The breakdown of degrees and certificates granted includes:

Heartland Community Foundation welcomes 5 new board members

There’s a mayoral election taking place in Wichita, Kansas’s largest stand-alone city, right now. Also, strikes have been declared at Spirit AeroSystems, Wichita’s largest single employer, and Ascension Via Christi, the city’s largest hospital. What does all this have in common?

Potentially many things. The business slowdowns, budget deficits, and unemployment which any labor unrest may contribute to, are obviously all topics that people seeking political office are going to have to struggle with. And similarly, the positions taken by a city’s mayor can play a large role in determining how and when strikes or contract negotiations may be resolved. So, these topics are going to be entwined in Wichita, as they would in any community.

But there is another similarity between them, one that isn’t often noticed, but which I think lurks behind the scenes in how we approach either an election or a strike. When voters organize in support of someone running for political office, or when workers organize and make collective demands of their employer, we are seeing “factions” at work.

The concept of a faction—people who act together in support of their shared interests—has a storied place in our constitutional order. For much of history, factions were seen as poisonous; the assumption was that if people organized around particular agendas, there could be no united, “common” good. This meant societies had to stay small and simple and homogeneous, so as to prevent the factional temptation. But James Madison defended the proposed U.S. Constitution in part by insisting that factions were a natural result of human freedom. The goal shouldn’t be to prevent them, but to expand and include them, and seek to manage their effects instead.

Madisonian pluralism can be criticized, but it remains the way the American system usually looks upon factional differences. When employees have differences with how they are treated by their employers, they can organize into unions and make demands, including through strikes. True, many are suspicious of unions, and the Republican party, both nationally and in Kansas, has often opposed them. But even with the challenges the striking machinists and nurses might pose to Wichita’s economy, none of the candidates for mayor, including the Republican ones, spoke against the strikers as a faction (though some were more supportive than others).

It is odd that our recognition of factional differences on the factory or hospital floor often disappears, though. When it comes to City Hall. As I wrote above, there are Republicans running for Wichita’s mayor, as well as a Democrat and a Libertarian and unaffiliated candidates, which shouldn’t surprise anyone. Yet when it comes to local elections—in contrast to national and state ones—many share the belief that “partisanship” (which can just mean thinking and acting factionally, in support of the interests of one’s supporters) is poisonous, like was assumed by many long ago.

Parties can be corrupt, of course—in the same way unions, or for that matter businesses, can be. Institutional collusion and self-interest within any kind of faction or organization warrants being called out for such. But as the Wichita mayoral race moves forward, it will be interesting to see which candidates, if any, will be forthright--like the striking machinists and nurses have been--in defense of the factions they represent and the particular agenda they offer to voters, and which will instead insist that specific shared interests must be set aside in the name of a “unified” good.

Madison had some doubts about that approach, centuries ago; there are good reasons for us to doubt it still today.

Celebrate July 4th history at Fort Larned

 She saw the needs and wanted to better serve her community. But without financial assistance, Meriah Escarcega said she would not have been able to go back to school or further her career as an outpatient therapist. 

Thanks to a grant from the Dane G. Hansen Foundation, Logan, Kan., Meriah and three other High Plains Mental Health Center staff members were able to pursue advanced coursework at Fort Hays State University. The opportunity comes at a critical time when more people are seeking behavioral health treatment, but a national workforce shortage makes it difficult for rural agencies to hire and retain qualified mental health professionals. 

Meriah completed a Master’s of Social Work training program at FHSU in May, and is expected to begin work as a bilingual outpatient therapist at High Plains Mental Health Center later this summer.

“I think this program is an amazing opportunity and is likely to play a major role as to why HPMHC employees are going to decide to further their education due to the financial stress it may bring on,” Escarcega said. “I am so thankful to have received this option and I hope it continues to be offered to other employees to benefit HPMHC and our clients.”

The Dane G. Hansen Foundation, Logan, granted a two-year scholarship fund to HPMHC for the specific purpose of growing the region’s behavioral health workforce through advanced education at FHSU. This grant program expired in May 2023.

 A total of four staff members received assistance from the scholarship program, and all will join HPMHC workforce as clinical therapists. 

Two of the new therapists (Escarcega and Carmen Morales-Hernandez) are bilingual, making Spanish-speaking therapy services available at HPMHC for the first time. Morales-Hernandez graduated with her MSW in May 2022 and is currently accepting new clients. 

