HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State volleyball team opened the 2025 season with a pair of victories Friday at the Tiger Invitational, defeating Cameron in straight sets before taking down Arkansas Tech in four frames. The Tigers start the year 2-0, while both opponents went 0-2 on the day inside Gross Memorial Coliseum.

Grace Schmedding led the squad with 26 kills across the seven frames, averaging 4.33 per set. Ashlyn Reeves added 20 kills and four blocks, while Abrey Galt paced the team with 47 assists.

The Tigers will wrap up the Tiger Invitational with two more matches on Saturday (Sept. 6), including a 2 p.m. date with Kansas Wesleyan before concluding the weekend at 7 p.m. against Rockhurst.

Fort Hays State 3, Cameron 0 The Tigers opened the day with an efficient sweep of Cameron that took all of 73 minutes, 25-18, 25-17, 25-16. The Tigers dominated offensively with a .306 hitting percentage and tallied six service aces. Cameron struggled to keep pace, hitting just .146 for the match. The Tigers did not trail in the match, with the Aggies managing just one tie at 10-10 in the second set.

Fort Hays State opened the first set with a commanding 4-0 run, highlighted by two kills from Grace Schmedding, both assisted by Abrey Galt. Ashlyn Reeves later contributed a service ace at 13-11 and a subsequent kill, extending the advantage. Ella Goodwin capped off the 25-18 victory with a kill off a pass from Galt.

After distributing 13 assists in the opening frame, Galt matched that effort with 13 more assists in the second set. The Tigers used an 8-2 run midway through the frame to take control thanks in part to a pair of combo blocks from Reeves and Galt and Reeves and Peyton Bergschneider.

Six kills from Schmedding and three from Carsyn Cormaney helped the Tigers pull away in the final set, ultimately securing the 25-16 win with a service ace by Kirsten Evans.

Galt recorded 32 assists and added six kills on eight attempts, while Schmedding led the team with nine kills. Bergschneider and Reeves each delivered eight kills, with Reeves adding two blocks and two service aces. Evans anchored the defense with 11 digs across three sets, while also contributing three assists. Haley Beggs led the Aggies with seven kills, while Jennifer Valdez had three blocks in the loss.

Fort Hays State 3, Arkansas Tech 1 After dropping the first set 25-22, Fort Hays State rallied to take the next three sets 28-26, 25-15, 25-18. The turning point came in set two when the Tigers rallied for close win, shifting the momentum in their favor. They recorded 61 kills and 85 digs on the night, compared to 52 kills and 78 digs for the Golden Suns.

The Tigers never led in the opening frame, falling behind by as many as eight points. FHSU was able to rally within two by the end of the set, but a kill allowed the visitors to take the opener 25-22.

Arkansas Tech continued to control things early in the second set, leading for much of the way. FHSU took its first lead of the match at 18-17, but the Golden Suns rallied back to reach set point at 24-21. Grace Schmedding kept the Tigers alive with a kill before a pair of ATU errors tied the score at 24. FHSU fought off another set point at 25-24 before kills from Ella Goodwin and Peyton Bergschneider leveled the match with a 28-26 win.

The Tiger defense came alive in the third set, racking up five blocks while limiting Arkansas Tech to an attack percentage of .020. Four kills from Schmedding and an Annie Eaton service ace helped the home team cruise to a 25-15 victory, putting the Tigers in front 2-1.

Fort Hays State scored seven-straight points to take control of the fourth set, turning a 5-4 deficit into an 11-5 lead. The Tigers continued to add to their lead, going up by as many as eight points before taking the frame 25-18.

Schmedding led Fort Hays State with 17 kills and 18 digs, contributing a total of 18 points. Reeves added 12 kills and two block assists, while Eaton recorded a team-high 19 assists and three service aces. Reeves also reached double figures with 12 kills, while Bergschneider added nine kills and 12 digs. Erika Hernandez led Arkansas Tech with nine kills and two total blocks over the match.

🏐 FHSU picks up two wins to open 2025 campaign

Linda Louise Ward Mosier, Hays,
entered Heaven on June 25, 2025, surrounded at the time of her passing by
family and skilled, caring HaysMed staff.

