ALVA, Okla. – Fort Hays State Women's Soccer ran its win streak to three matches with a 1-0 win at Northwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers posted their second straight shutout and moved to 3-1-2 on the season with the win. NWOSU dropped to 2-3-1 on the season.

Monserrat Diaz of FHSU scored in the 59th&nbsp;minute to put the Tigers into the lead. A free kick into the box created chaos in front of the net and the Tigers cashed in with the game's only score.

Fort Hays State had 12 shots compared to just nine for NWOSU. FHSU placed seven of its 12 shots on goal.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/mackenzie-caldwell/8128">Mackenzie Caldwell</a>&nbsp;made four saves in goal for the Tigers.

The Tigers begin conference play next Friday at Missouri Southern.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Fort Hays State Football is back at home Saturday to face Northeastern State in their second and final non-conference game of the regular season. The Tigers and RiverHawks are set to kickoff at 11 a.m. at Lewis Field in Hays. The game was originally scheduled for the evening, but was moved up because of a threat for thunderstorms in the Hays area. The Tigers are coming off their first loss of the season at Northwest Missouri State last weekend, while the RiverHawks are 0-2 so far this year.

Northeastern State is playing independent in football this year, even though it is a member of the MIAA in most of the sports it offers. The RiverHawks finished last in MIAA play last year going 0-10, but picked up a win over Lincoln in a non-conference game. The RiverHawks are already showing vast improvements from the previous year, averaging over 100 more yards of total offense per game so far this season. Northeastern State has scored at least 21 points in each of its contests this season. Last year's RiverHawk team reached 21 in a game only three times and were shutout five times.

Fort Hays State started its season with a 21-7 win over No. 24 ranked Angelo State and a 30-16 win over Missouri Western before taking a 32-20 loss at Northwest Missouri State last week. The Tigers enjoyed time in the national rankings after the win over Angelo State, gracing the Top 25 of the D2Football.com Poll for two consecutive polls and the Top 25 of the AFCA poll for a week following their win over Missouri Western. The Tigers go into this week's game receiving votes in the AFCA poll and unranked in the D2Football.com poll.

Fort Hays State has won the last nine meetings with Northeastern State, all in MIAA play from 2014 to 2023. The Tigers hold a 9-2 advantage in the all-time series. The Tigers scored over 50 points in five of the last six meetings.

Defensively the Tigers held their first two opponents inside of 400 yards of total offense. They are allowing an average of 332 yards per game. But, the Tigers are still trying to find a breakout game offensively, averaging just 309 yards per game so far this season. FHSU's season high in total offense was 345 yards against Angelo State. The Tigers have thrown for over 200 yards in a game twice and rushed for over 100 yards in a game once.

Individually on offense, Shane Watts&nbsp;leads the Tigers in all-purpose yards with 378 for the season. He has a team-best 260 rushing yards, while adding 101 receiving yards and 17 kick return yards. He also leads the team in touchdowns with five, which is also tied for the MIAA lead. Jabari Lewis&nbsp;ranks second on the team in all-purpose with a team-high 152 receiving yards and 96 kick return yards. Trevor Watts&nbsp;and Cale Cormaney&nbsp;also have over 140 receiving yards for the season. Jack Dawson&nbsp;is averaging 214 passing yards per game this season with three passing touchdowns.

Individually on the defensive side, Makel Williams&nbsp;leads the MIAA in tackles with 31, averaging 10.3 per game. Sam Brandt&nbsp;has two of the team's four interceptions on the season, both recorded last week at Northwest Missouri State. Myles Menges&nbsp;is the team leader in sacks with 2.0 this season. Brandt (24) and Mason Perez&nbsp;(20) join Williams as Tiger defenders with at least 20 tackles this season.

In the kicking game, Parker Janky&nbsp;ranks ninth in NCAA Division II for punting average at 45.3 yards per boot.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/football/roster/carson-arndt/7962">Carson Arndt</a>&nbsp;is averaging 1.67 field goals per game (5-of-6 for the season), which ranks 10th&nbsp;in NCAA Division II.&nbsp;&nbsp;

PHILLIPSBURG –TMP-Marian’s offense produced its best game of
the season and the Monarchs held off a late Panther rally as they handed
Phillipsburg their first loss of the season Friday night in Phillipsburg 30-22.

Phillipsburg (2-1, 2-1 MCL) opened the game with an 80-yard
touchdown drive that took just six plays and a little more than three minutes
off the clock as they built an 8-0 lead.

