OLATHE, KAN. (AP) — A&nbsp;suburban Kansas&nbsp;City teenager has pleaded guilty to lesser charges in the shooting death of another teen during a failed $8 Xanax deal.

The Kansas City Star reports that Jordan Denny, of Olathe, Kansas, originally was charged with felony murder in the March 2019 death of 17-year-old Rowan Padgett. But she instead pleaded guilty Monday to attempted possession of Xanax with intent to distribute, conspiracy to commit possession of Xanax with intent to distribute, interference and use of a telecommunication device during a drug felony. She will be sentenced Feb. 20.

The affidavit says issues arose after Matthew Lee Bibee Jr., who is awaiting trial on a capital murder charge, arranged to buy the anxiety medication through Denny. She told authorities her supplier fell through and that she asked Padgett to leave with Bibee because her father had called police.

The affidavit says Padgett was killed after getting into the car with Bibee, who was wounded two days later in an exchange of gunfire with police.

Another teen, Rolland Kobelo, who was accused of helping to set up the deal, was sentenced to more than four years in a juvenile corrections facility for aggravated robbery and distribution of Xanax.

Kan. teen enters plea in failed $8 Xanax deal killing

BARTON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on new charges after an arrest.

Just before 10p.m. Monday, an officer from the Great Bend Police Department initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle at 23rd and McKinley Street for a traffic violation, according to a media release.

The driver, and only occupant of the vehicle, identified as Aqeisa Koett, age 38, had an outstanding warrant for possession of methamphetamine from a previous narcotics investigation.

During Koett's arrest,&nbsp; police located a plastic baggie containing numerous prescription pills in the vehicle. Koett was also arrested on a requested charged for possession of a controlled substance, according to police.

Koett was transported to the Barton County Jail where she was booked in lieu of $20,000 bond. She had two previous drug convictions in 2018, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Kansas felon jailed on new charge after traffic stop

SUMNER COUNTY —One person died in an accident just before 6:30a.m. Tuesday in Sumner County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1993 Chevy Cavalier driven by&nbsp; Rickie Joe William, 65, Dewie Ok., was eastbound on East U.S. 160 just east of Broadway and&nbsp; struck a pedestrian identified as Joseph Edward Franklin Darling, 48, Atoka, Kansas, who was on the road.

Darling was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to Heritage Funeral Home.

Authorities released no additional details.

Kansas man dies in pedestrian accident 

SALINE COUNTY — A Kansas man is facing charges for a weekend accident that injured a motorcycle rider.

Just before 10:30p.m. Saturday, a 2013 Kawasaki motorcycle driven by Landon Howard, 19, Brookville, was stopped at the light at the intersection of West Iron Ave. and 9th Street in Salina, according to&nbsp;Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester,

An eastbound 2005 Chevrolet Uplander driven by Robert Pirtle, 69, of Salina, struck the motorcycle. 

Pirtle then fled the scene of the accident. A witness gave police a description of the vehicle.

EMS transported Howard to Salina Regional Health Center with a deep laceration and two fractures on his right leg, according to Forrester.

A short time later, a Saline County Sheriff's deputy spotted the Uplander at the intersection of West Ash Street and Broadway Boulevard and conducted a traffic stop for a&nbsp; DUI test on Pirtle.&nbsp;

Deputies arrested him on requested charges of&nbsp;Aggravated battery, Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, Duty to give information and render aid, Driving while suspended, Improper driving on a laned roadway and No proof of insurance.

The motorcycle was destroyed and the Uplander had extensive front driver's side damage, according to Forrester.

Zoo spokeswoman Sarah Gay said the zoo's security team was notified around 3:20 a.m. Tuesday after the blaze started in an external heating source outside the building. She said that crews responded quickly and that the animals have been moved to another building, where they will continue to be monitored by the zoo's veterinary team.

The structure that burned is made of concrete block so little damage was done to the building itself, but it will need a new roof.

KANSAS CITY — The City of Kansas City, Mo., and the Kansas City Chiefs invite all fans to a Chiefs Kingdom Champions Parade and victory rally in downtown KCMO.

According to a news release from the City of Kansas City, Mo., the two-mile-long parade starts at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5. The parade starts on Grand Boulevard at 6th street and heads south to Pershing Road. The parade turns west on Pershing Road to Union Station. The victory rally stage will be in front of Union Station, with the National WWI Museum and Memorial hosting viewing opportunities on its north lawn. All you need to know about Chiefs parade, rally

SALINA&nbsp; — Law enforcement authorities are investigating suspects involved in a chase and crash in Salina following an armed robbery.

At 5:45 a.m. Tuesday, police responded to an armed robbery at E-Z Trip Convenience Store, 100 S. Main in Newton, according to a social media report from police.

