A lack of contested races is being blamed for the low voter
turnout in Tuesday’s Ellis County primary election.

According to the Ellis County Clerk Bobbi Dreiling, the
unofficial voter turnout was 8.9%. 

Only 1,782 ballots were cast out of the more than 19,900 registered voters in Ellis County. About 20 provisional ballots will be reviewed as part of the canvass later this month.

“There were no contested races other than on the Republican ballot. The U.S. House of Representatives did have a contested race. There was a
township contested race. Other than that, everybody else was going unopposed
and will move forward onto the general,” Dreiling said. “So, I contribute that
to a low voter turnout.”

In the 2022 primary, voter turnout was almost 50%, with more
than 9,600 ballots cast. But the ballot also contained the proposed state
constitutional amendment&nbsp;regarding the right to abortion.

Between 2010 and 2020, voter turnout in Ellis County ranged between
37.9% in 2020 and 17.6 in 2014. The average voter turnout over those six primary
elections was 25.25% in Ellis County.

Dreiling said there were more contested races in past
years' primary elections than this year.

Counties across the state also appeared to suffer low voter
turnout.

In 2024, voter turnout in Ford County was 8.2%, Sedgwick County 9.9%, Saline County 16.5% and Barton County 20%.

Dreiling said her office will continue to offer expanded voter
access, including a second Saturday when the election office is open for
advanced voting. 

Only 10 people cast an advanced ballot on Saturday for the Presidential Preference Primary, and 12 voters cast a ballot in advance on Saturday for this primary.


Dreiling said they will continue offering a Saturday advance
voting opportunity in the future, and she hopes it will catch on.

“That’s my hope, that if I keep on advertising it and
letting people know that Saturday is available for them, hopefully, that will also drive my Fort Hays State students to come vote on Saturdays as
well,” Dreiling said.

Ellis County primary election voter turnover lowest in more than a decade

Welcome rain overnight Wednesday into early Thursday in Hays.

The official amount as measured at the K-State Agricultural Research Center south of town was 0.65 of an inch.

At the Eagle Media Center, 2300 Hall Street, 0.95 was measured.

The average total for the month of August in Hays is 3.01 inches.&nbsp;

The annual total accumulation of moisture through August is 17.70 inches. As of August 8, Hays has received 15.31 inches of precipitation for the year.

More chances of rain and considerably cooler temperatures are in the <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/2de10b40-c9b1-40f0-9b9f-ea6ad4432de5">three-day forecast</a> with highs in the 70s.

Overnight rain brings cooler temperatures to Hays

I want to address the issue of misinformation, particularly in response to recent statements from Ellis County Clerk, Bobbi Dreiling, via her official candidate Facebook page. She criticized my remarks regarding a recent event where I mentioned misprinted ballots sent out by the clerk's office in a past election.

Ms. Dreiling pointed out that I said "in the last election," referring to the 2024 Presidential Primary when no misprinted ballots were reported.

Let's clarify: in 2020, when Ms. Dreiling was Deputy Clerk, 3,800 misprinted ballots were indeed sent out. This included a Kansas Legislative race mistakenly labeled as a U.S. Senate Race, prompting a three-day halt to absentee voting and necessitating ballot reprinting. 

Additionally, a recent incident during the Hays USD 489 school bond election saw two voters receiving incorrect ballots due to human error in the Ellis County Clerk's office.

The accuracy of the words used doesn't change the fact that these incidents occurred. 

Moving to the 2024 Presidential Primary, voter turnout in Ellis County was shockingly low at just 6.42%, with less than 1,300 ballots cast.

Regardless of differing reports on voter turnout percentages between 2018 and 2022—whether it's an 8% decrease reported by the ACLU or the 4.5% decrease cited by Ms. Dreiling's office—any decline is unacceptable to me.

