Ness City is excited to welcome Russ Tuttle, founder of The Stop Trafficking Project, Russ Tuttle.

The Stop Trafficking Project has used the BeAlert Strategy with more than 100,000 students in Missouri and Kansas via school assemblies designed to educate and empower students to be safer when online. The Stop Trafficking Project exists to end domestic minor sex trafficking before it starts by disrupting the exploitation of vulnerability.

The BeAlert presentation is powerful, practical information, is designed for immediate impact, and has proven long-term influence in communities that engage with The Stop Trafficking Project.

Tuttle said, “We first educate and empower adults in a community to become trusted adults that move from awareness to action. Then, we provide age-appropriate presentations with specific content, and presentation style&nbsp;for students in grades K-2, 3-5, and 6-12. The BeAlert Strategy appeals to the hero in students and directs their attention to be safer online.”

TREGO COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 4p.m. Thursday in Trego County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2023 Freightliner semi driven by&nbsp; &nbsp;Kevin Paul Beaver, 62, Watkins, Colorado, was eastbound on Interstate just east of 150th Avenue.

The vehicle lost traction and jackknifed into the south ditch. The power unit came to rest on the shoulder partially in the driving lane.

EMS transported Beaver to the Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Driver hospitalized after semi jackknifed on I-70

PAWNEE COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 1:30p.m. Thursday in Pawnee County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1995 Dodge Dakota driven by&nbsp; Jerod W.&nbsp;Dailing, 44, Norton, was&nbsp; westbound on Kansas 156 in the city of Burdett.

The pickup rear-ended a 2022 Kenworth semi that was&nbsp;parked on the south shoulder facing eastbound.&nbsp;

Ellis High School announces 2024 Snowball royalty

RUSH COUNTY&nbsp;–&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and the Rush County Sheriff’s Office are conducting a death investigation after a man was found deceased Wednesday morning near La Crosse.

At around 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday, the Rush County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a citizen who reported seeing a body lying in the south ditch on Avenue N, around a half mile east of U.S. Highway 183, near La Crosse, according to a media release from the KBI. Deputies responded to the location and found the body.

The man has been identified as 18-year-old Zachary Thiel, of La Crosse. A vehicle believed to have been driven by Thiel was located stuck in the snow, approximately a half mile east of Thiel’s location.

🏀🎥 Indians set to begin play at Orange and Black tournament

&nbsp;Members of Ellis County EMS were recognized by the Ellis County Commission on Tuesday for saving a woman's life in August.

Those staff were Technician Haynes, Technician Whitmer, Technician Moore, Technician Bollig and Technician Henry.

Danita Schroeder, Ellis County EMS director, spoke before the Ellis County Commission on Tuesday.&nbsp;

On Aug. 18, Ellis County EMS responded to a 911 call for a woman having a seizure at a local gas station.

When the EMS crew arrived, they found the woman was not breathing and had no pulse.&nbsp;

The crew started CPR and respirations. The crew gave her two defibulator shocks with a cardiac monitor, started an IV, gave her cardiac medicine and placed an advanced airway, Schroeder said.

With the lifesaving actions, the crew was able to get her heart beating again and transported to the local emergency room.

"She was able to leave the hospital a week later with no neurological deficits and return home," Schroeder said.

The woman was unable to be at the county commission meeting, but&nbsp;Schroeder said the woman said in a recent phone call she and her husband were very appreciative and praised the Ellis County crew for their quick response and professionalism.

 </figure>By CRISTINA JANNEY Hays Post&nbsp;Members of Ellis County EMS were recognized by the Ellis County Commission on Tuesday for saving a woman's life in August.Those staff were Technician Haynes, Technician Whitmer, Technician Moore, Technician Bollig and Technician Henry.Danita Schroeder, Ellis County EMS director, spoke before the Ellis County Commission on Tuesday.&nbsp;On Aug. 18, Ellis County EMS responded to a 911 call for a woman having a seizure at a local gas station.When the EMS crew arrived, they found the woman was not breathing and had no pulse.&nbsp;The crew started CPR and respirations. The advisory took effect on January 17 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE officials issued the advisory because of an equipment malfunction due to freezing, resulting in a loss of pressure in the distribution system.&nbsp; Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.&nbsp;

Students at Hays High School learned about the dangers of opioids through a presentation by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

KBI Director Tony Mattivi engaged with students on Wednesday to raise awareness about the opioid crisis.

