First District congressional candidate Tracey Mann will hold a meet and greet at Astra Bank, 1100 Fort, from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. Tuesday. 

He will be joined by Mary Eisenhower, granddaughter of President Dwight Eisenhower, at the campaign event.&nbsp; On Monday, Mary endorsed Tracey saying, "Tracey Mann embodies all the traits that my grandfather, President Eisenhower valued in public servants – honesty, integrity and working hard for the people you serve. It is an honor for me to endorse Tracey Mann for Congress."

BUNKER HILL–&nbsp;The Heartland Community Foundation has awarded Smoky Hills PBS with a grant for $1,500 to support their literacy leadership initiative.

The literacy leadership initiative is an effort from Smoky Hills PBS to engage and inspire children to be ready and eager to learn.&nbsp; One component of literacy leadership is the First Book Club, in which we give free books to children enrolled in Head Start.&nbsp; With these funds, more than 100 children in Trego, Rooks and Ellis counties who are enrolled in Head Start will receive books during the 2020-21 school year. For some, these books will be the only ones that they own. The goal of providing these books is to encourage parents to read with their children regularly.

“Smoky Hills PBS is dedicated to offering curriculum-based media to meet the needs of today’s kids, and the First Book Club takes that one step further,” said Haley Gagnon, Special Event Coordinator for Smoky Hills PBS. “Not only do we provide educational content through PBS KIDS programming, but we are also putting educational materials in children’s hands, providing them the tools they will need for a lifelong love of learning!”

The Heartland Community Foundation was founded in 2007, to serve as a vehicle for charitable giving benefiting Ellis, Rooks and Trego Counties.&nbsp; The Foundation is a permanent source of charitable assets to meet both emerging and existing needs of the local communities.&nbsp; The Heartland Community Foundation is an affiliate of the Greater Salina Community Foundation.

“Malinda has made a huge impact within the communities we serve in central and western Kansas,” said Michael Quade, Smoky Hills PBS interim general manager, “She has not just brought members to our station but turned those members into friends. That’s what she has done throughout her impressive 28-year career, left a strong legacy, and her kindness and smile that our members turned to throughout the years is going to be greatly missed!”

“I have been blessed to be able to work for Smoky Hills PBS for the past 28 years where I have built some of the most memorable relationships,” said Walker.&nbsp; “I want to thank the Smoky Hills PBS members, volunteers, staff, and board for giving me the opportunity to serve them for almost three decades.”

Smoky Hills PBS membership director announces retirement

WICHITA — Wichita State University has announced the names of more than 3,700 students who were on the WSU dean's honor roll for spring 2020.

To be included on the dean's honor roll, a student must be enrolled full time (at least 12 credit hours) and earn at least a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

WSU enrolls about 16,000 students and offers more than 50 undergraduate degree programs in more than 150 areas of study in six undergraduate colleges.

NW Kan. students earn distinction at Wichita State University

COLBY — Students will have access to personal protection equipment and follow new protocols when classes begin Aug. 17 at Colby Community College. It will be the first time the campus is open to the general student population since CCC abruptly halted face-to-face classes on March 12 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

"Colby Community College is diligently working to ensure that our campus is as safe and as prepared as it can be for the fall semester," said CCC President Dr. Seth Carter. "We continually evaluate our operational plan and make the necessary changes to ensure the safety of our employees, students, and the communities we serve."

On Monday, Dr. Carter sent an email to students with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.colbycc.edu/about/public-info/covid-19/student-plan.html">a plan</a>&nbsp;that details daily operations as well as procedures for quarantining and isolating.&nbsp;

Every custodian has one for their respective buildings, as well as the fleet director to use for sanitizing buses and vehicles.</li><li>Staggering schedules to reduce the number of students in the cafeteria at one time.</li>

CCC boosts safety for fall semester

RUSSELL — The final performances of Ad Astra Music Festival’s 2020 virtual season take place this weekend. The festival continues to bring outstanding music to its audience by streaming performances free of charge on its <a href="https://www.facebook.com/adastramusicfestival">Facebook page</a>. Music lovers from across the globe can enjoy these final concerts without ever having to leave their homes.&nbsp;

First, on Friday, July 24, at 7:30 pm CDT, Ad Astra presents a performance by the High School and Community Virtual Choirs.

 Ad Astra is proud to have given high school students from around the world the opportunity to perform a cappella pop and jazz arrangements in small groups. Over the course of two weeks, the students were led by industry professionals to explore the styles, trends, and approaches to this genre. 

When asked about her experience with this program, Caitlin Leiker, a senior at Hays High School, said “The A Cappella Intensive was such a fun and engaging learning experience! I feel like Ad Astra is really rising above the odds by finding new ways to overcome our world’s circumstances through collaborative projects such as this. I know I can speak for the other participants by saying how much we appreciate the time and effort that went into it. After participating in other virtual attempts to recreate the choir experience, Ad Astra provided something the others didn’t—connection.”

