Per Ellis County resolution, the Ellis County Fire Department is announcing the relaxation of the burn ban in all the unincorporated areas of Ellis County, effective immediately.

Due to the rainfall in portions of Ellis County and the favorable forecast for moisture throughout the week, the ban is being lifted due to the changing conditions.

If the drought persists alongside the summer temperatures, a burn ban might be implemented again at a later date.

One of the best ways to keep your mind and body functioning at its best is to exercise. When I worked with small children we always used to say, “the best exercise for the brain is exercise!” The same holds true as we age. 

Exercise produces a wide range of benefits for not only our physical health, but also mental health. Regular participation in strengthening exercises can help you build muscle and increase bone density. It can also help relieve stress and reduce depression symptoms. 

The Stay Strong, Stay Healthy program focuses on improving the health and well being of older adults. The goal of the program is to provide safe, structured and effective strength training for adults. No one is too inactive, or too young to participate. 

Strength training promotes quality of life and independence, especially for adults over age 60. Stay Strong, Stay Healthy is an evidence-based program that has been shown to increase strength, balance, and flexibility.

You might be asking yourself, “I wonder what we’ll do?” It is an eight-week program that meets twice a week for one-hour. We will do warm up exercises, easy strengthening exercises, with or without weights, based on your preference, and finish with cool-down stretches and breathing exercises. 

The best part is there is no membership fee like at a gym and there are no special clothes or equipment needed. We will have weights available if you want to use them. You will work at your own pace and progress as you are able. There are modifications to the exercises based on your own fitness level.

When I worked with small children we always used to say, “the best exercise for the brain is exercise!” The same holds true as we age. Exercise produces a wide range of benefits for not only our physical health, but also mental health. Regular participation in strengthening exercises can help you build muscle and increase bone density. It can also help relieve stress and reduce depression symptoms. The Stay Strong, Stay Healthy program focuses on improving the health and well being of older adults. The goal of the program is to provide safe, structured and effective strength training for adults. No one is too inactive, or too young to participate. Strength training promotes quality of life and independence, especially for adults over age 60. Stay Strong, Stay Healthy is an evidence-based program that has been shown to increase strength, balance, and flexibility.You might be asking yourself, “I wonder what we’ll do?” It is an eight-week program that meets twice a week for one-hour. We will do warm up exercises, easy strengthening exercises, with or without weights, based on your preference, and finish with cool-down stretches and breathing exercises. The best part is there is no membership fee like at a gym and there are no special clothes or equipment needed. We will have weights available if you want to use them. You will work at your own pace and progress as you are able. The original cast featured Kim Stanley as Cherie, Albert Salmi as Bo Decker, and Elaine Stritch as Grace Hoylard. The production was directed by Harold Clurman, and the play was later adapted into the 1956 film starring Marilyn Monroe.

William Inge, the playwright behind 'Bus Stop', was born in Independence, Kansas, and is often called the “Playwright of the Midwest.” Inge’s deeply human characters and intimate portrayals of small-town life earned him a Pulitzer Prize ('Picnic') and made him one of the defining voices in American theater during the mid-20th century.

'Bus Stop' is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., New York.

Holy Family Elementary School notes, April 21-25, 2025

State and local water leaders are planning a water summit in May to focus on water&nbsp;resource issues that most impact local communities.

The Know Water Summit will take place from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. on May 2, at the Hilton Garden Inn in&nbsp;Hays.

Organizers say there will be an optional Environmental Tour will be offered at 5 p.m. on&nbsp;May 1, for those interested in getting a closer look at municipal water quality facilities and water quality&nbsp;efforts at a local farm.

Registration is required. The cost for the summit (including the tour) is $25. The registration deadline is&nbsp;April 25. Those interested in attending can register at <a href="https://kstate.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_a3IfjAZOsvpkT6m">https://bit.ly/KnowWaterSummit</a>.

Organizers say the agenda is filled with information and activities focusing on water conservation and&nbsp;water quality specific to western Kansas.

"On behalf of Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas, I am excited to announce our expansion into Colby," said Megan Robl, executive director of Catholic Charities. "Our goal is to reach families on the margins throughout Western Kansas, ensuring that everyone has access to the support they need."

On Wednesday, May 14, Catholic Charities will conduct a trial run, delivering food and hygiene items directly to residents of Colby. This initiative reflects the organization's ongoing commitment to addressing the needs of individuals and families facing hardship.

“I am excited for Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas to be present and bring&nbsp;their services to Colby,” said Father Brian Lager, pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Colby. “Many families in our community could&nbsp;use some extra help each month with food, hygiene products, and more and I believe their presence in our community will make a great impact."

