The TMP-Marian Monarchs make their 12th state tournament appearance Thursday afternoon as they take on Inman in the first round of the 2-1 state softball tournament in Pratt.

The Monarchs qualified for the state tournament by winning the Sylvan Grove Regional and are 21-8 on the season.&nbsp;

As the No. 5 seed they take on No. 4 seed Inman in the first round.

Inman won the Sedgwick Regional and are 17-4.

First pitch of the first game is set for 1:00 p.m. from Green Sports Complex in Pratt on the Monarchs Sports Network.

Multiple cyberattacks have hit Kansas in recent weeks.&nbsp;

The <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/6dfb291d-3533-4db7-b901-e54ca761719">City of Wichita</a> and <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/8f5ab8b5-0dba-404d-95ce-f3b305af707e">Via Christi Hospital in Wichita</a> were affected, and <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/4688fc8f-5406-4760-b5d0-04d3877a55fc">Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital</a> announced Tuesday it was the subject of a ransomware attack.

Dallas Haselhorst, owner of TreeTop Security in Hays, discussed cyber threats and prevention on Thursday on Eagle Radio's Morning Blend show.

Haselhorst said everyone is vulnerable to cyberattacks.

"It's definitely one of those things that now that technology has become so ubiquitous to everything we do that if you are connected to the internet, in any way, shape, or form, there's a good chance that you could be attacked in some way, shape or form," Haselhorst said.

Haselhorst said hackers are not just after big companies and government agencies.

"We have done [incident responses] for billion dollar companies that are multinational. The smallest response we did was a local business here that had a total of four computers," he said. "It can absolutely affect anyone."

Haselhorst said prevention is the best action.

"I always tell people if you want to be secure, you should have started six months ago," he said, "because it's not an overnight thing even in small environments and businesses we work with. It can take a few months to get them more secure — there's no such thing as 100 percent."

He suggested working with a company that can offer comprehensive services and is not just a reseller of hardware, firewalls and software.

He said to look for frameworks and best practices developed by the National Institute of Standards in Technology or the Center for Internet Security.

"You have a burglar that could go through a 20-foot brick wall, or they could go to the house that has an unlocked door. Which one are they going to do?" Haselhorst said. "They are going to do the unlocked door every single time, regardless of what's inside."

"You need to get your doors all locked and do some basic security measures so the attacker bangs on the door enough and decides it's not worth it and goes to the next one that's a lot easier," he said.

Some basics of securing medical data or energy systems are the same for small companies with sales data.

Although security measures can be expensive, much of what TreeTop does also brings businesses into compliance with regulations.

If a business that accepts credit cards or digital payments is breached, it is liable for any data that might be compromised, Haselhorst said.

"You are basically out of business because you will fined out of business," he said.

Sometimes, cyber security comes down to people.

"If I'm an attacker, why would I go through all of these hoops if I could simply call up Cristina and act like I'm the IT help desk?" Haslehorst said. "'Hey, Cristina, it looks like you got locked out of your account. I can help with that. What's your old password?'"

Unfortunately, Haselhorst said often those tactics work.

"Your people can be the weakest link," he said. "Your people can also be the strongest link."

TreeTop offers free cybersecurity training.

If a hacker makes it past all of the technical barriers, but an employee is adequately trained to recognize phishing attempts, they can stop the hacker, Haselhorst said.

Haselhorst described a phishing attack in which a hacker posed as someone high in a company. A hacker sent 73 emails within 30 minutes, but several employees alerted cybersecurity of the emails.&nbsp;

Those emails were blocked and labeled as missed attacks, which helped train the AI security program, and the emails were removed from users' accounts.

As a user or consumer, there's not much you can do if an entity you do business with has been attacked, Haslehorst said.

However, if you are a business, he recommends cutting digital ties with the affected business or entity. He said he helped some companies do this when the Kansas court system was a cyberattack victim.

Businesses can also limit access to networks and data without completely cutting ties.

If an affected business or entity offers you free ID protection or credit monitoring, Haselhorst said it can help in some regards, but your information is already out there.

He did not suggest buying ID theft protection/credit monitoring.

"It's a running joke among cybersecurity professions, don't buy credit monitoring because your next free year is right around the corner because there's going to be another breech from someone," he said.

"Unfortunately, that's the world we live in that your data is all over the place. Once that cat's out of the bag, it's really hard to put it back in," Haselhorst said.

