Manhattan won the team title by 30 strokes over Bishop Carroll. The Indians Maddie Myers own the individual title with a 2-under par 68.

⛳ HHS girls seventh at Salina Central Invite

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – Fort Hays State Men's Golf tied for 13th place as a team at The Mule, hosted by the University of Central Missouri, September 8-9. Cooper Scheck and Jordan McCaslin were the top finishers, tying for 19th individually.

The Tigers were tied for third as a team after the first round when they shot 285 as a team. They followed that with rounds of 292 and 308 to finish.

Scheck's second round was his best of the tournament, shooting a 1-under par 69. He shot a 2-over 72 in the first round and a 6-over 76 in the final round. McCaslin had a big opening round and led the tournament after a 5-under 65. However, he followed with rounds of 74 and 78 and matched Scheck's 7-over total of 217. McCaslin had 11 birdies for the tournament, including seven in the first round, while Scheck had five.

Chutithep Rungpajchim shot rounds of 71, 77 and 75 to tie for 52nd individually. He had three birdies throughout the tournament. Grant McAtee shot rounds of 77, 72, and 82 to tie for 85th, carding five birdies. Colby Hays shot rounds of 78, 79, 79 and had four birdies, finishing in 97th.

Central Oklahoma won the team title by 14 strokes, running away at 14-under par as a team. The Bronchos as a team were 10-under par in the second round. Tournament host Central Missouri finished second at even par as a team. There was a 26-shot gap to the third-place team, Arkansas-Fort Smith. Nick Canales of Central Oklahoma won the tournament individually at 3-under par overall.

⛳ FHSU men tie for 13th at season-opening event in Missouri

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State Men's Soccer moved up one spot in the latest United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll, released on Tuesday. The Tigers are ranked No. 22 in the latest poll after a 1-0-1 start to the 2025 season.

The No. 22 Tigers will face No. 3 ranked CSU Pueblo in Hays this Thursday night (Sept. 11) at 6 p.m. The Thunderwolves were a national semifinalist last year and a national finalist the two years prior to that. FHSU won the last meeting with CSU Pueblo, a 2-1 decision in Hays back in 2022, which was the first of the two years the Thunderwolves eventually played in the national title match.

Following their first home contest of the season on Thursday, the Tigers head to Columbia, Mo. on Sunday for a neutral site match with Thomas More (Ky.).

Fort Hays State is one of two GAC members among the top 25 of the poll, joining Rogers State. The Hillcats are also 1-0-1 on the season and share the No. 11 ranking with Felician University. Newman is among the receiving votes list.

⚽ Tiger men move up a notch in United Soccer Coaches Poll

St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 2900 Canal Blvd., Hays, will have a garage sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13.

The event will be held both inside and outside the church. 

Pastor Ben Houchen said proceeds will go the church’s Feeding Hays ministry and to the church’s youth group.

St. Michael’s Episcopal Church to have garage sale Saturday

Jerry Lee Byrd, age 77, of Beeler, KS, passed away on
September 4, 2025, at HaysMed in Hays, KS. Jerry was born on June 13, 1948, in
Emporia, KS. He was the son of George Robert (Bob) Byrd and Dorothy Mae
Scharff. He met the love of his life, Linda Jane Selves and they were united in
marriage in Hutchinson, KS on June 3, 1968.

Jerry was a lifelong rancher, cattle buyer and land trader.
He had a strong work ethic. He enjoyed life, believed in God and loved his
family. Everything he did was to provide for his family. His grandchildren were
his pride and joy. Jerry was happiest when he was around family and friends. He
also loved to play pitch, watch sports and ride horses.&nbsp;

He is survived by his wife, Linda J. (Selves) Byrd; his
children Traci Scott and husband Roger of Burdett, KS, Kristi Williams and
husband Chad of Victoria, KS and John Byrd and wife Tiffany of Beeler, KS; his
grandchildren Tyler Ralls, Payton Rice and his wife Kristen, Jake Byrd, Kade
Scott, Kylee Scott, Shelby Scott, and Hazen Byrd.&nbsp;

Memorial services will be on Friday September 12, 2025, at
4:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Ness City, KS.&nbsp;

