FTC: Joining forces to help stop scam calls

“Saving the critical water sources that power the agriculture industry—the backbone of our state economy—and securing a reliable, safe water supply for residents and businesses across Kansas for years to come are nonpartisan issues,”&nbsp;said Kelly.&nbsp;“There is more to be done, but these bills represent an important step forward in that fight by providing needed funding and clear policies around water management works towards ensuring a safe, sustainable water supply for generations of Kansans to come.”

In 2022, Governor Kelly fully funded the state water plan for the first time since 2008. 

Senate Substitute for House Bill 2302 represents a significant increase in funding for water, adding $18 million on top of the annual $8 million for the state water plan and $17 million for the two grant funds. In total, the bill designates an additional $35 million in funding to protect essential water resources. 

The bill includes that it is legislative intent to continue this funding through 2027.

“We have been working with the Kansas Water Office and local vendors for the last four years to evaluate different irrigation technologies and evaluate their effectiveness in an on farm environment,”&nbsp;said Ryan Goering, of R&amp;E Goering Farms, LLC.&nbsp;“The results of this work indicate new technologies can reduce water consumption and reduce energy use while sustaining yields. The increased funding will allow these efforts to expand and accelerate the awareness and adoption of water conserving technologies by farmers.”

House Bill 2279 requires Kansas’ five Groundwater Management Districts to submit annual reports to the Kansas legislature with updated water conservation and stabilization plans to the Kansas Department of Agriculture.

The reports to the legislature will outline expenditures for water conservation efforts and stabilization of agricultural consumption. A Groundwater Management District oversees the management of groundwater resources, conservation, and use in five regions of the state with significant aquifer storage and use.

"We must protect a safe and secure water supply for all Kansans,”&nbsp;Connie Owen, director of the Kansas Water Office, said.&nbsp;“With these two bills, we demonstrate our commitment to enhanced investment in solving water challenges of all kinds and our specific dedication to addressing the depletion of the High Plains Aquifer. Our children, grandchildren, and all future generations of Kansans need us to get this right. We are now on the right track.”

THOMAS COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 6p.m. Wednesday in Thomas County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2016 Freightliner semi driven by&nbsp; Yadian Beovides Novoa, 33, Miami Florida, was westbound on Interstate 70 five miles west of U.S. 24.

The vehicle overturned when straightline winds during a thunderstorm blew through.&nbsp;&nbsp;EMS transported Novoa to Citizens Medical Center in Colby. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After a near two-year investigation that included confronting a suspected poacher at his job in Kansas, Colorado Parks and Wildlife has secured a conviction in the case of a bull moose illegally killed in Teller County and left to rot, according to a media release from the Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

The case ended July 10 when Steven Samuelson, 33, of Oakley, Kan., pleaded guilty in Teller County District Court to willful destruction of wildlife, a felony, as well as misdemeanor charges of hunting without a proper and valid big game license, aggravated illegal possession of wildlife, failure to prepare wildlife for human consumption, hunting in a careless manner and illegal take of wildlife.

Samuelson received a two year deferred jail sentence on the felony charge, meaning it will be waived if he meets the terms of the plea agreement, and two years unsupervised probation.

In addition, Samuelson was fined nearly $20,000 and surrendered the bow he used to poach the moose as well as other property that contained evidence of the crime including his cellphone. Samuelson also was assessed 65 points against his hunting license, with just 20 needed to suspend his hunting privileges.

CPW’s Tim Kroening, Area Wildlife Manager for the Pikes Peak region, praised the public for calling CPW when they suspected poaching. And he credited Samuelson’s plea agreement to the relentless investigative work by CPW officers who amassed overwhelming evidence against the Kansan.

“As the agency responsible for perpetuating the wildlife resources of the state, Colorado Parks and Wildlife will not tolerate poaching,” Kroening said. “Our officers are determined to stop people like Mr. Samuelson who think they can simply go kill any animal they like. I want to make it clear: Mr. Samuelson was not a hunter. He is a poacher.”

The investigation began in September 2021 when CPW’s office in Colorado Springs received a report that someone had illegally shot a bull moose with an arrow in the woods north of Divide.

CPW Officers Aaron Berscheid, Travis Sauder and Ben Meier responded to the area to investigate and were led to the remains of the mature bull moose by the reporting parties.

The CPW team concluded a suspected poacher had shot the moose and then attempted to remove the head of the animal. Ultimately, the suspect laid tree branches and sticks across the carcass in an attempt to hide it.