Polling place closures, removal of ballot boxes and the decision not to allow voting on FHSU's campus further compound accessibility issues. As someone who votes in the district affected by these changes, I'm disappointed that such decisions were made without consulting actual residents, particularly young adults whose voting rights deserve encouragement and support.

Discussing the removal of ballot boxes in Ellis and Victoria, cost concerns were raised, emphasizing the expense of transportation. While fiscal responsibility is important, prioritizing cost savings over voting accessibility shouldn't be the primary consideration. Similarly, staff convenience in checking ballot boxes should not outweigh the need for accessible voting options.

Regarding misinformation, I've corrected misleading guidance from the Deputy Clerk who wrongly advised people with felonies that they couldn't vote.

<a href="https://sos.ks.gov/elections/register-to-vote-felony.html">Editor's note:&nbsp;Individuals convicted of a felony cannot vote until they have completed the terms of their sentence - while in prison, on parole, or probation.&nbsp;Voting rights are restored upon completion of the terms of the felony sentence, including all supervised release. Registration is not automatic - the ex-offender must act to register to vote, according to Kansas Secretary of State's office.</a>

This wasn't just a semantic issue—it directly impacted voters' rights and required correction. In the last election, I ran as a write-in candidate despite the odds, driven by my belief that every election should provide a genuine choice.

Disappointed by the turnout and representation, I'm running again because I see little improvement in our electoral process.Every registered voter deserves a voice.

As an Elections Officer, I'm committed to hearing and supporting all voices, regardless of political affiliation or background.

Let's ensure the electoral process remains accessible and fair for everyone—Republicans, Democrats, Independents, students, and lifelong residents alike.

LETTER: Democratic Ellis County clerk candidate critical of current clerk

Six thousand rubber ducks raced for $10,000 at the ninth-annual Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ellis County Duck Derby Wednesday at the Hays Aquatic Park.

The winners of the grand prize and nine other prizes were announced Wednesday, but the names of the winners will not be released for publication until the winners are notified today.

Area businesses also donated prizes for children with 1,000 ducks racing in the children's Duck Dash contest.

In addition to the duck races, the event featured the Forward Ever cardboard boat regatta, which was won for the second year in a row by Werth Wealth Management. They win the right to name the race again next year.

The High Plains Baptist Church took second, and the Hays Water Resources Department took third. Bethesda Place took home the Titanic Award after its boat sank upon launch.

The Hays Water Resources Department won the Spirit Award, and Cloud Storage won Best in Show with their shark boat. Cloud Storage managed to finish the race despite breaking a paddle.

Each year, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ellis County serves more than 200 children. They currently have 150 matches with individuals or families who provide support and mentorship.

Forty-five children are on the Big Brothers Big Sisters waiting list in Ellis County.

The organization is seeking both community-based and school-based volunteers.

VICTORIA —&nbsp;What started as a one-day retail business sidewalk sale 41 years ago has grown into a two-day family-oriented community festival in Victoria, honoring its German heritage.

The annual Herzogfest set for Friday and Saturday on Victoria's Main Street, is one of the largest free celebrations in western Kansas.&nbsp;

In keeping with the German theme, the Herzogfest will include a polka Mass at 4 p.m. Saturday, followed by a polka dance with traditional polka music and German songs.

"We try to have that for our older generations and keep it going for our younger folks," said Brenton Hoffman, Herzogfest president. "We have some really good singers."

There'll also be plenty of German food to enjoy at the Heritage Marketplace, which opens at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Other food varieties will be offered by vendors, food trucks, and non-profit groups.&nbsp;

A special beer brewed at Defiance Brewing Co. in Hays will available for purchase. "The Zog," a German pilsner, made its first appearance last year in honor of the festival's 40th year.&nbsp;

Friday afternoon's Zog Olympics features beer-involved games of skills with two-person teams.

Horseshoes competition opens up the evening events at 6 p.m.

Concerts will be performed at 7 p.m. Friday by Texas artist Parker Ryan, followed by rock group Gannon Fremin &amp; CCREV at 9 p.m.

