Each semester Fort Hays Tech | North Central awards a member of our staff or faculty with a 212° Award. 

The purpose of the 212° Award is to recognize individuals who demonstrate superior dedication and the willingness to go that extra degree! 212 degrees is the boiling point of water. Everyone has watched it happen as water goes from still to rumbling when it reaches that threshold. That boiling point is a transformation point. 

Recipients of this award are employees who voluntarily go above and beyond the call of duty and are transformational leaders at the college. These employees demonstrate a positive attitude and commitment to their profession, students, fellow employees, and a loyalty to the mission of Fort Hays Tech | North Central.

The recipient of 2025 Fall 212 Award is Tricia Cline. Tricia is the Dean of Enrollment for the Beloit and Hays campuses.

Tricia Cline is a fantastic employee and colleague, very deserving of this recognition," said Fort Hays Tech | North Central President, Eric Burks. "In addition to excelling at her typical duties, she also led us through a complete re-branding and the implementation of a new software system. Hays High (8-6, 7-1) tries to take another step towards the Western Athletic Conference title on Thursday as they host Liberal (6-13, 2-4). It is the first of three games this season between the two teams.

This is the only conference games on Thursday. Friday the Indians host Garden City for a single game while Dodge City travels to Great Bend for a double header.

Property abatements for two former motel properties in Hays will be heard by the Hays City Commission this afternoon.&nbsp;

If an abatement is ultimately approved by commissioners, and if the owner does not take action to remedy the issues, the city will hire a contractor to demolish the structure, and all costs of abatement will be charged to the property owner.

The Rodeway Inn Motel, 3404 Vine St., is owned by HKHR Hospitality Inc. and was <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/5e02e23b-0f72-40cb-9cb4-862afda92c4c">shut down by the Kansas Fire Marshal</a> last year for significant structural damage.&nbsp; On Oct. 5, 2024, the fire marshal was notified by the owner that the motel was closed.&nbsp;

Also under consideration for property abatement is the former Budget Host Inn, 810 E. Eighth St., owned by Mark Ottley. 

In 2019, Ottley remodeled two of the closed motel buildings into apartments. In May 2020, three of the remaining four buildings were demolished. 

City staff received building plans for the last building in June 2024 and completed a full plan review. No action has been taken by Ottley since then to obtain permits for the project.

Commissioners will also review an ordinance to establish a Reinvestment Housing Incentive District and a plan developing 101 houses and public facilities in the Tallgrass 2nd Addition, Phase 4 at the northeast corner of Wheatland Ave. and 22nd Street.

The developer, Heart of America Development Corporation of Ellis County,&nbsp; requests the district financing on a pay-as-you-go basis for 25 years. 

Heart of America proposes that the city finance the majority of the district-eligible costs and construct the infrastructure, utilizing the district revenues to offset the city’s costs. Revenues will come from incremental property taxes revenues collected on the project site.

A low bid award will be considered for the construction of a stormwater equipment storage building by QMC, Inc., Gove County, for $292,650. QMC most recently built the Hays Microfactory.&nbsp;

A federal judge in Maryland ordered the Trump administration Thursday to pause enforcement of a new U.S. Education Department ban on diversity, equity and inclusion practices.

The order came as another federal judge in New Hampshire issued a preliminary injunction temporarily blocking&nbsp;<a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.nhd.65138/gov.uscourts.nhd.65138.74.0.pdf" target="_blank">the Trump administration</a>&nbsp;from yanking federal funding from many schools.

The New Hampshire order, though, only applied to schools that employ members of the National Education Association — the country’s largest labor union, which brought the case challenging the ban — or the Center for Black Educator Development.

The rulings used different legal logic but arrived at the same conclusion: The administration’s ban on race-conscious practices is not valid.

In Maryland, U.S. District Judge Stephanie A. Gallagher&nbsp;<a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.mdd.577437/gov.uscourts.mdd.577437.60.0.pdf" target="_blank">said she ruled</a>&nbsp;not on the merits of the policy, but the way the Trump administration developed it.