Friends can sign the book at Fitzgerald Funeral Home on
Thursday, September 11, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Jerry Lee Byrd

Priscilla F. Rorstrom of Hays, Kansas passed away peacefully
in her sleep on Saturday, August 23, 2025 at Via Christi Village.&nbsp; She was 88 years old.&nbsp; 

Priscilla was born on March 26, 1937 in Boston,
Massachusetts, the daughter of Ralph Irving Freeman and Ella Brewster (Cornish)
Freeman.&nbsp; Priscilla grew up on Cape Cod
in the town of Sandwich, Massachusetts at Bay View Farm, a property that had
been in her family for generations.&nbsp; As a
child she was surrounded by extended family.&nbsp;
Along with her parents and younger brother, Irving, various aunts,
uncles and grandparents also shared the house at different times.&nbsp; The home was the center of frequent family gatherings
involving the greater extended family from nearby towns on the Cape and beyond.&nbsp; There are numerous stories of childhood
adventures with her brother and cousins at the beach and on the farm.&nbsp; Her high school class had only six class
members; therefore, she played flute in the local Shawme Orchestra.&nbsp; She was also active in the Camp Fire Girls
and was the scorekeeper for the school basketball team.

After high school, Priscilla attended Framingham State
Teachers College, where she graduated in 1959 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Home
Economics.&nbsp; After college she worked with
special needs children at the Riverview School in Sandwich from 1959 to 1960.&nbsp; On October 15, 1960 she was united in
marriage to Eric G. Rorstrom at the Federated Church in Sandwich.&nbsp; Eric and her brother were fraternity brothers
at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, which facilitated their meeting.&nbsp; After marriage, the couple rented a small
house in Holden, Massachusetts.&nbsp; Shortly
thereafter, Eric was called into the Army Reserves at the onset of the Berlin
Wall Crisis.&nbsp; She gave birth to their
first child, James, in August of 1961 while Eric was stationed at Fort Dix, New
Jersey.&nbsp; Subsequently, she returned to
the Cape with her baby to live with her parents in Sandwich until Eric was
discharged from the Reserves following the second Berlin Wall crisis in 1962.&nbsp; Being able to now resume a normal life, Eric
pursued his career as a mechanical engineer at the Riley Stoker Corporation in
Worcester, Massachusetts and they purchased a home in Holden, Massachusetts.&nbsp; Priscilla chose to continue as a stay at home
mom and was involved with the choir at the Holden Baptist Church.&nbsp; She gave birth to their second child, John,
in 1965.

In 1967, Eric began employment with the Pratt &amp; Whitney
Aircraft Corporation and the family relocated to Marlborough, Connecticut.&nbsp; They became members of the Marlborough
Congregational Church and then, in 1978, became members of Trinity Covenant
Church in Manchester, Connecticut.&nbsp; They
were active in the choir, Bible studies, prayer groups and served in various
leadership capacities at both churches.&nbsp; Priscilla
was also active in the local PTA and was a room mother for both boys as they
progressed through elementary school.&nbsp; She
enjoyed flower gardening and was an active member of the Marlborough Garden
Club for many years, receiving awards for her flower arrangements at the annual
house and garden tour.&nbsp; She was highly
skilled at sewing, embroidery, knitting and crocheting.&nbsp; She utilized her skills to produce much of
her own clothing, sport coats for Eric, costumes for the boys, Scandinavian
style sweaters and decorative items.&nbsp; Priscilla’s
love of music resulted in her embracing the recorder in the mid 1970’s.&nbsp; After becoming proficient at the instrument,
she joined the Lake Consort.&nbsp; The group
performed their repertoire of music from the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque
periods at churches and other venues into the late 1980’s.&nbsp; These years were also marked by the annual
family camping trips to the White Mountains and, in 1978, a month long motor
home adventure tour of the U.S.

In 1979, with the oldest son entering college, Priscilla
decided to return to work and took a position as the secretary in the high
school audio visual department.&nbsp; She
remained there until 1988, at which point she became a secretary at Trinity
Covenant Church and remained in that capacity until retirement.&nbsp; In the following years she enjoyed continuing
in her many activities and frequent visits to the family homestead on the Cape.