Both are passionate about reducing stigma and improving access to Spanish-speaking and culturally competent mental health services for the region’s growing Hispanic/Latino communities. Bilingual therapy services are now available on-site in Hays, or via telehealth to any residents within the 20 counties served by High Plains Mental Health Center. A sliding fee scale is available, and clients are not refused services based on inability to pay.

“I like making a difference in people’s lives and building that sense of hope for change,” Morales-Hernandez said. “It’s a rewarding feeling when you know that the work you do with clients is making a difference in their lives.”

Recruiting professionals from other areas has always been difficult for rural agencies, and High Plains long has recognized the importance of a “grow your own” approach to workforce, said Walt Hill, executive director. Many staff members begin their careers with entry-level service positions requiring a high school diploma or bachelor’s degree, then decide they want to advance their careers in mental health services. 

Investing in established local professionals is a win-win, because those with ties to the&nbsp;area are usually more likely to stay in northwest Kansas long term, Hill said. The Hansen grant program was available only to students pursuing advanced coursework at FHSU, also benefitting the region’s only four-year university.

“We are so thankful for the Hansen Foundation’s support in helping us expand workforce to address the increasing need for mental health services,” Hill said. “We work very hard to support our staff in advancing their career goals, and are pleased we were able to invest in four bright young professionals who are committed to working and living in northwest Kansas.”

A third Hansen scholar, Mandy Stock, is expected to begin work as an outpatient therapist at the Phillipsburg Branch Office later this summer. 

Stock, Escarcega and Morales-Hernandez all had extensive experience working as Recovery Specialists (case managers) and serving clients in northwest Kansas. A fourth staff member has begun the clinical psychology program at FHSU and is expected to graduate in 2024. The additional workforce comes at a critical time, as mental health service needs have been increasing locally and nationally.

High Plains Mental Health Center in 2022 served a record high of 7,149 individual clients. Evidence suggests that 1 in 5 U.S. adults and 1 in 6 youth will experience a mental illness in any given year. Additionally, the World Health Organization reported the Covid-19 pandemic significantly increased the prevalence of anxiety, depression and substance use worldwide. 

It’s also likely that people are feeling more comfortable reaching out for mental health services, as stigma begins to lessen and more people are willing to think about and talk about their mental health, Hill said.

“Mental health care is healthcare, and it’s important to reach out if you’re struggling. There is help available wherever you are, and there is hope,” Hill said. “We are proud to serve Northwest Kansas and appreciate the support of our mission to expand access to quality healthcare.”

High Plains Mental Health Center is a licensed Community Mental Health Center and Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic dedicated to the aggressive pursuit of providing a comprehensive mental health program to the residents of Northwest Kansas. Embodied in this pursuit are fundamental principles of establishing quality services as close to home as possible, at an affordable fee, and delivered in the least disruptive manner available. But without financial assistance, Meriah Escarcega said she would not have been able to go back to school or further her career as an outpatient therapist. Thanks to a grant from the Dane G. Hansen Foundation, Logan, Kan., Meriah and three other High Plains Mental Health Center staff members were able to pursue advanced coursework at Fort Hays State University. The opportunity comes at a critical time when more people are seeking behavioral health treatment, but a national workforce shortage makes it difficult for rural agencies to hire and retain qualified mental health professionals. Meriah completed a Master’s of Social Work training program at FHSU in May, and is expected to begin work as a bilingual outpatient therapist at High Plains Mental Health Center later this summer.“I think this program is an amazing opportunity and is likely to play a major role as to why HPMHC employees are going to decide to further their education due to the financial stress it may bring on,” Escarcega said. “I am so thankful to have received this option and I hope it continues to be offered to other employees to benefit HPMHC and our clients.”The Dane G. Hansen Foundation, Logan, granted a two-year scholarship fund to HPMHC for the specific purpose of growing the region’s behavioral health workforce through advanced education at FHSU. This grant program expired in May 2023. A total of four staff members received assistance from the scholarship program, and all will join HPMHC workforce as clinical therapists. Two of the new therapists (Escarcega and Carmen Morales-Hernandez) are bilingual, making Spanish-speaking therapy services available at HPMHC for the first time. Morales-Hernandez graduated with her MSW in May 2022 and is currently accepting new clients. Both are passionate about reducing stigma and improving access to Spanish-speaking and culturally competent mental health services for the region’s growing Hispanic/Latino communities. Bilingual therapy services are now available on-site in Hays, or via telehealth to any residents within the 20 counties served by High Plains Mental Health Center. A sliding fee scale is available, and clients are not refused services based on inability to pay.“I like making a difference in people’s lives and building that sense of hope for change,” Morales-Hernandez said. “It’s a rewarding feeling when you know that the work you do with clients is making a difference in their lives.”Recruiting professionals from other areas has always been difficult for rural agencies, and High Plains long has recognized the importance of a “grow your own” approach to workforce, said Walt Hill, executive director. Many staff members begin their careers with entry-level service positions requiring a high school diploma or bachelor’s degree, then decide they want to advance their careers in mental health services. Investing in established local professionals is a win-win, because those with ties to the&nbsp;area are usually more likely to stay in northwest Kansas long term, Hill said. The Hansen grant program was available only to students pursuing advanced coursework at FHSU, also benefitting the region’s only four-year university.“We are so thankful for the Hansen Foundation’s support in helping us expand workforce to address the increasing need for mental health services,” Hill said. “We work very hard to support our staff in advancing their career goals, and are pleased we were able to invest in four bright young professionals who are committed to working and living in northwest Kansas.”A third Hansen scholar, Mandy Stock, is expected to begin work as an outpatient therapist at the Phillipsburg Branch Office later this summer. Stock, Escarcega and Morales-Hernandez all had extensive experience working as Recovery Specialists (case managers) and serving clients in northwest Kansas. A fourth staff member has begun the clinical psychology program at FHSU and is expected to graduate in 2024. The additional workforce comes at a critical time, as mental health service needs have been increasing locally and nationally.High Plains Mental Health Center in 2022 served a record high of 7,149 individual clients. Evidence suggests that 1 in 5 U.S. adults and 1 in 6 youth will experience a mental illness in any given year. Additionally, the World Health Organization reported the Covid-19 pandemic significantly increased the prevalence of anxiety, depression and substance use worldwide. It’s also likely that people are feeling more comfortable reaching out for mental health services, as stigma begins to lessen and more people are willing to think about and talk about their mental health, Hill said.“Mental health care is healthcare, and it’s important to reach out if you’re struggling. Hansen Foundation, High Plains Mental Health Center partner for scholarship program

