If you find that you are feeling a little more stressed than usual right now, you’re definitely not alone. Most people would say the holidays bring extra stress. It could be several things that include: the extra expenses. Angry in-laws. Exhausted and sugared-up kids. Cold weather and seasonal darkness. Final exams, sporting events and recitals. Absent romantic partners. Profound loneliness . . . Individually, we can handle each of these stressors as they come. But during the holidays, everything hits at once and can become overwhelming for anyone!

When we are stressed, we need to be sure we are coping with it in the best ways possible. When stress gets the best of us, we may turn to less healthy means of coping. Here are some ways to make the season less stressful and more fun.

The holiday season is a time of parties and other social gatherings. Remember that you don't have to do it all. Figure out what you really enjoy versus what you feel you’re supposed to do.

Focus the majority of your energy and time on activities that are fun for you.

Travel can be especially stressful during the holiday season. If you must travel, do what you can to make it as easy as possible on yourself. Try to get direct flights or at least minimize the number of stops along the way. You'll avoid the stress of having to rush from one plane to the next or having to wait around for long periods of time.

Many people complain about spending too much time in the car during the holiday season driving from one gathering to the next. This can be exhausting. If possible, limit your driving to one or two events that you truly want to attend. It's part of setting healthy boundaries and keeping a reasonable schedule.

For many, the holidays are a time of gift giving. This can be a lot of fun, but it can also be financially stressful. Go make a budget now and stay within the spending limits that you have set.

You're not obligated to spend beyond your means, and you will very likely regret it if you do.

4. Be responsible about food and alcohol consumption

Do your best to stick with healthy eating choices. Don't overdue the sugar. Moderation is key, especially with holiday treats and alcohol. Many of us succumb to the pressure to overeat or drink to excess during the holidays. But too much sugar messes up your natural hormone responses, blood sugar, insulin levels, and your brain’s neurotransmitters (the body’s chemical messengers). Try to stay within your usual guidelines for healthy eating and responsible drinking. Remember to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

5. Enjoy family on your terms and set boundaries

While it can be enjoyable to see family during the holidays, some people find extended family time to be stressful. Do whatever you need to do to take care of yourself. If necessary, take a break from the gathering. Go for a walk. Call someone you enjoy talking to. Take some alone time if you need it. And then you decide what you can handle around the plans that are made whether it is around traveling, food, hosting, and money spent.

Consider giving yourself the gift of time during the holidays. Take a break from rushing around, shopping, cooking, and cleaning. Set aside time to read a good book, watch your favorite movie, go for a bike ride or take a nap. Skip social media and screen time and spend more time looking in your loved ones eyes and choose human connection rather than the screen time. Your mental health will thank you.

The holidays can be especially challenging for those of us who have lost loved ones. Be sure to make space for your grief. Consider changing up your traditions to make your feelings of loss more manageable. You can also find a new way to weave in the memory of your loved one into your existing holiday traditions.

Get plenty of sleep. Eat regularly. Exercise. Get a massage. Meditate. Don't forget to breathe. And don’t forget to get outside and move. I don’t care how cold it is—put on some extra layers and just do it (or at least get into the gym). Exercise helps your body process and release stress hormones, and nature is important for our emotional and physical health. Here are some ways you can stay active during the holidays:

· Bundle up and go on a walk to see Christmas lights in the neighborhood.

· Get an epic snowball fight going with the neighbors (play is exercise too).

Nobody wants to be sick at Christmastime—and exercising, getting outside, and resting are all natural immune-boosting activities that will help you feel strong, peaceful and healthy.

Try and stick to your normal routine as much as possible.

If you know that this time of year is typically hard for you, lean on your friends and family. Talk to them about how you're feeling and let them help you set boundaries and practice self-care. KOERNER: Holiday stress

Merry Christmas Everyone! At this time of year, we bring plants into our house to help decorate for the season. Many of these, such as trees and poinsettias are removed and discarded at the end of the season, but Christmas Cactus are plants that you can enjoy all year long! I found a short article on them to share with you this week that goes over care if you have one already, or what to do if you are looking at getting a Cactus. I hope you enjoy this and I hope each and every one of you has a Very Merry Christmas!

