The Kansas Department of Transportation will resume work on a portion of Kansas 383 in Phillips County starting the week of March 20.

Construction crews will be completing final surfacing and shoulder work on the 6-mile stretch that was reconstructed in 2022, starting 3 miles east of Long Island and ending at the U.S. 183 junction. Pavement markings and rumble strips will also be installed. 

During construction, traffic will be reduced to one lane and directed through the work zone by flaggers and a pilot car. Delays up to 15 minutes should be anticipated.

KDOT expects the work to be completed by mid-May, conditions permitting.

BROWNELL - Traffic changes are scheduled to start, Monday, March 20, along K-4 from the west city limits east to the east city limits of the city of Brownell. 

K-4 traffic will be reduced to one lane through the project area to replace the existing asphalt pavement with concrete.

LOGAN — A groundbreaking ceremony is planned for 1 p.m. March 22 for the LIFE building project in Logan.&nbsp; The groundbreaking will take place near the entrance to Logan High School football field.

The project, a unique, intergenerational facility will include a new 36-bed nursing home to replace the aging Logan Manor, a new Pre-K through fourth-grade elementary school, and a gymnasium and locker room complex. An indoor corridor will connect the new structure to the existing high school building to create a completely interconnected complex allowing the senior residents to have access to all school activities, ballgames, etc.&nbsp;

Additionally, the facility will include space that will serve not only the students and the senior residents, but also the broader community. Those spaces will include a weight room and wellness facility, a community room, and a multi-purpose room, which will double as a community storm shelter.

McCowen Gordon Construction Company based in Kansas City is the contractor. The construction is being funded by The Dane G. Hansen Foundation. A campaign for furnishings, fixtures and equipment is being coordinated by the Logan Community Development Foundation Inc.&nbsp;More than $775,000 has been raised to meet the local goal of $1 million.&nbsp;To donate to the campaign, contact Max Lowry, at (785) 689-8333 or email at<a href="mailto:loganlifecenter@gmail.com">loganlifecenter@gmail.com</a>. Groundbreaking scheduled for Logan’s LIFE project

A Kansas Department of Transportation project to improve a portion of U.S. 281 in Russell County is moving into its second year of work.

The three-year project began in May 2022 and will reconstruct and widen 11 miles of the highway starting near Land Road and ending at the west K-18 junction. Off-road work will continue through the 2023 construction season with minimal traffic impacts expected. Occasional lane closures may be necessary at times, and traffic will be directed through those work zones by flaggers.

KDOT currently plans to close the highway during the 2024 construction season. Further information about the closure and detour will be provided at a later date.

Kansas State Research and Extension Golden Prairie District is conducting a survey of 2022 farmland leasing arrangements for each of the counties within our district: Trego, Gove, and Logan.

These surveys are utilized to gain a better understanding of current conditions in our area related to rental arrangements.  Summary reports of the data will be available to all those who participate and will be shared as a general reference when requested by the public. The results will only be used in Golden Prairie District programming, with all individual responses kept strictly confidential.

If you would like to offer your leasing arrangement information to be used in our data, you may find them on our website to complete or stop in at one of our offices to obtain a printed version. 

After completing the survey, please return it to your local Golden Prairie District Office by Friday, March 31st, 2023. After the March 31st deadline, a summary of the collected surveys will be available on our page as well.

Golden Prairie Extension Dist. conducting farmland leasing survey

TOPEKA –&nbsp;For the first time in the twenty-year history of the Kansas Tobacco Quitline 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669), the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, (KDHE) is offering all phone coaching enrollees eight weeks of free nicotine replacement therapy while supplies last.

Participants who are 18 years and older that want to quit smoking, vaping or chewing tobacco and enroll in the phone coaching program can choose a lozenge, gum, or patch that will be mailed directly to their home if they enroll by midnight on Sunday, April 30.