Mattivi said the sole avenue toward building a healthier community is by understanding the risks associated with substances such as pills and joints, which may contain fentanyl.

"We cannot arrest enough drug dealers to keep this from happening," Mattivi said. "The only way we can get out of this problem is to educate people."&nbsp;

Mattivi served as a federal prosecutor, handling cases related to drug trafficking, violent crime, organized crime, gangs and various other offenses.

The presentation provided a brief overview of the history of fentanyl in the United States.

"When we first started seeing this problem back in 2017 and 2018, fentanyl was being introduced to the United States by the Chinese government," he said.

Chinese involvement declined as Mexican cartels realized the profitability of distributing fentanyl.

Mattivi said fentanyl found in Kansas is always traced back to the same two organizations.

"As soon as the cartels realized how much money they could profit off of fentanyl, they elbowed the Chinese out of their way and took over distribution and importation to the United States," he said.&nbsp;

Two milligrams of fentanyl is enough to kill you, Mattivi said, making several size comparisons to a penny, the point of a pencil and a dollar.

"Imagine taking a dollar bill and tearing it into 100 pieces, every one of those pieces is about a milligram so two pieces of that dollar bill are fatal," he said.

Mattivi said fentanyl can be found in every community in Kansas in different variations with other types of illegal drugs.&nbsp;

"We're seeing it mixed with crack, methamphetamine and cocaine," he said. "We even had a death in Kansas of a young person smoking a joint that had been laced."

Cases similar to this have increased in the past year among methamphetamine users, attributed to the mixing of fentanyl with the substance.

The images in the presentation depicted how cartels can produce pills with a striking resemblance to those manufactured in an FDA laboratory.

"The business model of Cartels is trying to addict as many people to fentanyl as possible. They don't care about killing a few people along the way," he said.

The presentation also featured two videos showcasing the FDA-regulated laboratories and a lab with operated by cartels in Mexico.

A sophomore student who attended the presentation was surprised to learn how much fentanyl could prove to be fatal.

"I didn't know fentanyl could be in pills," he said. "I didn't know two milligrams could make you overdose," the student said.

Following the presentation, the student said it altered his view of just how dangerous the substance is.

"It's scary to think about because you'd think it's a lot more than it is, but just a small amount can kill you," he said.&nbsp;

Mattivi also addressed Hays Middle School students earlier in the morning.&nbsp;

KBI gives opioids presentation to Hays High students

Psychologists say that January, with its cold temperatures and early darkness, can produce feelings of listlessness and a post-holiday letdown.

For those who struggled to celebrate the holiday season while also grieving a loss, the month can quickly become “Blue January.”

Three Hays organizations have teamed up to present a panel discussion on “The Unseen Effects of Grief and Mental Health Concerns in Everyday Life.”

The event will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, in the Black and Gold Room of the Memorial Union at Fort Hays State University. It is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

The panelists, all from Ellis County, are Kenneth Windholz, Kate McGonigal, Myrna Jordan and Kris Munsch.S

Sponsoring the event are the Fort Hays State University Psychology Club, NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) on Campus and the Center for Life Experience, a non-profit organization that offers grief support services in Ellis County.

Laura Allen, executive director of the center, said, “CFLE is so excited to cohost this event. It’s important to us to work with others to remove the stigmas surrounding mental health concerns and their contributing factors.

“The holidays are so hard for so many. People may be missing family members who have passed, they may be struggling with being alone, or they may just feel sad. By coming together in an open, honest, caring way, we hope to explore those issues while giving our audience the opportunity to explore and come to terms with their own grief or other mental health concerns.”

