Russell County 4-H&nbsp;Development Fund

RUSSELL — The Russell County 4-H Development Fund, an organization whose mission is to support 4-H programs, 4-H members, and 4-H alumni, met on April 23, 2025 and awarded four area high school graduates each a $1000 scholarship toward their tuition at the college they plan to attend.

• Russell High School graduating senior recipient Teagan Pfeifer plans to attend Pittsburg State University in the Automotive Technology program. • • Hays High/Westview graduate Christian Miller is attending Barton Community College in the Business program. • Russell High School graduate Kelvie Reeves is attending Fort Hays State University in the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program. • Russell High School graduate Hailey Gier is attending Kansas State University in the Milling Science and Management program.

These very deserving recipients, along with other active 4-H members who have received event scholarships during this 4-H year, have worked hard in their 4-H, scholastic, and personal endeavors, and are continuing their education to make the best better. The Board congratulates them on their achievements and is proud to support them in their journey.

Without the generosity of our donors, these scholarships and the ability to pay all Russell County 4-H members’ annual enrollment fees, would not be possible. We are grateful to all who help support 4-H youth.

Members of FHSU’s Delta Tau Omega Chapter of the Criminal Justice Club attended the 2025 national conference of the American Criminal Justice Association (ACJA) March 30-April 4 in Long Beach, Calif. The conference, themed around human trafficking, offered students and faculty a variety of workshops, educational sessions, and professional development opportunities. 

Midwestern states comprised a significant portion of attendees at the conference, with Universities from Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska sending students and faculty to participate.

“The National Conference of ACJA provides students with opportunities to network with current and future professionals in criminal justice systems across the U.S. and to learn how agencies in different parts of the country handle a wide array of problems,” said Dr. Morgan Steele, Region 3 President of ACJA and FHSU assistant professor of criminal justice. “The Universities from the Midwest are traditionally among the highest-performing groups within the National conference each year, which is reflected in the number of individual and team awards and scholarships won at the conference.”

Throughout the week, attendees participated in sessions focused on key topics such as prosecutorial perspectives on investigations, effective report writing, managing critical incidents, and the investigation of sex crimes.

FHSU students and faculty competed in a variety of events, including academic testing, crime scene investigation, firearms, physical agility, and academic research poster presentations. Winners of scholarship awards and national paper competitions were also announced during the conference.

Beyond the conference programming, club members and faculty volunteered at The Midnight Mission, a historic organization founded in 1914 that provides shelter, hot meals, educational services, and resources to individuals experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles’ Skid Row community.

"Volunteering at The Midnight Mission was a humbling experience for our students," said Dr. Tamara Lynn, chair and professor of criminal justice and faculty advisor. "It reinforced the importance of service in the field of criminal justice and made a lasting impact on all of us."

The conference concluded with an awards ceremony recognizing top finishers across four competition divisions: lower division (freshman and sophomore), upper division (junior and senior), graduate division, and professional division.

Other students who attended the conference included Morgan Drake, Parker, Colo., Kylie Huelsmann, Oakley, and Xitlaly Marino, Hays.

Reflecting on the students’ accomplishments, Dr. Lynn noted, "Our students demonstrated exceptional dedication, professionalism, and teamwork throughout the conference. I could not be prouder of how they represented our program and university on the national stage."

Club members are already planning for next year’s ACJA National Conference, which will be held in Bloomington, Minn.

FHSU criminal justice students compete at national conference

You are probably asking yourself, “What is QPR?” QPR stands for Question, Persuade and Refer. They are three steps anyone can learn to help prevent suicide. 

QPR is a suicide-prevention training designed to educate people from all walks of life on how to recognize the warning signs of suicide. QPR training helps people get comfortable asking the question "Are you thinking about suicide?" and then helping others get appropriate help. QPR is for anyone interested in helping someone who has thoughts of suicide.

Together with the Kansas Suicide Prevention Coalition, Monique and Alicia plan to host a QPR training May 30, 2025.

The QPR mission is to reduce suicidal behaviors and save lives by providing innovative, practical and proven suicide prevention training. The signs of crisis are all around us. We believe that quality education empowers all people, regardless of their background to make a positive difference in the life of someone they know.

K-State Research and Extension is committed to helping the mental health crisis in Kansas by creating the Stress and Resiliency Transdisciplinary team. Our Stress and Resiliency team provides educational information about stress, stress management and resiliency, or one’s ability&nbsp;to adapt positively to difficult experiences. 

