A request for rezoning from agriculture to residential general district for the proposed Covenant Estates First Addition was unanimously approved by the Hays Area Planning Commission Monday during a public hearing.
The application has been submitted for 20 acres of land at the south end of an agricultural field west of Thunderbird between 33rd and 41st Streets.

The first phase of the development is adjacent to single-family residential areas platted in the late 1970s and early ‘80s along Thunderbird Drive and Oakmont Street in northwest Hays.
Covenant Land & Developing, Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, has previously developed housing on Covenant Drive and in King’s Gate Addition near 41st Street.
Jarrod Kuckelman, assistant city manager, said the rezoning request should come before the city commission next month.
Residential general districts are comprised primarily of single-family homes.
The next step will be to plat the area, Kuckelman said.