Windholz has been active in the field of psychology for 50 years. He is a clinical psychotherapist and a full-time instructor in the FHSU Department of Psychology, teaching both graduate and undergraduate students.

He was the recipient of FHSU’s Pilot Award in 2022 as the outstanding faculty member at the university. In addition to his teaching duties, he serves as president of the Kansas Association of Masters in Psychology, president of the Board of Directors for NAMI Kansas, and serves as the adviser to the NAMI campus group.

Jordan has been a hospice social worker since 1993 and works at HaysMed. She volunteers with the Center for Life Experience, helping with its annual Healing Kids’ Hearts events. The center is one of the few organizations in Kansas that offers grief support services for children, and Jordan helps organize those events each year.

McGonigal is an associate professor of sociology at FHSU where she teaches classes in death and dying, focusing on end-of-life care and caregiving. Her research focuses on the funeral home industry in central and western Kansas, as well as changes in post-pandemic grieving practices.

Munsch said after his son, Blake died, everything in his life changed. As a way of dealing with his grief, Munsch started “The Bird House Project.” Now he travels the country speaking about that project and what he has learned through his grieving journey. His speaking engagements range from being the keynote speaker at corporate conventions to addressing death and dying classes via Zoom from coast to coast.

“Each of our panelists is passionate about helping others on their journey, whatever path that may be,” Allen said. “Connecting those who may be struggling with a needed resource is, ultimately, the goal of our panel discussion this year."

The panel discussion is part of the John C. Thorns Jr. Memorial Lecture Series put on by the Center for Life Experience. The lecture series, which debuted in 2019, is in memory of the late John C. Thorns Jr., one-time chairman of the Art Department at FHSU. 

Ann G. Leiker, retired executive director of the center, said Thorns “was a strong spokesperson for mental health and suicide prevention.” He was on the center’s founding board and helped start one of the center’s grief support groups, Healing after Loss of Suicide, for those who have lost a loved one to suicide.

Thorns’ sister, Margaret Schmidt, will be part of the program at this year’s event, Allen said.

In the past, the lecture series has always featured a single speaker. Allen said the center decided on a panel discussion this year “in the hope that those in attendance connect with at least one thought, one idea, one person, or any/all of the above. 

“Knowing that someone else has been where you are, faced similar struggles and is here to talk about it can be all the encouragement someone needs to put one foot in front of the other again tomorrow,” she said.

As a way of dealing with his grief, Munsch started “The Bird House Project.” Now he travels the country speaking about that project and what he has learned through his grieving journey. His speaking engagements range from being the keynote speaker at corporate conventions to addressing death and dying classes via Zoom from coast to coast.“Each of our panelists is passionate about helping others on their journey, whatever path that may be,” Allen said. “Connecting those who may be struggling with a needed resource is, ultimately, the goal of our panel discussion this year."John C. Thorns Lecture SeriesThe panel discussion is part of the John C. Thorns Jr. Memorial Lecture Series put on by the Center for Life Experience. The lecture series, which debuted in 2019, is in memory of the late John C. Thorns Jr., one-time chairman of the Art Department at FHSU. Ann G. Leiker, retired executive director of the center, said Thorns “was a strong spokesperson for mental health and suicide prevention.” He was on the center’s founding board and helped start one of the center’s grief support groups, Healing after Loss of Suicide, for those who have lost a loved one to suicide.Thorns’ sister, Margaret Schmidt, will be part of the program at this year’s event, Allen said.In the past, the lecture series has always featured a single speaker. Allen said the center decided on a panel discussion this year “in the hope that those in attendance connect with at least one thought, one idea, one person, or any/all of the above. “Knowing that someone else has been where you are, faced similar struggles and is here to talk about it can be all the encouragement someone needs to put one foot in front of the other again tomorrow,” she said.More information about the center’s grief support groups and other services is available by contacting Allen at laura@cflehope.org. Trilogy concert  on Feb. 3 to benefit Hays High FFA

Reading posts on I Grew Up In sites often drowns me in memories. Recently, an update from a Southwest Kansas Community once home to grandparents, an uncle and his family, and me for a while opened floodgates to my past. Based on the conversation thread following that post, it generated remembrances for many whose dads worked the oil patch in the 50s, 60s, and 70s.