Do you have a hard time getting enough sleep in the summertime? You might blame an irregular schedule or longer days, but there are a few factors that science proves to lead to fewer zzz’s in the summertime.

1. Reduced melatonin production. Longer days lead to greater sunlight exposure in the evenings. While this is great to help you fit in a walk, spend time in the garden, or catch a baseball game, evening light exposure delays the hormone production of melatonin. This results in difficulty falling asleep, and over time, it can decrease the amount of sleep you get each night.

2. Increased core body temperature. The heat that accompanies the summer months often leads to an increased body temperature that suppresses your ability to fall asleep and stay asleep. According to one study, restorative deep sleep is less in those who have a higher body temperature (1). This means that the vital processes of tissue repair, memory restoration, and immune system function may be reduced for those who can’t cool down at night.

3. Age plays a role. Throughout the life cycle, sleep quality and quantity drastically decrease. This factor alone can result in fatigue, and the increased daylight hours of the summertime can add even more stress to the body. This change in daylight hours can throw off the body’s circadian rhythm resulting in earlier wake times of people ages 60+.

As you can see, there are multiple culprits that affect the sleep cycle.

 So how do you combat the restlessness of summer? Practice consistency by closing curtains and dimming indoor lights. Adding this to your bedtime routine can boost melatonin production earlier in the evening. Avoid exercise two hours before bed. High levels of activity are likely to increase core body temperatures that inhibit sleep. Instead, try to workout earlier in the day and fight the heat in the evening with a cold shower. To top it off, create a comfortable environment by adjusting your thermostat to a temperature between 60-68 degrees for optimal sleeping conditions. Finally, soak up the sun early in the day! The body is highly sensitive to sunlight about an hour after waking up, and this exposure in the morning is key in regulating your circadian rhythm (2).

WINKEL: Summertime sleeplessness

Neighbors helping neighbors is a Kansas way of life - and it applies not only to combining a wheat field down the road for folks down on their luck, but also to those in need around the world. 

