HAYS - Hays High opened up their new field with the high profile Choctaw Yellowjackets out of Oklahoma. The inaugural game was one to remember as the Indians walked off the field with a 21-19 victory.&nbsp;

Holden Lind scored the first points at the new Hays High school on a 59 yard run with 4:07 left in the first quarter. The first point after touchdown attempt was put through the uprights by Carson Moore for a 7-0 score.

The Yellowjackets needed just three plays on their next drive to score. A pair of screen plays ate up 74 yards to draw Choctaw within a single point. Jarek Purdy broke up a pass in the end zone on a two point conversion attempt that kept the lead in the hands of Hays at 7-6 with 3:11 to go in the first.

The Indian defense stiffened for the remaining of the half. Defensive tackle Tanner Geist intercepted a bobbled screen pass. Hays started the last two possessions of the first half in Choctaw territory but came up empty. The final drive started at the Yellowjacket 35 yard line following a negative one yard punt.

A pair of pass interference calls put Hays at the eight. Their final play of the half came up two yards short of the end zone as time expired.

Jace Myers recovered a Choctaw fumble to begin the second half. The offense turned that into points. Eight plays after the fumble, quarterback Zane Viegra stretched his 6'2' frame into the end zone on fourth and inches. Moore's extra point increased the lead to 14-6 with 7:14 left in the third quarter.

A quick three and out forced by the Hays defense put the offense back into motion. Holden Lind capped a 13 play drive with a one yard rushing score. Moore's extra point put the Indians up 21-6 with 10:54 left in the game.

Things nearly got away from Hays. Choctaw scored on a seven yard run to close the gap to 21-12 after another failed two-point conversion attempt with 6:56 left. Two Hays High players ran into each other on the onside kick allowing the Yellowjackets to get the ball back. Twenty-four seconds later Choctaw scored on a 32 yard pass. This time they elected to kick an extra point for a 21-19 game with 6:32 left.

The Indians fumbled the ball two plays later on offense. Choctaw advanced to six yard line before being forced back to the 22 yard line for fourth down. A pass fell incomplete in the end zone allowing Hays to run out the clock for the 21-19 victory.

Hays (2-0) will take on their third straight number ranked 6A team when they travel to Manhattan. Choctaw (1-1) travels to Bixby for their third straight road game to open the season.

NORTON – It had been more than a decade since the TMP-Marian
Monarchs defeated the Norton BlueJays on the gridiron, and they had never beaten
them on their home field, but that all came to an end Friday night thanks to
several big plays and an opportunistic defense as the Monarchs pick up the 55-6 victory.

Norton (0-2, 0-2 MCL) opened the game with the football, and
on their first offensive play, they fumbled a handoff and TMP recovered the
ball at the BlueJays' 17-yard line.

The Monarchs (1-1, 1-1 MCL) wasted no time taking advantage
of the Norton miscue, scoring on a Jackson Gillespie 17-yard touchdown run for
a 7-0 lead, just 16 seconds into the game. 

After each team punted the football on their next possession,
a good punt by TMP’s Carson Liles pinned Norton inside their 20-yard line.
Three plays later, Jacob Seib intercepted a Norton pass and returned it 16
yards for the pick-6, with the extra point giving the Monarchs a 14-point lead with
six minutes left in the first quarter.

Following another Norton punt, the Monarchs went to the air
as Carson Liles found Isaac Purinton for a 54-yard touchdown pass, making it 21-0
TMP with just under one minute and 27 seconds left in the first quarter.

Down three scores, Norton answered with their best drive of
the game, driving inside the TMP 15-yard line. Still, it went from bad to worse
for the BlueJays when Norton quarterback Ashton Kats was intercepted for the
second time in the first half. TMP’s Grant Nehls returned the interception 100
yards for the score, putting TMP up 28-0 after the extra point with just under
11 minutes left in the second quarter.

Norton broke onto the scoreboard with just over eight and a
half minutes left in the first half on a 54-yard touchdown pass for a 28-6 TMP
lead.

TMP converted on another scoring drive a little more than
four minutes later when Liles found Seib for a 14-yard touchdown pass, putting
TMP up 34-6 after the failed extra point.

That would be the halftime score in favor of the Monarchs.