“This Court takes no view as to whether the policies at issue here are good or bad, prudent or foolish, fair or unfair. But this Court is constitutionally required to closely scrutinize whether the government went about creating and implementing them in the manner the law requires,” she wrote. “The government did not.”

Gallagher’s order pauses the enforcement of a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ed.gov/media/document/dear-colleague-letter-sffa-v-harvard-109506.pdf" target="_blank">Feb. 14 letter</a>&nbsp;to school districts from Craig Trainor, the department’s acting assistant secretary for civil rights, that threatened to rescind federal funds for schools that use race-conscious practices in programming, admissions, scholarships and other aspects of student life.

In New Hampshire, U.S. District Judge Landya McCafferty wrote that “the loss of federal funding would cripple the operations of many educational institutions.”

McCafferty’s order has a nationwide effect, but McCafferty limited it to schools that employ NEA members, rejecting the union’s attempt to completely halt the policies outlined in the letter.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ed.gov/media/document/dear-colleague-letter-sffa-v-harvard-109506.pdf" target="_blank">Feb. 14 letter</a>&nbsp;drew swift legal action, and the National Education Association brought the suit in New Hampshire against the administration alongside the Center for Black Educator Development.&nbsp;

The American Federation of Teachers — one of the largest teachers unions in the country — filed a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/us-department-education-sued-over-letter-race-conscious-practices-schools" target="_blank">complaint in February</a>&nbsp;alongside its affiliate, AFT-Maryland. The American Sociological Association and a public school district in Oregon also sued over the letter.

“Today the court confirmed the importance of our job as educators to foster opportunity, dignity, and engagement,” Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, said in a statement after the Maryland ruling.

“The court agreed that this vague and clearly unconstitutional requirement is a grave attack on students, our profession, honest history, and knowledge itself,” she added. “It would hamper efforts to extend access to education, and dash the promise of equal opportunity for all, a central tenet of the United States since its founding.”

NEA also celebrated the preliminary injunction granted in its case Thursday, and the union’s president, Becky Pringle, said in a statement “today’s ruling allows educators and schools to continue to be guided by what’s best for students, not by the threat of illegal restrictions and punishment.”

The statement said President Donald Trump, billionaire head of the U.S. DOGE Service Elon Musk and Education Secretary Linda McMahon were responsible for an “attack” on public education.

“The fact is that Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and Linda McMahon are using politically motivated attacks and harmful and vague directives to stifle speech and erase critical lessons to attack public education, as they work to dismantle public schools,” Pringle said. “This is why educators, parents, and community leaders are organizing, mobilizing, and using every tool available to protect our students and their futures.”

The Education Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday.

In the February letter, Trainor offered a wide-ranging interpretation of a U.S.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/us-supreme-court-strikes-down-use-affirmative-action-college-admissions" target="_blank">Supreme Court ruling in 2023</a>&nbsp;involving Harvard University and the University of North Carolina, which struck down the use of affirmative action in college admissions.

Trainor wrote that though the ruling “addressed admissions decisions, the Supreme Court’s holding applies more broadly.”

The four-page letter raised a slew of questions for schools across pre-K through college over what fell within the requirements, and the department later released a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ed.gov/media/document/frequently-asked-questions-about-racial-preferences-and-stereotypes-under-title-vi-of-civil-rights-act-109530.pdf" target="_blank">Frequently Asked Questions</a>&nbsp;document on the letter in an attempt to provide more guidance.

Earlier this month,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/states-ordered-us-education-department-certify-school-dei-ban-or-lose-funds" target="_blank">the Education Department</a>&nbsp;gave state education leaders just days to certify all K-12 schools in their states were complying with the letter in order to keep receiving federal financial assistance. Federal judges pause U.S. Education Department enforcement of DEI ban

LA CROSSE — The Kansas Barbed Wire Museum is having its 59th annual Barbed Wire Festival from Thursday through Sunday at La Crosse City Auditorium in La Crosse.&nbsp;All ages are welcome to attend even if they're not barbed wire collectors. 

Barbed wire collectors from across the country will trade, sell and buy barbed wire samples at the festival. Along with these samples, people can sell any antique, tool, military or collectible items. 