Christmas Cactus (Schlumbergera bridgesii) and Thanksgiving Cactus (Schlumbergera truncata) are epiphytes native to the jungles of South America. Epiphytic plants grow on other plants and use them for support but not for nutrients. Though these cacti are different species, they will hybridize and produce varying stem shapes. Christmas cactus normally has smooth stem segments, and Thanksgiving Cactus has hook-like appendages on each segment. Both of these cacti prefer bright indirect light. Too much sun can result in the leaves turning yellow. Common household temperatures are fine. Soil should be kept constantly moist but not waterlogged. Give them a light fertilization every other week. Blooming will normally cease in late winter to early spring, but continue to keep them moist and fertilized until fall. During the fall, stop fertilizing, and give the plants only enough water so the stems do not shrivel in order to encourage flower bud formation. Though these plants seem to flower best if kept a little pot bound, flowers will diminish if they are too crowded. If you haven't repotted in several years, or if you notice a decrease in flowering from the previous year, move the plant to a larger pot in the spring. If possible, move the plants outside for the summer. Choose a shady spot because these plants will not tolerate full sun. Leave the plants outside until frost threatens. Normally, the plants will have received enough cool nights in the 50- to 55-degree range that flower buds will have formed. However, if they haven't, subjecting the plants to nights greater than 12 hours long and temperatures between 59 and 69 degrees can also generate flowers. Twenty-five consecutive long nights is enough for flower initiation. Place the plants in an unused room or cover them with a dark cloth or cardboard box to insure that they receive uninterrupted darkness. After the flower buds have formed, it takes an additional nine to 10 weeks for flowers to complete development and bloom.

The Environmental Protection Agency has required each state to update their certification and training plans, which outline private and commercial pesticide certification in Kansas for agricultural producers.

Starting January 1, 2025 there will be three options for applicators to receive certification. These include:

· Closed-book examination (We will still offer this option at the Extension Office)

· Attend an in-person training to obtain certification

· Complete an online training that will be released

The new options to be able to get a private pesticide certification will also be the same for a producer to recertify.

Farmers &amp; ranchers--if you need to get your private applicator license, DO NOT DELAY and get to your local County of District Extension Office before the Christmas Holiday.

It’s a challenging question of self-discovery, but those who can answer it tend to live longer, more satisfied lives.

Usually, physical health is the factor that comes to mind when considering life expectancy. However, a positive outlook, specifically, one that gets you out of bed in the morning can extend your life.

In the Okinawan culture, this is known as Ikigai, and it may be worthwhile to take notes from this group as a significant number of them live to see their 100th birthday. But, don’t just take it from lived experience, multiple studies have also discovered the longevity and life purpose connection.

While the relationship is fascinating, you may wonder, “What defines life purpose?”

Life purpose is broad and is defined differently by everyone. However, it generally indicates life aim and goals. One study found common themes of purpose related to:

Evaluating your beliefs and interests can help you find purpose and help you avoid the distractions of daily life. To capitalize on your personal mission, creating a list of goals can remind you about what is important in life, what you have done, and what you aim to accomplish.

In fact, having purpose extends life, but it can also be a coping mechanism that allows you to get through hard times.

Frank Martela, lead author of a recent study says it best, “A life of purpose can energize and give hope even during those moments when the conditions of one’s life leave one unsatisfied.”

Regardless of your personal mission, taking ownership of it can improve life expectancy and help you through trying times. With increased awareness and intention, it also has the potential to boost your performance in each role you take to heart.

I encourage you to develop a personal mission and to make decisions based on it. After all, you only have one life, so literally (and figuratively) make the most of it!

Make plans to attend an impactful meeting hosted by Midway and Cottonwood Extension District’s in Ellsworth Kansas on Tuesday, January 7th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Our keynote speaker is an expert in agricultural law, Roger McEowen, from Washburn Law School in Topeka, Kans. McEowen has taught classes across the United States…and at universities like Iowa State, University of Arkansas and Kansas State University. McEowen will cover topics like leasing arrangement considerations, estate tax planning, and potential changes to agricultural laws stemming from the recent U.S. election.

Dr. Glynn Tonsor, a professor in the Agricultural Economics department at Kansas State University, will provide attendees with a cattle market update. Producers will find this outlook useful as they continue to plan for their financial future.

Other speakers include Hi-Plains Farm Credit, and Dr. Jenny Ifft, the Flinchbaugh Agricultural Policy Chair in the Kansas State Agricultural Economics Department.

