&nbsp;One of the goals identified by the Ellis County Workforce Committee is to develop a collaborative system that promotes local students staying in Ellis County post-graduation. 

To help accomplish this, a community career building sub-committee has been formed, which includes: Hays High School Principal Shawn Henderson, Hays High School Assistant Principal Becky Hickert, Grow Hays Director of Recruitment and Retention David Clingan, Fort Hays State University Vice President for Economic Development Ben Schears, and The Chamber in Hays, Kansas President/CEO Sarah Wasinger.

Discussions within the ECWC have identified a need to catalyze stronger collaboration between the education and business communities, which has stimulated a groundbreaking partnership that will connect Ellis County business leaders with education administration and faculty, as well as students in high school and post-secondary. 

This will be accomplished by hosting a series of industry cluster meetings. 

During these engaging sessions, the following business will be conducted:

· Discussing enrollment numbers to track student trends and better understand employer needs in hard-to-fill positions in the next three to five years

· Sharing success stories centered around unique partnerships between businesses and individual students

· Bringing students in to share what resonates with them most when seeking employment and potentially connecting with employers for scholarship-to-work contracts

· Providing a platform for businesses to share their expectations directly with students

· Identify potential courses that need to be added into the curriculum to address future workforce needs

· Find potential opportunities for externships so faculty can shadow with employers to better understand their industry’s current and future needs

· Have students share what they are looking for from an employment perspective

Based on current clusters available within Ellis County high schools, the following industries will be grouped together for the 2025-2026 academic year:

The first meeting will feature the manufacturing, distribution, and welding cluster and will be held at the new Hays High School on September 10 from 8:15 to 9:45 a.m. in the hospitality room. 

Members of the sub-committee will be contacting businesses to register for this event. Details for future cluster meetings will be shared in future newsletters, and invitations will be extended to chamber members in each of the outlined industries.

Forging a stronger jobs pipeline to connect Ellis County students with local careers

Fort Hays Tech | North Central is proud to announce a transformative $1 million investment from the Dane G. Hansen Foundation in support of the college’s new Construction&nbsp;Innovation Center, scheduled to open in Spring 2026. This generous contribution will help fund&nbsp;the construction of the nearly 30,000-square-foot facility, designed to expand access to high demand career training in construction technology, electrical technology, plumbing/heating/AC,&nbsp;and commercial driving (CDL).

“This extraordinary gift from the Hansen Foundation demonstrates their deep commitment to&nbsp;strengthening technical education and workforce development in North Central Kansas,” said&nbsp;Eric Burks, president at Fort Hays Tech | North Central. “Their support accelerates our ability to&nbsp;train more students to meet the critical demand for skilled workers in our region and help address&nbsp;the need for more housing.”

Main break causes road closure in Hays; County Commission mtgs. moved

Gary L. Weber, 77, of Sylvan Grove, KS passed away July 31,
2025. 

He was born on June 19, 1948 in Colby, KS to Charlie and
Eunice Weber. Gary grew up in Goodland, KS and graduated in 1966 from Goodland
High School. In high school, he was noted for his athleticism and held a record
in track and was also an avid baseball player. He served in the Kansas National
Guard. He worked for Air Midwest Airline in Great Bend, KS prior to starting
his greyhound racing career. Gary raced greyhounds for 35 years in Colorado,
Kansas, Florida, and Texas. His legendary dog NIMBY TP JAN was awarded the
Flashy Sir award in 2005, deeming her the fastest dog in America. She was also
a member of the All American team in 2005.

Upon the closure of dog racing tracks in 2008, Gary assumed
raising Angus cattle. He actively participated in the cattle business with his
grandson, Blayne, until the time of his death. 

Gary’s most notable traits were his honesty and generosity,
but not to surpass his loyalty to the Denver Broncos.

Survivors are his wife, AnnaMary of Sylvan Grove, KS; sons
Derek Weber, Loveland, CO; Dusty (Kayla) Weber, Walden CO. Grandchildren Blayne
Weber, Sylvan Grove, KS; Brooklyn Weber, Walden, CO; Callie Weber, Loveland,

Joseph
Andrew “Joe” Couse, of Stockton, Kansas, passed away on July 31, 2025, at Chi
Health Bergan Mercy in Omaha, NE, at the age of 47. He was born on September 7,
1977, to John and Barbara (Hollar) Couse in Plainville, KS. 

Joe grew
up in the Osborne area and graduated from Osborne High School with the Class of
1996. On February 29, 2008, he married Bethany Pruett in WaKeeney, Kansas. They
made their home in Stockton and built a beautiful life and family together.