Before Dad served as a Marine in Korea, he and his brothers roughnecked and drilled wells across Central and Northwest Kansas. Once he returned from overseas, he headed back to the oilfield, which inadvertently led to him meeting my mom. During off-hours, he relaxed at the Brass Rail in Hays where he fell for a cute freshman from Southwest Kansas. Once married, they moved to Plainville. Mom, whose dad was a teacher, coach, and store owner, enjoyed dad’s rig sites, a world entirely different from that in which she grew up.

The following year, she bundled me in blankets and carried bottles and dry diapers as they lugged me to noisy wells, brightly lit so men could work 24 hours a day. My memories include her pointing out the Christmas Tree and Crow’s Nest outlined against dark skies. As a toddler, the Dog House that the crew entered and exited intrigued me. When I begged to meet the dog, my parents laughed.

The comment thread following that online post indicated a bunch of us oil-patch kids shared mud-pits full of remembrances. Recalled sounds, strings of lights, scents of diesel, oil, and bit grinding through rock, men in denim and khaki and protective metal hats clambering up and down long stairs and towering structures was a repeated refrain. I recalled watching men step onto the Kelley, link an arm around a huge chain, and ride to the crow’s nest topping the well tower

Besides the group’s rig memories, those growing up in that world share a love of rocks that began at well sites. My cousin brought up her fascination with canvas sample bags full of earth’s guts collected during drilling. Another woman agreed and described how she loved visiting the geologist’s trailer to see samples. Based on comments, I could almost touch and smell those objects. To this day, discovering a drilled core in someone’s rock collection thrills me.

Oil patch kids knew about emergency food stored in every trunk. When we couldn’t get home by mealtime, Dad opened a box filled with a P-38 and canned Vienna sausages, beanie weenies, fruit cocktail, and other foods we loved. We’d gorge on his ambrosia stash and drink distilled water from a plastic jug as our nectar. Locale didn’t matter—plains or mountains—it our introduction to alfresco dining.

Danger accompanied these jobs. No one ran wild around rig sites. Our moms corralled our curiosity to keep us from interfering with our dads’ work. Every oil field family had friends who’d suffered broken jaws, limbs, or death. My uncle hung a fire-blackened metal hat in the hallway to remind himself and us he’d survived a dreaded blow-out.

Who knew a post on a memory page could immerse so many in childhood recollections? Those lucky enough to grow up in the patch have stories and rock collections enough to entertain our entire old age.

The high on Friday will dip to 17 degrees with an overnight low of -3. The high on Saturday will be 18 with a low of 10 and breezy forecast for Saturday night.

Another wind chill warning forecast for Hays

PITTSFIELD, ILL. — The nearly 45,000-acre P5 Ranch – the largest contiguous ranch in the state of Kansas – has officially changed ownership.

Located in Hamilton and Kearny counties about 24 miles west of Garden City, the ranch was recently sold by Whitetail Properties Real Estate. Spanning 44,923 +/- acres, it is the company’s largest property sale by acreage to date.

Mitch Keeley and Adam Hann, the Whitetail Properties Land Specialists in western Kansas who handled the sale, said P5 Ranch is truly a one-of-a-kind property. “Usually when we sell a property, it’s either a farm, cattle operation or recreational land,” said Keeley. “We often represent properties that fit one of these categories, but what’s so unique about the P5 is it combines all three property types. It’s very hard to find something like this in Kansas.”

Consisting of over 40,000 acres of prime pastureland and more than 2,700 acres of pivot irrigated and dryland tillable ground, the P5 Ranch has the ability to support a capacity of 6,500 to 8,000 head of cattle. The 17 irrigation pivots on the ranch are used for growing alfalfa, triticale and corn to support the high capacity of livestock grazing the ranch.

