Marla Matkin, Hill City, an independent humanities scholar and performer, will present “Pioneering Women” Sunday, Jan. 26 at 3 p.m. at the Hoxie High School Auditorium.

Admission to the Western Plains Arts Association program is by season ticket or at the door.

This program is funded by numerous businesses, individuals, The Sheridan County Community Foundation, and the Dane G. Hansen Foundation.

Matkin will provide an elementary school program in the Quinter gym at 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 27. &nbsp;

Matkin comes by her love of history having been born in Dodge City and raised nearby.&nbsp; She is on a continuing search to expand her knowledge and understanding of the legend and lore surrounding the region and its people.&nbsp;This deep connection can be traced back to her great-grandparents who homesteaded in southwest Kansas in 1877. 

Add to this her love of drama and she makes a compelling case for the ladies she portrays and the history she imparts as teacher, historian, living historian and now children’s author.

A graduate of Fort Hays State University with a degree in education, she has informed, inspired, as well as entertained her audiences for 25 years from the heartland to the Smithsonian.&nbsp;

In addition to&nbsp;Pioneering Women,&nbsp;Matkin presents related programs to communities throughout America’s heartland, especially in Kansas and Nebraska.&nbsp;

We have noticed an increase in foot traffic on the lake’s surface, and we urge the public to understand the dangers associated with walking or recreating on frozen water, particularly as the lake is currently being drained.

Draining a lake impacts the stability and thickness of the ice, making it highly unpredictable and unsafe. Even if the ice appears solid, varying depths and water movement beneath the surface can create weak spots that may not support weight.

Your safety is our priority, and we encourage everyone to exercise extreme caution and avoid unnecessary risks. If you see someone in distress or fall through the ice, call 911 immediately.

Heartland Community Foundation is sponsoring a Town Hall Meeting called Ellis County Solutions Summit, facilitated by Hansen Foundation's Betty Johnson.

"We've had great success with the ideas that have come out of previous Strategic Doings for Ellis County the past few years, with many of them implemented and enhancing the county," Johnson said.

"We look forward to hearing from anyone who wants to come to the session, brainstorm with us and be a part of making good things happen.&nbsp;We are open to all ideas and suggestions and are excited to start some new projects," she said.

Johnson said the goal is to get people thinking and talking about what could and should happen in Ellis County, brainstorm how to implement it, and work to make it happen with some action items moving forward.&nbsp;

The Solutions Summit will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Feb. 4 at the Rose Garden Banquet Hall.

TOPEKA — The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has rescinded a boil water advisory for the City of Hays public water supply system located in Ellis County. 

The advisory was issued because of a waterline break resulting in a loss of pressure in the distribution system.&nbsp; Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.&nbsp;

The advisory remains in place for Countryside Estates Mobile Home Park pending laboratory results from water samples collected from the mobile home park.

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. 

Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind notice following testing at a certified laboratory.

Drinking water samples collected from the City of Hays indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved. &nbsp;

Holy Family Elementary open house is Jan. 30

GREAT BEND — Anyone who lives in Kansas quickly learns that the weather can go from serene to severe in minutes, and the Barton Community College STEM club is bringing a host of professionals together to talk about tornadoes, thunderstorms, and everything in between at the “Exploring our Weather Systems” event from 12:30-3 p.m. Feb. 22 in the BCC Math and Science Building, Room S-118, Great Bend.

Barton Chemistry Instructor Dr. Amanda Alliband said general interest in the weather, especially severe events, has increased in the past several years.

“We have several Barton STEM Club members who have a strong interest in meteorology and really were searching for a way to share their passion with members of the community, and we think this event will be a great opportunity for that,” she said.

Sponsored by Auto Body Repair Shop Inc. and Town and Country Supermarket, this free event aims to bring weather awareness to the community. 

It will feature expert presenters, including storm chasers Bryce Kintigh and Beth Bowdoin, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration representatives, meteorologist at Kansas State University and Mesonet Network Manager Christopher “Chip” Redmond, Storm of Passion and Live Storm Chasers, and KWCH meteorologists, all of which will share insights on how weather impacts our lives.

This program will be held at the Hoisington Activity Center at 1200 Susank Road in Hoisington from 5:30-8:30 p.m.

