KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Tanner Bibee pitched shutout ball into the seventh inning, Kyle Mazardo hit a two-run homer and Gabriel Arias and Daniel Schneemann added solo shots as the Cleveland Guardians beat the Kansas City Royals 6-2 on Sunday.

Bibee (1-0) gave up no runs and two hits in 6 2/3 innings with two strikeouts and two walks. The right-hander bounced back after he was scheduled to make the opening day start for Cleveland on Thursday, but was scratched because of an illness.

Royals starter Michael Wacha (0-1) threw 87 pitches over four innings and allowed one run and four hits with two strikeouts and four walks. None of Kansas City's starting pitchers got past the fifth inning in any game during the three-game season-opening series.

Mazardo's home run traveled 417 feet nearly into the right field fountains off Sam Long to give the Guardians a 3-0 lead. It was his second home run of the series.

Arias' homer in the sixth made it 4-0. He started in place of six-time All-Star José Ramírez, who missed the game due to a sprained right wrist he suffered on a slide in Saturday’s game.

Cleveland took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Arias' sacrifice fly that scored Carlos Santana.

Schneemann's homer in the eighth extended the Guardians' lead to 6-0.

Bobby Witt Jr. hit an RBI single and Hunter Renfroe drew a bases-loaded walk in the eighth for the Royals.

The Royals had the tying run at the plate in the eighth, but Hunter Gaddis forced a groundout to first to end the rally.

Steven Kwan went 3 for 5, all of those hits being singles, and had six hits over the series.

The Guardians send RHP Luis Ortiz to the mound to start a three-game series at San Diego on Monday. Kansas City travels to Milwaukee on Monday with LHP Kris Bubic on the hill.

🏀 K-State women's basketball season ends in Sweet 16

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - The 24th-ranked Fort Hays State baseball team evened up its series with No. 3 Central Missouri Saturday afternoon with a 9-4 road victory. The Tigers (21-7, 16-3 MIAA) never trailed in the contest, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning before piling on six runs over the final three frames. The five-run loss is the largest margin of defeat for the Mules (21-7, 12-4 MIAA) this season.

The win is Fort Hays State's first victory over Central Missouri since 2016 (2/26/16), snapping a 28-game losing streak overall and a 19-game road losing streak to the Mules (last road win 3/12/11). It is Fort Hays State's second win over a top-five ranked team under head coach Justin Wichert&nbsp;after beating No. 4 Missouri Southern in 2023 (4/2/23).

The Tigers struck early with three runs on three hits in the top of the first. Cesar Saavedra&nbsp;was hit by a pitch on the fourth delivery of the game before Tony Moore&nbsp;reached on a single. Trey DeGarmo then drove in the pair with a ground-rule double to right center, giving Fort Hays State a 2-0 lead. Derek Woolwine&nbsp;kept things rolling with a single to center, plating DeGarmo to push the advantage to 3-0.

The home team answered right back with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the inning, but Paul Panduro&nbsp;was able to get out of the frame with the lead after getting a pair of groundouts with a runner in scoring position.

⚾ No. 24 Tigers top No. 3 Mules in Warrensburg

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr. hit a go-ahead RBI double in the seventh inning after Maikel Garcia tied it with a homer four batters earlier to help lead the Kansas City Royals over the Cleveland Guardians 4-3 on Saturday.

Garcia led off the seventh with a 405-foot homer off Paul Sewald (0-1). Cavan Biggio followed with a single and was replaced by pinch-runner Dairon Blanco, who stole second. With two outs, Witt lined a double to left to score Blanco with the go-ahead run.

Guardians six-time All-Star José Ramírez left in the sixth inning with a sprained right wrist after he was hurt in the third inning while attempting to steal second base. Gabriel Arias replaced Ramírez at third base.

Bo Naylor gave the Indians a 1-0 lead on an RBI single in the second, and Carlos Santana scored Steven Kwan on a sacrifice fly in the third.