Linda was born the first of four children to Arlin and
Shirley (Kilmer) Ward on June 6, 1944 in Valdosta, Georgia at Moody Air Force
Base.&nbsp; There, Arlin served in the U.S. Army
as a pilot and first lieutenant. This significant date in American History was
also D-Day, known as the beginning of the end of World War II. &nbsp;Linda’s mother would often tell the story of
Linda’s birth, recounting that the hospital staff repeated ‘your baby was born
on D-Day!’ while neglecting to inform her upon numerous requests that she had
delivered a girl.

Following his military service, Arlin worked for Pillsbury
Mills and then went on to become a professor at Kansas State University in the
Grain Science department while Shirley kept their home, raising Linda and her
sisters, Kay and Barbara and brother Kenneth.&nbsp;
Linda attended four different grade schools and three different high
schools between her family’s time in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Manhattan, Kansas
and Springfield, Illinois.

Like her parents, Linda met her husband, Steven Mosier at
Kansas State University.&nbsp; They married on
June 5, 1965, at Danforth Chapel on the KSU campus. Their wedding party
included Linda’s sisters, Kay and Barbara and Steve’s twin brother, Stan, as
well as lifelong friend, David Leopold. &nbsp;Linda obtained a degree in elementary
education and went on to teach first grade in Aurora, Nebraska. &nbsp;Steve, a veterinarian, served in the U.S. Army
Veterinary Corps from 1967-1969, and he and Linda were stationed in St. James,
Minnesota during this time. &nbsp;St. James
also served as the birthplace of their first son, Darren (DOB and DOD
10-20-1967) and first daughter, Karen.

Linda and Steve moved to Hays, Kansas in 1970 in order to be
closer to both sets of parents; Linda’s in Manhattan and Steve’s in Hoxie. &nbsp;Their daughter Kristen was born in Hays in
1971. Daughters Karla and Kayleen were born in Russell in 1974 and 1976,
respectively.

In addition to supporting Steve in his over fifty years of
service in veterinary medicine, Linda was elected to the Hays School Board for
12 years. &nbsp;She was nominated to the State
of Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board for six years. She was an
entrepreneur as owner of The Gathering Place, a gift shop featuring Kansas
artists and items. &nbsp;She and Steve
co-sponsored a Special Olympics basketball team in Hays for over twenty years. &nbsp;Linda and Steve also supported the annual
Festival of Faith in Hays. This interdenominational worship gathering was
Linda’s favorite event.&nbsp; Linda was a
devoted mother, wife, daughter, sister, and friend.&nbsp; She saw and believed the best in others at
all times.&nbsp; One of her greatest legacies
was captured by her grandson who said of her, “It’s always a good idea to spend
time with Grandma Linda because you leave a better person.”

Linda’s beloved place was Estes Park, Colorado, where her
parents built a rustic cabin still visited by family today. &nbsp;Linda instilled her love for this area in her
daughters and grandchildren; Karen, Kristen and Karla reside in Estes Park
along with grandchildren Ethan, Decker, Isaac, Ben, and Hannah, all born and
raised there. Her favorite books were The Bible and The Secret Garden. &nbsp;Her favorite scripture was Psalm 23. &nbsp;The Goodness of God and Forever in Blue Jeans
were her favorite songs. &nbsp;Her favorite words
were:&nbsp; faith, hope, love, grace, wisdom,
healing, better, forgiveness and smiling, all of which she embodied.

Survivors include four daughters:
Karen Nicholson and husband Blake, Kristen Hill and husband Christian, Karla
DuBois and husband Justin, all of Estes Park, Colorado, and Kayleen Geist and
husband Garrett of Wilson, two sisters, Kay Taylor and brother-in-law Chris of
Fort Collins, Colorado and Barbara Pratt of Estes Park, Colorado, brother
Kenneth and sister-in-law Robin of Fruita, Colorado, five grandchildren: Blake
“Decker”, Ben, and Hannah Nicholson, Ethan and Isaac Hill, as well as nieces
and nephews.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son
Darren and husband Steve, and brother-in-law Stan Pratt.