He suggested watching credit reports and card transactions and signing up for transaction alerts.

He also recommends having regular discussions with your spouse or anyone else on your bank or credit card about charges so you can better track transactions and spot fraud.

THOMAS COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 8p.m. Wednesday in Thomas County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2010 Chevy pickup driven by&nbsp; Eric Wayne&nbsp;Chronsiter, 33,&nbsp;Heavener, Oklahoma, was eastbound on Interstate 70 just west of the K184 Brewster exit.

The pickup traveled into the south ditch, returned to the eastbound lanes of the highway, crossed the median into the westbound lanes and rolled&nbsp; into the north ditch.

EMS transported Chronsiter to Citizens Medical Center. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

WAKEENEY—Ernie Brown will be inducted into the Kansas Teachers Hall of Fame this summer along with seven other members of the Class of 2024.

The class will be inducted at a luncheon in their honor, followed by the induction ceremony on Saturday, June 1 at the Dodge City Civic Center located at 2112 First Ave.

Brown began his teaching career in the fall of 1966 at Gorham Rural High School in Gorham, where he taught all of the science classes and assisted in coaching four sports until 1969.

After completing his Master of Natural Science degree at the University of South Dakota in 1970, he returned to Kansas to accept a teaching position at Trego Community High School in WaKeeney where he taught biology, advanced biology and anatomy and physiology until his retirement in 2005.

In addition, he taught “Methods of Teaching Biology #502” at Fort Hays State University to students who were prospective high school science teachers from 1988 to 1998.

Brown has received numerous awards, honors and recognitions during his 39-year teaching career. He has received the Christa McAuliffe Memorial Fellowship Award, the Kansas Master Teacher Award from Emporia State University, the University of Kansas Outstanding Teacher and Mentor Recognition Award, and the National Association of Biology Teachers Outstanding Biology Teacher Award for the State of Kansas.

	In 1977, the first state hall of fame for teachers was established in Dodge City.

Since its inception, more than 450 exemplary educators have been inducted into the Kansas Teachers Hall of Fame.&nbsp; Each year, nominations are accepted from each of the 12 districts in Kansas.

The state selection committee meets in March to review the candidates and complete the selection process.&nbsp; The inductees must meet the highest of standards, including evidence of outstanding teaching, evidence of positive interactions with students and parents, qualities that set him/her apart from other educators, the continued pursuit of educational opportunities throughout their career, a willingness to share ideas by conducting workshops, classes, etc. for parents, teachers, and involvement in community activities: educational recognition and awards: and a philosophy of education that is a positive example for others.

Additionally, nominees must have been a K-12 teacher for a minimum of 25 years in Kansas.

WaKeeney teacher to be inducted into Kansas Teachers Hall of Fame

Walking into a garden center invites a flood of memory. Just turning in the driveway works like Pavlov’s Bell for convicted gardeners. Scents of soil, spicy petunias, heirloom roses, and dozens of other flowers trigger thoughts of grandma gardens and long ago visits to loved ones now passed. A trip down the vegetable aisle adds dozens more flashbacks to harvests of yore and hours of satisfying canning and jelly making. Who’da thunk a metal yard art peacock near the entry would overwhelm those other childhood remembrances.

I’d stopped for strawberry plants, so imagine my surprise to find myself loading a 2 1/2 foot tall, brilliantly colored metal peacock into the back seat of our Toyota. Luck was with me because it was half price, and once my eyes landed on it, I needed it. From first glance, sounds and sights of peacocks pee-yaaaahing and strutting at Meade Lake during childhood visits inundated my mind.

As youngsters, my cousins and I looked forward to summer visits to our grandparents in Meade. From the moment we entered their home, we couldn’t wait for Grandpa to impersonate that high-pitched, drawn-out wild call. He’d done it so often he sounded exactly like a peacock. Upon hearing that plaintive screech, requests to head to the lake escalated.

As a bonus, Grandma turned it into a festive picnic. Her fried chicken and best-ever potato salad tucked into an old-fashioned wicker basket along with other necessities heightened our anticipation. Grandpa tossed a blanket in the trunk in case other families had claimed tables in the picnic area where the flock of peacocks, peahens, and pea babies roamed near an artesian spring bubbling from deep in the earth.

