Learn how reindeer fly at FHSU STEM-ED annual Christmas show

The 70th annual Christmas lighting ceremony in WaKeeney will take place on Saturday, November 28.

  Activities begin at 9:00 a.m. and continue throughout the day with the lighting ceremony beginning at 6:00 p.m. 

 Santa will arrive and light the 35 ft. tree and then proceed down the street to his new house in the North Pole. 

 Throughout the day there will be many free activities, such as a Christmas Bazaar, “Timeless Holiday Tradition” display at the local museum, “A Christmas Carol” puppet show, Nex-Tech Express train rides, horse-drawn wagon rides, live reindeer to view, and a soup supper.

Plans are to continue with the lighting ceremony with safety precautions.  Many of the activities are outside.  We are asking that everyone follow social distancing guidelines and wear masks, if required.

The tree and decorations will remain through January 1, 2021, so visitors can view our traditional Christmas scene any evening until then.  The holiday tradition display will also remain at the Trego County Historical Museum until 2021.

Government surplus food distribution Friday in Hays

The Kansas Department of Transportation plans to begin a field survey the week of Nov. 23 for proposed shoulder widening and bridge replacement projects on K-23 in Sheridan County.

Survey crews will be working along a 6-mile corridor from County Road 70 north to Walnut Avenue in Hoxie. Activities will include the use of survey instruments on the ground to determine locations of existing features within the survey corridor. KDOT expects the survey work to be completed by March 2021.&nbsp;

Crews will contact property owners or tenants for permission to enter private property, if access is needed. Michael Selley, field survey project manager, will oversee the survey for KDOT.

Due to the increase in COVID cases in the community, the Hays Public Library will be temporarily suspending some one-on-one services. 

This means after-school tutoring will be canceled through December. The tutors will be looking into online options for next semester.

Oakley has published the following notice on its <a href="https://www.facebook.com/discoveroakley/">Facebook page</a> regarding the closure of city offices and the local museum.

OAKLEY — Effective Monday, Nov. 23, the Oakley City Office and Fick Fossil and History Museum will be closed to the public until further notice.

City parks are NOT being closed at this time.

The Oakley Landfill will be open to city utility customers only. All landfill charges will be charged to the customer’s respective city utility account. All forms of in person payment will not be permitted.

All water, sewer and refuse collection services will remain operational and running during this closure.

City employees are still working regular business hours and are available by phone at 785-671-3611 to answer questions and conduct business.

Currently, Oakley City Council meetings will proceed as planned, but all non-essential city board meetings likely will be canceled or rescheduled.

TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has rescinded a boil water advisory for the city of Bird City, located in Cheyenne County. The advisory was issued because of&nbsp;a loss of pressure in the system due to a line break.&nbsp;Failure to maintain adequate pressure can lead to a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Laboratory testing samples collected from the City of Bird City indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved. &nbsp;

their physicians.
The advisory took effect on November 18 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the
system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE issued the advisory because of a waterline
break resulting in a loss of pressure. Failure to maintain adequate pressure can lead to a loss of chlorine
residuals and bacterial contamination.
Regardless of whether the public water supplier or KDHE announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE
can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Kansas State Research and Extension agents and specialists will hold a cover crops webinar Tuesday, December 1, 2020 from 11:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m.

&nbsp;Extension specialists DeAnn Presley, Peter Tomlinson and Jaymelynn Farney will discuss topics covering the benefits of cover crops in both livestock and crop production systems. &nbsp;

Topics include how to deal with establishment challenges, cover crop utilization in livestock grazing systems, and recommended seed selection for central Kansas. 

This meeting is open to anyone interested in cover crop production regardless of where they live. &nbsp;
