The Ottawa Chautauqua was one of these significant venues that supported discussions of women's rights. This presentation will examine how women used the Chautauqua platform to engage in political activism, particularly suffrage and temperance, and how this early movement laid the groundwork for contemporary issues of feminism and gender equality. Virtual Lunch & Learn features woman suffrage at the Chautauqua

DSNWK is hosting the 2020 Esther McMurtrie Memorial Golf Tournament to be held on September 25 at the Ellis Golf Club (1301 Spruce Street, Ellis, Kansas). Registration will begin at 8 a.m. with tee-off beginning at 9 a.m.

The cost of playing in this four person scramble is $300 per team (four person teams). This includes green fees, golf carts, lunch on the course, and flight prizes. There will be additional opportunities to win raffles, prizes, and a golf cart.

You can also participate by making a financial/in-kind donation or by sponsoring a hole on the course. Hole Sponsorship is $300 and includes a sign with your (company) name on the tee box.

COLBY — ArtRageous, the first art show of the school year for the Colby Community College art department, is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 3, at the Prairie Museum of Art and History.

The show features a mix of two and three-dimensional works. CCC art instructor Rebel Mahieu said the event has a unique format.

"Artists will bring two or four pieces," she said. "Most of them will be at the show to describe how the pieces they hang contrast with their style."

Contributing artists include&nbsp;Kary Zweygardt, CCC alumnus and curator of the Quincy Art Gallery in St. Francis,&nbsp;along with his wife Kim; Joe Hartman, Mahieu, Mike McLaughlin, and Suzanne Schielke from Colby; retired CCC art instructor Cal Mahin and retired Fort Hays State University art instructor Kathleen Kuchar of Hays; current FHSU art instructors Toby Flores, Brian Hutchinson and Linda Ganstrom; Garden City Community College art instructor Michael Knutson; Tony Spivey of Goodland; and Great Bend's Von Pounds.

The Ellis County Landfill this week announced an upcoming tire disposal discount
event. Due to unavailability of grants for a tire amnesty, the Ellis County Commission
has approved a half-price reduction on the rate of tires from 10 cents/pound to 5
cents/pound. The sale will begin Monday, Sept. 21, and last through
Saturday, Oct. 3. All tires disposed of will be recycled.

The United Way is asking everyone to challenge co-workers, friends, and family by donating items that will benefit the partner agencies and the clients they serve.

You may bring your donations to the United Way office in the Hadley Center, 205 E. 7th, Suite 111, from August 24 through August 28, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. or during their Campaign Kickoff at the Hays Chamber’s monthly luncheon on Friday, August 28 at the Rose Garden Banquet Hall,  2350 E. 8th St.

Unfortunately, the decision was made by the Hays Masonic Lodge and Masonic Cancer Alliance to cancel the free cancer screening, which was to be Saturday, Aug. 22 at First United Methodist Church.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Due to the current situation, interest in the event did not warrant moving forward. Hays will be the site of a free screening clinic in the spring or summer of 2021. Anyone registered for this event, or interested in registering for the future event may email Brooke Groneman (<a href="mailto:bgroneman@kumc.edu" target="_blank">bgroneman@kumc.edu</a>), the director of Outreach for the Masonic&nbsp;Cancer&nbsp;Alliance, and request further information.&nbsp;

All are invited to stop by for free cancer screenings hosted by Hays Masonic Lodge No. 195, Masonic Cancer Alliance (MCA), and The University of Kansas Cancer Center from&nbsp; 9 a.m. to noon&nbsp; Saturday, Aug. 22 at the First United Methodist Church – north entrance, 305 W. Seventh St., Hays&nbsp;

Area Masons work with staff from the MCA and the Kansas Masonic Foundation to coordinate many of these free screening events.

KRC Future of Farming online town hall is August 27

The Ranchland Trust of Kansas (RTK) photography contest will be open through August 31. The contest is open to professional and amateur photographers of all ages. Photographs entered showcase the natural beauty of ranching and grazing lands across the state. The competition offers Kansans the chance to explore and capture the many activities, seasons and faces of Kansas’ ranching tradition.

Participants should submit photos expressing the mission of RTK: “To preserve Kansas’ ranching heritage and open spaces for future generations through the conservation of working landscapes.” This may include landscape, livestock and people, with preference to grasslands, grazing land, ranchers, cattle and much more. Participants may enter up to five photos. Entries will be judged by a panel of professionals in the field of photography and by RTK representatives.

