TOPEKA — Vehicle-deer crashes can happen any day of the year on Kansas roadways. Across the state, 37% of all single-vehicle crashes in 2022 involved a collision with a deer. The Kansas Department of Transportation reports six people were killed and 575 people were injured in collisions with deer in 2022.

These crashes greatly increase from now until the end of the year because of deer breeding season, with November typically the peak time.

This is why KDOT, the Kansas Highway Patrol, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, AAA Kansas and the Kansas Turnpike Authority are joining to raise awareness and help decrease vehicle-deer crashes.

“If a deer enters the roadway in front of your car, it is best to hit the animal and not swerve to avoid it,” said KHP Captain Candice Breshears. “We find more serious crashes occur when you swerve to miss the deer, potentially losing control of your vehicle, leaving the road or veering into oncoming traffic.”

Roadway safety officials suggest drivers:

• Be alert and reduce speeds near wooded areas or green spaces and near water sources such as streams and ponds.

• Deer crossing signs show areas where high numbers of vehicle-deer collisions have occurred in the past; but they can happen on any roadway, including city streets.

• &nbsp;Do not swerve to avoid hitting a deer. Motorists could then veer into oncoming traffic, run off the road, hit objects or overturn.

 •&nbsp; Use bright headlights when there is no oncoming traffic and scan for the reflective eyes of deer.

• &nbsp;If a collision occurs, move the vehicle to the roadway’s shoulder. Then, if possible, call law enforcement – KHP dispatch at *47, the Kansas Turnpike at *KTA or local law enforcement at 911.

•&nbsp; Put the vehicle’s hazard lights on, whether it is light or dark outside.

•&nbsp; Remain in the vehicle with your seat belt fastened to be better protected.

•&nbsp; Contact your insurance company to report any vehicle damage.

Shawn Steward, public and government affairs manager for AAA Kansas, said deer can be unpredictable, so even the best drivers are at risk.

“In addition to the inconvenience of your vehicle damage, the cost of repairs may put a serious dent in your wallet,” Steward said. “AAA insurance statistics indicate that the average claim in Kansas for an animal strike in 2022 was almost $7,000 – up more than 60% in just five years.”

Anyone involved in a collision with a deer or other animal resulting in personal injury or property damage totaling $1,000 or more is required to immediately report the incident to the nearest law enforcement agency.

Nadia Marji, chief of public affairs and engagement officer for KDWP, said a common question to the agency is if a hunting license is needed to personally take a deer carcass from a crash scene.

“KDWP has a process in place for this through salvage tags,” Marji said. “A salvage tag is required to remove all or part of a deer carcass from an accident site and can be issued by a KDWP game warden, KHP trooper or sheriff’s deputy.”&nbsp;

Increase roadway safety this fall and throughout the year by staying alert, obeying posted laws and eliminating distractions while driving. Always wear a seat belt and use appropriate child safety seats, every trip, every time.

Motorists encouraged to be on the lookout for deer

PLAINVILLE — Congratulations to Jessie Tien, the occupational therapist at Rooks County Health Center, on being selected as a NextGen Under 30 awardee in the healthcare category.

NextGen Under 30 “recognizes and encourages the next generation of innovative, creative, and inspiring individuals who push the boundaries in demonstrating talent, drive and service to their communities.” Award winners are selected based upon their participation in and contribution to their communities. A panel of respected business and civic leaders serve as judges.

Recently, Tien had the opportunity to join other exceptional winners on a “Day at the Capitol” in Topeka, where she met with Lieutenant Governor David Toland and retired Kansas State Senator Tom Hawk, who were among those highlighting her achievements. She will formally be presented the award on October 20 at a special dinner ceremony in Wichita.

Asked to comment on the award, Tien said, “I am honored to be recognized as one of the exceptional young leaders of Kansas and strive to increase access to specialty therapy services offered in western Kansas. I am incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to continue employment at RCH while completing a virtual hand therapy fellowship to help me achieve these goals.”

Tien was born in Hays but is now a Plainville resident along with her husband Brady and their one-year-old daughter Charlotte.

Rooks County Health Center occupational therapist receives statewide award

In less than a decade, there has been a shift in land ownership trends in Kansas.

“There is a growing demographic of landowners in Kansas that are becoming more geographically and generationally removed from agriculture,” said Robin Reid, an agricultural economist at Kansas State University.

Reid cites data from 2015 indicating that 85% of Kansas land was owned by people living in the state. Research is ongoing, she says, but in 2022, data suggests a notable shift in land being owned by people who live outside the state’s borders.

