Firefighters test hydrants in NW Hays on Wednesday

TOPEKA - <a href="https://www.washburn.edu/wifi/">Washburn University’s WIFI Film Festival</a> is returning this April after the pandemic forced its cancellation last year. The 2021 WIFI Film Festival will be held virtually from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. April 22-24.

The WIFI Film Festival was created by Washburn University Mass Media Department in 2018. After a successful first year, with 1,978 submissions from over a hundred countries, last year's cancellation prompted the students and faculty to create an all-virtual event to ensure that the WIFI Film Festival will never be canceled again.

Although the festival will primarily be held virtually, there will be an in-person screening of Disney Pixar’s film “Soul” in Yager Stadium on April 24 from 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. “Soul” follows a middle-school band teacher who has a deep passion for jazz. After traveling to another realm, he finds himself helping others discover their passions, and he discovers the true meaning of soul.

This year, the festival will have a special focus on films both by and about women.&nbsp; Special guests include:

The awards for films entered into the competition will be announced during the Best of WIFI ceremony on April 24, from 5:30 – 6 p.m. 

The submissions are judged on several different filmmaking aspects including cinematography, originality and sound design. Top awards include the President’s Award, selected by Washburn University’s President, Jerry Farley, the Allan Holzman Award for Special Achievement in Editing, selected by Allan Holzman and the Ivy Pruss Screenwriting Award, selected by Ivy Pruss. Prizes include $100 for the best overall film and a Washburn scholarship, presented to the Best Film by a Kansas middle school student.

Vicory has been a film director, writer, producer and executive producer for the past fifteen years. She has won three Telly Awards and has spoken on panels around the world including both Sundance Film Festival and Cannes Film Festival.

Before writing and directing, Misti worked as a production designer; most notably collaborating with Academy Award winner Kevin Willmot (BlacKkKlansman). Her first short films as a writer/director toured the festival circuit, winning multiple Best of Fest awards. She co-created and directed the award-winning western drama, “Red Bird,” which has been nominated for four Daytime Emmys. AMC Networks named her as one of the top five female episodic creators of 2020. Boland is a four-time Daytime Emmy nominee.

New&nbsp; Media Director for the Lawrence Arts Center,&nbsp;Angel is the co-founder of Women of Lawrence Film and is new media director of the Lawrence Arts Center. Her short films have been screened in festivals across the country, including the Los Angeles International Film Festival.

Gervagizian&nbsp;founded Sixx Tape productions in 2014 and had her directorial debut with “Call Girl.” She released “The Stylist” in 2016, which has screened at genre festivals across the globe and won 20 awards.

Emmy award-winning editor and director, Myers works with a variety of clients such as production house, filmmakers, non-profit organizations as well as corporations such as Sprint, GE, Pfizer, Southwest Airlines and Hallmark.

Zimmerman  is the former president of Kansas City Women in Film and TV and has built a career as a visibility strategist, film and podcast producer

WIFI Film Festival returns virtually to Washburn University

ABILENE - The next monthly Eisenhower Presidential Library Lunch &amp; Learn program will be Thursday at noon central time.

Dr. Shelly Cline with the <a href="https://mchekc.org/">Midwest Center for Holocaust Education</a> returns as we continue focusing on holocaust education and remembrance this month. Holocaust history raises important questions about what Europeans could have done to stop the rise of Nazism in Germany and its assault on Europe’s Jews.

Questions must also be asked about the responsibility of the international community, including the United States. What did the American people know about the treatment and fate of Europe’s Jews? What responses were possible? This talk will also discuss the priorities for Americans during the 1930s and 1940s and the U.S. role in the liberation of Europe.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dr. Cline is the historian and director of education at the Midwest Center for Holocaust Education in Overland Park. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. 

Her research focuses on the SS Aufseherinnen in the concentration camp system and the gendered perpetration of the Holocaust. Her research has been supported by grants from the University of Kansas (KU) and Universität Hamburg. Cline has been an instructor in the KU Humanities Program and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Department. She also served on the faculties of the Kansas City Art Institute and University of Missouri Kansas City.