Here are the details for the Colby outreach stop:

• Location:&nbsp;Knights of Columbus parking lot, 435 N. Sterling Ave. • Time:&nbsp;10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

During the outreach stops, guests are requested to remain in their vehicles for their convenience and safety. Catholic Charities staff will come directly to them, streamlining the process and ensuring efficient distribution.

Please note that to receive assistance, attendees must have incomes at or below 130% of the federal poverty guidelines. Proof of income will be required.

Catholic Charities currently visits 26 rural communities across the Diocese of Salina every month, in addition to serving from its three office locations in Hays, Salina, and Manhattan. Beginning in July, the organization plans to include regular monthly visits to Colby.

Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas expanding outreach services to Colby

On Saturday, April 26, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Ellis County Sheriff's Office will be participating&nbsp;in the Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

This bi-annual&nbsp;event allows for the public to anonymously dispose of old, unused, unwanted, or no longer needed&nbsp;medications.

The event will be held in the north parking lot of the Ellis County Law Enforcement Center,&nbsp;105 W. 12th St., Hays.

The Ellis County Sheriff's Office is encouraging the public to remove unused and unneeded medications&nbsp;from their homes as a measure of preventing medication misuse and opioid addiction from ever&nbsp;starting.

Items that will be accepted are tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid forms of prescription drugs.

Prescription medications can be disposed of in the original container or placed in a Ziploc bag.

Liquids (including intravenous solutions), syringes and other sharps such as diabetic&nbsp;needles and Epi-Pens, as well as illicit drugs will not be accepted.

 </figure>Ellis County SheriffOn Saturday, April 26, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Ellis County Sheriff's Office will be participating&nbsp;in the Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.This bi-annual&nbsp;event allows for the public to anonymously dispose of old, unused, unwanted, or no longer needed&nbsp;medications.The event will be held in the north parking lot of the Ellis County Law Enforcement Center,&nbsp;105 W. 12th St., Hays.The Ellis County Sheriff's Office is encouraging the public to remove unused and unneeded medications&nbsp;from their homes as a measure of preventing medication misuse and opioid addiction from ever&nbsp;starting.Items that will be accepted are tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid forms of prescription drugs.Prescription medications can be disposed of in the original container or placed in a Ziploc bag.Liquids (including intravenous solutions), syringes and other sharps such as diabetic&nbsp;needles and Epi-Pens, as well as illicit drugs will not be accepted.For more information, contact Detective Brian Shannon, Ellis County Drug Enforcement Unit, at 785-621-1668.

&nbsp;GREAT BEND — Cheyenne Bottoms is located on the Central Flyway, a bird migration route that connects Canada to South America. 

Seventy percent of all the different shorebird species in North America have been recorded at Cheyenne Bottoms; late April is prime time to view the birds using our wetlands for rest and fuel.

Join&nbsp;Kansas Wetlands Education Center&nbsp;on April 21 to see this migration in person. We will be offering two guided birding tours around Cheyenne Bottoms. Our van seats 11 birdwatchers, and extra vehicles can caravan behind our bird van which will stop at several locations to view wildlife.

2-3 p.m. – We will show Flyways, a Nature episode that previously aired on PBS, in our auditorium. This documentary follows the shorebirds that fly thousands of miles each year along flyways.

More than 200 species, such as Long-billed Curlews, Lesser Yellowlegs, Red Knots, and Hudsonian Godwits, travel from feeding grounds in the southern hemisphere to breeding grounds in the Arctic and back again, flying up to nine days non-stop without food or water. But their populations are crashing amidst climate change and urban development.

Follow a conservation movement of bird-loving experts and citizen scientists as they mobilize to the challenge of understanding and saving shorebirds. Many of the birds featured in the documentary can be spotted at Cheyenne Bottoms on April 21.

2-3 p.m. – As the 53-minute documentary may be too long for young audiences, this tour will be designed for families with young children. We will stop at our observation tower, learn to use binoculars, identify different birds, look for aquatic invertebrates, and play a migration game.

3-4 p.m. – Those who enjoy the Flyways documentary will go on a birding tour around Cheyenne Bottoms. This is a free program. No registration is required.&nbsp;

The Ellis County landfill will be open on Friday, April 18 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with no dumping 15 minutes prior to close. 

 The landfill will be closed all day on Saturday, April 19 in observance of the Good Friday holiday. 

 All other hours of operation will remain the same during this week.