In addition to its top-notch agriculture qualities, the P5 offers some of the best hunting in the state. With over 17 miles of Arkansas River frontage, it provides incredible whitetail, mule deer and elk hunting along the river and throughout the sandhills. High populations of upland birds inhabit the ranch, and a 36-acre lake provides excellent waterfowl opportunities as well.

To top it off, the ranch is complete with a large log cabin which has provided housing for hunters on the ranch over the years. There are also four ranch houses for ranch employees.

Hann said it is also very rare to find a ranch of this size in such high-quality condition. “The P5 has been exceptionally well-maintained over the years with excellent fencing, new irrigation pivots and as clean of a ranch as you’ll find anywhere in the Midwest,” he said.

The selling price is not being disclosed, although it is described by Whitetail Properties as “top of the market” for a ranch of this magnitude. The former owners’ decision to sell was

based on not wanting to burden the next generation of ownership with the future responsibility of selling or handing off the ranch.

The two Kansas land specialists said another unique aspect of the transaction is that, unlike most of their sales, an extensive marketing campaign was not undertaken. “Given the magnitude of the ranch, we knew the number of potential buyers would be very limited,” said Keeley. “We realized that instead of widely advertising, we had to go out and find a buyer whose criteria fit the operation. And that’s exactly what we were able to do.”

That strategy proved successful, as the ranch was sold in just two months. The buyer determined that the ranch would be a good fit for his large cattle operation and that the purchase price would provide a rate of return that made sense for the investment.

“We took the buyer to the ranch multiple times to meet with the owners and felt everyone formed a great relationship from day one,” said Hann. “In most deals, the seller never meets the buyer. Upon closing of the P5, we were confident all parties walked away with a sense of satisfaction, and new relationships were formed that will carry on for many years.”

Habitat for Humanity of Ellis County has renovated two homes for a resident in Hays and a family in Ellis.

The group is part of a global, nonprofit organization  operated on Christian principles that work to eliminate substandard housing through construction, rehabilitation and advocacy for fair policies.

Habitat for Humanity of Ellis County is smaller than other charters in Kansas, such as Wichita, standing as the only chapter on the western side of the state.

Executive Director Leslie Wyatt said the organization has a mission to help others in the community.

"I'm excited to welcome both of the homeowners into the Habitat family."A mother and her children in Ellis received their new home in mid-November, that Wyatt said meets the family's expectations."The family fit perfectly with the size of the house," she said. "The house has four bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, a kitchen and a dining room."<figure>

 </figure>The house also features a basement with a living room, a laundry area and a large garage.Wyatt said the new residents were able to celebrate the holidays in their home and were thankful to those who made it possible."Everyone puts in so much effort to make this happen," she said. "The families moving in is the best part for us."The house's exterior was also redesigned with a new fence, concrete sidewalks, a retaining wall, and an updated deck.<figure>

 </figure>"The house was renovated with the help of a generous grant received&nbsp;through the Dane G. Hansen Foundation from Logan," Wyatt said.New carpeting was installed in both the Ellis and Hays residences. The new homeowner for the Hays house moved into the home in early December.The one-story house in downtown Hays consists of two bedrooms, a single bathroom and a small kitchen, covering 820 square feet.<figure>

 </figure>The house was purchased in June and underwent remodeling to accommodate its sole resident, who lives with her dog.The exterior was also renovated as the property has a small front and backyard but an area for flowers and vegetables.&nbsp;Through collaborative efforts, Habitat for Humanity also acquired a new refrigerator and stove through a donation."The Hays house was renovated with new windows," Wyatt said. "New appliances were provided through Whirlpool and Habitat for Humanity International's Gifts in Kind program."<figure>

 </figure>Habitat for Humanity operates almost entirely with volunteers and does not generate profits from house sales.Instead, the organization strives to maintain a low final house cost for the homeowner, Wyatt said.Habitat homeowners must complete requirements by working on either their own or other Habitat homes.
