SHERMAN COUNTY—Five people were injured in an accident just before 4p.m. Tuesday in Sherman County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2001 Volkswagen Atlas driven by&nbsp; Orlanda Danielle Billups, 45, Fairbanks, Alaska, was westbound on Interstate 70 twelve miles west of Goodland.

The SUV rear-ended 2019 Ford F150 driven by Daniel&nbsp; McCoy, 44, Wilmette, Illinois.

EMS transported Billips, three passenger in the Volkswagen from Colorado and a passenger in the pickup from Illinois to the hospital in Goodland.&nbsp;&nbsp;McCoy was not injured. All six were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

The pickup traveled over an icy patch of asphalt, left the roadway to the south, entered the median, struck the guardrail, rolled and came to rest on its wheels between the eastbound driving lanes of interstate 70 and the exit ramp 36 for Brewster.

EMS transported a passenger Barbara Furrow, 70, Aurora, to Citizen's Medical Center.&nbsp; Ronald Furrow was not wearing a seat belt and not injured, according to the KHP.

I-70 reopened at Goodland

The United Way of Ellis County 2023 campaign has reached 60 percent&nbsp; of its goal with slightly more than a month left in the campaign.

"We're still, in a sense, early. We have a lot of business employee campaigns that need to be turned in, so I'm still optimistic," said Erica Berges, executive director.

"Of course, there's still time to give. Our campaign really doesn't officially end until Jan. 31," she said.&nbsp;

Donations made Jan. 1-31 will still count for this year's campaign, which is the 70th anniversary of the organization in Ellis County.&nbsp;

United Way has many ways to donate in addition to business payroll deductions, which are among the most popular giving options. 

"A lot of employees like that because they can maybe give a higher amount because a little bit is coming out of each paycheck," Berges said. "That way it doesn't have to be one lump sum. It's a convenient way for people to donate."

Many businesses will match their employees' gifts.

The United Way awards a Champions Circle Trophy annually to the large and small businesses with the most per capita giving.

Last year Bank of Hays won the small-business trophy, and Midwest Energy won the large-business award.

You can also&nbsp; make a one-time donation, sign up for monthly donations, or participate in roundup options on the&nbsp;United Way website&nbsp;at <a href="https://www.liveunited.us/">liveunited.us</a>.&nbsp;

The roundup option will round up purchases to the nearest dollar with the change going to United Way. You can set a maximum donation per month.

Other options include dropping off checks or cash in person at the United Way office in the Chestnut Building, 1200 Main St., Suite 1o2, Hays or mailing checks to P.O. Box 367, Hays, KS 67601.

You also can use Venmo at @United-Way-of Ellis-County.

United Way has 14 partner agencies, which will use their funds for programs or services in one of three specific areas:&nbsp;

United Way created its own "14 Days of Christmas" this year on its Facebook page, spotlighting each agency and featuring its projects or services they help fund or provide. 

"There's some great ones out there," Berges said, "and many of them fit into multiple areas.

"That's what's nice about United Way. You can give one donation and know that it's going to 19 different programs offered by the 14 agencies," she said.

Donors can also specify their dollars go to a specific agency or project.

Applications for funding from the United Way of Ellis County were due a couple of weeks ago, and the agency's Care Council has begun the process of vetting each donor's request. The 12 members of the Care Council are comprised of United Way board members and others appointed by the city of Hays and Ellis County.

The Care Council reviews the applications and then visits the agencies in person to learn more about the programs and services, which are asking for funding.&nbsp;

"We want to be good stewards of donor dollars in the community," Berges said. "We want to make sure the money that we're handing out is going to what the community needs the most."

This year's fundraising goal is $370,000.

United Way of Ellis County campaign at 60% of goal; still time to donate

Thomas More Prep-Marian Junior-Senior High School in Hays will host its annual Monarch For a Day on Jan. 5.

Ellis County fifth through eighth graders are invited to attend the free event, said Chad Meitner, TMP-M High School principal.

"It's a natural transition. If you're a fifth grader, you're going to be going to the middle school," Meitner said. "If you're an eighth grader, you'll be going into high school. It's a perfect time for families to check it out."

Meitner said it's an opportunity to see what it would be like to be a TMP student.

"It's a chance to see what the small class sizes would be like, that individual attention. ... Until you sit in that environment, you don't really realize how cool it is," he said.

Participants will also get a taste of the school's traditional values, Meitner said, such as the Catholic faith and Christian values practiced in the classroom.&nbsp;

Potential students will also meet the teachers they would have as well as classmates.&nbsp;

"They'll rotate through about eight stations during the morning.&nbsp;You'll sit through shortened versions of what those classes would be like," Meitner said. "You get there at eight o'clock and see what it's like to start the day and then finish with lunch."