A gathering to remember, reflect,
and share in the life of Linda will be from 2:30 pm until 4:30 on Friday,
September 12, 2025 at Professor’s Classic Sandwich Shop, 521 E. 11th
Street in Hays.&nbsp; Family Inurnment will be
in the Hoxie Cemetery at a future date.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Fort Hays State Women's Soccer kicked off the 2025 regular season on the road Friday (Sept. 5), falling 3-1 to Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Mo. Tiger newcomer Payton Porter notched the lone goal for FHSU.

Rockhurst got off to a fast start, scoring twice in the first eight minutes, both goals from Caitlyn Smith. The Hawks took that 2-0 lead into halftime, outshooting the Tigers 9-4 in the first half.

Fort Hays State cut the lead in half early in the second when Porter scored off passes from Sydney Cotter and Ryan McCabe in the 49th minute. However, Rockhurst quickly responded just over a minute later when Anna Lantz found the net, assisted by Quinn Conroy and Maya Wallace, restoring its two-goal lead.

Hadley Ostrander recorded nine saves in her debut at Fort Hays State. Cotter led the Tigers with three shot attempts.

Fort Hays State hosts its first home match against Northwestern Oklahoma State on Sunday, September 7, set to begin at 3 p.m. in Hays, Kansas at FHSU Soccer Stadium.

Hays has a 40% chance of showers this afternoon. The forecast is for partly cloudy skies and highs in the 70s during the weekend.

A slight chance of rain returns Monday and Monday night with a high of 79.

Highs in the mid- to upper 80s are forecast for next week, according to the National Weather Service.

Commissioners heard from Jesse Rohr, public works director, about recommended abatements for the properties at

The property owner on Douglas Drive has also been cited for inoperable vehicles.

Commissioners agreed to move the nuisance abatements forward for a vote at the Sept. 11 meeting, unless progress has been made to clean up the properties.

During comments at the end of the meeting, Mayor Sandy Jacobs called for a discussion at an upcoming work session about potentially changing Fort and Ash Streets from one-way to two-way traffic in light of the upcoming changes in location for Hays Middle School and the new police station/municipal court building.

Nuisance abatements to move forward for a vote next week by Hays City Commission

HESSTON – The TMP-Marian girls golf team and sophomore Brynn
Schoepf brought home the top spots at the Hesston golf tournament Thursday.

Schoepf turned in a 14-over 83, securing the first-place
finish by one shot over second place.

TMP’s Jenna Brull finished in a tie for 6th with
an 89.

Emma Wasinger was tied for 16th (96) and Ava
Schumacher (105).

As a team, the Monarchs combined for a 373, eight shots
better than second-place Hesston.

A former Kansas Highway Patrol Captain has accepted the role as the new WaKeeney Police Chief.

Travis Phillips started in his new role on Wednesday.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/5abb4af0-7321-4b8c-b418-d359a0a15076">Phillips of WaKeeney retired from the Kansas Highway Patrol in August after serving more than 30 years.</a>

The Wakeeney Police Chief has been filled on an interim basis by Trego County Sheriff Edward Pritchard since March, when the former chief, Michael Allen Romero, was put on administrative leave and ultimately removed as police chief.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/e54e5cf4-edea-4c8c-ae55-6488ac8a7116">Romero was charged in May&nbsp;with crimes of mistreatment of suspects after an investigation by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.</a>

A status conference is scheduled in the district court on that case on Sept. 16.

Phillips said overcoming the public's view of the department based on its recent past will be his biggest challenge.

"My biggest goal is to bring public perception of the Wakeeney Police Department to where it should be," he said, "So it can be something they can be proud of and rely on and know when they call us, the job is going to get done.

"It's going to take us doing our job and serving the public to our best ability to bring back the trust, I think that was possibly lost through negative law enforcement."

He said the biggest mistake he could make was implementing significant changes immediately.

"I need to settle into the job and see where we can serve the public better and more efficiently," he said.