Areas of focus include all types of stress and general mental health information, because stress impacts all of us – regardless of demographic.

Increasing awareness and people’s willingness to talk about mental health will encourage more Kansans to get the help they need. 

Another goal is to equip Kansans with tools and techniques that help them recognize and manage stress within their lives, families and communities. Our team also strives to educate Kansans about resiliency - how to enhance it and how to incorporate it into their daily lives.

In addition to the above training, we are available to present QPR to a wide variety of audiences. Some examples would include workplaces, schools, colleges and universities, faith communities, emergency departments and services, and other civic organizations that are interested in learning more about the mental health crisis and suicide prevention.

HOISINGTON
– The TMP-Marian Monarchs softball team split with Hoisington to close out
their regular season Monday. The Cardinals scored five in the sixth and won the
opener 9-5 but the Monarchs responded and took game two 10-3.

TMP-Marian
closed out the regular season 24-2. The seedings and bracket for next week’s
2-1A regional hosted by Spearville will be released Wednesday.

Game 1: Hoisington 9. TMP-Marian 5
The Monarchs held a 5-4 lead after five but the Cardinals scored five in the bottom
of the sixth to rally for the win.

Brooke
Koeningsman hit a two-run homer in the top of the first to give TMP the early
lead. After Hoisington scored three in the bottom of the inning, the Monarchs
tied it with a run in the third on a Paige Koeningsman groundout.

The
Monarchs scored two in the fifth to retake the lead. Bria Windholz tied the
game with a single to center then scored the go-ahead run on an A Watson double
to left.

Hoisington
took advantage of three walks, two errors and a bases loaded triple in their
five-run sixth. The triple was the only hit of the inning.

Brynn
Rebel allowed all nine runs, only two of which were earned, on six hits with seven
strikeouts and six walks over 5 1/3 innings and took the loss. Piper Simpson
recorded the final two outs of the sixth.

TMP
was held to only three hits and struck out seven times at the plate.

Game 2: TMP-Marian 10, Hoisington 3
Just like in game one, the Monarchs struck early with two runs in the first.
They added three in the second, then single runs in the third, fourth and fifth.
Then added two more in the seventh.

The
Monarchs scored their first run on an error then a Bria Windholz single. Addison
Watson scored on a passed ball then Brynn Rebel hit a two-run homer to put them
up 5-1 in the second.

The
Monarchs scored single runs over the next three innings on RBI singles from Watson,
Paige Koeningsman and Nicole Schumacher.

An
error and a Hannah Rose sacrifice fly accounted for the final two runs in the
seventh.

Beginning today, 12th Street will be closed from Main Street to Oak Street for road and utility repairs. Work is anticipated to be completed by Friday, May 16, weather permitting.

Connie Lynn (Fletcher) Powell was born on December 31, 1948
in Akron, Colorado. She died May 9, 2025, in Wichita, Kansas. Born to AJ and
Betty Jean (Hayes) Fletcher, Connie was raised on the family homestead southwest
of Akron, Colorado.

Connie graduated from Akron High School and attended Kansas
Wesleyan University in Salina, Kansas, where she met, and fell in love with, Denny
Powell. They married in 1968 and had two children, Debbie and Todd.

Connie began her career as a high school home economics
teacher in Salina, Kansas and Goodland, Kansas where she was also a real estate
agent. She later furthered her education, earning a Master’s Degree in Early
Childhood Special Education from Fort Hays State University. She was a
classroom teacher in Norton, Kansas and Wichita, Kansas and also served as a
district administrator, retiring from USD 259 (Wichita Public School District)
as the Director of Early Childhood Special Education.

Connie was passionate about the outdoors and was always up
for an adventure. From riding horses to water and snow skiing to cruising the
country in the Corvette she embraced every opportunity to celebrate life. Connie
spent many years riding shotgun as Denny’s navigator in SORC (Sandhills Open
Road Challenge) in Arnold, Nebraska. Connie and Denny made many lifelong
friends with whom they shared these travels down life’s highway.

Connie’s skills and interests were varied. She was an expert
seamstress and award-winning quilter, she played the dulcimer, learned how to
Western Dance, loved to sing and was an avid reader, consistently setting an
example for her children and grandchildren, demonstrating the value of
education and the importance of continuous learning. One of her greatest joys
was reading to her grandchildren, all of whom cherish the fond memories of
those special moments.