Holy Family Elementary School students are already scheduled to participate in Monarch For a Day.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2009 GMC Yukon driven by Kelsee&nbsp;Gutierrez, 38, Scott City, was westbound on Interstate 70 just west of Riga Road.

The driver lost control on the icy roadway. The SUV struck the guardrail on the north edge of the roadway, vaulted over the guardrail, rolled down the embankment and came to rest on the drivers side facing southwest.

EMS transported&nbsp;Gutierrez and a passenger Adrian V. Gutierrez, 39, Scott City to the Trego County-Lemke Memorial Hospital. Both were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Refresh – Webster’s Dictionary defines refresh as to restore strength and animation, or to restore or maintain by renewing supply.&nbsp;

A book I am reading described busy times, and especially the holidays, as a singer trying to maintain a high note without a breath. I like this analogy as we can get caught in the busyness of any season and forget what it feels like to just stop and rest; to truly refresh.&nbsp;

In our 4-H world, many people don’t realize that the number of tasks, planning, and events are just as busy in October, November, and December as we are during the fair. It is very much trying to maintain that high note without a breath!&nbsp;&nbsp;

In the midst of holiday gatherings, community events, and family activities, I hope that each of you can set aside the lists and hurry to slow down and enjoy the people around you. A friend modeled this over the weekend; she had dozens of tasks on her to-do list but realized that one of her favorite musicals was on tv. She stopped and enjoyed a couple of hours getting caught up in the familiar songs and story. Yes, she still had lots to do but that break helped her to feel refreshed and ready to tackle her list in a different way.&nbsp;

Kids can absolutely help with many tasks on our list. Does it take a little longer? Possibly! But you may also be helping them learn important skills and building memories in ways that you can’t begin to imagine! Will they do it exactly as you would? Maybe not but keep the focus on their help and the learning process.&nbsp;&nbsp;

My own family does things a little differently than I do whether household tasks, yard work, or cooking and I have learned to just roll with it! My husband folds towels differently than I do; it doesn’t make it wrong and, at the end of the day, the towels are folded and put away!&nbsp;&nbsp;

Our offices will be closed from December 23 through January 1 as we also take time to rest and refresh! My holiday wish for each of you is a bit of time to refresh your own spirit and schedule.&nbsp;

BERAN: Refresh

The Elves of Christmas Magic were at it again; bringing a bit of Christmas joy to Hays area Veterans, elderly and housebound folks with no one to remember them at Christmas.&nbsp;

The group started in 2018 when a local gal had the idea to make gift bags for 7 or 8 local Veterans with no one to remember them at Christmas.&nbsp;

While planning on what to put in the bags she got a call from a friend she had not heard from in over 50 years.&nbsp; While catching up she mentioned her idea of the gift bags.&nbsp; Her friend immediately exclaimed, “Oh we have to include the local Nursing Homes!”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Local Boy and Girl Scouts stepped up to help deliver the gift bags to our local nursing homes.&nbsp; It is still debatable which the residents enjoyed more, the gift bags or the visit from these bright young folks.&nbsp;

And so, the “Magic” of Christmas Magic began.&nbsp;

Each year the number of gift bags has grown.&nbsp; They now included residents of our two elderly high rises and Link who also have no one to remember them at this time of year.&nbsp;&nbsp; The VFW Auxiliary now helps and delivers gift bags to the high rises.&nbsp; Even COVID didn’t stop these “Elves”.&nbsp; The American Legion riders stepped up to replace the Scouts during this time and delivered the gift bags.&nbsp; They are now delivering bags to induvials at their homes.&nbsp; It is quite a site to see these folks roar up in their Harleys, Santa hats on their heads, toting a gift bag for a recipient.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

It was something to behold a grizzled old biker as he muttered under his breath, “It’s all worth it.”, after spontaneously being hugged hard by a recipient who couldn’t contain their joy at being remembered.&nbsp;

It becomes difficult at times for “Elves” to hold back tears themselves when an elderly recipient bursts into tears exclaiming how they had not received a gift is so very many years and repeatedly thanks them for remembering them this year.&nbsp;

Last year, the Scouts, now back to delivering gift bags, didn’t stop with just the bags, but also handed out candy bars at the north McDonalds to folks with a heartfelt “Merry Christmas”.&nbsp; They brightened the day for many that day, including themselves.&nbsp;

