A team of five Fort Hays State University organizational leadership students were awarded the Team Communication Award out of 15 teams in the college division at the recent Leadership Challenge Event at Washburn University.

Team members included Diana Angarita, San Felipe, Venezuela; Kourtney Davidson, Park; Slater Heglin, Ulysses; Laike Imm, Phillipsburg; and Tarah Stockebrand, Chanute.

During the annual Washburn Leadership Challenge Event, students received a half day of leadership development and participated in a full-day leadership simulation. Each student took on a role within the fictitious community of Metropolis and responded as a team to a leadership challenge.

At the event, which was hosted by Washburn’s Leadership Institute, students engaged with their team through an intense simulation throughout the day. Dr. Lori Kniffin, assistant professor of Leadership, said students typically comment on how real the experience feels.

“It’s a unique experience for our leadership students to put into practice what they have learned in our courses,” she said. “I was really proud of how they engaged in learning on the first day and put so much knowledge and passion into their proposal and presentation.”

“There were some lightbulb moments when the students saw some leadership concepts from class come to life.”

This year the team put together a community grant proposal to support their recommendations for responding to a grocery store that burnt down in a low-income neighborhood. Throughout the day, the students were judged on their communication, collaboration, and role-play in meetings.

Two area FHSU students on winning team at Leadership Challenge event

I love getting to highlight all of the different projects that 4-H offers! While livestock is usually the first thing that people think of, I have highlighted eighteen projects over the last few weeks and, while several have been related to agriculture, none have been our livestock projects.

This week I am starting off with the Rabbit project! Rabbits are a great small animal project and help teach animal science and responsibility as well as a multitude of specific features of different breeds, and grooming and showmanship. I had no idea there were so many types of rabbits! Additionally, youth can experience learning to judge rabbits.

Another small species project is poultry. While we generally think of chickens, the poultry project can include turkeys, geese, and ducks. Youth also have the opportunity to learn about other types of poultry, about eggs and candling, and can experience learning to poultry judge.

Nearly everyone has had a pet at some point and learning responsibility for feeding and care is a big deal! The Pet project lets 4-H youth explore different types of pets and how to care for a variety from fish to cats. Youth learn about potential hazards for pets in the home, about nutritional needs, and about diseases and symptoms. This is a great project for kids who want to explore the first steps of veterinary science.

Like any animal, the more that rabbits, poultry, and most pets are handled, the easier it is for youth to showcase their animal and what they have learned while gaining confidence and practicing communication skills in talking to a judge.

BERAN: Rabbits, poultry and pet projects for 4-H

Karlyn Rohr and Arin Schibi were all smiles as they presented a check for $10,206.84 to DSNWK from the <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/63efb9e0-497a-4356-bbbc-97fcb89a1ec3">Dancing Together for DSNWK fundraiser</a> held on February 26th hosted by Styles Dance Centre.

Rohr and Schibi are both dancers at Styles Dance Centre and seniors at Thomas More Prep-Marian High School. They stepped up to lead the event for their senior capstone project, which is a service project for students at TMP.

Forty-four individuals served by DSWK participated in the recital held at Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center.

Dancing Together for DSNWK was brought back through the efforts of Rohr, Schibi and Styles Dance Centre after a long break due to COVID-19. It featured dances by both the dancers at Styles as well as special group dances featuring individuals served by DSNWK.

“We are so appreciative of Styles Dance Centre and of both Karlyn and Arin,” said Steve Keil, DSNWK director of development. “I know that a lot of work has gone into this and it does not go unnoticed. They were able to create one of the biggest highlights of the year for us."

Three-day weather outlook

&nbsp;I am constantly reminded of the compassion and spirit of generosity of our Fort Hays State University students. I love hearing the stories of how they are impacting the lives of others every day. Emily Schulte, Hays, is one of those stories. As she sets her sights on a path to medical school after her FHSU graduation, Emily put herself on the patient side of the bone marrow donation process in January.

