COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Fort Hays State improved to 14-6 overall on the season with a doubleheader sweep of Adams State on Wednesday. The Tigers won by scores of 8-0 (5 inn.) and 12-6, finishing their quick trip to Colorado 3-1. FHSU hit five home runs on the day, including four in the first game.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/lilly-mohr/8194">Lilly Mohr</a>&nbsp;hit two bombs in the first contest to tie the FHSU single-game record, accomplished for a 33rd&nbsp;time.

Fort Hays State 8, Adams State 0 (5 inn.) Fort Hays State used the long ball to generate six of their eight runs in a run-rule victory over Adams State. The Tigers did all of their offensive damage from the second through fifth innings.

Sisters&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/lilly-mohr/8194">Lilly Mohr</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/lexi-mohr/8187">Lexi Mohr</a>&nbsp;accounted for three of the four Tiger home runs in the game. Lexi walked in front of Lilly in the second inning and Lilly launched a two-run homer to put the Tigers up 2-0. Schmidt did not allow any hits, while Johnson allowed two. Johnson picked up the win in relief.

Fort Hays State 12, Adams State 6 A six-run sixth inning was the difference maker for the Tigers in a 12-6 win over the Grizzlies in the second contest of the day. FHSU held a 3-1 lead through three and a half innings before Adams moved in front 4-3 with a three-run bottom half of the fourth. With the big inning, FHSU jumped on top 9-4 and then added three more runs in the seventh to finish the game with a sizable lead.

Early in the game,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/lexi-mohr/8187">Lexi Mohr</a>&nbsp;hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1 in the second. The Tigers scored a go-ahead run on a wild pitch in the fourth and then Mohr had another RBI, this time on a single to make it 3-1.

EMPORIA - Hays High opened their first appearance at the KSHSAA State Basketball Tournament since 1996 with a game against St. Thomas Aquinas. The trip was short lived as the Indians fall 51-48.

The Saints jumped out to a 10-2 lead over the first six minutes of the game. Hays scored hit a three in the final minute of the first quarter that sparked an 11-0 run that gave the Indians a lead at 13-10 with 4:35 left in the second quarter.

Hays pushed their lead up to eight at 21-13 with ninety seconds left before halftime. Aquinas ended those ninety seconds with a 6-2 spurt which included their only field goal of the second quarter as time expired. Hays took a 23-19 lead into halftime.

Hays quickly built their lead back to eight at the beginning of the third quarter at 27-19. The Indians were quickly saddled with foul trouble. Over the next three minutes the Saints went on an 11-0 run to regain the lead at 30-27. The two teams traded blows over the remaining three minutes of the quarter and settled on a 38 all tie heading to the fourth.

Each team possessed the lead in the fourth. Hays led 45-43 and 48-46 but each time the Saints answered on their next possession. The final points for Hays came with 2:15 left in the game. Aquinas scored just three, but it was enough for the victory.

Hays got one last opportunity with seven second remaining but couldn't get a clean look away to tie the game falling 51-48.

Patrick
Frank Herrman, 78, Salina, KS passed away March 10, 2025 at Smoky Hill Health
Rehabilitation Center. He was born to Balser and Rosanna (Legleiter) Herrman on
3/17/1946 at La Crosse, KS. He moved to Salina, KS from Sturgis, SD in June of
2024. He resided in Sturgis for 5 ½ years.

Pat
graduated from Sylvan Grove High School in 1965. He enlisted in the United
State Air Force after graduation. Pat was a Vietnam Veteran having served in
Cam Ranh Bay, South Vietnam having reached the rank of Sergeant. His MOS was
Air Passenger Specialist. He was honorably discharged in February 1969. In June
of 2017 he was able to go on the Honor Flight to Washington, DC with his
brother David. Pat was a Lifetime member of the VFW.

Patrick
married Lois Karst on May 11, 1974. Lois passed away in January 2014 before
they could celebrate their 40th Wedding Anniversary. To this union they adopted
two children. He was a former member of Messiah Lutheran Church Hays, KS. He
was formerly married to Linda Meitler.

Pat was
a Transportation Driver for Hays School District, Hays KS and Lake Havasu
School District, Lake Havasu, AZ. While employed at Lake Havasu School District
he won several first place trophies for their Bus Drivers Rodeos. He was also
their Bus Driver Trainer where he received many awards and certificates for his
excellence in the training program. He retired from the Lake Havasu School
District. During his years he was also an Oil Tank water truck driver and
Semi-truck driver.