Officers collected physical evidence from the site including photos and video from the reporting party’s game cameras which pinpointed the time of the incident and provided photos of the suspect.

“This moose was treated unethically and that is something we take very seriously,” said Sauder, assistant area wildlife manager for the Pikes Peak region. “We are fortunate members of the public share our passion for wildlife and helped us catch the poacher.

“We rely on honest sportspeople to help us solve these types of cases.”

Besides the public’s help, CPW used old-fashioned police work to track Samuelson down. The investigation reached a climax when Sauder and Meier drove to Kansas where they worked with members of the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks to confront Samuelson at work and execute a search warrant to gather valuable evidence at Samuelson’s Oakley home.

Kroening and Sauder praised the assistance their team received from the original reporting parties who hiked them to the moose, the Colorado Springs Police Department for helping access evidence on Samuelson's phone, and prosecutors with the Fourth Judicial District Attorney's office for moving the case forward and securing the plea agreement.

“Moose have become an iconic part of the Colorado landscape and have flourished since being reintroduced in 1978,” Kroening said. “The current population is estimated to be near 3,000 animals and they have spread throughout the state.&nbsp;

“While this creates many wonderful opportunities to photograph, view and hunt these animals, it has also created temptation among some to illegally poach these animals. The Samuelson case, and others, show CPW is determined to stop future poachers.”

 </figure>COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After a near two-year investigation that included confronting a suspected poacher at his job in Kansas, Colorado Parks and Wildlife has secured a conviction in the case of a bull moose illegally killed in Teller County and left to rot, according to a media release from the Colorado Parks and Wildlife.The case ended July 10 when Steven Samuelson, 33, of Oakley, Kan., pleaded guilty in Teller County District Court to willful destruction of wildlife, a felony, as well as misdemeanor charges of hunting without a proper and valid big game license, aggravated illegal possession of wildlife, failure to prepare wildlife for human consumption, hunting in a careless manner and illegal take of wildlife.Samuelson received a two year deferred jail sentence on the felony charge, meaning it will be waived if he meets the terms of the plea agreement, and two years unsupervised probation.In addition, Samuelson was fined nearly $20,000 and surrendered the bow he used to poach the moose as well as other property that contained evidence of the crime including his cellphone. Samuelson also was assessed 65 points against his hunting license, with just 20 needed to suspend his hunting privileges.<figure>

 </figure>CPW’s Tim Kroening, Area Wildlife Manager for the Pikes Peak region, praised the public for calling CPW when they suspected poaching. And he credited Samuelson’s plea agreement to the relentless investigative work by CPW officers who amassed overwhelming evidence against the Kansan.“As the agency responsible for perpetuating the wildlife resources of the state, Colorado Parks and Wildlife will not tolerate poaching,” Kroening said. “Our officers are determined to stop people like Mr. Samuelson who think they can simply go kill any animal they like. I want to make it clear: Mr. Samuelson was not a hunter. He is a poacher.”The investigation began in September 2021 when CPW’s office in Colorado Springs received a report that someone had illegally shot a bull moose with an arrow in the woods north of Divide.<figure>

 </figure>CPW Officers Aaron Berscheid, Travis Sauder and Ben Meier responded to the area to investigate and were led to the remains of the mature bull moose by the reporting parties.The CPW team concluded a suspected poacher had shot the moose and then attempted to remove the head of the animal. Ultimately, the suspect laid tree branches and sticks across the carcass in an attempt to hide it.Officers collected physical evidence from the site including photos and video from the reporting party’s game cameras which pinpointed the time of the incident and provided photos of the suspect.“This moose was treated unethically and that is something we take very seriously,” said Sauder, assistant area wildlife manager for the Pikes Peak region. “We are fortunate members of the public share our passion for wildlife and helped us catch the poacher.“We rely on honest sportspeople to help us solve these types of cases.”Besides the public’s help, CPW used old-fashioned police work to track Samuelson down. The investigation reached a climax when Sauder and Meier drove to Kansas where they worked with members of the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks to confront Samuelson at work and execute a search warrant to gather valuable evidence at Samuelson’s Oakley home.Kroening and Sauder praised the assistance their team received from the original reporting parties who hiked them to the moose, the Colorado Springs Police Department for helping access evidence on Samuelson's phone, and prosecutors with the Fourth Judicial District Attorney's office for moving the case forward and securing the plea agreement.“Moose have become an iconic part of the Colorado landscape and have flourished since being reintroduced in 1978,” Kroening said. “The current population is estimated to be near 3,000 animals and they have spread throughout the state.&nbsp;“While this creates many wonderful opportunities to photograph, view and hunt these animals, it has also created temptation among some to illegally poach these animals. The Samuelson case, and others, show CPW is determined to stop future poachers.”

