Daniel Wade Zahn, 61, Hoxie, Kansas, passed away October 11, 2024, from a
tragic heavy equipment&nbsp;accident in Sheridan County.

Dan was born August 31, 1963, to Marvel and Irene (Lytle) Zahn in
Bottineau, North Dakota.&nbsp; He was an avid basketball player. Through the
years many people were impressed with his sports and work ethic due to him
having only one hand as the result of a farm accident when he was four years
old. According to Dan he never had a disability he couldn’t conquer. He was a
determined kind of guy. After Dan finished high school in Westhope, North
Dakota, he joined the workforce as a heavy equipment operator. Soon after, he
met his first wife Nicole Roy. To this union two daughters, Shelby and Megan
were born.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

After his divorce Dan settled in Bogue, Kansas, where he started his
heavy equipment operating company, Dan’s Dirt Works, in 2006. He considered it
one of his greatest work accomplishments. Among his favorite jobs were building
locations, moving rigs and setting tank batteries. With his sense of humor, he
kept the job site very interesting.&nbsp; All
who knew Dan will never forget his infectious laughter, smart mouth and entertaining&nbsp;comments.
Dan loved sports, especially basketball. As a high school player, he was better
than most, scoring double digits. His love for sports continued as he took
special pride in his children and grandchildren’s sporting activities. 

Later in 2008 Dan met the love of his life Donata Geerdes. They were
married November 8, 2009. For the next 10 years the couple resided in Bogue.
Soon after Dan sold his business, he returned to his old roots working at the
Hoxie Feedyard.&nbsp;Dan enjoyed taking his grandchildren around the feedlot
and showing them his day-to-day work life. Dan was known to be able to do it
all at the feedyard: from feeding to mechanical work and heavy equipment
operating. 

Dan was preceded in death by his parents Marvel and Irene Zahn; his
sister-in-law Jerilyn Zahn; his brothers-in-law Rickie Gust and Leonard
Marcotte; his niece Amber Gust; and his great-nephew Boston Glueckert.
Survivors left to mourn his passing are his wife, Donata, of the home;
daughters Shelby (Nick) Geist and Megan (Cameron) Ghumm, both of WaKeeney; his
step-children: Cody (Crystal) Wolf, Hays, Matt (Jenna) Wolf, Grinnell, Chelsie
Wolf (Roger Billips), Bogue; his sisters Janell Gust, Claycomo, Missouri and
Susan O’Neil, Drayton, North Dakota; his brothers Teri Zahn of Westhope, North
Dakota and Bruce (Christy) Zahn of Wichita, Kansas; his mother-in-law Rosie
(Dennis) Hayes of Colby; his sister-in-law Brenda (Ed) Gaccetta of&nbsp; Parker, Colorado; 12 grandchildren with
another one due in January; many nieces and nephews, and countless friends.

Gene Charles Jaco passed away
on October 15, 2024, in Hays, Kansas at the age of 92. He was born on September
27, 1932, to Harry Morris and Inez Marie (Brown) Jaco in Nowata, Oklahoma. He
was united in marriage to Phyllis Maureen Mock on June 17, 1951, at the First
Christian Church in Plainville and the couple was blessed with three children:
Jana, Michael, and Jill.

Before moving to Plainville
with his family in 1938, Gene lived in St John, Kansas and on the Saline River
near Fairport, Kansas. He attended Plainville schools and graduated in May
1950. He loved sports, lettering in football, basketball and track. His Senior
year he made the 1st Team All State.

At the age of 6 he met the
love of his life, Phyllis Maureen Mock. They grew up together and spent lots of
time riding bikes and horses, swimming, skating, going to the movies on
Saturday and just enjoying life. They were blessed with 70 years of marriage.

Gene attended Fort Hays State
University where he lettered four years as left halfback on offense and safety
on defense, returning punts and kick offs. During those four years in college,
Gene worked at Gogleman Ford Co. in the body shop and planned on teaching math,
industrial arts, physical education and driver education. His first teaching
and coaching job was in Florence, KS where he taught industrial arts and driver
education. In the summer he coached Legion baseball. However, due to an
accident that hurt his back, he took a desk job in Wichita at Boeing for a
brief time before a new teaching opportunity arrived. In 1958 he signed a
contract to teach and coach in Woodston, KS teaching industrial arts, math,
drivers ed and physical education. In his third year he purchased a farm 6
miles south of Woodston. Phyllis and Gene began to milk cows, raise chickens
and hogs and planted a large garden. They sold the products their farm produced
for extra income. 

Gene moved his family to
Plainville in 1964 when the state began closing small high schools. He taught
math, physical education and driver’s education and coached boys’ basketball
and track. He stopped coaching two years later and began farming more. He
served as the athletic director at PHS, was a commissioner for two leagues and
served on the state committee. He stopped teaching in 1983 and became a Rooks
County commissioner in 1984, where he served until 1992. He continued to farm
and ranch until 2006. 

Gene is survived by his three
children: Jana (Ray) Kuhn of Overland Park, KS, Michael (Bonnie) Jaco of
Springfield, CO, Jill (Mark) Brin of Godley, TX; five grandchildren, Jesse
(Jena) Jaco, Braxton Brin, Adam Kuhn, Aaron (Stephanie) Kuhn, Amber Kuhn; and four
great-grandchildren: Tyler Jaco, Style Brin, Grayson and Callahan Kuhn.