Survivors
include his son, Nicholas Herrman, Las Vegas, NV and a daughter, Kaylene
Herrman, South Dakota. Three grandchildren Perry, Maxwell and Brixton. Brothers
David(Charlotte)Herrman, Salina, KS, Jerry(Gayle)Herrman, Garden City, KS and
John(Deb)Herrman, Osborne, KS. Brother-in-laws Tom(Mary)Karst, Hays, KS,
Mark(Shannon)Karst, Victoria, KS and Lance Smith, Hays, KS. Sister-in-laws
Diane(Gene)Schmidt, Great Bend, KS, and Marilyn(Larry)Schumacher, Lyons, KS.
Many nieces and nephews.

He was
preceded in death by his wife Lois, his parents Bill and Rosanna Herrman,
brother Samuel Herrman. Father-in-law and mother-in-law Albert and Doris Karst.

One of the items discussed at length during the recent <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/909306ea-6223-4960-bd5f-99c19bb83817">Hays City Commission retreat</a> was the proposal for increasing city employee pay to at least $20 an hour.

Commissioner Reese Barrick said he was 'pretty passionate' about it.

During an earlier city work session, Barrick suggested the city should lead the way and encouraged local businesses to follow.

“If we want a community where everyone can participate and put money back into the community by shopping everywhere, then we have to pay people enough so they can participate. We can take care of the poverty level. It’s really a wage thing,” Barrick said at the recent work session.

A recent <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/17290ca2-a64d-4482-aecd-213534370fcd">poverty analysis </a>showed Hays has the highest poverty rate in the multi-county region at 18%.&nbsp;

According to the United Way of Ellis County, another 23% were classified as Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed, or ALICE. These households are above the federal poverty level but cannot afford their county's basic cost of living, said Erica Berges, local executive director. They do not qualify for public assistance.

"Forty percent of our Ellis County population is living paycheck to paycheck," Barrick said during the March 1 retreat.&nbsp; "If we want people to live and stay in Hays, that's ($20 an hour) the bare minimum. It's a gross annual wage of $41,600.

"If we want the rest of the city to do it, we should do it. ...&nbsp;

"This would also mean better mental health for our residents when they're not stressed about what bill is coming up next.

"This is feasible, and I think it's the right thing to do," Barrick said.

Information provided by Erin Giebler, director of human resources, shows 20 of Hays' 183 full-time employees make less than $20 an hour, with wages ranging from $17.52 to $19.89 an hour.

The lower starting wage positions are in the offices of account clerk (finance), records clerk (police/courts), AP clerk (finance), administrative assistant (multiple), maintenance worker (multiple), plant operator (water resources), mechanic (public works), and community service officer (police).

Total compensation is not figured in the pay amount.

Giebler outlined four options for adjusting pay plans, each with pros and cons.

The increased cost would range from a high of more than $2 million annually if all 183 full-time employees' pay were increased by the same amount/percentage to a low annual cost of $85,000 if pay were adjusted only for those 20 employees making less than $20 an hour.

Giebler recommended option three, which would pay those who qualify $20 an hour and make minor adjustments to other employees' pay if necessary. The total annual cost would be $204,000.

"When we have done pay plan adjustments in the past, we used option three. ... While not always the popular choice among employees, it is the choice that helps reach $20 and is sustainable now and in the future," Giebler wrote in her information for commissioners.&nbsp;

She noted the changes would cause compression between pay raises and within pay ranges. 

"Employees not given a pay increase may not feel they're being treated fairly,"&nbsp;Giebler said.

"I'll deal with some grumbling of those who did not get a raise," said City Manager Toby Dougherty.

"We need to look at the total compensation package," said Mayor Sandy Jacobs, who ultimately declared herself against the proposal. "This is hard for me.

"You need to look at our vacation and sick leave policies," Jacobs said. "We offer a pretty good package. I think we're a great employer with good salaries and benefits.

Barrick said, "I love our total compensation package, but you're not able to spend all that at the store."

Dougherty said the city has sometimes had difficulty hiring people for the lower paid positions.&nbsp;

"Would other businesses follow our lead?" asked Alaina Cunningham, commissioner. She said HaysMed recently increased its base pay for some positions to $14 an hour from $12 an hour.

"They may or may not," Barrick said, "but somebody has to take the lead." He talked about several restaurants in Seattle raising their wages, which "raised the bar everywhere."

Commissioner Shaun Musil, the former owner of Paisley Pear Wine Bar, Bistro and Market in downtown Hays, said, "I'm think you're going to hurt small businesses."

"We went up 15% on our prices to cover wage increases after McDonald's started paying more, and that hurt us," Musil said.

