High Plains Independence was able to make its payroll for August, allowing it to stay open another month while it waits for its nonprofit status to be reinstated.

The agency that provides&nbsp;support for people with severe mental illnesses in Hays has temporarily lost its funding from the Kansas Department of Aging and Disability Services because of a paperwork error.

All of the organization's services are free.

After a recent audit of the Kansas Department of Aging and Disability, which funds Consumer Run Organizations, High Plains Independence was informed it had not filed the necessary 990 forms with the IRS to maintain its nonprofit status, Ginna Anderson, High Plains Independence executive director, said.

Anderson said she is working with a new accountant to file the proper paperwork to have the group's nonprofit status reinstated and is making progress.

The group is still facing a wait of three to six months before all the paperwork can be processed.

The group received about $5,000 in donations in August to keep the organization running.

&nbsp;"I appreciate what they've done," Anderson said.

However, she said, "Now we have to start over in September."

"We are going to stay open as long as we can," Anderson said this week. ... "I refuse to give up. God did not bring us this far to drop us in the muck."

Donations can be sent to High Plains Independence at PO Box 956, Hays, KS 67601.

Mental Health support program remains open, still in limbo after paperwork error

SYLVAN – The TMP-Marian Monarchs volleyball team earned a
second-place finish Saturday at the Sylvan-Lucas tournament.

The Monarchs opened with a 3-0 record in pool play.

They defeated Lakeside (25-16, 25-18), Logan-Palco (25-11,
25-10) and Sylvan-Lucas (25-15, 27-25) to reach the championship match.

In the championship, the Monarchs fell in two sets 11-25 and
22-25.

HAYS, Kan. - David Arriaga booted four field goals and Michael Polley had a key interception return for a touchdown to help Fort Hays State to a 26-7 win over Nebraska-Kearney in front of 6,726 on Saturday night at Lewis Field.

The Tigers (2-1, 1-0 MIAA) capitalized on a strong defensive effort highlighted by a 78-yard interception return for a touchdown by Michael Polley and built a 26-0 lead before the Lopers (2-1, 0-1 MIAA) scored its touchdown late. FHSU has won seven straight at home over UNK dating back to 2005 and have won 12 of the last 13 vs. the Lopers.

After going 3-and-out on their first two possession, Fort Hays State put together a methodical 11-play, 70-yard drive, culminating in a two-yard rushing touchdown by Travis Dixon to take a 7-0 lead. The Tigers&nbsp;extended its lead to 17-0 by halftime. David Arriaga successfully converted a 42-yard field goal and added an extra point following Michael Polley's 78-yard interception return for a touchdown.

The Tigers extended its lead to 23-0 with two Arriaga field goals from 38 and 34 yards. The first field goal was set up after Parrish Terry forced a fumble on UNK's first drive of the half which was recovered by Jalen Williams. John Johnson and Kayson Dietz each had sacks in the quarter, with Dietz's stop creating a turnover on downs.

Arriaga supplied his final field goal of the night from 27 yards with 4:05 to play. to push the lead to 26-0. The Lopers drove 65 yards for their only score on an eight-yard touchdown run by Jahmez Ross.&nbsp;

The Lopers outgained the Tigers by two yards and each team had a 100-yard rusher. Travis Dixon pounded out 110 yards for the Tigers before leaving in the fourth quarter with an apparent knee injury. Isaiah Harris rushed for 107 for the Lopers.&nbsp;Caleb Heavner completed 17-of-28 passes for 134 yards. Ryan Allen led the Tigers with four receptions for 47 yards.&nbsp;

John Johnson had seven tackles and a sack to lead the Tiger defense. Jalen Williams added six tackles and a fumble recovery.&nbsp;

Fort Hays State will travel to take on another ranked team next week when it plays at Pittsburg State. The No. 24/16 ranked Gorillas knocked off No. 3/5 ranked Grand Valley State on Saturday in non-conference play. Game time is set for 4 p.m. in Pittsburg on Saturday, September 20.