Kwan's solo homer in the fifth put Cleveland up 3-1.

Royals starter Seth Lugo threw five innings and allowed three earned runs and four hits and struck out four with three walks. Daniel Lynch IV (1-0) followed Lugo and threw two perfect innings for the win. Carlos Estévez walked one and struck out one in the ninth to earn his first save for Kansas City.

Guardians starter Gavin Williams allowed two runs and four hits in five innints with one walk and two strikeouts.

Salvador Perez had RBI singles in the fourth and sixth innings.

The Royals' comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning was powered by Garcia's homer and Witt's double.

The top four hitters for Kansas City — Jonathan India, Witt, Vinnie Pasquantino and Perez — went 5 for 14 with five RBIs.

Fort Hays State 2, Emporia State 1 The Tigers and Hornets played to a scoreless tie through five innings before the Tigers finally broke through on the scoreboard in the sixth. Emporia State 12, Fort Hays State 1 (5 inn.) A pair of infield singles to open the bottom of the first inning triggered a big offensive surge from the Hornets in the second game of the day. ESU went on to score four runs on five hits in the first inning to take a 4-0 lead early. They kept adding on in the next two innings, scoring once in the second and seven times in the third to lead 12-0.

The Tigers could not get much going offensively in the game and only got runners into scoring position in the fourth and fifth innings. The cashed in on a Hornet error in the fifth as&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/jules-bosco/8199">Jules Bosco</a>&nbsp;drove in a run on a ground out, but it was too little, too late as the run rule came into play.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/lilliana-ramirez-johnson/8189">Lilliana Ramirez-Johnson</a>&nbsp;had FHSU's only two hits in the contest.

🥎 Strong outing from Egger helps Tigers split at Emporia State

SALINA - The Hays High softball team opened the 2025
season with a pair of wins over Olathe East Saturday at the Salina South fields. The Indians took game one
9-3 then took the second contest 10-5.

Game 1: Hays 9, Olathe East 3
 Hays used a six-run third inning to take the lead for good. Adeline Kippes
drove in the first run when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Riley
Dreher was also hit by a pitch which gave the Indians a 2-1 lead. Brooklynn Dinkel
drove in two with a double. Another run scored on an Alyse Zimmerman groundout.
Dinkel scored the final run of the frame on a passed ball.

Dreher added a two-run triple an inning later to push the lead
to 8-1. Zimmerman had a bunt single in the fifth which scored Dinkel for a 9-1
lead.

Dreher allowed one run on three hits with seven strikeouts
and four walks over four innings for the win. Lanie Becker pitched the final
three innings.

Game 2: Hays 10, Olathe East 5
 The Indians scored in every inning but one and never trailed. Four of the runs
came off of Hawks errors.

Hays scored three in the first, one in the third then two in
the fourth and fifth for an 8-0 lead. They added another in the top of the
sixth before Olathe East answered with four in the bottom of the sixth to pull
within 9-4. Alyse Zimmerman drove in an insurance run with an RBI triple in the
top of the seventh.

Riley Dreher had three hits and scored three runs. Brynlee

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Fort Hays State Tennis battled to its first win in MIAA play since the 2017-18 season on Saturday with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Missouri Western. The win snapped the long 47-match drought in conference play, lifting the Tigers to 10-3 overall and 1-1 in the MIAA. The Griffons fell to 3-5 overall and 0-1 in the MIAA.

Fort Hays State's last win in MIAA play was on March 13, 2018 by a score of 5-4 over Emporia State. The streak ended just over two weeks past seven calendar years. The Tigers were already knocking at the door on Friday in a competitive loss to a perennially solid Northwest Missouri State team, but they finally broke through on Saturday when&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-tennis/roster/irina-alfonso/8115">Irina Alfonso</a>&nbsp;went toe-to-toe Johanna Priedite in an epic singles match that lasted about three hours. With the team score knotted at 3-3, Alfonso forced a third set in her singles match and went on to win, snapping a six-match losing streak to the Griffons. FHSU's last win over MWSU was in 2017 by a score of 5-4 in Hays. It was their first win in St. Joseph since 2014.