Gene joins in his heavenly
home, his wife, Phyllis; parents, Harry and Inez Jaco; brother, John W. Jaco
Sr.; and nephew, John W. Jaco, Jr.

A Funeral Service will be held
on Friday, October 18, 2024, at the First Christian Church in Plainville at 11AM.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, 6PM until 7:30PM at the funeral
home in Plainville.

Grace Caroline Bohnen,
19, of Wilson, Kansas, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, October 13, 2024, at
the KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas, with her loving family by her
side.

Grace was born
November 17, 2004, in Wichita, Kansas.&nbsp;
She was the oldest of three children born to Todd and Christa
(Whitebird) Bohnen.&nbsp; From the age of
infant to second grade, Grace’s family lived in Bel Aire, Kansas.&nbsp; They moved to Wilson, where she grew up and
graduated from Wilson High School in the Class of 23. Grace was a leader among
her peers, family and within the community. She was class president for 3
years, cheer captain, and involved in several sports and school activities
where she led with passion and tenacity. She had an amazing spirit, contagious smile,
and a drive to always be the best version of herself. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Grace loved to be
surrounded by her close friends and family. She brought so much joy and
laughter everywhere she went. She was a leader, but also felt the need to take
care of people, whether it be her brothers, friends, or complete strangers.
She’ll be remembered for the love that she shared, bravery, and fearlessness to
live life to the fullest. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Grace is survived by
her parents, Todd and Christa Bohnen of Wilson, Kansas; two brothers, Wyatt
Bohnen and Garrett Bohnen of Wilson, Kansas; maternal grandmother, Judy

KANSAS CITY —A Kansas City motorcycle traffic officer was injured in an accident just after 9:30a.m. Wednesday, according to KCPD Officer Jake Becchina.

The crash occurred&nbsp;at Gregory and Troost.&nbsp; EMS transported the officer&nbsp; to the hospital with what is reported to be critical injuries, according to Becchina.

KCPD traffic investigations and the KCPD accident investigation sections were at the scene investigating the crash.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Ellis High School Fall Senior Night set for Oct. 18

Eight-foot statue of warrior brings to ground level massize statue atop dome

TOPEKA — Dedication on the Kansas Capitol grounds Tuesday of an eight-foot statue depicting a Kansa warrior’s drawn bow and arrow pointed to the North Star closed a monumental 22-year effort to complete the Ad Astra Plaza.

The privately financed project placed on a pedestal southwest of the Capitol a version of the 22-foot, 4,400-pound bronze artwork installed in 2002 atop the dome in honor of the original inhabitants of land incorporated into the state and to symbolize determination of people to achieve goals, as the state motto declared, “to the stars through difficulties.”

Gov. Laura Kelly joined members of the Kaw Nation, a bipartisan set of legislators and the son of late Salina sculptor Richard Bergen to mark installation of the Kansa statue, bronze plaques describing Kansas history and hundreds of bricks purchased to help finance the project.

“In its own right,” the governor said, “to the stars through difficulty is an accurate description for this project. This plaza has been a long time in the making. It’s a poignant reminder of our past and inspiring representation of the bright future that lies ahead.”

“If we don’t remember the past, we will not learn from it,” Bergen said. “My dad really would have loved to have been here today.”

Kimberly Jenkins, chairwoman of the Kaw Nation Tribal Council, said Kansa people lived and hunted for centuries on land that became Kansas. She said the Kaw population had dwindled to about 500 when forced to move in the 1870s to present-day Oklahoma. Citizenship eventually fell to approximately 200, she said, but the Kaw emerged as a self-governing, federally recognized tribe.

“This warrior, to me, is a symbol of how strong our people were and still are,” Jenkins said. “Even though our loved ones suffered from being moved from their homeland and forced to adapt to ways of others, they fought hard.”

Polling of Salina-area students led to the decision to create a statue depicting a Kansa warrior. However, the pedestal meant to host the ground-level version of the artwork sat empty for two decades.

Former Sen. Randall Hardy, who represented Salina in the Legislature from 2017 to 2021, said he was strolling on the statehouse grounds when he came across the bare six-foot pedestal. A plaque donated by former Gov. Bill Graves said the pedestal held a replica of the statue on the dome.

“It was empty. Seventeen bronze plaques had not been cast and placed on the walls. Two-thousand-six-hundred bricks for the plaza were not in place. I was, frankly, embarrassed by what I saw,” Hardy said.

He returned to his office and spoke to Sen. Elaine Bowers, a Concordia Republican who served on a legislative committee dedicated to preservation of the Capitol. Together, with lobbyist John Peterson and others a plan was developed to kickstart development of the plaza.

“I’m so pleased to be here, even though we’re 20 years late. It’s a great day,” Bowers said.

Fundraising was inspired by friends of Bill Brady, a legislator and lobbyist who died in March 2023. He was a presence in the statehouse for more than 40 years.

“His colleagues led the fundraising campaign to help complete the plaza in memory of Bill,” said Nancy Brady, his widow. “I can’t think of anything more meaningful to Bill and our family. I look forward to bringing my family and friends here for many years to come.”

