HAYS, Kan. - Fort Hays State University Athletics will pay tribute to the 1974 Tiger Baseball team for its historic achievement prior to the 7 p.m. game against Northwest Missouri State University on April 25 at Larks Park. The recognition will be a part of the annual Pack the Park event. The team was the first at FHSU to play in a national baseball tournament, specifically the NAIA National Baseball Tournament, now known as the NAIA College World Series.

That season the Tigers won the NAIA District 10 Playoffs, defeating Bethany College, Emporia State, and Benedictine College to reach the NAIA Area 3 Playoffs in Oklahoma City. The Tigers then defeated Kearney State and Southeastern Oklahoma twice to reach the NAIA championship site in St. Joseph, Mo. They fell to Sam Houston State and Wisconsin-Oshkosh at the championship site, wrapping their season at 26-18 overall. The Tigers finished the year at No. 7 in the NAIA national rankings.

It has been 51 years since the 1974 season, yet all 16 players on the team's postseason roster will be in attendance and recognized at Larks Park on Friday night prior to the annual Pack the Park game. The team featured just one senior and the rest were underclassmen.

Guiding the Tigers to the national tournament was Earl Hobbs (1929-2013) who coached the Tigers from 1967-1976. Both of his assistant coaches, Rod Ruder (1951-2021) and Frank Leo, were graduates of FHSU and were eventually inducted into the Tiger Sports Hall of Fame. "We were truly fortunate to have had the opportunity to play for them," commented Brad Rumble. "What they did to help the team reach the national tournament and become part of FHSU baseball history is something we will never forget."

The NCAA passed rules Monday that would upend decades of precedent by allowing colleges to pay their athletes per terms of a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nil-ncaa-house-settlement-1dc0f36ee94134d6ace86fd0bd66f290">multibillion-dollar lawsuit settlement</a>&nbsp;expected to go into effect this summer.

The nine proposals passed by the NCAA board were largely expected but still mark a defining day in the history of college sports. An athlete’s ability to be&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-athletes-amateur-ncaa-79e481c957d73a545fee24cda06e4f87">paid directly by his or her university</a>&nbsp;is on track to be enshrined in a rulebook that has forbidden that kind of relationship for decades.

For the NCAA rules to officially go into effect, the changes prescribed by the House settlement still have to be granted final&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-lawsuit-settlement-roster-limits-2cdd17ee4b6081dd8892b3dc998d03e8">approval by a federal judge</a>, whose hearing earlier this month led to questions about potential tweaks before the new guidelines are supposed to go into play on July 1.

The changes will eliminate around 150 rules and alter many others in the NCAA’s sprawling rulebook. They essentially codify measures set up by the settlement, including:

—Modifying bylaws to allow schools to pay the athletes directly.

—Eliminating scholarship limits for teams, while also&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ncaa-lawsuit-settlement-nil-d162a40c71be28a380c75d6c8202807a">setting roster limits</a>&nbsp;that are designed to replace the scholarship caps. Some details of the roster limits, which were a key sticking point in the April 7 hearing, will be finalized later.

—Establishing annual reporting requirements for schools that pay athletes; a payment pool is set to be approximately $20.5 million for the biggest schools beginning next academic year.

—Setting up a clearinghouse for all name, image and likeness (NIL) deals that come from third parties and are worth $600 or more.

BOSTON (AP) — Sharon Lokedi broke the Boston Marathon course record, and fellow Kenyan John Korir joined his brother as a race champion on Monday as the city celebrated the 250th anniversary of the start of the Revolutionary War.

Lokedi, who ran for the University of Kansas from 2015-2019, outran two-time defending champion Hellen Obiri over the final mile a year after losing a sprint down Boylston Street to her in one of the closest finishes in race history. Lokedi finished in an unofficial 2 hours, 17 minutes, 22 seconds — 19 seconds ahead of Obiri and more than 2 1/2 minutes faster than the previous Boston best.

Six months after winning Chicago, Korir finished in 2:04:45 — the second-fastest winning time in race history as the runners took advantage of perfect marathon weather to conquer the 26.2 miles from Hopkinton to Boston’s Copley Square.

After crossing the line, Korir was greeted by his older brother, 2012 Boston winner Wesley Korir. Although the race has been won by a pair of unrelated John Kelleys and two different Robert Cheruiyots, the Korirs are the first brothers — or relatives of any kind — to win the world's oldest and most prestigious annual marathon.