Aside from Alfonso being the ultimate ender of the Tigers' losing string in conference play, five other Tigers picked up big wins to get FHSU and Alfonso to the winner-take-all scenario in the No. 2 singles match.

🎾 Alfonso’s marathon singles win lifts Tigers to 4-3 in over Griffons

LARNED - The TMP-Marian Monarchs baseball (2-0) team opened the season with
a doubleheader sweep of the Larned Indians Friday in Larned.

GAME 1: TMP 8, Larned 0 TMP’s Ty Schmeidler and Grant Nehls combined on a no-hitter,
and Caden Dinkel drove in a pair of runs as the Monarchs picked up the 8-0
victory.

The Monarchs got the scoring started early, scoring two runs
in the top half of the first inning.

Ian Nehls doubled with one out, and then, following a Larned
error, scored on a double steal, giving TMP the 1-0 lead.

Ty Schmeidler also scored a run on an error in the inning,
putting TMP up 2-0.

TMP’s lone run in the second inning came on a wild pitch.

After back-to-back scoreless innings, TMP got back on the
scoreboard, scoring three times in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth.

Jacob Seib led off the fifth with a walk and eventually came
in to score on back-to-back errors by the Indians.

TMP added a second run on an error that scored Ty Schmeidler,
who had doubled, making it 5-0 TMP.

Their final run of the inning game on a Connor Breit fielder’s
choice that made it 6-0 TMP.

In the top of the sixth inning, TMP’s Cadel Dinkel drove in
a pair of runs with a double to left, putting the Monarchs up 8-0.

Dinkel finished two-for-four with two RBI’s. Ty Schmeidler
scored three times.

Schmeidler was awarded the win. He allowed just four walks
with six strikeouts in three and two-thirds scoreless innings.

Freshman Grant Nehls allowed just two walks and struck out five
in three and a third innings as the two combined for a no-hitter.

GAME 2: TMP 11, Larned 4 The Monarchs scored in all but one inning en route to an
11-4 win over the Indians in game two.

TMP put up three runs in the first inning. With one out, Ian
Nehls walked, Ty Schmeidler singled, and reached third on an error. Nehls
scored on the play, making it 1-0 TMP.

Caden Dinkel followed with an RBI single and Grant Nehls
added an RBI double as TMP opened up a 3-0 lead through the first inning.

The Monarchs added two more in the second inning.

With two outs, and a pair of Monarchs on base after two
walks in the inning, Dinkel doubled to right, giving the Monarchs a 5-0 lead.

Larned answered with three of their own in the bottom of the
second, and then, after a scoreless third inning, TMP led 5-3 heading into the
fourth.

Grant Nehls connected on his first career home run in the
top of the first inning, giving TMP a 6-3 lead. 

Larned was able to get a run back in the bottom of the
inning, making it 6-4 TMP.

The Monarchs added another solo run on an Ian Nehls RBI
single.

With the bases loaded in the sixth, a walk by Isaac Purinton
gave TMP the 8-4 lead.

Adler Brown added an RBI groundout in the inning to put TMP
up 9-4.

In the seventh inning, TMP added a run on a Connor Breit
Fielder’s choice and a bases-loaded walk by Isaac Purinton, helping the
Monarchs secure the 11-4 win.

Dinkel, Brown and Grant Nehls all collected two hits, and
Dinkel collected three more RBIs.

Purinton got the win for TMP. He allowed one unearned run in
three hitless innings of relief. He struck out one and walked five.

⚾ TMP-Marian sweeps Larned in season opener

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs collected 14 extra base hits,
including five home runs, on their way to a pair of run-rule victories over the
Russell Broncos on Friday in the season opener.

GAME 1: TMP 16, Russell 1 In the top half of the first inning, TMP&nbsp; (2-0, 2-0 MCL)&nbsp; starter Brynn Rebel
worked around a leadoff single, thanks to a double play and a strikeout.