Saturday morning kicks off bright and early with a 5K run/walk kicks off at 8 a.m.

The Herzog Hot Rods, Car, Truck &amp; Tractor show starts at 10 a.m.&nbsp;

Other Saturday activities include children's music performer Jammin' Randy, pictures with Clifford the Big Red Dog, 3 on 3 basketball at the Victoria Elementary School, valve cover races, cornhole tournament, bingo at the Victoria VFW, and free swimming at the city pool from 1 to 4 p.m.

Stein hoist contests will be held for kids and adults, with water glasses for the kids and beer steins for the grownups. "No spilling allowed," Hoffman said.

The regional favorite Wes Cossman Band takes the stage at 7 p.m. and then the country/rock Huser Brother Band at 9 p.m.

Fifty/fifty cash raffles will precede the late concerts both nights.

"We try to have that for our older generations and keep it going for our younger folks," said Brenton Hoffman, Herzogfest president. "We have some really good singers."There'll also be plenty of German food to enjoy at the Heritage Marketplace, which opens at 9 a.m. on Saturday.Other food varieties will be offered by vendors, food trucks, and non-profit groups.&nbsp;A special beer brewed at Defiance Brewing Co. in Hays will available for purchase. "The Zog," a German pilsner, made its first appearance last year in honor of the festival's 40th year.&nbsp;Friday afternoon's Zog Olympics features beer-involved games of skills with two-person teams.Horseshoes competition opens up the evening events at 6 p.m.Concerts will be performed at 7 p.m. Friday by Texas artist Parker Ryan, followed by rock group Gannon Fremin &amp; CCREV at 9 p.m.Saturday morning kicks off bright and early with a 5K run/walk kicks off at 8 a.m.The Herzog Hot Rods, Car, Truck &amp; Tractor show starts at 10 a.m.&nbsp;Other Saturday activities include children's music performer Jammin' Randy, pictures with Clifford the Big Red Dog, 3 on 3 basketball at the Victoria Elementary School, valve cover races, cornhole tournament, bingo at the Victoria VFW, and free swimming at the city pool from 1 to 4 p.m.Stein hoist contests will be held for kids and adults, with water glasses for the kids and beer steins for the grownups. "No spilling allowed," Hoffman said.The regional favorite Wes Cossman Band takes the stage at 7 p.m. and then the country/rock Huser Brother Band at 9 p.m.Fifty/fifty cash raffles will precede the late concerts both nights.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2013 BMW motorcycle driven by Alan E.&nbsp;Gantert, 80, Freeville, New York, was eastbound on U.S. 36 one and one half miles west of U.S. 283.

The motorcycle struck the passenger side tires of a 1999 Mack semi driven by&nbsp;Bowman, Robert W. Bowman, 78, Norton, who was making a left turn from U.S. 36 onto Norton County Road W1.

EMS transported&nbsp; Gantert to&nbsp; Kearney Regional Hospital where he died. Bowman was not injured. Gantert was not wearing a helmet, according to the KHP.

A short agenda is on tap for Thursday's Hays City Commission meeting.

The two items involve expansion by Lewis Auto Group north of Interstate 70.

JTL Leasing (Lewis Auto Group) has purchased two tracts near the intersection of East 41st Street and Sherman Avenue.&nbsp;

Lewis plans to use the existing building at 655 E. 41st St., formerly Vernie’s Toys 4 Trux, as a mechanic/service shop and build a structure in the vacant lot across the street to the west.&nbsp;

The properties are just outside the current city limits.&nbsp;

JTL has requested rezoning of the two tracts from general commercial to light industrial and annexation into the city.&nbsp;

Both items have been previously approved by the Hays Area Planning Commission.

If W.B. Yeats words, “Education is not the filling of a pot but the lighting of the fire,” then a score of house finches lit the match that led me to discover fascinating facts about our corn patch. Nature offers intriguing lessons when we inquire.

