Members of the HPD will be at the Gella's from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The HPD members will approach tables with servers. They will inform the diners about Special Olympics and leave an envelope in which the diners can leave donations, said Brain Dawson, Hays deputy chief.

The HPD volunteers will help serve and bus tables.

"Our goal is to get out there and raise as many funds as we can," Dawson said.

Local law enforcement has historically been a supporter of Special Olympics both fundraising and participating in torch lighting for the Kansas basketball and cheerleading events conducted annually in Hays.

"We like to think the community is aware, but every little bit helps raise awareness of the needs of the athletes and their families," Dawson said.

TOPEKA — The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has issued a boil water advisory for the city of Smith Center public water supply system located in Smith County.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

The advisory took effect on Dec. 2 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE officials issued the advisory because of a line break resulting in a loss of pressure in the distribution system.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or Kansas Department of Health and Environment announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

The Wall That Heals, a three-quarter scale replica of the 
Vietnam Veterans Memorial along with a mobile Education Center, is 
coming to Great Bend, KS on May 11th-May 14th, 2023 at Veterans Memorial
 Park&nbsp;and will be open 24 hours a day and free to the public.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Wall That Heals&nbsp;honors
 the more than three million Americans who served in the U.S. Armed 
forces in the Vietnam War and it bears the names of the 58,281 men and 
women who made the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam.

“We are excited to be able to host&nbsp;The Wall That Heals&nbsp;in Great Bend, said Larry Parson, Chairperson&nbsp;

for&nbsp;The Wall That Heals&nbsp;/ Great Bend Leadership Committee.&nbsp; "We 
have an opportunity to honor our Vietnam Veterans and our Hometown 
Heroes and the families to those listed on the Wall who have sacrificed 
so much for us.&nbsp;In addition, our students and citizens will get a rare 
opportunity to not only witness the Wall, but learn the history of the 
Vietnam War and the impact of the Vietnam Era from the educational

The Wall That Heals&nbsp;is transported from community to community
 in a 53-foot trailer. When parked, the trailer opens with exhibits 
built into its sides, allowing it to serve as a mobile Education Center 
telling the story of the Vietnam War, The Wall and the divisive era in 
American history.

The three-quarter scale Wall replica is 375 feet
 in length and stands 7.5 feet high at its tallest point. Visitors will 
experience The Wall rising above them as they walk towards the apex, a 
key feature of the design of The Wall in D.C. Visitors are able to do 
name rubbings of individual service member’s names on The Wall.

The
 mobile Education Center exhibit includes: digital photo displays of 
“Hometown Heroes” - service members whose names are on The Wall that 
list their home of record within the area of a visit; digital photo 
displays of Vietnam veterans from the local area honored through VVMF’s&nbsp;In Memory&nbsp;program
 which honors veterans who returned home from Vietnam and later died; 
video displays that teach about the history and impact of The Wall; 
educational exhibits told through items representative of those left at 
The Wall in D.C.; a replica of the&nbsp;In Memory&nbsp;plaque; a map of 
Vietnam and a chronological overview of the Vietnam War. The exhibits 
tell the story of the Vietnam War, The Wall and the era surrounding the 
conflict, and are designed to put American experiences in Vietnam in a 
historical and cultural context.

The 2023 national&nbsp;The Wall That Heals&nbsp;tour is generously 
sponsored by USAA. Through a partnership with the Truckload Carriers 
Association (TCA), the trucking industry, and Blue Beacon, the exhibit 
is able to travel across the country. Local sponsors are&nbsp;the Dorothy Morrison Foundation and the Great Bend Foundation.

Since
 its debut in 1996, the exhibit has been on display in more than 700 
U.S. communities in addition to an April 1999 tour of the Four Provinces
 of Ireland and a visit to Canada in 2005.&nbsp;The Wall That Heals&nbsp;is a program of VVMF, the nonprofit organization that built the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. in 1982.&nbsp;The Wall That Heals&nbsp;is

Vietnam Memorial wall replica coming to Great Bend

HUTCHINSON - The Hutchinson-based <a href="https://climateandenergy.org/">Climate + Energy Project</a> (CEP) is excited to announce a new program that will begin in 2023:

The goals of this group include&nbsp;broadening the knowledge base of Kansans in order to increase their confidence in conversations about wind energy, and to help CEP staff recognize opportunities for wind energy outreach and education throughout the state. 

Through this advisory group, members will hear from subject matter experts in order to expand knowledge of various aspects of wind energy, connect with wind energy champions throughout the state, and identify action steps and ways to engage with their communities.&nbsp;

We are searching for Kansans who are curious about clean energy and feel passionately about connecting with their community to join this advisory group. 