Two men had entered the store, armed with firearms. Multiple shots were fired in the store by at least one of the suspects. The store clerk was not injured. The suspects obtained an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing in a vehicle. Officers looked at surveillance video and determined a suspect vehicle description with a tag number. That information was given to surrounding counties and the Kansas Highway Patrol.

About an hour later, Kansas Highway Patrol in Salina located the suspect vehicle and began a pursuit. The vehicle crashed near Salina South High School, and at least one suspect fled on foot. All three individuals are now in custody..

SALINA —Law enforcement authorities tracked down a suspect who fled a car crash early Tuesday near Salina South High School.

Just before 7am, KHP Trooper’s attempted to stop a vehicle that crashed near the school 730 East Magnolia Road, according to Trooper Ben Gardner.

Multiple subjects were inside vehicle at the time of the crash. One&nbsp; subject ran north from the scene, away from high school.&nbsp;

Just before 8a.m., law enforcement reported they had located and placed into custody the suspect, according to Gardner.

Name of the suspect and possible charges have not been released. The KHP did not report any injuries from the crash.

SALINA —Law enforcement authorities are attempting to locate a suspect who ran from a car crash near Salina South High School Tuesday morning.

Multiple subjects were inside vehicle at the time of the crash.

One&nbsp; subject ran north from the scene, away from high school.&nbsp;

Troopers are attempting to locate a reported young black male wearing a grey sweat shirt. Salina South High School has been notified.&nbsp; Expect multiple Troopers in the area.

State party officials said final results would be released later Tuesday and offered assurances that the problem was not a result of “a hack or an intrusion.” Officials were conducting quality checks and verifying results, prioritizing the integrity of the results, the party said in a statement.

The statement came after tens of thousands of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/2ea52b33d206238118686bcf7d855684">voters spent hours Monday night</a>&nbsp;sorting through a field of nearly a dozen candidates who had spent much of the previous year fighting to win the opening contest of the 2020 campaign and, ultimately, the opportunity to take on President Donald Trump this fall.

And Pete Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, was most certain.

“So we don’t know all the results, but we know by the time it’s all said and done, Iowa, you have shocked the nation,” he said. “By all indications, we are going on to New Hampshire victorious.”

Democrats faced the possibility that whatever numbers they ultimately released would be questioned. And beyond 2020, critics began wondering aloud whether the Iowa caucuses, a complicated set of political meetings staged in a state that is whiter and older than the Democratic Party, are a tradition whose time had passed.

The party has tried to accommodate critics, this year by promising to report three different data points about voters’ preferences, presumably improving transparency. But the new system created new headaches.

State party spokeswoman Mandy McClure said it had “found inconsistencies in the reporting of three sets of results,” forcing officials to try to verify results with “underlying data” and the paper trail.

Some of the trouble stemmed from issues with a new mobile app developed to report results to the party. Caucus organizers reported problems downloading the app and other glitches.

Des Moines County Democratic Chair Tom Courtney said the new app created “a mess.” As a result, Courtney said precinct leaders were phoning in results to the state party headquarters, which was too busy to answer their calls in some cases.

Pre-caucus polls suggested Sanders entered the night with a narrow lead, but any of the top four candidates — Sanders, Biden, Warren and Buttigieg — was positioned to score a victory. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who represents neighboring Minnesota, was also claiming momentum, while outsider candidates including entrepreneur Andrew Yang, billionaire activist Tom Steyer and Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard could be factors.

“We know one thing: We are punching above our weight,” Klobuchar said late Monday, promising to keep fighting in New Hampshire.

New voters played a significant role in shaping Iowa’s election.

About one-quarter of all voters reported that they were caucusing for the first time, according to AP VoteCast, a survey of voters who said they planned to take part in Monday’s Democratic caucuses. The first-timers were slightly more likely to support Sanders, Warren or Buttigieg, compared with other candidates.

At the same time, VoteCast found that roughly two-thirds of caucusgoers said supporting a candidate who would fundamentally change how the system in Washington works was important to their vote. That compared to about a third of caucusgoers who said it was more important to support a candidate who would restore the political system to how it was before Trump’s election in 2016.

Not surprisingly, nearly every Iowa Democrat said the ability to beat Trump was an important quality for a presidential nominee. VoteCast found that measure outranked others as the most important quality for a nominee.

The 2020 fight has already played out over myriad distractions, particularly congressional Democrats’ push to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/Trumpimpeachment">impeach Trump</a>, which has often overshadowed the primary and effectively pinned several leading candidates to Washington at the pinnacle of the early campaign season.

For the first time, the Iowa Democratic Party planned to report three sets of results: a tally of caucusgoers’ initial candidate preference; vote totals from the “final alignment” after supporters of lower-ranking candidates were able to make a second choice; and the total number of State Delegate Equivalents each candidate receives.