TMP opened possession of the ball in the third quarter, but
they weren’t able to do anything with it. But just like in the first half,
Norton fumbled right back to TMP, their fourth turnover of the game, giving TMP
possession at the Norton 38-yard line.

The Monarchs were facing a third down and long when Liles
found Nehls for a 26-yard sliding over-the-shoulder catch that set up a six-yard
touchdown run by Liles, putting TMP up 41-6 with six and a half minutes left in
the third quarter.

The Monarchs added two more rushing touchdowns by Gillespie,
each from a yard out, capping his three-touchdown day as the Monarchs secured
the 55-6 victory.

The victory for TMP marks the first win over Norton since
2011, ending a 10-game losing streak and their first win at Norton.

The Monarchs will host the Phillipsburg Panther for homecoming
next week.

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State women's soccer (0-3-0) came up short in a competitive 1-0 defeat to Augustana University (2-0-1) on Friday night at FHSU Soccer Stadium. The match was scoreless at the half, but saw the Vikings break through with the only goal of the match about 18 minutes into the second half.

The Vikings took the lead in the 63rd minute when Ally Hamski threaded a ball through the Tiger defense to Madelyn White, who prevailed in a one-on-one situation with Tiger keeper Hadley Ostrander. The Tiger keeper had a strong night, making several key saves earlier to keep the game level.

Ostrander recorded four saves on the night. Sydney Cotter and Chaley French each took two shots. Makenzie Nelson led Augustana with four shots, followed by White with three. Vikings keeper Taya Baker had three saves.

In their next match, Fort Hays State hosts Southwest Minnesota State on Sunday (Sept. 14) at FHSU Soccer Stadium. The matchup is set for a noon.

⚽ Second half goal lifts Augustana past Tigers

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State volleyball team improved to 7-1 on the year with two more wins Friday (Sept. 12) on day two of the Tiger Classic. The Tigers made quick work of Northwestern Oklahoma State to start the day, winning in straight sets 25-14, 25-14, 25-15, before taking down Midwestern State in four in the nightcap, 25-23, 25-22, 23-25, 26-24. The Rangers dip to 1-7 on the year, while the Mustangs are now 3-2 to start the season.

Fort Hays State 3, Northwestern Oklahoma State 0 The Tigers dominated throughout the opening match of the day, only trailing by as many as one at 3-2 in the second set and 2-1 in the third before running away with a sweep against Northwestern Oklahoma State. The Tiger hitters were highly efficient, totaling 43 kills compared to just seven errors for a .396 attack percentage. It was FHSU's best attack percentage since 2018 (.507 vs. Science &amp; Arts Oklahoma, 8/24/18) and its best effort against an NCAA DII program in nine years (.396 at Southwest Baptist, 11/12/16). FHSU added seven team blocks, limiting the Rangers to a swing rate of .073.

Fort Hays State used a 9-1 run midway through the opening set to pull away, turning an 11-8 advantage into a 20-9 edge. The Tigers made only two attack errors in the opening frame, swinging at a .440 clip while holding NWOSU to a -.080 attack percentage.

The Rangers scored first in the second set to take their first lead of the match, but it was short lived after the Tigers scored four in a row following a 4-4 tie. The Tigers methodically added to their lead before scoring the final seven points of the frame, including two aces and a kill from Abrey Galt.

It was more of the same in the third set, with the Tigers again using a 9-1 run to turn a three-point lead at 7-4 into an 11-point advantage, 16-5. Kirsten Evans dropped in a pair of service aces during the run, with Grace Schmedding adding two kills. Ashlyn Reeves ultimately brought things to a close with her eighth kill of the match.

Schmedding led all hitters with 11 kills, doing so without an error on 20 swings for an attack rate of .550. She also tied Evans for the team lead with 11 digs. Gracie Rains matched Reeves' eight kills, while both had three blocks. Galt contributed 23 assists and two service aces, while Evans led the match with three aces. Tess de Zanet paced the Rangers with 10 kills.

Fort Hays State 3, Midwestern State 1 The Tigers came out on top after four close sets against Midwestern State in the nightcap thanks to a strong defensive effort from the home team, who recorded 94 digs and 11.5 total blocks. The visitors kept the match competitive, narrowly avoiding a sweep with a third-set win.