Emily is soft-spoken and known for her humble nature. As a biology major and student employee of FHSU’s Health and Wellness Services, Emily made the decision as a freshman to become a bone marrow donor when she worked at a Be the Match bone marrow drive on the FHSU campus.

During the drive, a DNA sample was swabbed from Emily’s cheek, sent to Be the Match, and then added to a national registry list. After waiting three years, Emily was notified last fall that she was a potential match for someone in need of a transplant.

“A large part of what motivated me was to be able to say that I gave someone the gift of life,” Emily said. “Also, to understand the donor process and know what donors go through.”

“For me, I didn’t have any doubts about doing it. I got called (from Be the Match) and knew that whatever I had to do, I was going to do it.”

Be the Match flew Emily and her mother to Chicago in January, where her bone marrow donation, which she described as similar to a lengthy blood donation, took about 4 ½ hours. Prior to the donation, filgrastim injections were performed to stimulate stem cell production, enabling Emily’s donation to have an above-average stem cell quantity.

As a student preparing for a medical career, Emily did some of the preparation work for the donation on her own. Her coworkers at FHSU’s Health and Wellness Services assisted her in the process.

“I definitely also had a really good support system, from both my coworkers and Be the Match during the preparation process,” Emily said.

Be the Match funded the flight, transportation, meals, and lodging for her and her mother during the trip. From their flight to Chicago to their flight back to Hays, the trip took the pair three days. The whirlwind travel and donation process were physically exhausting for Emily.

“Honestly, I felt like I got hit by a bus. But within two to three days after the donation, I felt pretty much back to normal,” she said. “They (the medical staff) want you to hydrate and rest and take care of yourself. I didn’t have any bad side effects after or before.”

Emily received a text saying her donation had been sent to the patient’s hospital within a day of her donation. She will be allowed to contact the recipient anonymously if she chooses. After a year, though, she and the recipient can exchange contact information. She hopes to meet the recipient with whom she shares this special connection.

Emily inspires those around her to consider donating bone marrow or contributing to an organization that provides that service.

“I would tell them that despite any doubts you might have, go through with it,” she said. “It is a really unique opportunity. The best gift you can give someone is a second chance at life.”

This is exactly why Fort Hays State is such a special place. Our students who are willing to step out of their comfort zones to ensure a future for others give me tremendous hope for the future. Thank you to Emily and all those who choose to make second chances possible.

Heart of a Tiger: Giving the gift of life

​A bonus of living on the prairie&nbsp;involves&nbsp;seeing&nbsp;stunning sunrises and sunsets&nbsp;regularly. Anyone&nbsp;awakening&nbsp;as the eastern sky lightens&nbsp;enjoys&nbsp;colorful&nbsp;shows&nbsp;folks&nbsp;elsewhere&nbsp;would&nbsp;love&nbsp;to see.&nbsp;A similar event&nbsp;happens several evenings a week. Those&nbsp;viewing the&nbsp;western horizon can watch sky colors morph from hues of blue to&nbsp;shades of&nbsp;orange, red, crimson, violet, lavender, and deep purple.&nbsp;Few enjoy frequent displays of&nbsp;breathtaking beauty, but&nbsp;one&nbsp;sight Kansans&nbsp;seldom&nbsp;see is the&nbsp;Northern Lights&nbsp;akaAurora&nbsp;Borealis.&nbsp;One&nbsp;such&nbsp;opportunity&nbsp;occurred last week. Based&nbsp;on Kansas&nbsp;photography site&nbsp;postings, that solar storm&nbsp;created a&nbsp;lifetime memory&nbsp;for&nbsp;a&nbsp;few fortunate observers.