The reaction followed a well-worn pattern of misinformation and conspiracy theories that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/subway-burning-misinformation-amelia-carter-c566897a3abc073c0a587188e17a7688">often come after</a>&nbsp;breaking news events when facts can be fluid. Multiple&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kolotv.com/2025/07/29/newly-released-video-shows-gsr-gunman-moments-after-shooting/">local news networks</a>&nbsp;published the footage after the Reno shooting. A subsequent request for a “moment of prayer out loud” elicited vocal objections and chaos on the House floor.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.c-span.org/program/us-house-of-representatives/house-observes-moment-of-silence-for-charlie-kirk/665499">Footage shows</a>&nbsp;members standing silently for about 30 seconds. Johnson then bangs his gavel and Rep. Lauren Boebert says that “silent prayers get silent results” before requesting that someone lead a spoken prayer as well. An audible “no” can be heard in response, among other protests. Shouting continues for about a minute, requiring Johnson to bang his gavel and state, “the House will be in order” several times. In the commotion, Johnson also says: “We will join for prayer right after this, OK?” Many posts claiming that Democrats had opposed a moment of prayer for Kirk shared clips that omitted Johnson's initial request and the ensuing silence.

THE FACTS: This is false. Robinson was named as the suspected shooter on Friday. Others, including Mallinson and Zinn, were misidentified as the shooter as authorities searched for a suspect. Mallinson is a 77-year-old Toronto resident who&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/toronto-retiree-falsely-accused-of-charlie-kirk-shooting-1.7631799">told the CBC</a>&nbsp;that he found out he had been wrongly accused after waking up from a nap and receiving a panicked call from his daughter telling him to delete his social media accounts. He said that before the shooting he had “never heard of Charlie Kirk.” Mallinson bears a resemblance to a man named George Zinn, who was filmed being dragged away handcuffed by two officers. The video spread widely on social media after the shooting. The Utah Public Safety Department&nbsp;<a href="https://mailchi.mp/utah/for-immediate-release-updates-on-charlie-kirk-shooting-at-uvu?e=98970b8875">said in a statement</a>&nbsp;that it “initially took in George Zinn as a suspect,” but that he was later released and charged with obstruction. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Food and Drug Administration announced sweeping reforms to rein in misleading direct-to-consumer pharmaceutical advertisements.

The FDA is sending thousands of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fda.gov/media/188616/download?attachment">letters</a>&nbsp;warning pharmaceutical companies to remove misleading ads and issuing approximately 100 cease-and-desist letters to companies with deceptive ads.&nbsp;In addition to enforcing existing law, the FDA is initiating rulemaking to close the “adequate provision” loophole created in 1997, which drug companies have used to conceal critical safety risks in broadcast and digital ads, fueling inappropriate drug use and eroding public trust.&nbsp;“Pharmaceutical ads hooked this country on prescription drugs,”&nbsp;

Kennedy, Jr. said.&nbsp;“We will shut down that pipeline of deception and require drug companies to disclose all critical safety facts in their advertising. Only radical transparency will break the cycle of overmedicalization that drives America’s chronic disease epidemic.”The FDA is concerned patients are not seeing a fair balance of information about drug products. This concern is magnified when serious risks are not clearly presented, or the information is too difficult for seniors to read or hear.&nbsp;

Those billions of dollars would be better spent on lowering drug prices for everyday Americans.”

Americans also live in a new era of social media. An increasing reliance on digital and social media channels, including undisclosed paid influencer promotion, has blurred the lines among editorial content, user-generated media and pharmaceutical advertising, making it increasingly difficult for patients to distinguish between evidence-based information and promotional material.&nbsp;

A 2024 review in the Journal of Pharmaceutical Health Services Research reveals that while 100% of pharmaceutical social media posts highlight drug benefits, only 33% mention potential harms. Moreover, 88% of advertisements for top-selling drugs are posted by individuals and organizations that fail to adhere to the FDA fair balance guidelines.

The stakes surrounding prescription drug ads are high. While these ads can raise awareness of disease states and beneficial therapies, they must also disclose important risks and limitations. Current law requires that advertisements present a fair balance between a product’s risks and benefits; avoid exaggerating benefits; not create a misleading overall impression; properly disclose financial relationships; and include information regarding major side effects and contraindications.&nbsp;

Despite widespread violations, the FDA has been increasingly lax and reactive in its enforcement approach over the last few decades. The FDA used to send more than a hundred warning letters each year, and misleading ads were rare. But over time, enforcement waned and the number of warning letters sent to pharmaceutical companies dropped to one in 2023 and zero in 2024.

The FDA will no longer tolerate such deceptive practices. Going forward, the agency will aggressively deploy its available enforcement tools. The FDA is already implementing AI and other tech-enabled tools to proactively surveil and review drug ads.

The Trump Administration and HHS Secretary Kennedy are committed to restoring transparency, accountability, and trust in health care. By closing loopholes and stepping up enforcement, the FDA will protect patients, safeguard public health and hold the pharmaceutical industry accountable.

