BUNKER HILL –&nbsp;The Sherman County Community Foundation has awarded Smoky Hills PBS with a grant for $1,500 to support the Smoky Hills PBS’ literacy initiative program in Sherman County.&nbsp;

The grant will support the following:&nbsp;&nbsp;

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Children’s Programming on Smoky Hills PBS

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Book distribution program that will provide books to children in head start and early head start programs in Sherman County.

“The Sherman County Community Foundation has been a longtime supporter of Smoky Hills PBS,” said Haley Gagnon, Smoky Hills PBS Special Events Coordinator. “It’s through the support of our communities and foundations like SCCF that Smoky Hills PBS is able to provide our youngest viewers with the resources they need to engage in a lifelong love of learning!”

Osborne blood drive set for Wednesday

HaysMed’s annual drive-through flu shot clinic has been scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 27. The event, which will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., will offer free flu shots for all residents older than 6 months. &nbsp;

For the safety of the public and also those working the flu drive, masks will be required for anyone age 2 or older. In addition, physical distancing will be observed at all locations on campus.

It will be the 21st year the hospital has offered the community service, and approximately 3,500 people are expected to be vaccinated during the free clinic.

People age 10 and up can receive their free flu shot without leaving their vehicles. HaysMed volunteers will direct traffic during the event.

Children 6 months through 9 years of age will be vaccinated on the west side of the Center for Health Improvement. Adults attending with children can also receive their shots in the same location.

More than 100 volunteers will be on hand to help with the event. HaysMed partners with Fort Hays State University and NCK Tech as both facilities provide students to help with the shots.

There will be no nasal flu vaccine at the drive-through flu shot clinic.&nbsp; There will be no egg-free vaccines available at the drive-through flu shot clinic. People with a severe egg allergy will need to contact their local healthcare provider for their flu vaccine. &nbsp;

The event is sponsored by the Hays Medical Center Foundation. While there is no cost for flu shots, participants are asked to bring a canned food item to benefit the Community Assistance Center.

The vaccine also is available at HaysMed clinics for patients who are unable to attend the drive-through flu shot event. Charges will apply at regular clinic visits, though the vaccine is covered by most health insurance plans.

Esther McMurtrie Memorial Golf Tournament at capacity

Downtown Hays Development Corporation and Gella's Diner are excited to present the fifth annual Farm to Fork Dinner Event on Oct. 15 inside the newly renovated Strand Event Center. This incredible five-course meal is always an unforgettable evening, and 2020 will be no different.

Gella's Diner &amp; Lb. Brewing Co. Executive Chef Manuel Hernandez will once again prepare the evening delicacies. Chef Hernandez delights in telling each course's story and takes guests on a journey through his experience with each dish. The menu will be announced via Facebook by the end of this week.

Each local grower and producer who contributes ingredients to the meal will also be recognized and thanked for their hard work and commitment to providing local food sources. Nearly every ingredient is thanks to Downtown Hays Market vendors and other local producers. Many of those vendors attend the event, so guests get to meet the farmers behind the food.&nbsp;

"This has always been one of my favorite events DHDC hosts," said Sara Bloom, DHDC Executive Director. "The atmosphere, the food, the people, just the concept, it's all so special. The Downtown Hays Market vendors work so hard throughout the year, and I'm glad we get to recognize and celebrate that in such a unique fashion."&nbsp;

The 2020 event will be the third time the event has been hosted inside the historic Strand Theatre, but the first time the venue has been completely restored.&nbsp;

"We've had this event in this building with no electricity, no restrooms, and limited space, and it's still been truly incredible," Bloom said. "Now, to get to have it with original restored ceilings, beautiful chandeliers, a stage, a balcony, just so much; I'm very excited."

Dustin and Laney Roths recently bought the over 5,000-square-foot building at 1102 Main. Much of the building's original look has been restored into the new design, bringing back much of the architectural touches. The Farm to Fork Dinner will only be the fourth event inside the Strand Event Center.

Dinner begins promptly at 6 p.m. with hors d'oeuvres and a local wine sampling. As guests arrive, each one will be entered into a drawing to win handcrafted gifts from various Downtown Hays Market vendors. The remaining courses will begin at 7:00 pm.&nbsp;

Traditionally tables at this event are set up in a classic banquet style setting or long rows of rectangle tables. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, this is the most significant change.

"This year has forced us to take many extra precautions with ourselves and our community's health and safety," said Allie Glidewell, DHDC Director of Events. "We like this event to feel like you're eating with family and hope you meet someone new. Unfortunately, this year, we will be separating tables to maintain as much physical distancing as possible, much like what you would see at local restaurants."

The first activity is the WALK10K, a Worldwide Walking Challenge.&nbsp; The goal of the walking challenge is to walk 10K or 6.2 miles during the week of September 14-20.

The second activity is MOVE150, which focuses on getting participants moving, regardless of their abilities.&nbsp; Participants are encouraged to complete 150 minutes of activity utilizing a variety of activities indicated on the MOVE150 card.

“Regular physical activity is one of the most important things you can do for your health”, says Stephanie Howie, Fitness Director at The Center for Health Improvement.&nbsp; “Being physically active is helpful for mind as well as body well-being, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.” &nbsp;

The goal of the Medical Fitness Association initiative is to promote an increase in physical activity levels in all ages and to highlight the medical fitness difference.&nbsp; During this international event medical fitness centers throughout the U.S., Canada, and Asia are offering resources and educational opportunities for their communities promoting the medical fitness difference and raising awareness of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

Center for Health Improvement sponsors challenge events

LOGAN — The Dane G. Hansen Foundation is pleased to announce a new, five-year pilot initiative for licensed childcare centers in northwest Kansas.