“Some of that is due to inheritance and some of that is due to people purchasing land – especially hunting ground,” Reid said. “But we also know the No. 1 question in our county extension offices across the state is from landowners wanting to know the going rates for land leases and information on Kansas lease law.” Reid said K-State is hosting the first-ever Kansas Landowner Conference on Nov. 10 to address challenges related to land ownership in Kansas. She notes that in addition to helping landowners build networks and learn about land management, the program includes information on:

· Agricultural land market conditions · Land lease management · Property tax regulations

“There is so much that we want to emphasize about having a good relationship between a landowner and their tenant,” Reid said. “Open communication and getting a lease in writing will help to streamline the process of managing a land lease and avoiding conflict.”

Ashlee Westerhold, director of the Office of Farm and Ranch Transition in K-State’s Department of Agricultural Economics, will also be presenting during the conference. She said that 2 in 3 – 66% - Kansas farms are owned and operated by someone age 55 or older.

“So, if you think about that,” she said, “in the next 15 years as landowners head towards 70 years old, they will be retiring or thinking about transferring land. We’re going to see a huge wave of ownership transfer from one generation to the next.”

In her current role, Westerhold said she works with many families who are inheriting farmland while living in Kansas City, Wichita or other large cities.

“They do not necessarily have plans to come back to the farm, but they want to keep ownership,” she said. “And it’s important to have conversations about transition and succession even though these children might not live on the farm someday. We’re helping them become better landowners once they inherit the farm.”

WAKEENEY — The Smoky Hill Trail Annual Conference is just around the corner on October 20, 21, and 22.&nbsp; The conference will be held at the Trego County Historical Society Museum, 128 N. 13th Street, WaKeeney. 

On Friday, October 20, there will be a bus tour of Trego County beginning at 1:00 pm. A “meet and greet” will follow at the Commercial Building at the Trego County Fairgrounds, 13th and Russell Avenue, WaKeeney, at 4:00 pm.

Saturday, October 21, will feature speakers throughout the day, beginning at 8:30 am. The speakers and their topics include: "A Window into Time," by Garrett Seuser; "The Cartographic Roots of Colorado," by Wes Brown; "The French on the Smoky Hill in the 18th Century,” by Wade Davis; "Railroaded: The Industry that Shaped Kansas," by Leo Oliva; and "Silas Stillman Soule: From Coal Creek to Sand Creek," by Byron Strom.

The evening features a banquet at 6:00 p.m. with special speaker, Chris Herriage, discussing “Today’s Archaeology, Tomorrow’s Trails.”

Sunday, October 22, begins with coffee at 8:30 a.m. and features two more speakers beginning at 9:00 a.m. Don Rowlinson will discuss “The History of Trego County Agriculture: Before and After the Sod Busters” and Wade Davis will discuss "Smoky Hill Thompson: A Life Wild and Perilous." 

The conference will close by 12:00 noon on Sunday.

The Hays High Indians are on the road Friday night with a
shot at the Western Athletic Conference title as they take on the Liberal
Redskins.

The Indians are coming off win over Dodge City, their second
straight victory, to improve to 4-2 and they are 2-1 in the WAC.

Liberal enters the contest a perfect 6-0 and they are 3-0 in
the WAC after a win over Great Bend last week.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Lewis Field in Hays. Live

This is the 47th meeting between Hays and Liberal. Liberal
leads the series 27-19 despite the Indians wining 13 of the last 14 games and
each of the last six. Prior to the 2009 season Liberal dominated the series
winning 26 of 32 games. 

The two played a single game in 1973 with Hays winning
34-30. Liberal won each game played from 1977 through 1980 before a two-year
break was taken. The two started playing every year in 1983. The Indians only
wins from that 1983 season through 2008 came in 1986 and 1987…1990…2001…and
2006. In the Indians run of winning 13 of 14 beginning in 2009 the games have
been solidly in favor of Hays. Only three of the 13 wins by Hays have been by
one score. 

The 47th game in the series puts it three behind the 50
plays against TMP/St. Joes, a series that has not been played since 1986. Hays
owns a 30-19-1 advantage over the Monarchs.

PAWNEE COUNTY—A Kansas man accused of burglary and numerous other crimes following a traffic stop last week made his first court appearance in the case on Tuesday.

Payton L. Klaus, 23, Hays, is charged with endangering a child; furnishing alcohol to a minor; possession of a firearm while under the Influence; driving under the influence of alcohol; transporting an open alcoholic container; and failing to use a turn signal, according to Pawnee County Attorney Doug McNett.