BOOR: KSU Extension to host financial management meeting

Thanksgiving is over and we turn our attention to the end of the year holidays. It is important to plan ahead to avoid overspending during this time of the year so we can have a less stressful 2025! Here are some tips:

· Make a list of expected holiday expenses before the season. This includes cards, holiday gatherings, travel, gifts, holiday grocery shopping, gifts for neighbors, work parties, and donations to charities.

· Make a pre-holiday budget that is realistic and then make a plan to stay within the budget.

· Keep a record of money spent. Record keeping shows how the seemingly small purchases add up. It also becomes a reference to use when planning comes around next year.

· Have family conversations about limiting the number of gifts or limiting their cost.

· Limit the use of credit cards since they make it very easy to spend more than planned.

· Some stores offer layaway plans. Layaway helps you get the gift when you see the sale and then spread out the payments over a certain period. You must pay in full before you can pick up the item.

· Buy Now, Pay Later plans are also offered at many stores or through your credit cards. These plans allow you to take home the item today and pay in installments after purchase. Look carefully at the fees and interest rates for these plans and make sure to look at the total cost.

· Watch for sales and coupons for gifts and holiday decorations and food items. Many free shopping apps can assist in getting the latest deals.

· Challenge stores to price match when you can.

· Buy items early when you see them on sale if your spending plan allows. Or take advantage of year-end sales for gift purchases that can wait until after the holiday. This may be particularly helpful for saving money on big-ticket items.

· Homemade gifts are a great way to personalize a gift without breaking your budget.

It is important to plan ahead to avoid overspending during this time of the year so we can have a less stressful 2025! Here are some tips:· Make a list of expected holiday expenses before the season. This includes cards, holiday gatherings, travel, gifts, holiday grocery shopping, gifts for neighbors, work parties, and donations to charities.· Make a pre-holiday budget that is realistic and then make a plan to stay within the budget.· Keep a record of money spent. Record keeping shows how the seemingly small purchases add up. It also becomes a reference to use when planning comes around next year.· Have family conversations about limiting the number of gifts or limiting their cost.· Limit the use of credit cards since they make it very easy to spend more than planned.· Some stores offer layaway plans. Layaway helps you get the gift when you see the sale and then spread out the payments over a certain period. You must pay in full before you can pick up the item.· Buy Now, Pay Later plans are also offered at many stores or through your credit cards. These plans allow you to take home the item today and pay in installments after purchase. Look carefully at the fees and interest rates for these plans and make sure to look at the total cost.· Watch for sales and coupons for gifts and holiday decorations and food items. Many free shopping apps can assist in getting the latest deals.· Challenge stores to price match when you can.· Buy items early when you see them on sale if your spending plan allows. Or take advantage of year-end sales for gift purchases that can wait until after the holiday. KOERNER: Holiday spending

Water supply to rural residences and agricultural operations without rural or public water systems is usually obtained from a private well or surface water supply. In Kansas, more than 73,000 individuals rely on private wells for a water supply. When public and rural water systems that use well water are added to the private well numbers, 34.6% of the Kansas population relies on groundwater for their water supply.

Municipal and rural water systems must maintain water quality standards specified by local, state, or federal requirements; however, owners of private wells are responsible for the water quality of their wells. Permanent contamination of groundwater can decrease property values, affect human and animal health, and involve legal liability.

Testing water from private wells has shown that some wells do not meet the safe drinking water standards used for public water systems. The primary reasons for this reduction in water quality from private wells include:

· contamination sources upslope or near the well;

· failure to construct the well in accordance with current standards;

· inadequate well maintenance and service; and

· lack of protection from activities that risk contamination.

Following the guidelines for recommended separation distance and direction from potential contamination sources when locating a well can help protect private well water quality. When private wells are appropriately sited and constructed, routine maintenance is required to ensure wells continue to be safe. Wells that do not receive regular maintenance are more likely to produce unsafe water.

CAMPBELL: Private wells in Kansas: Safe location and maintenance guidelines

The opening of the 41st-annual 5-State Photography Exhibition at the Hays Arts Center, 112 E. 11th, will anchor the 2024 Hays Art Council Winter Art Walk&nbsp;from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

"The show is very popular," said Brenda Meder, executive director of the arts council. "It has 150 amazing photographs chosen by the juror from 588 outstanding pieces submitted by photographers in Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, Oklahoma and Colorado.

"It's going to be an amazing show," she said.

<a href="https://danwhite.com/">Dan White</a>, Kansas City, was a first-time juror for the competition.