After considerable discussion, Mayor Jacobs tabled the issue.

"It's in a 'wait and see' hold for now," Jarrod Kuckelman, assistant city manager, said this week.

"There's a potential it may come up again for 2026 budget preparations or possibly another work session," he said.

Commissioner Barrick 'passionate' about $20 pay for city employees, local businesses

Tickets are still available for the fourth annual “Becoming Light Together” dinner and fundraiser at Fort Hays State University on Saturday, April 12.

The event, sponsored by the Comeau Catholic Campus Center is an evening to "celebrate the good work Christ is doing in the hearts of Fort Hays Catholic students, talk about the future and cultivate support for years to come."

More than 450 students actively participate in the Catholic Tigers organization with FHSU through various events such as Wednesday Catholic Tigers, bible studies, retreats, Mass and men's and women's nights.

Along with FHSU Chaplain Father Andy Hammeke, guest speakers for the night will be FHSU graduate Deacon Adam Urban, who will be ordained a Catholic priest in May, and current student Jianna Rojas from Goddard.

The event will kick off with a 4:30 p.m. rosary in the St. Francis of Assisi Chapel, followed by Mass at 5 p.m. celebrated by Bishop Gerald Vincke, then a social hour – all at the Comeau Catholic Campus Center.

The dinner and program are set to begin at 7 p.m. in the Fort Hays Ballroom of the Fort Hays State University Memorial Union.

 Since joining HaysMed in an interim capacity in October 2024, Rieth has exemplified a leadership style rooted in transparency, direct engagement, and a profound commitment to patient care.

Throughout his tenure at HaysMed, Rieth has actively worked to understand the hospital’s systems and processes deeply, forging meaningful connections with both associates and patients. His approach has positioned him to effectively lead and implement strategic initiatives, leveraging a solid grasp of operational strengths and areas for growth.

During recent discussions about his journey in healthcare and his vision for the future, Rieth shared insights into the challenges he has faced and his strategic responses.

"One of the main challenges has been navigating the complexities of healthcare regulations while striving to improve patient care efficiency," Rieth said. Western Cooperative Electric welcomes new manager of member services

The Fort Hays State women's basketball continued its run in both national polls entering the NCAA Tournament this week. The Tigers are No. 11 in the WBCA Top 25 Poll and No. 16 in the D2CSC Top 25 Media Poll in the latest releases of each on Tuesday.

Four of the teams participating in the Central Regional of the NCAA Tournament this week are ranked among the Top 25 of the WBCA Poll. Regional host Pittsburg State leads the way at No. 7, while Concordia-St. Paul is right behind at No. 8. FHSU is No. 11, while Southwest Minnesota State is No. 18. Three of the other four teams competing in the regional are among the receiving votes section, which includes Minnesota State, Southern Nazarene, and Harding. Missouri Western is the only team among the eight-team regional not receiving votes in the WBCA poll, however it is receiving votes in the D2CSC poll.

Fort Hays State enters the NCAA Tournament at 27-4 overall after making it to the MIAA Tournament championship game. The 27 wins for the Tigers are their most since the 2021-22 season when they finished with 30.

Fort Hays State has now been listed in the top 25 120 times. FHSU is 184-47 when ranked and 131-28 when ranked inside the top 10. The Tigers are now 13-4 in the MIAA Championship while ranked.

The Tigers will open the NCAA Tournament on Friday (March 14, 12 p.m.) when they play Southern Nazarene.

🏀 Tiger women enter NCAA Tournament ranked 11th/16th in national polls

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Fort Hays State Softball picked up a split in its doubleheader with UC-Colorado Springs on Tuesday. The Tigers fell in the first contest 8-0 before bouncing back for a 5-1 win in the second. FHSU moved to 12-6 overall on the season with the results, while they stopped a nine-game winning streak for UCCS, which is now 16-10 overall.

UC-Colorado Springs 8, Fort Hays State 0 (5 inn.) The Tigers struggled to get anything going offensively against Kailey Bond, scratching out just two hits in a contest that ended by run rule.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/lilliana-ramirez-johnson/8189">Lilliana Ramirez-Johnson</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/kaydawn-haag/8195">Kaydawn Haag</a>&nbsp;were the only Tigers to record hits, both singles.

The Mountain Lions generated their first three runs of the game in the first off five-straight hits. A double and single produced the first run, then three more singles in a row culminated in another pair of runs scoring. Another two-out RBI single in the second inning produced the fourth run of the game.