Connie was preceded in death by her parents AJ and Betty Jean
and brother Cliff Fletcher. She is survived by: Her husband of 57 years, Denny,
Wichita, Kansas;&nbsp; Her children, Debbie
Beam (Jared), Topeka, Kansas and Todd Powell (Trina), Hays, Kansas; Her grandchildren,
Stephanie Bender (Trae Johnson); Thomas Bender III (Reagan White); Teghan Beam;
Evan Powell; Eli Powell; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Connie was diagnosed in 2021 with frontotemporal dementia,
which affects speech, mobility and executive function. Despite her diagnosis,
she continued to visit family and friends and won the hearts of her caregivers
with her kindness and quiet dignity, core qualities that the disease could
never hide.

Connie’s family will be forever grateful to her caregivers.

in Akron, Colorado. She died May 9, 2025, in Wichita, Kansas. Born to AJ and
Betty Jean (Hayes) Fletcher, Connie was raised on the family homestead southwest
of Akron, Colorado.Connie graduated from Akron High School and attended Kansas
Wesleyan University in Salina, Kansas, where she met, and fell in love with, Denny
Powell. They married in 1968 and had two children, Debbie and Todd.Connie began her career as a high school home economics
teacher in Salina, Kansas and Goodland, Kansas where she was also a real estate
agent. She later furthered her education, earning a Master’s Degree in Early
Childhood Special Education from Fort Hays State University. She was a
classroom teacher in Norton, Kansas and Wichita, Kansas and also served as a
district administrator, retiring from USD 259 (Wichita Public School District)
as the Director of Early Childhood Special Education.Connie was passionate about the outdoors and was always up
for an adventure. From riding horses to water and snow skiing to cruising the
country in the Corvette she embraced every opportunity to celebrate life. Connie
spent many years riding shotgun as Denny’s navigator in SORC (Sandhills Open
Road Challenge) in Arnold, Nebraska. Connie and Denny made many lifelong
friends with whom they shared these travels down life’s highway.Connie’s skills and interests were varied. She was an expert
seamstress and award-winning quilter, she played the dulcimer, learned how to
Western Dance, loved to sing and was an avid reader, consistently setting an
example for her children and grandchildren, demonstrating the value of
education and the importance of continuous learning. One of her greatest joys
was reading to her grandchildren, all of whom cherish the fond memories of
those special moments.Connie was preceded in death by her parents AJ and Betty Jean
and brother Cliff Fletcher. She is survived by: Her husband of 57 years, Denny,
Wichita, Kansas;&nbsp; Her children, Debbie
Beam (Jared), Topeka, Kansas and Todd Powell (Trina), Hays, Kansas; Her grandchildren,
Stephanie Bender (Trae Johnson); Thomas Bender III (Reagan White); Teghan Beam;
Evan Powell; Eli Powell; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.Connie was diagnosed in 2021 with frontotemporal dementia,
which affects speech, mobility and executive function. Despite her diagnosis,
she continued to visit family and friends and won the hearts of her caregivers
with her kindness and quiet dignity, core qualities that the disease could

Seven seniors from Fort Hays State University’s Department of Applied Business Studies were recently honored as outstanding students for 2025.

The department houses three different programs with various concentrations. The Outstanding Student Award recognizes a graduating senior who has demonstrated exceptional performance in academics, leadership, and overall excellence in the respective program at FHSU. The student is a role model who positively characterizes the core values of the awarding program. The awards are given annually to both on-campus and online students.

Hays senior honored in Applied Business Studies at Fort Hays State University 

Frank Charles Stochl, a
dedicated family man and a beacon of joy, departed this world on Saturday, May
10, 2025, at his home in St. Peters, Missouri, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on July 24, 1945, to
Joseph and Clara Stochl, and lived a life marked by laughter, generosity, and
an unwavering spirit.&nbsp; He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, June
Stochl, with whom he shared an enduring marriage of 61 years.

Frank’s warmth and humor were
unmatched.&nbsp; He was known for his hilarious personality and his infectious
smile, and those who knew him will forever cherish the sound of his
laughter.&nbsp; He took immense pride in celebrating the accomplishments of his
loved ones, often bragging with joy about his grandchildren, who brought him
endless happiness and pride.

Frank's interests and hobbies
reflected his vibrant personality.&nbsp; &nbsp;He loved the outdoors, spending
countless hours in his garden, nurturing both his flowers and his love for
nature. He was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and cherished watching
boxing matches.&nbsp; However, perhaps one of his most endearing passions was
his love for birds; he delighted in feeding them and would always go out of his
way to buy the finest birdseed, ensuring his feathered friends were well taken
care of.