All prizes for the contest are sponsored by Wolfe’s Camera of Topeka. Wolfe’s will award 10 photo cards to all 10 category winners. Categories include: Grand Prize, Landscape, Livestock, People, Youth (ages 5-17), Kansas Livestock Association member, Fan Favorite via Facebook voting and three honorable mentions. The grand prize winner will receive their choice of an 11”x 14” stretched photo canvas or a 12” x 18” metal print of their winning photo.

 </figure>RTKThe Ranchland Trust of Kansas (RTK) photography contest will be open through August 31. The contest is open to professional and amateur photographers of all ages. Photographs entered showcase the natural beauty of ranching and grazing lands across the state. The competition offers Kansans the chance to explore and capture the many activities, seasons and faces of Kansas’ ranching tradition.Participants should submit photos expressing the mission of RTK: “To preserve Kansas’ ranching heritage and open spaces for future generations through the conservation of working landscapes.” This may include landscape, livestock and people, with preference to grasslands, grazing land, ranchers, cattle and much more. Participants may enter up to five photos. Entries will be judged by a panel of professionals in the field of photography and by RTK representatives.All prizes for the contest are sponsored by Wolfe’s Camera of Topeka. Wolfe’s will award 10 photo cards to all 10 category winners. RTK photography contest to showcase Kansas ranching heritage

TOPEKA&nbsp;–&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly Monday encouraged Kansas businesses&nbsp;to participate in the application process for more than $130 million in grants to support businesses affected by the pandemic and enable companies to expand broadband access in the state.

&nbsp;The portal to apply&nbsp; opens at noon Wednesday, August 19 on the<a href="https://www.kansascommerce.gov/"> Kansas Department of Commerce (KDC) website.</a>

The application portal for the SPARK economic development and connectivity grant programs will appear <a href="https://www.kansascommerce.gov/">online here.</a>

“This is an opportunity to revitalize our economy and for businesses to receive some necessary relief,”&nbsp;said Kelly.&nbsp;“I strongly encourage business owners to apply first thing Wednesday if they are eligible.”

In addition to providing financial relief, grants will be available to businesses whose products and services will be needed in greater volume to help combat the virus and its effects. Funding is also being made available to expand broadband access both through infrastructure improvements and by partnerships with internet service providers to serve low-income households. These grants are funded through the Coronavirus Relief Fund of the federal CARES Act.&nbsp;

This pandemic has affected each sector differently, with industries having distinct needs. Therefore, applications for grants are being made available in the following categories:

Kansas businesses with fewer than 500 employees are eligible to apply for Small Business Working Capital grants. Funds can be used to pay working capital expenses such as payroll, rent, mortgage insurance, utilities, inventory, and more. Grants will be awarded on a rolling basis until funds are depleted.&nbsp;

The Securing Local Food Systems grant program was created to support Kansas meat processing facilities, food processors, grocers, and food banks to address food for human consumption supply chain disruptions as a result of the COVID-19 public health emergency.&nbsp;

The PPE Procurement grant program will award businesses funds for the purchase of personal protective equipment (PPE), implementation of workplace redesigns, additional signage, new technology solutions for distance working, and other items to comply with COVID-19 public health guidelines on safely returning employees to work.

PPE Manufacturing grants will provide funding to manufacturers to reimburse certain costs to manufacture critically needed PPE. The grant funding will assist entities with creating new businesses while contributing to the fight against the current COVID-19 public health emergency.

Kansas has a strong pipeline of bioscience-related companies developing SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic, therapeutic and medical countermeasures. This grant program will accelerate commercialization and go-to-market strategies, allowing these Kansas companies to quickly deploy novel technology by optimizing value and reducing risk through informed decision making.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Connectivity Emergency Response Grant (CERG) was created to address the increased need for connectivity in Kansas in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Proposed projects should improve connectivity to unserved and underserved areas of Kansas to address the needs of telework, telehealth, distance learning, and other remote business services.

The Broadband Partnership Adoption Grant will provide support for low-income households by partnering with ISPs to leverage their existing adoption infrastructure and assure connectivity to as many Kansans as possible.&nbsp;

This Domestic Supply Chain Fortification grant will help offset the business disruptions to Kansas companies’ supply chains caused by COVID-19 and assist with relocating jobs to Kansas from outside of the US. Where appropriate, this grant program would be offered in addition to existing incentive programs (PEAK, KIT, HPIP, etc.) to improve the state’s competitiveness.