The internationally published photographer has won numerous awards, including a Pulitzer Prize, for his work on the Kansas City Star newspaper team covering the 1981 collapse of the Hyatt Regency Hotel skywalks. White continues his 30-year commercial fine art photographer career and was recently inducted into the Missouri Photojournalism Hall of Fame.

Most of the 18 stops on the art walk are in downtown Hays businesses. Student collections are also exhibited at Fort Hays State University.&nbsp;

&nbsp;"There are features from a senior BFA exhibition as well as an MFA exhibition at the university. Community artists are also featured in showcases," Meder said.

Meder says the day can be topped off with Christmas Past at Old Fort Hays that evening.

"It is another way to show the incredible creative and cultural spirit across the community, truly from morning until night," Meder said.

Meder said the host locations share diverse art, including art made by children.

The Cottonwood Extension District Office will highlight children's artwork from local home, group and child care centers.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Make-and-take LEGO printmaking for all ages with FHSU art education students and instructor Brian Hutchinson will be hosted at eyeSMILE Vision and Dental, 1300 Main.

The literary arts and the FHSU English Department will be represented at the Hays Public Library, 1205 Main, with host Eileen Veatch, the FHSU poet laureate.&nbsp;

Annual Hays Arts Council Winter Art Walk Saturday

Millions of Americans fall each year, and one’s&nbsp;fall risk increases
dramatically during the winter. Among older adults, falls are the leading cause
of fatal injury and non-fatal trauma. In fact, every 19 minutes an older adult
dies from a fall. Further, falls have a substantial financial toll and
collectively cost over $50 billion annually. Here are 5 tips for preventing
slips, trips, and falls.

No matter the
weather, we should always strive to wear proper footwear. Specifically, shoes that
support your foot appropriately, have a firm sole, and have&nbsp;good traction.
Traction is especially important during the winter months as&nbsp;you never&nbsp;know
when you will encounter ice, snow, or slush.&nbsp;Investing in&nbsp;a safe pair
of shoes can save you thousands of dollars in medical&nbsp;expenses that&nbsp;may
result from a fall.

Having your
vision regularly assessed is a crucial component of fall prevention.
Age-related eye diseases, such as glaucoma and cataracts, can affect your
ability to see clearly. Having an untreated condition can affect your ability
to walk safely, especially on slippery surfaces. Eye diseases are not the only
culprit, though. Of course, you always want to make sure that you are seeing as
clearly as possible. Make sure you go to the eye doctor at least once per year.

Have you ever
read the warning labels on your medicine bottle? Perhaps you should! One common
side effect of medication is dizziness or lightheadedness. These side effects
can also increase your risk of experiencing a fall. If you experience any of
these symptoms, talk to your doctor. There may be an alternative medication.

Inner ear
disorders, low blood pressure, and arthritis can make you susceptible to falls.
Regular check-ups – at least once every 12 months – is an important part of
fall prevention. Talk to your doctor about what might increase your risk of
falls, and discuss ways to address those issues.

Research shows
that older adults who regularly exercise are less likely to experience a fall. Walk
around the block, practice Tai Chi or yoga, or lift weights. Any amount of
exercise is beneficial for overall health.

Be aware of
your risk of falling this winter, and acknowledge the changes you can make to
reduce your risk all year round.

WINKEL: Fall prevention during winter months

The Environmental Protection Agency has required each state to update their certification and training plans, which outline private and commercial pesticide certification in the state. With this, producers that have a pesticide license need to be aware of some upcoming changes to the private applicator certification and testing that is conducted, especially at the Extension office. In order to meet these objectives, the Kansas Department of Agriculture introduced house bill 2607, which was approved by the legislature making some changes to the private applicator certification.

Starting Jan. 1, 2025 there will be three options for applicators to receive certification. These include:

The new options to be able to get a private pesticide certification will also be the way for a producer to recertify.

If you are someone that may have been putting off getting your certification, or if you are able to renew, you may want to get certified before the end of the year. The Extension office has a limited amount of books on private pesticides for loan so that you can study and then come take the test. We will also be working on an in-person training in the coming year if you do not complete the test before the regulations change.

BOOR: Pesticide rule change

Holiday parties and big family meals may tempt us away from our healthy eating habits. Allow yourself to have your favorite foods but stick to smaller servings and balance them with healthier options.

Do you have several parties to attend? Plan ahead to help reduce those extra calories. Eat a small meal for breakfast with whole grains, fruit and protein. Don’t starve yourself thinking you’ll save room for party food. Take small bites and savor the delicious party foods. Go through the buffet once to reduce nibbling.