An auction for collectibles will take place on Saturday, May 3, at 3:00 p.m.&nbsp;This festival is a great opportunity to expand a current collection or start a new one.

Besides the exchange of barbed wire and other items, attendees can participate in a few other events. 

A cookout and karaoke will take place Friday at 6:30 p.m. at La Crosse Fire District #4. This event is free, but donations are welcomed and will be used for museum education as well as supporting the annual “Old Fashioned Christmas.” Those who choose to participate in karaoke have a chance of winning a prize. 

Home-cooked concessions will be available both Friday and Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

&nbsp;On&nbsp;Saturday at 10:00 a.m. the World Champion Barbed Wire Splicing Contest has youth, women’s, and men’s categories. The winners from each category will receive a prize. 

A Midnight Masquerade Banquet will also be held Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Walnut Valley Senior Center in Rush Center. A $20 reservation is required per person and ensures dinner, live music, entertainment and an awards ceremony. Tickets are limited, so call&nbsp;as soon as possible. 

A church service and picnic will occur Sunday, at 11:00 a.m. at Grass Park Museum Complex, and it is open to anyone.&nbsp;

 </figure>Rush County Economic DevelopmentLA CROSSE — The Kansas Barbed Wire Museum is having its 59th annual Barbed Wire Festival from Thursday through Sunday at La Crosse City Auditorium in La Crosse.&nbsp;All ages are welcome to attend even if they're not barbed wire collectors. Barbed wire collectors from across the country will trade, sell and buy barbed wire samples at the festival. Along with these samples, people can sell any antique, tool, military or collectible items. An auction for collectibles will take place on Saturday, May 3, at 3:00 p.m.&nbsp;This festival is a great opportunity to expand a current collection or start a new one.Besides the exchange of barbed wire and other items, attendees can participate in a few other events. A cookout and karaoke will take place Friday at 6:30 p.m. at La Crosse Fire District #4. This event is free, but donations are welcomed and will be used for museum education as well as supporting the annual “Old Fashioned Christmas.” Those who choose to participate in karaoke have a chance of winning a prize. Home-cooked concessions will be available both Friday and Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.&nbsp;On&nbsp;Saturday at 10:00 a.m. the World Champion Barbed Wire Splicing Contest has youth, women’s, and men’s categories. The winners from each category will receive a prize. A Midnight Masquerade Banquet will also be held Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Walnut Valley Senior Center in Rush Center. A $20 reservation is required per person and ensures dinner, live music, entertainment and an awards ceremony. Tickets are limited, so call&nbsp;as soon as possible. The state of Kansas has changed the accreditation process for Kansas schools, and Hays USD 489 schools have announced new goals for improvement.

Accreditation is transitioning from a five-year cycle to a one-year cycle, said Shanna Dinkel, assistant superintendent and director of curriculum.

The accreditation is split into three sections: compliance, outcomes and improvements.

Compliance covers items such as the number of school days and school nutrition programs—requirements that all schools must meet.

Outcomes have been narrowed to include math and English student assessment scores, graduation rate and postsecondary success. All three of these measures were also part of the former accreditation system.

Post-secondary success is the number of students who have received post-secondary degrees or accreditation, or are enrolled in post-secondary education two years after graduation. It does not include students who enter the workforce or military directly after high school.

Assessments are completed in the spring, so the data for the 2024-25 school year has not been released.

The assessments are based on scores ranging from one to four. • Level one indicates students demonstrate a limited ability to understand the material. • Level two&nbsp;indicates students demonstrate a basic ability to understand the material. • Level three indicates students demonstrate effective skills to understand the material. • Level four&nbsp;indicates students demonstrate an excellent ability to understand the material.

In 2023 and 2024, USD 489 had fewer students in the lowest level for English and math, but had slightly higher percentages of students in level two compared to the state average.

Dinkel said the district will emphasize math improvement during the coming school year. The district's math scores for all students have decreased since the pandemic. The district has had more students scoring in level one and fewer in levels three and four, Dinkel said.