Conner Mantz of Provo, Utah, finished fourth after losing a three-way sprint to the finish with Alphonce Felix Simbu of Tanzania and Cybrian Kotut of Kenya. Simbu was second and Kotut was third.

Korir ran without his bib showing, pulling it out of his running tights as he sprinted down Boylston Street.

Reenactors on horseback, accompanied by a fife and drum playing “Yankee Doodle,” helped start the festivities and add a bit of levity when Paul Revere’s horse was spooked by the finish line decal on the street and stopped. The actor portraying the colonial silversmith and patriot had to hop off and walk the last few steps himself as the small early crowd laughed and clapped.

After reading a proclamation, Revere gently tugged the horse the rest of the way before riding off to more ceremonies commemorating the midnight ride on April 19, 1775, that warned the colonists in Lexington and Concord that the British were on the march.

Marcel Hug of Switzerland had no such trouble completing the course, zooming into Copley Square in 1:21:34 for his eighth Boston wheelchair title. He beat two-time winner Daniel Romanchuk by more than four minutes in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/boston-marathon-wheelchair-bob-hall-0426d27b488fbb668c04523a391d655d">50th anniversary of Bob Hall’s pioneering push</a>&nbsp;to add a wheelchair division to the race.

“It means a lot to win this year, 50 years of wheelchairs in Boston,” Hug said. “For me, it will take some time to realize what it means, eight times wins. It’s such an incredible number.”

Susannah Scaroni of the United States won the women’s wheelchair race for the second time, finishing in 1:35:20. Her victory guaranteed that the “Star-Spangled Banner” would play on Boylston Street in Copley Square on Patriots’ Day, the state holiday that commemorates the first shots of the Revolutionary War&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lexington-concord-battles-250-independence-history-debate-031df77dc1cfa5cf669b6694dfe509ee">250 years ago Saturday</a>.

Former KU star wins Boston Marathon in record time

The undefeated TMP-Marian Monarchs are ranked No. 1 in Class 2-1A in the latest rankings from the Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches.

Great Bend is the only other area school ranked. The Panthers sit at No. 4 in Class 5A.

DETROIT (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr. hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the 10th inning, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Detroit Tigers 4-3 Sunday to stop a six-game losing streak.

With the score 3-3, Jonathan India's groundout off Tyler Holton (1-2) advanced automatic runner Drew Waters to third, and Witt hit a 280-foot fly to left. Waters scored headfirst ahead of Riley Greene's throw.

Carlos Estévez (1-0) intentionally walked Greene to put runners on the corners with two outs in the bottom half, then retired Dillon Dingler on a popup.

Kansas City went 2-8 on its trip and is 9-14. Detroit had won three straight.

Detroit left fielder Kerry Carpenter left the game after the eighth inning because of right hamstring soreness.

Tigers ace Tarik Skubal allowed two runs and seven hits in five innings, while Royals starter Michael Wacha gave up two runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 inning

Hunter Pasquantino and Drew Waters built a 2-0 lead with RBI singles in the second, but consecutive, two-out run-scoring singles by Carpenter and Zach McKinstry tied the score inthe fifth.

McKinstry's RBI single in the seventh ended Daniel Lynch IV's scoreless streak at 31 innings.

Mark Canha tied the score in the eighth with an RBI single after Witt reached second on a throwing error by third baseman Javier Báez.

With the bases loaded in the seventh, Salvador Perez scooped Greene's grounded and start an inning-ending 3-2-3 double play.

Skubal is 11-1 with a 1.96 ERA in 18 starts at home since the start of the 2024 season.

WICHITA, Kan. - The 23rd-ranked Fort Hays State baseball team secured a series win at Newman with a doubleheader sweep Friday at McCarthy Field, winning 8-0 in the opener before taking the nightcap 12-6. The Tigers improved to 29-11 overall and 23-6 MIAA play after taking the series two games to one, while the Jets are now 10-30 on the year and 6-24 in league action.

The Tigers are now tied with Central Missouri atop the MIAA standings with seven games to play in the regular season. FHSU can finish no lower than fourth in the final standings, which would tie its best ever finish since joining the MIAA in 2007 (Fourth in 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011).