It was a Kansas farmer who first proposed the idea of sharing grain with countries in dire need nearly 70 years ago. Today, another Kansan - First District U.S. Representative Tracey Mann of Salina - is helping carry that torch by leading legislative efforts to keep the food in now well-established U.S. food aid programs.&nbsp;

“Kansas wheat producers are proud to continue a tradition of championing food aid programs that provide high-quality wheat to those in need,” said Kansas Wheat CEO Justin Gilpin. “These programs have saved lives and built goodwill all in one simple gesture, and we are proud to support the push to keep the food in food aid.”&nbsp;

Peter O’Brien, a young farmer and rancher from Cheyenne County, first suggested donating grain to countries in need during a county meeting in September 1953. Those comments sparked a grassroots movement, leading to the Agricultural Trade Development and Assistance Act in 1954, sponsored by U.S. Senator Any Schoeppel, Claflin, and signed into law by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Abilene - both Kansans.&nbsp;

The pillar of today’s modern food aid programs was a common goal: provide people in developing countries with a secure food source, and they will do more than survive. As their economies recover and thrive, they become new potential buyers of U.S. exports.&nbsp;

For decades, the implementation of food aid programs stayed true to this purpose, purchasing and donating U.S.-grown commodities, like wheat, to countries in need. Wheat has been a staple in the fight against global hunger, accounting for roughly 20 percent of the calories consumed globally. In recent years, however, the programs have shifted to transferring cash and purchasing commodities from foreign competitors with U.S. dollars.&nbsp;

“This shift has diminished transparency and accountability, reduced the procurement and shipment of American-grown food for hungry people, and jeopardized more than six decades of bipartisan support for our international food aid programs,” Mann said.&nbsp;

To correct the course of U.S. food aid programs, Mann, who represents the Big First Congressional District, jointly introduced the “American Farmers Feed the World Act of 2023” with U.S. Representatives John Garamendi (CA-08), Rick Crawford (AR-01), and Jimmy Panetta (CA-19) on June 22.&nbsp;

The legislation seeks to ensure U.S.-grown commodities remain the cornerstone of international food aid by ending the Food for Peace program’s utilization of cash transfers overseas - along with restoring transparency, accountability and efficiency to the program.&nbsp;

“The American Farmers Feed the World Act of 2023 supports more Kansas wheat going to more people around the world who are in need,” said Brian Linin, U.S. Wheat Associates Board of Directors member, Food Aid Working Group member, and farmer in Goodland. “This legislation is an opportunity to make sure taxpayer dollars are spent in a manner that truly makes an impact on global hunger. Commodities produced by U.S. farmers should always be the first choice when it comes to international food aid programs.”&nbsp;

From casual conversations in St. Francis to press conferences outside the U.S. Congress, the principle of neighbors helping neighbors, particularly by providing secure access to food, remains an ideal Kansans will continue to champion.&nbsp;

“This bill puts a stake in the ground,” Mann said. “It’s a noble thing to feed hungry people, and we should use American commodities as we do it.”

Forward Ever: Kan. Rep. 110 Ken Rahjes discusses white powder mailed to legislators

RUSSELL COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 5 p.m. Thursday in Russell County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2011 Buick Enclave driven by&nbsp; Lilly B.&nbsp;Epke, 14, Bazine, exited westbound Interstate 70 at 181st Street and came to a stop at the stop sign.&nbsp;

The driver failed to yield to northbound traffic and pulled out in front of a 2019 Subaru Ascent driven by Jessica D. Somers, 37, Russell.

A passenger in the Buick identified as 66-year-old Doris A. Epke of&nbsp;Schoenchen was transported to Hays Medical Center. The drivers were not injured. All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.&nbsp; &nbsp;There were five juvenile passengers present in the Subaru and one in the Buick. The KHP reported no additional details.

RUSSELL COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 5 p.m. Thursday in Russell County.The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2011 Buick Enclave driven by&nbsp; Lilly B.&nbsp;Epke, 14, Bazine, exited westbound Interstate 70 at 181st Street and came to a stop at the stop sign.&nbsp;The driver failed to yield to northbound traffic and pulled out in front of a 2019 Subaru Ascent driven by Jessica D. Somers, 37, Russell.A passenger in the Buick identified as 66-year-old Doris A. Epke of&nbsp;Schoenchen was transported to Hays Medical Center. The drivers were not injured. All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.&nbsp; &nbsp;There were five juvenile passengers present in the Subaru and one in the Buick. The KHP reported no additional details.

The National Weather Service is forecasting a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 5 p.m. in Hays with chances of showers and thunderstorms increasing overnight to 80 percent before 8 a.m.&nbsp;

The forecast is for clearing skies on Saturday and Sunday with a high of 80 Saturday and 91 Sunday.

Various city streets in northwest Hays will receive a seal coat Friday, June 30.

Seal coat is spray applied in two coats with a dry time of two to three hours per pass, so the streets being sealed will be temporarily closed during this time. 