PHILLIPSBURG - Smith Center leaned on defense, a timely passing strike, and an 18-play clock-draining drive in the fourth quarter to grind out a 16-14 victory over Phillipsburg Friday night in a Mid-Continent League rivalry matchup.

The Redmen (2-0) built an early lead and survived a second-half push from the Panthers (1-1), who were playing with senior quarterback Colin Springer back under center after missing Week 1.

Smith Center struck first in unusual fashion. After forcing a three-and-out, a high snap on Phillipsburg's punt sailed into the end zone, where Brady Desbien fell on it for a touchdown. The two-point conversion made it 8-0 with 2:45 left in the first quarter.

The Redmen wasted no time adding on. Early in the second quarter, quarterback Parker Hutchinson connected with Cole McKelvey on a 67-yard scoring pass, stretching the lead to 16-0.

Phillipsburg answered before halftime. Springer broke free on a designed run for a 28-yard touchdown, then added the conversion to cut it to 16-8. After a Hutchinson fumble, the Panthers drove into the red zone late in the half behind two completions to Cleveland Corman, but a sack from Smith Center linebacker Isaiah Haack stalled the drive.

In the second half, both teams leaned entirely on the run game. Phillipsburg's 12-play 64-yard march was capped by Springer's second rushing touchdown, a 7-yarder that made it 16-14 with 10:46 left. But the two-point try was stuffed by the Redmen defense, proving to be the difference.&nbsp;

From there, Smith Center never gave the ball back. Starting from their own 18, the Redmen methodically chewed up the final 10:46 on an 18-play drive, converting twice on third down and twice more on fourth down to seal the win. Neither team attempted a pass in the second half.

Hutchinson finished 2 of 3 passing for 76 yards and a touchdown while rushing 11 times for 46 yards. Riley Griffin Powers added 57 yards on 10 carries, and Brant Wilson chipped in 52 yards on 15 attempts.

For Phillipsburg, Springer accounted for both scores, rushing 11 times for 58 yards and completing 3 of 6 passes for 67 yards. Caleb Leidig added 40 yards on 13 carries, and Corman caught two passes for 49 yards.

The victory marked Smith Center's first over Phillipsburg since 2023 giving head coach Mike Rogers a 2-1 lead in his head-to-head series against Ross Coomes.

Both teams continue MCL play next week as Smith Center looks to stay unbeaten vs Norton. While Phillipsburg aims to bounce back at TMP.

Astra Bank relocated from downtown Hays to a newly built location to better serve its customers.&nbsp;

The Chamber in Hays held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday to celebrate the opening with Jason Kennedy, Astra Bank market president, and the CEO of Astra Bank, Kyle Campbell.

"We truly believe as a family-owned community bank that we should invest in the community because we're never going to be more successful than the communities we serve," Campbell said.&nbsp;

Astra Bank’s new location, 2605 Main St., features better accessibility, wider drive-through lanes and increased personal interaction with customers. Kennedy said the relocation idea began during a casual conversation with Doug Williams, executive director of Grow Hays, and the city.

"It was kind of off-handed when the city was looking at the police station. I said 'Why don't you guys buy my building? Let's do a swap and we'll develop on that lot," Kennedy said.

Kennedy said the relocation arrangement saved the city taxpayers' money. The former Astra Bank building at 1100 Fort will be repurposed as a new police and municipal court facility.

Kennedy emphasized that the bank serves as a commercial and community bank, supporting agriculture, local businesses and civic projects.

"Anything you can find at any other bank, we do here as well. We just do it better," Kennedy said.

The bank opened its new location on Aug. 18. To celebrate, Astra Bank is offering a 10% three-month CD, limited to one per household, available from Sept. 12 to 19 for the first 100 households.

Kennedy said Astra Bank kept operations running without interruption during the move, continuing to serve customers.

"My staff was not just patient. They were phenomenal," he said.

The bank lobby is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the drive-through is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Astra Bank celebrates new home in Hays, saving taxpayer dollars

HAYS - Hays High opened up their new field with the high profile Choctaw Yellowjackets out of Oklahoma. The inaugural game was one to remember as the Indians walked off the field with a 21-19 victory.&nbsp;

Holden Lind scored the first points at the new Hays High school on a 59 yard run with 4:07 left in the first quarter. The first point after touchdown attempt was put through the uprights by Carson Moore for a 7-0 score.