The Monarchs (2-1, 2-1 MCL) answered right back with a
14-play drive that took more than seven minutes off the clock before Carson
Liles scored his first of two rushing touchdowns on the day from three yards
out. After the two-point conversion it was 8-8.

Phillipsburg wasted little time, scoring on a 40-yard
touchdown run less than two minutes later making it 16-8 Phillipsburg early in
the second quarter.

The Monarchs again had an answered with a nine-play drive
that was capped off on the first career touchdown run for Jackson Gillespie,
from 16-yards out, pulling TMP within two at 18-16 after a failed two-point
conversion. 

On the ensuing Phillipsburg drive, TMP took advantage of a couple
of Phillipsburg miscues and a Ryan Casey sack on third down that forced the
only punt of the game with just under five minutes left in the first half.

TMP put together a perfect four-minute drive to end the
first half driving 69-yards on 10 plays with Liles scoring his second rushing
touchdown with just 36-seconds remaining in the first half with the two-point
conversion giving TMP the 22-16 lead.

After scoring to close out the first half, the Monarchs were
able to complete the coveted “two-for-one,” scoring a touchdown to close out
the first half and one to open the second half.

The touchdown to open the second half was a 32-yard
touchdown pass from Liles to Jacob Seib with the two-point conversion putting
TMP up 30-16 with more than eight and a half minutes left in the third quarter.

Neither team was able find the end through the rest of the
third quarter but Phillipsburg did cut the lead to 30-22 just six seconds into
the fourth quarter.

In a wild fourth quarter TMP threw and interception and
committed two turnovers on downs. Phillipsburg, for their part, also turned it
over on downs and the with less than a minute remaining TMP’s Caden Dinkel intercepted
a half-back pass interception inside the Monarchs 35-yard line securing the Monarchs
30-22 victory.

TMP quarterback Carson Liles completed 21-of-32 passes for
235 yards, all new career-highs, with one touchdown and one interception. Liles
also rushed for 36 yards and two touchdowns.

Jacob Seib finished with a career-high seven receptions for
92 yards.

TMP will begin district play next Friday night at home
against the Stanton County Trojans.

🏈TMP holds off late Phillipsburg rally; moves to 2-1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals' late-season losing streak stretched to five on Friday night with a 2-1 loss to the San Francisco Giants, who got three hits from Heliot Ramos.

Kansas City dropped four games behind Baltimore for the first AL wild card spot and saw its lead cut to one game over Minnesota for the second of the three wild cards.

“You've got to make your own breaks,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “We had every opportunity to hit a ball in the gap or a line drive through the middle. We've got to keep putting ourselves in the opportunities to get guys on base and force the action. Hopefully we break through.”

Mason Black (1-4) pitched shutout ball over a career-high 5 2/3 innings for already eliminated San Francisco, limiting the Royals to four hits.

“He pitched great,” San Francisco manager Bob Melvin said. “He seems like the last few times he's been a little bit more comfortable and confident with what he's doing out there.”

Camilo Doval allowed Garrett Hampson's sacrifice fly before striking out Tommy Pham with runners on second and third to get his 23rd save in 28 chances.

"That was a little stressful, but he got out of it," Melvin said.

Hampson came close to a bases-clearing double down the left-field line that would have won the game with one out in the ninth, but the ball was ruled foul. Quatraro asked to challenge the ruling but was denied.

“I was surprised it was called foul,” Quatraro said. “I didn't have a great angle from where I was sitting, but they called it foul and it's not reviewable.”

Quatraro felt like the ball was behind third-base umpire John Bacon, but he was told that the replay umpire in New York said it wasn't.

“I've argued that one a million times,” Melvin said. “You can't review it unless it's behind him.”

Kansas City went 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position and stranded nine runners, including three runners in scoring position in the first two innings.

“You want to score every time you get those opportunities,” Quatraro said. "It just didn't go our way.”

“We hit the ball hard but didn't have anything to show for it,” Adam Frazier said. “We just need a timely hit or two. The pitchers kept us in the game.”

Michael Wacha (13-8) gave up two runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings, dropping to 9-2 in 15 starts since June 22.

“I feel like they made me work, especially in the first,” Wacha said. “I feel like I was able to settle in there, but the sixth was frustrating."

Mike Yastrzemski led off the first with a bloop single, advanced to second on a walk and to third on a flyout, then scored on Ramos' infield hit.

Ramos hit a two-out double to the wall in right-center in the sixth and scored on Patrick Bailey's single for a 2-0 lead.