​I kick myself I didn’t&nbsp;prop my eyelids open&nbsp;to watch&nbsp;night&nbsp;skies&nbsp;after receiving&nbsp;the&nbsp;Aurora Alert by Soft Serve News&nbsp;on my cell phone. However,&nbsp;after&nbsp;getting&nbsp;dozens of these the past eight years&nbsp;and staying&nbsp;awake&nbsp;through previous warnings&nbsp;without a payoff, I&nbsp;headed&nbsp;to bed.&nbsp;This&nbsp;alert&nbsp;looked good forNorthern Wyoming, but&nbsp;the diagram didn’t suggest&nbsp;a show in Northwest Kansas.&nbsp;Once&nbsp;I saw&nbsp;a&nbsp;vivid aurora photo from Perryton, Texas,&nbsp;the next morning&nbsp;I realized&nbsp;this&nbsp;magnetic surge&nbsp;ended up bigger than predicted.&nbsp;

​I won’t pretend to understand the science behind these light shows, but it&nbsp;involves&nbsp;solar activity and&nbsp;Earth’s magnetic field.&nbsp;Professionals who monitor&nbsp;such phenomena&nbsp;can&nbsp;identify&nbsp;solar&nbsp;storms&nbsp;that trigger these amazing light shows&nbsp;before the performance begins&nbsp;and alert hopeful viewers.

​Recently,&nbsp;NPR&nbsp;published&nbsp;an article titled “What Causes the Northern Lights? Scientists Finally Know for Sure” written by Joe Hernandez.&nbsp;He&nbsp;cited several prominent scientists’&nbsp;explanation of these events,&nbsp;referring&nbsp;several times to&nbsp;Nature Communications.&nbsp;This journal article&nbsp;explained&nbsp;that “disturbances on the sun pull on Earth’s magnetic field.” Other&nbsp;experts&nbsp;validate&nbsp;this. &nbsp;Apparently, this&nbsp;tugging&nbsp;triggers “cosmic undulations known as Alfvén waves that launch electrons at high speeds into Earth’s atmosphere where they create the aurora.”&nbsp;This&nbsp;explains&nbsp;that sense of&nbsp;movement&nbsp;humans&nbsp;perceive&nbsp;during&nbsp;these&nbsp;cosmic events.

So,&nbsp;imagine&nbsp;powerful&nbsp;geomagnetic storms agitating uncountable&nbsp;electrons traveling toward Earth. Hernandez’s article referred to Jim Schroeder, physic professor and lead author on&nbsp;the&nbsp;Nature Communications&nbsp;article who compared these electrons to surfers paddling to catch waves.&nbsp;Like&nbsp;a&nbsp;surfer catching&nbsp;a&nbsp;surge of cresting water, these&nbsp;electrons latch onto&nbsp;and ride&nbsp;those&nbsp;Alfvén waves. As a result,&nbsp;their rate of speed&nbsp;increases&nbsp;considerably.&nbsp;Anyone&nbsp;who’s&nbsp;ridden fast amusement park rides, cars,&nbsp;or&nbsp;skis knows&nbsp;speed&nbsp;intensifies&nbsp;excitement.&nbsp;Those&nbsp;faster Alfvén waves&nbsp;affect&nbsp;hitchhiking&nbsp;electrons&nbsp;the same way.&nbsp;

​Eventually, the speed diminishes and those electrons’&nbsp;excitement&nbsp;dwindles.&nbsp;Humans&nbsp;who happen to observe that&nbsp;electro-magnetic calming&nbsp;view&nbsp;a “release of light, which&nbsp;they then&nbsp;see as the aurora.”

Anyone who has surfed&nbsp;can&nbsp;appreciate&nbsp;that scientist’s analogy.&nbsp;Clearly,&nbsp;increasing&nbsp;speed&nbsp;adds thrill, but eventually&nbsp;the rush&nbsp;ends. Where wave-riders&nbsp;immediately&nbsp;search the sea&nbsp;behind them&nbsp;for the next&nbsp;rising&nbsp;crest,&nbsp;spent electrons undulate in&nbsp;multi-colored&nbsp;light&nbsp;waves&nbsp;on the horizon.&nbsp;Ironically,&nbsp;spying this&nbsp;brilliant end result stimulates human nerve endings&nbsp;and shutter clicks. Soon afterward, a&nbsp;flood of northern light&nbsp;images&nbsp;overwhelms&nbsp;internet&nbsp;photo sites.