Kansas governor, Kansa tribe members cap 22-year project by dedicating Capitol plaza

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect after a chase that started in a highway construction zone.

Just after 3a.m. October 12, a deputy sheriff attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a red 2012 Buick Verano that disregarded closed roadways due to construction near SE 29th Street and SE Adams Street, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

The driver, later identified as 20-year-old Beau D. Belisle, refused to stop and initiated a pursuit. The deputy terminated the pursuit near SE 29th Street and SE Wisconsin Avenue due to safety concerns. 

Deputies continued to search the area and located the abandoned vehicle with the driver walking nearby.&gt;&gt; 

The took&nbsp; Belisle into custody and booked him into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Fleeing and attempting to elude law enforcement, Speeding, Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, Reckless driving, Unsafe turning or stopping, Unlawful to drive in closed roadway, Possession of marijuana, Ignition interlock device and Interference with law enforcement.

KANSAS CITY—The Kansas City Public Safety Task Force closed the Westport Media Collective,&nbsp;315 Westport Road Suite 200, Kansas City, following a mass shooting and multiple complaints.

The business was operating without a valid license or a current fire marshal inspection, according to a media release from the Task Force.

"Kansas City government will take all steps available to ensure resident safety, including business closures for those endangering their customers and not complying with our laws," Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas wrote on his social media account.

On October 9, a shooting in the 300 block of Westport Road,&nbsp;injured four adults and a teenager.&nbsp; Police have not reported how or if the business was involved with the shooting. Police also have not reported an arrest or announced suspect details. The victims are&nbsp;expected to recover, according to KCPD.

Kansas City shuts down Westport business after mass shooting

WICHITA— The sentencing scheduled Wednesday for a Kansas man for kidnapping three children and sexually assaulting two of them&nbsp;last year has been continued to October 25, according to online records.

On Aug. 2, a jury convicted 23-year-old Manasseh Ward of kidnapping, four counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child, three counts of aggravated sodomy, attempted rape, aggravated assault and interference with law enforcement, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

In June, a judge ruled&nbsp;<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/InmateSearch/Details.aspx?Id=246512">&nbsp;Ward</a>&nbsp; was competent to stand trial for charges.

Just before 4p.m. January 4, 2023, a teenage girl reported being kidnapped by a man driving a blue vehicle in the 6600 block of East Boston in Wichita, according to Officer Chad Ditch.

The man later identified as Ward attempted to sexually assault the girl in the car. Ward let the child go and she reported the incident to a family member.

Just before 9a.m. January 5, two elementary-aged children, a boy and girl, left their home on foot in the 900 block of South Drury to head to Clark Elementary School at 650 S Apache in Wichita.

A man in a blue vehicle kidnapped the children. The suspect put both kids in his vehicle and then drove away. A short time later he dropped the boy victim off and left with the girl..

While gathering information officers were patrolling the area and located the suspect vehicle and attempted to stop it. &nbsp;A brief foot pursuit occurred and officers took Ward into custody in the 6600 block of East Boston.&nbsp; In September, police arrested Ward in connection with the alleged crimes.

Ward is scheduled to be sentenced on September 27, according to the district attorney's office.

Catholic Charities invites the community to a Volunteer Roundup Meeting for those interested in joining its mission at their new facility located at 1011 Centennial in Hays. This new facility will house the Catholic Charities offices and a new thrift store onsite. The meeting will take place on October 29 at 11:00 AM at the current office location, downstairs at 122 E. 12th St., Hays, KS 67601 (please note, this is not the new Centennial location).

"Our team is eagerly anticipating the completion of our new facility this fall," said Megan Robl, executive director of Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas. "While we don't have an exact opening date yet due to ongoing construction, our contractors are working hard to get everything finished up within the next several weeks. We're confident and excited to welcome our wonderful community members who want to join us in this mission of serving Hays and the surrounding area."

The new thrift store will be open to the public, accepting donations of clothing, household items, and other miscellaneous goods. The organization anticipates being able to start accepting donations in late November or early December.

At this time, there is a need to fill the thrift store volunteer schedule. Volunteers will play a vital role in the operations of the thrift store, which includes running the register, receiving and sorting donations, and assisting on the sales floor.

Catholic Charities plans Volunteer Roundup meeting

Last week crude-oil prices ranged from over $77 to lease than $74 per barrel. The near-month contract for light sweet NYMEX crude landed at $75.56 per barrel at the close of trading on Friday. That's a weekly gain of more than a dollar.&nbsp; By midday on Monday, traders gave it all back, with prices dropping two percent or more. NYMEX crude dropped below $72 and London Brent slipped below $78.Monday's price for Kansas Common crude at CHS in McPherson was down $1.75 from Friday at $64 per barrel. That's four dollars higher than at the first of the month, two dollars higher than at the first of the year, but $14 less than a year ago.

The government reports record high crude production, and a big increase in stockpiles. The Energy Information Administration reports weekly crude-oil production over 13.4 million barrels per day for the first time ever. Output for the week through October 4 averaged 13,432,000 barrels per day. Four-week average production nationwide is up more than two percent over a year ago. Cumulative production so far this year is up nearly one million barrels per day over last year at this time.

