LAWRENCE — Undergraduate research at the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy is increasingly serving as a training ground for cross-disciplinary collaboration, preparing students for the team-based realities of modern health care.

Nationally,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7873741/">health care education has shifted toward interprofessional models</a>, recognizing that patient outcomes depend not on isolated expertise but coordinated systems of care. For some undergraduate students at KU, early research experiences are becoming an entry point into that collaborative framework.

For students like George Crawford IV, a chemistry and microbiology major from Ellis, research is more than a graduation requirement. His decision to work in&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://farrellglycolab.wordpress.com/">Mark Farrell’s lab</a>&nbsp;reflects deliberate steps toward bridging scientific discovery.

Drawn to KU’s pre-med pathway, Crawford arrived from a town of 1,700 people with deeply personal motivation. After losing his father to cancer at 14, he knew he wanted to pursue medicine. His experience with undergraduate research in medicinal chemistry has reshaped how he sees the path to get there.

“I didn’t know very much about the School of Pharmacy within chemistry,” he said, reflecting that it was only after hearing Farrell guest lecture that he realized there were opportunities for his capstone research outside of the lab. This lecture affirmed that the overlap between chemistry and human health is tangible and impactful.

Rather than completing his capstone research in a traditional chemistry lab, Crawford elected to complete his with Farrell in the Department of Medicinal Chemistry of the KU School of Pharmacy, an environment where focus extends beyond molecules to patient impact. &nbsp;

Traditional chemistry emphasizes theory, physical chemistry and mathematical modeling, which makes drug discovery possible. Medicinal chemistry builds upon that groundwork, sitting at the intersection of chemistry, biology and patient care, and asking the question of how this discovery can change someone’s life.

For Crawford, that shift expanded his understanding of what a career in science could look like.&nbsp;

“There are more opportunities out there than just chemistry, or just biology, or just medical school,” he said.&nbsp;

Crawford said the opportunity to explore medicinal chemistry has exposed him to research physicians, pharmaceutical pathways and interdisciplinary collaboration that he had not previously considered.

Ben Mosier, from Manhattan, another undergraduate studying chemistry and microbiology, found a similar bridge in Farrell’s lab. Interested in medicine and equally drawn to science, he sought out research that blended both worlds.

“It (medicinal chemistry) kind of blended my interests,” he said.

Mosier is currently working on cancer immunotherapy research, designing molecules to enhance immune targeting of cancer cells. In this environment, theoretical knowledge becomes therapeutic possibility.

“The more those departments collaborate together, I think that will improve the research and improve students’ education and understanding of research as a whole,” he said.

More than a résumé builder, this experience becomes training for team-based health care.

Modern health care increasingly depends on coordinated expertise. Physicians, pharmacists, researchers, nurses and public health professionals operate within interconnected systems. Early exposure to interdisciplinary research allows students to begin navigating those dynamics before entering professional programs.

For Crawford, collaboration also resonates from a rural perspective. Growing up in a small Kansas community, he observed how pharmacists often serve as some of the most accessible health care providers.&nbsp;

“You see your local pharmacists more than you see physicians,” he said.&nbsp;

In communities like his, effective care often relies on professionals understanding one another’s roles.

Undergraduate research requires initiative, mentorship and access to laboratory environments that support guided independence. For students who pursue it, the experience can extend beyond technical skill development and offers practice in navigating ambiguity, contributing to collaborative teams and thinking across disciplinary boundaries.

Research helps students move beyond memorization and into application.&nbsp;

"In classes, you memorize a lot of knowledge, but applying it is a different thing entirely,” Mosier said.&nbsp;

Learning to solve real problems, navigate ambiguity and collaborate builds the critical thinking required in any health care profession.

It also builds mentorship. Working alongside faculty and postdoctoral researchers, students gain confidence through guided independence and learn how collaborative research environments operate.

By encouraging undergraduate students to participate in research, they leave KU understanding that discovery is hardly in isolation. The medications patients take, the therapies that save lives and the innovations that define standards of care are almost always the result of interdisciplinary partnership.

Mosier summarized the long-term impact: Research builds “critical thinking and complex thinking skills… which will make them overall better at their job and make the world a better place."