 Keith Harmoney, KSRE range scientist and Jess Crockford from the Smoky Hills Prescribed Burn Association with be talking about how to identify invasive plants in your rangeland and how to control them. There will also be discussion about the Kansas NRCS Great Plains Grassland Initiative and a proposed Golden Belt Prescribed Fire Association.

The Chamber in Hays is pleased to announce the upcoming Child Care Provider Quarterly Professional Development Series, a free event designed to support the growth and education of local child care providers.

All area child care professionals are encouraged to attend and take advantage of the opportunity to receive credit toward annual recertification requirements.

The event will be hosted Tuesday, Jan. 21 at The Rose Garden Banquet Hall &amp; Catering, 2350 E. 8th St.

The professional development session will feature Josh Tanguay, a licensed clinical psychotherapist and owner of Western Kansas Therapy Associates, as the keynote speaker.

Tanguay’s presentation, titled “Having Difficult Conversations with Caregivers,” aims to help child care professionals navigate challenging discussions around children who may need additional therapy or services.

He will also address ways to manage concerning behaviors exhibited by children, address problematic interactions between caregivers, and set realistic expectations for everyone involved.

This presentation will teach attendees effective communication strategies, gain insights into conflict resolution, and improve their approach to fostering positive relationships with caregivers.

In addition to the keynote address, The Chamber will provide free fingerprinting services from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Attendees will have the chance to get fingerprinted on-site, which assists them in meeting the requirements for their professional licenses.

Preference for fingerprinting will be given to child care providers and their spouses whose fingerprints expire within 45 to 60 days of each scheduled event.

This convenient service is designed to help area child care professionals stay current with regulatory obligations while saving them time and resources.

The Cottonwood Extension District along with other county and district Extension offices throughout the state are offering several programs that may be of interest to agricultural producers and their families this winter.

Transition planning is always a hot topic, especially among agriculture producers and agriculture landowners. This winter K-State Research &amp; Extension (KSRE) County and Districts are teaming up with the KSRE Agriculture Economics Department to offer throughout the state, the series “Leaving a Lasting Legacy for Midwestern Farm Women – Succession Planning." 

This program will feature a livestreamed keynote presentation and local hands-on activities to motivate participants to create farm succession plans and facilitate family and business conversations around this vital topic.

According to data from the U.S. Census, 70% of U.S. farmland will transfer to the next generation within 20 years.

The Succession Planning workshops will be held on successive Tuesdays in Great Bend and Hays beginning Jan. 21 and 28, and continuing on Feb. 4 and 11. To learn more and to register by the Jan. 13th deadline go to <a href="https://www.agmanager.info/">www.agmanager.info</a>.

The popular annual “Cover Your Acres Winter Conference" in Oberlin will be held January 21 and 22. The same programs will be offered both days of the conference, beginning at 8:30 a.m. and concluding at 5:00 p.m. 

The conference, which typically draws more than 400 attendees from Kansas and other states, highlights the latest technology, methods, and conservation practices to improve crop production in the region. Thursday's Hays City Commission meeting canceled

TOPEKA — The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for the City of Hays public water supply system.&nbsp; This advisory also includes customers of Countryside Estates Mobile Home Park.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

The advisory took effect on January 21 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. 

KDHE officials issued the advisory because of a waterline break resulting in a loss of pressure in the distribution system.&nbsp;

Two waterline breaks occurred in Hays Monday, Jeff Crispin, water resources department director, told Hays Post. &nbsp;"Due to difficulty shutting down one of them to make the repair, we lost system pressure," Crispin said.

The two breaks were at 1240 Vine and the 400 block of West 18th.

Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.&nbsp;

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.</li>

This only applies to the recycling materials – regular trash will be collected as normal.  Please note that the exact time of collection of the regular trash may be delayed. Please make sure your polycarts are out by 7:00 AM and keep in mind the trucks have no set time schedule. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause our customers.

Please be advised that City of Hays crews will be removing snow from the downtown area from Oak to Fort streets and 7th to 13th streets, Main Street from 6th to 16th streets, and West 9th and 10th streets in the 100 and 200 blocks, tonight, Monday, January 6, 2025, starting at approximately 10 p.m.  City crews request that cars be removed from these areas to allow the crews the ability to completely plow the street and the on-street parking areas.