The Yellowjackets needed just three plays on their next drive to score. A pair of screen plays ate up 74 yards to draw Choctaw within a single point. Jarek Purdy broke up a pass in the end zone on a two point conversion attempt that kept the lead in the hands of Hays at 7-6 with 3:11 to go in the first.

The Indian defense stiffened for the remaining of the half. Defensive tackle Tanner Geist intercepted a bobbled screen pass. Hays started the last two possessions of the first half in Choctaw territory but came up empty. The final drive started at the Yellowjacket 35 yard line following a negative one yard punt.

A pair of pass interference calls put Hays at the eight. Their final play of the half came up two yards short of the end zone as time expired.

Jace Myers recovered a Choctaw fumble to begin the second half. The offense turned that into points. Eight plays after the fumble, quarterback Zane Viegra stretched his 6'2' frame into the end zone on fourth and inches. Moore's extra point increased the lead to 14-6 with 7:14 left in the third quarter.

A quick three and out forced by the Hays defense put the offense back into motion. Holden Lind capped a 13 play drive with a one yard rushing score. Moore's extra point put the Indians up 21-6 with 10:54 left in the game.

Things nearly got away from Hays. Choctaw scored on a seven yard run to close the gap to 21-12 after another failed two-point conversion attempt with 6:56 left. Two Hays High players ran into each other on the onside kick allowing the Yellowjackets to get the ball back. Twenty-four seconds later Choctaw scored on a 32 yard pass. This time they elected to kick an extra point for a 21-19 game with 6:32 left.

The Indians fumbled the ball two plays later on offense. Choctaw advanced to six yard line before being forced back to the 22 yard line for fourth down. A pass fell incomplete in the end zone allowing Hays to run out the clock for the 21-19 victory.

Hays (2-0) will take on their third straight number ranked 6A team when they travel to Manhattan. Choctaw (1-1) travels to Bixby for their third straight road game to open the season.

NORTON – It had been more than a decade since the TMP-Marian
Monarchs defeated the Norton BlueJays on the gridiron, and they had never beaten
them on their home field, but that all came to an end Friday night thanks to
several big plays and an opportunistic defense as the Monarchs pick up the 55-6 victory.

Norton (0-2, 0-2 MCL) opened the game with the football, and
on their first offensive play, they fumbled a handoff and TMP recovered the
ball at the BlueJays' 17-yard line.

The Monarchs (1-1, 1-1 MCL) wasted no time taking advantage
of the Norton miscue, scoring on a Jackson Gillespie 17-yard touchdown run for
a 7-0 lead, just 16 seconds into the game. 

After each team punted the football on their next possession,
a good punt by TMP’s Carson Liles pinned Norton inside their 20-yard line.
Three plays later, Jacob Seib intercepted a Norton pass and returned it 16
yards for the pick-6, with the extra point giving the Monarchs a 14-point lead with
six minutes left in the first quarter.

Following another Norton punt, the Monarchs went to the air
as Carson Liles found Isaac Purinton for a 54-yard touchdown pass, making it 21-0
TMP with just under one minute and 27 seconds left in the first quarter.

Down three scores, Norton answered with their best drive of
the game, driving inside the TMP 15-yard line. Still, it went from bad to worse
for the BlueJays when Norton quarterback Ashton Kats was intercepted for the
second time in the first half. TMP’s Grant Nehls returned the interception 100
yards for the score, putting TMP up 28-0 after the extra point with just under
11 minutes left in the second quarter.

Norton broke onto the scoreboard with just over eight and a
half minutes left in the first half on a 54-yard touchdown pass for a 28-6 TMP
lead.

TMP converted on another scoring drive a little more than
four minutes later when Liles found Seib for a 14-yard touchdown pass, putting
TMP up 34-6 after the failed extra point.

That would be the halftime score in favor of the Monarchs.

TMP opened possession of the ball in the third quarter, but
they weren’t able to do anything with it. But just like in the first half,
Norton fumbled right back to TMP, their fourth turnover of the game, giving TMP
possession at the Norton 38-yard line.

The Monarchs were facing a third down and long when Liles
found Nehls for a 26-yard sliding over-the-shoulder catch that set up a six-yard
touchdown run by Liles, putting TMP up 41-6 with six and a half minutes left in
the third quarter.

The Monarchs added two more rushing touchdowns by Gillespie,
each from a yard out, capping his three-touchdown day as the Monarchs secured
the 55-6 victory.

The victory for TMP marks the first win over Norton since
2011, ending a 10-game losing streak and their first win at Norton.