Game 1: #23 Fort Hays State 8, Newman 0 Paul Panduro&nbsp;hurled his best game of the season, tossing eight-plus scoreless innings and allowing only two hits. He retired eight in a row in the middle innings and faced the minimum in his final four frames. The senior's sole blemish was six walks, but the righty was able to work out of trouble each time.

Freshman Tony Moore&nbsp;gave the Tigers the early 1-0 lead with a home run in the first plate appearance of the ballgame. Moore then hit his third home run of the series two innings later, making it 2-0 with a leadoff long ball in the top of the third.

After six straight Tigers were retired leading into the fifth inning, Moore again sparked the offense with a walk. Isaiah Ural&nbsp;followed with a single before Trey DeGarmo&nbsp;worked another free base, loading the bases for Jose Cintron who&nbsp;delivered a two-RBI single into left field, doubling the lead to 4-0. Brady Kreutzer&nbsp;&nbsp;kept things rolling with another two-RBI base knock, this time to right field to give the Tigers a 6-0 advantage.

Three more base hits in the seventh inning helped FHSU tack on two more runs. Cintron beat out a bunt single before Kreutzer doubled, putting a pair in scoring position. One run came in to score on an RBI groundout before Cesar Saavedra&nbsp;plated FHSU's eighth run with a single to center.

Panduro (3-3) attempted to finish the complete game shutout before walking a pair in the bottom of the ninth. FHSU then went to Landyn Sterling&nbsp;out of the bullpen, who promptly retired the side in order to complete the win.

The pair advanced 90 feet on a wild pitch before Herrmann later scored on another wild pitch. Isaiah Ural&nbsp;later plated a run on an RBI groundout before DeGarmo drove in a pair with a two-RBI triple into the gap in left center.

The home team was able to tie the game with a three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth before regaining a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Fort Hays State answered back in a big way in the seventh, scoring six runs on five hits and two walks. Herrmann and Howell again opened the rally with back-to-back singles before Derek Woodwine&nbsp;worked a walk to load the bases.

Burgos helped the Tigers go back on top 7-6 with a two-RBI single to right before two more runs came around on sacrifice flies from Moore and Ural. Zane Knox&nbsp;&nbsp;then made it 11-6 with a two-RBI double to right.

Fort Hays State added an insurance run in the top of the ninth when Moore led off with a triple into the gap in left center and later scored on a ground out from DeGarmo.

That was more than enough for Kaleb Carpenter, who came on in relief to throw the final six innings of work. The junior retired the final 10 batters he faced, moving to 4-2 on the year after picking up the win. Carpenter struck out a season-high eight batters while allowing two runs on three hits and one walk.

Trevor Baugh made the start, tossing three-plus innings while giving up four runs on five hits and one walk alongside three strikeouts.

The Tigers close out their home schedule with four games next week . DODGE CITY - The Hays High softball team dropped the final two games of the Dodge City Classic on Friday, losing 9-1 to Goddard Eisenhower then 12-0 to Maize South.

The Indians go 1-4 at the Classic and are now 9-4 on the season.

Goddard Eisenhower 9, Hays 1 The Tigers took control early, scoring eight runs in the bottom of the first.

The Indians scored their only run on an error in the fifth.

Lanie Becker had Hays High's only hit of the game with a single in the second.

Jaylee Summers allowed nine runs (eight earned ) on 12 hits with five strikeouts and two walks and took the loss.

Maize South 12, Hays 0 (5 innings) The Mavericks scored in every inning. The took control with four in the second then blew it open with a five-run fourth.

Hays had four hits in the game and committed four errors.

Riley Dreher allowed all 12 runs (six earned) on 10 hits with two walks and two strikeouts over four innings and suffered the loss.

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Fort Hays State Softball fell twice to No. 24 ranked Pittsburg State on Friday. The No. 24 ranked Gorillas swept the doubleheader by scores of 7-1 and 7-3, moving to 37-11 overall and 18-4 in the MIAA. The Tigers moved to 23-19 overall and 8-14 in the MIAA.

Game 1: Pittsburg State 7, Fort Hays State 1 Pittsburg State methodically pulled away for a win in the first contest of the day, scoring runs in each inning from the first through fifth, building a 7-0 lead. The Tigers struggled to get much going offensively against Ava Laurent, who took a no-hitter into the fifth inning before&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/paige-thexton/8200">Paige Thexton</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/kaydawn-haag/8195">Kaydawn Haag</a>&nbsp;had back-to-back hits.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/madison-pierce/8188">Madison Pierce</a>&nbsp;generated the only Tiger run with a solo home run in the sixth.