Applicants of all backgrounds and interest in climate or clean energy are encouraged to apply.

LOGAN - The Hansen Museum’s continuing education program is excited to offer Encaustic Painting with Rebel Mahieu. 

Encaustic painting is painting with hot wax and color pigments. By using wax, the artist can render a three dimensional piece. Encaustic painting is an ancient artform that has seen a resurgence since the 1990s.

The class is for beginner or advanced creatives, and involves painting, sculpting, and layering like collage and is scheduled for Saturday, December 10, 2022, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the comfortable atmosphere of the Hansen Museum Community Room.

Registration fees for this workshop are $90.00 with discounts available to Patron and Sustaining Hansen Museum members.

Holiday happenings in Osborne County

Three grief support groups from the Center for Life Experience will have their annual Holiday Memorial Tree Dedications at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, at Jackie Creamer’s Dance Studio, 1003 Main.

The trees will be on display in the studio’s large windows until after Jan. 1, said Darian Schulte, the center’s executive director.

Each year the “Healing Hearts” support group, for individuals who have lost a child, decorates a Christmas tree with special ornaments, each commemorating the life of a precious child.

The other two groups are Healing After Loss, for those who have suffered the loss of a special adult, and Healing After Loss of Suicide, for those who have lost someone to suicide. Those two groups will also be decorating a tree, Schulte said.

The event is open to the public. Individuals are welcome to bring their own special ornaments, or ornaments with tags will be available for a donation to the center., Schulte said.&nbsp;&nbsp;Refreshments will be served.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 The kids on the Hope Tree are foster children&nbsp; that Saint Francis Ministry works with. They brought the tags to us later this year so there’s a shorter time to pick up the tags and purchase the gift.

Plainville Home for the Holidays set for Nov. 27 

LENEXA – U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Michael S. Regan announced that EPA’s Office of Environmental Education is now accepting applications for the 2023 President’s Environmental Youth Awards (PEYA) and Presidential Innovation Awards for Environmental Educators (PIAEE).

“Students, educators, and young people have contributed so much to EPA’s mission to protect human health and the environment. Today I am encouraging students and teachers who are working on important issues from climate change to environmental justice and more to apply for the President’s Environmental Youth Awards and Presidential Innovation Awards for Environmental Educators,” said&nbsp;EPA Administrator Regan. “I’m looking forward to honoring teachers and students that are working hard to advance environmental education.”

“From cleaning up ocean pollution to expanding access to clean drinking water, America’s young people are making hugely consequential strides in addressing our nation’s biggest environmental challenges,” said&nbsp;Council on Environmental Quality Chair Brenda Mallory. “These Presidential awards are an opportunity to recognize the work of students and educators who are boldly taking on environmental stewardship projects and building healthier, safer communities across the country.”

Applications for both awards programs are due no later than January 11, 2023.

Established by the 1990 National Environmental Education Act, PEYA recognizes outstanding environmental stewardship projects from students in grades K-12, by promoting environmental awareness and encouraging community involvement. Also established by the 1990 National Environmental Education Act, PIAEE recognizes outstanding K-12 grade educators who integrate environmental, place-based experiential learning into school curricula and school facility management across the country. The White House Council on Environmental Quality, in partnership with EPA, administers the PIAEE awards program.

Ellis County 4-H Council invites Kansas teens&nbsp;to participate in&nbsp;its upcoming&nbsp;“Chat, Don’t Snap”&nbsp;workshop on&nbsp;Sunday, Dec. 4&nbsp;from 1 to 5 p.m. at the FHSU Memorial Union. The event will&nbsp;give teens the opportunity to grow their leadership and communication skills&nbsp;through civil discourse.

Dr. Lori Kniffin, Fort Hays State University Assistant Professor of Leadership&nbsp;Studies&nbsp;and expert in civic leadership &amp; dialogue,&nbsp;will&nbsp;introduce&nbsp;the&nbsp;importance of civil discourse through a keynote&nbsp;address. Breakout sessions for both parents and their teens will allow each group to practice these vital communication skills. The event will conclude with a free concert for all in attendance by the Peterson Farm Brothers.&nbsp;Free commemorative t-shirts will be given to the first 100 teens who register, and refreshments will be served.

The event will be hosted by Ellis County 4-H Council and spearheaded by Hays High sophomores Elizabeth Noble, Marisa Wasinger, and John Weisenborn.&nbsp;Attendees will choose to attend sessions&nbsp;with discussions&nbsp;on The Future of Our Environment, Pros and Cons of&nbsp;Social Media,&nbsp;and Guns in America.&nbsp;This event is open to all teens.