She also enjoyed traveling with Eric to Maine, Prince Edward
Island and England as well as trips to see her sons and their families in
Kansas and New Hampshire.&nbsp; Grandchildren
had begun to arrive a few years earlier, in 1995.&nbsp; As this next generation grew, she enjoyed
sharing her faith, wisdom, skills, life stories and extensive family history
with them. 

Throughout their 55 years in Marlborough, Priscilla was
known for her love of hospitality and entertaining - blessing family and
friends with sumptuous meals at their home, contributing to church suppers,
making meals for shut-ins and the bereaved, as well as welcoming new families
to the neighborhood with a fresh-baked loaf of bread and other goodies.

In 2022, Priscilla moved with her husband Eric to Hays, Kansas
to be closer to her family.&nbsp; In Hays they
have been involved with the North Oak Community Church and have enjoyed making
friends in the church and community.&nbsp; 

Priscilla is survived by her husband Eric of Hays, two sons
- James Rorstrom and wife Jane of Hays and John Rorstrom and wife Theresa of
Austin, TX, her brother - Irving Freeman and wife Carolyn of Sandwich, MA, four
grandchildren - Katarina Clinton and husband Mark of Southern Pines, NC, Hans
Rorstrom and wife Hannah of Claremore, OK, Eric Rorstrom of Kansas City, MO,
and Carl Rorstrom of Lawrence, KS.&nbsp; There
are three great grandchildren - Hope, Svea, and Cathan. She was preceded in
death by her parents.

A memorial service will be at 2:30 pm on Saturday, September
13, 2025 at North Oak Community Church with Pastor Dave Kumer
officiating.&nbsp; The family will receive friends from 1:30 pm until service
time at the church.&nbsp; Private family inurnment will be in Spring Hill
Cemetery in Sandwich, Massachusetts.&nbsp;

