the project is a little short of money so he is still seeking grants.

Completion of the facility is set for Aug. 15. Veach said he anticipates the child care center will open all classrooms with all 70 slots on completion of the center in August.

After a calm, pleasant Wednesday with a high of 80, the National Weather Service in Dodge City is warning of strong wind moving into the Hays area by 7 p.m.

North winds are expected to be sustained at 30 to 40 mph, gusting to 60 mph. A high wind warning will be in effect from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Thursday. Travel could be hazardous for high-profile vehicles such as semis.

There is a 30 percent chance of showers or thunderstorms in the overnight hours Thursday.

Skies are expected to begin to clear by Friday, with daytime highs Friday through Sunday in the mid- to upper-50s. Overnight lows through the weekend will drop below the freezing point, the NWS said.

There is another slight chance of precipitation Sunday night, increasing to a 30 percent to 50 percent chance of rain Monday and Tuesday.

Pleasant Wednesday — then winds will whip the area tonight

A 42-year-old Ohio man was found guilty and faces probation
for serving as a lookout during an armed robbery at the Hays Dollar General last July.

Bryan Anthony Parsley pleaded no contest Monday in Ellis County District Court and was found guilty
of conspiracy to commit robbery, a level seven person felony, for his role in
the July 21, 2022, armed robbery of the Dollar General Store at 1208 E. 27th,
Hays.

According to court documents, Parsley agreed to help
Batalova Senuoke commit armed robbery. Senuoke, armed with a handgun, threatened
the Dollar General employee and forced the employee to give him cash.

Ellis County Attorney Robert Anderson said during Monday’s
court hearing that Parsley entered the store with Senuoke and helped check to
make sure there were no children in the store.

Anderson said Parsley eventually said he did not feel comfortable
and left the store, stealing a package of toilet paper.

Senuoke carried out the theft and he, along with Parsley and
a third person fled the scene. They were eventually spotted by a highway patrol
trooper in Oakley. They fled an attempted traffic stop on Interstate 70 at a
high rate of speed before a trooper performed a tactical vehicle intervention
and both vehicles rolled. 

As a result of Parsley’s pleading to the conspiracy to commit
robbery charge, the state agreed to drop the theft charge.

Due to his criminal history, Parsley could be sentenced to between
19 and 23 months in prison for the felony conviction and can be sentenced to
probation in lieu of a prison sentence.

At the time of sentencing, Parsley will have served
approximately 10 months in the Ellis County jail and with good time credit
could have just a few months to serve in jail.

Parsley committed the crimes while on parole in Ohio and in
Kansas a special sentencing ruling allows the court to run the prison sentence
consecutively with the parole sentence from out of state.

According to court documents, the state has recommended time
served or probation to allow Parsley to be extradited back to Ohio to serve his
sentence there.

He will remain in custody pending sentencing in May.

For his role, Senuoke faces several years in prison. He pleaded
guilty earlier this month to aggravated robbery.

According to the plea agreement, Senuoke has an open case pending
in Kentucky and a parole violation in Ohio. 

He is expected to be sentenced to between 10 and 20 years in
prison in the Kentucky case and as a result Ellis County is expected allow him
to be extradited to Kentucky where he will serve out his time in both the
Kansas and Kentucky case.

Under the plea agreement in Kansas, Senuoke faces approximately
120 months, or 10 years, in prison. The sentence would run concurrent with the Kentucky
prison sentence.

KDHE: New COVID cases in Ellis Co. continue to decline

Members of the Hays Fire Department, along with the Dodge City Fire Department, recently completed their annual Federal Aviation Administration certification training for airport firefighting operations.

The training is conducted using a mobile aircraft prop provided through a partnership between the Missouri University Fire and Rescue Training Institute and the Kansas Fire and Rescue Training Institute.

"This simulator provides, as realistic as we can, fires in the cockpit, fires in the passenger compartment, fires that would be in the cargo area, on the outside of the plane, and in pans (on the ground) that simulate a fuel spill," said Ryan Hagans, Hays fire chief. "They can also have fire along the outside of the plane and the wings, brake fires and tire fires.

"It provides as real-world training as it can for these types of aircraft incidents."