No longer a group project, this has become a community project.&nbsp;

This year 120 local area residents will be remembered and the group is projecting a need for 132 bags next year and each year the gift bags contents have also grown with this year forcing a move to a larger size bag with the best contents yet.&nbsp;

&nbsp;If you care to donate you can any time of year by dropping off a monetary only donation at Commerce bank in Hays where the group maintains a savings account.&nbsp; 100% of the donations goes to filling the gift bags each year.&nbsp; All administrative costs are borne by the elves themselves.&nbsp;

This year they started giving window decals to everyone who donated $100.00 or more.&nbsp; They encourage you to support the local businesses who have come through for them year after year and honk a hello to any car you see displaying the Elf decal as these are individuals who have also helped.&nbsp; They express a sincere apology to folks who donate less and don’t receive a decal.&nbsp; The decals are expensive to produce and these are gals on small fixed incomes, but they expressed a sincere thank you to these folks and an understanding without them there would be no Christmas Magic.&nbsp;

Christmas Magic brings holiday joy to those in need

David R. McDaniel, mayor of Ellis, was awarded the E.A. Mosher Excellence in Local Government award at the 2023 League of Kansas Municipalities Conference on Oct. 9. McDaniel is a strong advocate for the city of Ellis and for the League of Kansas Municipalities.

McDaniel believes in positive and progressive growth, leads his community's long-range planning efforts, encourages public-private partnerships and collaborates with other governmental entities to secure the necessary resources for the city of Ellis.

McDaniel's leadership was instrumental in guiding the city of Ellis' governing body to address the community's search for a safe and ample source of water. His efforts resulted in the investments toward water infrastructure, development of a water treatment plant and distribution system, and the recent purchase of a water well field.

McDaniel also negotiated the implementation of the first Tax Increment Financing, also known as a TIF, in the state for affordable residential housing. He advanced an inter-county partnership resulting in the development of the Ellis Medical Clinic. He worked to secure private investment and partnerships resulting in the construction of the Interstate 70 Ellis Travel Center and Days Inn Hotel. He began the volunteer recycling program, a stand-alone city service, and he chaired the Ellis Lakeside Campground Expansion Project.&nbsp;

McDaniel is currently leading a community organization partnership to secure funding to revitalize the downtown business district. The entire Ellis community has benefited from McDaniel's experience, professionalism, knowledge and proven abilities in leadership.

His primary consideration in decision-making has always been what is in the best interest of the citizens. McDaniel is a true champion of public service and a role model for other local city officials to follow.

Congratulations to McDaniel on this prestigious award and thank you for your contributions to the league and you're tireless dedication to the city of Ellis.

NCK Tech College releases Fall 2023 Honor Roll

If you’ve ever read George Carlin’s views on aging, you know that our perspective on getting older changes throughout life. As kids, we were always thinking of our age in fractions, excited to be a year older. By the time we hit 35, some of us might stretch the truth and fib that we are a couple of years younger than what the birth certificate clearly states. But a funny thing happens once a person turns 100. We start counting in fractions again, proud of how far we have come.

What if we always viewed our age as something to be proud of? With age comes experience, wisdom, and clear priorities. Through time, all of these things ultimately mold us into the person we are today. So instead of reminiscing on who we used to be, what if we were appreciative of how far we have come?

This is what Wellness Wednesdays will be about— embracing aging and learning how to do it well. This January will kick off the monthly series at the Great Bend Senior Center at 11 a.m. You can catch me here the first Wednesday of each month sharing information related to healthy aging, nutrition, physical activity, Medicare guidance and more.

Each lesson will be laid back and interactive. Occasionally, I will bring a healthy treat to sample and you’ll get the recipe to try it on your own. You’ll also be sure to take away new information and get the chance to socialize.

In our first session on Jan. 3, we will discuss perspective. The connection between the mind and body is strong. An overall, positive attitude affects happiness, health, and well-being. Similar to physical activity and eating well, our outlook on life can affect our life expectancy and quality of life! Research continues to explore the effects of optimism on health. These include:

· Better psychological and physical wellbeing

· Reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease

· Better coping skills during hardship and times of stress

It’s amazing how mental health and physical health are so closely related. To learn more about this connection, and how to practice healthy habits that improve optimism, join me on Jan. 3 at the Great Bend Senior Center from 11 to 11:45 a.m. right before you grab lunch.

Three-day weather outlook

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house, Not a creature was stirring EXCEPT that darn mouse. It chewed and it rustled so to honor my spouse, I set out some traps for that darn pesky mouse.