The department has five full-time positions, including the chief, but one of those positions is vacant. In addition, the department employs two part-time officers and a community service officer.

Phillips said the vacant full-time position will be filled after January during the new budget year.

Phillips earned a criminal justice degree from Fort Hays State University in 1994.

He began his law enforcement career in 1991 with the Hays Police Department, before transitioning to the highway patrol in 1994. Phillips rose through the ranks of the KHP, serving as sergeant, master trooper, lieutenant and eventually being promoted to captain six years ago.

As a captain, Phillips oversaw an 18-county region. Phillips said he wanted to return to law enforcement because he missed being a trooper and the interactions he had with the community.

"As a trooper, there was a more localized area that I was in charge of being their protector," he said. "As a police chief, it brings me full circle and brings it home and allows me to take care of the city of WaKeeney and be in the community more.

After serving with the Kansas Highway Patrol, Phillips said he will have to change gears to perform municipal work.

"It's not a bad thing," he said. "I'm excited to learn a new trade as a police chief."

Former trooper takes role as new WaKeeney Police Chief

The Healing Hearts Grief Support Group will have a special guest speaker at its next meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18. 

The meeting will be in the new Hays Senior Center location inside the Schmidt Community Center, 2510 Canterbury Dr. Doors will open at 6:15 p.m. Attendees are asked to use the south entrance. The meeting is free and open to the public.

Kenneth Windholz, a clinical psychotherapist, will speak on the topic “Visitation Dreams.” Windholz teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in the Psychology Department at Fort Hays State University. He has authored book chapters and articles on neuropsychology. He has served as the president of the Kansas Association of Masters in Psychology, is the current president of the NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Kansas Board of Directors, and serves as the faculty sponsor for NAMI on the FHSU campus.

Dr. Kate McGonigal, the Healing Hearts group facilitator, said Windholz’s appearance is a celebration of the “new beginning” for Healing Hearts. It did not meet while the Senior Center was relocating to its new home. The group will continue meeting at 6:30 the third Thursday night of each month in its new home, she said.

Healing Hearts is a grief support group for adults who have lost a loved one. McGonigal said, “We want anyone who is experiencing grief to join us for one meeting, or for however meetings they wish, as they navigate the road to coping with the death of someone they loved. We focus on healing and coping from close personal losses.”

McGonigal is an associate professor of sociology at Fort Hays State University, where she has taught since 2004. She teaches the Death &amp; Dying class at FHSU, with an emphasis on caregivers and caregiving.&nbsp;

PUEBLO, Colo. — In a wild and thrilling contest decided by a dramatic finish, Fort Hays State knocked off No. 5/6 ranked CSU Pueblo 36-35 on Thursday night at the CSU Pueblo ThunderBowl. Down 15 early, the Tigers put together a furious rally just before halftime to get within one, then battled their way past the Thunderwolves at the 1:47 mark of the fourth quarter. A blocked extra point by Taderian Partee with 27 seconds remaining preserved the FHSU lead by one point. A recovered onside kick secured the win.

CSU Pueblo is the highest ranked AFCA Top 25 team the Tigers have ever defeated in their NCAA Division II history. The previous high marks were wins over No. 8 Pittsburg State in 2014 and No. 8 Northwest Missouri State in 2017.

After falling to Angelo State the week prior, the Tigers picked up a split of their non-conference games against nationally ranked teams before entering the always grueling MIAA schedule that lies ahead. It could also prove to be a big win for the Tigers within Super Region 4 once the dust settles at the end of the season, but there is still plenty of football to play.

The win gave Chris Brown his 90th win leading the Tigers. He is already the all-time wins leader at FHSU and this season makes him the longest-tenured coach in the history of football at FHSU.

CSU Pueblo held a 12-7 lead by the end of the first quarter. FHSU struggled to slow down the CSU Pueblo aerial attack early as quarterback Roman Fuller went 9-for-9 with 101 passing yards in the frame. FHSU's score of the quarter occurred when Caleb Heavner connected with Ethan Hilliman for a nine-yard touchdown, completing a nine-play, 75-yard drive. The Thunderwolves were responsible for 35 of those yards with penalties, which aided a sputtering Tiger offense early.

