Hays Happenings for June 

Phase 3 of the second season of the North Vine Street Corridor 
Project begins this week, weather permitting. 

During this phase, 
traffic on Vine Street in the area from 35th Street to 43rd Street will 
be shifted to the west side of Vine Street on the new pavement so that 
work can begin on the east side. Like previous phases of construction, 
left turns are not allowed in areas of construction where traffic is 
reduced to a single lane. Only right turns will be allowed to and from 
the I-70 ramps and various intersections. The currently posted detours 
will direct traffic through the construction zones. &nbsp;

Southbound 
Vine to eastbound I-70; as well as, eastbound I-70 to northbound Vine is
 being detoured to use the 32nd Street roundabout. &nbsp; &nbsp; Northbound Vine 
Street to westbound I-70; as well as, westbound I-70 to southbound Vine 
is detoured to use 41st Street, General Hays Road and 43rd Street. 
&nbsp;This phase of construction is expected to last several months through 
the summer.

The city of Larned is hoping generous supporters will help it bring back a beloved tradition that has brought joy to many residents over the years.

The City of Larned's water tower holds a special place in the hearts of its residents for its brilliant light display during the Christmas season. City officials recently launched a capital campaign on GoFundMe to aid in the restoration of this beloved tradition and raise enough to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/City-of-Larned-139334013384544/photos/pcb.788942248423714/788935435091062/" target="_blank">restore the lighting display and complete a full LED upgrade</a>.

"Many had the pleasure of growing up with this Larned tradition and we hope to give that same opportunity to current and future generations," a news release said.

Close to $23,000 has been raised in online and offline donations through the GoFundMe page so far.

If you are planning on entering poultry in this year's Ellis County Fair,&nbsp;Pullorum-Typhoid testing is required for all birds older than 4 months of age.&nbsp; Any bird younger than 4 months, any waterfowl and any meat pen project birds do not need to be tested.

Fair volunteers have scheduled 5:30 p.m.&nbsp; June 29 to complete this testing. It will be held at the Extension Office at 601 Main St., Hays, in the back meeting room.

This year, the Ellis Railroad Museum will be offering $1 train rides starting at 9 a.m., weather permitting. The Ellis Chamber of Commerce will cover the costs of the first 50 passengers.

Registration deadline approaching for the Ellis City-Wide Garage Sales

The next art show opens at the Deines Cultural Center and Art Galleyr on Sunday.

"Tribute: The Trudy Furney and Derrill Castor Dedication Show" features art from former students of these two beloved and influential Russell high school art teachers. There will be a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. The exhibition will remain on display until July 30.

New show 'Tribute' opens at Deines gallery on Sunday

 Due to the observance of the Memorial Day on May 31, the refuse/recycling route collection schedules in Hays will be altered as follows: Monday, May 31, 2021 and Tuesday, June 1, 2021 will be picked up on Tuesday, June 1, 2021. 

There is no anticipated change to Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday’s collection schedules. 

Although collections may not occur on your normal day, collections will be completed during the week. 

It is anticipated that heavy volumes of refuse/recycling will be encountered around the holidays. Please make sure your refuse and recycling are out by 7:00 a.m., and keep in mind that the trucks have no set time schedule. 

City of Hays customers that may have any questions regarding this notice should contact the Solid Waste Division of the Public Works Department at 785-628-7350.

Online sale date is June 1 for Kansas Biggest Rodeo

PHILLIPSBURG — Online tickets go on sale Tuesday, June 1 at 8 a.m. for the 92nd&nbsp;annual Kansas Biggest Rodeo in Phillipsburg. The website to purchase tickets is&nbsp;<a href="http://kansasbiggestrodeo.com/">KansasBiggestRodeo.com</a>.

This is the second year for tickets to be offered online, and it’s gone well, said committee chairman JD Shelton.

“We had a good response to the online sales last year,” he said. “It’s convenient for people and makes it easy for out-of-town people to buy tickets.”

The rodeo takes place August 5-7 at the rodeo grounds north of Phillipsburg.

Specialty act for this year is Tricked Out Trick Riders, featuring the Navarre girls. Dusta Kimzey O’Connell is the main trick rider for the Tricked Out company; the Navarre girls are Shyla and Layna, the daughters of Corey and Melissa (Riddle) Navarre.

Barrelman for this year’s rodeo is Justin Rumford. This will be Rumford’s third time as a rodeo clown in Phillipsburg; he is a seven-time PRCA Clown of the Year Award winner.

Randy Corley will call the play-by-play action as rodeo announcer, and Beutler and Son Rodeo Co. will provide the bucking horses and bulls.

Tickets will go on sale in person on July 1 at Heritage Insurance (785 Third Street, Phillipsburg). They can be purchased in person and over the phone with a credit card (785.543.2448).&nbsp;

A convenience fee of $1.25 and a credit card charge is applied to all tickets purchased by credit and debit card, whether they are purchased online and in person or over the phone at Heritage Insurance Group in Phillipsburg.&nbsp;

This year’s rodeo will be held August 5-7 in Phillipsburg and begins at 8 pm each night. Ticket prices for reserved seating are $19 for adults and $15 for children. General admission tickets for Thursday, August 5 are $16 for adults and $12 for children. General admission tickets for Fri., August 6 and Sat., August 7 are $17 for adults and $13 for children. Children ages 3-12 can receive the discount children price.&nbsp;

Thursday, August 5 is Family Night at the rodeo, with all kids ages 10 and under receiving a free ticket with the purchase of an adult ticket.