The training is required each year by the FAA for all airport firefighting operations in the nation.&nbsp;

The Hays Fire Department pays&nbsp;$10,500 to KU for the training, and spends another $250 for the propane it uses.&nbsp;

"But we're able to split some of the costs with the Dodge City Fire Department," Hagans said.

The prop uses propane and has emergency shut-offs inside the simulator to carefully control the exercise.&nbsp;

The simulator is controlled from a separate unit, where a MUFRTI employee is able to monitor the temperature and propane flow, and also shut down the simulator with the touch of a button.&nbsp;

Much of the day-long training utilizes handheld fire lines, practicing attacks with the fire trucks on site at the airport fire station. "That way we get a chance to exercise those trucks and all the firefighters get a chance to drive them and operate the equipment."

Each Hays firefighter is certified in this type of firefighting, according to Hagans, although not every fire department that provides aircraft standby does that.

"We have every one of our members certified to provide this type of service. That's because we're a smaller department and we need everybody to be fully trained up in all our aspects that we do."

Airplane fires use more foam and dry chemicals to eliminate the oxygen the fire needs to sustain itself.

A plane fire often requires more personnel than a typical house fire.

"When we do our stand-bys for commercial passenger flights, we have one firefighter at the airport. If an incident would occur, we're all coming from (the downtown fire station)."

The fire department's new training facility does provide the opportunity to train with live fire, Hagans said, but on a much-reduced scale compared to the airplane mock-up.

"This does provide our guys the opportunity to get together with more than just their shift, a chance to build a little more camaraderie. It gets us as close to reality as we can."&nbsp;

The Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting program was created in 2001 and serves more than 100 airports in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Iowa with funding provided by the Missouri Department of Transportation and the FAA.

 </figure>By BECKY KISER Hays PostMembers of the Hays Fire Department, along with the Dodge City Fire Department, recently completed their annual Federal Aviation Administration certification training for airport firefighting operations.The training is conducted using a mobile aircraft prop provided through a partnership between the Missouri University Fire and Rescue Training Institute and the Kansas Fire and Rescue Training Institute."This simulator provides, as realistic as we can, fires in the cockpit, fires in the passenger compartment, fires that would be in the cargo area, on the outside of the plane, and in pans (on the ground) that simulate a fuel spill," said Ryan Hagans, Hays fire chief. "They can also have fire along the outside of the plane and the wings, brake fires and tire fires. "It provides as real-world training as it can for these types of aircraft incidents."The training is required each year by the FAA for all airport firefighting operations in the nation.&nbsp;The Hays Fire Department pays&nbsp;$10,500 to KU for the training, and spends another $250 for the propane it uses.&nbsp;"But we're able to split some of the costs with the Dodge City Fire Department," Hagans said.The prop uses propane and has emergency shut-offs inside the simulator to carefully control the exercise.&nbsp;The simulator is controlled from a separate unit, where a MUFRTI employee is able to monitor the temperature and propane flow, and also shut down the simulator with the touch of a button.&nbsp;Much of the day-long training utilizes handheld fire lines, practicing attacks with the fire trucks on site at the airport fire station. "That way we get a chance to exercise those trucks and all the firefighters get a chance to drive them and operate the equipment."Each Hays firefighter is certified in this type of firefighting, according to Hagans, although not every fire department that provides aircraft standby does that."We have every one of our members certified to provide this type of service. That's because we're a smaller department and we need everybody to be fully trained up in all our aspects that we do."Airplane fires use more foam and dry chemicals to eliminate the oxygen the fire needs to sustain itself.A plane fire often requires more personnel than a typical house fire."When we do our stand-bys for commercial passenger flights, we have one firefighter at the airport. If an incident would occur, we're all coming from (the downtown fire station)."The fire department's new training facility does provide the opportunity to train with live fire, Hagans said, but on a much-reduced scale compared to the airplane mock-up."This does provide our guys the opportunity to get together with more than just their shift, a chance to build a little more camaraderie. It gets us as close to reality as we can."&nbsp;The Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting program was created in 2001 and serves more than 100 airports in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Iowa with funding provided by the Missouri Department of Transportation and the FAA.

