Traffic control for the Reconstruction of South Vine 
Street Project will change on Thursday. &nbsp;

During the 
next phase of construction, northbound traffic on Vine Street between 
the U.S. 183 Bypass and Eighth Street will be carried on the new pavement in 
the center of Vine Street. Southbound traffic will remain on the old 
pavement along the west side of Vine Street in the outside southbound 
lane. &nbsp; 

The intersection of Eighth and Vine will open to through east/west 
traffic. Due to construction in the northeast corner of the 
intersection of Vine Street and the U.S. 183 Bypass, westbound Old Highway
 40 will be closed east of Vine Street. Old Highway 40 will remain open
 to local traffic, but westbound through traffic will need to use Eighth 
Street.&nbsp;

North
 of Eighth Street, traffic will remain one lane in each direction in the 
outside lanes, while the inside lanes are still being reconstructed.

&nbsp;The Bukovinafest 2022 was a casualty of the COVID pandemic and travel problems.

Programs of the Bukovina German heritage worldwide were planned for Sept. 15 to 17 in Ellis and Hays but canceled due to a very low registration count.

In order to inform members in time to change their plans, the society is contacting those who were planning to attend. The scheduled presenters at the fest represented a wide variety of ethnic and heritage origins.

&nbsp;The program committee has determined that some of the programs will be made available. Information on this will be distributed.

Although more may be added, one program now available on the Society website will be "Fuerstenthal," by Rebecca Hageman, an ancestral village of many people with Ellis ties in Bukovina.

Presentations that will be available very soon include "Early Day Farming" by Van Massirer, "Family Connections" in Bohemia, by Doug Reckmann, and the "Massirer Ancestral Village Tour" by Laura Scott.

The highlight presentation by Kath Garofoli, "From Czernowitz to Sydney," has many photos on the family history of the emigration from Bukovina to other locations in the New World.

&nbsp;The committee will explore presenting future events by way of Zoom, which is working well for other historical and genealogical organizations. With hundreds of members, the Bukovina Society is dedicated to continuing the preservation of their heritage.&nbsp;

MANHATTAN — Grain growers in central Kansas who plan to campaign for a seat on one of the state’s five grain commodity commissions — corn, grain sorghum, soybeans, wheat or sunflowers — should be gathering petition signatures now to meet the November 30 filing deadline. The 2023 election will cover districts four, five, and six; or the central third of Kansas. &nbsp;

To be eligible to run for any of the five commodity commissions, the candidate must have been actively engaged in growing that commodity (corn, grain sorghum, soybeans, wheat or sunflowers) within the preceding five years and may only represent the district of their primary residence.

Candidates must gather 20 signatures from eligible voters to be included on the 2023 ballot. No more than five signatures from any one county can be used to qualify a candidate. Eligible voters are Kansas residents who will reach age 18 before the election and who have grown corn, grain sorghum, soybeans, sunflowers or wheat for the last three years.

Candidates may choose to complete their petition online, by paper, or a combination of both. Grow Hays, in association with the Network Kansas E-Community Partnership, has announced the "Think Like an Entrepreneur" - Ice House Entrepreneurship Program offered in Ellis County will start Sept.
14. Sessions will be held over eight weeks on Wednesdays — Sept. 14 through Nov. 2. The
program fee of $150 for adults and $75 for students. The fee covers catered meals. The goal of the course is to teach participants to
develop an entrepreneurial mindset.


Taught by Kris Munsch, a certified Ice House facilitator, this interactive eight-week program provides practical
entrepreneurial lessons through first-hand experiences of successful, real-life entrepreneurs. Based on the
book, "Who Owns the Ice House?," this curriculum consists case studies along with individual assignments,
assessments, and discussion topics. This popular course is offered only a handful of times per year across the
state and Grow Hays is excited to have local Kris Munsch teaching the course.


"To think like an entrepreneur, you need to begin at the beginning. The beginning is 'what is a mindset?' I
believe we need that understanding, a foundational building block of self. From there, we can seek, explore,
and build our path," Munsch said.

Hays High seeking applications for homecoming parade

The Center for Life Experience (CFLE), 103C E. 27th&nbsp;St., is starting two new programs, one for divorced adults and one for foster children.

The CFLE Book Circle will begin a six-week series on the topic of divorce, from 5 to 6:15 p.m. Thursdays at the center, beginning Sept. 29 and running through Nov. 10. The group will not meet Thursday, Oct. 20.

Participants will be studying the book “Something Gained—7 Shifts to Be Stronger, Smarter &amp; Happier After Divorce” by Deb Purdy. A $10 fee will cover the cost of the book.

Darian Schulte, CFLE’s executive director, said the group is for those who are newly divorced or have been divorced for a long while.

Schulte said the sessions will help those who “are ready to transform anger, blame, and regret into joy, acceptance, and personal power; embrace the gifts and losses of divorce; peacefully co-exist with one’s spouse; support their kids in healing and thriving after divorce, and develop plans for creating life the way they&nbsp;have always wanted it.”