"The gap is a little tighter than we want it to be," Dinkel said of the district's scores compared to the state averages.

The district plans for English improvement projects at a later date, she said.

Hays USD 489 exceeded the state graduation rate in 2023 and 2024, with a 89.6% graduation rate in 2023 and a 93.5% graduation rate in 2024.

The district's post-secondary success rate has declined during the last two years. These would be students who graduated in 2021 and 2022 and were affected by pandemic remote learning.

The school districts have been planning their improvement projects this year. They will implement the plans in the 2025-26 school year, and the state will assess how those plans have affected outcomes in the 2026-27 school year.

The Kansas Department of Education has yet to establish benchmarks that school districts must meet to achieve accreditation, Dinkel said.

Dinkel said the district is working to align its curriculum with test standards and better coordinate collaboration among teachers.

"We want to make sure we're looking at the data and having the right conversations to make sure it impacts students at the desk level so our students are better prepared for those state assessments," Dinkel said.

Each school also has a distinct improvement plan based on the needs of its students, Dinkel said.

They are as follows: • Hays High School: Promoting student responsibility by expanding staff capacity in classroom management and relationship-building practices.

• Hays Middle School: Students will show improvement in course grades. • Roosevelt Elementary School:&nbsp;Targeted Tier 1 instruction in the area of behavior and social/emotional learning.

• O'Loughlin Elementary School:&nbsp;By spring 2025, at least 92% of O’Loughlin students will show modest, typical or aggressive overall reading growth as measured by FastBridge.

• Wilson Elementary School:&nbsp;Focus on grade-level learners in Numbers and Operations in Base Ten standards K-5.

• Early Childhood Connections: Increase self-control of feelings and behavior, phonological awareness, and letter and word knowledge to 80%.

Dinkel said the schools will periodically check their progress toward their goals throughout the school year.

&nbsp;The district offers a parent feedback survey in the spring, but Dinkel encourages parents to provide their thoughts throughout the year.

"The more families who provide feedback, the better, because that helps us identify where we are falling short from the parents' perspective," Dinkel said.&nbsp;"We can think we're doing a great job, but we really need to hear ways we can support [students]."

Based on parent feedback, the middle school changed to the Rooms app, which allows parents and teachers to communicate through text messages.

Dinkel said parents can also assist their students by offering homework help and establishing routines that set aside time for homework.&nbsp;

Check your students' grades on PowerSchool and then visit with them on how school is going, Dinkel suggested.

Parents can also become involved through home and school organizations and school site councils.

Hays USD 489 to focus on math under new state accreditation system

WASHINGTON — KSDS Assistance Dogs, Inc. is proud to announce the graduation of Teresa McComb and her facility dog, Buster, a gentle and easy-going black Labrador Retriever. Buster has officially joined the staff at Logan Manor in Logan, where McComb serves as the administrator.

 With his calm demeanor and affectionate personality, Buster has already become a beloved member of the Logan Manor family. Trained as a facility dog through KSDS’s rigorous, 1,000+ hour certification program, Buster will accompany McComb to work each day, greeting residents and lifting spirits with every wag of his tail. 

“I waited 10 years for the right facility dog,” McComb shared. “I even tried raising my own puppy for the job, but he was too high energy. Buster is different—he's mellow, patient, and reminds me every day to slow down and enjoy the moment. The trainers at KSDS are truly the best—so encouraging and kind.” 

Logan, a close-knit farming community where neighbors support one another, has recently completed the LIFE Center, an intergenerational hub connecting Logan Manor residents with local pre-K to 4th grade students. Buster will play a unique role in this program, visiting with both children and elderly residents as a source of comfort and joy. 

“Many of our residents had dogs at home before coming here. Buster fills a void in their hearts,” McComb said. “He’s not just part of our staff—he’s part of our family.” 

Buster was lovingly raised by volunteer puppy raiser Lynn Bagby of Adrian, Missouri, who helped prepare him for his future as a facility dog. “Deep down, early on, I had a feeling that Buster was meant for something special. Not flashy or bold, but deeply connected to people's hearts,” said Bagby. “He was always so attuned to emotions, quietly grounding me or my students when we needed a moment to catch our breath or reset. He didn't need words. Just his presence was enough.”