Once we arrived, our grandparents turned us loose to seek brilliant-colored tail feathers male peacocks lost when they spread and rattled them in a courtship dance as old as time. Though it was past the usual breeding season of these exotic birds, those fellas still fanned their iridescent turquoise, emerald green, bronze, and electric blue tails sporting imbedded eyes. Ironically, as is often the case in nature, the females appeared drab compared to the males

As we scampered about grounds shaded by century-old, towering cottonwoods gleefully waving fists full of bright feathers, Grandpa encouraged the peacocks to respond to his realistic pee-yaaaaah! To our delight, at least one always answered.

From my current grandma perspective, I’m certain my grandparents looked forward to this excuse to change up schedules so they could haul grands to this far southwest Kansas oasis. The lake, the WPA era bathhouse, the winding trail to the artesian spring, groves of century-old cottonwoods, and those fanciful, out of place peacocks offered welcome respite from the daily grind of running a dime store on hot summer days.

For us, it formed life-long memories, even though those recollections hid until I spied that bright lawn ornament at a local garden store. Now, that peacock sits in my flower bed to remind me daily of precious times with loved ones.

🎙 Post Podcast: Downtown Farmers Market kicks off May 25

Incentive requests for a couple of projects through the city of Hays' economic development program will be considered on Thursday.

Vernie's Trux-N-Equip. plans to construct a new shop and office north of Interstate 70 on six acres northwest of the intersection of 48th Street and General Hays Road at 4885 Vine. It's the site of the former Hays Livestock sales barn.

The owners are requesting the establishment of a commercial improvement district with a 2% sales tax and the issuance of industrial revenue bonds. 

It's estimated the CID sales tax will generate $1 million during the maximum 22-year term.&nbsp;IRBs would allow a sales tax exemption for purchases related to the construction of the $2.6 million project. 

Commissioners will consider two resolutions for those requests.&nbsp;

The second project at 1108 N. Main in downtown Hays involves redeveloping the existing building into a new luxury short-term rental Airbnb called Chestnut Suites. The building was constructed in 1965 and has been vacant for 40 years.

Chestnut Suites is pursuing a $300,000 community development block grant through the Kansas Department of Commerce.&nbsp;

The city of Hays must be the official applicant for the CDBG funds, although developer Adam Pray will own and operate the project. Components of the grant application require an interlocal agreement between the city and the developer, two resolutions, and a public hearing.

No city funds would be disbursed for the $3.2 million project.

The commission will also vote on a three-year contract renewal for city attorney services with&nbsp;Dreiling, Bieker &amp; Hoffman. 

Some expenses would go up to reflect the current costs of providing city attorney and municipal prosecution services for Hays. The main change is the monthly retainer, which increases to $12,500.

 </figure>The owners are requesting the establishment of a commercial improvement district with a 2% sales tax and the issuance of industrial revenue bonds. It's estimated the CID sales tax will generate $1 million during the maximum 22-year term.&nbsp;IRBs would allow a sales tax exemption for purchases related to the construction of the $2.6 million project. No property tax abatement is requested.Commissioners will consider two resolutions for those requests.&nbsp;The second project at 1108 N. Main in downtown Hays involves redeveloping the existing building into a new luxury short-term rental Airbnb called Chestnut Suites. The building was constructed in 1965 and has been vacant for 40 years.<figure>

 </figure>Chestnut Suites is pursuing a $300,000 community development block grant through the Kansas Department of Commerce.&nbsp;The city of Hays must be the official applicant for the CDBG funds, although developer Adam Pray will own and operate the project. Components of the grant application require an interlocal agreement between the city and the developer, two resolutions, and a public hearing.No city funds would be disbursed for the $3.2 million project.The commission will also vote on a three-year contract renewal for city attorney services with&nbsp;Dreiling, Bieker &amp; Hoffman. Some expenses would go up to reflect the current costs of providing city attorney and municipal prosecution services for Hays. The main change is the monthly retainer, which increases to $12,500.

Hays City Commission to vote on economic help for development projects

The city of Russell and Russell County experienced severe weather on Sunday afternoon.

A tornado warning preceded the storm that swept through the area, causing golf ball-sized hail and 82 mph wind gusts. The storm caused significant damage to homes, businesses, vehicles and the city's electric distribution system. Three structures were completely leveled.

At 3:28 p.m. Sunday, the tornado sirens were activated in Russell, and the National Weather Service issued a warning for a confirmed tornado on the ground west of the city.