Knowing people in the grocery store, the space and security for children to play in parks or yards and a shared sense of ownership with your neighbors to help and make life better for each other are some of the things that make this life sweet. Smaller usually feels like an advantage in rural communities, except there are fewer people to help financially support the cost of community resources. Farmers and other landowners cover a large portion of the communities’ financial needs through property tax payments to support local municipalities, schools, hospitals and other taxing entities. Incredibly rural communities often have a choice between shockingly high taxes or a glaring lack of important community services. Bond issues are a way for the community to declare their opinion of whether some of the taxes are worth it. This spring, our school district like many other across the state, has a bond issue on the upcoming ballot. The school is asking our community to make improvements to existing facilities to accommodate unmet and future needs. Bond measures are really asking whether you and your neighbors want to join together and spend money out of your own pocket on an investment in the community. All investments should be considered carefully by weighing the cost against the risk and reward. In our ultra-polarized world, some people will quickly jump to one side or the other of this issue. Some will oppose the measure because the cost is too high or they believe the improvements are not needed. Others are strongly in favor of all investments in education and community improvements regardless of the cost. This community has been fortunate to have had citizens who balanced fiscal responsibility with a vision for a community that is a great place to live. As I look around, it is easy to see all the places where people have made investments of time and money to make our community great. I often marvel about how people have been proactive and really cared about the future of our community. It’s not like that everywhere. I appreciate the past investments and feel a sense of obligation and desire to do my best for the future of this place.&nbsp; Personally, I am typically pro-investment because community growth and improvements to our schools and other facilities make for a high quality of life that attracts new people and helps us all to thrive. However, the idea of more taxes pushes me to temper that reaction with an evaluation of the project before deciding my stance. It is my responsibility as a voter and community member to evaluate the proposed bond against my own desires and the needs of our community. The vote is a few weeks away, and I have been investigating the proposal, discussing it with my fellow voters and seeking knowledge to fill gaps in my understanding. If you have a bond issue in your community, I hope you will take the time to evaluate what is being asked and if the solution is the right course of action. Getting to the decision right can have a big impact on the future of your community. I haven’t made a decision on the bond issue yet but am confident I will walk into the polling booth as an informed voter with the best interest our community in mind. I also have faith that my fellow community members have the same feelings of responsibility and ownership of the decision they make. TREGO COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 9p.m. Tuesday in Trego County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2018 Ford F150 driven by Lori Hemingway, Colorado, was eastbound on Interstate 70 three miles west of WaKeeney.&nbsp;

The driver lost control of the pickup when strong winds blew the trailer around. The pickup entered the south ditch, rolled and coming to rest on the drivers. The trailer came unhooked and was on the drivers side to the east of the vehicle.

EMS transported a passenger Douglas William&nbsp;Loubier, 53, Colorado, to Trego County&nbsp;Lemke Memorial Hospital. Hemingway was not injured. Both were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Have you ever stepped into the water on the first fishing trip of the spring only to find your waders leaked? Or lost a nice fish because the line on your reel was old and snapped? Or even found while trying to make the&nbsp;first cast of the year that your reel wouldn’t work at all?&nbsp;All of the above are scenarios&nbsp;that can easily be avoided with a little prior planning. So&nbsp;here are a few tips to help make you ready for action&nbsp;when your buddy calls and screams&nbsp;into the phone&nbsp;“The fish are bitin’!”

Check your gear early. We all lose tackle each year to rocks and “stick fish,” so go through your tackle box, make a list and stock up. Check your waders for leaks. If they didn’t leak the last time you took them off, they probably won’t leak now, but be sure; it’s better than an unexpected boot full of cold water. Line on fishing reels should be changed every few years; the more often you use it the more often it should be changed. You can&nbsp;buy&nbsp;spools of line and DIY, or most sporting&nbsp;goods stores have&nbsp;a&nbsp;machine to do it for a small fee.&nbsp;If you fish from a boat, hopefully you’ve gone over it by now to make sure the batteries are good, the motor starts and runs well and the trailer&nbsp;tires aren’t flat.&nbsp;Also be certain to have life preservers on board for every passenger, because if stopped by wildlife and parks on the water or at the dock, they will check that.&nbsp;If you hate wearing life jackets while fishing like most of us do, look into some of the new technology that now allows life jackets to be much smaller, thinner and less obstructing. &nbsp;