Instruction began as our corn tasseled a few weeks ago. Scores of house finches descended on fresh tassels, nibbling and tugging at serrated edges that distribute pollen. Flocks returned morning and evening to gorge on their tasty treat. Their behavior triggered me to research why wild finches crave corn pollen.

While I didn’t find an answer to that question, the search led to a world of discovery for me. Every day, I watch pollinators zip from one blossom to another in our garden, delivering essential DNA info to pumpkins, tomatoes, cantaloupe, zucchinis, cucumbers, potatoes, and flowers. Amazingly I never wondered how corn fertilized. Those feisty finches and their stellar teaching technique remedied that lack of curiosity.

Thank goodness we live in an age where an inquisitive mind can retrieve info with the click of a computer key. After several days of wondering why tiny birds kept returning to nibble our corn tassels, I googled answers.

The first hour led down multiple bunny trails, none of which addressed my question. However, it did direct me to sites that explain corn pollination and how it differs from other plants. Of course, I now have more questions, but cold weather arrives soon with time to explore when outside weather isn’t calling my name.

Unfortunately, I found no satisfaction regarding finches eating pollen other than they eat seeds. Dangly parts on corn tassels resemble seeds. What I did learn was that corn’s widely separated male and female reproductive parts that typically depend on wind transfer of pollen to ovule differ from most other plants.

As you check your own corn or drive about the countryside examining cornfields, consider a plant that humans began manipulating thousands of years ago. What is now a tall plant with a thick stalk originated much smaller with fewer seeds to either eat or plant.

Now, hybridized tall, thick stems commonly produce one to two ears containing up to 1000 ovules. Corn kernels result from the 400 to 700 that successfully fertilize, leading me to wonder how many ears does the Green Giant require to fill a 16 oz. can? The real miracle involves transferring pollen from those tassels rising feet above ovules enclosed in a husk.

I always wondered why corn has inedible silks. Think back to grade school science and plant pollination. Silks sprout out of each ovary on each ear and serve as stigma and style of female blossoms. That frothy eruption of fine strands delivers pollen that blows, falls, or gets shaken off by hungry finches onto an individual silk which then transports it to an ovary where it turns into a corn kernel. Interestingly, I learned that once pollen delivery takes place, silks detach. In theory, humans can test nature’s success by gently tugging those fibers days before they harvest corn.

Before this investigation, growing and processing corn offered enjoyable means to produce a favorite food. As a bonus, we liked watching it grow and attract birds to the garden. Now that I know more, I’m impressed with one more of the many ways the Good Lord has of making sure His creatures eat well.

Republican Jason Krug won against Todd Schneider with 184 votes to 140 for Russell County Commissioner District 2. Democrat Brad Zweifel ran unopposed in the primary.

Incumbent Republican Duke Strobel defeated Teresa Brandenburg with 138 votes to 82 for Russell County Commissioner District 3. Democrat Charmarose Craven ran unopposed.

Republican Dean Haselhorst defeated candidate John Fletcher, who passed away in June, with 184 votes to 71 for County Commissioner District 4. Democrat Neil Unrein ran unopposed.

Republican Alan Kuntzsch is ahead by a single vote with 87 votes, while Anthony Mahoney received 86 votes for County Commissioner District 5. The election will be official after the Russell County canvas.

 Kevin Mravinec received 64 votes, Mitch Driscoll had 60 votes, and Jamie Gage had 24 votes. Democrat Tom Mahoney ran unopposed.

Candidate Gage has a history of misdemeanors and said her promotional materials, including yard signs and large banners, have allegedly been stolen or defaced in the lead-up to the election.

Military families move regularly, sometimes every two to three years. So you may find yourself checking out new digs as you plan a move to another duty station. That’s when you could run into a rental scam, which can be hard to spot, but here are some clues.