NW  Kansas man fined $20K for poaching moose in Colorado

Hays, Kan.—The Sunflower Electric Power Corp. Board of Directors has appointed Steve Epperson as interim president and CEO, effective immediately.

Epperson will replace Todd Hillman, who served as Sunflower’s president and CEO since January.

“We want to thank Todd for his service to Sunflower, and we wish him all the best in his future endeavors,” said Wes Campbell, Sunflower’s board chairman. “We believe Steve is an excellent choice to serve in this interim role and lead Sunflower. These changes will enable Sunflower and our members to continue building on our success.”

More than 50 local entities, agencies and businesses are set
to take part in the first annual Community Fair sponsored by the Ellis County
Health Department Saturday at Big Creek Crossing in Hays.

The idea for the fair came from a realization by health
department officials that there is a need in the community to spread the word about all of the services that are offered in Ellis County. Ellis County
Health Director Kim Reel said the fair is a way of reintroducing businesses to
the community.

“Now that we are post-COVID, we realized that there
are some agencies within our community that maybe other members of the
community are not aware of the services that they provide,” Reel said.

There are 57 different businesses and programs that will be
on hand Saturday at the event ranging from senior care living to small business
owners, to health care facilities.

Health Department Administrative Assistant Brittany Thomas said
the goal of the fair is to spread awareness about the resources that are
offered in Ellis County.

“We want everybody to know what the resources are in our
community. We're not self-limiting to just us and or even just health care. We
want people to know exactly what's out there,” Thomas said. “There's been a lot of
businesses that were affected by COVID, and so just knowing that the places are
still open and available.”

Thomas said it’s not just about health care. Examples she
gave were the Gamers Guild, which will have a booth and Hays Recreation Commission also will be set up
to provide information on the activities it offers. 

“We think that's part of the mental health aspect too, being
able to go out and do something you love just getting out,” Thomas said. “Everything
ties into public health, even if it's mental health and whatever you're
doing out outside of your normal eight-to-five job.”

that will be a part of Saturday’s event at the end of this story.

Reel said she thinks there is a misunderstanding of what
some of the organizations have to offer.

“There are a number of resources available within our
community, from Options to dealing with domestic violence, which has been
unfortunately, we've seen an increase because of COVID,” Reel said. “To our EMS
where they can provide CPR [classes] to your business, or they have classes that they
offer to a small business that maybe wants to get something started because
they want to start a family of their own and they're actually starting a
business to stay at home with their kids to provide an income.”

Saturday also marks the annual Downtown Hays Development Corp. Bazaar on the Bricks event
in downtown Hays, and Reel said she hopes people will attend the event downtown and then come to the mall and view everything the businesses and organizations
have to offer.

She said the organizers' goal is to help people invest in the Hays and
Ellis County communities.

“We just want to see people just invest here within our
community, whether you're shopping, see what we have to offer in Hays before
you shop online at Amazon, because of the convenience,” Reel said. 

During the event, the health department also will provide
back-to-school physicals and immunizations. The event is partnering with the Fort
Hays State Sigma, Nu Zeta Chapter to offer blood pressure screenings. A link to
the physical forms is available on the Ellis County Health Department website. Interested
parties can sign up or they are also taking walkups for both physicals and the
blood pressure checks. 

Saturday’s event runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. inside Big Creek
Crossing. They will be set up in the old Hallmark location with booths spread
throughout the mall. Food trucks will be in the mall parking lot. 

The event also will have a couple of drawings available that day for
both kids and adults. There also will be a chance to sign up for the Eagle
Radio Keystone Light UTV Giveaway made possible by A&amp;A Coors and Advantage
Glass Plus.

Please explain why you are running for school board in 500 words or less. I am running for USD 489 school board because I believe in the potential that this school district has for this community. My first obligation, if elected, will be to the children in our district by providing them through the staff, the resources necessary to allow them to obtain quality educational opportunities. Alongside the administration, I want to focus on educational priorities to ensure our children are proficient in their curriculum to help move them forward in their careers and lives as stewards of our community.

All employees of USD 489 are equally important, and I will encourage open conversation and will highlight the importance of communication to continue to serve our children and families as best we can.

