ELLIS — Congratulations to Homecoming King and Queen, Mason Younger and Jadyn Starns, who were crowned at our football game on Friday, October 6. 

  Ellis High School had a fabulous week celebrating homecoming! 

 The class of 2025, the junior class, were the overall spirit winners.  In addition, the junior class won best float featuring a Halloween theme.  The juniors continued their winning streak by being the only class to defeat the faculty and staff in volleyball.

Ellis High School crowns homecoming royalty

When I first met my husband, a field-trained black lab owned him.

 Rebel, an intelligent canine, shared a personality mix of laid-back house dog and determined hunter. This retriever and his favorite human had enjoyed several years of rustic bachelorhood at Meade State Fish Hatchery where Reb mastered responding to both verbal and hands signals. Dog and man led an idyllic life hunting, fishing, and working fishponds located far from town and people.

Once I married his human and joined their crew, Rebel determined I improved both his treat and couch-lounging opportunities. It didn’t take long for the black beast to make room for me in his Labrador heart. 

Not long after our wedding, my husband changed jobs and transferred from Meade Lake to Ellis. Moving to town forced Rebel to accept a difficult adjustment to his previously perfect life. He had to trade working fishponds for retrieving evening papers and supervising a garden.

Though he missed the freedom of roaming hatchery grounds where he rousted game birds and helped his favorite human feed and care for fish, Rebel discovered new delights. Our at-the-edge-of-town yard contained a mulberry, pear, and apple trees, which begs the question, “Why would fruit trees offer a bonus in a Labrador retriever’s life?”

This particular dog loved fruit, especially mulberries, pears, and apples—especially once they fell to the ground and fermented a few days. Yes, our pet was a fruit drop lush.

In early summer, I’d find him sleeping soundly amidst mounds of fallen mulberries, his distended belly rising and falling rhythmically with each breath. I laughed to see purple mulberry stains circling his muzzle following his binges. Once he awoke from a boozy snooze, he’d gaze with unfocused eyes and wobble as he rose to greet me. His fruity indulgences didn’t alter this loving dog’s happy personality.

In early fall, if I called and Reb didn’t come running, I’d look for him sleeping off a toot under our pear and apple trees, heavy head weighing down paws. Yeasty, fermented fruit scent permeated the air while low flying, inebriated wasps sipped mushy pulp or circled tipsily above over-ripe yellow and red orbs and Rebel. 

To my surprise, the insects never stung when I collected fruit they crawled in and out of. Their tranquility explained our pet’s relaxed state.

I didn’t want to encourage addiction in our beloved retriever, so I’d race him to fallen fruit once I arrived home from work. He mastered a hang-dog look that nearly broke my heart as I tossed his beloved apples and pears into a five-gallon bucket. That gaze tore me apart with guilt for removing him from the freedom of the fish hatchery and transferring him to town. Then I deprived him of his one pleasure that made city-living worthwhile.

Rebel has been gone for decades, and we later moved from the house surrounded by pear and apple trees. Despite time’s passage, the dog days of late summer and slow-moving wasps vividly remind me of a gentle black dog that made room in his heart for a new family member and found a unique way to deal with town life.

MADORIN: Drunk dogs and wasps

It's an opportunity to get rid of unwanted items that aren't normally picked up for refuse customers by the city of Hays.

The annual fall cleanup starts Monday, and you can now begin stowing what you don't want in your alley or at your curbside collection area.

"It's a free service for the city of Hays customers," said Marvin Honas, solid waste division superintendent.

"We'll be making one pass through the entire city. We don't go back," he stressed.

Curbside customers will be serviced first, then the collections move to alley customers.

Residents are asked to sort their unwanted goods into four piles:

1.&nbsp;Construction and Demolition Debris • Bricks, drywall, lumber, plaster, sinks, insulation, roofing materials, etc.

2. White Goods and Metals • Washers, dryers, siding, guttering, metal playground sets, refrigerators (freon does not have to be removed; do remove interior contents), lawn mowers, etc.