Giants right-hander Jordan Hicks was placed on the 15-day injured list retroactive to Tuesday with right-shoulder inflammation and right-hander Austin Warren was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento.

In a game moved up to 4:10 p.m. CDT because of a forecast of bad weather, San Francisco RHP Landen Roupp (0-1, 3.02 ERA) is to start Saturday against Kansas CIty RHP Brady Singer (9-11, 3.53 ERA).

Manhattan scored on big plays through three quarters. They opened the scoring with a 79 yard touchdown pass. Hays responded back with the next 14 points. Holden Lind scored on a run of 30 yards on 4th down carry to tie the game with 4:25 left in the first quarter.

Hays took their first lead in the second quarter when quarterback Carter Graham found Lind for a 28 yard score and a 14-7 advantage. Manhattan answered back six minutes later with a 78 yard pass. Their extra point was wide right, leaving Hays with a 14-13 lead. Before halftime Graham found Jarek Purdy for a 27 yard advantage. The extra point was no good and Hays led 20-13 at halftime.

Hays built double digit lead on a short field score. Carson Moore nailed a 34 yard field for a 23-13 lead with 6:09 left in the third quarter. It was his first career attempt.

BOLIVAR, Mo. - The Fort Hays State volleyball team extended its winning streak to six matches with a pair of wins on day one of the SBU Invitational on Friday. The Tigers rallied to defeat Truman State in five sets before toppling Ouachita Baptist in four frames.

Fort Hays State is now 7-1 on the year, while Truman State dips to 0-10 overall and Ouachita Baptist moves to 6-4.The Tigers will wrap up the weekend Saturday when they take on tournament host Southwest Baptist at 11:45 a.m.

The Bulldogs led for nearly all of the first set, winning 25-20. TOPEKA, Kan. –&nbsp;AdventHealth Sports Park at Bluhawk in Overland Park will host the 6A KSHSAA Boys and Girls State Wrestling Championship, February 28 - March 1, 2025. This marks the first time a KSHSAA State Wrestling Championship has been hosted east of Topeka since 1983 and the first time in the Kansas City Metro since 1978 when the 5A competition took place in Shawnee Mission.

<a target="_blank" href="https://bluhawksports.com/">AdventHealth Sports Park at Bluhawk</a>&nbsp;is designed to host a variety of sports including basketball, volleyball, hockey, ice skating, dance, cheer, pickleball, 5v5 soccer, wrestling, gymnastics, bowling, and so much more.

“With the growth of girl’s wrestling and the increase of classifications, more sites will be used to accommodate crowd size and lodging. The KSHSAA will evaluate this on a yearly basis,” said KSHSAA Assistant Executive Director Mark Lentz.

The&nbsp; Class 3-1A competition will return to Gross Memorial Stadum in Hays. Fort Hays State has hosted 50 KSHSAA State Wrestling Championships, the return comes after a one year hiatus due to scheduling conflicts.

Class 4A will return to Salina and Class 5A will stay in Park City.

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – No. 19 Midwestern State scored two goals in the final seven minutes and beat No. 14 Fort Hays State 3-1 Thursday night, handing the Tigers their first loss of the season. The Tigers are now 3-1 on the season while Midwestern State moved to 2-0-2 overall.

The Tigers took an early lead in the match when&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/tadhg-walsh/7942">Tadhg Walsh</a>&nbsp;chipped a ball from the right side of the field over the Mustang defense and found&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/elias-ovelar-semeniuk/7935">Elias Ovelar Semeniuk</a>&nbsp;at the back post for a header that snuck past the keeper. It was Semeniuk's second goal of the season and Walsh's fifth assist of the year, putting the Tigers up in the 15th&nbsp;minute.

Midwestern State countered when 2023 D2CCA National Player of the Year Mere Escobar was set up for a goal on a nice feed inside the box from Liam Pritchard. The tying goal came in the 37th&nbsp;minute. The goals for both FHSU and MSU were the only shots on goal in the first half in a strong defensive battle.

Fort Hays State ran into trouble in the 70th&nbsp;minute when they had a red card issued and had to play a man down the final 20 minutes of the match. LARNED - The TMP-Marian girls' golf team placed two in the top 10 of Thursday's Larned Invitational at the&nbsp;Larned Country Club.

Brynn Schoepf shot a 92 and tied with Erin Tims of Larned for second but placed third. Both were three back of Larned's Ariana Meyer who was the individual champ.

TMP's Jenna Brull fired a 97 and placed sixth. Emma Wasinger shot a 116 and finished 13th.