Commercial crude inventories increased nearly six million barrels to 422.7 million as of October 4.&nbsp; EIA reports stockpiles are about four percent below the five year seasonal average.

The Energy Department last week took delivery on another 400,000 barrels of crude oil for the Strategic Petroleum Reserves, at prices roughly $22 less than what we sold it for two years ago.

The US is a net importer of crude oil, importing more than we export by nearly 2.5 million barrels per day. Crude imports are down nearly 400,000 barrels from last week, at just over 6.2 million barrels per day. The four week average is down more than 230,000 barrels a day or about two percent over the same four weeks a year ago. US exports drop 80-thousand daily barrels to just under 3.8 million barrels per day. Four week average exports are down from last year by more than 200,000 barrels a day.

The Rotary Rig Count from Baker Hughes shows 586 active drilling rigs nationwide as of Friday, an increase of two oil rigs and a decline of one seeking natural gas. The tally in Texas was up six rigs. Oklahoma was up one while Louisiana, New Mexico and Pennsylvania were each down two rigs.

The Kansas Rig Count from Independent Oil and Gas Service is up one at 12 rigs in the eastern half of the state, and unchanged at 17 active rigs in Western Kansas. The statewide total is up more than 20% from a month ago, but down 27 percent from last year at this time. Crews are moving in and rigging up drilling tools for new wells in Barton and Ellis counties. Operators on Friday were about to spud a new well Friday in Stafford County.

Kansas geologists met last week to recognize and name three new oil fields in Kansas. Independent Oil and Gas Service reports those fields are located in Gove, Logan and Thomas counties.

Kansas regulators okayed 26 new drilling locations in the week through October 10. That's 839 so far this year. Out of 13 permits in Western Kansas, three are in Barton County and one is on a lease in Stafford County.

Operators completed 19 wells, ten east of Wichita and nine in Western Kansas. Independent Oil and Gas Service places one in Barton County, one in Ellis County and two in Stafford County.&nbsp; That's 1,044 new well completions so far this year, down nearly 300 wells from a year ago.

Attacks on crude tankers in the Middle East last year prompted some dramatic, and expensive changes to the way the region brings oil to market. According to the US Energy Information Administration the amount of crude oil and oil products flowing through the southern choke point at the mouth of the Red Sea dropped by more than half during the first eight months of this year.&nbsp; Some vessels are now taking longer, more costly routes around the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa. Citing data from the freight analytics firm Vortexa, EIA says crude shipments along the Red Sea route dropped from 8.7 million barrels per day for all of last year to about four million barrels per day so far his year.

Chevron has agreed to sell its remaining stake in Alberta, Canada's oil sands to Calgary-based Canadian Natural Resources for $6.5 BILLION. The all-cash deal is expected to close by the end of the year. The company is refocusing on the Permian basin of Texas and New Mexico, its new assets in central Asia, and a deal for offshore assets in South America.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Operators on Friday were about to spud a new well Friday in Stafford County.Kansas geologists met last week to recognize and name three new oil fields in Kansas. Independent Oil and Gas Service reports those fields are located in Gove, Logan and Thomas counties.Kansas regulators okayed 26 new drilling locations in the week through October 10. That's 839 so far this year. Out of 13 permits in Western Kansas, three are in Barton County and one is on a lease in Stafford County.Operators completed 19 wells, ten east of Wichita and nine in Western Kansas. Independent Oil and Gas Service places one in Barton County, one in Ellis County and two in Stafford County.&nbsp; That's 1,044 new well completions so far this year, down nearly 300 wells from a year ago.Attacks on crude tankers in the Middle East last year prompted some dramatic, and expensive changes to the way the region brings oil to market. According to the US Energy Information Administration the amount of crude oil and oil products flowing through the southern choke point at the mouth of the Red Sea dropped by more than half during the first eight months of this year.&nbsp; Some vessels are now taking longer, more costly routes around the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa. Citing data from the freight analytics firm Vortexa, EIA says crude shipments along the Red Sea route dropped from 8.7 million barrels per day for all of last year to about four million barrels per day so far his year.Chevron has agreed to sell its remaining stake in Alberta, Canada's oil sands to Calgary-based Canadian Natural Resources for $6.5 BILLION. The all-cash deal is expected to close by the end of the year. The company is refocusing on the Permian basin of Texas and New Mexico, its new assets in central Asia, and a deal for offshore assets in South America.&nbsp;&nbsp;

WICHITA, Kan. – Fort Hays State Men's Golf, which received votes in the latest national poll, turned in another strong performance by taking the team title at the Newman Invitational in come-from-behind fashion. The Tigers were in third place after day one, 10 strokes back of the lead, but surged to a one-stroke win on day two of the tournament. Cooper Scheck&nbsp;of FHSU took medalist honors by winning a three-way playoff. The event was held at Terradyne Country Club, October 14-15.

Newman led the tournament after round one, shooting 1-under par (283) as a team. That gave the Jets an eight-stroke cushion over Northeastern State, which carded a 291 in the first round, and a 10-stroke advantage over Fort Hays State, which shot 293 in the opening round.