 Thanks to the incredible network of KSDS volunteers and trainers, facility dogs like Buster are expertly trained to offer emotional support and professional enhancement at no cost to recipients—aside from a small application fee. 

KSDS Assistance Dogs, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, has placed over 650 assistance dog teams in 37 states since its founding in 1990. As the first organization in the U.S. to offer both guide and service dog programs under one roof, KSDS has been an accredited member of Assistance Dogs International (ADI) since 2003 and continues to lead the way in setting industry standards.

Woman, assistance dog brings joy, comfort to Logan Manor 

For nine years I lived within five miles of the Pacific Ocean. I breathed its salt air, I lived for invigorating breezes that freshened every morning and evening. As often as I could, I stood with toes in foaming water and looked West into forever. Standing there, I saw infinity roll away and then roll back on the white wash of one returning wave after another. I thought I could never live anywhere I couldn’t see and hear the continual rising and falling of the sea.

It wasn’t long after I paused at the Pacific’s edge that last time, wondering how I could survive away from it that I discovered the answer to my question. After my family moved to Oklahoma, I reeled and foundered, trying to adjust and find a way to part from the ocean I loved.

For months, I clung to memories, sniffed bags filled with seaweed scented shells, and listened to audio tapes that replicated the sea’s pounding thunder. 

After a spell, I began to look around. A college friend lived in a balcony apartment overlooking a wheat field. One day I sat on the porch and watched wind move through a ripening wheat field. Those of you who’ve done the same know what I saw. An ocean, a swelling and falling ocean of grain rolling over the prairie. Once again I watched infinite waves roll in, one right after the other. My fascination with the scene before me puzzled this friend who’d grown up on a farm. However, former dwellers of a land near the sea recognize what I found that day.

Years later, more by far than I ever spent living near the ocean, I still miss watching rising and falling foam-capped grey-green water. I miss the tides, the waxing and waning of water and land. I miss the ocean’s roar, the feel of salt-tang wind against my face, the discovery of delicate shells beneath my feet.

But I no longer miss them too much. I discovered I live in an ancient sea bed. I find shells in pastures, limestone rocks, on roadsides, and on hillsides near my home. I find ammonite and clam imprints in the thousands of limestone posts fencing this region. Even better, I found the sea again.

Walking country roads of Kansas, I need listen only a short while before I hear the echo of ancient waves carried on the wind. When I stand on a hill overlooking somebody’s wheat field, I imagine myself perched at the edge of infinity listening to a roaring tide pour in. Nearby, wave after wave of rolling wheat reminds me that eons ago, this land where I now stand teemed with sea creatures great and small.

As I walk face first into the wind, I hear an ocean within as my own blood pounds and pulses in tune to the clamor without. This one-time child of the Pacific stands rooted in another ancient seabed, feeling eternity throb on a Kansas hillside.

The Hays Symphony Orchestra will conclude its 2024-2025 season with "Romantic Visions" at 7:30 p.m. May 3, at the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center, 600 Park St.

<a target="_blank" href="http://www.hayssymphony.org/"></a>The concert will feature pianist Irena Ravitskaya performing Edvard Grieg's Piano Concerto in A minor.

Ravitskaya, who regularly performs in international venues, is a member of the faculty at Fort Hays State University and frequently collaborates with orchestras across the country.

The concert program also includes Douglas Lilburn's Concert Overture in D and Robert Schumann's Symphony No. 1, known as the "Spring Symphony." Together, the selections represent key works from the Romantic period and offer a diverse listening experience for concertgoers.

"We are excited to present this final concert to the community," said Brian Buckstead, director of the Hays Symphony. "The selections highlight significant works from the Romantic era and showcase the talents of both our orchestra and soloist. I believe this program will appeal to a wide audience, whether you're a long-time classical music supporter or attending your first symphony concert."