Rental listing scams can unfold in a few ways. Scammers can steal legitimate rental listings for real places and pretend to be the landlord. Sometimes scammers use social media groups to post made-up listings for places that aren’t actually available to rent — and sometimes for place that don’t even exist.&nbsp;In either case, the scammer will rush you into paying an application fee, deposit, and/or first month’s rent,&nbsp;and promise to get you the keys right away — but instead, they’ll disappear.&nbsp;You’ll be left without your money and with no place to move into.

Take these steps to avoid losing time and money to a rental listing scam.

If it isn’t, the listing is likely a scam.</li><li>Pay by credit card, which gives you the best protections. Scammers want you to pay in ways that make it hard to get your money back — like&nbsp;with&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/avoiding-and-reporting-gift-card-scams">gift cards</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/you-wire-money">wire transfers</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/mobile-payment-apps-how-avoid-scam-when-you-use-one">payment apps</a>&nbsp;like Apple Pay, CashApp, PayPal and Zelle, or&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/what-know-about-cryptocurrency-and-scams">cryptocurrency</a>. &nbsp;</li><li>Don’t pay for a property you’ve never seen.&nbsp;And never pay someone you’ve never met in person. If you can’t see the apartment or sign a lease before you pay, see if a friend can see it for you, or keep looking.</li>

Avoiding rental listing scams

A Hays man was arrested on July 29 on several charges related to child pornography through social media.

According to court records, suspect 21-year-old Josiah Curtis Grizzle of Hays was arrested on charges including alleged aggravated internet trading in child pornography, sexual exploitation of a child, possession of media involving a child younger than 18 years old, and sexual extortion.

According to the court records, the alleged victim was born in 2007 and would be 16 or 17 years old.

The child pornography counts allegedly occurred in February and March on Snapchat and Facebook (Meta). According to court records, the sexual extortion offense allegedly occurred on July 29.

In 2021, Grizzle was arrested for aggravated endangerment of a child younger than 18 years old, interference with law enforcement for fleeing or attempting to elude through reckless driving, possession of THC and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He pleaded no contest to charges of aggravated endangerment of a child and interference with law enforcement. He pleaded guilty of a second count of aggravated endangerment of a child and interference with law enforcement.

The charges for possession of THC and possession of drug paraphernalia were dismissed.

Grizzle was placed in community corrections in January 2022 and released a year later.

The Hays Police Department was contacted but did not release a statement.

All parties are innocent until proven guilty.

🎙 Downtown Hays Farmers Market voted No. 1 in Kansas for 2nd year  

Trinity Lutheran Church, 2703 Fort St., will host a women’s conference Saturday, Aug. 24, whose keynote speaker address the topic of sexual exploitation.

The one-day conference will also feature a style show presented by Simply Charmed, a store in downtown Hays owned by Sarah Cearley-Windholz.

Registration for the Western Conference of Central States Women of the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church of America) is $10, which includes lunch.

Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. the day of the event, with a welcome at 10 a.m. Speaking will be Heidi Olson of Kansas City, Mo.

Olson is a certified pediatric nurse and certified pediatric sexual assault nurse practitioner.

According to her website, she “has a wide range of experience in pediatric and forensic nursing” and managed the sexual assault nurse examiner program at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City for eight years.

Olson has served as an expert witness for the prosecution during trials for victims of sexual assault. She organized Empower KC, a community event to raise awareness about sexual exploitation in Kansas City. She has testified in favor of bills that have been passed into law on the state level and recently testified at a briefing on Capitol Hill about protecting children online.

She has presented in the U.S. and internationally about recognizing human trafficking, child-on-child sexual assault, pornography, and exploitation.

In May 2022, Olson founded Paradigm Shift Training and Consulting in Kansas City, Mo., a firm that helps train hospital personnel to identify and help sexual assault victims.

On her website, she said that her mission at Paradigm Shift “is to provide healthcare workers with the necessary skills and training to identify human trafficking and exploitation.”