Newman struggled mightily on day two in comparison to its first-round success, which allowed Fort Hays State and Northeastern State back into the team title race on Tuesday. Though scoring conditions were tougher for the entire field on day two, Fort Hays State put up the best total and it was enough to inch past both Newman and Northeastern State. The Tigers shot 302 as a team in the second round, nine strokes better than Newman's 313, to defeat the Jets by one stroke. Northeastern State shot 307 on day two and finished three stokes back of FHSU. The Tigers won the tournament with a total of 595, with the Jets (596) and RiverHawks (598) joining as the three schools to shoot under 600 overall.

The individual title was a thrilling finish as well with three players tying for first at 3-under par overall. Scheck&nbsp;of Fort Hays State emerged victorious as the individual medalist in the 3-man playoff, taking two holes to claim the title. Scheck and Grant Delsart of Newman each carded a 5 on the first playoff hole, while Mathieu Zerwin of Northwestern Oklahoma State was eliminated with a 6. On the second playoff hole, Scheck was one stroke better than Delsart for his first individual tournament title at Fort Hays State and his fourth-straight Top 10 finish of the fall.

Scheck had to create a rally just to get into position for the individual medalist playoff. He did it at the par-5 17th&nbsp;hole with an eagle 3 to move from 1-under to 3-under overall. He carded par on the final hole to finish 4-under par for the day with a second-round 67. He had four birdies and the eagle in the round to counter two bogeys, and he was bogey-free on the final 10 holes of the day. Scheck shot 72 (+1) in the first round, a round that included three birdies, before his second-day charge.

Zerwin of NWOSU charged hard on his final five holes, stringing birdie-par-birdie-eagle-par (-4) to go from 1-over to 3-under and into the playoff. Delsart of Newman went from even to 3-under over the final five holes with a sequence of eagle-par-bogey-birdie-birdie to get into the playoff. Scheck, Zerwin, and Delsart were the only three players in the field to finish under par overall.

Cole Streck was consistent over his two rounds, shooting 74 (+3) each day for a 148 (+6) total. He tied for seventh and had five birdies in the tournament. Jacob George&nbsp;placed 12th&nbsp;with rounds of 70 (-1) and 80 (+9) for a 150 (+8). He had six birdies in the tournament, including five in the first round. Parker Krob&nbsp;tied for 27th&nbsp;with a 158 total after rounds of 77 and 81. Jackson Rader&nbsp;tied for 38th&nbsp;at 161 with rounds of 80 and 81.The Tigers also took four members of the team who played as individuals in the event and two turned in top-10 finishes. In his first tournament of the fall, Jordan McCaslin&nbsp;shot 3-over par overall to finish alone in fourth place individually. He shot 70 (-1) and 75 (+4) to finish six strokes back of the three-way tie at the top. He had four birdies in the first round and 25 pars overall. Ashton Dowell&nbsp;tied fellow teammate Streck for seventh individually, matching the scores posted by Streck with 74 (+3) in each round. Dowell had five birdies and one eagle in the tournament. Tyler Cassaday&nbsp;(47th&nbsp;– 173) and Ben Deges&nbsp;(178 – 50th) also competed as individuals. Cassaday had rounds of 80 and 93, while Deges had rounds of 86 and 92.

FHSU topped four MIAA schools participating in the tournament, which also included Pittsburg State in fourth to give the conference a first-through-fourth sweep in team scores at the top.

The team win was the first for Fort Hays State in a tournament since 2021 when the Tigers won the Bethel Spring Invitational held in Hesston and Newton, Kansas at Hesston Golf Course and Sand Creek Station Golf Course. Scheck was the first Tiger to earn medalist honors in a tournament since Bryce Cowan, who tied for medalist honors in that same Bethel Spring Invitational in 2021.

The Tigers head to Topeka, Kansas next week for the Washburn Invitational. The tournament is set to take place at the Topeka Country Club October 21-22.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She started strong as well, finishing round one with a 7-over-par 78, which had her in eighth place. She maintained that position on day two, carding a 12-over-par 83. She had a total of 161 (+19) for the tournament, only six strokes back of the individual medalist. Kerr had four birdies in the tournament.

Northeastern State claimed the team title in the seven-team field with rounds of 317 and 315, finishing the tournament at 632 (+64). Jessica Parker of NSU earned individual medalist honors, shooting 77 and 78 for a 155 total (+13).

The Tigers will return to action in two weeks when they head to Tulsa, Okla. to compete in the Tulsa Cup on October 28-29 at The Club at Forest Ridge.

⛳ FHSU women fourth at Newman Invite

Kansas City, Mo.&nbsp; –&nbsp;Kansas City civic leader and philanthropist Donald J. Hall passed away October 13, 2024, at home surrounded by his loving family, the company reported on their corporate web site Tuesday. Hall was 96.

Born July 9, 1928 in Kansas City, Missouri, Don was the son of Hallmark founder J.C. Hall and his wife, Elizabeth. He grew up in and around the family business, officially joining Hallmark at age 17 as an assistant salesman and working a territory while majoring in economics at Dartmouth College.

After graduation, Don left the company to serve his country in the U.S. Army, spending much of his military career as an officer at a base in Gifu, Japan.