On the date scheduled for treatment, all cars need to be moved from the street by 8:00 a.m. Streets being sealed will be closed from approximately 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Access can be achieved in cases of emergency. Parking on adjacent streets is recommended during the daytime. Parking in driveways is okay if you DO NOT plan on moving the vehicle between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. 

The seal coat treatment should not be driven on until it has set up (dried). It will stain surfaces such as concrete, carpet, or flooring if tracked from construction areas. 

Please have all lawn watering devices turned off the evening before the scheduled date. 

Please help keep the streets clean and dry for a smooth and lasting project. 

Traffic control will be set in areas of work being completed and picked up by the end of the work day.

Seal coat project closes streets Friday in northwest Hays

It's been more than a year since&nbsp;the carrier at Hays Regional Airport, SkyWest Airlines, <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/349480c6-6e76-4e69-b11c-60bd8a239018">filed notice with the U.S. Department of Transportation it would terminate service</a> in 90 days in 29 cities across the country, including Hays, Salina, Dodge City and Liberal.

The decision was made due to an ongoing shortage of pilots, exacerbated by the pandemic with its near shutdown of air travel, and a growing number of captains reaching the mandatory retirement age of 65.

DOT immediately issued a hold-in order for SkyWest to stay in Hays.

The airport has <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/0eeb6e0a-febc-4e2c-bc3b-bf05d0eca649">continued to operate with SkyWest</a> since then.

Multiple small communities served by SkyWest, which has the&nbsp; Essential Air Service federal contracts in those rural areas, are encouraging DOT to approve an option offered by SkyWest.

The Utah-based company asked DOT for permission to operate new flights under less-restrictive charter-airline rules if it limits jet planes to 30 seats.

However, DOT has taken no action on the application for commuter authority since it was filed in September 2022. 

But it has done so with other carriers, according to&nbsp;Wade Steel, chief commercial officer of SkyWest, Inc.&nbsp;

"Very frustrating," is how Jamie Salter, airport director, describes the situation.

Salter said the city of Haysand other communities served by SkyWest support approval of the application and believe it would help to alleviate the pilot shortage SkyWest Airlines is facing.

"SkyWest Charter would be able to utilize Part 135 pilots who do not face the mandatory retirement at age 65 as do Part 121 pilots. (SkyWest Airlines operates in the form of a 121 certificate.) Part 135 pilots must pass FAA physical exams twice yearly to ensure fitness," Salter said.

From a safety perspective, Part 135 pilots are those who retired from flying Boeing 787 Dreamliners internationally (for example) with 20,000 to 30,000 hours of flight time, she said.

Salter, Steel, and airport representatives from&nbsp;Salina, Dodge City, Liberal, Fort Dodge, Iowa, and Mason City, Iowa, recently held a virtual press conference in support of the SkyWest Charter commuter authority authorization.&nbsp;

"SWC goes above and beyond the safety standards required for commuter authority by only utilizing pilots who hold FAA Airline Transport Pilot licenses in both seats of the flight deck – a commitment no other operator with DOT commuter authority has made," Steel said.

"The fact that SkyWest Charter’s application for commuter authority was submitted nearly a year ago and has yet to receive a response is particularly frustrating as there are other commuter carriers operating the same type of service with similar aircraft as proposed by SWC in various parts of the country, but at a lesser safety standard than SWC will apply," Salter said.

Although Steel said SkyWest Charter would surpass other charter operators in pilot training, rest rules and other safety practices, airline unions are fighting the request.

The Air Line Pilots Association is one of those opposed.

Corey Keller, director of public works for Dodge City, said the group is trying to "mislead the application process to show more bargaining power for its pilots. If there's less pilots in the system, it means more bargaining power."

Salter has been very happy with the performance of SkyWest at the Hays airport.

"They've done what they said. They're very reputable," she said Thursday.

She also noted there have been no disruptions in the flight service. An evening flight to Denver will change Saturday to arrive early in the afternoon at 12:11 p.m.

Hays' Essential Air Service contract with the U.S. Department of Transportation and SkyWest ends next year on July 31, 2024.

KDOT announces approved June bids in northwest Kansas

In Ellis County, the discharge of fireworks in the unincorporated areas of the county will be allowed from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. July 2 to 4.

Hays, Ellis, Victoria, Ellis County set fireworks discharge rules

Hearing the words “what a kind, compassionate child you’ve raised” is often one of the greatest compliments a parent can receive as they turn their young person out into the world.

The foundation for this empathy, says Kansas State University child development specialist Bradford Wiles, happens early in life.