NW Kansas Cares for Kids includes three new grant opportunities for childcare centers that meet the following criteria:

Home-based day care businesses, licensed group homes and preschools are not eligible.&nbsp;

Grants from the Hansen Foundation are available only to nonprofit centers. For-profit centers that meet the above criteria can apply for similar assistance through the Northwest Kansas Economic Innovation Center, Inc. (<a href="http://www.nwkeici.org/" target="_blank">www.nwkeici.org</a>).

The initiative includes three new grants designed to assist childcare centers in attracting and retaining quality staff, as well as to provide the tools needed to educate young children so they start school ready to continue learning.

The Early Childhood Education Staff Support Grant is designed to provide financial recognition for early childhood staff, reduce costs associated with staff turnover, and stabilize the workforce. Fewer staff changes are also a quality factor for children attending the centers. The grant provides bonuses every 6 months for full-time (30 hours/week) staff who remain at the same center. Bonus amounts range from $250 to $800. In addition, center directors are provided funds for additional discretionary bonuses.

A second grant covers the cost of the comprehensive Montessori education curriculum, which includes training videos and instructions for teachers as well as time-tested, high-quality learning tools and manipulatives designed to last for many years. Each center may apply one time for up to $5,000 in materials.

The third grant in the initiative offers childcare centers up to $1,000 each year for up to 5 years to purchase high-quality children’s books to create or enhance the center’s library.&nbsp;

Grants will be awarded two times a year, in November and May.&nbsp; Applications will be accepted at any time but are due by&nbsp;October 30, 2020&nbsp;and&nbsp;April 25, 2021. Late applications will not be considered until the next deadline. Grants will be awarded annually in November and May for up to five years.&nbsp; The application is restricted to qualifying centers and requires an access code.

 </figure>SubmittedLOGAN — The Dane G. Hansen Foundation is pleased to announce a new, five-year pilot initiative for licensed childcare centers in northwest Kansas.NW Kansas Cares for Kids includes three new grant opportunities for childcare centers that meet the following criteria:<ol>
 <li>licensed by the State of Kansas for at least 13 children</li><li>accepting children ages 2-weeks to 6-years of age</li><li>open at least 3, and less than 24 hours a day</li><li>located within the Hansen Foundation’s 26-county service area</li>
 </ol>Home-based day care businesses, licensed group homes and preschools are not eligible.&nbsp;Grants from the Hansen Foundation are available only to nonprofit centers. For-profit centers that meet the above criteria can apply for similar assistance through the Northwest Kansas Economic Innovation Center, Inc. (<a href="http://www.nwkeici.org/" target="_blank">www.nwkeici.org</a>).The initiative includes three new grants designed to assist childcare centers in attracting and retaining quality staff, as well as to provide the tools needed to educate young children so they start school ready to continue learning.The Early Childhood Education Staff Support Grant is designed to provide financial recognition for early childhood staff, reduce costs associated with staff turnover, and stabilize the workforce. Fewer staff changes are also a quality factor for children attending the centers. The grant provides bonuses every 6 months for full-time (30 hours/week) staff who remain at the same center. Bonus amounts range from $250 to $800. In addition, center directors are provided funds for additional discretionary bonuses.A second grant covers the cost of the comprehensive Montessori education curriculum, which includes training videos and instructions for teachers as well as time-tested, high-quality learning tools and manipulatives designed to last for many years. Each center may apply one time for up to $5,000 in materials.The third grant in the initiative offers childcare centers up to $1,000 each year for up to 5 years to purchase high-quality children’s books to create or enhance the center’s library.&nbsp;Grants will be awarded two times a year, in November and May.&nbsp; Applications will be accepted at any time but are due by&nbsp;October 30, 2020&nbsp;and&nbsp;April 25, 2021. Late applications will not be considered until the next deadline. The Kansas Department of Transportation began a resurfacing project on 10 miles of I-70 in Thomas County on Friday.

Project work will consist of a mill and overlay in both the eastbound and westbound lanes starting near the Sherman County line and ending at exit 45 at Levant. Traffic will be reduced to one lane through the work zones with a lowered speed limit. Minor delays not exceeding five minutes should be expected.

KDOT anticipates work to be completed by mid-November, weather permitting.

Venture Corporation of Great Bend is the primary contractor for the $5.6 million project.&nbsp;

The 8th Annual Blaine Billinger Poker Run will take place on Saturday, October 10 with registration at 11:00 a.m. at the Horseshoe Grill &amp; Bar in Hays. 

 The route will go east to Waudby's in Russell, south to That 'New' Place in Olmitz, back west to Greg's Sports Pub &amp; Grub in Rush Center, then finish the day back at the Horseshoe in Hays. 

 It's always a fun event and we invite everyone to come out and join us.

This is the 40th Phillips County "Old Fashioned Republican Picnic" which is a little different this year. We are at the Huck Boyd Center in Phillipsburg and will have homemade ice cream instead of chicken. 

Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt and 1st District GOP congressional candidate Tracey Mann will speak along with other state and local candidates. 

We will be social distance and have masks if you would like to wear one; they are not required in Phillips County. We will also have hand sanitizer. 

This is an opportunity to meet your representatives on a personal level. This election is important and this is a great way to meet those on the ballot.&nbsp;

Work will consist of a 1-inch mill and 2-inch overlay beginning at the east city limits in Sharon Springs and ending at the Logan County line. Traffic will be directed through the work zone by flaggers and a pilot car during daylight hours, and minor delays should be expected.

The Ellis County Drug Court team is proud to announce its second graduation for those completing the requirements of drug treatment court.

The graduation is at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Ellis County Courthouse. Due to COVID, the court is having to limit who attends graduation in person, but it is streaming the event live on YouTube.