Additional reports from law enforcement and storm spotters confirmed tornadoes between Gorham and Russell moving east toward the city.

The storm's impact was extensive, resulting in widespread power outages across the city. At about 3:38 p.m., several areas lost power, followed by the rest of the service area at 4 p.m.

In response, the city activated its emergency operations plan, prioritizing life safety, property protection, public welfare and the restoration of city services.

City crews immediately began clearing streets of downed trees and other debris, restricting access to areas with downed power lines, conducting damage assessments, and working on restoring electric service and maintaining water and wastewater services.

Russell City Manager Jon Quinday reported no injuries. Electric service was restored to most of the city by midnight. However, about 116 Oakdale, Sunset, Margaret, and South Front Street customers remained without power until Monday afternoon, when the damage was repaired. 

Individual customers with property or meter box damage requiring the work of a licensed electrician will need to complete repairs before power can be restored to their properties.

The city of Russell received invaluable support through mutual aid coordinated by the Kansas Municipal Utilities. The cities of Garden City, Ellinwood, Hoisington and Pratt sent electric linemen, equipment and power poles to assist in rebuilding downed power lines and repairing damaged circuits.

The Kansas Municipal Energy Agency also contributed their Manager of Field Services — a journeyman lineman with extensive experience in electrical substations — and a lineman to support the city's efforts. The city of Colby provided power poles to expedite service restoration. This collaboration expanded the city’s resources from five linemen to seventeen.

Quinday praised the collective efforts, saying, "The response we received from these cities and [Kansas Municipal Energy Agency] is at the heart of what public power communities do and exemplifies the spirit of Kansas. I am proud of the work of all city crews and our mutual aid partners during and after Sunday’s storm. Their dedication to restoring services and returning the community to normal is at the heart of public service."

At the Tuesday city council meeting, the mayor and city council members expressed their gratitude and thanked city staff for everything they do daily in service to others, especially their exemplary response to major events such as Sunday’s storm and subsequent recovery efforts.

City crews will continue cleaning up storm damage and repairing infrastructure over the next few weeks. Starting Thursday, city crews, with assistance from the Russell County Highway Department, will begin picking up trees and tree limbs of customers who have called the city clerk’s office to get on the pickup list.

The National Weather Service of Wichita confirmed two tornado damage areas from Sunday’s storms, one northwest of Russell and the other northeast of Wilson. Both tornadoes were rated EF-1. The tornado northwest of Russell had estimated peak winds of 98 mph and a path length of 1.7 miles.

A preliminary damage assessment by city staff indicates 27 residences and 16 commercial properties received damage, ranging from multiple broken windows, damaged siding, and roofs to severe roof damage and two destroyed garages. These numbers do not include damage to public facilities — many of which were also damaged in the storm.

The National Weather Service sent a team to assess the damage within Russell to determine whether a tornado, straight-line winds or a combination caused the widespread damage throughout the community.

Russell recovers: Severe destructive storm causes widespread damage

A couple of spring thunderstorms rumbled through Hays Tuesday night into early morning Wednesday.

The official rainfall amount measured at the K-State Agricultural Center was just shy of a half-inch at 0.49 inches.

That brings the total amount of rain so far in May to&nbsp;1.83 inches. The average for all of May is 3.34 inches.

So far this year, Hays has received 5.60 inches of moisture. The 154-cumulative average is&nbsp;7.92 inches by the end of May, leaving a shortage of two and a third inches.&nbsp;

More thunderstorms bring rain to Hays; still 2 inches below normal

Beginning Tuesday, the intersection of 11th and Ash in Hays will be closed to through traffic until further notice for waterline replacements. 

Any residents affected by this project will be notified by the contractor for any interruption of services. 

Please avoid the area if possible. Traffic control devices will be placed to direct the travelling public.

11th & Ash intersection in Hays closed for waterline replacement 

After changing the bulletin boards in her room once a month for four decades, the walls of&nbsp;Teresa Schrant's classroom were finally bare last week. 

She was gathering boxes to pack her extensive collection of M&amp;M memorabilia, mostly gifts over the years. She's been in the classroom, which she is now leaving, for 24 years.

"That's longer than some people have been in their homes," she said. "It'll be strange."

Big No. 43 silver balloons were tucked into a corner along with an antique school desk that had been in her childhood basement. Sitting on that antique desk was a privilege for her fourth-grade students.