Sandy Jacobs, president of the Hays Symphony Guild, emphasized the accessibility of the event. "Our mission is to ensure that classical music remains accessible to all members of our community," Jacobs said. "With the generous support of our sponsors, we're able to offer this concert free of charge and invite residents from across the region to experience the power of live orchestral music."

Hays Symphony Orchestra concludes season with free concert Saturday

TOPEKA&nbsp;– Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) Secretary Christopher Kennedy has issued orders designating several Free Fishing and Free State Park Entrance days. The announcement was made at the April 24, 2025, Kansas Wildlife and Parks Commission meeting.

The Free Fishing Days are June 7 and 8, 2025. On those days, anyone can fish by legal means without a Kansas fishing license. All length and creel limits still apply.

All Kansas State Parks will also offer free entrance on Saturday, May 3. Camping fees still apply.

“I encourage everyone to take advantage of these opportunities to enjoy Kansas’ incredible natural resources,” said Kennedy. “Whether you're casting a line, hiking a trail, picnicking on a beach, or simply taking in the beauty of nature, these days are meant to inspire connection with your family, friends, and the great outdoors.”

Along with these statewide events, Secretary Kennedy has also designated several park-specific Free Entrance Days that align with local events and programs designed to engage families, outdoor enthusiasts, and newcomers to Kansas state parks.

Free fishing, state park entrance days for 2025 announced by Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks

TOPEKA — Fear that federal funding cuts will mean loved ones won’t receive nutritional food and safety checks through Meals on Wheels is driving an increase of calls to agencies across Kansas.

“It’s scary,” said Laurel Alkire, executive director of Senior Services Inc. of Wichita. “I’ve had a lot of families call me about their mom or dad. We’re trying to not overreact, but it’s very concerning.”

The fear is generated by potential federal funding cuts from multiple sources that could affect Meals on Wheels budgets nationwide, said Josh Protas, an advocate at the organization’s national office, Meals on Wheels America.&nbsp;

“I think there’s a lot of confusion and a lot of anxiety that we’re hearing from across our network that is in response to multiple threats that are happening all at once,” he said.

Programs facing federal cuts include those funded by Health and Human Services, which has faced “massive” cuts of budget and personnel, Protas said. A leaked budget document signaled intentions to cut and split apart some programs that serve older adults.&nbsp;

Also of concern is the ongoing budget reconciliation process, which among other things may include elimination of social services block grants and cuts to the Older Americans Act, he said.&nbsp;

“Social Services Block Grants are a critical source of funding for many Meals on Wheels programs to help fill in the gaps where there are shortfalls in other funding sources,” Protas said.&nbsp;

Proposed cuts to Medicaid also could harm Meals on Wheels budgets because those funds sometimes offer reimbursements, he said.&nbsp;

Isys Schmitt, director of nutrition at the Hays-based Northwest Kansas Area Agency on Aging, said her agency serves 18 counties at 28 sites in northwest Kansas.&nbsp;

“I do hear the concerns from participants,” she said. “I think it’s more they hear these things on the news, and they automatically think it’s going to affect our program very badly.”

Her agency receives about 25% of its funding from federal sources, 25% from the state, and the rest in contributions, Schmitt said.&nbsp;

Protas said Meals on Wheels programs are all funded through different mechanisms, so it’s difficult to tell how cuts might affect each program. Some get almost no federal funding, while others may receive 80% of funds from federal sources.

Julie Govert Walter, executive director of the North Central-Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging Inc., is assessing potential cuts and trying to plan for how her agency might be affected, including the Meals on Wheels program it runs.&nbsp;

“We’re right now telling people don’t panic,” she said. “We don’t want our elder Kansans to stress out over the uncertainty. At the same time, we want lawmakers in Washington to understand that the Older Americans Act programs are making significant differences in the lives of older Kansans and their caregivers and their families.”

About half of Walter’s agency budget is derived from the Older Americans Act, with about 34% of the allocation and related in-kind match donations supporting the meals program in 18 northeast Kansas counties.

Alkire said that Wichita’s Senior Services has other programs besides Meals on Wheels, including a senior employment program and four senior centers for active seniors 55 and older.&nbsp;

“Meals on Wheels is our bread and butter,” she said. “We’ve got some reserves, but that wouldn’t last long.”