3. Tree Limbs and Brush •&nbsp;No longer than 12 feet in length or 6 inches in diameter • All yard and garden waste must be bagged

4. Municipal Waste • Carpet, furniture,&nbsp; plastics, fiberglass garage doors, etc.

Employees will spend 20 minutes at each location loading discards and 10 minutes removing trees.

Last year, getting rid of the tree limbs took longer than Honas anticipated so he made a change.

"This year we will be chipping the trees with two different crews, so we're going try that and see if it gets done in a little bit more timely fashion," he said.&nbsp;

If workers have to leave something behind, residents will be notified, Honas said. Crews will not pick up tires, batteries, medical waste or household hazardous waste such as paint. Household hazardous waste can be taken to the Ellis County Sanitary Landfill,&nbsp;1515 W. 55th St., free of charge, Honas said.

If you want to keep some items, Honas suggested setting them away from the disposal pile and marking them clearly to not be removed.

🎙 Post Podcast: Cottonwood Extension District prepares for regional community visit

Shaina Prough has been involved with the DECA Trick or Treat So Others Can Eat since 1984 when she was in high school. Then, in 1999, she took over as the DECA adviser at Hays High School and has been involved in the program every year since then with her students.

On Tuesday evening, 23 groups of volunteers from churches, 4-H, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, Fort Hays State University, along with student council members from Hays High and Thomas More Prep-Marian went door-to-door in Hays collecting non-perishable food for the Community Assistance Center, 1108 Oak.

Then they brought the goods to the center where the DECA volunteers helped unload the carts and bags. More volunteers sorted and counted the food, which was then moved into the pantry.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"It's a chance for them to bond together outside of class and give back to the community," Prough said. "I believe our students are generous at heart, and this gives them more avenues to show that."

Abi Banks, a DECA senior who plans to go into fashion marketing, directed the food haulers through the doors and into the sorting area.&nbsp;

"I think it's really fun to learn all about the different elements of business and different ways to help out in your community," Banks said.

"We had nearly bare shelves," said Theresa Hill, director of the food bank. "People's incomes aren't stretching as far for groceries as they used to."

If you were missed during Tuesday's collection night, donations are still being accepted until the end of the month at the center for this food drive.

Hill and Prough were both impressed with the generous donations coming through the door.

"We hope to hit 19,000 individual items. That's the highest total we've ever had," Hill said.

Cash donations are also accepted for purchasing milk and other perishable items.

Ellis County Sherriff's incidents report Oct. 1-7

Inmates at the Ellis County Jail are set to get access to tablets
that will allow for better communication, educational opportunities and access
to the jail commissary funds without any additional cost to the taxpayer.

Sheriff Scott Braun presented the Ellis County Commission with
the plan Tuesday to implement a program with 35 tablets within the jail.

Braun said since the remodel of the Ellis County Jail in
2016 inmates have used the Kiosks system within each jail pod to make phone
calls. That system replaced the old system of having one phone that was used by
all the inmates.

Now as technology continues to advance Braun says it is time
for Ellis County to update the jail's technology.

“With technology, it’s one of those things where we either move
ahead or we lose,” Braun said. “This technology will allow them to do a lot
more with the tablet.”

The tablets will allow inmates to do a number of things, including
watch movies, play games, listen to music, read books as well as send and read
texts, emails and U.S. mail.

Braun said he believes that the jail will be better off by
providing the technology to the inmates.

“It’s a different thought process,” Braun said, “but it's
technology and it’s the way things are going and we’re not the first one to try
this.”

The tablets will come from Crown Correctional Telephone. They estimated the county would need 35 tables, about half the
average number of inmates housed in the county jail. Braun said Tuesday
morning there were 74 inmates in the jail, so they may need to add to the 35
tablets.

Crown Correctional Telephone has already worked with other
jails in Kansas to implement a similar system.

Braun said the Ellis County Information Technology
Department created and will maintain the system that the tablets run on, which will
allow the county to save money on the project.