Russell doctor to talk wound care on 'Doctors on Call' on Tuesday

DOWNS — The 31st annual Kansas Storytelling Festival is only a few weeks away. The Festival will be held on Friday and Saturday, April 25 and 26, 2025 in Downs. 

As the “Storytelling Capital of Kansas,” the small northcentral town of Downs welcomes you to a weekend of stories and unforgettable hospitality.

This celebration of the art of storytelling promises to be an event filled with laughter, wonder, and the timeless magic of storytelling. Nationally-known festival favorites are invited, along with new voices for stories from all genres for all ages. 

Headlining storytellers are Ed Stivender, Pipppa White, Michael D. McCarty, Priscilla Howe, and Paul Strickland.

Ed Stivender was inducted into the National Storytelling Association’s Circle of Excellence in 1996. After giving up his Connecticut school teaching job, Ed has told his mostly humorous stories around the globe and has been a featured storyteller at national and international festivals.

Pippa White calls her One’s Company Productions “part theatre, part storytelling, part history.” She has performed at universities and colleges, conferences, performing arts centers, museums, libraries, and festivals in over 30 states. Audiences call them unique, captivating, and touching. One audience member said, “her performances are entertainment wrapped in history intertwined with “inspiration”.

Michael D. McCarty is a newcomer to the Kansas festival. He specializes in stories of African and African-American history and culture, multi-cultural stories, etc. Michael describes his life as: student activist, Black Panther, U.S. Army martial arts instructor, acupuncturist, world traveler, spiritual seeker, construction worker, storyteller, husband, father, crazy friend. Never a dull moment!

Priscilla Howe is primarily known as a performer for children, but she has a full repertoire of stories for grownups and older kids. She offers a disclaimer, with a little wink: "All my stories start with the seed of truth." Priscilla tours the country and abroad telling stories and giving workshops. To date, she has performed in 14 countries.

Paul Strickland always adapts his stories to whatever audience is in front of him, he loves telling stories in every imaginable environment, from comedy clubs to elementary and middle schools, corporate events and even two prisons. Paul was a Featured Teller: NEW VOICE at the National Storytelling Festival in 2023.

Listeners will also enjoy the Tall Tales Contest (Friday night), the local “Legends” Storytellers including Native American stories and the Master Storytellers (previous winners of three tall tales contests).

After giving up his Connecticut school teaching job, Ed has told his mostly humorous stories around the globe and has been a featured storyteller at national and international festivals.Pippa White calls her One’s Company Productions “part theatre, part storytelling, part history.” She has performed at universities and colleges, conferences, performing arts centers, museums, libraries, and festivals in over 30 states. Audiences call them unique, captivating, and touching. One audience member said, “her performances are entertainment wrapped in history intertwined with “inspiration”.Michael D. McCarty is a newcomer to the Kansas festival. He specializes in stories of African and African-American history and culture, multi-cultural stories, etc. Michael describes his life as: student activist, Black Panther, U.S. Army martial arts instructor, acupuncturist, world traveler, spiritual seeker, construction worker, storyteller, husband, father, crazy friend. Never a dull moment!Priscilla Howe is primarily known as a performer for children, but she has a full repertoire of stories for grownups and older kids. She offers a disclaimer, with a little wink: "All my stories start with the seed of truth." Priscilla tours the country and abroad telling stories and giving workshops. To date, she has performed in 14 countries.Paul Strickland always adapts his stories to whatever audience is in front of him, he loves telling stories in every imaginable environment, from comedy clubs to elementary and middle schools, corporate events and even two prisons. Paul was a Featured Teller: NEW VOICE at the National Storytelling Festival in 2023.Listeners will also enjoy the Tall Tales Contest (Friday night), the local “Legends” Storytellers including Native American stories and the Master Storytellers (previous winners of three tall tales contests). Bring your own stories to tell during the Swappin’ Grounds session on Saturday afternoon. Several K-State Research &amp; Extension Districts and counties are offering a hazardous occupation safety training in agriculture (tractor and farm safety course) for youth on Saturday, April 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The training will take place at Hoxie Implement, 933 Oak Ave., Hoxie.

K-State Research &amp; Extension agents, along with other organizations, will teach the course, covering critical farm and machinery safety topics, including proper tractor operation and maintenance, grain safety, implement use safety, livestock safety, and more.

The U.S. Department of Labor requires youth ages 14–15 to complete this safety training to work on a farm for someone other than their parents—and in some cases, even when working on a family farm.

Pre-training assignments must be completed before April 26. Registration fee: $10 (due by Tuesday, April 22).