The back-and-forth affair included 24 ties and 15 lead changes over the two-plus hour match. FHSU hit .199 as a team while holding the Mustangs to a swing rate of .179. The Tigers capitalized on six service aces, compared to just two from MSU.

Back-to-back blocks from Reyes and Carsyn Cormaney capped off a four-point Tiger run that pushed FHSU's lead to five. The lead hovered around three for much of the set before the visitors pushed back to level things at 21. Ella Goodwin helped the Tigers reach set point with a kill before delivering the final blow two rallies later, giving FHSU a 25-23 win.

The lead changed hands six times in the second set alone alongside nine ties. The black and gold led by as many as four midway through the frame, 14-10, before the visitors rallied to level the score at 16. The teams traded points for the next several rallies until the Tigers scored five in a row to take a 23-19 lead. Cormaney tied the score with a kill before Goodwin dropped in back-to-back kills. Galt ended the run with a kill of her own, putting the Tigers within two points of taking the set. FHSU finished things off four rallies later on a Mustang error, winning 25-22.

Fort Hays State led for much of the early going of the third set before MSU used a 6-1 run to take a 17-15 lead. The Tigers answered with four-straight points of their own to go back up by two, but the Mavericks were able to regain the lead at 23-22 before taking the frame three points later, 25-23.

Midwestern State built its first sizeable lead in the fourth set, going in front 15-10 at the midway point. But the Tigers never relented, later going on an 8-3 run to steal the lead, 23-22. The Mustangs answered by scoring the next two points to reach set point, but two kills from Schmedding and one from Goodwin gave the Tigers the match with a 26-24 win.

Goodwin dropped in a team-high 14 kills, while Reyes added eight kills, nine blocks and 18 assists. Rains totaled 11 kills, with Bergschneider chipping in 10 kills and 18 digs. Evans led the way on defense with 23 digs and two service aces. Four Mustangs had a dozen or more kills, led by 16 from Isabella Dickens.

After hosting crossover tournament back-to-back weekends, the Tigers will hit the road for the first time next weekend (Sept. 19-20) when they head to the Oklahoma City area for the MIAA/GAC Crossover. FHSU will first play two matches in Edmond on Friday before wrapping up the weekend in Shawnee on Saturday.

 </figure>FHSU AthleticsHAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State volleyball team improved to 7-1 on the year with two more wins Friday (Sept. 12) on day two of the Tiger Classic. The Tigers made quick work of Northwestern Oklahoma State to start the day, winning in straight sets 25-14, 25-14, 25-15, before taking down Midwestern State in four in the nightcap, 25-23, 25-22, 23-25, 26-24. The Rangers dip to 1-7 on the year, while the Mustangs are now 3-2 to start the season.Fort Hays State 3, Northwestern Oklahoma State 0 The Tigers dominated throughout the opening match of the day, only trailing by as many as one at 3-2 in the second set and 2-1 in the third before running away with a sweep against Northwestern Oklahoma State. The Tiger hitters were highly efficient, totaling 43 kills compared to just seven errors for a .396 attack percentage. It was FHSU's best attack percentage since 2018 (.507 vs. Science &amp; Arts Oklahoma, 8/24/18) and its best effort against an NCAA DII program in nine years (.396 at Southwest Baptist, 11/12/16). FHSU added seven team blocks, limiting the Rangers to a swing rate of .073.Fort Hays State used a 9-1 run midway through the opening set to pull away, turning an 11-8 advantage into a 20-9 edge. The Tigers made only two attack errors in the opening frame, swinging at a .440 clip while holding NWOSU to a -.080 attack percentage.The Rangers scored first in the second set to take their first lead of the match, but it was short lived after the Tigers scored four in a row following a 4-4 tie. The Tigers methodically added to their lead before scoring the final seven points of the frame, including two aces and a kill from Abrey Galt.It was more of the same in the third set, with the Tigers again using a 9-1 run to turn a three-point lead at 7-4 into an 11-point advantage, 16-5. Kirsten Evans dropped in a pair of service aces during the run, with Grace Schmedding adding two kills. Ashlyn Reeves ultimately brought things to a close with her eighth kill of the match.Schmedding led all hitters with 11 kills, doing so without an error on 20 swings for an attack rate of .550. In line with new state mandates, Fort Hays State University is dismantling Diversity, Equity and Inclusion practices.