After missing this chance of a lifetime view of Northern Lights in Kansas, I’ll make a point to stay awake and watch dark skies next time I get an Aurora Alert.

Scientists Finally Know for Sure” written by Joe Hernandez.&nbsp;He&nbsp;cited several prominent scientists’&nbsp;explanation of these events,&nbsp;referring&nbsp;several times to&nbsp;Nature Communications.&nbsp;This journal article&nbsp;explained&nbsp;that “disturbances on the sun pull on Earth’s magnetic field.” Other&nbsp;experts&nbsp;validate&nbsp;this. &nbsp;Apparently, this&nbsp;tugging&nbsp;triggers “cosmic undulations known as Alfvén waves that launch electrons at high speeds into Earth’s atmosphere where they create the aurora.”&nbsp;This&nbsp;explains&nbsp;that sense of&nbsp;movement&nbsp;humans&nbsp;perceive&nbsp;during&nbsp;these&nbsp;cosmic events.So,&nbsp;imagine&nbsp;powerful&nbsp;geomagnetic storms agitating uncountable&nbsp;electrons traveling toward Earth. Hernandez’s article referred to Jim Schroeder, physic professor and lead author on&nbsp;the&nbsp;Nature Communications&nbsp;article who compared these electrons to surfers paddling to catch waves.&nbsp;Like&nbsp;a&nbsp;surfer catching&nbsp;a&nbsp;surge of cresting water, these&nbsp;electrons latch onto&nbsp;and ride&nbsp;those&nbsp;Alfvén waves. As a result,&nbsp;their rate of speed&nbsp;increases&nbsp;considerably.&nbsp;Anyone&nbsp;who’s&nbsp;ridden fast amusement park rides, cars,&nbsp;or&nbsp;skis knows&nbsp;speed&nbsp;intensifies&nbsp;excitement.&nbsp;Those&nbsp;faster Alfvén waves&nbsp;affect&nbsp;hitchhiking&nbsp;electrons&nbsp;the same way.&nbsp;​Eventually, the speed diminishes and those electrons’&nbsp;excitement&nbsp;dwindles.&nbsp;Humans&nbsp;who happen to observe that&nbsp;electro-magnetic calming&nbsp;view&nbsp;a “release of light, which&nbsp;they then&nbsp;see as the aurora.”Anyone who has surfed&nbsp;can&nbsp;appreciate&nbsp;that scientist’s analogy.&nbsp;Clearly,&nbsp;increasing&nbsp;speed&nbsp;adds thrill, but eventually&nbsp;the rush&nbsp;ends. Where wave-riders&nbsp;immediately&nbsp;search the sea&nbsp;behind them&nbsp;for the next&nbsp;rising&nbsp;crest,&nbsp;spent electrons undulate in&nbsp;multi-colored&nbsp;light&nbsp;waves&nbsp;on the horizon.&nbsp;Ironically,&nbsp;spying this&nbsp;brilliant end result stimulates human nerve endings&nbsp;and shutter clicks. Soon afterward, a&nbsp;flood of northern light&nbsp;images&nbsp;overwhelms&nbsp;internet&nbsp;photo sites.After missing this chance of a lifetime view of Northern Lights in Kansas, I’ll make a point to stay awake and watch dark skies next time I get an Aurora Alert.

MADORIN: Magic in Kansas skies

I’ve used this space many times over the years to provide some defense of the political powers and interests of the cities that over 75% of Kansans live in. I did last month in response to a bill in Topeka—which thankfully died in committee—that would have forbidden cities from exercising almost any kind of local control over the businesses which their residents interact with. This month I’m looking at another bill, one that isn’t as egregious a violation of Home Rule on its face, but in the long run might turn out to be just as bad, or worse.

The bill in question is an omnibus bill, containing a large huge number of proposed changes to Kansas tax laws. There is much in it that Kansans of many different political orientations might either criticize or praise, but its “government competition” section deserves special criticism.