The Hays school board approved its student fees for the 2021-22 school year at its meeting last week.

All of the fees will remain the same with the exception for the school lunch program.

The Ellis County Joint Planning commission will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Ellis County Administrative Center, 718 Main, in the commission chambers.

The celebration will be held on June 12, the Feast Day of Immaculate Heart of Mary in celebration of the 10 + 1 anniversary of the new church building.

 The event will be held in the church parking lot, with seating in the Activity Center for the meal. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be served from 6 to 8 p.m.&nbsp; There will be outdoor games and activities for children and adults from 6 to 9 p.m.&nbsp; These include corn hole, spike ball, cake walk, face painting and more.

Fr. Nick and Fr. Ryan will be sharing their music and artistic talents in the church at 7:30 p.m. An outdoor movie,&nbsp;The Lion King,&nbsp;will begin after 9 p.m. to conclude the evening.&nbsp;Bring your lawn chairs or blankets.

A trio of road construction projects in Rawlins and Decatur counties is expected to begin over the next few weeks.

All three are Kansas Department of Transportation projects.

The
 first project will start the week of May 24 on K-117 in Rawlins County.
 Work will consist of a 1-inch mill and 2-inch overlay on approximately 
12 miles, starting at the U.S. 36 junction and ending at the Nebraska 
state line. 

<a>Upon completion on K-117, crews will begin resurfacing U.S. 83 followed by U.S. 36 in Decatur County. </a>The
 U.S. 83 portion will cover 8 miles from near County Road 9S north to 
the U.S 36 junction. The U.S. 36 portion will span approximately 11 
miles, starting at the Rawlins County line and ending near the U.S 83 
junction.

Traffic
 through these projects will be directed through the work zones by 
flaggers and a pilot car during daylight hours. Minor delays, not 
exceeding 15 minutes, can be expected.

KDOT expects work on the K-117 project to end in mid-June and the U.S 83/36 projects by the end of July, weather permitting.

Venture
 Corp. is the primary contractor for the projects with combined contract
 costs totaling approximately $4.4 million.&nbsp;

Options Domestic and Sexual Violence Services, serving northwest Kansas, is hosting two ceremonies to honor survivors of abuse.

“Options has chosen the symbols of the iris and the garden to bring hope and healing to survivors of domestic and sexual violence,”&nbsp;Jennifer Hecker, Options executive director, said.

The events are a sharing of a caring thought, a story of solidarity or a prayer of hope and healing written on the back of a paper iris. There is no cost to the event. It is meant as a way for the community to connect with those who are on a journey to heal.

The irises may be picked up at 2716 Plaza Ave., Hays, or may be submitted on the web page at <a href="http://help4abuse.org">help4abuse.org</a>.

The share, care, prayer cards will be displayed as a paper garden at each event.

There will be a short ceremony and then an opportunity to walk among the paper garden to read the thoughts shared for the benefit of survivors.

The Hays event will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday at 215 W. 13th&nbsp;St., which is the vacant lot to the east of St. Joseph church.

The Colby event will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at 1480 W.&nbsp; Fourth&nbsp;St. on the lawn of the Colby Options office.

“A gardener will plant where there are no signs of life. And yet, the gardener knows that in the spring, there will be life, color and joy bursting from their plantings.” Hecker said.

“Survivors of domestic and sexual violence are the gardeners of their own lives. They use the tools available to them and tend their personal gardens in the darkest times, hoping for a bright harvest of healing. That is why Options has chosen the symbols of the iris and the garden to bring hope to survivors.”

This garden is located at the Kansas State Agricultural Research Center – Hays, formerly called the Experiment Station. It is located just south of Hays Frontier Park, south of the US Highway 183 Alternate (bypass). If you head south on Main, continue south across the Alternate, then take the first drive on your left (east off of 240 th Ave).

The drive curves. When the road takes a right turn, you are at a place to park to view not just the Trial Garden but the Backyard Demonstration Garden as well.

This vegetable garden serves as a trial garden for vegetable varieties being tested by K-State horticulture specialists to help update the list of KSRE recommended vegetable varieties. The Hays garden has typically tested tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers. Other plants such as zucchini and yellow squash are also sometimes grown.

The vegetables are planted, maintained and harvested by the Ellis County Master Gardeners. The actual number of new varieties tested varies year by year. Trial cultivars are planted side by side and include cultivars of the same species that are accepted standards currently in the trade.

Evaluations of each plant are done throughout the growing season. Quantitative and qualitative data is carefully collected for each variety, recorded and then reported to K-State at the end of the season. After harvesting and documenting the performance information, the fruit can be used by the Master Gardener who is doing the data collection. When quantities allow, produce is often shared with all Master Gardeners and/or provided to local food banks.

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Laboratory testing samples collected from the city of Natoma indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved. &nbsp;