Walter said she believes the programs her organization runs are aligned with Trump administration policies because they’re frugal, cost-conscious and have significant volunteer support. In addition, Meals on Wheels helps seniors live independently, which often keeps them out of more costly nursing home facilities.&nbsp;

Protas said the national organization is walking the line of not scaring seniors about funding cuts but making sure people are reaching out to make their voices heard.

“Many of these things that we’re worried about, there haven’t been final decisions made yet,” he said. “So we’re using this time to advocate and to just tell the story about Meals on Wheels. We’re advising our Meals on Wheels member programs to do some contingency planning so that in the event that there are delays or disruptions in funding, they’re not caught off guard. We’re not doing that in a way that instills panic, but we recognize that the threats are serious.”

Walter said planning right now is tough because of political uncertainties, but even more so because she doesn’t have information from the feds that she needs. Usually by this time of year, she knows what her budget is for the upcoming year. She doesn’t have those numbers yet to plan for fiscal year 2026, which will start in October.&nbsp;

In mid-March, Congress funded the Older Americans Act and other programs through September 2025 with a continuing resolution. But no one knows what will happen next, Walter said. When she considers potential cuts of up to 30% of her agency’s funding, she’s not sure how to think about what actions to take.&nbsp;

Options could include cutting the number of days they serve meals from five to two or three, but that would involve potential workforce cuts, she said.&nbsp;

“It’s a puzzle,” she said. “We’re doing what we can to communicate with members of Congress about our situation, and I will say I think most members of the Kansas congressional delegation understand the importance of the OAA.”

Walter said one of the biggest challenges is communicating with people about the importance of Meals on Wheels and other programs for aging Kansans.&nbsp;

“We all know what it’s like to be a kid, to be an adolescent, to be a young adult, and to be in middle age,” she said. “But honestly, most people don’t get what it’s like to really deal with challenges and the anxieties of being older, 75 and 80 plus, until we’re there. It’s so dependent on health and community and social relationships.”

“The stress and uncertainty is real, and it has real effects on people’s minds and hearts and spirits,” Walter said. “It’s hard to quantify, but you know it’s real. Drama is not good for older people.”

Rock Against Rape is an event established as a safe night out that seeks to spread powerful messages about sexual violence.

Seventh St. Anniston Weber, Options victim advocate and campus outreach coordinator, said the night is designed for those who want to have fun without facing added risks."I wanted to create a safe space for people to go out, have a good time, have a drink if they want to and not expect to be sexually assaulted," she said.The event is inspired by Hays' vibrant music scene and the desire to involve more community members in discussions about sexual violence.The line up for Rock Against Rape features local and regional artists such as Isekai, Free Minded, Parl, Left in a Ditch and Harbingers.Options Executive Director Jennifer Hecker said Rock Against Rape is open to everyone, but the goal is to draw young adults who are disproportionately affected."Pervasively, college-age students are most likely to experience sexual assault," Hecker said. "We scheduled it right at the end of the year, so it's a great way to blow off some steam."Options will also have flyers, brochures and staff on-site to promote the nonprofit’s free and confidential services. Advocates will deliver brief messages and share statistics between band sets to reinforce the event’s message.Alcohol will be served at the event, but measures are in place to ensure safety and responsible drinking. Weber references the Safe Bar training program offered by Options."Bartenders take this training and they learn to spot the signs of sexual violence, domestic violence, looking out for people who might be slipping drugs into drinks and how to know if you might be over-serving someone," Weber said.Options and <a href="https://www.janascampaign.org/">Jana’s Campaign</a> are pushing to make sexual violence education mandatory for bar owners after a survey showed more than 40% of Ellis County respondents reported having sex while too intoxicated to consent.<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/1d86f25f-1de2-4992-b48f-f4bb8c275751">SEE RELATED STORY: Advocates to campaign for sexual violence education for Ellis County bar owners, managers</a>Hecker encourages people to refer those in need to services like Options and to speak up if they see inappropriate behavior.