As written, it would mean that any restaurant, child-care center, or heath club which operates within five miles of any similar entity which can be defined, on the basis of its tax status, as “owned or operated by a governmental entity,” would be exempt from paying property taxes.

That this provision of the bill is an attempt (the latest of several) by the owners of Genesis Health Clubs to get state legislators to guarantee them the same property-tax exemption which non-profit YMCAs enjoy has been exposed by multiple journalists.&nbsp;It is worth taking a moment, though, to be clear on why a provision like this can get this far.

It’s not simply because of the influence of wealthy constituents and donors. Sure, that’s what philosophers might call the efficient cause of the provision—the part that actually acted to make it happen. But what of its material cause—that is, the substance or context out of which the provision was made or was enabled to come to be, when the efficient cause went to work?

Here I think one can only point to the pervasive disrespect too many in our state government have for the responsibility of the cities and counties to make governing decisions in response to the needs and demands of their own residents.

If we believe in local government, then those local governments obviously need revenue to be able to do the collective work which the citizens who live in those cities and counties ask them to do, particularly when it comes to providing the quality-of-life improvements which many non-profits make available at no (or at least comparatively low) cost to Kansas communities. If this provision becomes law, it could greatly harm the ability of Kansas municipalities to collect property taxes, as it may allow restaurants and gyms operating miles from not just from YMCAs, but from anything as small as a limited-hours deli, or an on-site day-care center, operating inside a city hall or a court house or other public facility, to no longer contribute any property tax to the cities which provide them with fire and police protection and much more. Which would only help undermine the whole point of local democracy in the first place.

With any luck, Governor Kelly will use her line-item veto power to strike out this provision, thus making certain Kansas cities and counties can continue to take responsibility for those things which the Home Rule provision of the state constitution says they should be able to. But as for striking out the disregard too many have the right of municipalities to govern themselves—well, the evidence suggests that will take a lot longer.

 Theft from oil leases is very easy, due to the rural access and oilfield pipe is not traceable. However, these cases are not unsolvable, according to the sheriff's office.

Rand and Patti, originally from&nbsp;Phillipsburg,&nbsp;are both members of the KSU Foundation Board of Trustees, for which Rand served as chair in 2018. A seven-year member of the foundation's board of directors as well, Rand held the positions of vice chair from 2014-15 and chair from 2016-17. Together, the Berneys are lifetime members of the K-State Alumni Association and belong to the President's Club and Land Grant Legacy Society. Serving as co-chairs for the record-breaking Innovation and Inspiration campaign, they helped raise $1.6 billion in support of university initiatives. The Berneys'&nbsp;commitment to K-State has made possible many recent additions and improvements, most notably the Berney Family Welcome Center, the College of Business&nbsp;Administration&nbsp;building and the Ice Family Basketball Center. "We're so appreciative of the many things Rand and Patti have done for the college,"&nbsp;said Kevin Gwinner, Edgerly&nbsp;family&nbsp;dean of the College of Business Administration and marketing professor.&nbsp;"But considering the role they played in the Innovation and Inspiration campaign and the Welcome Center initiative — everything they've been a part of has been a positive experience for K-State,&nbsp;and we wouldn't be where we are today without their support." K9 Zeus’ vest is sponsored by a fundraiser hosted by Brittany Piccola of Watchung, N.J. and will be embroidered with the sentiment “In honor of Nancy Plis." Delivery is expected within eight to ten weeks.

USD 489 children's summer food program to start May 30

At 1:00 a.m., April 28 The City of Russell Fire Department was dispatched to 49 South Kansas, for a report of a detached garage that was on fire.

Crews arriving on scene observed a detached garage at the back of the property fully engulfed.

Crews were able to extinguish the fire quickly once access was gained through a window and garage door.

The fire was brought under control at 02:12 and crews remained on scene looking for extensions and extinguishing hot spots. 

The structure and contents of the garage are a total loss.

After investigation, the cause of the fire is ruled as undetermined.

TOPEKA - The Kansas State High School Activities Association has announced that the 2024 state wrestling tournament will be held in Salina.