April Lunch & Learn: Americans and the Holocaust

COLBY — The Colby Community College livestock judging team is hosting the first annual CCC Classic Spring Livestock Show on May 15 at the Thomas County Fairgrounds in Colby.&nbsp;

The show starts at 9 a.m. with swine, followed by cattle and then sheep and goats. The judge is Bobby Strecker of Holyoke, Colo. Prizes include a $500 scholarship to CCC for the champion senior showman in each species and a $250 scholarship to CCC for the reserve champion senior showman in each species. The champion and reserve champion showmen in the intermediate and junior divisions will get a cash payback. The grand champion overall in each species (market and breeding) will be awarded a belt buckle and banner. The reserve champion overall in each species (market and banner) will be awarded a cooler and banner.&nbsp;

"The show is a great way for youth livestock exhibitors to participate in a show and gain experience for themselves and their livestock," said CCC Livestock Judging Coach Marty Fear. "The show also gives the CCC judging students some visibility in the community and a way to give back to the show industry they are involved in."

Entries can be submitted&nbsp;<a href="http://www.showringmaster.com/Upcoming-Shows/Colby-Community-College-Livestock-Show">online</a>. Registrations before May 13 receive a discounted rate. The Hays Fire Department will be inspecting and flow testing fire hydrants on Tuesday in the area along Commerce Parkway from 13th Street to Reservation Road,&nbsp; including the Hays Regional Airport. 

This is part of a coordinated effort by the city of Hays to inspect all fire hydrants in the city and flush all water mains annually.

Details of a rezoning request from agriculture to heavy industrial district for a portion of 5809 230th Ave. will be heard by the Hays Area Planning Commission tonight.

The 32-acre tract of land is owned by Hess Land and is located just outside the city's future land use map area.

According to information from Hays P.I.E. Superintendent Curtis Deines, landowner Dan Hess plans to develop the area for heavy industrial uses. The property is undeveloped and has been used for agriculture production.&nbsp;

The area north of Interstate 70 along 230th Avenue includes several adjacent heavy industries including Midwest Energy Goodman Energy Center, Ellis County Concrete batch plant, and Hess Services.&nbsp;

The planning commission will consider setting a May 17 public hearing for the rezoning request.

The Hays Fire Department will be inspecting and flow testing fire hydrants on Monday in the area from Hall St. to Fort St. between 7th St. and 27th St., and also Vine St. to Canterbury Dr. between 27th St. and 22nd St. 

The associated flushing of water mains allows chlorine to be distributed throughout the system to eliminate bio-filming in the water mains. Slight discoloration of the water supply may be encountered although there will be no health risks to the consumer.

Firefighters are also checking the pressure and volume of water mains in each neighborhood for firefighting purposes. Fire hydrant inspections and flow testing continue Monday

Six rural Kansas locations were selected to host the traveling Smithsonian exhibition&nbsp;Crossroads: Change in Rural America.&nbsp;Other locations, including the Hays Public Library, were then selected by Humanities Kansas as partner sites&nbsp;responsible for creating their own displays and programming related to the&nbsp;Crossroads&nbsp;theme. The library’s exhibit will be on display May 1 through June 13, accompanied by a variety of programs.

In 1900, about 40% of Americans lived in rural areas, by 2010, less than 18% of the U.S. population lived in rural areas. In just over a century, massive economic and social changes moved millions of Americans into urban areas. Yet only 10% of the U.S. landmass is considered urban. Why should revitalizing the rural places left behind matter to those who remain, those who left, and those who will come in the future? Because there is much more to the story of rural America.

After careful consideration and visiting with various community members, the Hays Public Library reached the decision that the most pressing “crossroad” facing the area is water conservation. HPL is partnering with the Hays Water Department to present&nbsp;Crisis to Conservation to Conversation: A Hays Water Story, the display will explore three different time periods, the past, present, and future of Hays water issues.

Hays is unique in that it is the largest Kansas community without a reliable water supply. Community leaders and their citizens have stepped up to be water conservation leaders while planning for the stark realities of water security. This display and its corresponding programming will spark a conversation about Hays’ relationship with water and the community’s future. In addition to water-related content, this also will be an opportunity for the Hays community to have a larger conversation about rural America.&nbsp;

Hays library presents display chronicling 'Hays Water Story'

One of only three Native American members of the Kansas Legislature will visit Hays on April 23. Rep. Christina Haswood, D-Lawrence, will participate in a conversation at an outdoor barbecue with the Ellis County Democratic Party and the public from 4:45 to 6 p.m. Friday at the Downtown Hays Pavilion.