Those changes have affected funding for some student groups, dictated what types of events those groups can host, and forced them to scrub key language from their mission statements.&nbsp;

<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/briefs/dei-barred-in-kansas-government-universities-beginning-aug-1/">According to the Kansas Reflector</a>, state lawmakers effectively ended DEI practices in state government and universities with Aug. 1 as the compliance deadline.

Kansas Secretary of Administration, Adam Proffitt, confirmed that all DEI-related positions, programs, trainings, grants and contracts were eliminated.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-dei-schools-lawsuit-ruling-education-department-4c1dbb5f7b3997ba78c17b25a935fb3f">The Associated Press reported on Aug. 14</a> that a federal judge in Maryland struck down two Trump administration Education Department memos that threatened schools and universities with the loss of federal funding if they continued DEI programs.

U.S. District Judge Stephanie Gallagher ruled that the Education Department violated the law when it tried to impose sweeping anti-DEI restrictions without proper rulemaking.

Scott Cason, FHSU's chief communications officer, provided the following statement:

"Fort Hays State University has taken the necessary steps to ensure we fully comply with federal and state law and the guidance we received from the Kansas Board of Regents in this area," he said.

Cason provided a <a href="https://www.k-state.edu/2025-federal-transition/DEI%20Guidance%20For%20State%20Universities%20in%20Kansas%206.18.2025.pdf">document from the Board of Regents</a>, which provides guidance for state universities to comply with the <a href="https://kslegislature.gov/li/b2025_26/measures/documents/sb125_enrolled.pdf">2025 Senate Bill 125</a>. This bill mandates the elimination of positions, programs and policies related to DEI across state agencies.

The guidance also emphasized that federal and state antidiscrimination laws, academic freedom, research, curricula and programs open to all students are not restricted.

Julie Grabbe, FHSU's legal counsel and university culture strategist, said the university has been eliminating state-funded activities related to DEI.

"We're doing an entire audit. We're looking at everything because the law is very broad in general," she said. "There's a lot of confusion about the law... the legislature didn't define diversity [in Senate Bill 125]."

The guidance provided by the board of regents also states that the bill does not define what DEI is. Grabbe said, despite the changes, student organizations were already open to anyone interested in joining.

"We are working hard to keep the university compliant, while at the same time recognizing that we want our students to feel like they belong here," she said.

Grabbe said students and organizations with questions or concerns are welcome to contact her directly.

Star Parham, president of the FHSU Black Student Union, said her group was required to remove DEI terminology from its bylaws and event descriptions.

"We were going to have a guest speaker this past year, but that was during the heat of pushing back and getting rid of DEI. That speaker was no longer able to come out of fear that our funds that we were receiving at that time would not be able to be used for that exact event," Parham said.

Despite these obstacles, Parham said she remains committed to its mission and finding strength in adversity. Upcoming events for the student group include a Black History Month banquet in February, which could still face uncertainty.

Genisis Wilson, vice president of the Black Student Union, said DEI restrictions have affected student groups as funding and approvals now hinge on avoiding DEI language.

Wilson said events and posters have needed to be reworded, and the group of about 15 to 25 is discussing potentially making significant changes to how they present themselves and where they meet.

"Black Student Union is very concerned that we're going to have to A: change the meaning of our club or B: move off of campus," she said.

Wilson said the club has always been inclusive from the start, as a diverse group of active members is involved in celebrating Black culture and excellence. However, it now needs to reframe that messaging and advertise itself as open to everyone.

"We have to stop talking about DEI, but we're the Black Student Union, and that's what our biggest point of contention is. How are we supposed to take all this wording out when this is what we are and what we do?" she said.

Parham said DEI creates environments where students of all backgrounds feel welcome and protected, and, no matter what, there will always be something for everyone at FHSU.

"As a student at Fort Hays, I have felt both supported and like I was in the midst of what's going on. As time goes on, things may get harder, but there's plenty of student organizations on campus that are gonna keep fighting," she said.