During a police traffic stop on Oct. 5,&nbsp; Klaus had a teenage boy in the vehicle with him. In addition to the traffic stop, the Pawnee County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a burglary of a Larned Township Building in which a firearm was stolen sometime during the night of Oct. 4-5. The missing firearm matched an item retrieved from the Klaus vehicle incident to his arrest. 

A search warrant was then secured to search a location for additional items. Throughout the day on Oct. 5, the Pawnee County Sheriff’s Department and Larned Police Department received multiple reports of possible burglaries and thefts. Those investigations remain ongoing.

In connection with the burglaries, Klaus is also charged with two counts of burglary of non-dwellings, two counts of felony theft of firearms, felony criminal damage of property, misdemeanor theft, and misdemeanor criminal damage to property, according to McNett.

Klaus is being held in the custody of the Pawnee County Sheriff on a $15,000 bond. A juvenile has also been charged in connection with the ongoing burglary/theft investigations.

These young people’s stories are incredible. Applications reveal some students who don’t have parents in their daily lives, and those who are being raised by other families. It is very challenging to be successful in high school when you don't have family support. It takes an exceptional young person to take on responsibilities like working to support their younger siblings when there is no other option.

“To have that kind of fortitude just to get through high school is extraordinary – and these students do so while achieving a high grade point average,” shared Gary Shorman, president of the Schmidt Foundation. “They are very smart. They're articulate. They have goals in the world that they want to accomplish. We want to lift them up and give them a stronger chance to achieve their dreams.”

The dedication of the selection committee, led by Jessica Albin, in finding deserving and resilient students is genuinely commendable. Their commitment to choosing academically strong individuals who exhibit leadership skills and possess the potential to make valuable contributions is pivotal in ensuring the program's success.

“We look for academically strong students who we are confident can succeed at the university level and will embrace the mentoring opportunities included in the Schmidt Foundation Scholars program,” Jessica said. “We are looking for students who demonstrate clear leadership skills and who we believe will make valuable contributions to our university, the community of Hays, and the state of Kansas.”

She went on to say that there is research that describes how purpose within our work, rather than passion or even happiness, is the best predictor of resilience and longevity in the workplace.

“There will always be mundane aspects of our jobs; we may not feel “passionate” about every single responsibility we have. But if we know that our work really matters because it changes lives, we are more likely to stick out those hard days. It is a blessing to be part of this committee because it is without question purposeful and life-changing,” Jessica said.

Indeed, this program is changing lives while shaping the university and the communities we serve.

Bianca Bultman is in her third year at FHSU and is a member of the first class of Schmidt Foundation Scholars. Bianca grew up in Elkhart, Kansas. She is a junior majoring in nursing with dreams of becoming a labor and delivery nurse.

“I knew that Fort Hays State University had the best nursing program. Since I wanted to be the best possible nurse for my patients, I wanted to attend the FHSU,” Bianca said.

Bianca worked tirelessly to save money for college, knowing that loans would be necessary. Her mother’s encouragement and the Schmidt Foundation Scholars program gave her hope and the opportunity to change her life.

“Knowing that I could go to college and have a chance to change my family’s life is the greatest gift,” she said. “Because of this scholarship, I can continue my education and show my sisters that it is possible even when the odds are against us.”

Josey Dove's story is another testament to the transformative power of education. She is a sophomore from Ozawkie, Kansas, majoring in music with a minor in psychology. Josey’s dream is to become a music therapist.

Growing up, her dad had constantly told her how important education was. Her dad dropped out of high school. Later, he earned his GED. He always stressed to Josey that she had so much potential. She just had to be willing to work hard. He challenged her to build a better life than he did.

Her father's belief in her potential and hard work paid off when she received this scholarship.

Edwin Garcia-Arreola is a junior from Lakin, Kansas, majoring in corporate communications and translating and interpreting in Spanish. He is actively involved in the Dane G. Hansen Scholarship Hall community and the Spanish Club. These involvements align with his interests and provide opportunities for personal and professional growth.

The Schmidt Foundation Scholarship has relieved him of financial burdens and provided a supportive community. This scholarship has opened doors to networking opportunities, mentoring relationships, and friendships that he believes will extend beyond his college years. Edwin's family is incredibly proud, and the scholarship has alleviated their concerns regarding his education.

Edwin encourages new students to be confident in seeking guidance and support from upperclassmen and mentors and to be proactive in taking advantage of all the opportunities the scholarship offers, including etiquette training and networking events.