A two-run homer gave the Gorillas an early 2-0 lead through one inning. They added single runs in the second, third, and fourth, then tacked on two more in the fifth.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/savanah-egger/8183">Savanah Egger</a>&nbsp;kept the Gorillas scoreless in the sixth and finished the game with six strikeouts in a complete-game loss.

Laurent threw the first six innings for the Gorillas and recorded six strikeouts. She allowed just three hits and walked one, moving to 16-4 overall for the season. Chelsea Belville threw the final inning and recorded one strikeout.

Game 2: Pittsburg State 7, Fort Hays State 3 Pittsburg State jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one inning, but the Tigers put together a strong rally in the fourth inning to pull even with three runs of their own. But, the stalemate was short lived as the Gorillas scored four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead back 7-3 and went on to win by that score.

Three-straight singles by the Gorillas to open their half of the first inning set up the opportunity for their early burst of runs. Amaya Snyder singled home the first run and then a pair of bases-loaded walks plated another pair of runs.

The Gorillas put the pressure right back on the Tigers with a leadoff double to start their half of the fourth. Alleyna Rushing pushed the Gorillas back in front with an RBI single, then later in the inning with two outs Snyder delivered the big blow with a three-run home run. PSU went hitless over its final two innings at the plate, but the Tigers mustered only one hit the rest of the way.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/morgan-schmidt/8190">Morgan Schmidt</a>&nbsp;threw a complete game for the Tigers, striking out two batters. Jayden Standeford picked up the win in relief for the Gorillas, benefitting from her team taking the lead in the bottom of the fourth. She picked up the final two outs of the FHSU half of the fourth. PSU starter Aydenne Brown pitched 3 1/3 innings and allowed all three runs, while Lexi Franklin threw two innings of relief work and Chelsea Beville threw one.

Fort Hays State is now in a four-way tie for eighth place with Nebraska-Kearney, Northwest Missouri State, and Northeastern State in the MIAA standings going into the final week of play. The top 10 teams will qualify for the MIAA Tournament, which will be hosted by Fort Hays State University at Fleharty Family Field in Hays. Fort Hays State hosts Nebraska-Kearney in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 26 to wrap up regular season play.

DETROIT (AP) — Riley Greene broke out of an extended slump with three hits and two RBIs to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 6-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Thursday night.

The Royals lost their fourth straight game and have dropped six of seven.

Greene, who had one hit and 18 strikeouts in his previous 32 at-bats entering the game, popped out to short in the first inning before RBI singles in the third and fifth innings. He added an infield single in the seventh.

Spencer Torkelson had two hits and drove in three runs for Detroit, which had lost three of four.

Reese Olson (2-1) worked five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and two walks with five strikeouts. Tommy Kahnle earned his third save.

Maikel Garcia had an RBI single in the eighth inning for the Royals. Former Tiger Michael Lorenzen (1-3) gave up four runs on seven hits and three walks with three strikeouts.

Kansas City hitting coach Alec Zumwalt was ejected in the ninth inning for arguing balls and strikes.

After Detroit jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third, the Royals loaded the bases with one out in the fourth. But, Drew Walters struck on on three pitches from Olson, and Kyle Isbel popped out to left on the first pitch he face.

Torkelson, who hit .219 last season and spent 2 1/2 months in Triple-A, is batting .286 with six homers and 16 RBIs in 20 games.

Royals LHP Cole Ragans (1-0, 2.28) will face Tigers rookie RHP Jackson Jobe (1-0, 3.00) in the second game of a four-game set.

CENTER – The Hays High baseball team lost twice at Clay Center Thursday, 8-7 and
4-0. The Indians have now dropped three-straight and fall to 6-4 on the season.

Game 1: Clay Center 8, Hays 7
 Hays scored four in the first and two in the second to build an early 6-1 lead
but the Tigers answered with five in the fifth to take a 7-6 lead. After the
Indians scored a run in the top of the sixth, Clay Center answered with a two-out
RBI single in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead. HHS got a leadoff
single in the seventh but the next three batters were retired.