FHSU Student Government Association and funding

Wilson said the annual hair care event workshop, hosted by the Black Student Union, received no funding for the first time, as it was marked as "personal gain" despite its broader benefits.

"They didn't think it was inclusive enough for everyone because it's curly hair-focused. We talk about protective hairstyles for Black people... But in reality, our prizes we give out work for a lot of different hair types, and non-Black people have curly hair," she said.

The FHSU Student Government Association serves as the representative body for students, advocating on their behalf to the administration, the Kansas Legislature and the Board of Regents.

Student senators manage funding sources that support student-led projects and opportunities on campus.

Jackson Sinsel, FHSU Student Government Association president, said that state funds cannot be used for items considered "personal gain," such as T-shirts, giveaways, or prizes, a rule applied consistently to student groups.

"Student Government Association has no issue with these events, but cannot fund these products with state funds," Sinsel said. "Similar expenses and requests were cut from 65 other groups on campus."

Sinsel said that the student association has partnered with several campus organizations in past events, including the Black Student Union. He added that all groups are welcome to submit funding requests.

Wilson said that although campus faculty support DEI initiatives, the support feels insufficient without funding and actions. The Black Student Union has partnered with other student organizations through events.

In March, Wilson gave a presentation through the FHSU's American Democracy Project, a nonpartisan group, highlighting the need for DEI initiatives in various institutions, including education, the workforce and the everyday lives of minorities.

Wilson also said the university has removed a DEI webpage that listed student organizations and resources.

FHSU Hispanic American Leadership Organization

Karina Vargas, Hispanic American Leadership Organization president, says the group has updated its mission statement and communications to avoid restricted DEI terminology.

The student-led organization is a group dedicated to supporting the Hispanic community at FHSU and the local area, participating in civic events, and serving as a support system for those with Latin backgrounds.&nbsp;

"We are not allowed to use some words. For example, diversity, we couldn't include that in our mission statement," Vargas said.

She said the group's old mission statement referenced diversity but now emphasizes inclusivity for all.

"We do promote awareness of our culture and heritage, but we couldn't put [we pledge to increase diversity]," she said. "It's kind of a red flag."

Vargas said members in her group were shocked and discouraged when the DEI restrictions began to roll in, not expecting them to affect them as directly as they did, but she added there were no funding cuts to the organization.

The group consists of about 30 to 40 members. Vargas said DEI matters to her because it helps minorities and first-generation students feel welcome and supported in predominantly white higher-education spaces.

"Even with these new policies, we're gonna do our best to make students feel included and make their voices feel heard," she said.

Vargas said&nbsp;despite the changes,&nbsp;she still feels supported by the school, as each group has its own&nbsp;adviser.

"I feel like Fort Hays does a really good job with such a broad and diverse group of students on campus. It's their job to make students feel welcomed and connected," Vargas said.

The guidance from the Board of Regents also included the removal of gender pronouns or gender ideology from employee email signatures and communications.

The FHSU Gender &amp; Sexuality Alliance President, who asked her name not be used because of safety reasons, declined to comment on the board’s pronoun guidance but said the group has been affected in multiple ways by the DEI changes.

"Funding has been a challenge in the past when it comes to things that we as a club need," she said.

The president said a lavender graduation, a university ceremony honoring the academic achievements and contributions of graduating LGBTQIA+ students, was one event that had to be modified.

The president said the event’s flyer had to undergo numerous changes, ultimately stripping the ceremony of its intended purpose.&nbsp;The flyer was shared on the group’s social media, but without its usual rainbow that symbolizes LGBTQ+ pride.&nbsp;

"There is a sense of worry since there is not much certainty when it comes to the future of our club on campus. Not only for our club but also the individuals that make campus their home," the president said.

The 22-member group has sought support from other campus organizations that may also be affected. The president noted the situation is not FHSU’s fault, but rather stems from the current political climate and the restrictions the university must follow to continue educating future generations.

The president added even before the recent DEI-related changes, the university had already experienced shifts, such as the removal of signs outside teacher offices that once indicated specialized training and identified the space as supportive for students, including those who identify as LGBTQ+.

"DEI is important at the university level because it helps promote collaboration between different people and helps form a community for students," the president said. "It helps form bonds between students, staff and even community members that will last years."