There is no guarantee that all three will show the same winner when they’re ultimately released.

Just before 9:30p.m. Sunday, police&nbsp; responded to the 9800 Block of Richmond in Kansas City, Missouri to assist EMS with a fireworks accident, according to a media release.

Police learned the victim was&nbsp;&nbsp;attempting to light commercial-grade fireworks in an improvised mortar when one exploded.

The man suffered a catastrophic head injury.&nbsp; EMS transported him to an area hospital where he died. Name of the victim has not been released.

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple charges after a Sunday arrest.

Just before 4:30p.m. deputies were dispatched to the 5000 block of SW Topeka Blvd on a report of a man pointing a firearm at another individual inside a business, according to Sgt. Todd Stallbaumer.

Deputies arrested 47-year-old Keith E. Austin on charges of Attempted Murder, Aggravated Criminal Threat, Aggravated Assault, Disorderly conduct, Possession of a Firearm while Under the Influence of Alcohol, Battery, and Criminal Use of a Weapon, according to Stallbaumer.

Mr. Austin is being held in the Shawnee County Department of Corrections.&nbsp; Authorities have not reported any injuries.

WICHITA, KAN. (AP) — A&nbsp;state oversight board has revoked the law enforcement certification of a former Kansas police officer who is serving time in a sex crime case.

The Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training took the action last month against 36-year-old Casey Lee Wills, of Valley Center. He was sentenced in December to just over five years in prison for two counts of aggravated sexual battery and one count of aggravated domestic battery.

Prosecutors alleged that in October 2017 __ three years after he stopped working for the Wichita Police Department __ he raped one victim who was too impaired to give consent and tried to rape another victim. The rape and attempted rape charges were later amended to the less severe felony charges of aggravated sexual battery.

TOPEKA, Kan. — A tweet from President Trump saying the Kansas City Chiefs had represented Kansas well by winning the Super Bowl was deleted quickly, but Sunflower State lawmakers didn’t let it pass unnoticed Monday.

The Kansas House had a little fun with Trump’s geographical fumble in congratulating the Chiefs on their come-from-behind victory Sunday over the San Francisco 49ers. Trump later tweeted that he was proud of the team and Missouri, where the Chiefs play.

House Speaker Ron Ryckman Jr., a Kansas City-area Republican, had a clerk read Trump’s original tweet as if it were a formal presidential message to the chamber.

When the clerk read, “You represented the Great State of Kansas and, in fact, the entire USA, so well,” House members cheered.

Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly said there’s no rivalry between the two states when it comes to the Chiefs.

“Kansas has always been part of Chiefs Kingdom,” she said in a statement.

The Legislature later canceled Wednesday’s business so members and staff can attend a victory parade in Kansas City, Missouri.

“If you looked license plates at any Chiefs game, just over the line, you’d notice that there are just as many Kansans there as Missourians,” said Kansas Senate President Susan Wagle, a Wichita Republican.

KANSAS CITY —A Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper shot and injured a man Monday following a police pursuit that unfolded over several miles before the suspect vehicle ended up in a ditch, authorities said.

The man was taken by air ambulance to a hospital in Kansas City with a gunshot wound, said Sgt. Andy Bell. His condition wasn't immediately known.

A police officer with the Lone Jack Police Department was pursuing a vehicle at 1:26 p.m. traveling eastbound on U.S. Highway 50. The chase continued for several miles into Johnson County, Missouri, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said in a news release.

The vehicle struck a ditch alongside the roadway after running over spike strips that a trooper had deployed minutes earlier. A preliminary investigation found the suspect got out of his vehicle carrying a long gun and “presented it in a threatening manner,” the agency said.

The trooper, fearing for his safety, fired his weapon, striking the suspect, the agency said. The trooper was not injured.

The officer-involved shooting is being investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control. Other details were not immediately forthcoming.

According to a release from the department, the fire was initially reported as an appliance fire just after 4:30 p.m., but was quickly upgraded to an apartment fire, as firefighters found heavy black smoke pouring from a second floor apartment at the Royal Apartments at 324 East 1st in Hutchinson.

One adult male and two children were taken from the scene to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for further evaluation. Their injuries were not life-threatening.

There was heavy fire damage in the apartment where it started, with smoke and water damage in four other units in that building.

The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced families. The fire's cause is still under investigation.

Just after 8p.m. January 27, police responded to a carjacking call at Towne East Square, 7700 East Kellogg in Wichita, according to officer Charley Davidson.

A 57-year-old woman at the scene told police that as she was leaving work and walking to her vehicle, a 13-year-old boy and another unknown suspect approached. The 13-year-old demanded her keys and battered her. The suspect took the keys and fled her 2003 Buick Park Avenue.&nbsp; The victim only had minor injuries, according to Davidson.