In 2023 Olson won the “Cry Purple Award,” which is given to citizens who are doing “outstanding anti-trafficking work in their communities.”

Susan Schonthaler, one of the conference organizers, said Olson spoke this past spring at Hays Medical Center to healthcare workers about sex trafficking. “That’s when I heard about her and thought she would be a good conference speaker for us,” Schonthaler said. “People don’t realize what a problem we have with sex trafficking even in this part of the state.”

Schonthaler said the conference is open to any women, not just Lutheran women, but reservations are mandatory so that adequate food may be prepared.

Each year the United States Breastfeeding Committee (USBC) requests a Congressional Proclamation to declare August as National Breastfeeding Month in the United States. In 2021, the USBC piloted a toolkit that individuals could use to urge their governor to proclaim August as "Breastfeeding Month" in their state or territory. Kansas has joined the list! Governor Kelly signed the proclamation for Kansas on July 29, 2024. The theme this year is “Nourish, Sustain, Thrive”

Most of us have heard about how breastfeeding positively affects the health of infants and toddlers. Breastfeeding also positively impacts families financially as well as the environment. However, many have not heard about the positive impacts on a mother’s health. Women who breastfeed their children lower their risk of breast cancer. According to an epidemiological study published in the The Lancet, breastfeeding is dose specific. For every 12 months of breastfeeding, the risk of breast cancer goes down by 4.3%. This can be for one child or a combination of children. Breastfeeding also reduces the risk of ovarian cancer, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes as reported by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Finally, studies also show that breastfeeding can help lower the risk of osteoporosis and stroke. That is a lot of health benefits that make for healthier women and society. And those are only the physical health benefits. There are also social-emotional benefits as well that help with bonding and parenting.

Just because a woman wants to breastfeed though doesn’t mean that she has the support to do so. While breastfeeding is natural, it isn’t always easy. The World Breastfeeding Week campaign this year focuses on survival, health and wellbeing. It will showcase the need to improve breastfeeding support to reduce inequalities that exist in our society with a special focus on breastfeeding in times of emergencies and crisis. A mother who is breastfeeding can continue to feed her baby without the need for clean water, formula or a way to boil water. Feeding her baby is one less thing to think about during an emergency or crisis.

Join us to celebrate mothers and to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding and human milk feeding for the 14th annual National Breastfeeding Month. In Hays and Ellis County, La Leche League of the Western Plains and the Ellis County Breastfeeding Coalition will hold a celebration on August 14th, 2024 at 10 am during our regularly scheduled La Leche League meeting. Making healthy choices is something we have the opportunity to do every day. For example, the foods and exercise we choose make a difference in our health and quality of life. However, it can be challenging to achieve a healthy balance because these choices can be difficult to make among all the other commitments in life.

The good news is that not all health-related decisions have to be challenging. For example, simply walking for 30 minutes throughout the day provides promising results. In fact, walking can improve heart health, strengthen the lungs, improve quality of sleep, and fight osteoporosis! Walking is shown to improve mood by the release of endorphins, and it lowers the risk of Alzheimer’s Disease. If walking is something you are interested in, a Walk with Ease class may be for you.

Walk with Ease (WWE) is here to help people with arthritis or other related conditions reduce pain, increase balance, strength, walking pace, and improve overall health. Walk with Ease is not only an evidence-based program, but it’s also fun! Participants have the opportunity to walk, stretch, and socialize during each session. WWE is a class created by the National Arthritis Foundation, and it is offered through Kansas State Research &amp; Extension.

Walk with Ease provides pain management and physical activity education to individuals and families. The class includes an educational book that covers various topics about walking and arthritis management, and the $20 registration fee covers the price of the book. Walk with Ease classes aim to help each participant implement realistic goals, maintain a long-term physical activity routine, and help Kansans find resources to stay active.

Are you ready to make the healthy choice the easy choice? Do you want to learn how to improve mobility and decrease pain? Are you eager to learn how to develop a personal walking plan?