Registration is limited to 10 individuals and is due by Monday, Sept. 19, by calling 785-259-6859 or emailing&nbsp;<a href="mailto:emily@cflehope.org" target="_blank">emily@cflehope.org</a>.

Center for Life Experience offers programs for divorced adults, foster children

TOPEKA - A reminder that deadlines are coming up soon for statewide poster and video contests as part of this year’s "Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day" safety campaign. Kansas students can win great prizes and learn about traffic safety.

In addition, the school, class or booster club of the grand prize-winning students will also receive money as part of the contests’ prizes.

Poster contest deadline is Friday, Sept. 23, for Kansas students ages 5 to 13.

Students who submit completed poster entries will be eligible for a random prize drawing of a $100 Amazon gift card. Students and schools can win prizes in KDOT 'Put the Brakes on Fatalities' contest

At 7:14 a.m.&nbsp;Sept. 26, the DART satellite will slam into the asteroid Dimorphos, which orbits a&nbsp;larger asteroid named&nbsp;Didymos, at the speed of 15,000 mph.&nbsp; Picture a vending machine hitting the pyramid of Giza.

The goal is to slightly change the orbital time of Dimorphos as the first test of planetary defense from asteroid collisions.&nbsp;While neither asteroid is any threat to Earth, it is a proof-of-concept mission.&nbsp;

Dr. Paul Adams,&nbsp;NASA JPL Solar System Ambassador at Fort Hays State University, will discuss the mission at an upcoming <a href="http://www.fhsu.edu/smei">Science Cafe.</a> The presentation is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19, at The Venue @ Thirsty's, 2704 Vine.

Bottoms and most of western Kansas remain dry. Drought-like conditions 
have caused Kansas Wetlands Education Center staff to rethink some of 
its programming this year, but the annual Butterfly Festival cannot be 
stopped. The event has been limited the past few years but returns to 
full glory on Saturday, Sept. 17.

"We are having to make some 
adjustments," said KWEC Director Curtis Wolf. "Until you go through 
something like this, you don't realize how much it affects our 
programming. We're booked solid with schools, typically, in the fall and
 we are this year. A lot of the programs we do are getting the kids out 
in the water, looking for the aquatic inverts. We're not able to do 
that."

Approximately 60 treasure hunters attended a recent KWEC 
event in the now-dry pools at the Bottoms. Saturday, KWEC will host its 
minnow races at the Labor Day Celebration in Hoisington. But the big 
event each year is the Butterfly Festival, and Wolf hopes the migrating 
insects will cooperate.

"There again, with it being as dry as it 
is, and there's not just a ton of flowers out there," he said. "We kind 
of question how long the monarchs might stick around. Hopefully, we'll 
time it right, they'll be coming through right at that time, and we'll 
have access to a lot of the monarchs."

The event runs from 9 a.m. 
to 12:30 p.m. on Sept. 17. The tagging portion involves catching 
monarchs with a net and applying a small sticker to the wings. 
Approximately 500 butterflies were tagged at the event last year, and 
nearly a dozen were later found in Mexico.

"That's an incredible 
thing," Wolf said. "It does provide some interesting research for the 
scientists studying the monarchs. That's why we do it. And it's really 
fun."

Many events return to this year's festival, including the 
insect zoo and wildflower seed bomb launch. Kansas City-based StoneLion 
Puppet Theater returns for two performances of "Backyard Buggin," and 
Barton Community College's Dance Theater will perform twice and conduct a
 short dance workshop for children ages 5-10, complete with costumes. 
All the festival events are free, but pre-registration is required for 
the dance workshop.

KWEC Butterfly Festival returns to Cheyenne Bottoms Sept. 17

Due to the observance of the Labor Day, the city of Hays refuse/recycling route collection schedules will be altered as 
follows: 

Monday and Tuesday routes will 
be picked up on Tuesday.

There is no anticipated change to Wednesday, Thursday or Friday collection schedules.

Although
 collections may not occur on your normal day, collections will be 
completed during the week. It is anticipated that heavy volumes of 
refuse/recycling will be encountered around the holidays. Make 
sure your refuse and recycling are out by 7 a.m., and keep in mind that

City of Hays changes trash routes for Labor Day

A space-themed
 weekend is coming up Sept. 10 in Larned. That Saturday, the Santa Fe 
Trail Center and Fort Larned National Historic Site will host hands-on 
and instructional events that are free to the public. The events are a 
celebration of the scientific achievements of the James Webb Telescope. 
Fort Larned Park Ranger Celeste Dixon offers a hint about the telescope.

"It
 takes pictured with infrared, which actually allows it to see past the 
dust clouds that get in the way," she said. "These dust clouds in space 
block visible light, but infrared light gets through so it can take 
pictures much further out into space and get much clearer pictures than 
Hubble can get."