An RBI triple in the fifth resulted in the end of&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/savanah-egger/8183">Savanah Egger's</a>&nbsp;outing in the pitching circle.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/kylie-caspersen/8205">Kylie Caspersen</a>&nbsp;entered in relief and allowed a walk and then a three-run home run by Halley Redd that ended the game by run rule. Egger allowed six runs on 10 hits in 4.1 innings of work, while Caspersen allowed two runs against the two batters she faced.

Redd finished with five RBIs in the game for UCCS. Bond threw a complete game shutout and struck out five.

Fort Hays State 5, UC-Colorado Springs 1 The Tiger bats came to life in game two against UCCS pitcher Lauren Falk. After the teams played to a scoreless tie through three innings, the Tigers scored all five of their runs during Falk's 3.1 innings of relief work.

A&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/lilly-mohr/8194">Lilly Mohr</a>&nbsp;single helped start a two-run fourth inning for the Tigers.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/paige-thexton/8200">Paige Thexton</a>&nbsp;pinch ran, stole a base, then came in to score on a&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/regan-curry/8182">Regan Curry</a>&nbsp;RBI single. A pair of wild pitches helped generate the second run. UCCS sliced the lead in half with a solo home run by Gianna Pancost in the bottom of the fourth.

In the seventh&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/lilliana-ramirez-johnson/8189">Lilliana Ramirez-Johnson</a>&nbsp;singled and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/lilly-mohr/8194">Lilly Mohr</a>&nbsp;doubled to set up a two-RBI double by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/abbey-duarte/8206">Abbey Duarte</a>.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/regan-curry/8182">Regan Curry</a>&nbsp;followed with another RBI double to make it 5-1 in favor of the Tigers.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/morgan-schmidt/8190">Morgan Schmidt</a>&nbsp;had another strong outing for the Tigers, striking out 10 batters in a complete-game effort. She allowed just four hits and walked one. Schmidt moved to 7-2 on the season with the win.

OWASSO, Okla. – Fort Hays State Men's Golf placed fifth at the Hillcat Classic held at&nbsp; Bailey Ranch Golf Club, a par-71 venue. The Tigers collectively posted rounds of 277, 289, and 300 for a three-round total of 866 (+14). Cooper Scheck&nbsp;(T-3rd) and Cole Streck&nbsp;(10th) each posted top-10 finishes individually.

The Tigers made a statement on day one with the best team round of the tournament, a 277, which was their lowest team score of the season. It was the lowest stroke total for the team since shooting the same score at the Firekeeper Open in the spring of 2024.

Leading the Tigers was Scheck, who fired an impressive 7-under par 64 in the opening round, the best individual round of the competition. Scheck finished the tournament at 2-under par, tying for third place after backing his opening round with scores of 74 and 73. He tied for the second-most birdies in the tournament with 14, including a remarkable nine birdies in the first round alone. He had a stretch of five-straight birdies in the first round and was 6-under par on the back nine in that round. He was three strokes back of the winning score of 5-under by Elliot Han-Monteremal of Rogers State. Scheck was one of five golfers to finish under par for the tournament.

Streck&nbsp;also put together a strong performance, finishing in 10th with rounds of 71 (E), 67 (-4), and 77 (+6). His second-round score of 4-under par was highlighted by five birdies and just one bogey. He had 10 birdies throughout the event.

Jackson Rader&nbsp;tied for 18th place at +6 with rounds of 69 (-2), 77 (+6), and 73 (+2). Rader had 13 birdies throughout the tournament, along with an eagle on a par-5.

Jacob George&nbsp;showed consistency early with two rounds of 73 followed by a 77 to finish in 27th place. He had 10 birdies in the tournament. Parker Krob&nbsp;finished 35th with rounds of 73, 78, and 78 and had three birdies over two days.

Jordan McCaslin&nbsp;started strong with rounds of 73 and 75, but struggled in round three to an 89. Despite a challenging final round, McCaslin had an eagle and five birdies for the tournament.

Rogers State won the event at 5-under par as a team, shooting 279, 286 and 282. The Tigers were 19 strokes back of the winning total, but just 12 strokes shy of a second-place tie.

The Tigers return to action in Blue Springs, Mo. on March 24-25 at the NSIC Conference Preview Invitational.&nbsp;&nbsp;

⛳ Scheck, Streck finish in top-10, Tigers fifth at Hillcat Classic

OWASSO, Okla. - The Fort Hays State women's golf team continued its spring season this week at the Hillcat Classic, hosted by Rogers State University at the Bailey Ranch Golf Club, a par 71, 5,700-yard course.

The Tigers finished seventh overall in the two-round tournament, posting a team score of 651. FHSU shot 325 on Monday and 326 on Tuesday.