Frank's compassionate nature
extended beyond his family.&nbsp; He was known to give generously, engaging in
charitable donations and making a positive impact in his community.&nbsp; His
kindness was exemplified by the stacks of mail he received from various
charities, each letter read thoughtfully as a reflection of his generous heart.

He is survived by his loving
family, who will hold onto the cherished memories of Frank, from his uproarious
jokes to his thoughtful guidance.&nbsp; Frank's dedication to his family
extended

to his wife, June Stochl; his
sons, Michael (Linda) Stochl; Kenneth (Amanda) Stochl; and Timothy (Kristy
Forcucci) Stochl.&nbsp; Together, they formed a tight-knit family that served
as the foundation of his life.&nbsp; As a grandfather, Frank's love knew no
bounds.&nbsp; He found immense joy in playing with his grandchildren, Michael
(Sophia) Stochl; Nataliah Stochl; Zoee Stochl; Alexander Stochl; Christopher
Stochl; Thomas Stochl; Jacob Stochl; and Julia Stochl.&nbsp; His legacy
continues with his great-grandchildren, Grayson Stochl; Jose "JT"
Stochl; Bodhi Stochl; and Noah Stochl; all of whom were fortunate to know the
loving spirit of their Great-Grandpa.

They find solace in the
knowledge that he now rests with his loving parents, Joseph and Clara Stochl;
his brother, Joseph Stochl; and his sister, Clara Busby; who welcomed him into
a peaceful embrace.

Frank Charles Stochl was truly a
remarkable soul whose laughter will echo in our hearts forever.&nbsp; His
memory will live on through the love he shared, the kindness he exemplified,
and the family he cherished.&nbsp; While he may have departed this earthly
realm, he will never leave our hearts. Services were held at Newcomer Funeral
Home in St. Peters, Missouri.

A Mass of Christian burial will
be at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, May 17, 2025, at The Basilica of Saint Fidelis, 900

Paul O. Schippers age 88, of
Victoria, Kansas, passed away on Friday, May 9, 2025, at Hays Medical Center.

He was born January 26, 1937, to John M. and Anna C. (Kippes) Schippers.&nbsp;
He married Theresa M. (Pfannenstiel) on October 22, 1962, in Hays,
Kansas.&nbsp; She preceded him in death on June 15, 2012.&nbsp; 

Paul spent his lifetime as a
farmer, stockman, and custom harvester.&nbsp; He grew up in Victoria and was a
1955 graduate of Victoria High School.&nbsp;
He was a member of The Basilica of Saint Fidelis and the 3rd Degree
Knights of Columbus, Victoria.

He served on the St. Fidelis
Parish Council, as a board member for the Victoria Farmers CO-OP Grocery Store,
as a councilman for the City of Victoria, and as a board member for the Farm
Service Agency.&nbsp; He enjoyed watching sports and his grandchildren’s games
and activities.

Paul is survived by his
children, Paula Schumacher, Topeka, KS; Troy Schippers and wife, Geralyn,
Victoria, KS; his grandchildren, Wade Schumacher (Ashley Wunder); Wyatt
Schumacher; Sara Weber (Grant); Emily Lang (Ethan); Gracyn Schippers; Claire

Say hello to Jessie Groff, the incoming assistant principal of Roosevelt Elementary School for the upcoming school year.

Groff is a former Roosevelt student who graduated from Hays High School in 2007 and went on to receive multiple master's degrees.

"I actually went to Roosevelt as an elementary student. It's kind of cool that I get to come back and be a leader here at the school," Groff said.

In 2010, Groff graduated from Fort Hays State University with a bachelor's degree in elementary education. She then worked as a first-grade teacher at Wilson Elementary for 14 years.&nbsp;

She eventually transitioned to Roosevelt Elementary in a student support role, handling a variety of responsibilities, including reading intervention and behavior support.

She will officially begin as assistant principal on July 1 and looks forward to working alongside families, especially children.

"I'm excited to work and get to know all the students in our building... to be able to create those relationships with them," Groff said.

Groff said she went into education to make a difference in kids' lives and shifted toward administration to help effect broader changes in the school.

"I wanted to be able to not only stand up for my colleagues, but share ideas that could be at the table that's making changes for the district," she said.