Hays, KS&nbsp; 67601.&nbsp; Write: “Memorial – Priscilla” on the memo

at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, which facilitated their meeting.&nbsp; After marriage, the couple rented a small
house in Holden, Massachusetts.&nbsp; Shortly
thereafter, Eric was called into the Army Reserves at the onset of the Berlin
Wall Crisis.&nbsp; She gave birth to their
first child, James, in August of 1961 while Eric was stationed at Fort Dix, New
Jersey.&nbsp; Subsequently, she returned to
the Cape with her baby to live with her parents in Sandwich until Eric was
discharged from the Reserves following the second Berlin Wall crisis in 1962.&nbsp; Being able to now resume a normal life, Eric
pursued his career as a mechanical engineer at the Riley Stoker Corporation in
Worcester, Massachusetts and they purchased a home in Holden, Massachusetts.&nbsp; Priscilla chose to continue as a stay at home
mom and was involved with the choir at the Holden Baptist Church.&nbsp; She gave birth to their second child, John,
in 1965.In 1967, Eric began employment with the Pratt &amp; Whitney
Aircraft Corporation and the family relocated to Marlborough, Connecticut.&nbsp; They became members of the Marlborough
Congregational Church and then, in 1978, became members of Trinity Covenant
Church in Manchester, Connecticut.&nbsp; They
were active in the choir, Bible studies, prayer groups and served in various
leadership capacities at both churches.&nbsp; Priscilla
was also active in the local PTA and was a room mother for both boys as they
progressed through elementary school.&nbsp; She
enjoyed flower gardening and was an active member of the Marlborough Garden
Club for many years, receiving awards for her flower arrangements at the annual
house and garden tour.&nbsp; She was highly
skilled at sewing, embroidery, knitting and crocheting.&nbsp; She utilized her skills to produce much of
her own clothing, sport coats for Eric, costumes for the boys, Scandinavian
style sweaters and decorative items.&nbsp; Priscilla’s
love of music resulted in her embracing the recorder in the mid 1970’s.&nbsp; After becoming proficient at the instrument,
she joined the Lake Consort.&nbsp; The group
performed their repertoire of music from the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque
periods at churches and other venues into the late 1980’s.&nbsp; These years were also marked by the annual
family camping trips to the White Mountains and, in 1978, a month long motor
home adventure tour of the U.S.In 1979, with the oldest son entering college, Priscilla
decided to return to work and took a position as the secretary in the high
school audio visual department.&nbsp; She
remained there until 1988, at which point she became a secretary at Trinity
Covenant Church and remained in that capacity until retirement.&nbsp; In the following years she enjoyed continuing
in her many activities and frequent visits to the family homestead on the Cape.
She also enjoyed traveling with Eric to Maine, Prince Edward
Island and England as well as trips to see her sons and their families in
Kansas and New Hampshire.&nbsp; Grandchildren
had begun to arrive a few years earlier, in 1995.&nbsp; As this next generation grew, she enjoyed
sharing her faith, wisdom, skills, life stories and extensive family history
with them. Throughout their 55 years in Marlborough, Priscilla was
known for her love of hospitality and entertaining - blessing family and
friends with sumptuous meals at their home, contributing to church suppers,
making meals for shut-ins and the bereaved, as well as welcoming new families
to the neighborhood with a fresh-baked loaf of bread and other goodies.In 2022, Priscilla moved with her husband Eric to Hays, Kansas
to be closer to her family.&nbsp; In Hays they
have been involved with the North Oak Community Church and have enjoyed making
friends in the church and community.&nbsp; Priscilla is survived by her husband Eric of Hays, two sons
- James Rorstrom and wife Jane of Hays and John Rorstrom and wife Theresa of
Austin, TX, her brother - Irving Freeman and wife Carolyn of Sandwich, MA, four
grandchildren - Katarina Clinton and husband Mark of Southern Pines, NC, Hans
Rorstrom and wife Hannah of Claremore, OK, Eric Rorstrom of Kansas City, MO,
and Carl Rorstrom of Lawrence, KS.&nbsp; There
are three great grandchildren - Hope, Svea, and Cathan. She was preceded in
death by her parents.A memorial service will be at 2:30 pm on Saturday, September
13, 2025 at North Oak Community Church with Pastor Dave Kumer
officiating.&nbsp; The family will receive friends from 1:30 pm until service
time at the church.&nbsp; Private family inurnment will be in Spring Hill
Cemetery in Sandwich, Massachusetts.&nbsp; In lieu of flowers, memorial
donations are suggested sent to: North Oak Community Church, 3000 Oak St.,
Hays, KS&nbsp; 67601.&nbsp; Write: “Memorial – Priscilla” on the memo

The Ellis County Commission approved the 2026 budget with a mill levy increase of 1.96 mills during its Tuesday meeting.

A public hearing provided taxpayers the chance to give input on the general fund and fire district, both of which exceed the revenue-neutral rate. The budget process began in March.

The general fund mill levy increase will bring the total general fund expenditures to $34.7 million.&nbsp;The mill levy increase will require a homeowner with a house appraised at $100,000 to pay $22 more per year, and a homeowner with a house appraised at $200,000 to pay $45 more per year.

Several residents urged the commission to remain revenue-neutral, warning that tax burdens would be imposed on homeowners and businesses. Resident Mark Hess said the commission was breaking campaign promises to keep spending in check.

"It is imperative for the commission to look back at the budget and to make some of those tougher calls that you guys are elected to do," Hess said. "True leadership means honoring your commitments, holding every budget line to performance standards and having the discipline to say no when necessary."

Resident John Pyle described himself as an “overtaxed citizen,” saying that his property taxes increased from $3,600 to $5,800 over the last five years. He shared valuation numbers and suggested commissioners look at alternative revenue sources.

Darin Myers, county administrator, said the mill levy increase was necessary to prepare for possible federal grant reductions. Commissioner Nathan Leiker emphasized the commission devoted significant time to identifying areas where spending could be reduced.

"We as commissioners spent one day alone, almost 13 hours, going through each department, item by item, justifying costs and adjustments," Leiker said.

Myers said about $770,000 was trimmed during a budget meeting, but some items were later reinstated. Commissioner Neal Younger said while county spending is high, it supports 18 services.

"Whether it be an ambulance, road and bridge, noxious weeds, mental health, that's where a lot of money goes to," Younger said.