A hard
worker through and through, Joe drove trucks for Unruh Trucking Company. When
he wasn’t on the road, you could find him doing what he loved most—racing,
golfing, and spending time with his family. He was almost always with his
girls, whether they were helping him work on trucks, casting lines on fishing
trips, golfing, or cheering at the races. He also cherished time on the farm,
where he worked cattle with his dad, brothers, and his girls—who weren’t afraid
to roll up their sleeves and pitch in. Of course, when the brothers were
together, things were never too serious—there was always some joking around,
and more than once, they got a laugh out of zapping each other with the cattle
prod.

Joe is
survived by his wife, Bethany Couse of the home in Stockton; his mother,
Barbara Couse of Stockton; his children: Katlyn, Brooklyn, and Rylie Couse of
Stockton, and Shelby Sutter of Plainville; step-daughters: Shelby (Brian)
Kruger of Colby, Harli (John Arnold) of Plainville, and Amber (Jacob) Booth of
Hays. He is also survived by his siblings: Cindy (Kim) Westburg of Wausau, WI;

HAYS – With the NCAA's recent decision to expand
the Division II football playoffs from seven to eight teams per region, the
Fort Hays State Tigers have their sights set on the postseason. Had the new
rules been in place last year, the Tigers would have likely made the playoffs
after finishing the 2024 season with an 8-3 record and a No. 8 ranking in Super
Region 3.

The team officially kicked off its 2025 campaign
on Monday with the start of preseason camp on the new turf inside Lewis Field. Head
coach Chris Brown, entering his 14th season, was impressed with what he saw
from his players on day one.

"You could tell these guys really put the
time in this summer with the weight room and conditioning," Brown said.
"It was crisp, it was sharp. Guys knew what they were doing."

Brown noted that being so close to a playoff spot
last season fueled his team's motivation throughout the offseason. "Our
guys are hungry," he said. "They want to win the conference and they
want to get into the playoffs, and you could see that by what they did this
summer."

Despite the high hopes, Brown was quick to
emphasize that the past is in the past. "2024 is over," he stated.
"It’s about what this 2025 group does right now, that’s the most important
thing. I think the pieces to the puzzle are there; it's what they do with
it."

The Tigers will open their season at home against
Angelo State on Thursday, August 28.

Clayton Wayne Seaman, 61, of
Natoma, Kansas, passed away Friday, August 1, 2025 at the Rooks County Health
Center in Plainville, Kansas.

Clayton was born February 14,
1964 at the hospital in Osborne, Kansas.&nbsp;
He was one of two children born to Clayton William “Bill” and Nyla May
(Kreft) Seaman.&nbsp; He grew up in Natoma and
was a Natoma High School graduate of 1982.&nbsp;
He then attended Ft. Hays State University where he obtained a Bachelor’s
Degree in Agriculture.

Clayton worked for the Kansas
State University Agricultural Research Center in Hays, Kansas, spending most of
his years working with wheat until his retirement.&nbsp; He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church
where he served as the Secretary and the Treasurer.&nbsp; He was also a long-time member of the Natoma
Lions Club. He enjoyed watching movies, especially Star Wars movies, and
spending time with his nieces and nephew and later in life, his great nieces
and great nephews.

Surviving family include his
parents, Bill and Nyla Seaman of Natoma, Kansas; sister, Patty Eickhoff and
husband Dale of Natoma, Kansas; and two nieces, one nephew, four great nieces
and three great nephews.

Clayton was preceded in death by
his paternal grandparents Gordon and Ellen Seaman; his maternal grandparents
Erwin and Lorene Kreft; and a great-nephew, Darrian Shifflett.

Celebration of Clayton’s life
will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, August 8, 2025 at the Peace Lutheran Church
in Natoma.&nbsp; The family will be present to
greet friends the morning of the service at 9:30 AM.

Burial will follow at the North
Lutheran Cemetery in rural Natoma.&nbsp; A
Memorial has been established with Peace Lutheran Church.&nbsp; Contributions and condolences may be sent to
Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.

The Bob and Pat Schmidt Community Center is set to open this month.

Grow Hays received its occupancy permit last week.&nbsp;

Bright Minds will be opening its child care facility on the north side of the building, and the senior center will be moving into south side of the building before the end of the month.

The center area of the building is a community room that will be available to rent through Grow Hays. Call 785-628-3102&nbsp;for more information.

Grow Hays will host an official ribbon cutting at 9 a.m. Friday,&nbsp; Aug 29.

🎙 Schmidt Community Center complete, ribbon cutting set for Aug. 29

HILL CITY — The Hill City High School Alumni Scholarship Program (HCHSASP) has announced that this year’s winner of the annual&nbsp;Edna Dean Harrell Family Scholarship&nbsp;is&nbsp;Hannah Lee. 