I will do my best at representing the taxpayer in being fiscally responsible in the district but also identifying smart growth in our school system that allows our city and county to grow and prosper. As you view a city or town to live in, one of the first things you research is the schools that are there. I believe USD 489 can be the highlight of our community, and with the development and growth in building and revitalizing the district that was passed by the voters, Hays will be seen as one of the best districts in the state of Kansas. However, it is not just the buildings that provide a better education. It takes the students, the parents, the teachers, the administrators, the staff, the board and the entire community to ensure our children grow into well-rounded individuals.

If elected, I will work for all students by keeping them as my main focus for USD 489.

Hays USD 489 school board candidate: Ruth Ruder

SHERMAN COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 6p.m. Wednesday in Sherman County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2019 Freightliner semi driven by Steven K. Yoho, 60, Wichita, was eastbound on Interstate 70 one mile west of County Road 2.

&nbsp;A gust of wind pushed the semi's empty trailer towards the median. The semi jack knifed and came to rest in the median.

EMS transported Yoho to Citizen's Medical Center. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

The administration’s ongoing commitment to supporting the development of community assets once again includes almost $1 million specifically to address the shortage of child care options.

“Local nonprofit organizations across the state are working diligently to address issues that have a tremendous impact on communities, the Kansans who live there, and their quality of life,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said.&nbsp;“The Community Service Tax Credit Program is a valuable tool that allows the state to support their efforts.”

CSP tax credits have been issued in the Sunflower State since 1994. The program provides a 70% tax credit to qualified donors in rural communities (populations less than 15,000) and a 50% tax credit in larger communities. The credits are a direct deduction from the donor’s state tax obligation.

The CSP program amplifies fundraising activities for non-profits and boosts large capital campaigns. Any individual or business subject to Kansas income tax is eligible to receive a tax credit through this program.

This year, CSP will assist six counties with building new or upgrading existing child care facilities. Other community projects across the state include housing for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, a center for youth who have aged out of the foster system, a dormitory for children in acute psychiatric crises, a community wellness facility, historic renovations, health care equipment, and more.

“The ingenuity these organizations display as they improve their communities is inspiring and deserves support,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said.&nbsp;“Creating healthy, vibrant communities where people want to live allows local and state economies to grow.”

Awarded nonprofits were chosen through a highly competitive, score-based selection process.&nbsp;

The program provides a 70% tax credit to qualified donors in rural communities (populations less than 15,000) and a 50% tax credit in larger communities. The credits are a direct deduction from the donor’s state tax obligation.The CSP program amplifies fundraising activities for non-profits and boosts large capital campaigns. Any individual or business subject to Kansas income tax is eligible to receive a tax credit through this program.This year, CSP will assist six counties with building new or upgrading existing child care facilities. Community Service Tax Credits awarded to area non-profit organizations

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recently offered tips as the weather heats up this summer. With fair week upon us, here are some reminders.