Adam Pray,&nbsp; a developer, complimented the commission's efforts but recommended exploring sales taxes to help shift some of the costs to visitors.

Personnel policy change for retiree insurance

The county approved a personnel policy change regarding retiree health insurance, as mandated by a Kansas statute.

The law requires local governments that offer health insurance also to make the coverage available to retirees and their dependents, provided they apply within 30 days of retirement, have at least 10 years of employment with a local government and retired after Dec. 31, 1988.&nbsp;

Coverage ends when the retiree reaches 65 years old, premiums are not paid, or the retiree gains coverage under another employer's plan.

New electronic health record for Ellis County Health Department

The county health department received approval to purchase a new electronic health record system, replacing an outdated one. The five-year purchase price of about $77,100 will be prepaid using Workforce Development Grant funds and will have no impact on the general fund.&nbsp;

A homeowner received approval from the commission to use a county easement in Commerce Estates to build a private road that would provide access to his property. The homeowner will be responsible for funding, building and maintaining the road.

GOODLAND – The TMP-Marian girls' golf team finished second
at the Goodland Invitational at Sugar Hills Golf Club.

The Monarchs combined to shoot a team score of 401. They
finished 43 shots behind the team champion, Goodland. 

They were four shots better than third-place Syracuse. Colby
finished fourth.

TMP sophomore Brynn Schoepf finished with a 25-over 96 and
finished fifth.

Ava Schumacher shot a 100 and finished tied for sixth.

Jenna Brull was tied for 11th with a 102, and one
shot back and tied for 13th was Emma Wasinger.

The Monarchs will travel to Larned for their next varsity
action on Sept. 18.

Hays police officers swap squad cars for bicycles, gaining a new view of the streets they patrol.

Hays Police Patrol Corporal Alex Broadway said the bike division focuses on community policing, mainly downtown and around Fort Hays State University.

"We're preventing crimes in and of themselves from us being there," Broadway said. "I like to think that because we're preventing those college parties from overgrowing, we would have prevented college kids from getting overly intoxicated, stumbling out and getting struck by a vehicle."

Bike officers undergo a&nbsp;40-hour training program through the International Police Mountain Bike Association. Dakota Reese, Hays Police patrol sergeant, said this prepares the division to handle any situation.

"The main job of bike patrol at this time of year is in our college areas... you've got 2,000 kids out, there's beer cans, we're hopping curves and moving around illegally parked cars, so that creates its own obstacles," Reese said.

The bike division is most active on weekends, during special events and in warm weather to boost police visibility.

"People are more willing just to come up and chat with us. We're a lot more approachable to members of the community," Broadway said.

Broadway and Reese will participate in Pedal Patrol in the Park at 11 a.m. Sept. 13 at Aubel-Bickle Optimist Park, 30th and Sherman Ave., where they will share safety tips and encourage safe riding in Hays.

"We're hoping for a good time and to have some positive contacts with people in the community," Broadway said.

The event will feature an electric scooter raffle tied to a brief safety presentation, a kids’ safety course, snacks, food trucks and a DJ. A limited number of free helmets will be given away.

Broadway said the bike patrol rides in colder weather with jackets and gloves, but stays off the streets in rain, snow or slippery conditions. Officers typically cover 10 to 15 miles per shift.

According to Broadway, bike patrol officers most often respond to underage drinking, fights and traffic-related incidents. When an arrest is required, a patrol car is called in for transport.

"We can see and hear so much more because we're out there. It's not uncommon for bike officers to catch a DUI and process it," Broadway said.

Broadway said riding a bike does not limit an officer’s ability to serve, as shifts usually finish in a patrol car toward the end of the night. He added the best part of the job is directly engaging with the community.

"Interacting with people who are supportive of what we do, those are some of my favorite moments," he said.

The Hays Police Department launched "Ride Right Hays," a new safety campaign to educate residents on the proper and lawful use of UTVs, ATVs, golf cars, scooters and bicycles.

K-State Research and Extension Cottonwood District will be hosting our annual make and take pizza night in honor of National Family Day on September 29 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at our office located at 601 Main Street in Hays.

Family Day is a national effort to promote family dinners. 