Ellis native pursues undergrad KU research as gateway to collaborative health care

TOPEKA – Young cattlemen and women from across the state met in Topeka February 16-17 for the first installment of the 2026 Kansas Livestock Association (KLA) Young Stockmen’s Academy (YSA), which marks the program’s 20th year. 

Merck Animal Health remains the exclusive program sponsor, partnering with KLA to host members for an in-depth look into KLA and the beef industry. A series of four seminars are held throughout the year across Kansas.

In their first gathering, YSA members were introduced to the array of member services provided by KLA, heard about the importance of being an advocate for the livestock industry, learned about lobbying at the state Capitol and took part in the annual KLA legislative meeting and dinner. 

Additionally, YSA members toured the capitol with KLA lobbyists, viewed the House of Representatives in session and participated in a financial planning seminar conducted by Pinion. 

&nbsp;KLA communications staff, Riley County beef producers and entrepreneurs Andy and Sara Larson, and WIBW-Topeka farm broadcaster Greg Akagi gave the group an overview of various outlets available to help tell the beef production story, inspired them to get involved in their communities as a representative of the beef industry and shared information on how to handle media inquiries. 

The Larsons talked about their experience in launching their own direct-to-consumer beef business, 1880 Beef, and their interactions with consumers. Akagi led the class in mock radio and television interviews.

Hays, Ellis producers part of Young Stockmen's Academy 

MANHATTAN — More than 1,100 students completed degree requirements from Kansas State University in fall 2025.

The university awarded approximately 800 bachelor's degrees, 250 master's degrees and 50 doctorates. Several students earned multiple degrees.

For outstanding academic performance, more than 681 students earned graduation honors. Of those, 262 students graduated summa cum laude with a grade point average of 3.95 or above, 238 students graduated magna cum laude with a grade point average of 3.85 to 3.949, and 181 students graduated cum laude with a GPA of 3.75 to 3.849.

Area students earn Kansas State University fall 2025 degrees, graduation honors

The winners of the 2026 Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Kansas State Championship Fall Qualifier have been announced by Certiport, a Pearson Business, the leading provider of performance-based IT certification exams that accelerate people’s academic and career opportunities.

Winning first place in the Microsoft Office Specialist Excel (Office 2019), category is Kamden Keller of Ellis, at Fort Hays Tech North Central’s business technology program. Keller competed against students from across Kansas to earn this coveted placement.

“I’ve used excel almost my whole life but it is amazing how much you can do with the application the deeper the dive into it, I’m really happy to have learned these skills as I know I will be using Excel in many different ways to keep me organized in the future!” said Keller.

Taking first place in the Microsoft Office Specialist Word (Office 2019), category is Kara Roulier of Brewster at Fort Hays Tech North Central’s business technology program. Roulier also competed against students from across Kansas to earn this coveted placement.

“Winning the Kansas championship proves to me that we are truly learning so much here at Fort Hays Tech North Central. It is insane how I went from barely knowing Word to knowing enough to win the Kansas championship," said Roulier.

Winning the state of Kansas Outstanding Educator of the Year category is Jennifer Younger, instructor of the Business Technology program at Fort Hays Tech North Central. Younger competed against instructors from across Kansas to earn this prestigious award.

"This semester, our students didn't just learn software—they mastered it! Sweeping the state titles in Word and Excel is a historic win for the Business Technology program at Fort Hays Tech North Central. Furthermore, the 'Excel Expert Certification' is an incredibly high bar to clear. The four students who reached 'Excel Expert' level required a level of grit and technical precision that few achieve. These aren't just classroom wins; these are marketable, high-level&nbsp;professional skills that will set them apart in any business career path they choose. Watching my students obtain these industry-recognized credentials from Microsoft is a career highlight," said Younger.

To compete in the Fall Qualifier, students aged 13 to 22 were eligible to participate in one of six competition tracks by submitting a qualified, passing score on the MOS Word, Excel®, or PowerPoint® certification exams by December 19, 2025.