Rebel allowed only a second-inning run on a wild pitch, with
a pair of hits and a walk, while striking out five in the victory.

In the bottom of the first TMP’s Bria Windholz singled home
Rebel for the game’s first run. One batter later, freshman Brynn Schoepf
connected on her first career homerun, putting the Monarchs up 4-0.

After Russell got a run back in the top of the second, Rebel
connected on a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning, putting TMP up
6-1.

Brooke Koenigsman added a seventh run for the Monarchs with
a double, and then two batters later, freshman Paige Koenigsman connected on
her first career home run, giving the Monarchs a 9-1 lead through two innings.

Teagan Gottschalk led off the third inning with a double,
and the courtesy runner came in to score on a dropped third strike, putting TMP
up 11-1.

Rebel singled in her third RBI of the game, extending TMP's
lead to 12-1. A Windholz sacrifice fly made it 13-1. 

Brooke Koenigsman followed that with her second RBI double,
putting TMP up 14-1.

The Monarchs then scored on an error, and with the bases
loaded, Raegan Allen was hit by a pitch, securing the Monarchs' 16-1 win in
three innings.

Rebel, Windholz and Schoepf each drove in three runs for the
Monarchs.

GAME 2: TMP 16, Russell 0 The Monarchs scored 10 runs in the second inning and cruised
to a game two win behind three shutout innings from Bria Windholz, who drove in
three runs for a second straight game.

Windholz worked out of a bit of a jam in the first. Russell
got a pair of two-out singles put with runners at the corners, but Windholz
induced a groundout to the first baseman, keeping the game scoreless.

In the bottom of the frame TMP wasted little time getting on
the board. 

After the first two hitters reached base, Brooke Koenigsman
scored two runs on an RBI triple, putting TMP up 2-0.

Windholz drove her home on a groundout, giving TMP a 3-0
lead.

Following back-to-back walks, TMP scored on a passed ball
and two runs on an error, making it 6-0 Monarchs through the first inning.

Schoepf reached base on an error by the Russell catcher to lead
off the second inning and came all the way around to score, making it 7-0 TMP.

Brooke Koenigsman followed that with her second home run of
the day, giving the Monarchs the 8-0 lead.

Two batters later, Paige Simpson connected on her first career
home run, driving in two for a 10-0 lead.

Nicole Schumacher doubled in a run and then scored on a

TOPEKA, Kan. – Fort Hays State saw its nine-game win streak snapped on Friday in an MIAA doubleheader at Washburn. The Tigers had the lead in game one, but a key miscue led to an Ichabod comeback win and they went on to sweep the doubleheader by scores of 3-2 and 3-0. FHSU moved to 20-8 overall and 5-3 in the MIAA, while the Ichabods moved to 24-13 and 6-4 in the MIAA.

Washburn 3, Fort Hays State 2 Fort Hays State had a 2-0 lead going to the bottom of the fifth inning in the first contest, but saw Washburn rally with three runs over the next two innings to escape with a 3-2 win on its home field. A key error in the bottom of the fifth extended the inning on what should have been the third out when the Tigers were up 2-1. Washburn followed with an RBI double to knot the score at 2-2. Ichabods pitcher Alexis Tanguma then had the decisive blow in the game, leading off the sixth inning with a solo home run to put WU in front 3-2.

The Tigers took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the first. With the bases loaded,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/madison-pierce/8188">Madison Pierce</a>&nbsp;scored on a wild pitch. 🏃‍♀️ Tigers open outdoor season with record-breaking performances

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - Four fielding errors doomed the 24th-ranked Fort Hays State baseball team in Friday's&nbsp; series opener at No. 3 Central Missouri, with the Mules winning 7-2. The Tigers (20-7, 15-3 MIAA) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Mules (21-6, 12-3 MIAA) scored seven unanswered runs down the stretch to seal the win.