Shayla Nordlund&nbsp;led the team with a 15th-place finish out of 46 competitors, finishing at 14-over par with rounds of 81 and 75. Avery Blasi&nbsp;followed closely behind in 19th place, finishing at 17-over par with rounds of 79 and 80.

Kiley Maier&nbsp;placed 31st with two rounds of 81. Emma Walz and Hayden York finished tied for 35th. Walz shot two rounds of 85, while York shot 84 and 86.

Nordlund finished with a team-high five birdies, tying for second most in the tournament. Blasi contributed three birdies, York and Walz each recorded two, and Maier had one.

The Tigers will be back in action next week (March 17-18) when they head to Warrensburg, Mo. for the Midwest Intercollegiate.&nbsp;&nbsp;

⛳ FHSU women seventh at Hillcat Classic

Jane Elizabeth Nutting
was born on July 19, 1955 in Hutchinson, Kansas. She was the sixth of six
children of Leo F. Massey and Neva Loretta (Belden) Massey, originally of Reno
and Rice Counties, Kansas. Jane grew up in Hays, Kansas, graduating in 1972, followed
by attendance at Fort Hays Kansas State College.

As a young woman, Jane
lived in Hill City. She married Earnest Richmeier there on June 8, 1979; they
divorced in 1991. On August 14, 1993 she married Howard Leroy (“Lee”) Nutting.
They lived in Logan, Kansas, and Jane continued working in the oil field. In
1998 she and Lee moved to an acreage near Anderson, Missouri. There she worked
for Walmart and trained as a medical transcriptionist, the work she did until
her retirement. Lee passed away in 2016. In 2018 Jane moved to WaKeeney,
Kansas, with her much loved dogs and cat.

Jane had many friends,
was devoted to her kin, kept in touch with her high school classmates, and
became an avid fan of the University of Oregon’s women’s basketball team. She
was a ‘country girl’ who worked hard and enjoyed her free time. Gregarious, she
‘never knew a stranger’. She was a reader and followed current events closely.
Unique, indeed, there will never be another Jane.

She is survived by her
stepchildren, Stephanie Lang and Marcus Nutting, six grandchildren, her sister
Kathryn and brothers Steven and Garth.

Alan
Ray Mishler, born on January 31, 1956, to John and Fern Mishler of Ransom,
Kansas passed away on March 3, 2025.&nbsp; 

Alan
grew up on the farm with his brother Bruce where their mischievous nature
began.&nbsp; He was active in school and sports, playing football and
basketball.&nbsp; He helped John on the farm and had a lot of adventures with
his brother, which were recounted in much happiness at holidays and family
gatherings.&nbsp; After high school, Alan attended Bethel College in Newton,
Kansas.&nbsp; Upon completing a year at Bethel, Alan transferred and graduated
with a degree in agriculture from Fort Hays State University.&nbsp; 

He
married Lavonne Wasinger, daughter of Nick and Wilma Wasinger.&nbsp; Together,
they had four children, Tanci, Tanner, Beau, and Brianna.&nbsp; Settling in
Ransom, Alan took over the family farm and raised crops and cattle.&nbsp;
Always the life of the party, Alan enjoyed softball, golf, dancing, playing
cards, cheering for the Kansas City Chiefs, watching NASCAR, or out on the lake
boating.&nbsp; If he wasn’t working on the weekends, you would often find him
at Cedar Bluff Lake or playing pinochle at the Wasingers.&nbsp; 

After
a divorce, Alan met and later married Susan McDonald.&nbsp; Together, they
loved cooking, boating on the lake, and traveling, especially to Jamaica where
they were married and returned every year.&nbsp; They enjoyed Branson and Table
Rock Lake and bought a home there.&nbsp; After Susan’s passing and Alan’s
retirement from the farm, Alan moved to a home right on the lake where he could
wake every morning to deer in the yard, and a beautiful view of the lake.&nbsp;


Alan
is preceded in death by his parents, John and Fern Mishler, his brother, Greg
Mishler, his son, Tanner Mishler, and his beloved wife, Susan McDonald
Mishler.&nbsp; He is survived by his children and their families, Tanci Mishler
and Miguel Restrepo, sons, Nathan and Christopher; Beau and Jessica Mishler,
sons, Dominic and Jayden; and Brianna and John Hall, daughters, Norah and
Ada.&nbsp; He is survived by his brother Bruce Mishler and family.&nbsp; Alan
will be forever in our hearts and always in our mind as we celebrate and enjoy
life as he did.&nbsp;