The fun begins Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at the 
Santa Fe Trail Center. A "Walking the Galaxy" event outdoors will 
provide a scaled demonstration of the size of the solar system. Kids can
 build a bead bracelet and learn about the life cycles of massive stars,
 and a "Meeting the Neighbors" program will discuss neighboring planets 
and galaxies. A discussion about telescopes follows at 11 a.m.

"We're
 going to be giving a talk on, basically, the history of telescopes, 
going from the homemade telescope of Clyde Tombaugh, who grew up over by
 Burdett, and that will lead to James Webb," said Santa Fe Trail Museum 
Director Seth McFarland.

After a brief break, events resume at the
 Fort Larned National Historic Site from 1-3:30 p.m. Programming there 
will include rotating images from the Webb Telescope with a discussion 
of how it works. Hands-on activities include "packing a telescope" to 
demonstrate how Webb was launched into space, and spinning a nebulous 
using a salad spinner.

Admission is free to both events, however standard admission rates will apply for tours of the Santa Fe Trail Museum.

Fort
 Larned will also be hosting free living history before Labor Day on 
Saturday, Sept. 3. A blacksmith demonstration begins at 10 a.m., 
followed by a firearms demonstration with small arms and a Howitzer at 
11 a.m. Programs on Buffalo Soldiers, drum calls of the Civil War Era, 
and life on officer's row follow in the afternoon. Admission is free for
 all events.

The Western Plains Arts Association will open its 53rd&nbsp;season with a Las Vegas show featuring John Denver songs by Jim Curry and his band. They have been celebrated nationally and internationally, and have been touring South Dakota, New Mexico and now Kansas.&nbsp;

The Dane G. Hansen Foundation is sponsoring the show, scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, in the Oakley High School auditorium. 

Admission is by season ticket or at the door — adults, $20, students, $10.

Sunflower Health Plan announces member day at Hays farmers market

Fort Hays State University, the Tiger Fitness Center and local first responders will host the second annual 9/11 Memorial Event and Stair Climb on Saturday, Sept. 10. The event, held at Lewis Field on the campus of Fort Hays State University, begins at 7:46 a.m.&nbsp;

All ages are welcome at the event, with a brief memorial ceremony taking place ahead of the stair climb or walk. The memorial will highlight the sacrifices of first responders who put others first during the 9/11 attacks at the World Trade Center, Pentagon and on Flight 93.&nbsp;

Kid-Link Pizza Hunt fundraisers set for Thursday

ELLIS — “Let the Good Times Roll”&nbsp;at the St. Mary’s Parish 28th&nbsp;Annual Auction in Elli on Saturday, Sept. 17th. 

The evening begins with Mass at 4 p.m., and doors open at 5 p.m. with a silent auction. Gella’s Diner + Lb. Brewing Co. will catering the meal at 6:30 p.m., and the live oral auction starts at 7:30 p.m.&nbsp;

The Alzheimer’s Association invites Hays residents to join the fight to end Alzheimer’s by registering for the 2022 Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

This event is Sept. 10 at Fort Hays State University Quad (east side of Memorial Union). Register today to get your team ready to raise critical awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. More than 6.5 million Americans&nbsp;&nbsp;are living with Alzheimer’s disease — 55,000 in Kansas. Additionally, more than 86,000 Kansas caregivers are providing unpaid care, valued at $1.4 billion, to their loved ones with Alzheimer’s. 

“As a member of the Walk to End Alzheimer’s planning committee, I am excited to plan this walk in the Hays community,"&nbsp; said Brandon Taylor. "I know our community will continue the fight to help eliminate Alzheimer’s from future generations.”

FORT LARNED — Labor Day Weekend traditionally signals the end of summer. Bring your summer fun to a historic close with a weekend of fun and learning at Fort Larned’s Labor Day Weekend Living History Event. &nbsp;

Volunteers and staff will once again bring Fort Larned to life during the Labor Day Weekend living history event.&nbsp;&nbsp;Get a glimpse into the life of a frontier soldier with rifle and artillery firing demonstrations, and their life in the army.&nbsp;&nbsp;You can also visit with officers’ wives, as well as watch the post blacksmith use a forge and anvil to transform iron into everyday objects.&nbsp;

Come out and end your summer with a celebration of our nation’s history.&nbsp;&nbsp;Here is the schedule of events for all three days.&nbsp;

TOPEKA — The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is holding public meetings to help communities and public water supply systems learn about the Environmental Protection Agency’s new Lead and Copper Rule Revisions. Under the LCRR, public water supply systems are required to prepare and maintain an inventory of service line materials. This inventory is to be submitted to KDHE by Oct. 16, 2024.

Public water supply system decision-makers, operators and the public are invited to attend to learn more about the inventory requirements and actions that can be taken to reduce lead exposure risks in drinking water. Piping containing lead can become a potential health risk in drinking water. Some homes (typically built before 1988) may have lead service lines that connect to the public water supply system. Young children, infants and fetuses are particularly vulnerable to lead in drinking water and water used for formula because the physical and behavioral effects of lead occur at lower exposure levels in children.