Tony Moore&nbsp;got the Tigers going with a double in the top of the first. Derrek Woolwine&nbsp;later worked a six-pitch walk with two outs to bring Brady Kreutzer&nbsp;to the plate, who delivered with a two-RBI double to left center.

Ty Riley retired the side in order in the bottom of the first before working out of trouble to leave the bases loaded in the second. UCM's starter Evan O'Toole settled in after the first, facing the minimum in each of the next four innings.

Central Missouri evened the score with a pair of unearned runs in the third before taking a 3-2 lead with another run in the fifth inning. Fort Hays State had a chance to tie in the top of the sixth but stranded a man at third. The Tigers then had two on with no outs in the eighth, but Mules reliever JD McReynolds escaped the jam with three consecutive strikeouts.

The Mules then added to its lead with four runs on four hits and two Tiger errors in the bottom of the eighth before McReynolds retired the side in order in the ninth to lock down the win.

Riley (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season after allowing just one earned run (three total) on five hits and five walks while striking out five over 5 1/3 innings of work. Kaleb Carpenter&nbsp;allowed four runs (three earned) in 2 2/3 innings of relief, giving up five hits and walking one. The Tigers (20-7, 15-3 MIAA) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Mules (21-6, 12-3 MIAA) scored seven unanswered runs down the stretch to seal the win.Tony Moore&nbsp;got the Tigers going with a double in the top of the first. Derrek Woolwine&nbsp;later worked a six-pitch walk with two outs to bring Brady Kreutzer&nbsp;to the plate, who delivered with a two-RBI double to left center.Ty Riley retired the side in order in the bottom of the first before working out of trouble to leave the bases loaded in the second. UCM's starter Evan O'Toole settled in after the first, facing the minimum in each of the next four innings.Central Missouri evened the score with a pair of unearned runs in the third before taking a 3-2 lead with another run in the fifth inning. Fort Hays State had a chance to tie in the top of the sixth but stranded a man at third. The Tigers then had two on with no outs in the eighth, but Mules reliever JD McReynolds escaped the jam with three consecutive strikeouts.The Mules then added to its lead with four runs on four hits and two Tiger errors in the bottom of the eighth before McReynolds retired the side in order in the ninth to lock down the win.Riley (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season after allowing just one earned run (three total) on five hits and five walks while striking out five over 5 1/3 innings of work. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kyle Manzardo had a two-run double in the 10th inning to tie the club record for most RBIs on opening day and the Cleveland Guardians defeated the Kansas City Royals 7-4 on Thursday.

Manzardo joined Tris Speaker (1925) and Leon Wagner (1964) with four RBIs on opening day.

Manzardo also become the third MLB player with a double, triple and homer on opening day, joining Don Baylor (1973), Gee Walker (1937).

Steven Kwan led off the 10th with a run-scoring double. With two outs and Kwan at third, reliever Sam Long intentionally walked Carlos Santana to face Manzardo, who drove in both runners.

Emmanuel Clase took the win and Paul Sewald earned the save.

Vinnie Pasquantino broke the scoreless tie with a three-run homer in the third for Kansas City.

The Guardians answered with a run in the fourth. Manzardo hit a one-out triple and Jhonkensy Noel drove him in with a sacrifice fly.

The Guardians got another run in the fifth on another sacrifice fly. Cleveland put runners on first and second with no outs and Jose Ramirez drove in Gabriel Arias with the second run.

Manzardo homered on the first pitch he saw in the sixth to give the Guardians a 4-3.

The Royals tied it at 4-all in the bottom of the ninth off Clase on Michael Massey’s sacrifice fly.

The Royals had runners on first and third and no outs in the eighth, with the top of the order up. But Jonathan India hit into a fielder's choice, resulting in a double play.

Manzardo had 12 doubles, no triples and five home runs in 145 at bats in his debut last season.

Gavin Williams of Cleveland is scheduled to face Seth Lugo for Kansas City when the clubs resume the three-game series on Saturday.