Don returned to Hallmark in 1953 and assumed leadership positions, becoming administrative vice president in 1958 and president and chief executive officer in 1966. “My father lived our beliefs and values his whole lifetime, and his ability to translate them in a way that others could understand will remain part of his lasting legacy,” Don’s son, Donald Hall, Jr. said. “He truly believed that Hallmark’s purpose was to enrich people’s lives, and you continue to see that reflected in our brand and our people today.”

In 1983, Don moved from the position of president to chairman, and in 2016, he became chairman emeritus, a role he held until his death.

Don also chaired the Hall Family Foundation, the private philanthropic organization formed from the estates of J.C. and Elizabeth Hall to enhance the quality of human life in the Kansas City area. The foundation has served as a catalyst and community partner for Kansas City-area charities since its start in 1943.

“Don led Hallmark through its greatest period of growth, and our brands – Hallmark, Crayola and Hallmark Media – are beloved because of his leadership,” said Mike Perry, president and CEO of Hallmark. “He led the introduction of new product lines and development of Hallmark’s network of independent retailers. Don oversaw the development of Crown Center in Kansas City and the acquisition of Crayola in 1984. He took great pride in the Hallmark Hall of Fame, maintaining his father’s commitment to high-quality family entertainment and continued to review scripts and production details even as he stepped back from day-to-day roles with the company.”

Don loved his hometown, Kansas City. He believed in its people, its potential and its future, a commitment he shared with his late wife, Adele. Backing that belief with unyielding community support, Don’s influence was felt – often in behind-the-scenes roles where he was most comfortable – in virtually every major civic project from the 1960s through the early 2000s.

Starting in the late 1960s, the vision of Don and his father J.C. Hall led to the development of the Crown Center complex, a “city-within-a-city” on the land surrounding Hallmark’s headquarters in Kansas City. As an early example of urban revitalization and one of the nation’s first mixed-use redevelopments, this project turned a blighted 85-acre section of the city into a thriving retail, residential, office and entertainment complex that today welcomes more than 5 million visitors each year.

He was a founding member of the Kansas City Community Foundation, and with other civic leaders was a guiding force behind the early 1970s “Prime Time” news bureau effort that gave Kansas City a burst of national attention and was credited with attracting the 1976 Republican National Convention to Kansas City. He also helped establish the Kansas City Area Economic Development Council to attract new businesses to the region.

As chairman of the Civic Council, he brought civic interests together to establish the Kansas City Neighborhood Alliance and the Kansas City Minority Supplier Development Council&nbsp;(later the Mid-America Minority Business Development Council).

“He was deeply committed to the Kansas City community, understanding the importance of giving back and fostering inclusive prosperity,” Don’s son, David Hall, said. “He took special pride in his work with the Minority Supplier Development Council. He firmly believed it was essential for the business community to contribute toward a better future for everyone.”

Don was a consistent champion of the United Way of Greater Kansas City. In later years, he supported the region’s life sciences initiatives, worked to achieve the University of Kansas Cancer Center’s successful designation as a National Cancer Institute, and led efforts to establish the Children’s Research Institute at Children’s Mercy Hospital. Following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, he recognized the importance of creating the Kansas City Regional COVID-19 Response and Recovery Fund, which provided critical funding for nonprofits dealing with the human tragedy caused by the pandemic.

He was a decades-long supporter of Kansas City’s Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, serving on the Board of Trustees for 31 years. He recognized the importance of photography as an art form, and in the 1960s he began building the Hallmark Photographic Collection. It became a world-class collection that was eventually given to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in 2005 and supported since then by substantial gifts from the Hall Family Foundation. The museum recognized Don’s years of service and support in 2013 when it unveiled the modern sculpture collection as the Donald J. Hall Sculpture Park.

Over the years, Don was a gracious recipient of awards and board positions. President George H.W. Bush appointed Don to serve as chairman of the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities. He also served on the board of the National Minority Supplier Development Council. President Ronald Reagan awarded Don the National Medal of Arts in 1985. In 1982, Don received the Governor’s Award from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for Hallmark’s contributions through the Hallmark Hall of Fame. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws from alma mater Dartmouth College in 2000. In 2005, Don served on the boards of the Kansas City Symphony, the Missouri Repertory Theater&nbsp;(later the Kansas City Repertory Theatre), the Lyric Opera of Kansas City and the Full Employment Council. He was a past chairman of the board of Midwest Research Institute&nbsp;(now MRIGlobal).&nbsp;

Don received the Kansas Citian of the Year Award in 1972 from the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Kansas City and the Philanthropist of the Year award in 1985 from the Greater Kansas City Council on Philanthropy. In 1993, Don was honored with a Midwest Research Institute Trustee Citation. His keen interest in architecture, so evident in Kansas City’s Crown Center development, was acknowledged with an award of excellence from the Kansas City Architectural Foundation in 1985 and an honorary membership in the American Institute of Architects.

Don was married to Adele until her death in 2013. He was the father of three children: Don, Jr.; David; and Margaret. Don had nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was also a decades-long member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church.