The Monarchs will host the Phillipsburg Panther for homecoming
next week.

FORD COUNTY —Law enforcement agencies have cleared the downtown Dodge City area and confirmed there are no safety concerns after a reported bomb threat Friday afternoon.

The section of downtown near the Post Office including the Ford County Courthouse and the Ford County Government Center are now safe and open to the community.

 The City of Dodge City thanked the community for its patience and extends appreciation to everyone involved for their efforts during this situation.

Police reported no injuries or addditional details.

In line with new state mandates, Fort Hays State University is dismantling Diversity, Equity and Inclusion practices.

Those changes have affected funding for some student groups, dictated what types of events those groups can host, and forced them to scrub key language from their mission statements.&nbsp;

<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/briefs/dei-barred-in-kansas-government-universities-beginning-aug-1/">According to the Kansas Reflector</a>, state lawmakers effectively ended DEI practices in state government and universities with Aug. 1 as the compliance deadline.

Kansas Secretary of Administration, Adam Proffitt, confirmed that all DEI-related positions, programs, trainings, grants and contracts were eliminated.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-dei-schools-lawsuit-ruling-education-department-4c1dbb5f7b3997ba78c17b25a935fb3f">The Associated Press reported on Aug. 14</a> that a federal judge in Maryland struck down two Trump administration Education Department memos that threatened schools and universities with the loss of federal funding if they continued DEI programs.

U.S. District Judge Stephanie Gallagher ruled that the Education Department violated the law when it tried to impose sweeping anti-DEI restrictions without proper rulemaking.

Scott Cason, FHSU's chief communications officer, provided the following statement:

"Fort Hays State University has taken the necessary steps to ensure we fully comply with federal and state law and the guidance we received from the Kansas Board of Regents in this area," he said.

Cason provided a <a href="https://www.k-state.edu/2025-federal-transition/DEI%20Guidance%20For%20State%20Universities%20in%20Kansas%206.18.2025.pdf">document from the Board of Regents</a>, which provides guidance for state universities to comply with the <a href="https://kslegislature.gov/li/b2025_26/measures/documents/sb125_enrolled.pdf">2025 Senate Bill 125</a>. This bill mandates the elimination of positions, programs and policies related to DEI across state agencies.

The guidance also emphasized that federal and state antidiscrimination laws, academic freedom, research, curricula and programs open to all students are not restricted.

Julie Grabbe, FHSU's legal counsel and university culture strategist, said the university has been eliminating state-funded activities related to DEI.

"We're doing an entire audit. We're looking at everything because the law is very broad in general," she said. "There's a lot of confusion about the law... the legislature didn't define diversity [in Senate Bill 125]."

The guidance provided by the board of regents also states that the bill does not define what DEI is. Grabbe said, despite the changes, student organizations were already open to anyone interested in joining.

"We are working hard to keep the university compliant, while at the same time recognizing that we want our students to feel like they belong here," she said.

Star Parham, president of the FHSU Black Student Union, said her group was required to remove DEI terminology from its bylaws and event descriptions.

"We were going to have a guest speaker this past year, but that was during the heat of pushing back and getting rid of DEI. That speaker was no longer able to come out of fear that our funds that we were receiving at that time would not be able to be used for that exact event," Parham said.

Despite these obstacles, Parham said she remains committed to its mission and finding strength in adversity. Upcoming events for the student group include a Black History Month banquet in February, which could still face uncertainty.

Genisis Wilson, vice president of the Black Student Union, said DEI restrictions have affected student groups as funding and approvals now hinge on avoiding DEI language.

Wilson said events and posters have needed to be reworded, and the group of about 15 to 25 is discussing potentially making significant changes to how they present themselves and where they meet.

"Black Student Union is very concerned that we're going to have to A: change the meaning of our club or B: move off of campus," she said.

Wilson said the club has always been inclusive from the start, as a diverse group of active members is involved in celebrating Black culture and excellence. However, it now needs to reframe that messaging and advertise itself as open to everyone.

"We have to stop talking about DEI, but we're the Black Student Union, and that's what our biggest point of contention is. How are we supposed to take all this wording out when this is what we are and what we do?" she said.

Parham said DEI creates environments where students of all backgrounds feel welcome and protected, and, no matter what, there will always be something for everyone at FHSU.

"As a student at Fort Hays, I have felt both supported and like I was in the midst of what's going on. As time goes on, things may get harder, but there's plenty of student organizations on campus that are gonna keep fighting," she said.