The first-place students will get to represent Kansas at the upcoming 2026 MOS U.S. National Championship in Nashville, Tennessee. During this event, they will compete in their exam track, network with other top students from around the United States and celebrate their certification success. One winner per track will be named the U.S. National Champion and earn a trip to represent the United States and compete in the 2026 MOS World Championship in Anaheim, California.

“We have seen amazing results from the MOS program at our school as students learn and validate key workforce skills,” said Younger. “The MOS U.S. National Championship further motivates them to get certified, and we are proud of these students who have proven to be the best in our state. We know they will go on to make us proud at the MOS U.S. National Championship in June.”

The Microsoft Office Specialist certification is the only official Microsoft-recognized certification for Microsoft Office globally and serves as a powerful instrument for assessing students’ skills and preparing them for real-world application of their knowledge.

Washington Grade School students in Ellis celebrated President's Day with a special guest on Monday.

Michael Jilg, a Hays artist, painted an 8-foot-by-8-foot portrait of President Washington 50 years ago for the country's bicentennial celebration.

After spending some time outside in front of the school, facing Washington Street in Ellis, the portrait was eventually moved inside the school and now hangs in one of its main hallways.

"My vision of art is to show people something they've never seen before," he said. "And if they have seen it before, to show it to them in a way that is unusual."

Jilg, who painted the portrait based on Gilbert Stuart's famous portrait of the president, said he never anticipated the painting would last this long.

He said that when he stepped into the school on Monday, it was the first time he had seen the portrait in 50 years.

Jilg, who was living and working in Ellis on Washington Street at the time, scavenged sheets of masonite and old wood from the local lumberyard to use as canvas and a frame.

He used a 1-foot-by-1-foot grid system to size the Gilbert painting up to the larger school portrait.

He explained to the students that there were no cell phones or cameras in 1776. If you wanted a picture of George Washington, and everyone wanted one, you had to have a painting made.

Gilbert Stuart never fully finished his official portrait of George Washington. He would paint a little and then take time off to paint copies that he could sell on the side to make money, Jilg said.

The original portrait is in Washington, D.C.,&nbsp; but Stuart copies still exist today.

The children asked Jilg what it was like before cell phones.&nbsp;

Jilg said at the time he painted his portrait, he just wanted an excuse to paint something big. He used enamel house paint samples.

"It was the bicentennial, and everyone was excited about the country being 200 years old," he said.

He had to paint the image in two panels, so he could get the painting out of his house.

Jig took time to answer the children's questions after a short presentation on the portrait.

Jilg painted the Washington portrait when he was 30, but he told the students he had started painting at 18.

His school had no art program when he was a child, but he said he constantly doodled when he should have been paying attention.

"It's taken the rest of my life to learn what I should have when I was your age," he said.

He said he was a "gear head" in high school. He liked fixing cars and working with his hands.

It wasn't until he went to college that he began to pursue art seriously.

"I enjoy every moment I'm making art," Jilg said. "It doesn't matter what it is."

Hays artist shares story of Washington portrait painted for grade school 50 years ago

Taegan Shannon, Ellis, has been named to the President’s List at the University of Southern Mississippi for the fall semester of the 2025-2026 academic year.&nbsp;

Shannon is a freshman majoring in Legal Studies with an emphasis on Pre-Law.&nbsp;&nbsp;She is also a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority. &nbsp;

Shannon is the daughter of Brian and Amanda Shannon. &nbsp;

Students are placed on the <a href="https://www.usm.edu/registrar/presidents-list/index.php">President’s List</a> if they earn a 4.0 grade point average (all A’s) while completing a minimum academic load of 12 or more semester hours during the fall or spring semester, or nine or more semester hours during the summer term.

Additionally, students must have no grade of Incomplete (I) for the term. Courses taken for pass-fail credit are not included in computing the minimum academic load.

ELLIS — Friends of the Ellis Public Library in Ellis, KS will host “Children of the Promised Land,” a presentation and discussion by Angela Bates on Feb. 1 at 3:00pm at the Ellis Public Library, 907 Washington St. 

Members of the community are invited to attend the free program.