Richard Brown, Jr. 76, of Walker,
Kansas, died on Monday, September 08, 2025, at his home.

Richard was born on September 04,
1949, in Hays, Kansas, the son of Richard and Bertha (Windholz) Brown.&nbsp; He grew up on the family farm north of
Gorham, Kansas and graduated from Gorham High School.&nbsp; In 1969 Richard served his country by joining
the United States Army and served in the Vietnam War from 1969 to 1971, he
received numerous medals including 2 Bronze Stars with “V” devices for valor,
the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Army Commendation Medal.

After the war, he returned home,
living most of his life in the Gorham, Walker and Russell County areas.&nbsp; He was united in marriage to Sharon Peterson
and from this union, Richard was blessed with four children Jack, Gerald, and
Audrey, and Clayton from a second marrige.&nbsp;
He worked as a truck driver, was a member of the V.F.W. Post, a Wounded
Warrior supporter and loved fishing, target shooting and visiting a good pawn
shop.&nbsp; Though Richard was a private
person, he loved t talk and reminisce about the good ol days.&nbsp; He was sharp witted and funny, and love to
make people smile.&nbsp; His favorite topic of
conversation was his seven grandchildren.&nbsp;


Surviving family include his son
Jack Brown (Jamie) of Russell, Kansas, daughter Audrey Dominguez of Littleton,
Colorado and son Gerald Brown (Heidi) of Akins, South Carolina; brother Rodney
Brown (Michelle) of Gorham, Kansas, sisters Coleene Schmitt (J.W.) of Gorham,
Kansas and Galene Steckel of Russell, Kansas; seven grandchildren, Skyler,
Nolan, Brantly Brown, Meiah and Faith Dominguez, Malakai Johnson and Bodhi
Brown.

He was preceded in death by his
parents, brother Roger Brown, sister Jolene Purvis, nephew Nathan Peterka.

A celebration mass of Richard’s
life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at the St.
Fidelis Catholic Church in Victoria, Kansas.&nbsp;
Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 7 P.M. on Monday, September 15, 2025,
at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; The vigil and rosary will be held at 7 P.M.
on September 15, 2025, at the mortuary.&nbsp;
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be given to the Richard
Brown, Jr. Trap Shooting Scholarship and sent in care of the mortuary.&nbsp; Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell,
Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.

The 2026 budget for the City of Hays did not exceed its revenue-neutral rate as originally planned after a last-minute adjustment in the budget figures presented Thursday by Collin Bielser, deputy city manager.&nbsp;

"The governing body has chosen to remain revenue neutral for the budget year 2026," said Bielser.&nbsp;

"Budgeting a year out can be difficult. ...What happened in 2025, a project took longer than we thought and we ended up issuing temporary notes instead of permanent financing which is a lower interest rate, plus we received a good credit rating which lowered the interest rates further.

"Because of those lowered interest rates and the timing, we were able to lower the mill levy for 2026," he said.&nbsp;

A savings of $194,808 was added to the budget.

The mill levy for 2026 is 24.32 mills. This will be the 17th consecutive year Hays' mill levy is at 25 mills or less.

During the revenue-neutral hearing, two candidates for the Hays City Commission, David Vilaysing and David Koshiol, praised the commissioners for not exceeding the revenue-neutral rate.&nbsp;

There were no public comments during the budget public hearing.&nbsp;

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/0e698b7b-a28f-4a21-9b40-880346e893ec">Ellis County</a> and <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/78d0c0ef-e656-4526-892f-35f245aa0336">USD 489</a> governing bodies both approved mill levy increases in their 2026 budgets.

"You (staff) brought us a constrained budget which is what we asked for," said Alaina Cunningham, city commissioner.

"We get accused of patting ourselves on the back for the things that we do," said Mayor Sandy Jacobs. "I just want to make it clear to this community that we're patting our staff and department heads on the back. I don't think anybody really understands how good they are."&nbsp;

Also approved by commissioners were three general nuisance abatements, which allows the city to clean up the properties and charge the property owners if no improvements are made within 10 days.&nbsp;

The property owners on Douglas Drive and East 12th have also been cited for inoperable vehicles.&nbsp;

Hays Area Planning Commission members will review the final plat for Smoky Hill Plains Addition in west Hays during their meeting Monday afternoon.

