On this episode of&nbsp;Traveling Kansas, we take a tour of the county and visit Wilson Lake, the Fossil Station Museum and the Deines Cultural Arts Center in Russell.&nbsp; We also travel to Lucas to learn about grassroots art with Rosslyn Schultz at the Grassroots Art Center, and stop by the Garden of Eden.&nbsp;

Smoky Hills PBS visits Russell Co. on the next 'Traveling Kansas'

LAWRENCE — More than 7,500 undergraduate students at the University of Kansas earned honor roll distinction for the spring 2020 semester.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The students, from KU’s Lawrence and Edwards campuses and the schools of Health Professions and Nursing in Kansas City, Kansas, represent 85 of 105 Kansas counties; 47 other states, territories, and Washington, D.C.; and 55 other countries.

The honor roll comprises undergraduates who meet requirements in the College of Liberal Arts &amp; Sciences and in the schools of Business, Education, Engineering, Health Professions, Journalism, Music, Nursing, Pharmacy and Social Welfare. The School of Architecture &amp; Design did not post a dean’s list this term. Honor roll criteria vary among the university’s academic units. Some schools honor the top 10% of students enrolled, some establish a minimum grade-point average, and others raise the minimum GPA for each year students are in school. Students must complete a minimum number of credit hours to be considered for the honor roll.

Good Samaritan Society –Hays confirms all 61 residents who were part of a the mass testing event on Tuesday, July 7 tested negative for COVID-19.

All 64 staff were tested as well, and two of those tests returned positive. 

Both staff members remain out on leave and will return to work once cleared to do so.

A second round of mass testing is underway for employees and residents today.

"While we continue to pray for our staff members, we are happy to share that all staff and families are doing well at this time and we praise God for the negative results for all residents," a news release said.

"We continue to work side by side with our local and state health departments as we work through these challenging times. As always, the health, safety and well-being of our residents, staff and the community we serve is our top priority.”

Smoky Hill Education Service Center, with offices in Hays and Salina, celebrated
its 30-year anniversary on July 1 with the reveal of a new logo, designed to
better reflect SHESC’s name and mission.

Chris Moddelmog, SHESC executive
director, said that reaching the 30-year milestone presented a perfect
opportunity to reconsider and modernize SHESC’s brand, while still honoring and
connecting to the previous logo design.

“The compass rose-style star at the
center of our previous logo is a powerful symbol of how we provide direction to
educators, as well as helping to guide and inspire them,” Moddelmog said. “We
didn’t want to just discard that tradition, but we also wanted to enhance and
build upon that foundation.”

Moddelmog explained that the new logo
adds a stylized hill as its central symbol, providing a stronger connection to
the “Smoky Hill” in the service center’s name and suggesting the historical
connection between mountain peaks and striving for greater heights of learning.

Other symbolism in the new logo includes:

Smoky Hills (White
Line): Represents the regional geography of the Smoky Hills and the more than
50 school districts SHESC serves across 25 counties.

Smoky Hill River
(Blue Swoop): As the river helps sustain the land it runs through, SHESC
provides critical assistance for area education.

Pencil: Where the
blue and white lines intersect on the abstract hill, it suggests the point of a
sharpened pencil – a reminder of SHESC’s educational mission. 

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
Arrow: Where the
blue swoop touches two rays of the compass rose star, it forms an arrow
pointing upward and onward. Likewise, SHESC serves as a guide to continual

Adam Pracht, SHESC marketing coordinator,
said he was excited that SHESC was also able to support area students with the
new logo project. 

SHESC hired Etch - a student-run marketing and graphic design
firm connected with McPherson College - to create the new symbol. 

“The college students at Etch provided us
with a beautiful logo that is packed with meaning in just a few simple lines,”
Pracht said. “By going with Etch, we were able to support innovative education
in central Kansas!”

The new logo was rolled out immediately
across SHESC’s website, social media, and most online and printed marketing
materials. It will begin to appear across more branded materials through July
and August. During the next one to two years, people can expect to see the new
logo on locations such as signage, name tags, event displays, and the like. 

“Some items will take time to change, but
we will get there,” Pracht said. “We’re really looking forward to introducing
this modern new look across everywhere our name and brand appears!”

Smoky Hill Education Service Center unveils new logo design

WICHITA — More than 2,000 students completed degrees at Wichita State University in spring 2020.

Undergraduate students who have attained a grade point average of 3.9 out of a possible 4.0 received the summa cum laude award; those with an average of 3.55 received the magna cum laude award; and those with an average of 3.25 received the cum laude.

WSU enrolls about 16,000 students, and offers more than 50 undergraduate degree programs in more than 150 areas of study in six undergraduate colleges.

The Graduate School offers an extensive program including more than 40 master's degrees that offer study in more than 100 areas; a specialist in education degree; and doctoral degrees in applied mathematics; audiology; chemistry; communication sciences and disorders; human factors and community/clinical psychology; educational leadership; nursing practice; physical therapy; and aerospace, electrical, industrial and mechanical engineering.

Per the request of our Hays Recreation Commission Board of Directors beginning Monday, July 13 for all indoor activities that take place through Hays Recreation we will ask that all staff and spectator as well as some participants over the age of five wear a mask.

Participants who are participating in a vigorous program- i.e. sports camps, running activity, working out, etc.- will not be asked to wear masks while engaged in the program. 

 Those participating in a leisure program will be asked to wear a mask while participating.   

We want everyone to know ahead of time of this decision so that you can prepare your children and yourself before coming to the Hays Recreation Center and Fitness Center.&nbsp;

Indoor 4-H and open exhibits and judging will continue as planned

Fair officials are encouraged attendees to practice social distancing and&nbsp; wash or sanitize their hands often. Masks are advised, but not required.

The committee has unfortunately made the difficult decision to cancel Herzogfest 2020 in Victoria. 

We appreciate everyone being patient with us in the last week while we made our final decision. 

Our main goal now, is to keep our community healthy and see a bigger and better festival next year.

Due to the current situation in our area regarding COVID-19, the Hays Community Theatre has decided to cancel all performances of "Picasso at the Lapin Agile" which had been scheduled for the this weekend and next.

We apologize for this inconvenience, but we believe the health of our actors and of our audience members is of the highest importance. We hope to perform this comedy sometime in the future.

HCT cancels 'Picasso' performances due to COVID-19 

The Hays After 5 Christian Women’s group has announced it is canceling its meetings for the rest of the summer.&nbsp;&nbsp;The meetings were scheduled for Monday, July 13, and Monday, Aug. 10.

Betty Rupp, the group’s area director, said in an email that the cancellation was due to the recent increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in Ellis County and the increased number of deaths attributed to the virus in the state.