Nicodemus, a small, unincorporated town in Graham County, is the only remaining western town established by African Americans during the Reconstruction Period following the Civil War. Black homesteaders settled the town, which today is a national historic site. This pictorial history explores the unique experience of mothers and their children in Nicodemus, some of whom were the first members of their families born free.

Bates is the executive director and past president of the Nicodemus Historical Society. She presents educational programs across the nation covering Nicodemus, Exodusters and black towns in the West, Buffalo Soldiers, and black women in the West.

“My great uncle, Henry Williams, was the first baby born in Nicodemus just a month after my great-grandmother Emma arrived with the first group of settlers in 1877,” said Bates. “He was one of the first in his generation born on the free soils of Kansas. He represents the many children of his generation that were reared by parents who were former slaves.”

The annual KAY Snowball Dance will be on Saturday, Feb. 7.&nbsp;&nbsp;The dance is from 8 to 10:30 p.m. Crowning for Snowball Royalty will be at about 10 p.m. Parents and the community are welcome to attend the crowning.

Ellis High School, Snowball Royalty 2026

ELLIS — Some moments come around once in 125 years.

 This spring, the Ellis Alumni Association will observe this momentous anniversary on May 22-23 to celebrate&nbsp; their past, present, and future. 

The Ellis Alumni Association&nbsp; is one of the oldest active alumnis in the state of Kansas. For over a century Ellis High School&nbsp; has shaped minds, built leaders and created a legacy&nbsp; that has stood the test of time. 

"We encourage&nbsp; and are thrilled to welcome alumni back to relive the hallways that shaped their future and catch up with friends who helped make their time at Ellis High School so memorable," said alumni president Sylvia Deutscher. "Again, honor classes are graduating classes ending in 1 and 6, but we encourage the other alumni community to join in as well."

Tentative plans the Ellis Alumni Board have announced&nbsp; are:

Ellis Alumni Association announces plans for 125th anniversary

ELLIS — The Ellis High School wrestling team celebrated Senior Night during the 2025 Railer Round Robin Wrestling Tournament on Friday, December 12, 2025. We were proud to recognize one of our senior Lady Railer wrestlers, Kia Mader.

Kia is the daughter of Michael and Mindi Mader. She is an active student involved in various clubs and sports, consistently maintaining an A-B Honor Roll standing. Recently, she was inducted into the National Honor Society. Currently, Kia is ranked #4 in her weight class statewide for wrestling.

Kia plans to attend Barton Community College, where she intends to major in nursing and minor in psychology.

Ellis High School wrestling team celebrates Senior Night

On Tuesday, November 25, 2025, Ellis High School inducted nine juniors and fifteen seniors into the local chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS). 

The requirements for NHS membership include maintaining a grade point average of at least 3.5, demonstrating leadership in seven organizations within the school or community, completing 40 hours of community service, and receiving a positive character evaluation from teachers. 

The following students were inducted into the National Honor Society:

Ellis High School inducts 24 into National Honor Society

TOPEKA&nbsp;–&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly and&nbsp;Kansas Department of&nbsp;Transportation Secretary Calvin Reed announced $5.9&nbsp;million&nbsp;in awards for&nbsp;10&nbsp;transportation construction projects&nbsp;through&nbsp;KDOT’s&nbsp;fall 2025&nbsp;Cost Share&nbsp;Program.&nbsp;This state&nbsp;investment will&nbsp;leverage&nbsp;nearly $3.3&nbsp;million&nbsp;in community matching&nbsp;funds, totaling more than&nbsp;$9&nbsp;million&nbsp;for infrastructure improvements that will enhance safety, support local economies,&nbsp;and improve connectivity&nbsp;across Kansas.&nbsp;

"KDOT’S&nbsp;Cost Share&nbsp;Program&nbsp;is&nbsp;a&nbsp;prime&nbsp;example of&nbsp;strategic&nbsp;government investment&nbsp;that&nbsp;improves our communities and Kansans’&nbsp;lives," said Kelly. Ellis, Lucas part of $5.9M for KDOT cost share program projects

Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas is pleased to announce that the Esther McMurtrie Memorial Golf Tournament raised over $16,900. The 4-person scramble tournament was held on Friday, September 12 at the Ellis Golf Club.&nbsp;A total of 20 teams participated in the event that included flight and raffle prizes and lunch on the course. 