She is a 2025 graduate of Hill City High and was awarded $5,000 to support her continuing education. She received the initial award this summer and will receive additional money in the following semesters. Under the rules of the Alumni Association, Lee must maintain a 3.0 grade point average to receive continuing assistance.

The scholarship winner is chosen annually by the HCHSASP and Mrs. Harrell’s son, Dan Harrell. The scholarship was established in 2009, just weeks after the passing of Mrs. Harrell, making Lee the 17th winner so far.

Originally established as a yearly $1,000 scholarship for a deserving Hill City High graduate to continue their education, the amount has increased steadily to its current award of $5,000 annually. In total, the scholarship has provided the 17 winners with more than $60,000 in educational assistance so far.

Lee commuted more than 25 miles round-trip to Hill City for school from Morland, her hometown. She also worked as an aide at Dawson Place (a retirement community in Hill City) and was a lifeguard at the local pool for several years.

Lee was exuberantly thankful to learn she had won the scholarship.&nbsp;“I am extremely&nbsp;grateful for the opportunity&nbsp;to receive this scholarship,” she said. “I am planning to attend Fort Hays State University in the fall, where I will study Human Health and Performance and get my bachelor’s degree. After I get my bachelor’s degree, I plan on pursuing&nbsp;physical therapy.”

Announcing the award, Harrell said, “In the end, Hannah emerged as the clear winner. She exemplifies the values and purpose that the Harrell Scholarship stands for – love of education, constant striving to be and know more, giving back to the community, and wanting to follow a career path that serves others. Her pursuit of a healthcare career gave her an added advantage as that path most honors my mother’s lifelong work.”

Hannah is the daughter of Barnaby and Melissa Lee.&nbsp;

VICTORIA- Victoria will double in size as Herzogfest draws crowds with the scent of bierocks and the spirit of German culture.

Brenton Hoffman, president of Herzogfest, said the two-day celebration, which will be Aug. 8-9, features traditional food, children’s activities, a car show and live music.

"It's our hometown's annual festival that represents our German heritage," he said.

The festival takes place Friday and Saturday on Main Street, offering more than a dozen activities and free entertainment:

Friday Food vendors open at 11 a.m. ZOG Olympics at 2 p.m. Drift Trikes at 3 p.m. Horsehsoes at 6 p.m. Matfield Green, music entertainment, at 7 p.m. 50/50 raffle at 8:45 p.m. Blaine Younger Band, music entertainment, at 9 p.m.

Saturday 5k run and walk at 8:30 a.m. Heritage Market at 9 a.m. Herzog Car Show, Jammin Randy, three-on-three basketball tournament, valve cover races and drift trikes at 10 a.m. Bingo at the VFW, 204 E. Herzogfest set for Aug. 8-9 in Victoria

WICHITA – The Hays Larks come up one win shy of a return
trip to the NBC World Series finals Friday, falling to the Lonestar Kraken 9-8 at
Eck Stadium.

The Larks (32-5-1) trailed by as many as seven runs in the
game but came back to force extra innings. But in the 10th, Lonestar pushed a
run across to advance to the NBC World Series finals Saturday against the
Hutchinson Monarchs. 

The Larks broke onto the scoreboard early, scoring a run on
Thomas Lyssy RBI single, putting Hays up 1-0.

Lonestar answered back with two runs in the bottom of the
second and then exploded for six more runs in the fourth inning.

The Kraken got a homerun and then took advantage of five
straight walks, six total in the inning, for the 8-1 lead. 

Hays got a run back on a wild pitch in the top of the fifth
and then added two runs in the seventh.

The Larks took advantage of three free passes in the inning.
Hays scored on a Trent Baker RBI single and a Brady Kreutzer walk with the
bases loaded, cutting the Kraken's lead to 8-4.

Hays got back-to-back singles to open the top of the eighth
inning and then opened the scoring with a two-run Tabor Stokes double, cutting
the deficit to 8-6.

After two men were retired, Baker singled in Stokes, making
it 8-7.

Still trailing by one, in the top of the ninth inning, the
Larks manufactured the tying run to send the game to extra innings.

A walk and a stolen base by Kaleb Duncan, followed by a
sacrifice bunt, put the tying run at third. Two batters later, Stokes grounded
out to the shortstop, scoring the run from third and tying the game at eight
with two outs.

Both teams threatened to score in their half of the 10th
inning, leaving two runners on base.

Then in the bottom of the 10th inning, Preston
Curtis connected on the third homerun of the game of the Kraken, lifting
Lonestar to a 9-8 victory.

Tabor Stokes collected two hits, runs and three RBIs for the
Larks. Trent Baker added two hits, runs and RBIs.