Hall was 96.Born July 9, 1928 in Kansas City, Missouri, Don was the son of Hallmark founder J.C. Hall and his wife, Elizabeth. He grew up in and around the family business, officially joining Hallmark at age 17 as an assistant salesman and working a territory while majoring in economics at Dartmouth College.After graduation, Don left the company to serve his country in the U.S. Army, spending much of his military career as an officer at a base in Gifu, Japan.Don returned to Hallmark in 1953 and assumed leadership positions, becoming administrative vice president in 1958 and president and chief executive officer in 1966. “My father lived our beliefs and values his whole lifetime, and his ability to translate them in a way that others could understand will remain part of his lasting legacy,” Don’s son, Donald Hall, Jr. said. “He truly believed that Hallmark’s purpose was to enrich people’s lives, and you continue to see that reflected in our brand and our people today.”In 1983, Don moved from the position of president to chairman, and in 2016, he became chairman emeritus, a role he held until his death.Don also chaired the Hall Family Foundation, the private philanthropic organization formed from the estates of J.C. and Elizabeth Hall to enhance the quality of human life in the Kansas City area. Leader of world-renowned Kansas City company dies at 96

WASHINGTON (AP) — The National Zoo's long dark panda drought has come to an end.

Eleven months after the zoo sent its three&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/giant-pandas-china-national-zoo-b5923fc76613a15ade02fd332e1330df">wildly popular pandas</a>&nbsp;— Mei Xiang, Tian Tian and their cub Xiao Qi Ji — back to China, a new pair of bears arrived late Tuesday morning.

The three-year old giant pandas, named Bao Li and Qing Bao, were flown from China to Dulles International Airport in suburban Virginia, with a refueling stop in Alaska. They were loaded into special FedEx trucks and arrived at the zoo just before noon.

"Our team has worked tirelessly to prepare for the pandas’ arrival, and we’re thrilled to welcome Bao Li and Qing Bao to Washington, D.C., the only place you can see giant pandas for free in the nation,” said Brandie Smith, the national zoo director who travelled to China to take part in farewell ceremonies for the bears there. "As a result of our collective efforts, today we joyfully celebrate a new chapter of our 52-year-long giant panda breeding and conservation program.”

The zoo was closed Tuesday to facilitate the arrivals. The bears will be quarantined from the public for at least 30 days. A statement from the zoo set the date for the bears' official public debut and the reopening of the renovated panada house as Jan. 24, 2025.

Bao Li (precious vigor) and Qing Bao (green treasure) arrive in Washington as part of a new 10-year agreement with Chinese authorities. In Washington, National Zoo officials remained conspicuously silent about negotiations for a new panda agreement, but they expressed optimism about striking a new deal and launched a multimillion-dollar renovation of its panda enclosure in anticipation. Then in late May, Smith&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/giant-pandas-washington-zoo-china-764f8016d98c01ab579bdbb6dcc3dd6b">teamed up with first lady Jill Biden</a>&nbsp;to announce that Bao Li and Qing Bao would be arriving by the end of this year.

Pandas have become one of the unofficial symbols of the nation’s capital, dating back to 1972 when the first pair — Ling Ling and Hsing Hsing — were sent as a gift from Chinese Premier&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zhou_Enlai">Zhou Enlai</a>&nbsp;following President Richard Nixon’s historic diplomatic visit to China. Later, a rolling series of 10-year cooperation agreements was struck.

“The giant pandas are an iconic part of the Washington, D.C., story, both for locals and incoming travelers alike,” said Elliott L. Ferguson, II, president and CEO of Destination DC. “The interest and excitement associated with their return directly benefits the entire city, bringing further interest and visitors to our hotels, restaurants and other attractions.”

The exact terms of the deal are still unclear; under previous 10-year agreements the Chinese government receives $1 million per year, per bear. Any cubs born in overseas zoos are typically returned to China before they reach age four.

Liu Pengyu, a spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in Washington, credited the decades of cooperation with advancing research into panda preservation and breeding. During the lifespan of these agreements, giant pandas have been reclassified from an endangered species to merely vulnerable.

“The current round of cooperation will focus on prevention and treatment of major diseases, and protection of habitats and wild giant panda populations,” Liu said in an email. “We hope the arrival of the pandas will inject fresh impetus into exchanges between China and the U.S., and help to stabilize the broader bilateral relationship as well.”

2 giant pandas from China arrive in US on loan to National Zoo

Charles John “Charlie” Dreiling, age
91, of Victoria, Kansas passed away on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at Via
Christi Village Care Center in Hays, Kansas.

He was born on September 17, 1933, in Victoria, Kansas to Alphonse J. and
Sophie (Sander) Dreiling.&nbsp; He was married to Nancy (Wheaton) for 23 years
and later separated.

&nbsp;He was a member of The Basilica of Saint Fidelis and Knights of Columbus both
of Victoria.&nbsp; He was a U S Army veteran and served during the Korean
Conflict. &nbsp;

Charles grew up in Victoria, and graduated from Victoria High School in 1951.
He then&nbsp;went to St. Benedict’s College in Atchison for a year before
joining the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War. After serving, he returned
home and went to Fort Hays State University graduating in Business
Administration in 1959.

He moved to Denver, CO and worked for Shell Oil Co. where he met his former
wife, Nancy.&nbsp; He worked for Shell for many years and eventually took him
to Houston, Texas. While staying with the oil industry, he later moved to Dallas,
TX where he remained for 23 years before moving back to Victoria.