Staying active can help you keep a healthy weight during the holiday season. Look for opportunities to work physical activities into your holiday: Go for a stroll after a family meal, take a walk at the mall, or dance to your favorite holiday music. Aim to get at least 150 minutes a week of physical activity. For example, that could be at least 20 minutes a day or 30 minutes five days a week. It’s important to move more and sit less. Take simple steps to protect your family’s health when you prepare and serve holiday meals such as:

· Wash your hands and work surfaces before, during, and after preparing food, and before eating.

· Keep raw meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs separated during preparation.

· Cook food at the right internal temperature to kill harmful germs. Use a food thermometer to check.

· Refrigerate perishable foods, including leftovers, within two hours of buying or cooking.

Labels on non-refillable containers state, “Do not reuse or refill this container.” Some containers are refillable, and those labels typically say, “Refill this container with pesticide only. Do not reuse this container for any other purpose.” In some cases, the label may say, “Refill this container with [common chemical name]” or “This is a sealed, refillable container to be used only for [common chemical name],” which indicates that it can be refilled with the same pesticide by a retailer. These labeling statements make every pesticide container, from a 2.5-gallon jug up to a 30-gallon tote, illegal to reuse. Reusing containers for any other purpose is considered pesticide misuse and a violation of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act. A pesticide container, even if it is empty or the label is removed (defaced), remains part of the pesticide product.

After use, pesticide containers should be disposed of properly. Disposal options may be limited by local regulations and ordinances. Containers that have been triple rinsed and crushed and/or punctured may be accepted by sanitary landfills or landfills that accept industrial waste. Check with your landfill operator prior to taking empty containers for disposal. Triple-rinsed containers can also be returned to the supplier. In addition, some counties in Kansas have a plastic pesticide container recycling program. Check with your county’s Environmental Office or Household Hazardous Waste program for more information.

Disposal options may be limited by local regulations and ordinances. Containers that have been triple rinsed and crushed and/or punctured may be accepted by sanitary landfills or landfills that accept industrial waste. Check with your landfill operator prior to taking empty containers for disposal. Triple-rinsed containers can also be returned to the supplier. In addition, some counties in Kansas have a plastic pesticide container recycling program. CAMPBELL: Pesticide container misuse, be aware of the regulations

Thanksgiving is around the corner and you’ve likely experienced a range of emotions planning for the holiday. Maybe you’re excited to see family, relieved to have a day off work, or maybe you’re stressed about how much food you’ve got to prepare. Despite the good or bad feelings related to Turkey Day, have you pondered the original name of the holiday itself, “Thanksgiving?”

Thanksgiving is rooted in the tradition of autumn harvest festivals. It has been celebrated for centuries, and George Washington made it an official holiday. He proclaimed that the people of the United States observe "a day of public thanksgiving and prayer."

As you prepare for the big day, I challenge you to remember the origin of the holiday: gratitude. Gratitude is the readiness to show appreciation and to return kindness. Research has found that people who consciously count their blessings tend to be happier and less depressed. In fact, a study showed that people who wrote one letter of thanksgiving for three weeks reported better mental health up to three months after the exercise ended. When people focus on the good in their lives, they tend to ruminate less on their negative experiences. Gratitude not only reduces the risk of depression, but it lowers stress which is a top cause of chronic illnesses including high blood pressure and heart disease.

As you can see, gratitude improves both mental and physical condition. If you’re interested in practicing gratitude for Thanksgiving and beyond, here are a few ways to make it routine:

· Recall three good things that happen to you each day. This may be a fun habit for you and your kids as you tuck them in at night!

· Keep a gratitude journal. Jotting down things you are grateful for is likely to change your perspective. You might see more positivity in the world around you. Looking through the pages of blessings in your life after a tough day may also be especially handy.

· Use your phone for good. We all find ourselves tied to our smart devices, so make it a priority to send a few “thank you” texts per week.

· Be self-aware of complaining. It’s easy to get drawn into a cycle of negativity when things aren’t going your way. To combat this habit, every time you complain, try to find the silver lining. When you can find the good in every situation, there is less room to fixate on the negatives of life.

Regardless of how you decide to practice gratitude, I encourage you to try it. Joshua Brown, a doctor of psychological science said it best, “Much of our time and energy is spent pursuing things we currently don’t have. Gratitude reverses our priorities to help us appreciate the people and things we do.”