In a news release, KSHSAA wrestling administrator Mark Lentz said that due to scheduling issues, the 2024 tournament that is normally held at Gross Memorial Coliseum is being moved to the Tony's Pizza Events Center in Salina.

"The KSHSAA completely understands the scheduling situation with Fort Hays State University, as they and the city of Hays have been and continue to be a great partner with the KSHSAA and our member schools."

With the venue change for 2024, the format for the 3-2-1A Boys, 4A Boys and 4-1A Girls will be altered into a three-day tournament format. The tournament will be held on Thursday, February 22 - Saturday, February 24, 2024.

Changes include: - 3 days of competition weigh-in for each division. - 8 mats will be used for the competition on Thursday and Friday. - 4 mats will be used on Saturday for all consolation semifinals and medal matches. - The schedule will be released later. - All wrestlers will wrestle two matches on Thursday. - The number of rounds on Friday will be determined later. - On Saturday, all medal winners will wrestle, leading into 3 mats of championship finals congruently.

PAWNEE COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 8:30a.m. Friday in Pawnee County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2007 Ford Explorer driven by&nbsp; &nbsp;Kristi Marie Oak, 34, Great Bend, was&nbsp;southbound on 40th Avenue three miles north of Maxville.

The SUV traveled left of center, continued off the roadway into the east ditch, struck a field entrance and rolled multiple times.

EMS transported Oak to the hospital in Larned. She was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

An overnight rain Thursday dropped an official 0.43 inches of rain in Hays according to the K-State Agricultural Research Center south of town.

So far in April, Hays has received 1.10 inches of moisture. The 153-year cumulative average is 2.11 inches.

For the year, Hays is at 3.05 inches. The cumulative average by the end of April is 4.57 inches.&nbsp;

Overnight rain drops 0.43" in Hays; Ellis County in 'exceptional drought'

NORTON —The city of Norton will begin water restrictions.

According to the city web site, due to circumstances and conditions adversely affecting the normal usage of water, including the extreme drought in the region and scheduled maintenance of the water tower, the city is ordering water conservation practices as defined in city code 15-210(c).&nbsp; The order is to begin at 10a.m. Friday

Water restrictions set to begin in Norton

ELLIS — A former bowling alley in Ellis that sat vacant for more than 20 years has been transformed into an elegant event venue.

Dolce Vita, which translates to the good life, encompasses 11,000 square feet.

The space, 203 E. Second, Ellis, has a standing-room capacity for 1,200 people with seating room for 700 to 800 people, making it the largest venue of its type in the area.

It has two wet bars, a catering kitchen, a commercial ice machine, a 15-by-50-foot stage, and state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems.

The stage is equipped with a camera, so action on the stage can be broadcast to TVs throughout the building.

Guy Riedel, owner, completely gutted the space and tore out the drop ceilings to reveal a beautiful truss system and 16-foot ceilings, which he preserved in the remodel.

"I like these old buildings that have good bones," he said. "I know that it looked rough for a lot of years."

The heating and air, plumping and water systems were replaced. Because of the size of the building, Riedel installed zoned HVAC with separate controls for those zones. Zoned HVAC allows the temperature to be cooler on the dance floor and warmer in other parts of the building.

The upper two sections of the building are handicap accessible. There are several steps down to reach the stage and dance floor.

The building has a smaller room that can be partitioned off from the main hall, which has its own bar and bathrooms. That room can seat 100 people and can be rented separately.&nbsp;

This smaller space has multiple TVs for presentations and a cozy gas fireplace.

A mural of the Ellis train depot adorns the west wall of this room. It was original to the building, but Riedel hired local mural artist Dennis Schiel to rehab and extend the painting.

The business encourages renters to bring in their own food or hire a catering service, as well as bring their own alcohol or hire a bartender.

Riedel says he sees many pluses to the location of the event venue. It is next door to a hotel, which has agreed to give the venue patrons block-booking discounts, Riedel and his wife own the liquor store next door and the venue is right off Interstate 70.&nbsp;

Riedel is also in talks with hotels in Hays about offering shuttle service to and from the venue. The venue also has ample parking, Riedel said.