Later, at 7 p.m., she will appear on the Smoky Hills Public Television program “Kansas Legislature.”

At 26, the freshman representative is one of the youngest members of the Legislature.

“I have heard about the divide between rural and urban Kansas, and western and eastern Kansas, and I want to help bridge that divide,” she said. “Some issues are more of a concern to western Kansas, and as someone from eastern Kansas I want to help start the conversations about those issues.”

Elected in 2020, she won a three-way Democratic primary and then ran unopposed in the general election for Kansas House District 10. Her district&nbsp;encompasses southeast Douglas County, including southeastern Lawrence, all Baldwin City and portions of Eudora, Palmyra and Wakarusa townships.&nbsp;She is a member of the Health and Human Services, Agriculture, and Water committees and also serves on the Joint Committee on State-Tribal Relations.

She said that in her visit to Hays and her appearance on “Kansas Legislature,” she wants to talk about her work on water, health and human services, and agriculture.

She also wants to talk about the issues common to all Kansans – rural, urban, Democratic and Republican. For instance, “keeping Kansans in Kansas, keeping young people in Kansas, keeping talent in Kansas.”

“This is what makes me excited about getting out-of-district and having these conversations,” she said.

At her swearing-in on Jan. 12, Haswood honored her Navajo ancestry by wearing traditional Diné fashion that she created with her mother and her partner. Vogue magazine&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vogue.com/article/christina-haswood-kansas-representative-indigenous-regalia">featured her</a>&nbsp;and her fashion choice in an article the next day.

Though her ancestry is Arizona Navajo, she was born in Lawrence and has lived her entire life in the district she now represents. After graduating from Lawrence High School, she attended Haskell Indian Nations University, which is also in Lawrence, graduating with an associate degree in community health. She earned a bachelor's degree in public health from Arizona State University and a Master of Public Health from the University of Kansas School of Medicine.&nbsp;

Asked how a Navajo from the West came to live in Lawrence, Kansas, she laughed. “Blame my parents for that.”

Her father and mother were born and raised on the Arizona portion of Navajo Nation, which spans a large area in northeastern Arizona, northwestern New Mexico and southeastern Utah. Her parents met at Haskell University, where her father played basketball.&nbsp;

“When they had me, they had a decision to make, whether to go back or stay in Lawrence. They grew up on the reservation, and they thought there were better opportunities for me in Lawrence.”

Haswood works for the University of Kansas as an agent for the Douglas County Covid Call Center.

Bills she has sponsored include creating a Kansas youth advisory council; increasing the minimum wage to $15 per hour over six years; abolishing the death penalty and creating the crime of aggravated murder; changing the designation of Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day; and providing for the attorney general to coordinate training for law enforcement agencies on missing and murdered indigenous people.&nbsp;

The barbecue will feature pulled pork sandwiches (wrapped individually), packaged chips and barbecue sauce, and bottled water.

Ellis Co. Democrats to host Lawrence rep for outdoor conversation, barbecue

A Neil Diamond Tribute is a broadway style production featuring 12-time Branson Show award winner Keith Allynn as he unveils the story of Diamond’s life through Diamond’s own songs. Quick change magic, a unique salute toe veterans and Diamond’s top hits round out this romantic comedy, making it a must see for audiences of all ages.

The St. Francis Community High School auditorium, 100 S. College, St. Francis, is venue for this Western Plains Arts Association show Sunday, April 25 at 3 p.m. CDT. Admission by WPAA season ticket or at the gate $10 adults, $5 students.

This project is generously funded by Mid-America Arts Alliance, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the state arts agencies of Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas.

Hays Toy Show Saturday at Rose Garden

WICHITA — The Kansas Rural Center will host a virtual Local Food Connections conference on May 7 from 8:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The conference will include panelists and speakers from across the region who are actively involved in strengthening local food systems and Farm to School programs. 

Farmers, food producers, school nutrition personnel, grassroots organizers and community stakeholders in food systems are encouraged to attend this event. This virtual conference will help promote new relationships in our foodshed and increase awareness on access to healthful local foods. This conference is partially supported by a USDA Farm to School grant.