•Stay Cool! •Wear Appropriate Clothing: Choose lightweight, loose-fitting clothing. •Stay Cool Indoors: Stay in an air-conditioned place as much as possible. If your home does not have air conditioning, go to the shopping mall or public library—even a few hours spent in air conditioning can help your body stay cooler when you go back into the heat.&nbsp;Use your stove and oven less to maintain a cooler temperature in your home. •Schedule Outdoor Activities Carefully:&nbsp;Try to limit your outdoor activity to when it’s coolest, like morning and evening hours. Rest often in shady areas so that your body has a chance to recover.&nbsp;&nbsp; •Pace Yourself:&nbsp;Cut down on exercise during the heat. If you’re not accustomed to working or exercising in a hot environment, start slowly and pick up the pace gradually. If exertion in the heat makes your heart pound and leaves you gasping for breath, STOP all activity. Get into a cool area or into the shade, and rest, especially if you become lightheaded, confused, weak, or faint.&nbsp;&nbsp; •Wear Sunscreen:&nbsp;Sunburn affects your body’s ability to cool down and can make you dehydrated. If you must go outdoors, protect yourself from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and by putting on sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher 30 minutes prior to going out. Continue to reapply it according to the package directions.&nbsp;&nbsp;Tip: Look for sunscreens that say “broad spectrum” or “UVA/UVB protection” on their labels- these products work best. •Do Not Leave Children in Cars: Cars can quickly heat up to dangerous temperatures, even with a window cracked open. While anyone left in a parked car is at risk, children are especially at risk of getting a heat stroke or dying.&nbsp;&nbsp; •Avoid Hot and Heavy Meals: They add heat to your body!&nbsp;&nbsp; •Stay Hydrated:&nbsp;Drink Plenty of Fluids: Drink more fluids, regardless of how active you are. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink.&nbsp;Warning: If your doctor limits the amount you drink or has you on water pills, ask how much you should drink while the weather is hot.&nbsp;Stay away from very sugary or alcoholic drinks—these actually cause you to lose more body fluid. Also avoid very cold drinks, because they can cause stomach cramps. •Replace Salt and Minerals: Heavy sweating removes salt and minerals from the body that need to be replaced. A sports drink can replace the salt and minerals you lose in sweat. If you are on a low-salt diet, have diabetes, high blood pressure, or other chronic conditions, talk with your doctor before drinking a sports beverage or taking salt tablets. •Keep Your Pets Hydrated: Provide plenty of fresh water for your pets, and leave the water in a shady area.&nbsp;&nbsp; •Stay Informed:&nbsp;Check your local news for extreme heat alerts and safety tips and to learn about any cooling shelters in your area.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; •Know the Signs: Learn the signs and symptoms of heat-related illnesses and how to treat them.&nbsp;&nbsp; •Use a Buddy System:&nbsp;When working in the heat, monitor the condition of your co-workers and have someone do the same for you. Heat-induced illness can cause a person to become confused or lose consciousness. If you are 65 years of age or older, have a friend or relative call to check on you twice a day during a heat wave. If you know someone in this age group, check on them at least twice a day. •Monitor Those at High Risk: Although anyone at any time can suffer from heat-related illness, some people are at greater risk than others: &nbsp;· Infants and young children · People 65 years of age or older · People who are overweight · People who overexert during work or exercise · People who are physically ill, especially with heart disease or high blood pressure, or who take certain medications, such as for depression, insomnia, or poor circulation.

The Ellis County Fair does have air-conditioned buildings so please come in and get out of the heat if you need to. We also have sunscreen available donated by the Ellis County Cancer Council. We will have a mother’s room available if you want a private space to get out of the heat to feed your baby in the Unrein building!

WASHINGTON, D.C.&nbsp;– U.S. Senators Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) and Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) introduced the&nbsp;Voluntary Groundwater Conservation Act&nbsp;to give family farmers and ranchers the flexibility they need to protect groundwater sources while keeping their agricultural lands in production. “The ongoing drought in Kansas is putting a strain on groundwater supply, including the Ogallala aquifer,”&nbsp;said Moran.&nbsp;“This legislation would enable farmers and ranchers to join a voluntary water conservation program to leverage their land and water resources with USDA, providing incentives for reducing groundwater use. This easement program is modeled after the experience of Colorado Open Lands, which signed the first-ever groundwater easement in 2022 for the Rio Grande River Basin. Discussion about a potential common alcohol consumption area in downtown Hays will continue during Thursday's city commission work session.

Commissioners first talked about the idea at their <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/8b222c8f-4665-4812-9b19-d40f55f24721">June 6 work session</a>. Areas of consideration included Seventh Street to 13th Street and Fort to Oak or Walnut to Oak in order to include Taco Shop and The Golden Q.&nbsp;

State law previously required roads within a common consumption area to be blocked to vehicle traffic.&nbsp;

The requirement was modified July 1 and now areas need only to be posted with signage designating the boundaries and hours of operation.

The common consumption area in Old Town Wichita was referenced in the discussion for what the jurisdiction would look like for residents and businesses in downtown Hays.

Concerns about littering, access by minors, and other issues will again be discussed.

Commissioners will also get their first chance to talk about the proposed 2024 city budget and request any modifications.

The budget will be discussed at the next two work sessions as well. 

The work session begins at 4 p.m. Thursday in Hays City Hall, 1507 Main.&nbsp;

Common alcohol consumption areas to be discussed again by Hays city commission

This is day 13 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

In far western Kansas, wheat harvest is well behind schedule due to weather delays that have also brought hail damage. Despite the disruptions, elevators are generally seeing a better harvest than was anticipated this spring, although hail is hindering final yields for some and test weights are declining as producers wait for conditions to dry out enough to finish cutting.&nbsp;

Harvest is still going in western Wichita County, but most producers should wrap up by the weekend across the draw area for Scott Coop, according to grain merchandiser Brinlee McNary.&nbsp;

McNary said the crop looked pretty bleak in March, but thanks to spring rains they have taken in more bushels than they expected. Combines started rolling around July 4, about 10 days behind normal, but rain delays meant most producers spent a week out of the fields before resuming cutting.&nbsp;