To mitigate the job losses in Kansas as a result of COVID-19, the Kansas Department of Commerce is seeking a rapid response training program that will provide training, certificate testing, and job placement assistance in the areas of IT, cybersecurity, and IT project management.&nbsp;

This program will support the needs of the advanced manufacturing industry in Kansas. The program will focus on reskilling/upskilling individuals affected by COVID-19 to meet economic sector needs in high-demand, high-wage occupations.

Divine Mercy Radio will hold two appreciation banquets this year with limited people due to the coronavirus. The appreciation banquet is held each year to thank those who support this non-commercial radio station.

The banquet in Hays will be held Sept. 12, in the Little Theatre of Holy Family Elementary, 1800 Milner. Since Divine Mercy Radio began broadcasting in the Lindsborg/Salina areas in June, a second banquet will be held Sept. 13 in the Hall of Bishops at Sacred Heart Cathedral, 118 N. Ninth, Salina. Both banquets will begin at 6 p.m. with a social hour.

Dr. Ray Guarendi, a clinical psychologist with a popular radio and television show on the Eternal Word Television Network, will be the featured speaker. The title of his talk is “Laughter: The Sanity of Families.” Dr. Ray is known for his comical, yet serious approach to parenting with common sense. He will have the audience laughing and coming away more confident about their own parenting and grandparenting skills.

A third station began broadcasting in Lindsborg/Salina on 101.7, KJDM in June of 2020.&nbsp; Currently, Divine Mercy Radio is building a 25,000-watt station in Hays that will be known as 105.7, KMDG. This should be completed by October. At that time, the 2,500-watt KVDM station in Hays will begin broadcasting radio classics.

OSBORNE — The Kansas Department of Transportation plans to begin roadwork on a portion of U.S. 281 (South 1st Street) in the city of Osborne starting this week.

Crews will be replacing the concrete pavement, curb and gutter between Connecticut and Massachusetts streets. Traffic will be restricted to one lane through the work zone and controlled by a traffic signal. Minor delays not exceeding 5 minutes should be expected.

KDOT anticipates work to be completed by mid-November, weather permitting. The $539,000 project is being funded through KDOT’s City Connecting Link Improvement Program, which funds improvements to state highways that extend through cities.

Bryant &amp; Bryant Construction of Halstead will serve as the primary contractor.&nbsp;

Two Hays educators, Monica Dreiling and Rachel Wentling, have received classroom grants from the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Dreiling, a fifth grade science, reading and writing teacher at Lincoln Elementary School, will use her $500 grant money to create a “In Good Hands: Engineering Space Gloves” unit. The unit will allow students to take a virtual tour and learn about space hazards and help engineer part of a space suit for a fictional NASA mission. About 50 students will take part in the unit.

Wentling, principal at Holy Family Elementary School, will use her $500 grant to create a mobile STEM cart filled with reusable materials. The cart will make resources and materials available to instructors across grade levels. The $500 grant will allow Wentling to purchase one cart with materials costing an additional $1,000-$2,000, which the school will purchase, Wentling wrote in her application.

The Junior Membership Classroom Grants are supported by the NSDAR Helen Pouch Memorial Fund. Two classroom grants are available for each state and the District of Columbia.

State junior membership chairs and a panel of judges review applications for their state and determine two winners and a runner-up. Proposed projects must benefit students in the classroom directly.

Recipients typically receive their grant awards in late August.&nbsp;

Beginning at 8 a.m. Monday, 20th Street at the intersection of Lincoln Drive will be closed. 

 Lincoln will also be closed between 19th and 20th streets for reconstruction.  Construction is expected to last two weeks.

DSNWK’s annual awards ceremony will look a little different this year, with the event going to a virtual format as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. 

“Although the ceremony will be virtual, we still believe that it will be a special afternoon as we will recognize both staff and persons served by DSNWK,” said Steve Keil, Director of Development.&nbsp; 

Although details about the ceremony are still being worked out, DSNWK plans to recognize employees for years of service, as well as achievements made by men and women in DSNWK services.&nbsp; The ceremony is set for Tuesday, Oct. 20.

The La Crosse Battle of the Badges blood drive will be noon to 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14 at the La Crosse City Auditorium. Appointments are preferred and can be made by calling 1-800-RedCross.

Beginning Tuesday, traffic on the west Vine Street frontage road will be switched into the west lane of the frontage road 
in front of Arby’s. &nbsp;Frontage road traffic will remain one-way 
northbound.
