Lining of the sanitary sewer lines notated in red, began June 3.

 Midlands Contracting estimates the work will be completed in four weeks, weather permitting.

Ellis County Drug Court graduation set for next week

GREAT BEND - The Great Bend Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the city of Great Bend, will welcome drag racers to town this weekend for Rocky Mountain Race Week. The public is invited to a special welcome event at Jack Kilby Square starting at 4 p.m. Friday.

This family-friendly event will bring together the community with the racers as they kick off their annual race week in Great Bend with races starting Saturday. Drag racers will have vehicles staged around Jack Kilby Square in downtown Great Bend for the public to view.

Chamber President Megan Barfield hopes the community gets involved this race week. 

“We really encourage the community to come and help make Great Bend a memorable and welcoming stop for our out-of-town guests," Barfield said.&nbsp;"They’re driving hundreds of miles along their seven-day race period. Having them start and stop in Great Bend is a huge win for the SRCA Dragstrip.”

The Great Bend Chamber of Commerce and Ambassador Club will also be in the square from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. serving popcorn and passing out special race week promo books, while supplies last. Visit with the drivers, check out their cars, welcome the drivers, and then do some downtown shopping while redeeming the special race week-only promos.

The SRCA dragstrip has strong appeal to racers across the country and having this series in Great Bend bodes well for local businesses and hotels. “Most of them (racers) will get here the Friday before the event. We’ll start racing on Saturday and we don’t leave for the next track until Sunday,” said SRCA volunteer and local car enthusiast Chad Ehrlich.

Racers will arrive back in Great Bend on June 18 with many staying overnight in local hotels. Ehrlich added, “We have a great opportunity to show how great Great Bend is, how awesome our track is and the support our racetrack has from the city of the Great Bend which is something a lot of people don’t have.”

Over 250 racers will make the trip to Great Bend for days one and seven of racing at the newly resurfaced SRCA Dragstrip located at 455 W. Barton County Road, Great Bend. 

Races will take place June 12 and again June 18. Spectator tickets are available at the gate for $15 each. Children 12 and under are free. Competitors must drive their cars between tracks without the help of support vehicles or chase vehicles. Multiple classes fit a large variety of cars from 6 second bruisers to rat rods and everything in between.

The city of Great Bend acquired the B29 Army Air Force Base from the military after it was declared surplus in 1946. The first race was held May 12, 1953. Sunflower Rod and Custom Association (SRCA) was formed January 19, 1954 and joined NHRA in April 1955.

The Great Bend Chamber of Commerce on behalf of SRCA wrote a letter to Wally Parks requesting that Great Bend, KS be the site for the first national event. NHRA said yes and this race would establish the official acceleration records for stand and start quarter mile racing.

The first nationals started with 219 cars and 15,000 spectators. Art Chrisman ran 146.16 mph and Lloyd Scott set a new speed record for American drag racing at 151 mph. In 1956, the one-year-old AHRA said they would like to have their first National event at Great Bend on the 8,000-foot-long track and did so until 1959. In 1960 the president of AHRA moved the event to Kansas City International Raceway.

The club ran races after that and as time went on they slowly fell away from running the track and disbanded.

 In 1993 the club reorganized and went back to the original name of Sunflower Rod and Custom Association. They did this to help in maintaining the track. It was pursued to have it recognized as a Kansas Historical Site and in 1994 was successful. At the same time the track went back to its original name of SRCA Dragstrip, for which it is registered. The facility is now eligible to be registered nationally.

Great Bend to host Rocky Mountain Racer Week drivers

Individuals can continue to register after that date, but only on a space-available basis. The 2021 ALBSK session will be held Sunday, August 1, through Saturday, August 7, at Kansas State University in Manhattan. The program, which was cancelled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, will be in its 83rd year. This year’s session was originally scheduled to be held next week (June 6-12), but earlier this year, Kansas Boys State leadership made a decision to move from its traditional early June event to the first week of August to allow time for the coronavirus vaccine to be fully available to the general public. “We did not want to cancel the event a second year in a row,” said Tom Wierman, Kansas Boys State executive director. “After consulting with numerous individuals, we decided holding a virtual event was not feasible nor of interest to potential delegates after having spent most of the last 15 months going to school virtually. With the assistance and blessing of Kansas State University officials, it became clear that moving the date was in the best interest of the delegates, staff/volunteers and the University.” Traditionally, Kansas Boys State is for individuals who have completed their junior year of high school. With last year’s cancellation, the&nbsp;<a href="https://ksbstate.org/general/2021-registration/" target="_blank">ALBSK program announced in January</a>&nbsp;that it was expanding the pool of registrants for this year’s session to include those who have completed their senior year of high school (those who missed out on last year’s event due to the coronavirus pandemic), as well as individuals who have completed their sophomore year of high school. The American Legion Boys State of Kansas program provides a relevant, interactive, problem-solving experience in leadership and teamwork that develops self-identity, promotes mutual respect and instills civic responsibility. Boys State is a “learning by doing” political exercise that simulates elections, political parties and government at the state, county and local levels, providing opportunities to lead under pressure, showcasing character and working effectively within a team. It’s also an opportunity to gain pride and respect for government, and the price paid by members of the military to preserve democracy. Mann to hold town hall meetings Friday in Stockton, Natoma

MANHATTAN — The beauty of Kansas agriculture has been celebrated throughout the state’s ag industry, and we encourage photographers to capture that beauty and share it with others through the Kansas Department of Agriculture’s annual photo contest. KDA began accepting photos on June 7, and will continue accepting entries through August 16.