The wheat has been high on protein, averaging 13 percent, but test weights have been falling from initial highs due to the rain, now at 58 pounds per bushel. Producers have seen a very wide range of yields from 20 to 70 bushels per acre.&nbsp;

Overall, McNary said Scott Coop will take in about half of their five-year average. That wheat will likely stay within the United States and be sent to flour mills or Kansas gluten plants, instead of traveling south on the rail to the Gulf of Mexico for export.&nbsp;

Harvest also started at least 10 days late in Sherman County, reported Brian Linin who farms near Goodland. About half of his wheat was destroyed, with crop insurance estimates of 0.6 to 1.7 bushels per acre. Linin’s 76-year-old father can’t remember having this much trouble getting wheat up in the fall in all his years of farming.&nbsp;

Despite the initial loss, three generations still came together to run combines this year - Brian, his father Brent and his son Blair. Test weights are averaging 58.5 pounds per bushel while proteins range from 11 to 12 percent.&nbsp;

Linin's irrigated wheat is yielding 60 to 65 bushels per acre and his dryland wheat is yielding 50 to 60 bushels per acre. The range is wider than normal due to variation between heads that are not quite ripe and others that are overripe - three days ago there were still green heads in the field. Hail also hit Sherman County last week, but Linin’s wheat fields were largely spared.&nbsp;

“The only silver lining is that this wheat is this good,” Linin said, noting a big benefit from planting into stubble to set up yield potential. “The dryland fields are a big surprise.”&nbsp;

Linin will deliver his wheat to Frontier Ag or Scoular, which will go on to the domestic mill market.&nbsp;

Eric Sperber of Cornerstone Ag in Colby also noted that the Thomas County area has never started wheat harvest this late.&nbsp;The first combines finally started rolling on July 10. With high humidity, most producers can’t start cutting until early evening, but fields have finally really ripened up in the last two days.&nbsp;

He reported test weights are struggling, averaging just over 58 pounds per bushel. Overall protein is averaging 12.1 percent, but he’s seen from eight percent up to 14 percent. Recent hail did not zero out a lot of acres, but impacted fields are now yielding half of their pre-hail potential due to shattering. Yields range from 25 bushels per acre on hail-damaged fields up to 70 bushels per acre for dryland wheat.&nbsp;

Sperber said there has been a lot of variation within fields with original tillers ripening on time, followed by taller secondary tillers ripening a few days later and then suckerheads growing even taller and ripening a few days after that. Producers have faced a number of difficulties this growing season - abandoning some poor stands in the fall, battling weeds, dealing with wheat suffering from winterkill from a cold snap in December that affected wheat with poor root structure and disease pressure from rust on fields that did not have fungicide applied.&nbsp;

“It has been a challenging crop this year from planting to harvest,” Sperber said. “It’s been really weird.”

Harvest is now 50 to 60 percent complete and needs another seven days of average weather to finish up. Sperber said they need sunshine, otherwise, the current weather will mean harvest will take much longer.&nbsp;Overall, he expects they will take in about the same number of bushels as the five-year average, due to an increase in acres. He had expected more before hail struck the area.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“It’s amazing with the amount of moisture we had,” he said.&nbsp;

Harvest also has about a week left to go - if there’s no rain - for Mike Sieck near Edson in Sherman County. Harvest started on July 8 but has never really kicked into full swing because most days they cannot start until noon or later - some days as late as 4:00 in the afternoon - due to humidity and scattered rains.&nbsp;

Sieck did apply fungicide, a good decision as quite a bit of stripe rust has moved into the area in the last couple of weeks. Weeds are also a contention as they aren’t dying in the cooler weather.&nbsp;

Hail has also hit the area hard. Sieck will still harvest some of the hail-damaged fields for seed wheat, even though yields have decreased to 25 bushels per acre. His average for dryland wheat is 45 bushels per acre but ranges widely. Test weights are decent at 59 to 61 pounds per bushel and protein is excellent at 13.5 to 14.5 percent.&nbsp;

He reported WestBred’s WB 4422, a replacement for Grainfield, has done well, as have the Kansas Wheat Alliance-developed varieties - KS Providence, KS Territory and KS Hamilton. North of Bird City and St. Francis, producers caught more snow and wheat is yielding even better, some places as high as 90 bushels per acre on dryland fields.&nbsp;

With varying yields and weather delays, producers are ready to close the book on the 2023 wheat harvest.