NEW ORLEANS - The Fort Hays State women's cross country team is ranked t-30th in the first regular season rankings of the 2024 USTFCCCA NCAA Division II National Coaches' Poll, announced Wednesday (Sept. 18) by the coaches association.

The Tigers are off to a strong start to the season, finishing as the top non-Division I team and fourth overall at the JK Gold Classic before winning the FHSU Tiger Open.

This is the first time the Tiger women have been ranked in the regular season since 2016 when FHSU was slotted 16th in week five. It is the fourth season FHSU has earned a national ranking since joining the NCAA.

Fort Hays State is one of eight schools from the Central Region ranked this week, including three other teams from the MIAA.

The Tigers will return to action next Friday (Sept. 27) when they travel to Columbia, Mo. for the Gans Creek Classic. Action in the women's six-kilometer race is slated to begin at 10:15 a.m.

A proposal initiated by the Kansas Coaches Association and advanced to the Board of Directors agenda by the KSHSAA Executive Board, changes the allowable games a student may participate in from 20 to 23, not counting the postseason. The item was passed with a 36-25 vote.

Other items passed by the KSHSAA Board of Directors:

Rule 22, Outside Competition, Section 1 Article 1&nbsp;- Tennis athletes will now be permitted to participate in one outside competition during the school season. Those events must be approved in advance with a request to the KSHSAA initiated by the member school.&nbsp; Those outside competitions must meet certain criteria with detailed information available on kshsaa.org and in direct communications to member schools participating in tennis. The change is effective upon publication of the Board of Directors meeting minutes.&nbsp;

Rule 32 Baseball and Rule 39 Softball -&nbsp;A student may now participate in 32 total games during the regular season. Each varsity squad may schedule 26 games and sub-varsity may schedule 20 games. The student may participate in no more than 32 games. This is effective for the spring season this school year.

Rule 44, Wrestling (Girls and Boys) -&nbsp;Girls and boys events may now participate in no more than four (4) events, (any combination of double dual, quad (triple dual) and/or one-day tournament) that begin before 3:00 p.m. for each gender. This is effective this school year.

Kansas Shrine Bowl announces $150,000 donation

Kansas Sports Hall of Fame Chairman Jim Dunning, Jr., announced today the appointment of Richard Konzem as executive director of the organization.

Konzem will assume his duties immediately.

Konzem has a long history with the hall of fame, recently serving on the board of directors for the second time. His first stint was 1999-2007, during which time he held the office of vice-president from 2003-05.

“Richard is eminently qualified to lead the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame,” Dunning said. “His knowledge of the organization, experience in sports, relationships with key constituents and track record of success made his selection an easy one. Speaking on behalf of the board, we are excited to have him as the executive director and look forward to working with him.”

A native of Salina, Konzem has extensive experience professionally and as a volunteer in the sports industry. He began his career serving in various capacities in the University of Kansas athletics department, his last title as senior associate athletic director (1981-2003). He was the athletic director at Benedictine (Kan.) College in 2006-07 and followed in the same capacity at Rockhurst (Mo.) University, 2007-11.&nbsp;

“I’m honored and humbled to be selected to serve the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame,” Konzem said. “I have always admired the organization and have a deep appreciation for the men and women who have achieved excellence in representing the state of Kansas. I look forward to working with the board to advance the organization.”

He concluded his career in college athletics as the Rockhurst men’s and women’s golf coach and served as an adjunct professor in sports management. He retired from those duties in 2022. Konzem also manages his own consulting business, where he has assisted collegiate athletics departments in strategic planning. He has worked in golf event management supporting the PGA Tour and staffed numerous NCAA championship events.&nbsp;

Additionally, Konzem has organizational leadership experience as the chief operating officer for the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America and as the deputy director of the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics. His local and state volunteer activities include the Sunflower State Games board of directors, Leadership Kansas, Junior Achievement, Lawrence Parks and Recreation, Douglas County United Way, and Lawrence Chamber of Commerce.&nbsp;

He remains active as a volunteer golf rules official in the state and Midwest region, working events for Central Links/Kansas Golf Association, the Big 12 Conference and the United States Golf Association.&nbsp;

Konzem earned a Bachelor of Science in business administration from the University of Kansas in 1980 and a Master of Arts in athletic administration and physical education from the University of Southern California in 1984. He and his wife, Debbie Vignatelli, reside in Lawrence.

The 2024 Kansas Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be October 13 in Topeka at the Hotel Topeka. The reception begins at 5 p.m. with the program to follow.