Julio Ramos suffered the loss. He allowed just the one run,
on five hits, with eight strikeouts over six and two-thirds innings.

Lorelei Jane 'Lorre' Williams, 63, Russell, died Thursday,
July 31, 2025 at HaysMed surrounded by her family.

She was born February 20, 1962 in Riverside, California the
daughter of William Lowe, Sr. and Maxine (Bartholomew) Lowe.&nbsp; On July 26, 1998 she was united in marriage
to Rob Williams at Lake Greeson in Murfreesboro, Arkansas.&nbsp; Lorre worked in hospitality services and for
many years was the head cook at the Russell Senior Center.&nbsp; She loved people, generously put the needs of
others before her own, and had a beautiful way of bringing laughter and smiles
to those around her.&nbsp; She was a member of
Celebration Community Church in Hays, collected pig and angel figurines, and
had a special bond with animals, especially her beloved dogs.

Survivors include her husband Rob of Russell, two sons, Jed
Dorris and wife Jenna of Eaton, Colorado and Travis Dorris of Russell, her
brother William Lowe (Brenda) of Wichita, her sister, Cyndi Rosenhoover of
Independence, five grandchildren, Hannah Dorris, Niyah Dorris, Nevin Dorris and
wife Aaliyah, Ava Dorris, Daegen Dorris, and her great granddaughter, Londyn
Dorris.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 9,
2025 at Celebration Community Church with Pastor Brant Rice officiating.&nbsp; The family will receive friends from 10:00 am
until service time at the church.&nbsp;
Memorials are suggested to the Humane Society of the High Plains,

WILSON — Kansas Originals, after 37 years of selling arts, crafts, books, and Kansas-made food products, is facing the demolition of its building and supporters thought it might be the end of the store and its mission.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/925f00e0-e00a-49cb-98b3-acfc1aeb3dd3">Although the building at exit 206 of Interstate 70 is still slated for demolition to make way for a new truck stop</a>, Kansas Originals has found a new home.

The store will close its off-interstate location on Sept. 30 and open on Oct. 1 at 2519 Ave. E in downtown Wilson.

Marge Lawson, Kansas Orginals CEO, said the new location will have a smaller showroom, but the nonprofit will have off-site storage to make up some of the difference.

The new location will have the same events as the former, including tastings of Kansas wines and events to meet local artisans.

"We're going to make it even better," Lawson said.

The nonprofit that operates the store owns its building, but not the land on which it sits. The building is set to be demolished on Nov. 30, Lawson said.

The Kansas Originals board is also pursuing satellite shops. The nonprofit is exploring a partnership with travel centers along the interstate. The organization had a satellite shop in the Topeka travel center until the pandemic hit in 2020.

Consumers can order some products from the store's website,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansasoriginals.com/.">www.kansasoriginals.com.</a>&nbsp;Lawson said the board is considering revamping its website and using it to promote more of the products available through the store.

However, she said because many of the crafts are handmade, inventory is limited.

The store will also likely add new signage to direct people from the interstate to the new store in Wilson.

Lawson, who was a co-founder of the Kansas Orginals, said she is thrilled the mission of the shop will continue.

She explained that mission in a letter to the Hays Post in May, "Our mission is to provide marketplaces for the work of Kansas artists, craftsmen and food producers, especially those who are 62 or over, low-income, disabled, minorities or women in business."

According to&nbsp;Post Rock Opportunities Foundation, which is the nonprofit that supports Kansas Originals,  more than 1,000 corporations, businesses, and individuals have supported the nonprofit through grants, sponsorships and monetary donations since its founding.

The Smoky Hill Foundation, Merrill Foundation, Kansas Arts Commission and Dane G. Hansen Foundation are among the Kansas Originals' supporters, as well as the local artisans and craftspeople who donate their work to fundraisers.

Kansas Originals will join other tourist stops in Wilson, and Lawson said she hopes the store will draw more visitors to the community of about 800.

Wilson proudly promotes its Czech heritage, with the <a href="https://www.travelks.com/listing/worlds-largest-czech-egg/41977/">world's largest Czech egg</a> and an annual <a href="https://wilsonczechfest.com/">After Harvest Czech Festival</a> that was celebrated last weekend.

It is also the home of the historic <a href="https://www.midlandrailroadhotel.com/">Midland Railroad Hotel</a>, and t<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/faccd0a7-80dc-4f2f-99f8-e084f88cb981">he community has rallied to create an outdoor entertainment venue from its former historic opera house, which burned in 2009.</a>

That new venue will open later this month.

"Yes. I am happy," she said. "It's going to be challenging, but it gives us exciting new opportunities."
