Free events planned this month in Ellis, Russell counties&nbsp;

Kansas landowners are invited to attend a pair of Tailgate Talks planned for May 25 and 26 and focused on protecting water quality, creating alternative watering sources for livestock, and other topics.&nbsp;

The Tailgate Talks will take place in Ellis and Russell Counties and are free to the public. All events feature experts from K-State Research and Extension and local landowners.&nbsp;

“These events give producers in our community an essential toolkit for implementing best management practices in their operations,” said Stacie Minson, a K-State Research and Extension watershed specialist. “There are many proven ways that people can protect and improve their water sources and optimize their cattle operations, so we’re excited to offer these demonstrations to the community.”&nbsp;

The first Tailgate Talk will begin at 8 a.m. on May 25, hosted by the Binder family at Pleasant View Farms in Hays. K-State Research and Extension speakers will discuss using existing feed sources in cattle operations, and there will be a live demonstration of a tire tank installation as an alternative water source for livestock.&nbsp;&nbsp;

There are two sessions on May 26. Participants are invited to the Corley Farm in Gorham at 1:30 p.m. to learn about how to incorporate cover crops into a livestock grazing plan and the use of portable fencing in livestock operations. There also will be a live demonstration of a tire tank installation as an alternative livestock water source.&nbsp;

The second session will begin at 5 p.m. at the Blundon Farm in Russell. There, experts will explain the benefits of providing alternative water sources, show how to use geotextile fabric and rock in feeding operations, and discuss different aspects of livestock wells.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dinner will be provided to participants at the Blundon Farm at the conclusion of the program. Speakers will be available throughout to answer questions from the public.&nbsp;

Clinkscales virtual seminars will focus on dementia

In response to a request made by the City of Hays, 
the Kansas Department of Agriculture’s Division of Water Resources has 
issued a control order restricting the watering of lawns and other 
vegetation from private wells between noon and 7 p.m. from June 1 through September 30.&nbsp;

This measure 
is part of a greater interest to reduce water waste and to improve 
conservation practices in the Intensive Groundwater Use Control Area located in Hays.&nbsp;

The IGUCA in 
Hays was established in 1985 at the request of the City to help 
implement water conservation measures. It provides a mechanism to 
address preventable water waste by privately-owned wells.&nbsp;

Currently,
 the City of Hays prohibits the following year-round: the washing down 
of sidewalks, parking lots and driveways; the known loss of water 
through breaks or leaks in plumbing systems; and the escape of water 
from private property onto public property such as sidewalks or into the
 street guttering from landscape irrigation; in addition to outdoor 
water use between noon and 7 p.m. from June 1 through September
 30.&nbsp;

By restricting daytime outdoor water
 use, including the watering of landscapes and gardens, unnecessary 
water loss due to wind and evaporation can be reduced, thus conserving 
the resource for more efficient use.&nbsp;

All 
residents are encouraged to practice the conservation of natural 
resources, including water, and look for ways to improve conservation 
measures in our homes and businesses, both indoors and out.&nbsp;

The city of Hays wants to confirm its citizens are aware of the dangers associated with stormwater. 

According to the National Weather Service, as little as six inches of fast-moving flood water can knock over an adult. During and after rainfall, make sure you and your children stay away from the swift moving waters in the city’s stormwater drainage areas.

 Examples of these drainage areas include Chetolah Creek, Skyline Draw, and Lincoln Draw, but many other areas also carry stormwater after a rain event. 

The city’s storm drainage areas are not intended for recreation and can pose potential life and safety threats as they carry stormwater through the city south to Big Creek. 

A similar safety threat exists when streets become covered by flood waters. It takes just 12 inches of rushing water to carry away most cars. 

The city of Hays has installed street signs alerting residents in multiple areas prone to street flooding. 

Please use caution in these areas. Turn around, don't drown.

Kan. organizations schedule presentations on gun policy

Those who have ever thought about learning to fly can find out more on May 27 as EAA Chapter 1655 hosts a “Fly Now” informational program on learning to fly. Attendees will be registered for a free training flight sponsored by Hays Aircraft. 

EAA Chapter 1655, a local organization that is part of the national Experimental Aircraft Association, is dedicated to growing participation in aviation by sharing the ways people can get started in this fun and fulfilling recreation. The program will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, May 27, at Gella’s in downtown Hays. 

Anyone interested in aviation is invited to attend. Local pilots will be on hand to discuss why and how they learned to fly. The meeting will also cover the steps and requirements in learning to fly, provide tips on how to make it economical, and will culminate with the free introductory flight drawing. If you think piloting your own plane might be fun, just wait till you get behind the stick!

