Hays Municipal Court suspends appearances 

The Hays Toy Show will be accepting new toys for the Teaming up for Tots program at its event this weekend at the Rose Garden Banquet Hall.

The show will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The event will also be donating $1 from each admission to the program.

Admission is $3. Children 10 years old and younger will be admitted free.

All funds and toys donated will stay in Ellis County to be given to needy children at Christmas.

The event will feature new and vintage toys. The show has about 25 vendors registered.

Some of the items you will likely find include Hot Wheels, cast iron, farm toys, sports cards, model kits, trains, dolls, NASCAR, action figures, tin toys, Star Wars and Star Trek collectibles, and slot cars.

The event is usually conducted in the spring, but it was delayed because of COVID. Show goers are encourages to wear masks and hand sanitizing stations will be available.&nbsp;

Fort Hays Historic Museum annual giveaway fundraiser underway

Organizers for Operation Christmas Child have announced that prayer walks will be held at the two shoe box drop-off sites in Hays on Monday, Nov. 16.

Operation Christmas Child is a ministry of Samaritan’s Purse, an international Christian relief organization headquartered in Boone, N.C.&nbsp;&nbsp;Each year&nbsp;thousands of individuals pack shoe boxes with toys, school supplies and hygiene items that are sent to needy children around the world to demonstrate God’s love for them in a tangible way.

Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child has collected and delivered more than 178 million gift-filled shoe boxes to children in more than 160 countries and territories. For many children, this is the first gift they have ever received.

National Collection Week is Nov. 16-23. Rachel Albin of Hays, Northwest Kansas area director, said that because of the pandemic, shoe box collection would be handled a bit differently this year.&nbsp;&nbsp;Donors will be greeted at all curbside drop-offs by volunteers wearing personal protection equipment, she said.

In 2019, a total of 8,715 shoe boxes were collected in Northwest Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;The goal in 2020 is 9,500 shoe boxes, Albin said.

Hays has two collection sites.&nbsp;&nbsp;They are&nbsp;Messiah Lutheran Church, 2000 Main &nbsp;St.&nbsp;&nbsp;Collections times there are:

TMP-Marian FFA annual fundraiser is underway 

KANSAS CITY – Attention, all photography lovers and fans of the rural way of life:&nbsp;<a href="https://kumcruralhealth.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_1XGHzMNGquu8UQt" target="_blank">sign up</a>&nbsp;to vote for the winners of the 15th&nbsp;Annual Rural Kansas Photography Contest, sponsored by Rural Health and Education Services at the University of Kansas Medical Center.&nbsp;

The 15th&nbsp;annual contest winners will be decided by voters who sign up before Nov. 19 to judge the six finalists in each of these six categories:&nbsp;&nbsp;

On Nov. 19, those individuals who already have signed up to vote will receive an email directing them to a website link where they may view the photos and choose their favorites.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The contest is held in recognition of National Rural Health Day, which is celebrated Nov. 19. For previous celebrations, votes were collected at face-to-face receptions and online. Because of COVID-19 concerns, all voting was moved online this year.&nbsp;

“We of course miss the opportunity to recognize National Rural Health Day by gathering together, but we’re delighted that we already had online voting in place,” said Jenifer Yuza, marketing and resource manager for KU Medical Center’s Rural Health and Education Services.&nbsp;

“We encourage all Kansans to take advantage of this opportunity to see some wonderful photography honoring our great state and the people in it,” she said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Kansas Department of Transportation will begin work on a bridge replacement project on K-18 in Russell County the week of Nov. 16.

The bridge is located just east of the east U.S. 281 junction near Luray. Work this winter will consist of constructing a shoofly detour in preparation for the bridge closure and replacement that will begin in March 2021. The project is expected to be fully completed in December 2021, weather permitting.

L&amp;M Contractors of Great Bend is the primary contractor for the $1.4 million project.&nbsp;

Organizers are taking reservations for the free Community Thanksgiving Feast until Saturday, Nov. 14.&nbsp;&nbsp;“Meals cannot be guaranteed for people who do not pre-register,” said the Rev. Celeste Lasich, head of the organizing committee.

The feast will be a drive-through, food pick-up event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26, at Gella’s Diner, 117 E. 11th&nbsp;St.&nbsp;

In addition, First Call for Help will be delivering meals that day to its Meals on Wheels clients, the elderly, homebound, disabled, and quarantined individuals through contactless delivery.&nbsp;&nbsp;To sign-up for the free delivery service, individuals who meet one of those criteria may call First Call for Help at 785-623-2800.

Important COVID-19 information for donors

The Red Cross&nbsp;is&nbsp;testing blood, platelet and plasma donations for COVID-19 antibodies. The test may indicate if the donor’s immune system has produced antibodies to this coronavirus, regardless of whether an individual developed COVID-19 symptoms.&nbsp;Red Cross antibody tests will be helpful to identify individuals who have COVID-19 antibodies and may now help current coronavirus patients in need of convalescent plasma transfusions. Convalescent plasma is a type of blood donation collected from COVID-19 survivors that have antibodies that may help patients who are actively fighting the virus.

COVID-19 antibody test results will be available&nbsp;within one to two weeks in the Red Cross Blood Donor App or donor portal at RedCrossBlood.org. A positive antibody test result does not confirm infection or immunity.&nbsp;The Red Cross is not testing donors to diagnose illness, referred to as a diagnostic test. To protect the health and safety of Red Cross staff and donors, it is important that individuals who do not feel well or believe they may be ill with COVID-19 postpone donation.

The test may indicate if the donor’s immune system has produced antibodies to this coronavirus, regardless of whether an individual developed COVID-19 symptoms.&nbsp;Red Cross antibody tests will be helpful to identify individuals who have COVID-19 antibodies and may now help current coronavirus patients in need of convalescent plasma transfusions. Convalescent plasma is a type of blood donation collected from COVID-19 survivors that have antibodies that may help patients who are actively fighting the virus.COVID-19 antibody test results will be available&nbsp;within one to two weeks in the Red Cross Blood Donor App or donor portal at RedCrossBlood.org. If you have a concern that your child may have a developmental delay or be in need of special education services, call for a free developmental screening.

 Children from ages birth to school age who live in Ellis or Rush Counties are eligible to be screened. 

Speech, language, vision, hearing, thinking, self-help, behavior and motor development will be checked.

The screenings will be held on Friday, November 13, 2020. 

Call Hays Area Children’s Center at 785-625-3257 to set up a free developmental screening appointment for your child. 

These developmental screenings are offered monthly and sponsored by the Hays Interagency Coordination Council and USD 489.

at 9:00 a.m.(CST) with the launch of our spectacular silent auction. Auction
bidding will be open until Saturday evening, November 14 at 10:00 p.m. (CST),

take a deep dive into the behind the scenes work of Jana’s Campaign!