Cost will be $3,000 for the large side of the building and $1,250 for the smaller room and $4,000 for the whole building.

Tables and chairs come with the rental. Renters can use the table decorations that are provided or bring in their own. Dishes, glassware and utensils will need to be provided by the renters.

Both Facebook pages and a website for the venue are under construction.

The event will have a grand opening on May 6. The public is invited. Doors open at 7 p.m. A Wichita band, The Source, will perform. Riedel described the band, which plays tunes from the '60s to the present, as "Chicago on steroids." The cost will be $25 at the door. A cash bar will be available pending approval of the venue's liquor license within the next couple of weeks.

"We hope that will bring in a lot of people and show it off, so we can start booking it a lot more," Riedel said.&nbsp;

Dolce Vita event venue opens in Ellis, seats up to 800

Hays USD 489 has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education.

Now in its 24th year, the Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students.

To qualify for the Best Communities designation, USD 489 answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs.

Responses were verified by school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.

Since the passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act in 2015 and a stated emphasis on a well-rounded education, many school districts have re-committed to music and arts education programs.

During the pandemic, music and arts programs were a vital component to keeping students engaged in school.

ESSA provides designated funding for well-rounded educational opportunities through Title IV Part A Student Academic Success and Achievement grants.

The foundation research has revealed that these grants are being widely used by school districts to address instructional gaps in access to music and arts education.

Research into music education continues to demonstrate educational/cognitive and social skill benefits for children who make music.

After two years of music education, researchers found that participants showed more substantial improvements in how the brain processes speech and reading scores than their less-involved peers and that students who are involved in music are not only more likely to graduate high school but also to attend college.

In addition, everyday listening skills are stronger in musically trained children than in those without music training.

Significantly, listening skills are closely tied to the ability to perceive speech in a noisy background, pay attention and keep sounds in memory. 

Later in life, individuals who took music lessons as children show stronger neural processing of sound. Young adults and even older adults who have not played an instrument for up to 50 years show enhanced neural processing compared to their peers. Not to mention, social benefits include conflict resolution, teamwork skills and how to give and receive constructive criticism.

The foundation is a nonprofit supported in part by the National Association of Music Merchants and its 15,000 member companies and individual professionals. The foundation advances active participation in music-making across the lifespan by supporting scientific research, philanthropic giving and public service programs. USD 489’s music education program receives national recognition

This year’s Hays Public Library Summer Challenge theme is "All Together Now!" The challenge will run from May 22 to July 29.

The library will use the online program Beanstack to track summer reading for children and teens. Through Beanstack, families register participants and use the program to log their reading progress. Staff will assist with sign-up and logging for those without computer access. Challenges have been created for each age group, early literacy, elementary, and young adult.

For children and teens, the Summer Challenge is an exciting way to improve literacy during the summer months.&nbsp;Numerous studies show that kids who don't read during&nbsp;summer&nbsp;vacation, actually slip in reading ability by the time school begins in the fall.

Registration is required and begins May 1, online or in person. Each child who registers receives a gift. A prize will be given to each child who completes their challenge by the end of the event on July 29. Those who complete the challenge also will put their name in a drawing for the grand prize of their choice. The ending party this year will be held at the Hays Aquatic Park. Only those who complete the Summer Challenge by July 26 will receive an invitation to the pool party.

Adults participate in the Summer Challenge by completing activities on a bookmark that can be picked up at the library, beginning May 22. They will receive a tote bag when they sign up. There will be 12 challenges. Adults will have until July 28 to complete all the challenges and submit an entry into the end of the summer adult prize drawing.&nbsp;

A day of activities will kick off the Challenge on May 22nd. Along with crafts and snacks, the day will include performances by Jammin’ Randy at 10 a.m., Jetpack Jason at 1 p.m., and the Wizard of Oz Museum at 3 p.m.