Her top goals for her first year as assistant principal are to build trusting relationships, support students' academic and emotional growth, and enhance the school climate by promoting inclusion and equity.

"A positive school culture is one where every member of the community, students, staff and families feel valued," Groff said.

Hays welcomes new Roosevelt Elementary School assistant principal

BELOIT — After serving as an educator, mentor, and builder for almost three decades, Mike Cheney, Construction Technology instructor for Fort Hays Tech | North Central, is retiring.

Cheney, graduated from the Construction Technology program in 1979, after working in the industry he returned to the college in 1998. He was hired as only the second lead instructor in the program’s history, replacing his former instructor and mentor, John Lackey. Since then, Mike has been a cornerstone of the program sharing his knowledge of construction, as well as his passion for the trade and commitment to student success.

“The continuity of the program and the quality homes it has produced has been incredible,” said Fort Hays Tech | North Central President, Eric Burks. “To have only two lead instructors over sixty years is remarkable. I’m aware of at least three other assistant instructors over the years, Ron Underhill, Gerald Schenk, and Dan Baxa, but there have only been two lead instructors…John Lackey for 33 years and Mike Cheney for the last 27 years!”

Throughout his tenure, Mike has overseen the construction of 27 homes—projects that have served both as hands-on learning experiences for students and valuable contributions to the community and region. While many of these homes remain in the Beloit area, some have journeyed as far as Hoxie and Meriden, Kansas. Each home stands as a testament to Mike’s dedication to quality, education, and community impact.

To honor Mike’s contributions, a retirement reception will be held on Wednesday, May 14th from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Severance Student Union conference room. Faculty, students, alumni, and community members are invited to attend and celebrate Cheney’s impactful career.

Coinciding with this farewell, is one final event Mike has long been a part of: the annual auction of the Beloit project house, which will take place on Thursday, May 22nd at 7:00 p.m. It’s a fitting close to a career built on foundations—both literal and figurative.

His legacy will live on through the homes he and his students built, the hundreds of students he taught, and the lives he has helped shape,” said Burks. “I appreciate all that Mike has accomplished. He was hired as only the second lead instructor in the program’s history, replacing his former instructor and mentor, John Lackey. Since then, Mike has been a cornerstone of the program sharing his knowledge of construction, as well as his passion for the trade and commitment to student success.“The continuity of the program and the quality homes it has produced has been incredible,” said Fort Hays Tech | North Central President, Eric Burks. “To have only two lead instructors over sixty years is remarkable. I’m aware of at least three other assistant instructors over the years, Ron Underhill, Gerald Schenk, and Dan Baxa, but there have only been two lead instructors…John Lackey for 33 years and Mike Cheney for the last 27 years!”Throughout his tenure, Mike has overseen the construction of 27 homes—projects that have served both as hands-on learning experiences for students and valuable contributions to the community and region. Fort Hays Tech | North Central to celebrate retirement of longtime instructor 

In a little under two weeks, Taisha Jacobs will graduate from Fort Hays State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Leadership. 

Taisha is the mother of two and the wife of a career Marine Corps officer. She is also one of the hundreds of military-connected adult students across the nation who have turned to FHSU Online for an educational experience staffed with professors and administrators who understand how the unique challenges of pursuing a college degree while balancing the demands and frequent upheavals that are an inherent part of military life.&nbsp;

A former postal service clerk and retail manager in civilian life, Taisha has fully embraced her new life as a Marine Corps spouse and senior military support services professional.

Taisha’s introduction to military life began when she met her future husband, Melvin Jacobs, at a Marine Corps Toys for Tots charity event in Kansas City.

“I saw this tall, handsome man in those Marine Corps dress blues and knew that was someone I really wanted to get to know,” Taisha recalled.

At the time, Lance Corporal Melvin Jacobs was in the midst of a major career comeback. Years earlier, while serving in Japan in 2009, the young Marine got into disciplinary trouble. Instead of ending his Marine Corps career, his commanding officer gave him a second chance. As part of a Summary Court-Martial, Melvin was sentenced to 30 days in the brig, loss of pay, and reduction in rank to private.

Melvin returned to his unit with a determination to rebuild his career. By 2010, his hard work paid off, and he was promoted back to Private First Class. Four months later, he earned a meritorious promotion to Lance Corporal. In July 2011, he completed his active-duty service and returned to Kansas to pursue his college degree.

