Cover Your Acres conference scheduled this month in NW Kan.

MANHATTAN — The Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) and K-State Research and Extension (KSRE) will offer virtual workshops February 6-10, 2023, to assist farmers’ market vendors and managers, and also for those wanting to sell food products directly to consumers. The workshop series includes five online Lunch and Learn sessions.

“Over the past two years, we’ve seen an increase in people’s enthusiasm for locally sourced food, and these workshops will address common questions and concerns for farmers and small businesses who are embracing these opportunities to reach local consumers,” said Londa Nwadike, food safety specialist with KSRE and the University of Missouri. “It’s also important for farmers to understand certain legal, safety and financial parameters before choosing to sell either directly to the consumer or at a farmers’ market.” In 2022, more than 95 farmers’ markets were registered with KDA’s Central Registration of Farmers’ Markets.

Hays veterinarian to be featured on SHPBS' 'Doctors on Call'

An afternoon of tea, finger sandwiches and pastries awaits you at the Hays Public Library Foundation Afternoon Tea Party from 2 to 4 p.m. on Feb. 5.

The tea party will include a variety of teas and other beverages. Several courses of tasty treats that complement the teas, including croissants and tarts donated by Cathy’s Breads, will be served.

The attire for an afternoon tea party is smart casual. Attendees, who want to fully embrace the experience, are encouraged to “dress to the tea.” That could include hats and gloves.

The event is a fundraiser for the Hays Public Library Foundation, which supports the library by assisting with unbudgeted needs. Throughout the last four and half years, Jake Gill has raised tens of thousands of dollars for non-profit organizations around the U.S. and the world.

Citizens are encouraged to bring real Christmas trees to the free disposal site located north of the Public Works building at 1002 Vine St. This area is right next to the bathrooms at Speier ball fields. Place the trees on the east side of the bathrooms.

Signs will be posted to direct citizens. &nbsp;

Please remove all plastic, ornaments and lights before leaving the tree. The disposal site will be open through Monday, Jan. 9, 2023. &nbsp;

Midwest Energy will provide personnel and a wood chipper to chip the trees to make mulch. The mulch will be placed at the Parks Department on the U.S. Highway 183 Bypass and is available for pickup free of charge.

ELLIS COUNTY RESIDENTS: Midwest Energy is asking its natural gas customers in Ellis County to conserve natural gas now through 11 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 25. This comes at the request of an interstate pipeline company that supplies natural gas to the area.

Customers are asked to lower thermostats 1-2 degrees and turn off gas fireplaces unless absolutely necessary.

Winter Storm Elliott's record gas flows have put pressure on natural gas supplies nationwide. On Saturday, temperatures will increase slightly, but the wind is forecast to drop off, requiring more electricity to be generated from natural gas.

Fort Larned announces holiday closure schedule

The Ellis County Sheriff's Office wants to remind residents of the special care their outdoor pet needs during the cold weather.&nbsp;

State law requires that all pets who spend time outside have access to adequate shelter and fresh water.

"The best place for our pets is in our home but we know that is not always possible," said Sheriff Scott Braun.&nbsp;

"We encourage all pet owners to take appropriate steps to protect those animals that may be left outside for long periods of time. Our office is prepared to investigate reports of animal neglect throughout this cold spell.&nbsp;

A few tips to meet the cold weather requirements include maintaining adequate shelter - like a doghouse with dry bedding such as straw, or a structure such as a garage or barn, and food and fresh water.

The meal will consist of roast beef, ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, corn, and a dinner roll. Christmas dinner is donated and cooked by the men of the VFW, who generously give their time Christmas Day, and prior, to prepare. The meal is free of charge, but donations are accepted. Donations that are received will be given to organizations that serve and assist area residents in an effort to "give back" all that has been given.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Community Christmas Dinner began with the vision to bring the community together for a Christmas meal, and to return to the true reason for the season — the remembrance and celebration of&nbsp;the birth of Jesus Christ. Christmas can quickly become overshadowed by the busyness that tends to arise with the holiday season, and focus loss regarding the true meaning.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Community Christmas Dinner offers a time to refocus on the birth of Christ, provides the opportunity for community members to serve and be served, and simply enjoy each other's company.&nbsp; Though Jesus is acknowledged, all are&nbsp;welcome regardless of personal beliefs. &nbsp;Service also extends&nbsp;beyond the walls of the VFW through the delivery of meals to those who are homebound.&nbsp; The Community Christmas Dinner stands upon the scripture that “Love never fails” (1 Corinthians 13:8), and the dinner has continued to be an example of this love, thanks to Christ’s leading and the volunteers who graciously give their time. City of Hays alters trash routes for Christmas holiday

The Kansas Department of Transportation has reopened Kansas 383 to traffic in Phillips County between Long Island and the U.S. 183 junction. The 6-mile section has been closed since March for reconstruction.

A final asphalt overlay on the road is planned for spring 2023.&nbsp;

The reconstruction is part of the T-WORKS project to reconstruct the 26-mile corridor between the east U.S. 36 junction in Norton County to U.S. 183 in Phillips County. Venture Corporation of Great Bend served as primary contractor for the $11.8 million project.

The 6-mile section has been closed since March for reconstruction.A final asphalt overlay on the road is planned for spring 2023.&nbsp;The reconstruction is part of the T-WORKS project to reconstruct the 26-mile corridor between the east U.S. 36 junction in Norton County to U.S. 183 in Phillips County. Venture Corporation of Great Bend served as primary contractor for the $11.8 million project.

TOPEKA –&nbsp;Safe Kids Kansas, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and program sponsor State Farm announce an opportunity for Kansas high schoolers to share their knowledge on safe driving and passenger practices. The Take It from a Teen video challenge is a unique way to hear from teenagers on how to reach teens with important road safety information that can prevent injuries and save lives. Each winning applicant/team will receive $100.

“The video challenge will be a great way for high schoolers in Kansas to use their creativity while spreading a positive message that could help save lives,” said&nbsp;Cherie Sage, Safe Kids Kansas state director.&nbsp;“We look forward to seeing what interesting, fun and humorous videos Kansas teens can create!”

Students can create a 45-60 second video that answers one of the following questions:

Videos must be submitted to Safe Kids Kansas via&nbsp;<a href="mailto:safekidskansas@ks.gov" target="_blank">email</a>&nbsp;by Friday, January 20, 2023.

Submissions must include age, address and the county of the participant. The videos will be judged based on the relevancy of the content, creativity, adherence to the time limit and contest rules. Six winners will be chosen and notified by email, and presentation of the check will be worked out. Winning videos be shared on Safe Kids social media in the coming weeks.