He highlights the importance of believing in oneself and recognizing one’s potential to make a difference. He underscores that although this scholarship is an outstanding achievement, utilizing the services provided by FHSU at the Fischli-Wills Center for Student Success can be a game-changer for students as they navigate their college journey and transition into young adulthood.

Perhaps renowned actor and philanthropist Denzel Washington captured the essence of the Schmidt Foundation Scholars program when he said, “At the end of the day, it is not about what you have or even what you’ve accomplished… It’s about who you’ve lifted up, who you’ve made better. It’s about what you’ve given back.”

Weight loss solutions program offered by HaysMed for 2024

Options Domestic and Sexual Violence Services celebrated its 40th anniversary during a ceremony Friday in downtown Hays.

The ceremony included a prayer, reading of a proclamation by Hays Mayor Shaun Musil, a tree-lighting and unveiling of a commemorative quilt.

Options began with a group of volunteers from Goodland, Colby and Hays who were trying to rescue women from abusive relationships, often taking them into their own homes.

In 1983, volunteers from those three communities joined to form the Northwest Kansas Shelter, which is now Options.

"For 40 years now, we've been growing," Meagan Zampieri-Lillpopp, director of client services, said on the Post Podcast. "The more people seem to find out about us, the more we seem to be needed, which is frankly horrible and I don't really like that.

"I would like us to get so big that we work ourselves out of a job."

The celebration coincided with the annual Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

"Domestic Violence Awareness Month is about making the rest of the world a little bit safer for people who might not realize they're being abused, who might not have any examples of healthy relationships to see and who may not think they have anyone to turn to,"&nbsp;Zampieri-Lillpopp said.

Options is encouraging people to light purple light bulbs in their homes, put an Options sign in their yard or wear purple during the month of October.

Zampieri-Lillpopp said this lets people who are experiencing relationship violence know you are a safe person they can turn to.

Allies can refer domestic violence victims to Options, which can help victims with safety planning and hopefully help them find a way out,&nbsp;Zampieri-Lillpopp said.

You can walk into an Options office at 2716 Plaza, Hays, or&nbsp;1480 W. Fourth, Colby.&nbsp; You can call Options 24-hour helpline at 1-800-794-4624 or text HOPE to 847411.

🎙 Options honors 40 years of assisting domestic violence victims

CEDAR BLUFF RESERVOIR&nbsp; – Western Cooperative Electric, a committed partner in community development, is thrilled to award a Sharing Success grant to Project Dream, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing transformative summer camps for children of addicted families. Western Cooperative Electric has generously awarded a $5,000 community grant to support the completion of a much-needed playground expansion at the Dream Camp facility.

Since its inception in 1988, Dream, Inc. has been on a mission to provide healing and hope to children aged 7-11 who have family members struggling with substance use disorders. It is estimated that in Kansas alone, 140,800 children live in environments where a parent or caregiver faces addiction-related challenges. These children are at a higher risk of developing substance abuse issues themselves, making Dream Camps a crucial method of intervention.

The Dream Camps program, founded by Sheryl Butler and Glenda Kramer, both veterans in the substance abuse field with a combined 87 years of experience, offers these children a lifeline. Through education about addiction, emotional support, and the cultivation of self-worth, Dream Camps empower participants to break the cycle of addiction within their families.

In 1994, Dream, Inc. took a remarkable step by "rescuing" an abandoned camp facility on the north shore of Cedar Bluff Reservoir. This facility, abandoned for approximately three decades and scheduled for demolition, found a new purpose through Dream, Inc.'s dedication. The journey of transformation began after securing an ongoing lease for as long as Dream, Inc. exists of the property of the State of Kansas.

Over the years, Dream, Inc. has invested in renovating the main building, which serves as the hub for education and houses a large kitchen. The dormitory area for girls in the walk-out basement was also revamped. To further enhance the camp experience, Dream, Inc. constructed a separate bunkhouse for boys and built a picnic shelter complete with an attached basketball court.

This summer marks the 34th year of Dream Camps, and the impact on the children has been nothing short of remarkable. Evaluation results show significant progress in the children's understanding of addiction and improved coping mechanisms. One referring therapist even described the camps as providing "a year of therapy in one week."

Western Cooperative Electric is delighted to join hands with Dream, Inc. to complete the dream of a playground expansion at the campgrounds. Dream, Inc. can start work on the project thanks

to the $5,000 grant from Western Cooperative Electric. A significant portion of the funds, $3,200, is allocated for necessary dirt work due to the challenging terrain. An additional $800 will cover the cost of the required sand, and $1,000 will allow for the addition of more swings to accommodate more children simultaneously.