Schrant, 65, retired last week after teaching 43 years at Holy Family Elementary School.

But Schrant is leaving Holy Family entirely, she said. How could she? It's her home.

Schrant grew up blocks from Holy Family, then a public school, Jefferson Elementary. She said she didn't know there was a lunch recess until the fifth grade because she walked home every day for lunch.

Schrant said she fell into education. A Hays native, she said she didn't know what she wanted to study when she entered Fort Hays State University.

She grew up a middle child in a large family with four siblings. Her sisters and brothers played school often. Children's time was not so structured then, she said—more time was spent using one's imagination and less time in activities like dance or sports.

As she grew older, she frequently babysat and discovered her love for children. She and her husband have three boys and seven grandchildren.

After taking a few education courses at Fort Hays, she said she knew she wanted to be a teacher.

Although she was a product of public education, she applied at Holy Family and was hired the same day she was interviewed by Sister Mary Alice Walters.

That corner of Hays has always been her home. Not only did she attend school in the building now Holy Family, but she is also a long-time parishioner of Immaculate Heart of Mary, the church adjacent to the Catholic elementary school.

She said teaching in a Catholic school has helped her grow in her faith.&nbsp;

"Shirley Dinkel, who taught Catholic school for years and years, always used to talk about how she was growing little disciples, and I always love that analogy," Schrant said.

In 2020, Schrant received a stem cell transplant to treat cancer, and had to leave her classroom for two years. She said her faith was important to her during that time. 

"In the last few years, [my faith] just exploded," she said.

The treatment had to be delayed because of COVID, and she said she was frustrated because she wanted to go back to school.

"This is home to me. It's always been home to me," she said. "I went to school here. I taught school here. I still go to church here. It will always be home."

Her husband noticed that she never said she was going to work. She always said she was going to school.

"I never viewed this as work," she said. "This was always school to me. It was just something I wanted to do. I don't think there was ever a day I woke up and said, 'Ugh, we have school today."

Although Schrant is certified to teach grades K-9, she only taught two age levels during her four decades in the profession — second and fourth grades, retiring as a fourth-grade teacher.

She said she loves working with fourth graders because they can get a joke but are still eager to learn.

On her desk was a tattered copy of "James and the Giant Peach," a favorite of both her and her students. She said she didn't have the time this year to read the book to them.

During her decades as a teacher, students' lessons have become more structured, and there is less time for reading to the kids aloud, which she once did multiple times a week.

She said students are more attuned to emotions now than they were when she was a child, but she also bemoaned a loss of innocence that has come with the prevalence of social media and the rise of technology.

"I try to make school fun for them," she said.&nbsp;

She had a student in her class who didn't like to read, but he snuck a Snap-on tool catalog into the classroom. He worked in the summer, and he used the money he made to buy tools.&nbsp;

She made a deal with him that he could look at his catalog once he finished his AR reading.

When he was in high school, he came back to show her the truck he had bought.

In her retirement, Schrant said she intends to spend more time with her family. She hopes to have the freedom to travel to her grandchildren's activities now that they all live in Kansas.

She will still help with the altar servers on Tuesday and Thursday, which she has been doing for the last two years.

She hasn't ruled out the possibility of returning as a substitute teacher, and if she really can't handle being away from school, she also considered working as a paraeducator.

"I think I will miss it a ton," she said. "I'll miss the kids."

Holy Family teacher retires after 43 years

Outdoor watering restrictions in Hays will go into effect for the summer beginning Sat., June 1.

Watering of lawns and other vegetation from private wells and by city customers is prohibited between noon and seven p.m. through Sept. 30.

The Kansas Department of Agriculture's Division of Water Resources issues the order each year at the request of the City of Hays.

"By restricting outdoor water use, including the watering of landscapes and gardens, unnecessary water loss due to wind and evaporation can be reduced, thus conserving the resource for more efficient use," said Holly Dickman, water conservation specialist.

The city also prohibits wasting water&nbsp; year-round by:

• Washing down sidewalks, parking lots, and driveways • Known loss of water through breaks or leaks in plumbing systems • Escape of water from private property onto public property such as sidewalks or into the street from landscape irrigation

Residents who violate the water ordinances can be fined, said Lt. Brandon Wright, Hays police officer.

"Most people who've lived here awhile know Hays does not sit on a water supply. ... Depending on the rainfall we get in a given year, our water resources can run low, so we do have some restrictions on water."