Because the system is maintained by the county IT department,
there will be no access to functions outside of what is allowed. That includes
no access to social media or Google, Braun said.

“They’re really locked down, and there’s just not much they
can do with it,” Braun said.

The tablets will be leased to the inmates for $15 a month, and they will pay for the system. Braun said it will not cost taxpayers.

The money collected from tablet leases will go to the inmate
fund, and the inmates will then pay for the system themselves.

Braun said if the inmates want to make a phone call, other
than to their attorney, they will have to pay for it. The inmates will also pay
to send and receive text and instant messages or emails. 

They can also order commissary items through the tablet. A commissary serves as a type of store that allows inmates to purchase items that could
include snacks and hygiene items.

Inmates receive the money to pay for the tablets and other
services through family and friends. 

Braun said they offer two ways people can provide funds to
inmates. The first is through a machine in the lobby of the sheriff’s office or
over the internet. 

Inmates who cannot afford the tablets will still have access
to the commissary through the Kiosks system.

The tablets cost $550. Braun said if an inmate breaks the
tablet, they will be charged, and the county will seek restitution for the
damaged device.

Braun said the tablets allow inmates to have greater
communication with family members and that has a number of benefits.

“Studies have shown that it decreases recidivism and it also
has shown that it helps prevent mental problems in our jail,” Braun said. “We have
a lot of inmates with mental health issues.”

Braun estimated 40 to 60 percent of inmates in the jail have
some mental health issues.

The implementation of the tablets has also helped to
decrease the number of discipline issues.

“I’m not going to lie to you (and say) that we still won’t
have issues, but it has decreased it dramatically across jails as well
as within the prison system,” Braun said.

Commissioner Michael Berges said he believes it’s a “great
project.”

He said he has a cousin, whom he has a close relationship
with, who is in the prison system, and Berges said they communicate using
similar systems.

“I know from his standpoint, to be able to talk to friends and
family a little bit more freely is tremendously supportive,” Berges said.

Braun said the jail will also offer, if allowed through the
USD 489 school district, the opportunity for inmates to obtain their GED. They
previously had an inmate finish their GED while in the Ellis County Jail.

The biggest upfront cost to implement the system will be the
infrastructure which will cost $7,090. There will also be upfront costs for an increase
in the jail’s internet service along with the cost to lease the tablets. 

But Braun told the commission they project the revenue will
be $37 a month per inmate or $2,550 per month. That does not
include additional revenue from movies and other options offered on the phone. Braun
said that is a very conservative estimate.

They estimate a total of $38,000 would go into the inmate
fund each year, and it would take two months to cover the upfront
costs. 

“That entire infrastructure, the implementation of tablets
is truly funded from the inmates, and it costs the taxpayers of Ellis County
not one cent,” Braun said.

Participants in high school sports and performing arts are under tremendous pressure these days – from parents, teachers, coaches and peers. Their days are consumed with school, sports and activities. Teenagers are “seen” a lot on social media, but are they seen for who they truly are? Be the person who wants to know and support the&nbsp;real&nbsp;them.&nbsp; Get to know students for who they are, not just what they do.

Create a culture where&nbsp;everyone&nbsp;is looking out for each other.

It is not one person’s responsibility to check in on every student’s mental well-being. We can&nbsp;all&nbsp;play a part in noticing, acknowledging and offering support to one another.

Remember your influence is greater than you often realize.

Far beyond students’ academic or athletic potential, you can make a difference in their lives by paying attention to their behavior and who they are as people.&nbsp;

Free drive-thru flu shots in WaKeeney Oct. 18

LOGAN COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 9:30p.m. Tuesday in Logan County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2009 Chevy Silverado driven by&nbsp;Nolin J.&nbsp;Kuhlman, 18, Oakley, was&nbsp; southbound at&nbsp;2704 U.S. 83 Highway in Oakley. The pickup rear-ended a southbound 2019 Chevy Silverado driven by Julie S.&nbsp; Maurath, 58, Oakley, who was turning into a driveway.