FHSU Student Government Association and funding

Wilson said the annual hair care event workshop, hosted by the Black Student Union, received no funding for the first time, as it was marked as "personal gain" despite its broader benefits.

"They didn't think it was inclusive enough for everyone because it's curly hair-focused. We talk about protective hairstyles for Black people... But in reality, our prizes we give out work for a lot of different hair types, and non-Black people have curly hair," she said.

The FHSU Student Government Association serves as the representative body for students, advocating on their behalf to the administration, the Kansas Legislature and the Board of Regents.

Student senators manage funding sources that support student-led projects and opportunities on campus.

Jackson Sinsel, FHSU Student Government Association president, said that state funds cannot be used for items considered "personal gain," such as T-shirts, giveaways, or prizes, a rule applied consistently to student groups.

"Student Government Association has no issue with these events, but cannot fund these products with state funds," Sinsel said. "Similar expenses and requests were cut from 65 other groups on campus."

Sinsel said that the student association has partnered with several campus organizations in past events, including the Black Student Union. He added that all groups are welcome to submit funding requests.

Wilson said that although campus faculty support DEI initiatives, the support feels insufficient without funding and actions. The Black Student Union has partnered with other student organizations through events.

The Black Student Union has partnered with other student organizations through events.In March, Wilson gave a presentation through the FHSU's American Democracy Project, a nonpartisan group, highlighting the need for DEI initiatives in various institutions, including education, the workforce and the everyday lives of minorities.<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/2e29344e-ecd4-42dd-a874-759be9154b12">SEE RELATED STORY: FHSU hosts presentation on importance of DEI</a>Wilson also said the university has removed a DEI webpage that listed student organizations and resources.<h2>FHSU Hispanic American Leadership Organization</h2>Karina Vargas, Hispanic American Leadership Organization president, says the group has updated its mission statement and communications to avoid restricted DEI terminology.The student-led organization is a group dedicated to supporting the Hispanic community at FHSU and the local area, participating in civic events, and serving as a support system for those with Latin backgrounds.&nbsp;"We are not allowed to use some words. For example, diversity, we couldn't include that in our mission statement," Vargas said.She said the group's old mission statement referenced diversity but now emphasizes inclusivity for all."We do promote awareness of our culture and heritage, but we couldn't put [we pledge to increase diversity]," she said. "It's kind of a red flag."Vargas said members in her group were shocked and discouraged when the DEI restrictions began to roll in, not expecting them to affect them as directly as they did, but she added there were no funding cuts to the organization.The group consists of about 30 to 40 members. Vargas said DEI matters to her because it helps minorities and first-generation students feel welcome and supported in predominantly white higher-education spaces."Even with these new policies, we're gonna do our best to make students feel included and make their voices feel heard," she said.Vargas said&nbsp;despite the changes,&nbsp;she still feels supported by the school, as each group has its own&nbsp;adviser."I feel like Fort Hays does a really good job with such a broad and diverse group of students on campus. It's their job to make students feel welcomed and connected," Vargas said.<h2>FHSU Gender &amp; Sexuality Alliance</h2>The guidance from the Board of Regents also included the removal of gender pronouns or gender ideology from employee email signatures and communications.The FHSU Gender &amp; Sexuality Alliance President, who asked her name not be used because of safety reasons, declined to comment on the board’s pronoun guidance but said the group has been affected in multiple ways by the DEI changes."Funding has been a challenge in the past when it comes to things that we as a club need," she said.The president said a lavender graduation, a university ceremony honoring the academic achievements and contributions of graduating LGBTQIA+ students, was one event that had to be modified.The president said the event’s flyer had to undergo numerous changes, ultimately stripping the ceremony of its intended purpose.&nbsp;The flyer was shared on the group’s social media, but without its usual rainbow that symbolizes LGBTQ+ pride.&nbsp;"There is a sense of worry since there is not much certainty when it comes to the future of our club on campus. Not only for our club but also the individuals that make campus their home," the president said.The 22-member group has sought support from other campus organizations that may also be affected. The president noted the situation is not FHSU’s fault, but rather stems from the current political climate and the restrictions the university must follow to continue educating future generations.The president added even before the recent DEI-related changes, the university had already experienced shifts, such as the removal of signs outside teacher offices that once indicated specialized training and identified the space as supportive for students, including those who identify as LGBTQ+."DEI is important at the university level because it helps promote collaboration between different people and helps form a community for students," the president said. "It helps form bonds between students, staff and even community members that will last years."