The Thunderwolves extended their lead to 15 eventually in the second quarter with a field goal and then Fuller's second touchdown pass of the game. But, the Tiger offense came alive in the final three minutes before the break to close the gap to 22-21. Heavner led the charge with two touchdown passes, including a thrilling 43-yard strike to Cale Cormaney with 1:39 left in the half. Moments later a key strip sack by Gaven Haselhorst and fumble recovery by Jaden Barker set up another scoring opportunity. The Tigers lined up for a field goal inside the CSU Pueblo 10-yard line, but Wyatt Spexarth had to take off with the ball after a troubled snap and found Noah McDoulett for another touchdown on what looked like a fake field goal with no time remaining, stunning the Thunderwolves with an unexpected play.

The defenses tightened up in the third quarter and both teams went scoreless, setting up a dramatic fourth quarter. CSU Pueblo broke the second half stalemate with a touchdown just seconds into the quarter and pushed its lead to 29-21. But a pivotal moment was when Heavner pivotal found Tariq Logan for a 59-yard pass, which eventually set the stage for a Travis Dixon two-yard touchdown run with 12:03 remaining. Heavner found Cormaney for a well designed 2-point conversion play, knotting the game at 29-29.

CSU Pueblo's next drive reached the FHSU 36-yard line, but a pass breakup by Darell Jones created a turnover on downs in a 4th-and-3 situation. The Tigers got the ball back with 8:53 and Heavner went to work, willing the Tigers toward the endzone with his legs. He scampered for four first downs, helping the Tigers trim the clock all the way inside two minutes. Dixon then pushed the Tigers into the lead with a 10-yard touchdown run with 1:47 remaining. David Arriaga knocked through the crucial extra point. Rain was coming down steady during the Tiger drive and unfortunately lightning showed up in the area, delaying the game for about 40 minutes.

Out of the break, CSU Pueblo marched down the field and reached the endzone with 27 seconds remaining as Fuller notched his third touchdown pass of the game, this time from just two yards out. But, after missing their first two PAT tries of the game (one kick, one 2-point try), Taderian Partee created the third failure of the night by the Thunderwolves blocking Evan Lyons' extra point attempt to preserve the one-point lead and Tiger win after an onside kick recovery moments later.

Heavner finished with 296 yards of total offense, going 19-of-27 passing for 226 yards, while leading the team in rushing with 70 yards. Logan led the Tigers in receiving yards with 90, while Ethan Hilliman had a team-high four catches. Dixon pounded out crucial yards on the ground for the Tigers when they needed it, finishing with 57 yards. John Johnson was a rock for the Tigers on defense all night, finishing with 13 tackles, while Gavin Meyers picked up eight and Jaxon Kolzow had seven.

Fuller led the Thunderwolves with 34 completions on 45 attempts, amassing 351 passing yards, while also rushing for a touchdown. Andrew Cook had 90 receiving yards on six catches. On defense Gary Seidenberger led with nine tackles and one sack.

Both FHSU and CSU Pueblo are now 1-1 overall on the season. The Thunderwolves go play their other non-conference game next week at Central Missouri after picking up a blowout win within conference play in their season opener.

Looking ahead, Fort Hays State opens up MIAA play by hosting Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday, September 13 in Hays at Lewis Field Stadium. The game kicks off at 7 p.m.

FHSU struggled to slow down the CSU Pueblo aerial attack early as quarterback Roman Fuller went 9-for-9 with 101 passing yards in the frame. FHSU's score of the quarter occurred when Caleb Heavner connected with Ethan Hilliman for a nine-yard touchdown, completing a nine-play, 75-yard drive. The Thunderwolves were responsible for 35 of those yards with penalties, which aided a sputtering Tiger offense early.The Thunderwolves extended their lead to 15 eventually in the second quarter with a field goal and then Fuller's second touchdown pass of the game. But, the Tiger offense came alive in the final three minutes before the break to close the gap to 22-21. Heavner led the charge with two touchdown passes, including a thrilling 43-yard strike to Cale Cormaney with 1:39 left in the half. Moments later a key strip sack by Gaven Haselhorst and fumble recovery by Jaden Barker set up another scoring opportunity. The Tigers got the ball back with 8:53 and Heavner went to work, willing the Tigers toward the endzone with his legs. He scampered for four first downs, helping the Tigers trim the clock all the way inside two minutes. Dixon then pushed the Tigers into the lead with a 10-yard touchdown run with 1:47 remaining. David Arriaga knocked through the crucial extra point. The No. 23 ranked Tigers picked up their second-straight win over the Hawks after winning 2-1 last year in the season opener in Hays.