Following the High School Virtual Choir, the Russell Community Choir will sing the finale to the night’s performance. Tune in to be inspired by the next generation of musicians.

Finishing off the 2020 virtual season on Saturday, July 24, at 7:30 pm CDT, Ad Astra presents “Trudy Furney Opera: A Sneak Peak.” We commissioned composer Anna Pidgorna and librettist Maria Reva to create an opera about the life of beloved Russell High School art teacher Trudy Furney.

The opera will be premiered in full next year at Prairiesta, but this year Ad Astra is giving its audience a sneak peak that provides a look at their creative process, complete with interviews and sketches, and culminating with a workshop performance of scenes from the opera. 

Katelyn Mattson-Levy, set to play Trudy herself, said, “The more I learn about the life of Trudy, the more I learn to love the woman behind the stories. Her legacy is still fresh in the minds and hearts of students and her community, and this opera is a portrait of those memories.”&nbsp; Don’t forget to watch the exciting finale to our 2020 season!

Hays High senior to perform with Ad Astra Virtual Choir Friday

A local job fair has been a topic for several months as several local employers are hiring. With COVID-19 concerns, Grow Hays, KansasWorkd Hays, Work Hays and Big Creek Crossing have been brainstorming for alternatives to the typical job fair event.&nbsp;

In our discussions, we came up with a county-wide event that allows employers to remain at their businesses and abide by their rules regarding how applications are accepted. The event will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6.&nbsp;

Employers interested in participating will send information to be compiled and promoted via websites, social media, news articles, emails, etc..&nbsp; A "map" of all participating employers will be created and made available to job seekers. Job seekers can either apply online or go to the employer during the event to apply. &nbsp;

Business sign-up deadline for Ellis Co. Job Fair is Thursday

The Hays Masonic Lodge, in Partnership with the Kansas Masonic Foundation, is raffling off a restored 1959 Chevy El Camino.  The car will be showcased at Hays Chevrolet from Wednesday through Friday and downtown Saturday morning, but the ticket sales run until next March. 

The cost of the ticket is $20, with $15 from each ticket sold by Hays Lodge returning to Ellis County. Tickets are available at Hays Chevrolet, downtown on Saturday, online at <a href="https://kansasmasonic.foundation/">https://kansasmasonic.foundation/</a> (please put Hays in the comment), or from members of the Hays Lodge 195, who can be contacted by calling (785) 625-3127, or on Facebook.

Over the four years that this statewide raffle has been held, $750,000 has been redistributed to local Lodges who then use the money for projects in their communities. For Hays Masonic Lodge #195, that means donations to the Community Assistance Center, the Firefighters Relief Association, to help them buy and display Hays' first fire truck, and to help fund a free cancer screening that is scheduled for August, along with other charitable projects that they do throughout the year.

Building a stomp rocket, constructing a kaleidoscope, and taking a Zoom-powered photo are among the activities created by Fort Hays State University’s Kansas Wetlands Education Center to entertain and educate budding young scientists over the summer.&nbsp; The KWEC will host Drop-In STEM and Raspberry Pi Jams for students who would like to get involved with the environment and technology. Admission is free, and equipment will be provided.&nbsp; The KWEC is located 10 miles northeast of Great Bend along Kansas Highway 156 at Cheyenne Bottoms. Most of the activities will be outdoors. CDC guidelines will be followed, and events are subject to change, depending on COVID-19 conditions.&nbsp; Drop-In STEM–&nbsp;Friday, July 24, noon to 4:30 p.m. Roller coasters, bubbles, water balloons, sunshine, and snakes – all vital components for having a great summer. If you have a concern that your child may have a developmental delay or be in need of special education services, call for a free developmental screening. 

Children from ages birth to school age that live in Ellis or Rush Counties are eligible to be screened. Speech, Language, vision, hearing, thinking, self-help, behavior and motor development will be checked.

The screenings will be held on Friday, August 14th and Friday August 28th. 

Call Hays Area Children’s Center at 785-625-3257 to set up a free developmental screening appointment for your child.

These developmental screenings are offered monthly and sponsored by the Hays Interagency Coordination Council and USD 489.

Ellis High School announces 2020 scholarship winners

Hays High School has set its graduation for 10 a.m. Saturday, July 25, outside of the school.

A stage will be set up facing the student parking lot. There will be a small tent for parents who wish to set closer to the stage and also another small tent set up for guests with special needs who will need to be in the shade.

All others guests are asked to sit in the student parking area. They can bring their own chairs from home or use chairs that have been loaned to the school by the Wild West Festival committee.

Martin Staub, HHS principal, strongly encouraged families to sit together, but to social distance from other families.