The plan calls for&nbsp;replatting of the former DK Ranch and undeveloped Columbine Drive lots into 52 lots.&nbsp;

According to information provided to the commission,&nbsp;approximately 18 acres of the western half of DK Ranch Addition will be vacated. The eastern half of DK Ranch and the west half of Columbine will be replatted into Smoky Hill 2 Plains Addition. The property not included in the plat will remain outside city limits and remain unplatted.

The development is designed to have two access points from Columbine Drive.  Street access to future 33rd St. improvements at the north end of the development will also be provided. 

The water drainage way from north to south in the property will serve as greenspace. There will be a multi-use path incorporated from 33rd St. south along Columbine to 27th St.

City utilities will be extended for the development.

 In 1902, Hays, Kansas, was a vibrant yet rugged railroad and military outpost in the heart of the sprawling High Plains. The town offered opportunity and challenge, attracting a colorful mix of characters—from hardworking pioneers and recent immigrants seeking a fresh start to those with less honorable intentions. To thrive in such an environment required more than mere survival; it demanded an adventurous spirit, an ability to adapt, and heaps of determination.

As Fort Hays State University (FHSU) opened its doors within the confines of a former military hospital on the grounds of the historic Fort Hays, it became a place where that very spirit flourished, shaping a community that continues to resonate with the same tenacity that built it.&nbsp;Associate Professor of Teacher Education Matt Clay is at the forefront of this endeavor, a living testament to the adventurous spirit that defines FHSU. Raised in the rural town of Clearwater, situated southwest of Wichita, Matt spent his childhood outdoors, soaking up the beauty of nature while engrossed in tales of adventure. Books detailing the exploits of figures like Teddy Roosevelt and Sir Edmund Hillary inspired him. They instilled in him a lifelong passion for exploration—one he would carry into his career as he prepared the next generation of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) educators.&nbsp;Matt began his academic journey at Pittsburg State University, earning a bachelor of science in education, focusing on biology. He continued his studies at Montana State University, earning a master’s in science education before completing his doctorate at the University of Northern Colorado. The visuals they captured were transformed into teaching resources that now extend educational experiences to K-12 teachers and students around the globe.&nbsp;With an undying curiosity driving him, Matt envisioned aligning his work with the established narratives of exploration he admired so much during his youth. Thus, he contacted the president of the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the New York City-based Explorers Club—a premier organization devoted to supporting scientific expeditions across varied disciplines. Known for its illustrious members, including Arctic pioneers Robert Peary and Roald Amundsen, astronauts like Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, and zoologist Jane Goodall, the club has long been a beacon for individuals passionate about discovery.&nbsp;“I wasn’t sure if my work would even qualify for membership,” Matt confessed. “However, I felt compelled to give it a shot, even just to deepen my understanding of what being a member meant.” To his astonishment, his application was accepted in June, allowing him to become part of a legacy that typically includes those in hard science fields. “I was amazed,” he admitted. “This was a world I’d only dreamed of entering.”&nbsp;Since joining this esteemed organization, Matt has gained more than just a membership card; he has tapped into a treasure trove of resources and connections in exploration. He met a botanist who has conducted groundbreaking fieldwork in the Himalayas—a dream location for Matt, who aspires to photograph its grandeur with his landscape camera. Additionally, access to valuable insights, like strategies for maintaining equipment in frigid conditions, has enriched his craft and field operations.&nbsp;Emboldened by his connection to the Explorers Club, Matt envisions personal growth and avenues for his students to engage in exploration. “There are numerous private and corporate donors that could support the efforts of club members,” he explained. “While such funding rarely supports university work, opportunities arise if one isn't afraid to ask.”&nbsp;His wife, Krysten, initially raised an eyebrow when he shared the news of his acceptance. “She wondered how I could benefit from a club I’d rarely visit,” he laughed, recounting his attempts to convince her. “I pointed out that the club’s location, just two miles from Broadway in Manhattan, might offer its own adventures!”&nbsp;Matt Clay epitomizes the ethos of our Tiger Teacher Nation at FHSU.