“We want all tobacco users to know that although quitting is hard, they can do it,” said&nbsp;Matthew Schrock, cessation coordinator. “Individuals who smoke often try to quit several times before succeeding, but proven treatments and services are available that can improve your chances to quit for good. We encourage all Kansans to try to quit, and if they want free help, take advantage of this opportunity.”

The Kansas Tobacco Quitline is a free, 24/7 resource available to Kansas residents to help them quit smoking. The Quitline provides help, such as counseling, a personalized Quit Plan and quitting support by phone and through online services. A survey of Quitline users highlighted that 90% of participants were satisfied with the Quitline coaches and counselors. The Quitline can be reached by calling 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669).

Tom Krause, a motivational speaker will be giving a presentation titled "You Make A Difference" at the 100th Anniversary Celebration of the Daughters of Isabella Circle #254 in Hays.&nbsp; The celebration will begin at 5:30 pm on Saturday, April 22, at the Rose Garden Banquet Hall, 2350 E. Eighth.&nbsp;&nbsp;This event is open to the public.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Krause is best known for his contributions to the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" book series and is author of several other books, one of which is currently under movie production. Krause spent 20 years in the public school system and knows how to reach audiences of all ages with unforgettable presentations.

The Hays Fire Department will be inspecting and flow testing fire hydrants on March 15, 2023, in the area of Fort Hays State University campus to Walnut St. between 6th St. and 14th St. and Indian Trail to Cumberland Ave. between 22nd St. and 27th St. 

This is part of a coordinated effort by the city of Hays to inspect all fire hydrants in the city and flush all water mains annually.

Hydrant inspections by Hays Fire Dept. in two areas today

The city of Hays will temporarily convert the disinfectant used in the distribution system from chloramine to free chlorine. 

The conversion will begin on March 14th and continue through May 16th. 

During this period, you may experience taste and odor changes associated with this type of temporary disinfectant conversion.&nbsp;

Public water systems are required to properly disinfect their water and maintain an adequate disinfectant residual in the distribution system. 

Chloramine, free chlorine combined with ammonia, is widely used as a disinfectant because it persists for longer periods while also limiting the formation of disinfection by-product contaminants. Prolonged use of chloramine coupled with other factors that can impact water quality, such as high temperatures or reduced usage of water, may result in the growth and/or persistence of organic matter within the pipes of the distribution system, which may hinder the ability to maintain an adequate disinfectant residual. 

The Hays Fire Department is conducting their annual testing of all 1057 hydrants at the same time to rid distribution pipes of this organic matter and improve the quality of your water overall.

Please share this information with all people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly.

On Sunday, March 26, Jerry&nbsp;will perform a show of medieval Irish &amp; Scottish history and music called&nbsp;“Of Castles and Kings." This show will take place in the Sharon Springs High School Auditorium at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 26. (2:00p.m. MT).

Barlow’s music transports the listener across time and space on an imaginary journey to a rustic Irish fishing village or the misty Scottish Highlands or an enchanted English forest. He shares the history, legend and humor behind the music, bringing the songs alive. His expressive arrangements have been described as “music to soothe the soul, warm the heart, and lift the spirit." 

This program is sponsored in part by the Dane G. Hansen Foundation. Admission is with season ticket, or at the door; Adults, $10, Students, $5. There will be a school performance the following Monday in Sharon Springs.

Celtic guitarist Jerry Barlow to perform in northwest Kansas

The Hays Fire Department will be inspecting and flow testing fire hydrants Tuesday in the area of Vine St. to Hall St. between 27th St. and 33rd St. 

 Inspecting fire hydrants ensures that the valves operate properly and that there is no damage or obstructions that will prevent or interfere with the prompt use of fire hydrants in an emergency. 

Firefighters are also checking the pressure and volume of water mains in each neighborhood for firefighting purposes. 

The associated flushing of water mains allows chlorine to be distributed throughout the system to eliminate bio-filming in the water mains. Slight discoloration of the water supply may be encountered although there will be no health risks to the consumer. All reasonable efforts will be taken to minimize the inconvenience to the public.
