RUSSELL - The next art exhibition at the Deines Cultural Center (DCC) opens Friday, September 25.

Selected works by Shelly Pinto will be on display Sept. 25 through Nov. 1.

After graduating from Kansas City Art Institute CAI with a painting degree and working at Hallmark Cards, Shelly Pinto&nbsp;co-founded with her husband a handmade paper company called Shizen Design. The company designs and sells screen print papers from India.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She uses these papers in her mixed media paintings. The merging of the exotic surface patterns and the culture of India has imparted designs that blend together her history and cultural experiences to create a truly international and unique vision in her artwork.

Pinto grew up going to Russell to visit as a small child. Her grandmother always wanted her to show her art at the Deines.

She&nbsp;is bringing a selection of her mixed media paintings to fulfill her grandmother's wishes.

The Deines Cultural Center is located at&nbsp;820 N. Main Street in Russell.

The galleries are open noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

maintenance project will take place on Commerce Parkway between I-70 and 27th Street.
Repairs will begin at 8:30 a.m. Thursday and will reopen every day at 4 p.m. until the project is completed. During repairs, traffic will be restricted to one lane.

project area of Commerce Parkway will allow two-way traffic and will have flaggers to direct
traffic. Drivers should expect a short delay in travel time. Motorists traveling in the affected
area should use alternate routes of travel until the project has been completed.

The Heartland Community Foundation (HCF), which serves
Ellis, Rooks and Trego counties, is accepting applications for fall grants.


Online applications opened September 15 and are due Sunday, November 15, 2020.

 Last
fall, the foundation awarded Redbud Village nursing care, Plainville, funding to update their dining
facilities. This provided a comfortable atmosphere for residents, staff and
guests. 

“Our residents look forward to inviting their family to see the new
furniture and enjoy a meal. Without the help of the foundation, our residents
would still be using the old restaurant style tables, that were loose, chipped
and unsightly,” said grantee Megan Zahn. 

This year, over $190,000 is available
to charitable projects in Ellis, Rooks and Trego Counties, with more than $50,000
available per county. This cycle will fund local community projects that meet
one or more of the following criteria:

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
Projects focused on improving quality of life

the Rooks County Legacy Fund, and the Trego County Legacy Fund.

Grants are limited to projects in Ellis, Rooks and Trego
counties and will be awarded through a competitive application process.


Nonprofit organizations, including government and public entities, educational

The United Way of Ellis County (UWEC) announces the opening of the 2021 CARE Council application process. 

Any 501(c)(3) that provides services in Ellis County is eligible to apply. The services must meet one of the three criteria of education, health, and financial stability.

The CARE Council is made up of 12 community volunteers who review the applications to determine funding for the United Way of Ellis County, City of Hays Social Service Funds and Alcohol Tax Funds, and Ellis County Alcohol Tax Funds.

There will be a Zoom meeting for those interested in applying for funding on Wednesday, September 23 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. to learn about the online application process.

Beginning Wednesday, General Custer will be closed from Downing to Centennial Blvd. in Hays.

 This is the second phase of a project to reconstruct General Custer from 22nd Street to Centennial. 

Construction is expected to last several weeks.

RUSSELL - The next art exhibition at the Deines Cultural Center opens Friday, September 25.

Selected works by Shelly Pinto will be on display September 25 through November 1.

After graduating from KCAI with a painting degree and working at Hallmark Cards, Shelly Pinto&nbsp;co-founded with her husband a handmade paper company called Shizen Design. The company designs and sells screen print papers from India.&nbsp;&nbsp;She uses these papers in her mixed media paintings. The merging of the exotic surface patterns and the culture of India has imparted designs that blend together her history and cultural experiences to create a truly international and unique vision in her artwork.

Shelly grew up going to Russell to visit as a small child. Her grandmother always wanted her to show her art at the Deines.

Charity golf tourney to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters

Like many organizations this year, the Volga German Centennial Association and organizers of Oktoberfest Hays have had to make adjustments. The 2020 Oktoberfest Hays REVISION plan replaces the traditional event in Municipal Park with smaller events at local restaurants.&nbsp;

As each restaurant will have limited capacity, Oktoberfest fans are encouraged to join in virtually via Facebook Live and participate by supporting these restaurants throughout the entire month of October.&nbsp;

Event organizers’ goal for 2020 is to still offer the community a way to celebrate German traditions, but without the large crowds. Each participating restaurant will offer a special German menu item or an Oktoberfest-themed beer. Defiance Brewing Co. brewed a German Hefeweizen beer for the occasion, called “Hayzenbraü,” which will be available at multiple locations. In addition, these restaurants will donate a portion of their proceeds to a local nonprofit organization in hopes to offset those organization’s fundraising losses incurred this year.

All restaurants are responsible for abiding by city ordinances that require masks, occupant capacity requirements, and social distancing.

Oktoberfest Punch Cards will be on hand at participating restaurants. When customers purchase food (dine in or to go) at these locations through October 31, 2020 they will receive a punch. Once a card is filled, customers can fill in their contact information on the back of the card, and drop it into one of the boxes at any of the participating sponsor locations for a chance to win Oktoberfest prizes.

Revised Oktoberfest offers up full schedule of events

TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment on Saturday rescinded a boil water advisory for
Ellis County Rural Water District 1C public water supply. The advisory was issued because of a
loss of pressure in the distribution system.


Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system
failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water
advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.


Laboratory testing samples collected from Ellis Co. RWD 1C indicate no evidence of bacteriological
contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by
KDHE officials to be resolved.

BUNKER HILL –&nbsp;The Sherman County Community Foundation has awarded Smoky Hills PBS with a grant for $1,500 to support the Smoky Hills PBS’ literacy initiative program in Sherman County.&nbsp;

The grant will support the following:&nbsp;&nbsp;

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Children’s Programming on Smoky Hills PBS

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Book distribution program that will provide books to children in head start and early head start programs in Sherman County.

“The Sherman County Community Foundation has been a longtime supporter of Smoky Hills PBS,” said Haley Gagnon, Smoky Hills PBS Special Events Coordinator. “It’s through the support of our communities and foundations like SCCF that Smoky Hills PBS is able to provide our youngest viewers with the resources they need to engage in a lifelong love of learning!”