This year’s KDA Photo Contest categories were selected to promote different aspects of Kansas agriculture.

&nbsp;Kansas Weather, Celebrating Local Foods, Water in Kansas&nbsp;and&nbsp;Rural Kansas&nbsp;categories will showcase the many places and ways we experience agriculture across the state of Kansas — from the beauty of the Flint Hills and the western plains to the family-run local ranches and colorful farmers’ markets, and the many ways that weather and water have an impact on Kansas agriculture. 

And for the first time ever, we have added a&nbsp;video&nbsp;category to showcase drone footage, harvest videos, or other short clips of under 30 seconds. 

As always, there will be a separate&nbsp;Youth&nbsp;category, for young photographers under age 19. 

Prizes will be awarded to the top two winners in each of the six categories.

KDA serves to advocate for agriculture, the state’s largest industry and economic driver. Photos which best capture the categories will be used throughout the year as we tell the story of Kansas agriculture. After submission, KDA is granted permission to use any photograph for publications, social media, websites, displays, etc. without payment or other consideration from the photographer.

Photo entries should be sent in .jpg format to&nbsp;<a href="mailto:KDA.PhotoContest@ks.gov" target="_blank">KDA.PhotoContest@ks.gov</a>. Videos should be sent in .mp4 or .mov format. Beginning Monday, Hess Services Inc. began constructing improvements at the intersection of 230th Avenue and 55th Street. &nbsp;The construction will take place in multiple phases. &nbsp;<a href="https://www.haysusa.com/ImageRepository/Document?documentId=3999" target="_blank">(See Location Map)</a>&nbsp;&nbsp;The anticipated construction impacts and traffic control operations are as follows:

•&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;The first phase will consist of grading and asphalt pavement widening along 55th Street and the East side of 230th Avenue. &nbsp;During this phase, 230th Avenue and 55th Street will remain open for two-way traffic with restricted lane widths and intermittent flagger operations to manage traffic. &nbsp;Phase I is expected to last four weeks.

•&nbsp; &nbsp; After Phase I is complete,&nbsp;Phase II consists of grading, storm sewer installation, curb and gutter construction, and concrete pavement construction of the intersection and 230th Avenue North of 55th Street. During this phase, 230th Avenue will be closed between 55th Street and 58th Street for the remainder of construction. &nbsp;

Southbound 230th Avenue traffic will be restricted at Feedlot Road to local traffic only, a signed detour is not anticipated to be posted. &nbsp;The intersection will be constructed half at a time and 230th Avenue will be restricted to one northbound lane which will provide access to Eastbound 55th Street only. Southbound 230th Avenue between I-70 and 55th Street will be closed during this portion of phase two. &nbsp;Westbound 55th Street will be restricted at 240th Avenue to local traffic only, a signed detour is not anticipated to be to posted.

TOPEKA - Community members across the state interested in improving active transportation can participate in online Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) Active Transportation Plan (ATP) meetings on Tuesday, June 15. Active transportation includes walking, bicycling, roller skating, using wheelchairs, etc.

During the morning and evening online meetings, participants will be able to view and discuss draft recommendations on the various forms of active transportation, according to the Kansas Department of Transportation.

RUSSELL — From June 10 to -13, Russell will celebrate the 150th Sesquicentennial Celebration of Russell County during Prairiesta 2021.&nbsp;

Friday and Saturday events held at the new museum at 825 N. Kansas, takes you back to relive how the pioneers survived in the late 1800's. Demonstrations in wheat grinding, bread making, milking, butter making, rope making, bees wax candle making, washing, gardening, knitting, aprons, knot tying, and much more will be presented and all ages will be able to participate. Kids can get their "Passport to History" by participating in demonstrations and win prizes.&nbsp; The Russell County Muzzle Loaders will have an encampment set up all four days, and a chuckwagon display and cowboy poet will be on hand along with Will Rogers and Abe Lincoln personalities. A program on Women’s 1800s Fashion will be held on Saturday at 2 pm.&nbsp;

	If you are a Russell County Livestock producer "Burn your brand into history" during our Branding Party. Many other displays from area organizations including 4-H Clubs, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, FFA, Farm Bureau, Smoky Hill Trail Assoc., Santa Fe Trail Assoc., Kansas Post Rock Limestone Coalition, Sternberg Museum of Natural History, and Kansas Strong will be on hand for visitors to learn more about the area and our history.