The students will be asked to wear masks during the ceremony and their chairs will be spaced for social distancing. Guests are encouraged to wear masks, but they are not required.

The ceremony will be projected onto a large outdoor screen for those sitting in the parking lot. The graduation will also be live streamed on the <a href="http://www.hayshighindians.com/">HHS website</a>.

Parking attendants will be on-hand to direct traffic. Straub said he thought the high school will have plenty of room to seat all of the guests and accommodate parking.

HHS will be graduating about 175 students this year. During past graduations, HHS has hosted as many as 2,000 guests at ceremonies at Gross Memorial Coliseum.

However, Straub said he doubted that many people would attend the July 25 ceremony. He speculated some family members and friends will chose to watch the ceremony via live stream.

In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be moved indoors to the HHS gym A. If this happens, the school will be forced to restrict the number of guests for each student to no more than four.&nbsp;

"If we have to, we will set up in gym A if a storm comes through," Straub said. "We have become very flexible in the las five months. We’ll figure it out."

Seniors should have received an email with details of the graduation. Anyone who has questions, can call HHS at 785-623-2600.

Project Graduation will continue as scheduled on the evening of graduation.

The event will be open to students and their parents. Much of the event will be staged outside, weather permitting, Straub said.

"I am confident if we have a nice starry night, we will have that outside," he said. "It is good for safety and will add to the atmosphere to mark historically what these kids went through."

 <li>Attached are two maps of HHS in an attempt to help you understand our plan for the day.</li><li>We have hired parking managers who will help fill the HHS front and back parking lots and several grass areas on campus. Please park where they ask you to park.</li><li>A professional stage with quality sound has been secured for the event. See map’s yellow box for location.</li><li>We have rented a 40’ x 60’ tent for parents &amp; HHS staff (see blue box labeled “Parents”) in an attempt to provide some shade. ONLY parents/guardians/HHS staff will be allowed to sit here. Obviously, parents/guardians aren’t required to sit here; we’re just trying to provide you the second best (graduates get best seats) area to view the event with shade.</li><li>We have rented a 20’ x 40’ tent for our HHS Staff and guests with special needs because of age or other physical impairment (see blue box labeled “Special Needs”). Please, ONLY the person with special needs should sit in this area.</li><li>All other guests will sit on chairs in the parking lot.&nbsp; We are borrowing over 1000 chairs from the Wild West Festival folks (THANK YOU WWF!) and they will be available for guests to place in a manner they are most comfortable with regarding social distancing.&nbsp;&nbsp;We STRONGLY encourage everyone to social distance between families but also understand that your family will want to sit together.&nbsp; We will not “police” this but beg you to cooperate with one another and keep distance between families.</li><li>Graduates and guests are certainly welcome and encouraged to wear masks but are not required to do so.</li><li>Please feel free to bring your own folding chair if you worry the WWF chairs will not meet your needs; we are limited in the number that will be available.&nbsp; We will have the guest seating area cordoned off beginning Friday morning… you’re welcome to check out the setup if you like.</li><li>You’re encouraged to bring an umbrella for shade.&nbsp; Please do not obstruct the view of the stage for others.  </ol>Inclement Weather:<ol>
 <li>It’s July in Hays, KS, so we like our odds, but we must be prepared for inclement weather on the day of the event.&nbsp; Here’s the hard part…</li><li>If stormy weather requires a change of plans, the alternate site for the ceremony will be in our HHS Gym A.</li><li>If Gym A is used, we will have to limit the number of guests, for each graduate, who can attend in person. Each graduate would be given the same number of tickets and a ticket would be required for each person to enter.&nbsp; We will work with the Ellis County Health Department in determining the number of tickets per graduate if plan B is needed. Whether the ceremony is inside or outside, the ceremony will be livestreamed.</li><li>If Gym A is used, the number allowed to attend will be less than the facility capacity to allow for social distancing.&nbsp; We will STRONGLY encourage all attendees to wear a mask.</li><li>I’ve never felt the need to pray for good hot and dry Kansas weather during the last week in July in Hays, KS&nbsp;until this year.</li>

Hays High sets outdoor graduation for July 25

Folks, our annual pancake feed and raffle was postponed just like many activities this year. 

Guess what, we still have all the prizes and all of the food and we are ready to have some fun. 

We decided to have a Cruise Main for Pancakes. 

The plan is to have a drive thru to get your meals and to buy chances on the raffle. We then are planning a live video to have the drawing.

 </figure>Folks, our annual pancake feed and raffle was postponed just like many activities this year. Guess what, we still have all the prizes and all of the food and we are ready to have some fun. We decided to have a Cruise Main for Pancakes. The plan is to have a drive thru to get your meals and to buy chances on the raffle. We then are planning a live video to have the drawing.

