Author Roxie Yonkey enjoys Gella’s Diner/Lb. Brewing Co. so much that she included the Hays brewery in her new book 100 "Things to Do in Kansas Before You Die."
It’s No. 20. For the brewery’s Oct. 21 New Beer’s Eve, they are bringing their No. 20 beer out of retirement. Yonkey will be autographing books from 4 to 9 p.m. at the brewery, 117 E. 11th St., Hays.
The book debuted Oct. 1 on Amazon. Eight days later, the book rocketed to the top of the Central United States Travel Guides category. It’s the category’s No. 1 new release. “Kansas has numerous wonderful breweries,” Yonkey said, “but Lb. Brewing was my only candidate for the epitome of Kansas brewing.”
“When Gella’s and Lb. Brewing opened, my husband and I knew nothing about craft beer,” Yonkey recalled. “I didn’t even like beer.” The craft brew revelation was about to change the future author’s mind. “The diner’s wait staff was so patient with us newbies, taking time to teach us about beer. We’ve been sold on the Gella’s experience ever since.”
Gella’s is in the food and drink category. The book’s remaining sections are music and entertainment, sports and recreation, culture and history. Including the 100 Things, the book includes more than 400 places to visit in more than 70 of Kansas’s counties.
Yonkey has been writing about Kansas for over 30 years. "100 Things to Do in Kansas Before You Die" is her second book. In 2020, she co-authored the book Midwest Road Trip Adventures. That book includes road trip guides for all 12 Midwest states. Yonkey wrote the Kansas chapter and the Black Hills section of the South Dakota chapter. Both books are available at Roxie on the Road’s shop.
If you miss the Gella’s signing, the next area signing is at No. 14, The Elephant Bistro & Bar, 732 Main St., Hoxie, from 5 to 7 p.m. on Oct 27. Yonkey returns to No. 93, Downtown Hays, on Nov. 6. She’ll be wining and signing at The Paisley Pear, 1100 Main St., from 1 to 3 p.m.