We don’t have a chimney, or mantle or poker And the nearest we own to a fireplace is a smoker. Our stockings were all holey and strewn under the bed, So our old hunting boots hung by the smoker instead.

Our puppy was nestled all snug in her bed Under the laundry room table with her stuffed toy named Fred. She quivered and whimpered; to watch her was funny As she dreamed she would finally corral that ol’ bunny.

My pj’s were long johns, all cozy and white And I crawled into bed and turned out the light. Deer season had ended with no deer in the shed So visions of deer jerky danced in my head.

My wife lay beside me in jammies of red She was already dreaming of Claus and his sled, When out in the drive there arose such a ruckus I sprang from my bed to see what had struck us.

I should have known not to “spring” from my bed Cause I busted my big toe and clobbered my head. As I limped up the hallway I grabbed my deer rifle I’d show them I was someone with whom not to trifle!

I peered out the window and what did I see? Why old Santa himself, alive as could be. And there stood old Rudolf in all of his glory, With his nose shining brightly just like in the story.

But all I could see was his head on my wall . With that bright red nose twinkling to brighten my hall. His rack was enormous, at least twenty points, The thought of its score made me weak in my joints

I wanted that rack, whether legal or not, So I eased out the door to line up my shot. I clicked off the safety and steadied myself So I wouldn’t endanger the Jolly Old Elf.

Now remember those traps I’d set out before? Well there happened to be one right by the door. While I tried to be sneaky so no one would know, That trap clamped its jaws around my sore big toe.

I jerked on the trigger and the shot went astray And ended up lodged in the front of the sleigh. The reindeer all spooked and yanked on the sled Dumping St Nick on the floor on his head.

They shot out the drive as slick as a whistle And away they all flew like the down of a thistle, But I heard him exclaim as they drove out of sight Rudolph you blockhead; no more deer hunters tonight!

Exploring Kansas Outdoors: Twas the Night before Christmas

A fascination with martial arts led a Hays High School student to take advantage of a 4-H program to travel to Japan this summer.

Isaac Moreno, 16, practices Aikido at Aikido of Northwest Kansas. He said he has long been fascinated with Asian cultures.

From gigantic fireworks displays to intricate shrine carvings, Moreno experienced the culture and people of Japan.

Moreno's trip was part of a 4-H International Youth Exchange. He spent four weeks in Ibaraki prefecture, which is on the east coast of Japan, close to Tokyo.

This was Moreno's first time flying and the first time he remembers seeing the ocean. He visited Florida when he was 5 but said he didn't remember the trip.

Moreno stayed with a host family while in Japan. He experienced daily life with them as well as went sightseeing.

They visited the giant Buddha statue,&nbsp;Ushiku Daibutsu, in Ushiku,&nbsp;Ibaraki. The bronze Buddha is 120 meters tall and the world's largest bronze statue of Buddha.

He also visited the Sky Tree in Tokyo, which stands 634 meters tall. The tower offers an observation deck with sweeping views of the city.

"You can see all around the city, and part of it is a glass floor," Moreno said.

He also attended the city of Mito's Komon Festival, which featured parades, dancing and fireworks.

He said sitting on the roof of his host family's home and watching the elaborate fireworks display was his favorite experience of the trip.

He went to school with one of his host brothers, who was in the sixth grade, for four days. He attended classes as well as played basketball with his host brother and his classmates.

He also met with students in the English Club. The students learn English through children's songs and stories. While Moreno was in Japan, the students were learning the story of Tom Sawyer.

"They had this CD they would play, and the kids would memorize the English and the Japanese of it," Moreno said.

The students studied math and English, as well as Japanese-specific classes such as calligraphy.&nbsp;

He also watched local students practice Aikido and Judo during an afterschool club at the school.

Moreno knows little Japanese, but his host family spoke both English and Japanese.&nbsp;

Daily dinners consisted of a bowl of rice or miso soup with fish or lean meat, which was eaten with chopsticks. The family didn't serve beef.&nbsp;

Moreno has been a 4-H member for six years. He is the president of his club, the Big Creek Astros Club in Hays.

Moreno participates in 4-H photography and took many photographs during his trip to Japan. He also participates in the club's regular service projects, including singing Christmas carols during the holidays to seniors in nursing care.

He said he is eagerly looking forward to more travel. 4-H also offers an exchange trip to Norway, and Moreno said he would like to visit there as well.

Although his interest still lies in Asia, he would like to visit China to learn about its culture and history.

Moreno encouraged other 4-Hers to explore the opportunities for travel through the 4-H International Youth Exchange. The program is in significant need of host families in the United States to accept exchange students from other countries.

