GREAT BEND - The Barton Music Department will treat the community to the breathtaking piano playing of Chiara D’Odorico at 7:30 p.m. April 21 in the Fine Arts Auditorium, Barton Community College. Admission is free.

She will be presenting a program of Paraguayan classical music and will be joined by Argentinian pianist David Lonardi for some four-hand numbers. D’Odorico is from Paraguay and has played all over the world with numerous groups including the world-famous Orquesta Sinfonica de la Ciudad de Asuncion. She has performed in Brazil, Colombia, U.S., Italy, France, The Vatican, Spain, Austria, Russia, South Africa, Lebanon, and India. Some of the most distinguished venues include The Kennedy Center, Palácio Foz, Salón Dorado del Teatro Colón, Muziekgebouw Eindhoven, National Gallery of Canada, Palazzo Capizucchi, and Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya.&nbsp;

W. Kansas resident appointed to state 911 Coordinating Council

TOPEKA - Governor Laura Kelly announced Kansas is receiving a $1 million, one-year federal planning grant to support the transition of Community Mental Health Centers (CMHCs) to become Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics (CCBHC) capable of treating mental health and substance abuse crises through integrated physical-behavioral care. The funding comes from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

Kansas to get $1M grant for certified community behavioral health clinics

The Hays Fire Department will be inspecting and flow testing fire hydrants Friday in the area of Hall St. to Oak St. between 7th St. and 17th St. also Vine St. to Canterbury Dr. between 22nd St. and 33rd St. 

This is part of a coordinated effort by the city of Hays to inspect all fire hydrants in the city and flush all water mains annually.

 Inspecting fire hydrants ensures that the valves operate properly and that there is no damage or obstructions that will prevent or interfere with the prompt use of fire hydrants in an emergency. Firefighters are also checking the pressure and volume of water mains in each neighborhood for firefighting purposes. 

The associated flushing of water mains allows chlorine to be distributed throughout the system to eliminate bio-filming in the water mains. Slight discoloration of the water supply may be encountered although there will be no health risks to the consumer.&nbsp;

Alton's Life of Christ re-enactment set for April 9

DODGE CITY&nbsp;– The Kansas Department of Wildlife Parks’ Public Lands Division is partnering with the Kansas Forest Service and Hutchinson Community College Fire Science Program to conduct a wildland fire training and hazardous fuels mitigation project from April 1-7, 2023.

During the week-long training, public lands staff expect to host approximately 90-100 firefighters and multiple fire engines.

“Workshops of this nature provide wildland firefighters with critical skills and knowledge necessary to fight fire safely on a rural landscape,” said KDWP regional supervisor Manuel Torres. “By hosting at Historic Lake Scott State Park and Scott Wildlife Area, we’ll not only provide participants with real-life experience, but we’ll also reduce hazardous fuels on the properties while improving wildlife habitat at the same time.”

The wildland fire training and hazardous fuels reduction project started in 2005. Since then, more than 500 firefighters have been trained, and nearly 4,500 acres in Kansas have been mitigated with fuel breaks for wildfire, providing many other safety, habitat and ecological benefits.

The Hays Fire Department will be inspecting and flow testing fire hydrants on Thursday in the area of Lincoln Dr. to Elm St. between 33rd St. and 37th St., and also Hall St. to Columbine Dr. between 27th St. and 33rd St.

This month’s presentation,&nbsp;“Fishes, Senses, and Fishing,”&nbsp;is sponsored by FHSU’s Science and Mathematics Education Institute (SMEI). The presentation will begin at 7 p.m. at The Venue in Thirsty’s Brew Pub &amp; Grill, 2704 Vine.

Dr. William “Bill” Stark, professor of biological sciences at FHSU, will help everyone “dip their toes” in the water world of fish and explore some of the ways fish experience their world that is a bit different than our own. He will have some hands-on material. Participation of all ages is encouraged.