The Thunderwolves, ranked No. 5 in the AFCA and No. 6 in the D2Football.com Top 25 Polls, enter this game at 1-0, while the Tigers enter at 0-1. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. (6 p.m. MT) in Pueblo, Colo. 

CSU Pueblo moved up one spot this week in the D2Football.com Top 25 Poll, while FHSU dropped out after holding the No. 20 ranking in the preseason. CSU Pueblo won its season opener over South Dakota Mines 43-0 in a conference matchup, while Fort Hays State fell 28-7 at home to then No. 13/12 ranked Angelo State. The Rams moved up to No. 10 in both top 25 polls this week after their win over the Tigers.

Fort Hays State and CSU Pueblo are meeting in football for the first time since 1978, so this will be their first-ever meeting as members of NCAA Division II. CSU Pueblo, then known as Southern Colorado, discontinued its football program following the 1984 season. The sport did not come back until 2008, after FHSU had left the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in 2006. CSU Pueblo has enjoyed a successful run in football since reinstating the program in its NCAA Division II era. The Thunderwolves won the NCAA Division II national title in 2014.

The Thunderwolves hold a 9-7 advantage in their all-time series with Fort Hays State. The last meeting occurred in 1978. The CSU Pueblo Thunderwolves were then known as the Southern Colorado Indians. The school changed its mascot in the 1990s to the Thunderwolves and then its school name in 2003. CSU Pueblo won that 1978 contest 29-6 in Hays, which extended their current win streak in the series to four games. The last three games have been non-conference games between the school, but seven-straight meetings from 1969-1975 were conference contests, the first three in the RMAC and then the next five in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC). FHSU moved to the Central States Intercollegiate Conference in 1976.

This will be the first meeting between the teams in Pueblo since 1977. CSU Pueblo won the last two meetings between the schools in Pueblo. FHSU's last win in Pueblo was its last win in the series overall in 1974 by a score of 28-13. This will be the first time CSU Pueblo meets an MIAA opponent in its NCAA Division II history. The Thunderwolves will be meeting MIAA schools in back-to-back weeks since they head to Central Missouri the following week.

Ethan Hilliman had the only Tiger touchdown of the game, a highlight reel 22-yard leaping reception on a pass from Caleb Heavner. HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs committed four turnovers and
dropped their first game of the season Thursday night to the Russell Broncos
29-22.

TMP jumped out to an early lead, scoring on its first
possession of the game. Quarterback Carson Liles found running back Jackson
Gillespie for a 49-yard catch and run to put the Monarchs up 7-0, with five and
a half minutes left in the first quarter. 

After their first possession stalled in TMP territory, Russell
was able to get their ground game going on their second possession of the game
and answered with a two-yard touchdown pass for a 7-7 game with just under 90
seconds left in the first quarter.

On the Monarchs’ second offensive possession of the game,
they took advantage of a short field thanks to a good kickoff return from Grant
Nehls. 

TMP started the drive at the Russell 45-yard line and on
fourth and short, Gillespie broke free for 26 yards, setting up a goal-to-go
situation that resulted in a two-yard Liles touchdown, putting TMP up 14-7.

The Broncos had a bad snap and TMP recovered the fumble deep
in Russell territory, but two plays later, they gave it right back on one of
four turnovers, an interception.

The Broncos took advantage of the second chance and capped
off their next offensive possession with a 49-yard touchdown pass, tying the
game at 14.

The Monarchs quarterback, Carson Liles, threw his second