The Hays Chapter of the EAA is one of the newest in the country and is one of approximately 900 chapters around the world, which provide activities for local aviation enthusiasts with a mission of growing participation in aviation by sharing “The Spirit of Aviation.” Chapter activities range from monthly meetings to airport open houses, fly-ins, educational programs, and special events that share aviation with the community and build a stronger bond between local aviation and the public.

The stream advisory is a result of lift station overflow due to heavy rainfall.&nbsp; The city of Natoma is working to repair the problem.

The advisory has been issued because potential elevated bacteria and contaminants may be present in Paradise Creek as it flows east of Natoma. If you live or have activities near this stream, do not enter the stream or allow children or pets to enter the stream.

KDHE will rescind the advisory once flows recede and subsequent bacteria testing indicates secondary (wading) contact has been deemed safe.

Lift station overflow leads to stream advisory east of Natoma

The Hays Area Planning Commission will conduct a public hearing Monday evening for a rezoning request of 32 acres of land owned by Hess Land, LLC located at&nbsp;5809 230th Ave.

The undeveloped property is currently zoned agriculture; owner Dan Hess wants to change the zoning to heavy industrial district.

Hess plans to develop the area for heavy industrial use.&nbsp;

WASHINGTON — U.S. Representative Tracey Mann announced the winners of the 2021 Congressional Art Competition. His office received more than 20 entries from high school students across the Big First.

"It is my great privilege to announce that the winners of this year’s Congressional Art Competition for the First District of Kansas," said Rep. Mann. "There are a lot of tremendous artists in the First District, but one stood out to the judges. Thank you to all the students who participated, and congratulations to the top three contenders."

"Although Mena and I have the same last name, we are not related," said&nbsp; Mann. "I look forward to meeting Mena along with our amazingly talented high school artists around the district."

The submissions were judged and selected by a panel of four members of the Manhattan Arts Center in Manhattan, Kansas. The pieces were reviewed and judged based on composition, design, concept, and execution.

"I want to thank our panelists and judges for this year's art competition: Clive Fullagar, Kelly Yarbrough, Mary Gordon, and Diana Werts,"said Mann. "Thank you for helping our office in the selection process. We appreciate you taking time out of your busy schedules to review the submissions."

“All three winners demonstrated sophisticated composition, good use of color and light,&nbsp;and showed technical expertise and mastery of their medium," said the judging panel. "These three had a strong artistic impact and were clearly distinguishable from the other entries. That said, the overall the quality of submissions was high.”

Come hear what extension specialist have to say about each variety. There is always something in the plot to see and learn from, whether it is about the individual varieties, insects or diseases that are sometimes spotted in the plot.

The field day location is north of the Victoria Exit on Cathedral Road, go one mile west on Fairground Road and turn south onto 330th Avenue.

A free meal and refreshments will immediately follow the field day.

All interested people are invited to attend. No RSVP necessary.

Kansas Leopold Conservation Award application deadline is June 1

LINCOLN, NEBRASKA - Samuel Thornton Crowley of Hays was among 3,512 graduates who received degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) during commencement exercises May 7 and 8.

Crowley earned a Bachelor of Arts with high distinction from the College of Arts and Sciences.

The graduates are from 58 countries, 43 states and the District of Columbia, and more than 250 Nebraska communities.

Tom Osborne, former Nebraska football coach, athletic director and congressman, delivered the keynote address during the undergraduate ceremonies May 8 at Memorial Stadium. Jennifer Clarke, professor of food science and technology, and statistics, and director of the Quantitative Life Sciences Initiative at Nebraska, gave the address at the graduate and professional degrees ceremony May 7 at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Riko Bishop, a judge of the Nebraska Court of Appeals, spoke to the law graduates May 7 at the arena.

The university presented Connie Clifton Rath, president of the Clifton Foundation, with an honorary Doctor of Commerce during the morning undergraduate ceremony.

The May exercises were the first time since December 2019 - before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic - that the university held full-fledged commencement ceremonies in person.

NW Kan. session on housing set for May 27 in Colby

The Hays Fire Department will be inspecting and flow testing fire hydrants on Thursday in the area from Vine St. to Indian Trail between 27th St. and 22nd St. and also from Vine St. to Main St. between 12th St. and 22nd St. 

This is part of a coordinated effort by the city of Hays to inspect all fire hydrants in the city and flush all water mains annually. 

Inspecting fire hydrants ensures that the valves operate properly and that there is no damage or obstructions that will prevent or interfere with the prompt use of fire hydrants in an emergency. Firefighters are also checking the pressure and volume of water mains in each neighborhood for firefighting purposes.

The associated flushing of water mains allows chlorine to be distributed throughout the system to eliminate bio-filming in the water mains. Slight discoloration of the water supply may be encountered although there will be no health risks to the consumer.