From a young age, Charlie was an athletic individual with a special love
for baseball. He loved to play, attend and watch many sporting events
throughout his life. He was a big supporter of his children’s sports from
coaching his sons’ baseball teams to cheering on his daughters in many sports
but specifically soccer.&nbsp; In Charlie’s later years, his pride and joy were
his three granddaughters, [Charlie’s Angels]. He especially loved attending
their sporting events and cheering them on, as well.

Charles is survived by his children, Tami Robben and husband, Jason “Jake”,
Hays, Ks; Debbie Dreiling and spouse, Adrienne Dreiling, Gardena, CA; his
grandchildren, Isabel Robben, Maggie Robben, and Caroline Robben; his brother, Jim
Dreiling, Parker, CO; his sister, Theresa Ellis and husband, Clark, Lafayette,
CO; brother-in-law, Will Dell, Littleton, CO ; his sisters-in-law, Dorothy
Dreiling, Hays, KS; Jeanette Dreiling, Victoria, KS; and several nieces and
nephews; great nieces and great nephews, great great nieces and great great
nephews.&nbsp; 

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Alphonse and Sophie Dreiling; his
former wife, Nancy Dreiling-Mowery; his sons, Derek and Devin; his brothers,

Moster O.F.M. Cap.&nbsp; &nbsp;The burial will be in Saint Fidelis Cemetery,
Victoria, Kansas with military honors by the Victoria V.F.W. Post # 1751.

Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday, at Cline’s-Keithley
Mortuary, Victoria, Kansas and from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M. Friday, at The Basilica
of Saint Fidelis.

Charles John Dreiling

Robin Dawn (Campbell) Henman, of Ellis, Kansas died Sunday,
October 13, 2024 at HaysMed - Hays.&nbsp; She was born March 20, 1958, in
Gunnison, Colorado. Her parents are Albert B. Campbell (College Station, TX)
and Patricia (Welling) Campbell Albrecht (Hays, KS). Robin was preceded in
death by her grandparents Albert Beryl Campbell and Roberta (Richardson)
Campbell, and Sarah (Lacey) Welling and SA Welling, as well as her stepfather,
Gerhard “Gary” Albrecht. Robin is survived by her husband, Perry Henman; son, Isaac
Henman (Kenzie); daughter, Sarah Finger (Ian); and grandchildren Jaxon,
Remington, Raylan Henman, and Halle Finger, all of Ellis. She is also survived
by her brothers Austin Blaine Campbell (Marcie) of Madison, WI; Flint Campbell
(Carol) of Arnold, KS; Kyle Campbell (Bun) of Montgomery, TX, sister in law,
Jackie Henman, Ellis, KS; and step-sisters Vicki Albrecht of Hays, KS; and
Tracy Albrecht-Ilic (Borna) of Inglewood, CA, along with multiple nieces and
nephews.

Robin grew up in Gunnison and Delta, CO, Roswell, NM, Scottsdale,
AZ, and graduated high school in Manhattan, KS. She received her Bachelor’s in
Education and Master’s in Special Education from Fort Hays State University.
Robin taught kindergarten in Palco, KS, special education at Roosevelt Grade
School in Hays, KS, and special education at Washington Grade School in Ellis,
KS. Robin was also the Ellis JH cheer coach for many years. She retired after
33 years of teaching but continued to substitute teach in the Hays and Ellis
school districts.

Robin was an active member of the Ellis United Methodist Church
(especially Seeker’s Club and High School Fifth Quarter), the Ellis PEO Chapter
F.O., and the Ellis Public Library Board. She enjoyed being a tour guide at the
Walter P. Chrysler Museum, Ellis County election worker, as well as being a
part-time cowgirl. Robin had great fun waitressing at the former GiGi’s Café in
Ellis and at Rosie’s Bar &amp; Grill in WaKeeney.

She also enjoyed her daily morning exercise group, FHSU sporting
events, babysitting grandchildren, warm beach vacations, sewing and quilting,
monthly ladies’ Bunko gatherings, line judging volleyball games, ticket-taking
at the visitors’ gate for EHS football games, baking dessert for Ellis Rotary
Club, running the Ellis JH and HS games score clock, and, last but not least,
changing the outdoor library sign for the monthly book club topic and quote.

Robin was a doer and organizer of all things family and friends.
She knew no strangers and lived life to fullest. To know Robin was to know
love. She was the greatest and most irreplaceable wife, mother, and Memaw,
always seen with a smile and a happy heart.

Funeral Services will be Tuesday, October 22, 2024 at 10:00 AM at
the Ellis United Methodist Church, 1201 Washington Street Ellis, Kansas 67637
with a memorial visitation from 9 AM until service time at the church.
Inurnment will follow the services in the Mount Hope Cemetery.&nbsp; Memorial
visitation will be on Monday, October 21, 2024 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at
Keithley Funeral Chapel, 400 East 17th Street Ellis, Kansas 67637.

JOHNSON COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a burglary and asking the public for help to identify suspects.

Just before 10:30p.m. October 10, police responded to a report of an auto burglary in the parking lot of a hotel near Midland Drive and Renner Road, in the city of Shawnee.

 The suspects arrived in a newer gray four-door BMW sedan with an unknown license plate. If you have any information or recognize the suspects, please call 913-742-6776.