The check presentation ceremony took place on September 14 at the Dream Camps facility at the camp. "This collaboration not only reflects Western Cooperative Electric's commitment to community well-being but also embodies the spirit of giving and support that makes a profound difference in the lives of children and families." Said Western Cooperative Assistant General Manager Nolan Numrich. "Western Cooperative Electric is proud to be part of Dream, Inc.'s journey to create lasting positive change in the lives of these children."

Western Cooperative Electric awards Sharing Success grant to Project Dream

Every year in October, Jana’s Campaign joins with allies and supporters across the country to recognize and educate others about Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

 It evolved from the “Day of Unity” in October 1981 observed by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The intent was to connect advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children. 

Now in its 42nd year, individuals and communities across our nation join together to raise awareness of domestic violence, take action to advocate for change, intervene to stop acts of domestic violence, and support those who are impacted. 

The theme for this year, #Every1KnowsSome1, was developed collaboratively by the National Network to End Domestic Violence and the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Its aim is to emphasize the widespread nature of domestic violence, and its effects on many individuals. 

Nationally, 1 in 4 women and 1 in 10 men, have experienced domestic violence by an intimate partner or ex-intimate partner (CDC, 2020). From reports submitted to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), 35 lives were lost due to domestic violence in 2022. 

Domestic violence occurs in many forms- verbal, emotional, psychological, digital, sexual, and/or physical abuse. It can be extreme jealousy, possessiveness, unwanted touching, coercion, and excessive arguments. It is about power and control. Domestic violence can happen to anyone regardless of age, race or ethnicity, religion, employment or educational level, marital status, physical ability, sex, gender identity, or sexual orientation. 

To prevent domestic violence, it's essential that each of us plays a role. An initial step that #Every1 can engage in is educating themselves and spreading awareness. 

This can involve organizing awareness events featuring purple ribbons and Silent Witness displays, as well as participating in nationally scheduled events. 

We invite you to take note of October 19, designated as Purple Thursday, and actively participate in discussions and activities related to these events, whether online or in person. 

To do our part, Jana’s Campaign will post facts and statistics about domestic violence on our social media platforms throughout October. 

On Monday, October 16, we will host a Facebook Live covering the topic, its impacts, and share resources. 

Additionally, Jana’s Campaign will host our annual fundraising event, Empty Place at the Table, on October 7, in Hays. 

This event serves as a tribute to individuals who tragically lost their lives to domestic violence, including Jana Mackey, whose life-and-death inspired the establishment of Jana's Campaign. At the event, a symbolic table is set, featuring an empty seat and dinner setting. This poignant arrangement symbolizes the void left by Jana's death and the many other deaths caused by domestic violence, a void that resonates at tables worldwide.

Its aim is to emphasize the widespread nature of domestic violence, and its effects on many individuals. Nationally, 1 in 4 women and 1 in 10 men, have experienced domestic violence by an intimate partner or ex-intimate partner (CDC, 2020). From reports submitted to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), 35 lives were lost due to domestic violence in 2022. Domestic violence occurs in many forms- verbal, emotional, psychological, digital, sexual, and/or physical abuse. It can be extreme jealousy, possessiveness, unwanted touching, coercion, and excessive arguments. It is about power and control. Domestic violence can happen to anyone regardless of age, race or ethnicity, religion, employment or educational level, marital status, physical ability, sex, gender identity, or sexual orientation. To prevent domestic violence, it's essential that each of us plays a role. An initial step that #Every1 can engage in is educating themselves and spreading awareness. This can involve organizing awareness events featuring purple ribbons and Silent Witness displays, as well as participating in nationally scheduled events. We invite you to take note of October 19, designated as Purple Thursday, and actively participate in discussions and activities related to these events, whether online or in person. To do our part, Jana’s Campaign will post facts and statistics about domestic violence on our social media platforms throughout October. On Monday, October 16, we will host a Facebook Live covering the topic, its impacts, and share resources. Additionally, Jana’s Campaign will host our annual fundraising event, Empty Place at the Table, on October 7, in Hays. This event serves as a tribute to individuals who tragically lost their lives to domestic violence, including Jana Mackey, whose life-and-death inspired the establishment of Jana's Campaign. At the event, a symbolic table is set, featuring an empty seat and dinner setting. This poignant arrangement symbolizes the void left by Jana's death and the many other deaths caused by domestic violence, a void that resonates at tables worldwide. Join us in spreading the word that 1 isn’t just a number, it’s #Some1 - a family member, a neighbor, a coworker, a friend.