STOCKTON — The Rooks County Free Fair board convened Tuesday evening to discuss the fate of the 2020 fair. 

  This difficult decision was not taken lightly.

 The board weighed the circumstances of safety, cancellation of event partners, manpower to operate, and the increase in area COVID-19 cases.

  The board voted 15-6 to hold a 4-H Fair with ALL 4-H to be judged, along with a Livestock Auction. 

All other events and vendors are cancelled. 

 The Rooks County Free Fair has a rich history of being one of the best county fairs in the state.  We wish to continue this tradition as we move forward and look to the future of the 142nd fair.

Breathe is currently distributing boxes to these families twice a month and need your help to continue their efforts.

2020 Ellis High School Graduation Information:<ul>
 <li>The ceremony will take place at the Ellis High School Football field stating at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 18</li><li>If inclement weather is predicted, an announcement will be made by 9 a.m. Friday, July 17, 2020 on the graduation location.&nbsp; The back up facility is the Ellis High School gym with limited tickets.</li><li>The parking lot will open at 8:30 am.&nbsp; There will be parking attendants onsite to assist with parking.</li><li>Pictures will be taken by Leann’s Photos. Please note that Leann’s Photos will also take pictures of the graduates receiving their diplomas. Parents and guest will not be allowed on the football field for pictures during the ceremony.</li><li>Graduation will be live-streamed. The link is listed below:</li>

Ellis High School graduation set for Saturday

DSNWK is proud to sponsor the 8th
Annual&nbsp;&nbsp; Dash&nbsp;&nbsp; for&nbsp;&nbsp;
Disabilities&nbsp;&nbsp; Fun Run.&nbsp; The run is scheduled for Saturday, August 1st
at 8:00 a.m. on the West side of the Hays Aquatic Park (4th and Main).&nbsp; Registration will begin at 7:15 a.m.&nbsp; 

There is still time to register for this
fun event for an entry fee of only $10 on or before July 29th. Day-of
registration will be a $12 entry fee. 

This run will consist of your choice of a
1 mile run/walk or a 5K run/walk. 

The run is for people of all abilities,
will not be timed, and the proceeds will go to help support the programs
coordinated by the Hays Recreation Commission that support people with
intellectual and developmental&nbsp;&nbsp;
disabilities.&nbsp;&nbsp; The run helps make
the programs free or inexpensive for participants.&nbsp;

Dash 4 Disabilities fast approaching

We have a sharp increase in COVID-19 cases in Ellis County and&nbsp;based
 on information and recommendations from our local medical community, we
 have made the difficult decision to cancel the in-person auction event 
and move ACE 2020 to an online platform.&nbsp;Because of the social 
aspect of ACE (which is really what made the decision so difficult) we 
cannot provide adequate precautions in the space available to safely 
host nearly 500 guests.

A HUGE thank you&nbsp;to Hays Medical Center and The 
HaysMed Foundation for your help to scramble, sponsor, and quickly help 
us move the auction online!

There are some wonderful benefits that the online format provides 
and our hope is that because of the support of so many, we will still 
have a great auction for the school! The Dreiling Trust matching funds 
are still available on gifts to Item #60 and raffle tickets can be 
purchased all the way until the drawing on Saturday evening. The auction
 is no longer limited to only those attending, any supporter, anywhere 
in the world, can now benefit the school by bidding on the items!

Each $100 ticket holder to the auction will automatically be given 
raffle tickets for the cash prizes. If you would like a different 
arrangement, including refunds, please contact the Alumni office at 
(785) 650-4514 or <a href="mailto:alumni@tmpmarian.org" target="_blank">alumni@tmpmarian.org</a>. We need to hear from you by Wednesday, July 15 if you do not wish your tickets to be entered into the raffle.Here is what ACE will look like this year.

Friday July 17th from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm,&nbsp;all of 
the auction items (both oral and silent) will be on display in Al 
Billinger Fieldhouse. Those that wish to view the items in-person before
 bidding are welcome to come but images of each item will be online when
 the auction is available. There will be no food or beverage service 
during this open house.

The online auction will be open for bidding beginning at&nbsp;9:00 am on Friday, July 17th through Saturday, July 18th at 10:00 pm. Bidding for items will close at various times through the evening on Saturday.&nbsp;Contributions to Item #60&nbsp;will be available for the duration of the online event. A “live”&nbsp;Raffle drawing will be done via the TMP-M website at 10:00 pm on 7/18.

Sunday, 7/19, 11:00 am – 4:00 pm, purchased items will be available for pickup at Al Billinger Fieldhouse.&nbsp;We
 will have volunteers available to help retrieve your items. If you are 
are unable to come during this time arrangements for temporary storage 
can be made by contacting the Alumni office. The school will not be able
 to facilitate the shipment of any items.