The first violation is a warning, the second is $50, the third is $200, and the fourth violation is $250.

As of May 14, Ellis County remains in drought conditions ranging from abnormally dry to severe, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

Despite recent light rains, the city of Hays is more than three inches below average moisture for the year, according to official records at the K-State Agricultural Research Center south of town.&nbsp;

Outdoor watering restrictions to start soon in Hays

The Kansas Senior Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program is set to kick off on June 3.

Are you at least 60 years old and meet income guidelines?

Are you 55 years old and a member of an Indian Tribal Organization? 

Then you might qualify to receive free fruits, vegetables, cut herbs, and honey from local farmers' markets.

Eligibility is determined by household size, but benefits are distributed individually, meaning that anyone in your household who meets the age and income requirements may apply for and receive their own benefits.

1. Age: A senior must be 60 years old or older, or at least 55 years old and a member of an Indian Tribal Organization, on the day the coupons are issued.

Household Size, Monthly Income, Weekly Income

Benefits are given out on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you qualify you will receive a booklet of 10, $5 coupons for a one-time annual benefit of $50 to purchase eligible foods from authorized farmers.

Goals of the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program include:

· Increase consumption of fruits and vegetables for optimal health

· Increase direct marketing of Kansas foods

· Provide resources in the form of fresh, nutritious, unprepared, locally grown fruits, vegetables, herbs and honey from farmers markets to low income seniors

· Increase the domestic consumption of agricultural commodities by expanding or aiding in the expansion of domestic farmers markets

· Develop or aid in the development of new and additional farmers markets

The Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program is a project of the United States Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service. The program is coordinated by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, which is collaborating with local partners to identify and distribute checks to eligible seniors.

To apply in Ellis County, come to the Cottonwood Extension office located at 601 Main St. and fill out an application. The office is open 8am-12 noon and 1-5 pm. To apply in Barton County, contact the Barton County Health Department located at 1300 Kansas Avenue from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., 620-793-1902.

 </figure>By MONIQUE KOERNER Cottonwood Extension DistrictThe Kansas Senior Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program is set to kick off on June 3.Are you at least 60 years old and meet income guidelines?Are you 55 years old and a member of an Indian Tribal Organization? Then you might qualify to receive free fruits, vegetables, cut herbs, and honey from local farmers' markets.Eligibility is determined by household size, but benefits are distributed individually, meaning that anyone in your household who meets the age and income requirements may apply for and receive their own benefits.Eligibility criteria1. Age: A senior must be 60 years old or older, or at least 55 years old and a member of an Indian Tribal Organization, on the day the coupons are issued.2. Income:Household Size, Monthly Income, Weekly Income1 $2,322. $5362 $3,152, $7283 $3,981, $919Each additional member +$830, +192Benefits are given out on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you qualify you will receive a booklet of 10, $5 coupons for a one-time annual benefit of $50 to purchase eligible foods from authorized farmers.Goals of the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program include:· Increase consumption of fruits and vegetables for optimal health· Increase direct marketing of Kansas foods· Provide resources in the form of fresh, nutritious, unprepared, locally grown fruits, vegetables, herbs and honey from farmers markets to low income seniors· Increase the domestic consumption of agricultural commodities by expanding or aiding in the expansion of domestic farmers markets· Develop or aid in the development of new and additional farmers marketsThe Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program is a project of the United States Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service. The program is coordinated by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, which is collaborating with local partners to identify and distribute checks to eligible seniors.To apply in Ellis County, come to the Cottonwood Extension office located at 601 Main St. and fill out an application. The office is open 8am-12 noon and 1-5 pm. To apply in Barton County, contact the Barton County Health Department located at 1300 Kansas Avenue from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., 620-793-1902.If an individual cannot come into the office to fill out the paperwork they can appoint someone as a proxy to help them apply as well as pick up the produce for them. LINCOLN, Neb. — The University of Nebraska-Lincoln conferred 3,566 degrees during commencement exercises May 3, 17 and 18.

The 3,484 graduates are from 64 countries; 46 U.S. states and Puerto Rico; and about 230 Nebraska communities.

The Bob Devaney Sports Center hosted a ceremony for College of Law graduates May 3; Pinnacle Bank Arena held a ceremony for students earning graduate and professional degrees May 17; and Memorial Stadium hosted a ceremony for undergraduates May 18.