EMS transported Kuhlman to the Logan County Hospital for treatment of a serious injury. Maurath was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Classes are held in the Hansen Museum Community Room, Logan, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with an hour-long lunch break each day.&nbsp;

The Bob Ross method is designed to be a fun and simple way to paint. Seamone learned from the happy tree guy himself. Implementing the soft-spoken, supportive ways of her mentor, Seamone creates a classroom with a relaxing and light-hearted atmosphere. 

All painting supplies are provided, and no previous experience is necessary. Young and old alike will enjoy the camaraderie of these classes. Students need only bring a roll of paper towels.&nbsp;

Tuesday Oct. 10 Cash Grab winners; you can win too

The Russell County Sheriff's Office reported today that it is still searching for a man who reportedly fell out of a boat at Wilson Lake on Sunday.

At 4:04 p.m. Oct. 8, a female called Russell County 911 Dispatch to report that a man had fallen off a boat at Wilson Lake.

Dispatch learned that the man and woman had been boating toward the west end of Wilson Lake when the male occupant fell out of the boat and possibly struck his head on the boat as he fell.

Emergency crews were notified of the situation and units responded from the Russell County Sheriff’s Office along with units from the Kansas Highway Patrol, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Russell County EMS, and multiple rural fire agencies.

This incident is being investigated by the Russell County Sheriff’s Office with the assistance of the previously mentioned state and local agencies. This is still an active search and investigation as of this afternoon.

Crews still searching for man who fell out of boat at Wilson Lake

GREAT BEND — Barton Community College’s annual literary publication, “Prairie Ink”, has begun accepting entries for its 15th edition.&nbsp;

Editor Scott McDonald said the aim of the publication is to provide a venue for local authors and artists to showcase their talents.

The editors are looking for the following types of original work to be considered for publication: fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, drama, graphic short stories, biographies, photography, painting, digital art, pictures of 3D art, and sketches. 

Submissions will be accepted through Nov. 26 with submissions after that considered for the following edition.

Barton students, alumni, and all residents of the seven counties in Barton’s service region: Barton, Pawnee, Rush, Russell, Rice, Stafford and Ellsworth counties, as well as Barton’s Fort Riley, Fort Leavenworth, and Grandview Plaza campuses are encouraged to submit entries.

 </figure>BCCGREAT BEND — Barton Community College’s annual literary publication, “Prairie Ink”, has begun accepting entries for its 15th edition.&nbsp;Editor Scott McDonald said the aim of the publication is to provide a venue for local authors and artists to showcase their talents.The editors are looking for the following types of original work to be considered for publication: fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, drama, graphic short stories, biographies, photography, painting, digital art, pictures of 3D art, and sketches. Submissions will be accepted through Nov. 26 with submissions after that considered for the following edition.Barton students, alumni, and all residents of the seven counties in Barton’s service region: Barton, Pawnee, Rush, Russell, Rice, Stafford and Ellsworth counties, as well as Barton’s Fort Riley, Fort Leavenworth, and Grandview Plaza campuses are encouraged to submit entries.Submission guidelines and other information can be found at&nbsp;<a href="https://prairieink.bartonccc.edu/">prairieink.bartonccc.edu</a>.

TOPEKA&nbsp;– Governor Laura Kelly announced that more than $6.2 million from the Local Safety and Security Equipment grant program was awarded to 72 Kansas law enforcement, fire, emergency medical services, and 911 communications agencies. The grant funds are received through the Strengthening People Revitalizing Kansas program funded by the federal American Rescue Plan.&nbsp;

“It is critical that our first responders have the equipment necessary to protect and serve Kansans when an emergency arises,” Kelly said. “This funding will ensure agencies across the state have the resources needed to quickly and successfully deliver aid.”

The purpose of the grant program is to improve the accessibility and efficiency of emergency services to Kansans. The funding provides equipment upgrades critical to emergency response; supports updated interoperability communications systems; and updates and replaces unsafe, damaged wildland firefighting equipment that meets national standards.&nbsp;

A total of $6,208,299 was awarded to the agencies, including:&nbsp;