This year’s conference series theme, “Feeding Neighbors, Forging Community, Growing Together,” highlights the ways in which a robust local and regional farm and food system positively impacts and strengthens bonds within communities at all levels – from soil microbes to human beings. The Local Food Connections conference in May is the second in the conference series and focuses on how socially just local food and farm systems increase the health of Kansas communities and the environment.

Keynote presenters include land-based educator Brett Ramey of the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska, and Professor Emeritus of Agricultural Economics at the University of Missouri, John Ikerd. Ramey’s work sits at the intersections of ecological, cultural, and community health and includes designing courses on indigenous foodways and climate change at a tribal university, conducting community-based health research, facilitating healing retreats for cancer survivors, and advising on numerous national and tribal climate justice and conservation initiatives.

Ikerd orients his work toward agricultural and economic sustainability as a means of supporting small family farms and rural communities, has authored numerous books, and is recognized as a longtime leading voice in the sustainable agriculture movement.

Four breakout sessions will host panelists from across the state who will discuss Farm to School partnerships, community food hubs, and the status of local grocery stores in rural communities.

Over the lunch hour, Chef Rick Martin, hospitality consultant for the Lawrence Restaurant Association and co-founder of Kitchen Scratch will give a cooking demonstration. Local food connections conference to be hosted by Kansas Rural Center

There are four Cottonwood Extension District Positions that will be on the November ballot. While the election is still over 6 months away, the deadline to file for a position is just around the corner.&nbsp; When the Cottonwood District formed in 2017 our eight-member board was appointed by the County Commissioners in both Barton and Ellis County. So that all positions would not come open at the same time, four members served two-year terms while the other four board members were appointed to serve four-year terms. From now on, all terms are four years in length.

Each of our eight board members have a commitment to create a budget that is reasonable for you, the taxpayer, while still supporting the delivery of valuable Extension education materials for lifelong learners in our district. Extension board member qualifications include:

The&nbsp;generosity&nbsp;of these heroes&nbsp;has been especially impactful over the past year as&nbsp;they helped the Red Cross continue to meet patient needs amid the COVID-19 pandemic.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The Red Cross continues to urge&nbsp;healthy individuals, especially those with type O blood,&nbsp;to&nbsp;give blood to ensure&nbsp;hospitals can meet patient needs.

Area blood drives scheduled for April 16-30

The 55th annual Fort Hays State University NIRA Rodeo kicks off on Friday and continues through Sunday at Doug Philip Arena on Golf Course Road off the Highway 183 Bypass in Hays.

Since 1964, the FHSU Rodeo Club and team have provided students with valuable opportunities to hone their skills in an arena environment. This is an exciting intercollegiate rodeo that attracts around 600 entrants from 26 colleges and universities.

Advanced tickets are available now at Vanderbilts, Orscheln Farm &amp; Home, and in the FHSU Memorial Union.

55th annual FHSU NIRA Rodeo this weekend in Hays

For decades, Sister Cities International has leveraged the power that art has to transform societies and transcend cultural boundaries through their Young Artists and Authors Showcase, giving youth the opportunity to express their vision for a more unified, peaceful world through original art and literature.

“United in Hope” is the theme for this year’s Young Artists and Authors Showcase.

The COVID-19 pandemic is a unique phenomenon in that it has affected every country around the globe. However, as is common in tragedy, hope shines through for those who persevere. Hope is a uniting force during this time as people struggle to cope with its ongoing effects and once again start to imagine a life without social distancing or wearing a mask.

The showcase features six categories: art, photography, creative writing, poetry, music (original), and music (interpretation).

The local contest is sponsored by Hays Sister Cities who is proud to partner with the Hays Arts Council on this project.

“I can’t think of a better program to bring these two community organizations together to highlight the creative work of the youth in this area. Encouraging local artists to inspire unity and explore cultural uniqueness is at the heart of both organizations,” said Brittney Squire, board member for Hays Sister Cities and the Hays Arts Council.

The first place winner in each category will receive a $100 cash prize. The top five winners in each category will be submitted to the Sister Cities International competition on behalf of Hays Sister Cities. The international showcase awards an overall first, second, and third place winner who is awarded $1,000; $250; and $100, respectively.

Area students between 13 and 18 years of age at the time of the 2021 deadline are eligible to enter the contest.