Proceeds are being used for the renovation of one of DSNWK’s group living homes in Hays. 

DSNWK would like to thank the many participants, contributors and supporters who made the event a success.

McMurtrie Memorial Golf Tournament in Ellis raises nearly $17,000

Cathleen Kroeger of Ellis is looking for children to enroll in her Cat's Child Care in Ellis.

Kroeger, 38, became a child care provider in 2020. She was working as a children's librarian at the Hays Public Library, but was facing the challenge of enrolling three of her children in child care. She said that it did not seem practical at the time.

"It was pretty boring only having three kids to take care of," she said.

"Child care seemed like the perfect fit," she said. "I was able to work with kids again, having more kids to take care of and do some of the things I think are fun along with my kids."

Kroeger has six children. Her step-daughter is 12, and she also has children aged 11, 9, 7, 1, and 2 months.

Kroeger said she has always loved working with children.

She has a degree in psychology from Kansas State University and took many courses in early childhood development while working on her degree.

Although Kroerger does not have a formalized preschool curriculum, she said she focuses on developing creativity and problem-solving skills through play.

"My favorite part is when you are working with a kid, and they get it," she said. "You worked on it, worked on it, worked on it, and you've seen the kid go through all of the frustration and then getting some proficiency and then all of a sudden they get that proficiency, and they get that mastery level, and they are just so proud of themselves."

She said she tries to help the children build life skills, such as putting on their shoes or zipping their jackets.&nbsp;

Even very young children can help pick up a toy. She thanks the child and praises them for being helpful.

"I try to pick moments to tell them about things," she said. "When we are out on a walk, I'll hand them some leaves and talk about how this feels cruncky and 'Look at the color. That's brown.' They're learning things naturally.

The students who leave her child care to go to kindergarten generally know their colors and have started to learn numbers and some letters."I don't have them sitting down doing worksheets. It's not like a curriculum or institution-type setting. It's learning through play and their own curiosity."&nbsp;&nbsp;Being in a child care home rather than a center, Kroeger said, allows her to focus more on the individual needs and development of children.She said she loves to take the children on field trips. They go to parks in Ellis and Hays, the swimming pool, the Sternberg Museum, the Hays and Ellis libraries, and even out of town to the zoo.Kroeger tends to have school-age children during the summer. She asks on the parent form what types of activities the children would like to do and what their interests are.One child was interested in the solar system. Kroeger obtained appliance boxes from the hardware store, and the children created a spaceship.They used sidewalk chalk to draw the layers of the atmosphere, then "flew" their spaceship through the atmosphere into space.Kroeger, who rides a motorcycle, likes to take the children on bicycle rides. She has several toddler balance bikes for the younger children."I have a really cute picture from one summer. I was full. I had 10 kids. There was a line of all 10 of them on the little bikes. We stopped, and they looked back at me, and I snapped the photo. I always said that was my little biker gang," she said.On another occasion, she took a group of seven boys outside to play after the rain. They all jumped into a giant mud puddle."Those boys had a blast," she said. "They were covered in mud. ... I try to keep those things alive—the everyday things that you would get to do as a kid, especially some of those things as parents we don't enjoy because it makes a big mess."I had several parents comment at pick up, 'I'm glad they got to do that with you and not at my house,'" she said.Kroeger also brings some of her experience from working as a librarian into her child care home, including reading books and singing songs.Her favorite book is "Nuts: Sing and Dance in Your Polka Dot Pants" by Eric Litwin. He performed at the Hays Public Library during her tenure there, and she was able to visit with him about his books.She attended a special training session for librarians on physical exercise, along with learning math and literacy skills, which can help children build connections between the two hemispheres of their brains and better retain these skills.She is also certified as an instructor in noncorrosive potty training and elimination communication. She starts potty training at 18 months old in the child care. The children in her care are usually reliably potty-trained and wearing underwear by age 2.Kroeger said her most significant challenge, at the moment, is finding children to fill her child care slots. She currently has no children enrolled.