He said he has long been fascinated with Asian cultures.From gigantic fireworks displays to intricate shrine carvings, Moreno experienced the culture and people of Japan.Moreno's trip was part of a 4-H International Youth Exchange. He spent four weeks in Ibaraki prefecture, which is on the east coast of Japan, close to Tokyo.This was Moreno's first time flying and the first time he remembers seeing the ocean. He visited Florida when he was 5 but said he didn't remember the trip.Moreno stayed with a host family while in Japan. He experienced daily life with them as well as went sightseeing.<figure>

Hays student visits Japan as part of 4-H exchange program

STEM Harvest, a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing STEM education in western Kansas, has received funding of $136,400 in a grant from the Patterson Family Foundation.

The funds will support STEM Harvest’s expansion efforts, furthering its mission to inspire and empower the next generation of innovators, scientists and engineers.

STEM Harvest was founded by Dallas and Dacia Haselhorst and is dedicated to advancing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education in western Kansas.

Positioned at the forefront of STEM education in the region, STEM Harvest prioritizes cultivating critical skills essential for shaping a technologically proficient future.

“We are truly blessed to receive this grant from the Patterson Family Foundation. The Foundation recognizes that STEM education can play a role in rural community success,” said Dallas Haselhorst, STEM Harvest founder and president. “Our organization is committed to inclusivity and fostering curiosity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills by offering hands-on learning opportunities, mentoring and cutting-edge resources. 

"Whether those learning decide to get into a tech-focused field such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, or a trade career, the skills acquired at STEM Harvest can help them achieve future successes.“

Western Kansas KDOT employees celebrate service anniversaries

One of the great themes of the Christmas season is surprise. Every child excited for Christmas morning understands it: the sense of wonder that comes along with an unexpected gift. From a Savior born in a manger to a present that reveals the care of a co-worker or friend, this season is all about surprises.

Politics is rarely characterized by wonder, and it would be wrong to put legislative bills or government actions on the same level as Christmas gifts, whether earthly or divine. Yet, I fear this legitimate caution might lead us to wrongly ignore just how surprising Governor Kelly’s latest proposal for Medicaid expansion really is. This Christmas season, it’s worth reflecting upon--and upon the responses to it from other legislative leaders too.

Everyone knows that Medicaid expansion, something that has been enacted by every state around Kansas and has the support of 70% of all Kansans, has always been Kelly’s largest legislative aim, and also the one which the Republican leadership has been most determined to deny her, regularly refusing to allow votes on the topic, even as a majority of Republicans state-wide agree with the need to expand the policy.

In this latest proposal, Kelly calls the Republican opposition’s bluff, by gifting them concessions on practically all their specific policy objections.

In regards to the objection that Medicaid must be denied to the working poor so as to protect funds earmarked for Kansas’s most vulnerable citizens, the proposal has a work requirement (something that puts our governor at odds with the Biden administration). In regards to objections that Medicaid might be used to support reproductive services which many Kansans morally oppose, the proposal limits any medical support for abortion solely to cases of rape, incest, or where the life of the mother is directly threatened (something that puts our governor at odds with her own Democratic party, and possibly the Kansas Supreme Court as well).

Obviously no policy proposal will ever come through legislative debates and deal-making unscathed, so it’s possible to see these concessions as feints that the governor assumes won’t survive anyway. Republican leaders like Kansas House Speaker Dan Hawkins and Senate President Ty Masterson have both treated it that way, condescendingly praising the governor for validating their concerns but dismissing her proposal as “smoke and mirrors” nonetheless.

That is, I think, an ungenerous response. Why not instead recognize this proposal for what it is: a genuinely remarkable offering, putting some truly surprising options on the negotiating table?

After all, work requirements have a contentious history, with complicated enforcement rules, little track record of success, and deep opposition from welfare advocates. And in the wake of the strong defeat—heavily influenced by young women voters—of the abortion-rights-denying Value Them Both amendment last year, proposing rules that would limit the exercise of those rights seems like the last thing a Democratic politician like Kelly would do. And yet here both of them are, waiting to be torn into by Republican legislators, like wrapped presents beneath a tree.

I think this is the best way to view Governor Kelly’s Medicaid proposal: not as a gambit, but as a gift, a surprising attempt by an outgoing governor to make certain all the elite objections to this overwhelmingly popular policy are heard and met. Unexpected Christmas surprises are not always well-received, and unfortunately, this one likely won’t be either. But in the spirit of the season, we should appreciate it nonetheless.