Rhoades got the Indians on the board with a one-out RBI double in the first.
Johnny Cano later scored on a wild pitch. Ian McGuire added an RBI single and Bennet
Smith drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Smtih drew a bases loaded walk and Rhoades scored on a wild pitch to push the

⚾ Indians swept at Clay Center

GREAT
BEND – The Hays High girls finished second and boys third at Thursday’s Jack Bowman Track and Field Invitational hosted by Great Bend high school. The girls scored 118.75
points, 43.25 behind first place Andale. The boys scored 120 points and were
three back of second-place Andale and 13 behind first place Bishop Carroll.

The
girls won five events and were led by sophomore Lyndi Zimmerman who broke the school
record in the 100 hurdles (14.57). The previous school record was 14.81 was set by Kristin Fleharty in 2008. Zimmerman now has the fastest time in Class 5A and the second fastest in all classes. She was also on the first-place 4x100 relay along
with Mariah Hallam, Lynsi Kanak and Kamryn McCall. Their time of 49.58 is the second fastest in 5A.

The
other girls first place finishers were Katie Linenberger in the high jump (5-6), Zoe
Winter in the shot put (37-9.50) and Aralen Maupin in the 400 (1:01.96).

The
boys had three first place finishes. Kamani Jones won the high jump (6-4). He finished second in the long jump and triple jump as well as the 4x100 relay. Jack Zeller
won the discus (158-7) and Dalton Meyers the javelin (168-8).

Among
the second place finishes for the Hays girls was Lynsi Kanek in the long
jump, Brooke Bieker the triple jump and Rylen Harrington the javelin.

The boys second place finishes included Jaxson Chartier in the shot put, Taevian
Maupin-Dabney the 400, Bryce Steffan the 300 hurdles and the 4x100 relay consisting
of Holden Lind, Michael Watson, Braxton Basgall and Kamani Jones.

WICHITA, Kan. - The 23rd-ranked Fort Hays State baseball team fell to Newman 15-9 on a blustery Thursday afternoon at McCarthy Field. The teams combined to hit seven home runs on the day, including four from the Jets (10-28, 6-22 MIAA) and three from the Tigers (27-11, 21-6 MIAA).

Ty Riley&nbsp;got the start and struck out seven batters in five-plus innings of work, giving the senior 95 strikeouts on the year. That total ties the FHSU single season school record set 48 years ago by Kevin Jilka (1977).

Fort Hays State opened the scoring early and often, with the first five batters coming across to score. Tony Moore and Trey DeGarmo&nbsp;both worked walks while Isiah Ural singled, loading the bases for Derek Woolwine. The designated hitter made it 2-0 with a single to left before Brady Kreutzer&nbsp;smashed his ninth home run of the season, driving in three RBI and giving the Tigers a quick 5-0 lead.

Newman's starting pitcher Aleks Koppel settled in after that, retiring 14 of the next 15 batters he faced. The Jet bats, meanwhile, slowly chipped away at the lead, pushing across one run in the first, another in the second, two in the third and the game-tying run in the fourth.

The Tigers regained the lead in the top of the seventh when&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/luis-ayala/8413">Luis Ayala</a>&nbsp;stroked a one-out double to left field. Moore followed with a two-run home run, giving FHSU a 7-5 advantage. Jose Cintron&nbsp;added another home run three batters later after a Jet error, doubling the Tiger lead to 9-5.The Jets answered right back with three runs in the bottom of the seventh before taking the lead for the first time all game with seven runs in the home half of the eighth. The Tigers had one runner reach in both the eighth and ninth innings, but were unable to push any more runs across.

Riley allowed five runs on five hits and six walks, with&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/brett-jacobs/8423">Brett Jacobs</a>&nbsp;tossing two innings and allowing four runs on five hits and two strikeouts. Brandon Chavez&nbsp;(6-1) took the loss after surrendering six runs on four hits and one walk in one inning of relief.

Woolwine collected two of FHSU's eight hits and drove in two RBI. Kreutzer led the team with three RBI while Moore and Ural both scored twice.

Due to potential weather in the Wichita area on Saturday, the teams will wrap up the series with a doubleheader on Friday beginning at noon.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Maize South won the team title with a 322, five shots ahead of second-place Bishop Carroll. The Indians fired a 362.

Garden City's&nbsp;Maddix Shook was individual champ with a 2-over par 74.