“Children start to figure out that other people have different beliefs, thoughts and desires other than their own at about the age of three,” Wiles said. “This is a crucial time to teach them to appreciate and enjoy other people’s perspectives.”

Before that, he said children can recognize differences in the way people dress or skin color, but they don’t have any opinions — positive or negative — about that.

“As children grow up, they are exposed to our family, regional and local community cultures, and if your family culture is one of acceptance and embracing others, children will pick up on that,” Wiles said.

Embracing others ties to the skill of empathy, Wiles said.

“Empathy is being able to appreciate and understand someone else’s perspective; it’s putting yourself in their place, which is different than sympathy where you feel bad for others,” Wiles said. “Empathy is also different than tolerating something unpalatable.”

He cited the example of how when sitting in a waiting room a person might tolerate overhearing a cell phone conversation, but those who can empathize have an appreciation for what is being discussed in that conversation even if it is something that they personally don’t have an experience with.

And children who learn empathy at a young age often grow into adults who can navigate social situations and perform well as members of a team, Wiles said.

“Research has shown that people who express empathy are able to better work with other people to solve problems in the workforce,” he said.

“It starts with family modeling; if you have friends from diverse backgrounds, make sure your children interact with them and it isn’t just people of different cultures,” Wiles said. “In the U.S. there tends to be a lack of empathy for people who are low income. For some, the perception is that poor people don’t work hard, and while that may be true for a small subset, the vast majority are working hard to maintain a level of poverty.”

To help children cross those cultures Wiles encourages parents to demonstrate empathy by volunteering in the community or in school where children can see them engaging with others and modeling that all people have worth, even if they are different.

“Through volunteer work, parents can demonstrate to children that all people have value, and they are richer for those interactions,” Wiles said.

Another way to model empathy is to expose children to a wide range of books and have family discussions about the story, Wiles said. He explains that through books, children can be exposed to characters who are developmentally delayed or physically challenged, come from another culture or are from a different social class, among other differences.

 </figure>By MONIQUE KOERNER KSRE Cottonwood DistrictHearing the words “what a kind, compassionate child you’ve raised” is often one of the greatest compliments a parent can receive as they turn their young person out into the world.The foundation for this empathy, says Kansas State University child development specialist Bradford Wiles, happens early in life.“Children start to figure out that other people have different beliefs, thoughts and desires other than their own at about the age of three,” Wiles said. “This is a crucial time to teach them to appreciate and enjoy other people’s perspectives.”Before that, he said children can recognize differences in the way people dress or skin color, but they don’t have any opinions — positive or negative — about that.“As children grow up, they are exposed to our family, regional and local community cultures, and if your family culture is one of acceptance and embracing others, children will pick up on that,” Wiles said.Embracing others ties to the skill of empathy, Wiles said.“Empathy is being able to appreciate and understand someone else’s perspective; it’s putting yourself in their place, which is different than sympathy where you feel bad for others,” Wiles said. “Empathy is also different than tolerating something unpalatable.”He cited the example of how when sitting in a waiting room a person might tolerate overhearing a cell phone conversation, but those who can empathize have an appreciation for what is being discussed in that conversation even if it is something that they personally don’t have an experience with.And children who learn empathy at a young age often grow into adults who can navigate social situations and perform well as members of a team, Wiles said.“Research has shown that people who express empathy are able to better work with other people to solve problems in the workforce,” he said.So how is empathy developed?“It starts with family modeling; if you have friends from diverse backgrounds, make sure your children interact with them and it isn’t just people of different cultures,” Wiles said. “In the U.S. there tends to be a lack of empathy for people who are low income. For some, the perception is that poor people don’t work hard, and while that may be true for a small subset, the vast majority are working hard to maintain a level of poverty.”To help children cross those cultures Wiles encourages parents to demonstrate empathy by volunteering in the community or in school where children can see them engaging with others and modeling that all people have worth, even if they are different.“Through volunteer work, parents can demonstrate to children that all people have value, and they are richer for those interactions,” Wiles said.Another way to model empathy is to expose children to a wide range of books and have family discussions about the story, Wiles said. He explains that through books, children can be exposed to characters who are developmentally delayed or physically challenged, come from another culture or are from a different social class, among other differences.“One of the best things about books is that the characters provide early opportunities for a parent to facilitate a discussion with the child by asking ‘What do you think that character is thinking about?’ and that forces the child to engage in the process of empathy,” Wiles said.More information on child development is available online from K-State Research and Extension.Monique Koerner is the Family and Community Wellness Agent with K-State Research and Extension – Cottonwood District.