Research shows family dinners are a great way to reduce youth substance abuse and other risky behaviors as reported by The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Colombia University. 

Not only are family dinners a way to bring families together but young children can also learn valuable life skills.

 Cooking is an important life skill for children to learn before they grow up and are out on their own. Knowing how to plan menus, budget for food, and follow a recipe provides many skills that will help children as they become adults. 

Knowing how to cook meals versus heating something up from a box can also aid our children’s health. Processed foods often have many added ingredients that can lead to health issues. 

Having children help in the kitchen teaches them math skills and to follow directions. 

When children help prepare meals, they tend to have more motivation to eat the meal as well. If they have taken part in preparation, they are more likely to try new foods and recipes. This can be particularly helpful for picky eaters!

Kpreps.com released its updated high school football rankings ahead of Week 2. Several area schools are earning recognition after season-opening wins.

In Class 5A, Hays High is ranked fourth after their big road win at previously 6A No. 1 Derby. Great Bend is ranked third in Class 5A.

Victoria is ranked second and Osborne fifth in Eight-Man Division II. Otis-Bison is ranked fifth in Six-Man.

In Class 2A, Phillipsburg is receiving votes while Plainville and Smith Center are both receiving votes in Class 1A. Trego is among the vote getters in Eight-Man Division I.

Across the state’s largest class, 6A, Manhattan retained the top ranking after defeating Garden City, while Derby slipped to No. 2 following its loss to Hays.&nbsp;

Fort Hays State Football returned to the D2Football.com Top 25 on Monday (Sept. 8) after its win at top-10 ranked CSU Pueblo last week. FHSU started the season at No. 20 in the poll, fell out after its loss to nationally ranked Angelo State, but now returns this week after its win over nationally ranked CSU Pueblo. The Tigers are ranked No. 22 in the poll going into MIAA play.

Fort Hays State is one of three MIAA schools in the D2Football.com Top 25 Poll this week, joining Central Oklahoma (No. 12) and Pittsburg State (No. 16). The Tigers open MIAA play this week, hosting Nebraska-Kearney for its MIAA opener on Saturday night (Sept. 13) in Hays at 7 p.m.

In the latest AFCA Top 25 Poll, Fort Hays State is back among the receiving votes section. The Tigers were the fourth-highest receiving votes team in the preseason poll, were not mentioned in the September 2 edition of the poll, but return to the receiving votes section this week with 14 votes. Nebraska-Kearney, Fort Hays State's opponent this week, received one vote in the poll. Central Oklahoma is No. 15 and Pittsburg State is No. 24 in the latest AFCA poll.

🏈 Tigers return to D2Football.com Top 25, receive votes in AFCA poll

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – John Johnson and Taderian Partee of Fort Hays State were two of three individuals named MIAA Football Athletes of the Week on Monday (Sept. 8). Johnson was tabbed the Defensive Athlete of the Week, while Partee was named the Special Teams Athlete of the Week.

John Johnson recorded a team-high 13 tackles in Fort Hays State's one-point win on the road over No. 5/6 ranked CSU Pueblo. It matched the third-highest total in a game for his career, just two shy of his career high. With the game knotted at 29-29, he had a key tackle that kept the Thunderwolves shy of a first down at FHSU's 36 yardline. Moments later the Tigers forced a turnover on downs before driving down the field to score their game-deciding touchdown and extra point.

Defensive lineman Taderian Partee had the big special teams play that secured a one-point win for Fort Hays State on the road over No. 5/6 ranked CSU Pueblo. CSU Pueblo scored a touchdown with 27 seconds remaining to trail by just one, 36-35. Partee blocked the PAT attempt of the Thunderwolves to keep the Tigers in the lead as they went on to secure the onside kick and win the game. Partee also had two tackles in the game on defense. CSU Pueblo was the highest AFCA ranked team the Tigers defeated in their NCAA Division II history.

Johnson and Partee joined Martin Tillman of Missouri Southern (offense) as this week's honorees from the conference office.

Your trust, support, and friendship have made our family furniture business a success for over four decades — and we are truly thankful and grateful for every memory shared along the way.Thank you again for your loyalty and friendship.