We were just leaving town the other day when my wife snapped her fingers in the air and stated “Darn, I forgot to get my&nbsp;new&nbsp;fishing license.” That excuse won’t fly with a game warden if you get&nbsp;checked&nbsp;only to discover your fishing (or hunting) license has expired, so be sure yours is up-to-date. If you are 65, you can&nbsp;purchase a lifetime&nbsp;combination hunting / fishing license&nbsp;for&nbsp;only&nbsp;$42.50&nbsp;that’s good until you turn&nbsp;74 and no longer need a license; it’s the deal of the century!&nbsp;Have you ever bought your hunting license late in the season, and grumbled about it only being good for a short time until New Year’s Eve? Well grumble no more as that now has changed. Now all annual&nbsp;licenses (NOT&nbsp;special permits like deer and turkey tags and fur harvester’s permits) are valid for 365 days from the time you purchase them. So, for example, if you buy a hunting license just in time for the November pheasant opener, that license will be good until that date the&nbsp;following year. And to take convenience one step further, if you purchase licenses online, you can now sign up for a feature called “auto renew” that will send you a notice a few weeks before your new license is due each year, then automatically renew it and&nbsp;charge it to a credit or debit card. &nbsp;

Along with possessing the proper licenses and permits, comes knowledge of all Kansas fishing rules and regulations. Some regulations are statewide and apply to every cubic inch of Kansas water, whether lake, river, stream or reservoir. Some lakes and reservoirs however have length limits, etc that are unique to that water. That’s why every Kansas fisherman’s tackle box should contain a copy of the 2023&nbsp;Kansas Fishing regulations Summary, a&nbsp;multi-page pamphlet that lists&nbsp;all that information for all Kansas lakes, reservoirs, state fishing lakes and community fishing lakes, so you should never get “caught”&nbsp;with your hook bare, so to speak. These should be available everywhere tackle and licenses are sold.

If you’re like me,&nbsp;and not a died-in-the-wool fisherman, it’s handy to know what lakes and reservoirs are best for what fish species. Another handy booklet no Kansas fisherman should be without is the 2023Fishing Forecast. This forecast&nbsp;is assembled by Kansas fisheries biologists using data gathered when they sample&nbsp;lakes in each of their jurisdictions. For each fish species, it rates lakes, reservoirs, state fishing lakes and community fishing lakes for largest fish and largest fish populations. These forecasts are available at all Kansas Dept of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism offices and to download online from the website at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.ksoutdoors.com/">www.ksoutdoors.com</a>.&nbsp;So instead of helping put the “pro” in procrastinate, take care of business by getting your&nbsp;fishing stuff in order, making certain your license is up-to-date, arm yourselves with all the available information readily available about Kansas fishing regulations and opportunities, and take someone along who’s new to fishing as you continue to Explore Kansas Outdoors!

Exploring Outdoors Kansas: Be prepared when the fish are biting

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — In the last 17 years, the University of Kansas men's basketball program has entered the NCAA Tournament with an average seed of 1.6.&nbsp;

Bill Self's teams have won two national championships (2008, 2022) and played for another (2012) in that span.

The nine-time conference coach of the year said winning is different when fans expect titles every year.

"Winning is a relief," Self said. "Winning becomes a relief and losing is a disaster."

<a href="https://www.hutchcc.edu/dillon-lecture-series">Self spoke in the Hutchinson Sports Arena Tuesday for the Dillon Lecture Series (DLS) about what it takes to be successful</a>. He also addressed how to achieve more after a goal is reached.

Self asked for the Wichita State fans to make some noise. A few did.&nbsp;

He asked for the K-State fans to make some noise. The crowd got a little louder.&nbsp;

As the applause faded, Self told those fans they could kindly leave.&nbsp;

All joking aside, Self praised the success of not just Kansas teams, but all collegiate teams because "Iron sharpens iron."

"It raises the bar for everybody," Self said.&nbsp;"We should be great because someone else is good."

Self is the sixth member of the Naismith Hall of Fame to speak for the DLS, now in its 42nd season.

He outlined what it took to be successful with so much pressure. 

"Show up," Self said. "Be fully present. Be a caretaker and contributor."

Self noted he is the chief caretaker of the most prestigious and storied program in the nation, but urged attendees to apply that same drive to their every-day job and life.