One year later, Melvin felt called to service once again. His goal was to return as an Active Duty Reservist, but after months of waiting, Melvin was disappointed to learn he was not selected. Still, he remained determined to find another path back to the Marine Corps. By chance, Melvin was introduced to the Officer Selection Office. After hearing his story of perseverance and redemption, they encouraged him to apply for the Marine Corps Officer Program.

Melvin submitted his application and was later approved to attend Marine Corps Officer Candidate School (OCS). After completing the training, he returned home to graduate from Baker University.

In 2016, Melvin was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, and Melvin and Taisha married. In 2018, the couple reported to the Marine Corps base at Twentynine Palms in California for Communications School, followed by deployment to the Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, in 2019.

During Taisha’s first deployment as a military spouse, she went to work for the Marine Corps Single Marine program on base. This program works to identify and address quality of life concerns for her Marines through advocacy and the development of recreational activities, special events, and community involvement opportunities. In this role, Taisha coordinated, scheduled, and promoted recreational events, group travel programs, and volunteer opportunities for young, single servicemembers.

“My&nbsp;Marines got to be civilians when they were with me,” Taisha said. “They got to be themselves, and there were times when that release made all the difference, especially if they were struggling emotionally.”

Taisha’s tireless work in support of these 18-25-year-old Leathernecks fueled her passion for service and eventually earned her the nickname “Momma Tai.”

Taisha and Melvin also partnered to create what became known as the Adversary Recovery and Mentorship (ARM program at MCAS Iwakuni. The program includes a weeklong course, a dedicated mentor, and a graduation celebration.

“Melvin felt called to take what he learned from his personal experiences, including the importance of giving struggling Marines a second chance, and use the program to rescue the careers of struggling servicemembers when they needed the help most, Taisha said. “There needs to be more leaders like Melvin in the military.”

While in Japan, Taisha decided that if she wanted to pursue her own career and calling to serve others, she would need to earn a college degree. A counselor at the base education center suggested that to save money on tuition and fees, she should select a college in the state of her permanent residence. At that point, she had never heard of Fort Hays State University. Still, when she discovered that FSHU Online offered the degree field she wanted (organizational leadership) and an unmatched price point, she decided to join the Tiger Nation.

One of the great strengths of the Leadership Studies program at FHSU is the department’s commitment to serving the needs of military servicemembers, veterans, and military-connected families, including specialized programs that allow this population the opportunity to earn credit towards an associate or bachelor’s degree from their military training and experience.

As she neared the completion of her degree, Taisha faced several challenges and needed help. Amid a difficult pregnancy and the process of moving her family from Japan to the Marine Corps Base at Quantico, Virginia, and Melvin’s next duty assignment at Marine Command and Staff College, she needed to make some significant changes to her course schedule. That’s when Army veteran and Associate Professor of Leadership Programs, Dr. Seth Kastle, stepped in to assist.

“Having somebody in your corner like Dr. Kastle, who knows how to get things done in both military and higher education settings, was critical in keeping me on track to my degree,” Taisha said. “He was empathetic and understanding when I needed it most.”

Back in the U.S. in 2022, Taisha accepted a position with the United Services Organization (USO) as the Field Programs Manager in Quantico, where she is responsible for planning, delivering, and evaluating USO programs, activities, and events on and off U.S. military installations.

“Melvin plans to stay in the Marines until at least the 30-year mark,” Taisha said. “We’re not sure where our next duty assignment will be, but wherever we go, I’ll know that with my degree from FHSU Online, my passion to serve, and my extensive professional experience with the USO, I’ll be able to advance in my career and keep doing the work I love.”

The Hays Area Planning Commission will have a rezoning hearing at 4 p.m. today in city hall, 1507 Main, to hear a request from Hays developer Aaron Dreher to rezone property, 2707 Canal, east of the little Dillons.

The property is zoned commercial general, and Dreher is requesting a rezoning to multi-family residential so that apartments can be built there.

The Hays USD 489 school board will hear a report from its architect, DLR, and the building and grounds department about renovating the current Hays High School into a middle school.

Hays High staff are already preparing for the move into the new high school building, which is set to be completed in August.

Work will begin soon on the current high school to renovate it into a middle school. Middle school students and staff are set to move into their new building in January 2026.

The current middle school will be converted into a new elementary school.

The board will also hear a request for a $59,449 change order on the new high school project.

The board will consider the renewal of a five-year lease agreement with Sumner One for print management, copy machines, support and maintenance for $63,049 per year.

They will also hear a report on the district hiring process.
